Peter Eötvös
Hungarian conductor of modernist music who went on to compose operas with texts ranging from Three Sisters to Angels in America
The Hungarian composer and conductor Peter Eötvös, who has died aged 80, is now best known for the 12 operas that he wrote during the last 25 years of his life. Before that, he played a leading role as a conductor specialising in the promotion of European musical modernism.
Premiered in Lyon in 1998, the work that launched Eötvös’s career as a successful opera composer was Three Sisters. The libretto, written with Claus H Henneberg, reworks Anton Chekhov’s play into a series of three “sequences”, each offering a version of events from the point of view of a single character; no fewer than four roles are taken by countertenors.
From then onwards, he frequently added new stage works to an already growing number of concert works in an extensive output notable for its radiant lyricism and brilliant orchestration. By extending the modernist origins of an approach rooted in the music and ideas of Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen with the aid of deeply considered investigations of other music of cultures beyond Europe, Eötvös gradually found his own voice.
Stockhausen had already drawn on Japanese musical and theatrical traditions, and Eötvös’s earliest opera, Harakiri – based on the ritual suicide of Yukio Mishima – was composed as far back as 1973, while both composers were working together in Osaka. Subsequently, however, Eötvös’s style – variously influenced by Chinese as well as Japanese traditions, by Indian, African and Basque musics, by jazz and, not least, by Béla Bartók and the folk repertoires of his native Transylvania – developed much of its individuality from interrogations of those cultures that went far beyond any mere cultural tourism.
His instrumental compositions, as well as his operas, often spring from such sources: the large-scale orchestral work Atlantis (1995), for example, draws on Transylvanian dances that act as a symbol of a lost culture associated, for the composer, with renewed hope. In later years he received many commissions from the world’s leading orchestras: in 2016, for instance, for Oratorium Balbulum, to a text by Péter Esterházy, for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, premiered at the Salzburg festival. Ruminating on a variety of topical political issues, from the 9/11 terrorist attacks to relationships between countries, this work is typical of Eötvös’s social and political concerns.
But his operas already seem likely to represent the most enduring and surprisingly varied dimension of his output. Adapting novels and plays by writers both classic and modern – including Jon Fosse, Jean Genet, Tony Kushner and Gabriel García Márquez – these works demonstrate both Eötvös’s wide literary ambitions and his willingness to explore a variety of different dramatic approaches, comic as well as tragic. He was assisted in devising some of these opera libretti by Maria Eötvösne Mezei, his third wife.
Le Balcon – its libretto, by Françoise Morvan, André Markovitz and the composer, derived from Genet’s now classic tale of power struggles within a revolutionary setting – was first seen at Aix-en-Provence in 2002. Mezei’s libretto for Angels in America (2004) boils down to less than three hours the original seven hours of Kushner’s play about HIV/Aids.
Several of his operas have been seen in the UK. When his Márquez-based Love and Other Demons was produced at Glyndebourne in 2008, Eötvös became the first non-British composer to have a stage work premiered there. Described by the composer as “a bel canto opera”, it explored illicit love, superstition, race and demonic power, with a libretto by Kornél Hamvai. The music underpins the drama with an innate understanding of how orchestral forces can enhance the overall effect; though indulging in some gorgeous sounds, the composer displays the rare knack of knowing when less can sometimes be more powerful than more.
Eötvös’s final opera, Valuska – also his first with a libretto in Hungarian, by Mezei and Kinga Keszthelyi – was drawn from the novel The Melancholy of Resistance, by László Krasznahorkai: a tragi-comic, surreal story centring on a newspaper delivery man and the arrival in his small town of a circus with, as its star attraction, the world’s largest taxidermied whale. Valuska was premiered in Budapest last December.
Eötvös was, like his older compatriots György Ligeti and György Kurtág, a native of multi-ethnic Transylvania – then in Hungary but subsequently transferred to Romania; his birthplace was Székelyudvarhely. The turbulent final months of the second world war caused his family, including his mother, Ilona Szucs, to flee westwards. She was a pianist, and his father, Laszlo Eötvös, was a lawyer. Peter’s early childhood was spent in Miskolc, a northern Hungarian town where he first met Ligeti. The latter was already becoming established as a composer and teacher by the late 1940s, and the two remained in contact.
Eötvös studied piano and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest from 1958 onwards; after advice from Zoltán Kodály, János Viski became his composition teacher. He soon gaining a reputation for improvising to accompany silent films and composing scores for both cinema and theatre.
In 1966, at the age of 22, he moved to Cologne on a scholarship to work with Stockhausen. He also studied composition with Bernd Alois Zimmermann and began to conduct. When I first went to the Darmstadt Summer School, in 1974, I recall Eötvös not only as one of Stockhausen’s closest acolytes but also as a member of a recently formed group of young Cologne-based musicians calling themselves the Oeldorf Group and specialising in live performance involving electronics.
From 1978, after Boulez asked him to conduct the opening concert of IRCAM, his Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique, in Paris, Eötvös found fame as a conductor specialising in all the latest compositional trends that helped to drive the global modernist agenda of the time. He quickly assumed the position of musical director of Ensemble Intercontemporain, IRCAM’s flagship chamber orchestra.
He conducted the world premieres of Stockhausen’s operas Donnerstag aus Licht (1981) and Montag aus Licht (1988). In the UK, he conducted the Covent Garden performances of Donnerstag in 1985 and was principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from that year until 1988. He worked with the London Sinfonietta and also conducted Leos Janáček’s The Makropulos Case at Glyndebourne in 2001.
It was only after relinquishing his duties with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, in 1991, that Eötvös really came to the fore as a composer. With his new status on the European scene, and the political events of 1989 onwards, came new responsibilities.
He taught conducting and contemporary chamber music in both Karlsruhe and Cologne in Germany. Having already founded the International Eötvös Institute for young conductors and composers in Budapest in 1991, he went on to establish the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation in 2004. It was at this moment, when Hungary joined the European Union, that Eötvös and his wife Maria – who had both previously lived in Cologne, Paris and then Hilversum in the Netherlands – finally moved back to Budapest.
A son from Eötvös’s first marriage, to the actor Piroska Molnár in 1968, predeceased him. In 1976 he married the Taiwanese-German pianist Pi-hsien Chen, with whom he had a daughter, Ann-yi. They divorced and he subsequently married Maria Mezei in 1995. He is survived by her, Ann-yi and by two stepsons from that marriage, Peter and Daniel.

Maldives president courts investors in China as Indian ties sag - Reuters
At an "Invest Maldives" forum in a southern Chinese port city, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu shook hands and exchanged words with smiling local officials on a China visit set to deepen bilateral ties as the archipelagic nation pirouettes [sic?] away from India.[...]
Muizzu became president of the Indian Ocean nation in November after winning on his "India Out" campaign platform under which he called New Delhi's huge influence a threat to sovereignty. His government has since asked dozens of locally based Indian military personnel to leave. And in an apparent snub to India, Muizzu is in China this week, before any visit to his country's giant neighbour. In Fuzhou, the Chinese city designated as the start of China's maritime "Silk Road", Muizzu said China remained one of his country's "closest allies and developmental partners", according to a statement released by his office. Advertisement · Scroll to continue Increasing export of fish products to China under the two countries' free trade agreement will be a key priority, Muizzu added. Fishing is the largest source of employment in the Maldives, where 99% of its territory comprises the sea. Aquatic products account for over 98% of exports by volume and value. Muizzu also said his government was keen to explore partnerships under Xi's Belt and Road Initiative, including the expansion of the country's central airport and commercial port.
Under the Belt and Road Initiative aimed at building a global trade and infrastructure network, China has already helped expand the Velana International Airport in Male and built the cross-sea China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.[...]
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was snorkelling last week in Lakshadweep, an archipelago of atolls and reefs off the coast of Kerala, a visit that some viewed as an attempt to draw tourists away from the nearby Maldivian islands.[...]
Modi's Lakshadweep visit prompted three Maldivian government officials to call him names including "a clown", leading some Indian tourists to share screenshots of cancelled bookings of Maldivian holidays. #ExploreIndianIslands became a trending hashtag in India on X. One of India's largest travel platforms suspended flight bookings to the tourism-dependent Maldives on Monday . "India's strained relations with certain countries in South Asia can be attributed to its perception of being the regional boss," China's Global Times reported on Monday, citing analysts. And, the newspaper added, quoting a Chinese academic, India's current "nervousness" about Muizzu's visit to China showed its "lack of confidence".
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promotion of tourism on an Indian island chain has sparked a row with the Maldives after senior officials from that country accused Modi of being a “puppet of Israel”.[...]
Maryam Shiuna, a deputy minister in the Maldives’ government, labelled Modi “a clown” and “puppet of Israel” on X. Another official slammed Modi as a “terrorist”.[...]
After the uproar, the Maldivian government said it had suspended three deputy ministers who made the critical remarks. Their social media posts were deleted and disavowed by the government. But Modi is close to Israel, and on Monday an account on X linked to the Israeli embassy in India appeared to turn the criticism against Modi into a sign of endorsement. “We were in #Lakshadweep last year upon the federal government's request to initiate the desalination program,” the social media post said. “Israel is ready to commence working on this project tomorrow.” Other social media users critical of Modi reacted to the news, seemingly praising the Maldivian officials.

An Outpost for Evolution at Aldabra Atoll
Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean is one of the largest raised coral reefs in the world. This atoll, consisting of coral islands ringing a shallow lagoon, is known for the hundreds of endemic species—including the Aldabra giant tortoise—that live there. According to UNESCO, Aldabra contains “one of the most important natural habitats for studying evolutionary and ecological processes.”
Located more than 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of Madagascar and more than 600 kilometers (375 miles) east of mainland Africa, Aldabra is one of the coralline outer islands of the Seychelles. The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image of the remote atoll on June 24, 2022. Tides flow in and out of the lagoon through channels between the large perimeter islands. The land tops out at a mere 8 meters (26 feet) above sea level.
Due to the islands’ isolated location, rough terrain, and scarcity of fresh water, the human footprint on the atoll is relatively small. A research station on West Island (also called Picard Island) has operated since 1971, but tourism is limited and carefully controlled. Aldabra Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982 and a Ramsar site in 2009.
Though the atoll may be remote and rugged, it is not desolate. It contains a variety of habitats that have spurred the evolution of specially suited flora and fauna. The atoll’s varied habitats support many species, including the largest breeding population of frigatebirds in the Indian Ocean and one of only two oceanic flamingo populations in the world.
In one remarkable case, a bird species on Aldabra evolved to be flightless—twice. The islands have been completely underwater at least once in their history when global mean sea level was higher, wiping out all life on the atoll. The fossil record contains evidence of a flightless rail (a bird in the same family as coots and crakes) before the last submergence, and of a flying white-throated rail that evolved to live on the ground after the islands reemerged. With the lack of terrestrial predators and an abundance of food, the bird thrived without the ability to fly.
Seven different types of wetlands, including shallow marine waters and seagrass beds, exist at Aldabra. Mangrove forests line much of the lagoon-facing sides of the large islands. They provide nesting sites for wading birds, as well as feeding grounds for turtles, sharks, and other marine species.
Tumblr media
On land, the mostly herbivorous Aldabra giant tortoise (above) sits atop the terrestrial food chain. The population of this social tortoise species is estimated to exceed 100,000. Males can weigh up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds) and measure 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length.
In 2018, a small group of Aldabra giant tortoises was reintroduced to neighboring Madagascar, where no giant tortoises had lived for 600 years due to overhunting. Ecologists believe the lumbering creatures could promote forest regeneration on cattle-grazed land by distributing seeds through their dung. They may also suppress fire risk by feeding on grasses and dry leaves.

Space Tech: Private Ventures and Mars Exploration
Tumblr media
Space Tech
Beyond intrepid exploration, space technology has advanced to address pressing issues on Earth. It is becoming more and more essential to the effective operation of contemporary societies and their economic growth. Space has the potential to directly affect billions of people’s lives and open up large-scale, highly impactful solutions.
A broad term for satellites, space stations, ground stations, tracking and monitoring centers, downstream analytics and artificial intelligence, software, and other technologies, SpaceTech offers innovative ways to solve global concerns. Satellites increase communication, navigation, and earth observation capacity at low cost even in remote locations. Satellite-based earth observation data is vital, accurate, and reliable for data-driven decision-making by businesses and governments.
The underserved and otherwise unprofitable regions can benefit from high-speed connectivity thanks to the satellites. The application of action plans for intelligent agriculture, resource management (land and water), infrastructure development (urban and rural), climate and weather monitoring, environmental protection (including reducing the risk of disaster), and other purposes can all benefit from the use of satellite data.
Aerospace Innovation
The space industry is predicted to increase in value from USD 360 billion in 2018 to USD 558 billion by 2026 and roughly USD 1 trillion by 2040. Even though the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is one of the world’s top space agencies and is working on projects like the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (NavIC) and the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India currently only makes up 2%, or USD 7 Bn, of this market value.
One reason could be that the private sector’s contribution to the Indian space industry has primarily consisted of ISRO subcontracting, with ISRO historically handling the crucial value addition activities internally. Because of this, Indian private companies have lagged behind other world leaders in SpaceTech in terms of end-to-end capabilities.
The publication of SpaceCom Policy 2020, Space RS Policy 2020, Geospatial Policy 2021, and other policies, along with the creation of organizations like NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN–SPACe), have created a national push to expedite the private sector’s involvement in the Indian space area. The Department of Space is also working on a comprehensive Space Act and other policies, including launch vehicle and space exploration policies.
Because of our natural curiosity and desire to understand the universe, space travel has long fascinated people.
Recently, private enterprise and international cooperation have transformed space exploration.
This article will explore the changing face of space exploration and emphasize the importance of international collaboration and private industry.
New Space Technologies
Pioneers of Personal Space Travel
NASA, Roscosmos, and ESA were the only government space agencies allowed to explore space. However, private companies leading space innovation changed everything:
SpaceX since 2002 has resupplied the ISS, developed reusable rocket technology, and prepared to colonize Mars.
Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin offers professional and recreational suborbital and orbital spaceflight.
Rick Branson’s suborbital space tourism company, Virgin Galactic.
Innovating, competing, and seeking commercial opportunities beyond Earth are redefining space exploration in private space ventures.
Space Exploration Companies
International Space Cooperation
Space exploration requires international cooperation even as private businesses grow:
The Earth-orbiting International Space Station (ISS) is a global collaboration marvel. European, Japanese, Canadian, Russian, and US space agencies participate.
Mars exploration: NASA, ESA, and others work on Curiosity and Mars Sample Return.
The Artemis Accords outlines global cooperation on the Moon and beyond, inviting international partners to lunar exploration.
Global Collaboration and Private Enterprises Benefits
Space exploration benefits from private sector involvement and international cooperation in a number of ways.
Innovation: By bringing in competition and innovation, private endeavors lower costs and advance technology.
Commercialization: Businesses worldwide can take advantage of commercial endeavors to expand their satellite deployment, space tourism, and resource exploitation capabilities.
Shared Resources: Working together, nations can pool resources, exchange knowledge, and take on challenging projects.
Scientific Discovery: Across national boundaries, international cooperation increases the possibility of scientific discovery and exploration.
Difficulties and Things to Think About
Although private and international partnerships present notable benefits, they also present certain challenges.
Regulation: To address new challenges, the framework governing international cooperation and private space endeavors needs to change.
Resource Management: A complex ethical and legal challenge is the responsible use of space resources, such as lunar mining.
Space Debris: Coordinated actions ought to tackle the expanding problem of space debris and environmentally friendly space operations.
Space Travel Prospects
Future space exploration could lead to asteroid mining, planet colonization, and scientific breakthroughs.
Space exploration is entering a new era as private companies and multinational partnerships change the space environment.
Space exploration is more accessible, sustainable, and transformative than ever thanks to private innovation and international collaboration. It shows our willingness to push the limits and our enduring spirit of exploration.
Mars Rover
What is Mars Rover?
A robotic vehicle that investigates the surface of Mars is called a rover. Rovers are long-range, remotely controlled vehicles that gather data and take images while traveling great distances. They have found evidence of water, ancient life, and possible resources on Mars, among many other significant discoveries.
Six Mars rovers have been successful so far:
In 1997, Sojourner became the first rover to set foot on Mars. During 83 days, it investigated the Ares Vallis region. The twin rovers Spirit (2004) and Opportunity (2004) touched down on Mars in 2004. For many years, they investigated the Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum, respectively. Opportunity stopped operating in 2018 and Spirit became stuck in 2010.
Gale Crater is presently being explored by Curiosity (2012). It has found evidence of ancient lakes and rivers, among many other significant discoveries.
The Jezero Crater region is being explored in Perseverance (2021). In addition to gathering samples of rock and regolith broken rock and soil for potential return to Earth, it is searching for indications of prehistoric life.
The first Chinese rover to set foot on Mars is Zhurong (2021). It is investigating the area of Utopia Planitia.
An essential component of our Mars exploration are the Mars rovers. They have made significant contributions to our understanding of the Red Planet’s potential for habitability.

I think there's a false stereotype unfortunately for countries like ours that are in South Europe. Many will ask where are they from and when they answer Spain Italy or Greece they immediately assume it's a *exotic* country.
Like no??? It's not exotic because the weather is just warmer and people have a more tanned and olive skin. We are not tropical islands like Hawaii.
In general i think south Europe is being looked down a lot especially when countries like Greece invest more in tourism
Exotic at its own is not necessarily negative. It just means different, outer (it's a greek word btw). Even though northerners and westerners keep using this word over and over for the places they consider often mistakenly exotic, technically Sweden is exotic to a Vietnamese too. As a result, it depends based on what criteria would one consider Greece and the Mediterranean in general exotic. Climatically and environmentally, it might be exotic to a Canadian and an Indian alike. Culturally, if we accept that the Mediterranean belongs to the Western hemisphere then it should not be called exotic by westerners. However, such a generalization is problematic as well, because few regions have the cultural diversity of the Mediterranean basin. Spain, Italy and France obviously gravitate easily towards the western world, North Africa and the Middle East easily towards the Orient and things are tricky with a country like Greece with the whole Europe / cradle of western civilization etc etc thing and yet a clearly more eastern character than the vast majority of other western cultures. So, I guess, it comes down to the person using that term and their own culture / place.
On the other hand, Greece is most definitely not a tropical country. It is very much so a temperate country. Greek tourism promoted so much the "Greek summer, sun, islands, beaches" package that people created this image that Greece is always warm like the tropical places. There are worse things too, as some people are not aware there is also a mainland apart from the islands lol, even though all the islands together do not make up even 20% of the size of the mainland!
All these do not necessarily have to do with the racism. I mean, Americans might consider Greece a tropical country but I doubt Europeans do too. The racism of the north towards the south is parts founded on the convenience of safely frowning upon somebody who is techincally considered white as well. Because POC racism has become a no-no and is very much (and thankfully) considered despicable in the north, the need for hatred and competitiveness that infests some people's hearts was channeled towards people, who are white too, but apparently they are corrupted, poor, unreliable and inefficient, therefore "rightfully" loathsome. Racism is always about the need to establish yourself as more powerful and stable against other groups of people. If it is not channeled through skintone, it will find other ways to be channeled. The south has its own forms of racism as well, usually targeting "cultural inferiority", cultural and religious differences. That is because the south is way prouder of its culture and history and that's where it feels the more unshakeable in its power to manifest a racist attitude.
That's not to say that there aren't still northerners believing the whiter you are, the better. Of course there are and especially in the past it was more common to try to categorise Greeks as POC for racist reasons, including to deny them the right to their heritage (because as we all know, ancient Greeks were green eyed redheads with freckles). But in any case, the most common rhetoric has changed since, and it is about us and other southerners being lazy and incompetent. Yay.

I don't know why people think that a place or culture that shows Goddess worship is matriarchal. As an Indian, worshipping Goddesses and celebrating fertility of women are very common here. There are plenty of rituals here that celebrate the first time a girl has her period(I myself have experienced this), where we are gifted with new clothes, gold, sweets, etc. None of this means that the culture is in anyway matriarchal. In hindu temples, you can see images and sculptures of warrior goddesses who are slaying demons(who are always men) yet it is still a very misogynistic society.
I have actually read the book that anon took the passage from. It's called Philosophical trends in the feminist movement by an Indian Maoist named Anuradha Ghandy. It's strange how the author makes such claims despite knowing that Goddess worship and all exist even now in our culture.
I've mainly seen this book recommended as a valid criticism against radical feminism but the truth is the author would've been called a "swerf" or "terf" by them if they read the entire book. At one point, she makes the mistake of assuming radical feminists support prostitution and criticize them -"The radical trend by supporting pornography and giving the abstract argument of free choice has taken a reactionary turn providing justification and support to the sex tourism industry promoted by the imperialists which is subjecting lakhs (100.000s) of women from oppressed ethnic communities and from the third world countries to sexual exploitation and untold suffering."
However, her criticism of liberal and post-modern feminism is spot on.For eg:" In effect post-modernism is extremely divisive because it promotes fragmentation between people and gives relative importance to identities without any theoretical framework to understand the historical reasons for identity formation and to link the various identities." So I'd say it's a good reading for those who want to know why liberal feminism and postmodernism are problematic.
Interesting, I'd never heard of this book before. I wonder when it was written because there were strands of second wave feminists who did support porn and the "sexual revolution" (i.e. Ellen Willis) but surely not enough to constitute referring to supporting porn as a tenet of radical feminism. I think there's so much ahistoricism in regards to prehistory because so many feminsits operate under the assumption that matriarchies prove that patriarchy is unnatural and evil and therefore go to ridiculous lengths to interpret anything as being matriarchal. By the same token, many misogynists love to see matriarchies as proving the opposite, that there were these primitive backwards "nature based" societies run by women that had to be defeated for society to progress. So there's no wonder the idea of prehistorical matriarchy is so prevalent. And like you say, we are so much more skeptical and realistic when it comes to putting women on a pedestal in our modern societies and cultures being indicative of how women are treated, but put these same artefacts or ideas a few thousand years ago and suddenly it's proof of matriarchy!
I like her passage on postmodernism.

"Since the fifties, the American public has heard a great deal about background radiation in cities such as Denver, though background radiation has little to do with the hazards of ingesting fission products.  In the United States, the public also heard that nuclear power is 'green.'  In the sixties, nuclear power saved fish that might have perish in hydroelectric dams.  In the 21st century, nuclear power promises a carbon-free future.  Soon after the Fukushima catastrophe, public relations agents dusted off a five-year-old report on the dangers of the coal industry.  It was a maneuver that had been seen before:  The Atomic Energy Commission first trumpeted the hazards of coal mining in the mind-sixties.  In the decades before the Fukushima disaster, the Japanese government and corporate proponents of nuclear power censored the Chernobyl disaster from textbooks and spent millions on advertising an image of nuclear safety.  Meanwhile, Japanese power companies glossed over accidents, doctored safety reports, and failed to purchase emergency equipment for fear of alerting workers of the danger of the industry.
Another important way to neutralize the plutonium disasters has been to naturalize them.  In the last decade, officials have repurposed the Hanford, Maiak, and Chernobyl territories as wildlife preserves.  The Chernobyl zone, open to tourism, features a breathtakingly beautiful terrain of forest, lakes, and streams.  Journalists and scientists describe it as teeming with wildlife.  Tim Mousseau, an evolutionary biologist, however, tracked birds in the Chernobyl zone and found a zone  of ecological calamity.  Even in areas of moderate contamination, 18 percent of the birds he followed had deformities; 40 percent of male barn swallows were sterile, and the total number of swallows was depressed by 66 percent.  Mousseau could not find in the hot spots bumblebees, butterflies, spiders, or grasshoppers.  Whole zones in the Zone are dead.  In eastern Washington, the territory around the Hanford Reservation is promoted as the last stand of original shrub-sage habitat in the Colombia Basin, yet periodically deer and rabbits wander from the preserve and leave radioactive droppings on Richland's lawns.  In the eighties, the Hanford Reach gained recognition as the last free-flowing stretch of the Colombia River.  Watching the river's water level rise and fall with demands for electricity in Portland while measuring the radioactivity of Mulberry tree on the graded gravel banks of the Colombia makes calling the Hanford segment 'wild' a reach indeed.
Wine production in the Colombia River's region's latest diversification project.  Tourists are encouraged to tour tasting rooms located in a large arc around the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, which figures as an unnamed area on the vineyard tour map.  As I tasted a few wines, I mentioned to a vintner that a lot of Wanapam Indians down the road are sick with cancers, and that a Centers for Disease Control study found local Indians had a one in fifty chance of getting cancer, in part because of there traditional diet of Colombia River fish.  If the study is correct, I asked, how did she feel about growing wine grapes so near the mothballed plutonium plant?"
