do i ship wincest. yeah they're an inseparable pair on a narrative and thematic level, can you truly understand one without understanding the other? they're two halves of a dialectic on heroism and sacrifice. they're two points on the family trauma survivor spectrum, sometimes opposing, sometimes intersecting. they're like watching your parents who should've gotten a divorce years ago somehow stay together, against all reason. they're two inheritors of a rugged American masculinity and isolated individualism, internal and external violence springing forth. regressing to the nostalgia of frontier brotherhood as substitute for the nuclear family. they're a set of quintessential outlaw lovers. maybe true love only exists in the kind of freedom you keep when you're always moving, on the road, in your childlike bubble excluded from society, left with nowhere to burrow your roots except into each other's very being. they're the world's loneliest childhood shared between two feral dogs, one biting down on the other, unable to let go. they're the fantasy of an unconditional love so powerful it can survive the apocalyptic enormity of your own self-loathing. they're a set of matryoshka dolls, one consuming the other. journeys end in lovers meeting, but what kind of journey is it really when you've never left home: it's been sitting in the seat next to you this entire time. your haunted house is not a home but a person who'll never let go. they're an erotic fantasy of domestic horror as a sweet, sickening embrace as opposed to an all-consuming fire, a car driving off into heaven's sunset as opposed to one crashing into a tree. (wrong: they're both). so horribly enmeshed and trapped in a magnified love so destructive to the world around them they leave catherine and heathcliff wuthering heights in the dust. they're two brothers trapped in a 15 year long spiral of an abusive codependent pseudo-marriage, in part due to a network unable to let go of a successful show format, thus unable to afford them any growth that might disturb the status quo. but the implications of it all.

it’s been said a million times but truly one of the things i LOVE about the whole ‘full house of wincest’ deal is spn opens with john perpetuating it — whether you believe it’s sexual or not we see from the jump the emotional incest happening between dean, john, & sam. especially j/d and s/d. and you think it’s this self-contained unit that developed from mary dying in the fire. and of course we see the ‘it’s you’ full scene in ahbl but we don’t have the context. okay, mary had prior dealings with azazel, sure, but we still see the incest within the contained unit of three

and then to watch in the beginning and see that it stemmed from samuel/mary all along was soooo good. plus if you were already viewing sam/azazel as pseudo-cest, well: azazel possessing the body of his grandfather sexually assault his mother really nailed that home huh. AUGH. i miss gothic horror spn

You don’t have to post this if you don’t want. I just wanted to say I was one of those curious, openminded fans willing to entertain the idea of samjohn (mostly bc deanjohn feels so congruent with canon + there’s so much interesting meta on it that managed to convert me + incestuous households usually affect all of it’s members) but just like you said I was immediately put off by the blatant character assassination that pervades everything from fics to edits to the propaganda in that incest poll lmao.

I guess that’s the major difference - deanjohn requires little to no stretching of imagination bc it already fits seamlessly into canon, whereas samjohn almost demands ooc shenanigans to work.

I also just found the way fans talk about it nauseating for some reason, though that’s likely more of a reflection of my own personal triggers. I love digesting incest narratives, but the fetishistic angle of that blog really makes my stomach turn. That’s not a moral judgement on anyone else’s enjoyment btw! Just another reason why this ship didn’t resonate with me.

when i first joined fandom, the few j/s fics were straightforward evil!john non-con. not my thing, but i understood why it was written that way. then came the inexplicably popular fandom creation of "sexkitten sam" which continues to pollute the entire sam/dean fandom and of course extends to other ships too. i'm not even gonna get started on why that's "problematic" because that's not the point, it's not remotely in character. even as an exaggeration sam is not the kind of person to attempt to find agency in outward submission or objectification. he's very vocally not compromising his identity to please his family and especially john. dean is more like that so when you have sam acting like a fetishized pinterest aesthetic moodboard version of dean and dean acting like an old man from wattpad i'm understandably left squinting at the screen. then it's genderswapping sam and using that as a personality eraser because women are automatically submissive and naive and trad?

who is being converted by all this when it has nothing to do with sam, john or even dean? where is dean in all this actually? a core aspect of their family is that dean is closest to both sam and john who rarely had much opportunity to bond without him. there was a distance between sam and john throughout sam's childhood and adolescence. most of his parental needs were being fulfilled by dean even if that was never enough. their situation with their father wasn't the average one where they were simply 2 kids fighting for his attention.

for the most part j/s appears to be about "envying" dean's position in the family. it's about diminishing or straight up erasing dean and more notably about feminizing sam. either directly or otherwise. people generally seem to have big issues with the fact that sam is a man and confidently so. most of the annoying tropes in wincest fandom have this at their core. and of course in order for sam to be "the woman" dean needs to genuinely and authentically be the most stereotypical of cishet men. it's very transparent because right from the start the show poked holes at dean's performance of masculinity. it was very much the point. dean's gender issues could fill a book yet any alternative interpretation of sam and gender seeks to cast dean as the oppressive bigot who would never get it? stopping here before i get off topic but to make myself clear: in theory i respect headcanons i don't understand, but not when they spitefully exist to deny dean's depth in every possible way.

to return to my point about dean's pseudo spouse and mother position being enviable, it misses the point of how harmful john's parenting was to both of them. it's no coincidence that they both view themselves as the unfavorite. dean believes he's taken for granted, only valued for what he can give, how well he can perform his roles, how successfully he could play at being an adult even before he hit double digits. dean can't just exist and be himself while sam is uncompromisingly himself. because of that he believes john doesn't like him, never liked him, rejected him, didn't have time for him, didn't trust him enough with the family secrets, even when those secrets directly concerned him. as of season 1 he still has contempt for dean for what he views as unquestioning obedience to john and letting himself be molded by john. dean had to fight for every scrap of approval and affection and sam refused to do the same if it meant sacrificing his own needs and identity. not everyone reacts to abuse the same way and both characters are very much shaped by their different reactions to their environment. and any j/s shipper argument that is built on the idea that sam was the one john loved more is not only gleefully mocking dean's parentification but ignoring that sam being comparatively sheltered and treated like a son is yet another reason why john would not cross such a line with him. dean "gets it", dean lost mary too, dean is his partner and his confidant, dean can handle adult responsibilities, dean is loving and supportive, dean isn't making him confront his parenting failures, dean can't say no to him. like you said, it doesn't at all stretch the imagination to make j/d fit into dean's backstory. "you are not a child" - "i never was".

as i have been saying, any remotely ic exploration of j/s would have to follow both j/d and s/d. i can't believe in a universe where j/s is the only incest that happens in the family. i think a theoretical plausible j/s fic would have to not only accept but embrace its adjacency to the 2 ships that are compliant with the canon. but whether sam knows for a fact about j/d or not, there's no way he isn't severely impacted by the proximity to that relationship in a number of ways and that's a very compelling dynamic in its own right.

tldr i agree with you anon. people can read and write whatever they want but there's a big difference between incest subtext that is believable and just saying things in a way that's meant to provoke.

it's fascinating to stumble into discourse from other sides of the spn fandom outside wincest

the jack girlies are seemingly in the trenches all the time because no one understands jack and people in the fandom babify him too much instead of seeing him as an adult character. but simultaneously many think that shipping him with others is not okay because he's only been alive for a couple of years so he's like a minor in some ways? they're divided on this matter I think. regardless of the answer they're strongly against people shipping him with sam or dean or cas, I guess for pseudo-incestuous reasons. and then there's also the huge discourse surrounding him being autistic-coded which makes the babification of his character by the fandom something ableist. point is, from what I've gathered they hate baby!jack fanart and fics with passion

anyways I wonder what other fandom drama I'm missing. what are the midam girls doing. the crowley enthusiasts. the claire enjoyers. the samwena and the samleen shippers ?? what's up with them. what insane discourses and controversial takes are happening in those foreign lands....

"Your honor, these characters are victims of fanon-as-canon widespreading! There are antis out there who will raise hell if you say Dirk is anything other than gay when it's literally canon that Dirk Strider states he doesn't like the label gay. Meanwhile, Rose Lalonde also dates both men and women in canon and has never outright stated what her sexuality is, yet antis will also raise hell if you say she is anything but a lesbian.

Their dynamics are complex and nuanced throughout the webcomic. They are both clever and self important, and their banter is delicious. They both share the vice of wanting to control the narrative of the lives they are stuck in, and this ties them together far tighter than any blood ties.

Also, in Homestuck 2 (which is dubiously canon), Rose Lalonde quite literally leaves her wife to join Dirk in creating a new universe with him. This then blossoms into a passionate rivalry where they both see who could create the ideal universe. They're always pushing each other to greater heights.

Also, the fact that Dirk wanted Rose to come with him-- even choosing her over his own pseudo-brother who he looked up to to an extreme degree-- goes to show that he values her mind above all others.

Dirk is a hard person to impress or to crack the impersonal shell of, but I strongly feel that Rose Lalonde (especially with her penchant for psychology which ties well with his interests in philosophy) is exactly the right person to crack his shell."

13. Worst blorbofication

See, the one I run into that bothers me the most is Dean. God forbid we treat him with an ounce of nuance and allow him to be a little shitty sometimes. But for the worst worst? Gabriel. Gabriel got hit so hard with the fandomification ray and he’s never recovered. I’d wager a bit of it is how a not inconsiderable amount of people did not watch s1-3 and so are. Less aware of the whole ‘killing Dean hundreds of times in a row for Sam’s personal torture in a misguided attempt to make Dean’s eventual real death hit less hard and uhm. Actually making it much much worse lmao.’ I feel like maybe if you didn’t sit there and watch Gabriel laugh off Sam’s distress at first and then force him to go six months without Dean + think he killed his pseudo-father figure for a minute, you perhaps are just going to believe he’s a funny goofy guy who stuck them in tv land for a bit. And this obviously makes it very easy to pair the spares with him & Sam in the background of destiel. Because this entire fandom is the worlds most boring game of politics influenced by dean and cas sucking each others dicks. All things can and shall be traced back to destiel. Or wincest. Sometimes. But mostly destiel.

24. topic that brings up the most rancid discourse

So many to choose from. I’m gonna pick the one that’s started to annoy me as I get deeper into the later seasons, and that’s Sam and Dean and the entire topic of the abuse literally happening on the screen in front of our eyes. Because, I think I’ve said this before, I don’t care if someone doesn’t want to engage with that topic, hell knows the show doesn’t care to examine what’s going on there beyond a surface level that always loops back around to ‘but dean was right to be paranoid and controlling because bad things happen otherwise’, but what is. So gross. Is the takes I have now been forced to see ranging from ‘well ACTUALLY none of the things Dean does are abusive and are normal’ which is Worrying to ‘Sam deserves it because if it was that bad, he would just leave Dean and he doesn’t, so he must like the way he’s being treated’ which is Rancid! Well aware of this fandom’s inability to do nuance ever or recognize that emotional abuse is as destructive as physical abuse (see: every fic that insists John hit his kids when show canon has a literal actual episode emphasizing to us that John did not in fact hit his kids, but the damage he did through neglect and emotional abuse is just as harmful.)

Oh, actually, you know what. Changing my answer. John Winchester. That’s my answer. Rancid takes all around. Holding my nose wading through metas about him looking for the rare gold that actually understands his character.

the muscle car, the iconic leather jackets from their fathers, guilt complexes, toxic male family relationship while being more like their mothers, their sacrificial natures, their shitty pointless deaths that pissed off fandom and also being misunderstood by large swaths of their fandoms.

funnily i never really got into wincest. i am not bothered by it like some people though. i have seen the overlap throughout sterek fandom so lol.

though misha collins and tyler hoechlin both deserve compensation for their characters being sent to superhell by robert singer and jeff davis respectively.

So why incest-adjacent (thinks of someone not related to them as a sibling figure but still ends up in a romantic relationship with them) ships have become more popular in recent years? It’s such a weird trend to me.

I don't know that it has?

Outside of fandom, there have been various versions of "we grew up like pseudo-siblings but oh no now you're hot" for probably as long as there have been romance novels. The earliest Thorki fanfic on AO3 is from 2010. Obviously they're actually related, but the earliest Wincest fanfic on AO3 is from 2007, and I'm 100% sure there are ones not on AO3 dating back to 2005 when the show started.

So unless you're counting the mid-2000s as "recent years" I'm not really sure if there's something in particular I can point to.

While is not something that i actively seek for, it's not something that puts me off either... tis an extra level of spice that i dont mind~

If any of my otps where to be comfirmed to be related id be like "? Ok i dont mind :3". If some media im consuming wants to make some incest id be like "oh that's pretty cool, go on! ^^". Gay ships are pretty boring and uninteresting in my opinion but when you add the incest spice i'd be like "!! Ah, now you got my attention"

I particularly like cousincest, i do go outta my way to ship Neji/Hinata from Naruto... i havent watched it in a long time but i kinda remembered being a bit teased in filler episodes and in that Rock Lee spin off lol

this is pretty random, but as someone who has incest and pseudo-incest ships in other fandoms (of the non-SPN variety), I think you're really cool for not demonizing/attacking ppl like me. i know that was the norm (ship and let ship) up until a few years back, but i'm still grateful whenever i come across those like you. so yeah, random, but aside from being an incredible writer, thank you for being a (more-than-) decent person too

First off, hearts to you anon! <3 It WAS the norm to ship and let ship, and it still should be! I DO have friends who have wildly different ships than I do. Variety, spice of life, etc etc.

I DO have opinions on the way that some people treat incest ships (The idea that an incest ship could be portrayed as sunshine and puppies confuses the ever-loving fuck out of me, because they're typically rooted in abuse), but those are my own opinions. Not everyone shares them. Sometimes I think they should because I'm right a lot of the time, but I understand that's an unreasonable ask so I leave it be.

I think what most people forget about shipping is four-fold:

You can - AND SHOULD - tailor your internet experience to your own specifications. I have ships that I don't enjoy blocked so I don't have to deal with it. Wincest. Obikin. Reylo. All blocked because I don't ship them. And then I...don't deal with it. Because otherwise I'm wasting my time on something I dislike and that's - well - a waste of time.

2. Someone else's ships - and specifically ships of complete and total strangers - DON'T AFFECT MY LIFE! lol. Friend, I am going to be 38 in like...two months. The list of things that don't bother me is long, and someone else's shipping habits lands squarely near the top. I don' care. None of us should care.

3. Dark ships can be therapeutic. There are people out there who have been the victim of incest in real life. In the real world, and some of those people find those ships to be helpful for coping with what's happened to them. There's value there, and I think people forget that.

4. It's...it's fiction. It's all fiction. None of it is real. Shaming people or being angry at people for a fictional thing they enjoy is a wild, wild choice. And again, a waste of time.

It started out as one of Jensen’s quite harmless seeming games when he sent Jared a text back in 2005.

“How you doin’, Sammy?”

Back then Jared hadn’t even thought about answering the text like he did.

“Quite lonely bro xx”

What they’ve gotten out of it was a romance that would last from the start of Supernatural in 2005 until now. Supernatural’s end in the middle of a pandemic. Before they went home for a short period and Jared had to start new filmings for “Walker”, him and Jensen decided to roadtrip back home. And it was rough on both of them. They were done being Sam and Dean Winchester, the series was over.

And there was no room left for a new season with them starring as the brothers. Jensen decided in which hotel they should stay tonight. Both of them had their fair share of tears already. Sitting in the Impala was a big thing. It felt like they weren’t quite detached from their roles. And when Jensen told Jared to stay in the car, while he took care of the reservation and “decorating the room”, Jared wasn’t prepared for the text that just arrived on his phone.

“Room 28. Waiting for you, Sammy.”

It was a sudden chill down Jared’s spine, reading these few words.

Jensen’s game he liked to play. And which Jared enjoyed the same. He squirmed, texting back. “On my way, Dean.”

And Jared got out of the car, locked it and strolled to the hotel entrance, passing the reception, taking the elevator. He felt on edge, excited but a little nervous. Life has been unfair to them lately and their romance seemed to lose their base with the show ending. Something was off between them for a while already but Jared couldn’t put a finger on the problem. He took Jensen’s invitation anyway, his heart pounding against his rib cage and his eyes glowing. He knocked at Room 28.

And waited.

It took a minute for Jensen to open. His stubble was already visible, scratchy and his hair wasn’t groomed like on set. But who stood in front of Jared wasn’t ‘Jensen’ anymore. It was Dean Winchester, fully dressed. Which made him sigh inside. Why was he still dressed?

And when Jared crossed the treshold, he dove in his headspace already. Where Sam would live on forever.

There was a lot of kissing first, Jensen’s body was hot and felt like made of steel, hard and pushing agains Jared. He was maybe smaller but he definitely was the stronger one here. Jared let him.

“God, I’ve missed you”, Jensen said between two kisses. “I missed you, Sammy.”

And Sammy reacted, moaning in Dean’s mouth. “I’ve missed you too, big brother. So, so much.”

There was no questioning, the rules were clear. And Sam would do whatever it took to make Dean happy. He always would. They always would.

Sam is pushed onto the bed, across the whole king size and he stretches out, placing his hands over his head for Dean to pin them down, make him lie still for him. No touching allowed. “Good boy, you haven’t forgotten, even though it’s been a while I fucked you, right?”

Sam nodded. In adoration and surrender.

“Tell me what you want me to do?”, Dean asked, voice rough and low, almost a growl. It’s digging deep in Sam’s stomach, making him ache in desire.
