Revisiting my very old P&P fic!
So I didn't initially remember which fic had the Jane-Darcy scene, only that it was an early one, so I went to AO3 and looked at some of my very early fics to refresh my memory before realizing it was Season of Courtship all along.
I only mention this because it was a bit entertaining to re-visit my old P&P fic (despite the very uneven prose) because they were weird and often melodramatic but are still recognizably mine. Like:
Left to Follow: my first Austen fic ever and it's largely trolling. Darcy has apparently cheated on his wife, who has returned home to her father and family with her sickly baby. It's from the perspective of her father. The twist, revealed at the end, is that Darcy is actually the sickly baby and the POV character is his grandfather the earl. (This originally grew into a much longer and more meandering fic than the AO3 version but it kind of sucked, so I only cross-posted the first part.)
Sword and Sorcery: a vaguely tongue-in-cheek series of vignettes in a fantasy AU. Wickham is a vampire, Elizabeth has plant powers of some kind, Georgiana is unexpectedly a necromancer, and Darcy is an empath and has become so overconfident about his (genuinely very strong) abilities that he doesn't seriously think about why he's not picking up much from Jane (it's because she is also an empath and naturally resistant to his powers) or even bother trying to read Elizabeth properly until she rejects him.
Catalyst: a twist on the then-popular fanon of Darcy only really seeing the truth of Elizabeth's criticisms by talking about the Hunsford fight with a cousin like Colonel Fitzwilliam who advocates for Elizabeth's righteousness. In the fic, Darcy does end up talking about it with a cousin (Fitzwilliam's sister) who takes his side in such a forceful classist way that he realizes he sounded like that to Elizabeth.
Such Terms of Cordiality: a chaotic cluster of AU premises. Lady Anne and Mr Bennet used to be in love but she was persuaded away Anne Elliot-style and married Darcy's father instead (their respective children know nothing about this). Darcy and Elizabeth meet at Ramsgate the summer before the novel begins and fall in love with little complication. Jane is not in love with Bingley and struggling with the pressure to be. Lady Anne is still alive. Mr Bennet is opposed to Darcy/Elizabeth and she ends up confronting him about it. I had planned for it to be a reverse-forced marriage scenario, where Darcy and Elizabeth end up married without their canonical character growth and have to grow within marriage, but it's entirely voluntary (I never got that far).
Season of Courtship: my most popular fic even now and easily the most normal thing from that time (it does have some of the melodrama, but it's just about the canon engagement period).
The Widow: Tom Bertram falls in love with a widowed Elizabeth Darcy.
Incumbrance of Mystery: a cracky murder mystery in which Georgiana gets murdered.
Claims to Reputation: probably my personal favorite of these, but it's not quite a fair comparison because I revised it pretty comprehensively later on. It's an unfinished epistolary fic in which Lydia and Wickham's two eldest children, Bess and George, attempt to scheme and maneuver their way into fortune by exploiting their Bennet connections, confiding their true feelings and motives only in their letters to each other. Bess (the more calculating and amoral of the two) is largely successful with Collins's and Charlotte's mediocre son, while George falls genuinely in love with Elizabeth and Darcy's beautiful but extremely withdrawn and wary daughter. He, however, is hampered by the suspicion of pretty much everyone.
It's basically just this flurry of letters around the whole (double) business from everyone connected with it except Miss Darcy; you have to extrapolate what she really feels about it from the (deeply biased) perspectives we get from everyone else. There are also some references to Bess and George's younger sister, Bella, being a sort of inverted Fanny Price—she's the poor relation/niece raised at Mansfield Pemberley, but has been treated much more gently than Fanny ever was and is integrated into the family.
It was odd and challenging and fun!

China, IL: “The Funeral” | May 26, 2008 - 12:45AM | S00E01
This one feels daunting to me, and it’s not just because I cried while watching this. It’s more because I don’t know exactly how to adequately praise this one. I will say, I was excited to revisit this one, and it fuckin’ holds up. In fact, I was surprised by how much of this I remembered, because it’s been quite a while since I’ve revisited it.
Brad Neely was maybe the best thing about Super Deluxe, excluding Tim & Eric Nite Live. I honestly feel remiss not including his Super Deluxe work somehow in a more chronologicalized way.
It wouldn’t be until much later until this became an actual weekly series. When it became a weekly series, it underwent a cosmetic overhaul, with actual animation instead of a rapid succession of stills which this special and Neely’s Super Deluxe shorts used. I always wished they’d stuck with this more minimalistic format; though I may be alone in that. I remember some people saw this show as a harbinger of bad things to come, animation-wise. People who couldn’t hang with Tom Goes to the Mayor for it’s limited-animation probably REALLY hated this.
The plot of this episode: Baby Cakes finds a diary belonging to a woman. She was a professor at his college, where his father works, as well as the professor brothers Steve and Frank. She dated Frank, and secretly despised him. She hated a lot of stuff about her life, and spilled her truth on the pages of her secret book.
Baby Cakes finds out that he’s dead, and in fact the diary was taken from just outside the site of her fatal car crash. Baby Cakes begins to cope with the fact that he’s in love with a dead woman, and also harbors the secret knowledge that Frank, who is despondent, but also oblivious to the fact that she hated him. Eventually Baby Cakes, in an act of posthumous love, dramatically reveals the truth at the woman’s wake. Frank runs naked towards the graveyard where she’s buried his friends all come to his rescue.
I know this doesn’t all exactly sound like a hilarious romp. But Neely has a way with words and funny drawings that somehow make the material hilarious. Nearly every turn-of-phrase in this is meticulously written to be funny, and there are many expressionistic/imaginative tangents from these characters to keep it lively and interesting. There are subtle, blink-and-you’ll-miss-them sight gags. The imagery has great comic and dramatic timing. There’s references to the previous shorts thrown in there for those of us who’ve been along for the ride. It manages to be deep, soulful, hilarious, beautiful, and unpretentious.
It’s frankly incredible that I never got fully obsessed with the original shorts. I think that’s because I didn’t really like watching these on the Super Deluxe website. Sad! As a comedic influence, I underrate Neely drastically. There are all kinds of moments in this where I thought to myself “oh, I try to write shit like this all the time”. It’s sad to say that my barrier for appreciating him fully was a technical one. If I were able to buy these shorts on DVD and watch them in order on my television set, I probably would’ve repeated them into the ground. But.
The shot of the three kids on bikes, sorta apathetically watching the funeral party bury the teacher. It’s a small detail and they show it for like, a second. This bit might be the single strongest memory I have of this show. It’s just so great. Sorta sums up what makes this great, at least in my mind.
Anyway: This originally began airing on Super Deluxe in four parts, with a few extra title cards. It flows great as one long thing, though. It seems like it’s supposed to be one long thing, in my opinion. I watched both versions, curious to see if there was a lack of censorship in the one scene where Frank freaks out and starts cussin’ up the wake of his lady love. The version I saw was still censored. It’s on Brad Neely’s Youtube channel. The thing is, these probably wound up on Adult Swim’s site as well in this format, so maybe the shorts got bleeped too, and and maybe that’s what survives. Not sure.
Hey! GUESS WHAT? I have a wonderful surprise for you.
What follows is my attempt to piece together a complete listing of Brad Neely videos that were ever uploaded to Super Deluxe, along with upload dates and times. I’ve also included the descriptions from Super Deluxe. Where available, there are YouTube links. Shortly after this special, Super Deluxe was absorbed into Adult Swim’s website, where they offered a fraction of the Super Deluxe library with additional censorship to meet Adult Swim’s standards and practices.
NOTE: The running times listed are as they appeared on the Super Deluxe listing. I included them on the off chance that they would be required to help identify a particular video that may or may not have been retitled. For the most part it was unnecessary, but I don’t feel like deleting them. A few of the videos had a 0:00 running time attached, which is why some of them are not noted. I assume that was a glitch, because none of these videos are 0 seconds long.
ALSO NOTE: first there was a non-Super Deluxe short: Washington. I was trying to pin down a date, but the best I could do was I found an article from December of 2006 that said it played as part of the Spike and Mike Festival of Animation. I went to re-find this article and couldn’t. I guess that’s what I get for haphazardly closing tabs. A Brad Neely interview from the Super Deluxe era reveals that he sold the rights to the short to Spike and Mike along with the characters of Cox & Combes, which lead to him creating the Professor Brothers. I think they were characters from Creased Comics.

Okay, self-indulging moment here and also serious thinking.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A call-out back to Midoriya just about to lose himself to his misery--
But what's happening here is this:
Tumblr media
"Some hero..." not just any hero though, "Midoriya".
I'm going to point out once again how Horikoshi reverts characters to their child selves during honest moments--so we know that this moment really counts toward something.
If you follow my blog you know why I'm excited. But I also want to point out that in this post that I made back in March (when ch. 305 & 306 came out), I pointed something out that I thought and--this new chapter MAY have proven it right? We'll have to see how it's addressed later, but this is what I said back in March:
"I’ve been thinking about that for a long time now, because on more than one occasion, EARLY in the manga, Shigaraki had taken notice of Midoriya also:
Tumblr media
I mean at first glance this can be taken as villainous. “I need to learn more about him so I can defeat him”. But to me, from the GET GO, this was always just sad. His first encounter with Midoriya he immediately got All Might vibes from him, which brings me back to Shigaraki truly wishing AM had saved him long ago. To me in this panel looking at baby All Might, he’s still wishing and hoping that he’ll somehow get saved-deep, DEEP down (like so deep down he isn’t even aware of this desire to be helped)".
So--the desire to be saved being in there was correct. Not that I ever doubted that. But what I had always wondered was if Shigaraki took notice of Midoriya's willingness to just jump into things head first to save someone. And now, well, obviously he did. Because I, for the life of me, cannot think of any other reason that Shigaraki would be saying Midoriya's name of all people at a time like this.
Midoriya--a complete stranger. A complete stranger who came across as just a fanboy of an overblown celebrity-hero, just like everybody else. A complete stranger who gave him a brutally honest opinion that probably stung a little, but ultimately gave him a conviction to go on with. A complete stranger who continued punching the shit out of him after spilling his guts out on the battle field, refusing to listen and failing to--once again--understand. Why would he think of somebody like that?
Well, idk. He was there to see Midoriya rescue Bakugo when he was kidnapped. He was there to see Midoriya jump in to save All Might at USJ (who--at the time, nobody thought AM needed saving because of the simple fact that he's AM, so that definitely stuck out to Tomura). He was there to see Midoriya rescue his friend from Stain. He was there to see Midoriya rescue Eri from Overhaul. And an example of a moment where Tomura saw Izuku saving somebody that I feel goes unnoticed, is Izuku vs. Shouto at the sports festival. And I have to give a shoutout to @/mettywiththenotes (I am not tagging her because she avoids spoilers until the chapter drops!!) who wrote the post I just linked to--talking about how Tomura was probably affected by watching Shouto change drastically throughout his fight with Midoriya. What he took from watching that fight.
After this chapter, I think it's fair to say that maybe some of what's said in those posts I linked to holds some water. Because again---after all the hurt Midoriya *contributed* to (not necessarily caused--because he didn't)--why would Shigaraki think of Midoriya of all people in a moment of desperation?
I think it's because he really did notice all this time.
I actually think Shigaraki noticed from the beginning. I think he noticed that if anybody in the world was going to be the one to turn the tide and reach for him and save him, it was going to be Izuku Midoriya.

I know I keep asking you all these random questions, but- in AF, it always irked me that we never learned about Fowl Sr.’s return to Fowl Manor, given that he was recovering from being in a coma (I know his amputation sight would have been healed by then, but I don’t think he would have been strong enough to walk on a prosthetic for a while- he probably used crutches for a bit). Like... what was that like for the Fowls. I know that the books never go into it, but I would have hoped that it was a brief period of the Fowl Family being just... happy to be together again, even as they were having to dramatically restructure their lives again to adjust to the head of the family being home again, especially for Tim and Angeline. Any thoughts or headcanons or what-not?
Ask as many questions as you like! (That goes for anyone else as well.) It gets my brain going and motivates me to start writing things. Also sorry this took a bit, I've got medical crap going on rn.
As usual, I'm gonna toss this under a Read More, because boy, did this get long, I apologize. And I'm going to warn you, a lot of this delves into how I feel about Artemis' relationship with Tim and Angeline overall. But it's those feelings that drive most of my headcanons, so I feel like it's best to talk about them.
Let's start with Artemis Sr. and his state of being after rescue. I'm gonna pull some quotes from my copies of The Arctic Incident and The Eternity Code throughout my pondering, please bear with me.
At the beginning of TAI, we're given a laundry list of ailments Fowl Sr. has when he's dragged out of the water in the beginning of the book:
"Though the man's clothes were relatively intact, his body had not fared so well. His bare hands were mottled with frostbite. One leg had been snapped below the knee, and his face was a horrific mask of burns."
"He'll lose that leg for sure, (...) A couple of fingers, too. That face doesn't look too good either."
When it's Holly's turn to drag Fowl Sr. out of the water, his heartbeat is dangerously low, due to deadly cold water. We know she kept him alive, healed the chest wound caused by the blunt force of the shell Butler shot him with, as well as a blinded eye that wasn't mentioned previously, but we're not really told anything else, which I suppose leaves it up to our imaginations as to what ailments he's left with.
We know he lost his leg, but did he lose some of those frostbitten fingers? Frostbite doesn't fuck around (Mayo Clinic link, if you'd like), and while it's not mentioned, it would be likely his captors would have had to amputate a few of those as well, to prevent the dead tissue from eventually killing their meal ticket. His face was severely burned from the explosion, how extensive was the scaring after everything was said and done? We know magic can heal scars if that's what the magic is told to do, but Holly probably wasn't worried about that in the moment, and she makes this statement:
"I got him," she gasped, "One live Mud Man. He's not pretty, but he's breathing."
So even with Holly doing what she could, it sounds like Fowl Sr.'s condition was still really rough. Rough enough to need prolonged medical attention. He'd spent nearly two years in a coma before waking up in Murmansk, and the ordeal of his rescue was enough to throw him back into a coma, as we're told in The Eternity Code.
Except wait a minute. In Artemis Jr.'s diary excerpt, we're given some information that contradicts the previous book.
"It had been over two months since Holly Short used her healing magic on his battered body, and still he lay in his Helsinki hospital bed. Immobile, unresponsive.
The doctor's could not understand it. He should be awake, they informed me. His brain waves are strong, exceptionally so. And his heart beats like a horse. It is incredible, this man should be at death's door, yet he has the muscle tone of a twenty-year old.
(…) Holly's magic has overhauled his entire being, with the exception of his left leg, (...) He has received an infusion of life, in body and mind."
(...) my father had no need of medical attention. He simply sat up, rubbed his eyes, and muttered one word: 'Angeline.'"
So now Holly's magic apparently healed everything but the lost leg? What?
I love the Artemis Fowl books, but I will always be a little frustrated with their inconsistencies. But you know what? It's great for giving yourself permission to play around with your headcanons. If Colfer changes what he wants when he wants, I certainly won't feel bad about doing it.
I'm going to go with the TAI and say that Tim was still in a really rough state after everything. Ignoring that supposedly his muscles were fine, he'd still have to learn how to walk on the prosthetic. And tbh, I'm just going to believe that his muscles weren't magically perfect. Maybe easier to build back than they would have been without the magical infusion, but there was definitely gonna be work involved. And that's ignoring probable mental trauma. He was in a coma for a large portion of his captivity, but there was a brief period of time where he was conscious, with captors that maybe couldn't kill him, but definitely didn't treat him well (though it sounds like he was being a difficult captive, but yeah, of course, he's a Fowl lol.)
(Detour Thought: My mental picture of Artemis Senior has always involved heavy facial scarring, especially on the side of his face where the damage was apparently bad enough to blind him.)
But to get back to your original inquiry (Jesus, Blue, I am so sorry at how badly I've dragged this out) I do like to think there would be a period of recovery and restructure that would involve the Fowls getting to be a happy family together. Great potential for a hurt/comfort fic, if you ask me.
--
I'm going to be frank, (and this opinion puts me at odds with the fandom at large, I know) - from my interpretations of the books overall, while Artemis certainly had a strict upbringing with parents who were usually busy and definitely irresponsible, I never got the sense that it was a loveless childhood. Nor did I ever get the sense that Artemis feared his father as a person, but rather that he feared disappointing him, which at no point are we told ever actually happened. I've read these books a million times, I've never found anything in them suggesting Artemis ever disappointed his father, nor that Tim was ever actually cruel to Artemis. Strict, yes. Overly formal? Definitely. But not cruel.
Now, the fact that he felt he had to jump through so many hoops to maintain his father's approval? Bad parenting, Tim. Also, don't encourage him to be a criminal mastermind, maybe. But also Artemis is an over-achiever by nature, which Tim just either didn't clue in on or more likely imo, thought it was in Artemis' best interests as an heir of a criminal empire to be that way.
Aside from Tim and Angeline later suggesting he try to be more 'normal' and let go of his criminal tendencies, and that one incident of Angeline pulling a guilt trip (all of which is a whole other thing I won't get into rn), Artemis' parents speak positively to and about him. I just honestly think they don't know how to be actual parents, which, being aristocrats, tracks. They function almost more like older siblings after TAI, really, which isn't exactly great, but it could be worse.
We know his father used to read to him regularly when he was little (ending with a kiss on the head, which I always thought was sweet) and we know that Angeline was always warm and available to him whenever possible (until her grief-stricken dementia set in.) Artemis has a moment of angst at how strict/formal his upbringing was compared to the twins, but overall he generally speaks positively of his parents, and he loved and missed them enough to risk his life several times for them. Even when he's frustrated by their joined presence making it harder for him to conduct criminal activities, he still misses them and thinks about them often when he's away from them.
--
Which yeah, that's what this all boils down to for me. Artemis just wants time with both of his parents, and Artemis Sr.'s recovery, in my headcannon, would absolutely allow for that time he so desperately wanted, deep down. Assisting in the physical recovery, using the down time to really talk and catch up (without mentioning his fairy adventures, of course.) It would be a drastic change and awkward to adjust to initially, but overall I think it would be good.
And as for Tim and Angeline? I think there would be of course the joy of being reunited with the love of your life, because Tim and Angeline are absolutely soul-mates. But I also imagine there were many, many conversations of regrets and questioning how to move forward as a family from this point. Angeline seems to defer to Tim as the one who makes decisions for the family as a whole, but she isn’t afraid to give her input. I bet they were scared, in a way, because not only has everything changed, but the future is uncertain. They have to restructure their whole life, and while overall the changes are positive, they’re not going to be easy.
I also feel like it would be difficult for Angeline in particular because while Tim returning is a joyful thing, she now probably has some self doubts. Why did she fall apart so tremendously, at the expense of not only her well being, but her son’s? While she isn’t the best parent, I imagine Angeline will always carry heartache about her time in the attic and how she forgot her own son. And to an extent I bet Tim does too, because it was his disappearance that triggered it.
And now I want to write a fic about all of this, which I guess I'll add to my pile of ideas I've been playing around with.
I'd definitely like to hear more thoughts on the matter from you if you have them!

Grover Cleveland is the only president to be elected to two non-consecutive terms, and that was exceptional because he actually won the popular vote three times: he won in 1884, got screwed by the electoral college in 1888, then won again in 1892. Conversely, his successor/predecessor Benjamin Harrison was NOT popular, and only coasted into the office because his grandfather William Henry Harrison had briefly served in 1841 (shortest presidency in history, only 31 days).
For those of you wondering if the Gonad Lump is gonna try and run for another term in 2024, I don’t see him being more popular this time around. He lost the popular vote twice; George W. Bush is the only president to lose the popular vote and go on to be re-elected, in no small part because his approval rating skyrocketed to 90% after 9/11 and everyone thought the new Iraq war was justified at the time. History remembers him as the warmonger he was (though slightly more favorable in comparison to the Gonad Lump himself). If the Lump runs in 2024, he absolutely will not win the popular vote, though given how Republicans are trying to restrict voting rights, he very well could win the electoral college; he’d be the anti-Cleveland, losing the vote three times in a row.
His ego is torn; on the one hand he doesn’t want to run again because he doesn’t want to lose again, but on the other hand he can’t drop out of the race or else he’ll look like an even bigger loser for giving up. If he doesn’t run, he’ll have to pass the mantle of party leader to someone else, though let’s be honest, whatever stooge runs in his place will basically be running for him anyway. They’ll be running as his successor, framing themselves as a continuation of Trump’s term rather than a term of their own; he’d be president vicariously through them, they’d keep him on as an advisor or Secretary of State. But what Republicans are only just now starting to realize is that he’s a ball and chain weighing the party down; sure his base thinks he’s the most popular human being to ever live (ahead of Jesus and behind Ronald Reagan), but they only represent 30% of he country. He is SUPER unpopular overall, having lost them the House and the presidency and the Senate in quick succession; instead of cutting their losses and running someone new, they’re in denial and insist he actually won and the other side cheated, so they’re changing the rules going forward to give themselves an advantage (“the other side cheated, so we also have to cheat to beat them at their own game”)
It’s pathetic, but it works. What they’re doing is not technically illegal, because the constitution doesn’t actually say elections have to be free and fair. Elections don’t even have to exist; from the Revolution to the Civil War a handful of states never held presidential elections, instead leaving it up to the state legislatures to pick a winner and award electors themselves. Nowadays all 50 states hold elections and award electors based on the popular vote, but Oklahoma recently proposed going back to the old system; they’re very likely going to get rid of elections going forward because they can. That’s inexcusably anti-democratic, it’s morally reprehensible and wrong, but it’s not illegal, so there’s nothing we can do about it because the Supreme Court doesn’t care about morals. Just because something should be a law doesn’t make it a law; the system is FUCKED that way. The constitution technically says that the states may appoint electors however they see fit, so while getting rid of elections would be unpopular and despotic, the only way to stop them from doing so would be to pass a new amendment requiring all states to hold elections. That would require supermajorities in both houses of congress and then majority votes in three-fourths of all the state legislatures. We’re so politically polarized that I don’t think we’ll pass another amendment ever again.
The last real amendment was passed in 1971 (pre-Watergate), the 26th amendment, giving 18 year olds the right to vote; the 27th amendment was technically passed later in 1992, but it was written in 1789, intended to be the 11th amendment, but stuck in limbo because it was originally voted down. It wasn’t until 200 years later that a college student realized it was still a live amendment and could be passed if enough new states joined on (most amendments have clauses saying that if they’re voted down, then they fail, but this one was still technically in play); he wrote and encouraged state politicians to pass it just to see if it could be done. It isn’t even a controversial amendment, it says Congress can’t change their salaries in the middle of the term, they can only go into effect after the next elections.
So yeah. Electoral reform is probably doomed to fail because the Supreme Court will decide that the states can do whatever they want. It’s like how the electoral college is pointless and keeps letting losers win, but just because it’s bad doesn’t mean it’s “illegal.” It should be illegal, but barring an amendment we’re stuck with it. If the For The People Act passes and the 6-3 consecutive SCOTUS let’s it stand, states will one by one stop holding elections to get around it. You can’t reform an election is there’s no election to reform! Republicans will be taking a huge bet though, hoping that their constituents care more about winning than playing fair; it would be wildly unpopular to stop holding elections, but Republican voters would see nothing but the benefits, so they might accept it as a necessary evil, “for the greater good.” They don’t need to vote if their guy is guaranteed to win.
We need to overhaul the country, and if that means pissing off conservatives who are IN THE MINORITY then so be it (more Americans identify as democrats or left-leaning independents than Republicans or right-leaning ones). If that leads to a civil war, then so be it too! We can’t hold ourselves responsible for he behaviors of evil people; we can’t keep appeasing them, we can’t keep letting them threaten to tear the country apart if they don’t get what they want. Democrats don’t get what they want on a regular basis, and they have yet to tear the country apart (if you mention the George Floyd Protests, I need to remind you that the country is still in once piece), so Republicans need to learn to live with being powerless. If they throw a tantrum, it’s not our job to make them feel better. If an abuser threatens to do something drastic if you leave them, it’s not your job to stay. If someone is blackmailing you, you shouldn’t have to comply; they’re gonna be evil either way, you can’t control them, they’re trying to make you think it’s your fault when they do something wrong.

Commissions Redux
Tumblr media
Hi Folks!
This has been copied from my main blog and cleaned up a bit, since I’m trying to separate the fan stuff from the main to keep something like a semblance of an order. Commissions are therefore moved from Mana-chan’s Corner to here. They are still open and perfectly free, just read the rules, please. In case you wish to support me, you can do either of these things:
» Leave a Tip
» Buy Me a Coffee
As I am currently jobless (thank you Corona) every bit is appreciated.
» Full Update
For a long time I didn’t take any commissions because the fandoms and pairings I have inspiration for is a limited fraction of my active fandoms (i.e. the fandoms I engage with via reading fic, commenting, enjoying content, reblogging, etc.) and I didn’t want to disappoint.
Recently, in an unexpected strike of utter genius (which only took me like... 5 years to work out), I had the epiphany to compile a list of fandoms+pairings I’d be more than happy to write as you desire.
» Commission Rules/FAQ. Please read before commissioning.
» For full list of available fandoms/genres click below.
» Fandoms
» The Untamed | Mo Dao Zu Shi
The most recent fandom, also the one that currently dominates my mind.
Including: CQL, Novel, Movies. I haven’t read a lot of the source material, but I’m intending to and I already did some research. For now I think I prefer a mix of canons.
» Pairings
» Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian
» Jiang Cheng & Wei Wuxian (mostly gen, but I believe I could do something sexual/romantic as well, but please ask first if you have any specific ideas)
» Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing (please read the rules)
» Jiang Cheng/Wen Ning (tentative)
» Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian
» Nie Mingjue/Lan Xichen (tentative, though I mostly see myself as writing them on the side)
» Any version of the 3zun (same as above)
» Lan Xichen/Wei Wuxian
» Jin Zixuan/Wei Wuxian
» Specific Canons / Prompts
The Untamed basically exploded over my head and didn’t leave me alone. In the past few months a few plotbunnies developed which I’d all love to write at one point. You can chose to prompt me either of these or pick any general prompt, or anything you’d like to read, as long as it aligns with what I can write.
» The First Witness
Genre: Case Fic, Modern AU, Canon retell, Drama, Tragedy, Romance, M/M
Pairings: WWX/LWJ
Includes: Forensic Medical Examiner Wei Wuxian, Inspector Lan Wangji, Single Dad Wei Wuxian, Wei Sizhui / Wen Yuan, the dead ones are dead, Badass Grandmother Baoshan Sanren, Yunmeng Bros Reconciliation, Businessman Jiang Cheng, Murder Mystery, Pining, Getting Together, HIV positive character, past off-screen rape (mentioned only). It’s basically what it says, a canon retell wrapped in a modern day case fic. It was the first thing that I had inspiration for.
» Nurse Wei Wuxian slice of life Modern AU
Genre: Modern AU, slice of life, recovery, drama, tragedy, adoption, M/M, hurt & comfort, getting together, romance, fluff
Pairings: WWX/LWJ
Includes: pediatric nurse Wei Wuxian, pediatric nurse MianMian, elementary school teacher Lan Wangji, pediatrician Lan Xichen, intense care nurse Jiang Yanli, intense care doctor Wen Qing, teacher’s aide Wen Ning, Yunmeng reconciliation, only some are dead, Wen family+WWX living together.
Premise: Former convict Wei Wuxian, fresh out of nursing school, applies for a job at Dr. Lan Xichen’s pediatric practice. Lan Xichen (who sometimes takes pro bono foster children abuse cases) isn’t quite sold on the idea of a former felon turned nurse attending to already traumatized children, but upon interview decides to give WWX a chance. Not only does he never regret it, it turns out it’s to be the best decision he’s ever made, not only in regards to his practice. Meddling ensues, love blossoms, truths are revealed, happy end. Probably the fluffiest story on the list.
» ABO Yunmeng Shuanjie Fake Marriage AU
Not what you think. Does not involve pseudo-incest (at least not for a long time, haven’t decided on the end results yet). First ABO I’ve ever considered writing, but all the more exciting, since I know now what I want of it.
Pairing: WWX/LWJ (temporal, non-endgame - so far, platonic), WWX & JC (gen, ruling partners)
Includes: fake marriage, extra marital affair, male pregnancy, abo (mostly non-traditional, I think?), not actual pseudo incest, adoption, canon divergence, not everybody dies, Wen Chao being a monster, sexual assault (interrupted), golden core loss, NO golden core transfer, misunderstandings, complicated political situations, the Wens are saved and live in Lotus Pier, a-Yuan is still adopted, “sometimes love is not enough”
Premise: shortly after concluding the studies at Cloud Recesses LWJ starts courting WWX. Engagement is discussed between the two clans, but the Wen indoctrination and the burning of the Cloud Recesses gets in between. When LWJ refuses to lie in order to save WWX from Wen Chao’s assault, JC steps in and pretends to be the one engaged to WWX to save his brother from a forced bond. To prevent this from being debunked and to ensure a future marriage (which will now be more challenging to achieve, given the state of Cloud Recesses), LWJ and WWX mate and bond in the Xuanwu cave. Then Lotus Pier is sacked, JC loses his golden core, the Jiangs are dead and the Yunmeng siblings flee for their lives, find refuge in Yiling, etc. Plays out as in canon except they find out WWX is pregnant and transferring the golden core would cause an abortion. WWX still says do it, but changes his mind in the last minute, leading to JC finding out about his plan upon waking up and remaining coreless. They flee to Meishan and marry to protect WWX’s reputation (since a marriage would now be impossible for a long time on both sides - Gusu and Yunmeng, AND JC needs WWX more than ever and WWX is not abandoning his little brother) Sunshot happens, WWX invents the control tower & still saves the Sunshot campaign. The sixteen years that follow are utter chaos.
» Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian arranged marriage AU
You know what this is inspired by.
Pairing: Nie Mingjue/Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian (unfullfilled, for a long time)
Includes: arranged marriage, some characters die, Nie Mingjue dies but later, revenge, wwx adopts a-yuan, canon divergence, slow burn, learning to love, the Wens live, political intrigues, wwx and nhs teaming up against jgy
Premise: To save the Wens and himself from qi deviation Wei Wuxian marries Nie Mingjue (in spite of being in love with LWJ). Slowly some truths are revealed and feelings blossom but some tragedies cannot be prevented. NMJ realizes the feelings that are between WWX and LWJ, but they both marry regardless. Later WWX realizes that NMJ is similarly in love with Lan Xichen. With time they learn to love and respect each other, NMJ learns about what WWX did for JC, WWX learns clarity to play for NMJ when JGY nearly succeeds killing him (WWX suspects but he has no proof). NMJ still dies (disappears) and widower WWX spends the next decade or so seeking revenge and searching for his husband’s body so that he can rest in peace. It’s all very bittersweet, but there’s a happy ending.
» Hakuouki + Extended Universe
The longest active and steadiest fandom. I know exactly what I’ll write and what not.
Including characters from: Urakata, Toki no Kizuna, the most recent overhauls (Kyoto Winds, Edo Blossoms). I’ve seen all three anime seasons, played a few routes of Kyoto Winds and read some walkthroughs. I’m not completely done with all of them, but I’ll take the time to research if the commission demands it.
» Pairings
» Harada Sanosuke/Nagakura Shinpachi (I lovingly refer to them as my naval battle cruiser)
» Harada Sanosuke/Shiranui Kyou
» Shiranui Kyou/Takasugi Shinsaku
» Kondou Isami/Hijikata Toushizou (tentative)
» Hijikata Toushizou/Saitou Hajime (tentative)
» Nagakura Shinpachi/Saitou Hajime
» Saitou Hajime/Toudou Heisuke
» Yukimura Chizuru/Sen-hime
» Ibuki Ryuunosuke/Kosuzu (please read the rules)
» Specific Canons / Prompts:
I’ve had a number of inspirations for this, which I’ve never written, but would love to delve into. You can chose to prompt me either of these or, of course, pick a general prompt.
» Fabulous Family Series
The one in progress, you can check it out on AO3. You can prompt me in this, if there’s something you’d like to read.
Pairings (current and planned): Harada/Nagakura, Kondou/Hijikata, Okita/Chizuru (casual), Heisuke/Saitou, Takasugi/Shiranui, Chizuru/Sen-chan, Ibuki/Kosuzu, Ibuki->Saitou (one-sided crush), Saitou/Chizuru (temporal)
Tags: adoption, modern AU, lgbtq+ issues, M/M, genderfluid character, disabled character (future), teenage pregnancy (future), slice of life, sexual assault (future), child abuse (future reveal), romance, ace/aro character, casual sex, underage sex,
» Gender Swap AU
Main Ship: Harada/Nagakura
Side Ship: Ibuki/Kosuzu
Summary: Sannan secretly tests a version of his experimental Ochimizu on a few of the captains. The result is that the new day dawns with some drastic changes to their bodies that have nothing to do with white hair, glowing eyes or bloodthirst, but with a whole other set of complications.
Premise: Original story was supposed to be about Shinpachi developing and unexpected attraction to Sano, them “experimenting” together and Sano falling pregnant. While the others manage to turn back to their original bodies, Sano doesn’t and it is all very complicated. Eventually he does (after giving birth), but instead of it being a good thing it just makes things more complicated. In the end, he choses to live in a female body instead of death and marries Shinpachi. Would include trans issues, gender dysphoria, friendship vs. love, the nature of attraction, respect, feminism and female issues. I wanted to write it as a multi-chapter, but never got around to it. But I’d love to put it out there in any form I can.
» Prince of Tennis
Tentatively putting this down as one of my oldest fandoms. I never wrote for it as cosistently as with other fandoms, but a few years back I rp-ed it for quite a while and could probably still write for it, if the pairing’s right.
Including: ShinTeniPuri characters up to Pirates and Black Holes (I haven’t read much further, but I’ll probably catch up at one point? I always do.)
» Pairings / Characters (mostly Shitenhouji and Higa centric)
» Oshitari Kenya/Shiraishi Kuranosuke
» Oshitari Kenya/Chitose Senri
» Oshitari Kenya & Oshitari Yuushi (gen, ask me about cest)
» Shishido Ryou/Oishi Shuuichirou
» Oshitari Yuushi/Kikumaru Eiji
» Oshitari Yuushi/Hirakoba Rin (this relates to that rp)
» Kai Yuujirou & Hirakoba Rin (both gen and slash)
» Kite Eishirou/Hirakoba Rin
» Watanabe Osamu/Sakaki Tarou
» Higa gen
» Shitenhouji gen and casual relationships (ask me about specific ones)
» Hara Tetsuya/Taira Yoshiyuki
» Mori Juuzaburou & Hara Tetsuya (mostly gen, but I probs could do casual slash as well)
» Ochi Tsukimitsu/Mori Juuzaburou
» Marui Bunta/Hara Tetsuya (you will never get this, but it derives from that rp I did and would still def write it if people are interested)
» Tango Pair (Sanada Genichirou/Atobe Keigo)
» Specific Canons / Prompts
Most of what I had in my head has faded but a few things remained. Of course you can also come with your own prompt at me.
» College AU, future fic
Premise: Everyone has grown up and moved on. The Oshitari cousins are now rooming together, both studying medicine at Tokyo University. They’re upper neighbors with Shishido Ryou (paedagogy) and Oishi Shuuichirou (medicine), who both miss their doubles partners, but have seemingly moved on from their middle school days and broken hearts. No such thing can be said about Kenya, who can’t get over his break up with Shiraishi following their graduation, or Yuushi, who seems to hold secrets of his own.
I haven’t developed much for this, most of it are scattered ideas, but I’d love to explore it. I’ve thought of some pairings for it, but none of them final. It would also leave a lot of room for casual stuff or one-night stands. It’s actually an ideal prompt premise, from that standpoint.
Pairings (at start, no necessarily final): Oshitari Kenya/Shiraishi Kuranosuke (past), Oishi Shuuichirou/Shishido Ryou (current), Oishi Shuuichirou/Kikumaru Eiji (past), Shishido Ryou/Ootori Choutarou (past), Oshitari Yuushi/Kikumaru Eiji (current, secret),
» It takes two to Tango / Tango towards Destruction
An old fic that was supposed to be a series which I never finished, but could pick it up and remaster it. It’d be a nostalgia project.
Pairing: Tango Pair
Premise: Atobe’s father finds out about him and Sanada dating and threatens to disown him if they don’t break up. In the original Atobe runs away, but I’m thinking now he simply might not take it seriously enough and then it would escalate. He ends up moving in with the Sanada family. Your typical rich boy loses everything and struggles through poverty, finding meaning, building a life for himself, coming off age.
» One Piece
A fandom older than even TeniPuri it’s been with me the longest. Unfortunately it doesn’t inspire me anymore the way it used to, but I’d still be able to write some things for it, if the right muse struck me. I kinda want to. Nostalgia, you know.
» Pairings
» Zoro/Sanji
» Ace/Zoro
» Ace/Sanji
» Luffy/Law (tentative, like, I ship them hard but I don’t know if I’d be able to write something for them? Oh but I’d like to try)
» Mihawk/Shanks
» Mihawk & Zoro & Perona family dynamics
» Zeff & Sanji adopted family dynamics
» Usopp & Yasopp gen
» Izo? I’d like to try an Izo.
» Canons
» Canonverse
Set in the original canon of the fandom.
Including (not limited to): backstory - past canon, present canon, future fic (please specify), canon divergence
» Modern AU
Including (not limited to): no powers, modern with magic (potential, please ask), slice of life, mystery, case fic, ‘job AU’ (coffee shop, doctors, idols, etc., please specify/ask)
» Sci-fi AU
Including: original sci-fi canon, Star Trek, Star Wars, Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, Dune (tentative), Hyperion (tentative), for everything else ask. I know a lot of sci-fi, but not enough lore for each of them to set a story in. I might be interested but it'd necessitate research.
» High Fantasy AU
Including (not limited to): original fantasy canon, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Witcher, but overall I’d prefer if you ask about this. I haven’t read/seen a lot of the most recent and popular franchises (mostly because I’m writing my own high fantasy and don’t want it to be too influenced by other things, and someone already told me it sounds like Game of Thrones, so that one’s a big no. Sorry...)
» No Powers, other than modern AU
Including (not limited to): everything that doesn’t fall under the modern AU list, but has no powers in it, i.e. historical AU (specify time & culture), future AU (near & far), cyberpunk dystopia (possibly), post-apocalyptic (possibly). I don’t write zombies.
» Superpowers / Hero AU
Including (not limited to): X-Men, Avengers, Wildstorm Universe, original superhero canon
» Genres
I do mostly serious stuff, like drama, tragedy, intrigues, arranged marriage, tragic backstory, etc. I like to put my characters through a lot of suffering. I always joke that it’s very easy to spot my favorite character by the amount of torture I put them through. I feel that it makes the happy ending weigh even more. Sometimes I even prefer a bad ending, if it gives the story more meaning (I mean, imagine LotR trilogy have a happy ending. It would totally take away all the development and the lessons the characters went through.) I wish I could write light stuff but so far I have not succeeded. I use a lot of sarcasm and irony though?
My shorter fics tend to be fluffy and sweet rather than funny, if full of playful banter and teasing. Relationships are usually depicted in a naturalistic rather than romantic way (I’m ace/aro myself, and I have lots of opinions about the nature of love and attraction, and how a functioning relationship ideally looks like and it tends to seep into my writing). Instead of traditional romance I like to write a non-traditional one. Slow burn, instead of love on first sight. Learning to love instead of falling hard. But it also depends on the pairing. I can write most things if I put my mind to it, so don’t hesitate to prompt me and I’ll let you know whether it works for me or not.
I’m not shy of dealing with child abuse, assault, suicidal ideation, trauma, disability and other difficult topics in my writing, so if you wanna request any of these or something similar I’m a-okay with it, as long as you discuss it with me. I’m not knowledgeable in everything so it’s likely I’ll need to do research, but I’m more than alright with it. Honestly, it’s very probable that I’d love to try.
» Kinks
I’m okay with most stuff. Where I draw the line is the really hardcore stuff like scat and kinks involving feces, some forms of humiliation, zoophilia, necrophilia, mutilation, stuff like that.
I’m alright with both dub-con & non-con (although I refuse to depict is as normalized, or glorified), bondage, s&m, dom/sub, light bdsm (ask me about the harder stuff. I’m not against it, I’m just not always in the mood or right mindset for writing it), omorashi (tentative, ask me), daddy kink, breath play, age play, spanking, verbal humiliation, dirty talk, edging, come eating, orgasm denial,... all the good stuff.

I just binged all of the episodes of Mega-Man: Fully Charged that are out (40 on the Cartoon Network website) in one day. I have some thoughts to get out of my head.
Is it neat? No. Does it make sense? Probably not, but I’m inflicting it upon this small fandom anyway.
((Since I’m getting thoughts out about many different parts of the series there are spoilers underneath the cut.))
Thoughts about the overall series:
I’ll admit it, the series starts out a little formulaic. The early episodes are kind of repetitive, but it did get better. In my opinion, it really improves at episode 18 with the introduction of Wood Man. Not only is it the first time (I think) that Aki/Mega Man is visibly injured by his opponent, it is the first time, in my opinion, that the battle and its potential outcomes had weight to them. Everything after that seems to carry some of that weight as well.
It is a show targeted at young boys, so it’s not going to be super dark or mature, but the action sequences are pretty cool. The jokes are pretty funny too, and the ‘voom’ sound that Aki/Mega Man makes when he jumps is nice to hear.
I really like the emphasis that is placed on ending conflict peacefully/violence as a last resort as well as therapy and second chances for the misguided robots who regularly fight Aki/Mega Man. Like Fire Man! He mentions his anger management therapist, breathing exercises, going to a happy place, etc. in order to deal with his extreme temper. He’s still a villain due to his beliefs that humans are inferior and the fact that he is loyal to Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian, but he is actively trying to manage his anger. It’s a good message.
I also enjoy how Aki/Mega Man’s schematic copying works. Yes, he can use his rogues’ powers against them, but he has to deal with the negative personality traits he gains from them as well. He isn’t infallible.
I really like Mega Mini. I find him hilarious and he’s given me a lot to think about. Which leads me to...
Speculations about Aki/Mega Man’s powers:
How did he get them?
The series hasn’t shown us how Aki/Mega Man got his powers, and by extension Mega Mini.
Doctor Light doesn’t seem to know that Aki is Mega Man, which doesn’t make sense. He built Aki, so he should have known that his son had combat capabilities. This raises the question: Did Aki always have the capability to become Mega Man?
If he did, then that could mean a few things:
One, Dr. Light knows and is waiting for Aki to tell him on his own terms. Perhaps he built Aki’s frame during the near end of the Hard Age war to use as a double agent, but didn’t get the chance to activate him because the war ended soon after he was finished. Not much later he had Suna, his wife passed or left him, and he wanted her to have a sibling when she was older. He revisited Aki’s frame in his lab and built a more normal looking system over it, keeping the combat capabilities out of a sense of paranoia and programming them to only emerge if Suna was in extreme danger. When Suna turned ten he activated Aki, gave her a sibling that could protect her, and honestly forgot about the combat functions as the kids grew older. Until he saw Mega Man for the first time.
or
Two, Dr. Light legitimately doesn’t know. He didn’t build Aki with combat capabilities at all, choosing to make him as close to a human being as possible. Which raises another question.
If Dr. Light didn’t build him with combat capabilities, who did/who gave them to him?
Aki seems to be built and programmed as close to a human child as possible, meaning that it’s highly unlikely he modified his own body that drastically. His dad didn’t do it, so that leaves two options. Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian or some other mysterious benefactor.
If it was Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian, it could make sense. He seems to resent Dr. Light somewhat, and given that he was able to overhaul Chauncey into a combat machine it wouldn’t be out of the question for him to be able to do the same to Aki. He also seems incredibly invested in Aki/Mega Man, wanting the boy to join his cause. He could have kidnapped Aki, modified him and improved upon Namagem’s design, and then wiped his memory of the event and sent him back. Quite possibly as an act of spite to Dr. Light and his ideals if he could corrupt Aki/Mega Man without mental tampering.
If it was another, mysterious benefactor, then it could be someone working against Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian who needed the city to have a noble hero. Who approached Aki and asked him, got his permission, and disappeared once everything was done.
Why Mega Mini?
Mega Mini is particularly intriguing to me. Why is he there? Is he meant as a fail safe? As a mentor? Simply someone to repair Aki/Mega Man and keep him in fighting shape? He seems to be able to control everything relating to Mega Man, with or without Aki’s input, so how far does that control reach? Would it be possible for him to take full control of Aki’s body? Or is he limited to only giving advice and being unable to really refuse any of Aki’s orders? Not a lot of answers here, but it sure is something to think about.
Why does he pick up personality traits with the schematics?
Could it possibly be another kind of failsafe? He has the one that limits him to having only three schematics on board, and we’ve seen the consequences of not having that. Perhaps it’s a purposeful flaw in order to keep Aki/Mega Man grounded to reality and humbled. Those moments where he loses control are a challenge, something that he has to overcome to grow as a person and as a hero, and a way to understand the robots he fights.
Is he based off of Namagem?
They share a lot of things. Their seeming mental age, the busters, the power replication, etc. It’s mentioned to Aki/Mega Man more than once that Namagem is his reflection. Namagem doesn’t have the safety mechanisms that Aki has in place, and is seemingly more unhinged for it. Regardless of who gave Aki his powers, it is entirely possible that Namagem was the prototype. The first one that Aki’s powers were modeled off of. And is Namagem aware of this? Not only are the two of them foils, their family seems to be as well. The relationship between Dr. Light, Aki/Mega Man, and Suna is the antithesis of the one between Namagem and Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian. This leads me to what I created this post for in the first place...
Speculations on the relationship between Namagem and Sgt. Night/Lord Obsidian:
This one... makes me extremely uncomfortable.
The first time we see Namagem is during the end of the Lightfall two-parter. He comes to get Lord Obsidian away from Aki/Mega Man after the man’s plan has backfired. He is shown supporting Lord Obsidian as they return to their base with the other villains of the show, and refers to him as Father. He seems obedient, dedicated, a generally perfect dragon to Lord Obsidian’s big bad. That doesn’t last long.
The next few times we see Namagem he is disobeying orders, going out to fight Aki/Mega Man despite being repeatedly told not to. He clashes with Sgt. Night’s strategy of waiting for the right time, preferring to charge in and let his fists do the talking. He’s essentially a brash, rebellious teenager who thinks he knows best. He’s Aki/Mega Man’s foil. They’re alike in that way, though Namagem takes it to the extreme. He’s what Aki could have been if he didn’t have his failsafes, Mini Mega, or a supportive family.
Sgt. Night is harsh with Namagem in the same way he’s harsh to the other villains who follow him. He puts them down verbally, calls them useless and generally degrades them. This alone isn’t what puts me into uncomfy territory though. That came with episode 31, “Big Bad Dreams.”
In the dreamscape, Aki/Mega Man finally fights back using Hypno Woman’s powers to force Namagem to see what he fears most. Aki/Mega Man is unable to see what Namagem is terrified of, but we the audience do: Lord Obsidian’s reflection on the windows of a building, massive and looming over Namagem. And what does Namagem do as he sees this? Cries out, flinches, and holds his hands above his face/head like he’s preparing to take a hit. Aki/Mega Man throws him from the dreamscape soon after.
When Namagem comes out of the dreamscape and tells Sgt. Night what happened, he’s belligerent in the face of the man’s remarks, getting up in his personal space and generally being angry. This changes as Sgt. Night walks away. The second he transforms into Lord Obsidian Namagem’s entire demeanor changes. The man is walking away from him but he flinches, cries out, shakes, curls over and in on himself. He seems absolutely terrified.
I know that this is a children’s show, maybe I’m thinking too dark, but those moments are sticking in my brain. I want to know:
What in the holy hell happened to make Namagem so afraid of Lord Obsidian (not Sgt. Night, but Lord Obsidian) specifically?

Alright in Funamu one can apparently become.a god. So. How would your primary and secondary muses of your choice react to attaining it and how do you think the scenes would likely play out (for example the closest we have to canon ascension scene is Yonaka falling in despair and then ripping her tormentor apart)
Tumblr media
In the past I have considered God AUs for both Lobco and Elwine, but they have always been in the scenario that they were born as Gods, not that they inherited it. In that case I feel that things would be drastically different and that’s a topic that would require quite a lot of discussion so for now I’ll just stick with Elwine as far as primary muses go.
As I play Elwine she was a person who knew from when she was very young that she had been created for a very specific purpose. Before she had the ability to critically think, before she even fully begun her training, before she had cemented herself as a person she had been told “you were meant to fight this war that’s on the horizon”.
Due to this she built her life and worth around this identity and so her loyalty to Fumus is pretty damn concrete. (That said, were it to ever actually be challenged I’d say that she would be put her sister and specifically Vivi’s Egmont over him but even she doesn’t know this).
So for her to be given Godhood that means she would have inadvertently usurped Fumus and that would...make her feel very unsure of herself.
Elwine is not an especially empathetic person and while she has an incredibly violent streak she doesn’t get much enjoyment out of abusing the weak or those who can’t or won’t fight back. That means a lot of people, not just the angels of Pitch would be finding a lot of reprieve and peace. For a while Elwine wouldn’t try to make any major changes as she adjusted to her newfound powers and tried to decide where to go from there.
She never considered herself much of a leader but she’s also not one to waste time hemming and hawing and bemoaning anything about her life. Least not after the initial pain caused by her sister’s departure. She is very much a person to see things for what they are, find the needed solutions, and act.
After that I see her as being very pragmatic. She wouldn’t be unnecessarily cruel, but she would probably come off as incredibly callous and distant as she wouldn’t make any decisions based on empathy for any individual’s plight.
I think she would promote (Vivi’s) Ryan if he were to potentially take it up--though all things considered he might not in which case I imagine the hierarchy would remain very much the same, the difference being that she would likely give Taffy more authority. While she may be God now, he has still existed for much longer than she has, and has had much more experience with the ins and outs of this sort of rule.
When it eventually did come to making any sort of changes...well, that would be heavily dependent on Satanick of course and I have seen a whole array of Satanicks some with very different interpretations. I don’t muse him at all myself so it’s a little difficult to predict how he would respond to Fumus suddenly being replaced--and depending on how that happened, dead. I know of some who would rejoice and feel freed, some who would need an adjustment period, and some who via stockholm and other awful shit would fall apart so ??? I can’t say too much of what actually WOULD happen but what Elwine would like to do is find some moderation.
Given her own obsession with fighting and angry/violent streaks I can’t really see her doing a complete and utter overhaul (and quite frankly that wouldn’t be especially smart) but she’d want to make sure they remained with some sort of truce. Awful as some aspects of her can be she knows it’s only the smart option to take a more moderate approach.
I think the biggest point of contention would be in the case that if Fumus was simply stripped of his power, she wouldn’t feel inclined to punish him for what he has done.
Elwine genuinely came to be very fine with Fumus’ punishments (and I do think that for a while she served as Nadine’s replacement) and while she doesn’t think it’s “right” she also thinks that as her creator--as the creator of ALL of them, Fumus was entitled to do as he pleased with them. She also felt that if they helped him keep the world functioning, because lord knows that is no easy accomplishment, then taking it was all part of their duties.
So there really would be no hard feelings, and she feels that it would accomplish little.
Doubtless there would be people not okay with that.
I’m starting to get rambly and I have a bunch of other thoughts in my head--I might go ahead and write more of them later (and I will write something for Daimajo as well, as you requested a secondary muse). Thank you for the ask! I hope it wasn’t too disorganized.

Rockland: Zeitgeist pre-release thoughts PT 3
The date of this post is 2/8/19.  Please note that information revealed at this time via Patreon or any of the creator’s blogs may be subject to change after this date.
I’ve got a few thoughts on Damien before the game comes out and I suppose any other random predictions I can through in here.
(Warning: Spoilers below for BTD2)
So there’s a couple of things right off the bat that will probably stay the same with Damien.  He’s still going to be Cain’s half-brother I believe, and he’s still in opposition to Cain.  Now in the original game he was working as a priest/exorcist and this might still be his occupation because it was mentioned there was another character (Rodchester Williams by Sugarhazard) who was a priest assisting him at the church.  There’s not too much I can hypothesize about Rodchester.  He’ll likely have a minor role similar to what .D was (Darqx’s character) in BTD2.
One big difference here is that it seems like we MIGHT get to meet Damien prior to getting taken by Cain.  The introduction is going through an overhaul, but otherwise there’s no guarantee if the scene where you talk with Damien at a cafe is at the beginning or the end.  I’m going to guess it is actually going to part of the introduction though.  The thing in the original game was that when Damien went to rescue the MC, he HAD to bring them immediately to the church to keep them safe from Cain (who apparently knows exactly where you were taken).  So meeting Damien in a cafe after the kidnapping doesn’t seem to make sense.  And unlike Sam, Damien was originally portrayed as being weaker than Cain.  So Damien wouldn’t be able to provide the protection the player would need if a very ticked off Cain came to either “collect” or kill you.
The interactions sound like they’re going to change drastically, but what this will do to Damien’s personality I don’t know.  In the original, he took things very seriously when it came to rescuing you and definitely showed concern about you felt after having been tortured by Cain.  In the bedroom however, he’s much more of the “dominant” type I’d say.  It showed a little more of his “fallen angel” side I suppose, since he WAS the son of Lucifer in the original game.  Since we didn’t get to see a whole lot of Damien in the first game, and these personality traits were what I was introduced to, I haven’t been able to really think of how he might change.  It probably depends on how much of his overall character has been rewritten to fit into the Rockland universe.
I still have to remember that like with the original game, Cain is going to be the main route and focus of “Zeitgeist.”  This time around, we’re definitely going to see more of Sam to get to know him better.  I’m curious to see if the amount of time we get to interact with Sam and Damien is equivalent to the amount of time we had with Damien in the original game, or a little bit more than that.  Theorizing what kind of relationship you develop with Sam and Damien is difficult since I don’t know if I’d be getting too far ahead of a limited script.
One random thought that occurred to me today is a possibility of WHY the MC ends up catching Cain’s eye.  It’d be interesting if it’s because he happened to notice you meet Damien AND Sam by chance (or at least one of them if the introduction is split into two paths as well, determining who you can meet again later).  I could see Cain thinking it’d be funny to snag an innocent victim the two had become recently acquainted with just to spite them.  It would be like taunting them saying, “You can try to stop me, but I’ll keep doing whatever I want to do.”
If the introduction of the game is split and you can either meet Sam or Damien, again, that could determine who you have a chance with meeting again later.  Or at least the way you choose to interact with the two could decide if you CAN meet either of them again later.  It may also play a role in how the two characters find the MC again.  Well, Sam might not need a way to find you (at least in the first game he just knew where you were).  But Damien only knew you were in trouble because Cain apparently had a phone lying around with his number in it.  I always found this strange, funny and interesting.  I chalked it up to the idea that Cain loved taunting Damien by sending him photos of his tortured victims.
Now I kind of doubt you’re going to get into a conversation with either Sam or Damien about what their “real professions” are on the fly if you meet them early on.  So I don’t really see how the MC might think to contact either of these two strangers for help with Cain.  There might be SOMETHING though that allows either of them to find you again after meeting you once.  I don’t know, my mind is running blanks again with ideas on how this would be the case. Maybe something happens that has either of them suspect you might be in danger.  I do think it’d be interesting if both Sam and Damien had gotten word that Cain was in the area so they were actively on lookout for him.  They might also very well be concerned about him killing or kidnapping anyone in the area, so they’d be keeping an eye out on missing person reports.
I think that’s everything I have at the moment.  The game is a re-make, so some core elements will stay the same, but the story flow and interactions are what’s mostly being tweaked I believe.  If I think of something else, I’ll label another part.  Otherwise, I’m good for now!

Adventure Into – Eorzea - Final Fantasy XIV
Although I’m not a full, hardcore Final Fantasy lover and lore nerd I fully appreciate each of the games in the series (Especially Final Fantasy X, who doesn’t love the almighty Tidus laugh and Blitzball?!). The one game I have completely fallen head of heals for however, is Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve tried so many MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) games before but this one, somehow, just keeps pulling me back being somewhat of a staple in my steam library. History Today we’re going to be talking about Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn and the brief history of the series. The Final Fantasy series has been around since 1987 in Japan, where it stated as a turn-based RPG (Role Playing Game) it grew in popularity and a few years later, in 1990, the English version was released to the public where still it grew! The turn-based formula has been a solid staple for a lot of the series, the first deviation from the formula, (as well as genre of game) Square’s first of two Final Fantasy MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) created in 2002, Final Fantasy XI. Final Fantasy XI dropped the turn-based system for a more active system and allowed players from all over the world to connect and explore the world in parties and enjoy the story that the Final Fantasy series was known for. But this wasn’t going to be their first rodeo with an MMORPG, as in 2010 Final Fantasy XIV was released and was a vast graphical and performance improvement on its predecessor with all new systems and jobs, people loved it. This however was short lived and didn’t do too well, and the game took a drastic turn in terms of story line by literally plummeting a moon down on the world that, in story terms, destroyed a lot of the land whilst concluding the story of Final Fantasy XIV (Known as version 1.0) in November 2012. But this wasn’t the end of FFXIV at all! With so many stories to be told, a world to still be used and a dedicated team leader Naoki Yoshida we get fast forwarded 5 years in game time and the game was revived into Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn (Or version 2.0) in August of 2013, once again with more graphical and performance improvements and a huge story overhaul that was truly needed. The Game When you launch you’re greeted with a simple main menu and very Final Fantasy-esk music chiming in the background, (and will actually change depending on the expansions you have!) you will then be thrusted into the character creation, one of my favourite parts even if it isn’t as detailed as other MMOs. Once your character is suitably looking, you will have the choice of the standard base game classes 2 Tanks, 1 Healer and 6 DPS’ each based in their respective starting zones.
·         Limsa Lominsa, the city of pirates, beaches – Marauder, Arcanist
·         Ul’dah the rich and merchants, desert – Gladiator, Pugilist, Thaumaturge
·         Gridania very …down to earth people, forests – Conjurer, Archer, Lancer
Once you’re situated into a world one of the MANY cutscenes this game has to offer will start giving you the general gist of the current situation and once completed, you’ll arrive in your starting town ready to get going! Now that we’re finally into the game itself we get the choice to play with either a controller or keyboard and mouse, this is because the game is also on PS4 and has extremely good controller support for an MMO, however, for this I will be using the standard KB+M. Since this is the tutorial I will rush through and allow you yourself, to learn and I will jump past this section. Once tutorial is over you’ll then be put into the world with other people and can properly start your adventure, getting quests, items, fightin’ critters and following the story of The Warrior of Light. The main part of the gameplay is simple and easy to pick up especially as you level up, getting more intricate as you reach the higher levels of 60-70. However, Final Fantasy XIV is still slower than other MMOs with a global cooldown of 2.5 seconds on standard skills and longer for other skills, which can feel particularly sluggish if you’ve come from WoW with a lot of procs (programmed random occurrence) and movement. Aside from the global cooldown though, the skills are all pretty unique with some beautiful animations that fit your level. I also absolutely love running boss fights, from the hard modes to the extreme and savage, it’s a great challenge with friends and randos! But it’s not only that, there are so many other activities you can do in this game that aren’t all about fighting and defeating creatures; you can actually take up a more tame job such as a crafter or gatherer, race Chocobos, play cards, buy and decorate a house, transmogrify your outfit into something adorable or even take a break during your big adventure to play an RTS (Real Time Strategy) instead! There is so much more this game offers you than just questing and fighting and it’s all so well incorporated into the world and lore that you can get absolutely lost in it and experience/enjoy it all! The Ups and Downs The biggest downside of the game is the monthly subscription system. Although personally I feel like I get my money’s worth every month with the amount of playtime I put in and will continue to put in, I know that’s not the case for everyone and can be a huge put off. Other than the price when it originally re-launched on the PS3 there were many limitations though recently they’ve started streamlining it a lot more (Since they had also stopped support of the PS3 in 2017) whilst keeping phenomenal console support which is very impressive. To give the subscription credit, it is cheaper than a fair few subscription games and comes with a couple of options, one being cheaper than the other, 1 character per world or 8 characters per world. The newest expansions are also bundled in the previous ones, so you don’t need to pay for them individually which is pretty awesome. But before even getting the game and the expansion you can play a free trial that allows you to level up all the way to 35 with every vanilla class giving you a small insight into it each one as well as saving you money since it’s an unlimited time trial, however some features are taken out so bots cannot make use of it such as creating parties, trading and mailing. But the biggest thing for me personally is that it’s not pay to win at all, there is pay for convenience but it’s purely optional other, than that it’s just lots of very cute and aesthetic looking things! The Mog Station (as the shop is called) has lots of cosmetic only items such as clothes, mounts, housing so if you want that cute mount ‘just cuz’? You get it! You want that boost because you don’t like that class at early levels? You get it! All in all Final Fantasy XIV has been an amazing experience and probably my favourite MMO out there. It’s is a staple in my library, and I will hopefully be playing it long into the future with the way it’s ever evolving! Thanks to the amazing team behind Final Fantasy XIV and of course, the players that make the experience as special as it is!

Hi. I really like your post about relationship headcanons. Can I ask for the same thing except for MiriDeku (Mirio x Deku), AmaDeku (Amajiki x Deku), and NejiDeku (Nejire x Deku) : who confessed first, when they started dating, when they got married, when they had their first kid (both Mirio and Amajiki 's case,) and how many kids they have? I love pairing Deku because I feel like he'll love anyone despite how different they may be. I also love your work, blog and of course the admins :)
Mod note: Sorry these are so long I hope these are okay though :’)
Togata Mirio x Midoriya Izuku:
Mirio had been interested in Izuku for a while, even before they met
When they finally met however, he felt a spark, he knew that Izuku was someone really special
Izuku had been in awe of Mirio since they first met
He definitely made a special page for him in his notebook detailing not only his quirk, but things he learnt about him (his favourite hobbies, his likes and dislikes)
Izuku was devastated after Mirio lost his quirk, even though Mirio never said anything, he understood perfectly just how helpless he must feel
Izuku then took it upon himself to make sure Mirio was never left wanting for anything, he always visited him at the hospital and after Mirio got discharged hung out with him at every opportunity
Mirio didn’t know when his feelings for Izuku changed so drastically but he knew that he wanted to spend every moment with him and so he wasted no time in confessing to Izuku
Poor Izuku blushed so hard he was steaming from his ears but managed to say yes
They didn’t really waste any time getting married, they loved each other and had the full support of their friends and family why wait?
And they got married on their birthday (Izuku’s 19th and Mirio’s 20th birthday)
About a year after the downfall of the Villain Association…
“Hey Izuku. Wanna have a baby?” (Pokerfaced Mirio)
“Whaaaa!!? (Blushing Izuku)”
They decide to adopt two children, a sweet boy who shared their passion for heroes and a shy girl who loved to dream
Amajiki Tamaki x Midoriya Izuku
Tamaki’s first impression of Izuku was that he was a timid individual like himself but he was quite surprised when he realized that he could also be determined and strong
He became even more attached to him due to their shared concern for Mirio and his well being
They started hanging out more often, and Izuku found himself becoming closer to the older boy
He admired his determination to become a better hero and live up to his hero name and his quirk was extremely unique and fascinating
They trained together, helping each other surpass their limits further
They spent so much time together that Mirio jokingly asked if they were dating and Tamaki blushed
After that he started thinking more about how he felt for Izuku and he realized that he did in fact love him
After this realization he couldn’t make eye contact with Izuku without a heavy blush, if it was hard for him to talk to him before it was a hundred times worse now
Izuku felt worried for him, did he do something to Amajiki-senpai for him to be so distant all of a sudden?
He decided to confront Tamaki during training and ask him why he was being distant and during that conversation Tamaki accidentally blurted out that he was in love with him
Both of their faces were deep red
“I…Amajiki-senpai…I l-l-l-like y-you too…” Izuku would stutter and the atmosphere would remain awkward for a long while until Tamaki asks Izuku if he could walk him home
Tamaki and Izuku move in together after school ended and lived together for about 3 years before Izuku proposed to Tamaki
Tamaki got very emotional and cried, he had never been as happy as he was at that moment
About two years after their marriage all their old friends from UA had a get together, and there they met Bakugo and Kirishima with their little girl
Needless to say they were charmed
Later that night while recalling the events of that day they both gushed about how cute Bakugo and Kirishima’s daughter was and Izuku just asked Tamaki what it would be like to have their own child
“Why not, Izuku?”
By the following week they adopted a cheerful little girl who was a bundle of energy
Hado Nejire x Midoriya Izuku
Nejire had always been a curious person, so when she noticed how interested one of her best friends were in Midoriya Izuku she also grew curious about the boy
Although when they first met Izuku, she really didn’t see why Mirio was so intrigued by him, sure his reactions were funny, the depth at which he analyses heroes were impressive and his quirk was strong, but other than this what was so special about him she thought
During Eri’s rescue was when she finally saw what set him apart from the rest of the students in class 1A
His tenacity, perseverance and courage, he had the makings of a fine hero, the kind of hero she knew would make a difference in this world especially during these hard times
She could never forget his face, his expression, how he fought Overhaul while going through excruciating pain as he pushed his body to the limit, all for the sake of a little girl
Her heart fluttered and her face felt hot every time she remembered
She had never felt this way before so she was quite puzzled as to why she felt so flustered when thinking about Izuku
For now, she just wanted to see more of him even though it made her heart flutter and her mind go foggy
Izuku was a little taken aback when he gained the attentions of the most energetic member of UA’s top three
Besides the point Hado-senpai was extremely beautiful and talking to her was no small task for the shy boy
He got used to talking to her eventually and opened up to her, telling her more about his dream of becoming a hero that people can look upto just like All Might, his frustrations, everything
He found that despite her bubbly personality she listened well when she was focused on him and gave sound advise
Izuku found himself admiring her more than he previously did
Nejire and Izuku’s friends were quite curious about them meeting so often that they decided to confront them
Uraraka and Iida asked Izuku about Nejire first, Ochako going so far as to ask if they were dating which Izuku denied but he felt a little surprised by how his heart leapt at the thought
When Mirio and Tamaki asked Nejire about how she only ever seemed to be with Izuku and looked different while she was with him she had an epiphany
All those strange things she was feeling? It was love! She smiled giddily why had she been so oblivious
After her realization she bolted, leaving Mirio and Tamaki confused but that didn’t matter, she had to find Izuku and tell him, ask him if he felt the same way
She looked everywhere, but he was nowhere to be found, desperate she ran out of the school building and using her quirk shot up into the sky still looking for him
She sighed in relief when she finally found him near the school gates with Iida and Uraraka and shot down landing on top of him
“Izuku! I’m in love with you, will you be my boyfriend?” She would just blurt it out like that and poor Izuku would be left speechless
He would probably ask her to repeat what she said because someone as incredible as Hado-senpai surely wouldn’t confess to him right? But she was and he accepted her feelings in a daze
After about 2 years of dating at a Christmas dinner at the Midoriya residence he proposed to Nejire in the presence of both their families
Nejire beamed, Izuku was a blushing mess and Izuku’s mom was in tears being comforted by Nejire’s mom
Barely 2 months after their wedding, Izuku woke up to an empty bed and the sound of his wife retching in the toilet
He rushed to where she was mumbling incoherently and scrambling to help her
After she was done Nejire turned to face Izuku with a tired smile, holding up a small white stick with a red plus sign
Izuku nearly fainted, “Really? You-you’re pregnant?!”
He would be so excited and faintly terrified but determined to do his best
Nejire gave birth to fraternal twins, two boys. One boy had the features of their mother while the other resembled his father

                                      [Updates / To-Do List]
Hey! Whats up peeps!
I wanted to take some of your time to sit down and give some insight about my current thoughts regarding what’s to come.
For starters, I wanted to tell I’ve been itching to do a new overhaul for a while. A lot has happened since the last one - roleplay wise and art wise.
It isn’t as drastic as a theme change, but I will be sure to add some features I miss since the last. Some features I can think of from the top of my head is:
Relationships page - This pertaining mainly the people who roleplay with me and those characters who have already some relationship estabilished with Yasuo.
In-Depth Headcanons page - This here featuring important moments of Yasuo’s life told previously. I have them tagged but they aren’t apart from minor headcanons. Unlike minor ones, major headcanons revolve around indepth and detailed information, such as tales about his childhood, his relationship with Yone, how did he end up with the scar upon the bridge of his nose, etc.
Worldbuilding page - Some of you may know I began a series of worldbuilding posts relating Ionia - but instead of photo reblogs with IRL references, I am hand painting those and fleshing it out through Yasuo’s eyes. He is a wanderer and I figured it would be great to describe the land through the man himself.
Rules and Muse info overhaul - Not so much the information but the way its written. I believe some information could be more objective and some better written. I have constantly touched up these two pages as I saw necessity, but I need to sit down and update everything eventually.
Specially on muse information, I want things to change a bit for better clarity. The issue here is many things changed after Taliyah arrived in the League. My portrayal was adapted a lot after the period and the way I see how Yasuo behaved before that is much more of what I would consider pre Taliyah - his mourning and still in pain self. His earlier years while adapting to his new cruel lifestyle and his fall from his path. I have already talked to every active blog who has interacted with me back then about this.
Everything else falls to excess of information that needs to be filtered and presented better.
Donation Page - Devoting so much time to this blog is always enjoyable, but its also a lot of work. Those following me for a while might have noticed I have set up a commissions page. I now draw for a living, and I don’t plan on asking for handouts. Still, if you like what you see in this blog and feel like leaving this windy hobo a tip, it would be very much appreciated!
[Possible] Thread Tracker - Some of my old followers remember I used to track some threads to make communication easier. I pretend giving the idea thought and bring this feature back since right now I am much more chill with replies. I have to manually update though because some of my followers reblog my threads (no issue on that regard by the way).
URL change - This has been mentioned before, but sometime ago I was gifted the ask-yasuo URL. I believe for a roleplay blog this is more fitting. Some people encouraged me to do so when I announced it but was insecure about it. My current one will go to another blog. Probably a personal.
Old Headcanon Overhaul/Rewriting/Retcon
Concerning older headcanons (this again applies to big stories only), some of them are very outdated and need rewriting and a good art overhaul. Most of them, since I began the blog still stand. I will definitely take my time to rewrite and apply fresh artwork.
For the old followers, this concerns the Jayce ship. I have pondered about it and I decided it is no longer canon for this blog’s timeline. That is so new Jayce blogs may approach if they wish and interact without being placed in a sepparate universe. The Jayce I used to interact with is long since gone and I see no point to keep him within my main roleplay circle. There were mentions of him on a thread with Rinidinger, but this is as far as it goes.
Standalone Headcanons/Stories
Or as I like to call them ‘unrequested headcanons’ - aka, headcanons I think about without having anyone ask me about them. There are still areas I would like to explore with Yasuo and its difficult to wait for the ‘correct question’. I will be looking after stories to enrich his background and tell more about him, but this will come later in time as I already have quite a lot on my plate as is.
Concerning Roleplay / What I seek for future threads
Steady roleplay partners - in short. People whose muses can connect with mine in a less superficial way. This does not stand for friendship/romance always - actually, Yasuo is better at making enemies than friends. This dynamic is something I have been missing dearly, I am not going to lie.
I understand the community has changed and its no longer the same I used to interact with years ago. Because of my recent outburst of ship art, I also believe a lot of you think I am only seeking ‘Dat Graves ™ ’ to ship with and that is not the case. I want to talk and interact with more people, but I have to do that carefully because each thread has a lot of effort placed into it. It’s not just about the pretty pictures - it’s about the portrayal and the writing aswell.
I certainly pretend to keep a decent share of memes, sillyness and other goods to keep a balance and prevent this blog from becoming stagnantly serious. I want to have a good laugh and to shitpost but Yasuo is a serious character. He has his moments but clearly they are not as frequent as desirable.
To wrap it up with style
I’m very pleased to announce soon I will be reaching a new follower count milestone and I will be hosting another giveaway event. This time I pretend to mix in what I did in the previous (doodles - but this time in character. Yes. Yasuo is probably going to doodle what you want, if RNG is kind to you) plus two or three free art pieces. Those are sepparate events and will take place at different dates that are yet to be scheduled.
Anyway, I might be missing something or two and I will be sure to reblog an edited version whenever they come to mind. For now, thats it. I appreciate the attention and apologies for the huge wall of text. If you have anything to ask/add/request please leave a comment!

Time’s Running Out: Alpha
Holy shit, here we are! The third story (I'm not counting the PWP snippet okay) in the BFF verse, and likely the grand finale! I'm really excited to get to share this with you guys, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do!
For those of you who are joining us for the first time... well, what you really need to know is this: York and Tex both survived Blood Gulch, are best friends forever, and Kai, Tucker, and Wash are all dating. And Alpha-Church is also still hanging around somewhere.
I keep coming back to the Chorus trilogy when I write it seems, so when I realized I was bringing this lot to Chorus, I knew I'd be seriously overhauling things. So. Be prepared. We've got four Freelancers here. Drastic measures are going to be taken. My apologies to Miles Luna.
Summary: The Reds and Blues; and their respective Freelancers, find themselves stranded on a strange planet named Chorus. Secrets, lies, and the unexpected seem to lie around every corner, and there might be even larger threats looming over the horizon.
They're possibly even less ready for Chorus than Chorus is for them.
Pairings: Lots of friendships, Suckington, Yorkalina, Chex, eventual Yorkimbalina, possible others.

It didn’t matter how many times he did this, York thought he’d never tire of space travel. There was something calming about the way the ship glided through space, about the humming of the engines, about the spiraling patterns the stars formed. He leaned against the large observation window, fingers tapping his thigh in a nervous pattern. The journey back to Valhalla was a long one, and the cramped nature of The Hand of Merope had started to get to him on day three of their trip.
He saw Carolina out of the corner of his eye and tensed for a moment before forcing himself to relax. It was fine, he reminded himself. Things were okay. Sort of.
Carolina stood next to him, saying nothing for a long moment before admitting defeat and speaking first. “We should… talk, shouldn’t we?”
York stared out at the stars for a moment. “Probably,” he admitted. He stopped leaning against the window and turned to face her.
“Who starts?” He asked her, trying to keep his tone light but failing. They’d kissed twice since finding each other again, but York didn’t pretend that it had fixed things.
He wished he could smoke on the ship. Maybe that would make his hands feel less like shaking.
York sat down on one of the couches nearby. Hesitantly, she sat across from him. They were both in their full armor, and York had to stop himself from reaching out to try to remove her helmet, from trying to just see her expressions, so he could get a better idea of what he was dealing with.
They remained in silence for long enough for Delta to start buzzing nervously.
York forced himself to speak first. “I’m sorry about the Director,” he said quietly.
Carolina looked away. “That’s not what I’m here to talk about,” she said tensely.
“Then talk,” he said. “I… Carolina... I don’t even know where to begin.”
“You picked her,” Carolina said harshly. “You sided with her.”
Of all the openings she had to pick, that was the one she went with? York closed his eyes, even though she couldn’t see what he was doing. “Yes.”
“Why?”
York shrugged. “She came to me. She had proof; proof of what the Director was doing. I couldn’t just… let it happen.”
She seemed prepared to say something so he plowed on. “You were still out, Carolina. And they were already talking about pulling Delta. Tex made her case. She made it, and I chose. Going to you wasn’t an option. We needed to leave if we were going to get anything done. If we were going to help anyone.”
“So that was why?” Carolina demanded. “You needed to ‘do the right thing?’”
York felt something rise in his chest but he shoved it aside. “I joined Freelancer to be a good guy,” he snapped. “We were supposed to help people. End the war! Experimental research, cutting edge technology, the best of the best, all in one place. That was the pitch, wasn’t it? But none of it was true. I couldn’t pretend anymore once Tex showed me Connie’s files. I couldn’t stay, not after that.”
Not even for you, he wanted to say. He didn’t. She had to know it was there. It had to be enough.
He pushed himself to his feet. “I need some air,” he said abruptly.
“York.” Her voice was warning.
“Hold it against me or don’t, Carolina,” he said quietly. “But it seemed like you made up your mind when you stayed away for years.”
Carolina looked away.
<York,> Delta said, disapproving as York strode towards the nearest hallway.
“I know Dee,” York sighed.
York shook his head. He needed nicotine; and Delta was being smug about the addiction too, because of course he was. How had this become his life?
“Found you,” Tex said, and York tried to pretend he hadn’t just jumped. Even without using her camouflage unit, Tex was still sneaky when she wanted to be.
“Hey Tex,” York said, grinning.
She knocked her shoulder against his. “Running again?”
“No!” He paused as she tilted her head, always able to tell when he was lying. The downside to being an awful liar, he supposed. “Okay, maybe a little.”
She huffed. “Do you two have to make everything complicated?” She asked, seeming curious.
“I’ll let you know when I figure it out,” York said, laughing slightly.
She shook her head. “Well, you’ll have lots of time to figure things out back at Valhalla, Private Harris.”
York couldn’t help but snicker at that. “Got to love Delta’s ability to fake paperwork, right?”
“I’m pretty sure it’s a reference I should hit you for,” she told him. The two of them kept walking, side by side, and York felt himself relax in her presence. Tex would hate for him to ever tell her that, but she was a comforting person to be around, in her own way.
“Probably. Remind me to get Lopez to cue up some of those old earth shows when we get back. I bet you’ll like it.”
“We’ll see,” Tex said. There was a pause, before she added a quiet, “Sorry I broke your helmet.”
“Eh,” York tapped his fist against the cracked surface of his visor. “I’ll get a new one soon, probably.” He nudged her. “It’s fine. Much better than the last time you cracked my visor, right?”
“Oh, shut up.”
“Look I’m just saying, you could have taken my other eye, and you didn’t, so I’m grateful.”
Tex looked like she was considering saying something else, so York drew to a halt. “Look. Tex. It’s fine. No harm done.”
There was a long pause, but then Tex shook her head at him. “Grif’s right, isn’t he?”
“About what? I understand Grif to be right about most things.”
“You really are a masochist.”
York laughed. “Tex, we’ve been friends for how long?”
Tex paused, taking his question seriously. “Not sure.”
York wasn’t sure either; he’d be hard pressed to find a hard starting point; a single moment when he’d looked at Tex and thought of her as a friend. They hadn’t started there, sure. But they’d made it. And now, York honestly wasn’t sure if he could imagine his life without his prickly, awkward, brilliant best friend.
“Years!” York said. “Years, and you’ve only just figured that part out?”
Tex shoved him lightly. “You’re a pain in my ass, York.”
“And you wouldn’t have it any other way,” York said, nudging her back, harder this time.
Tex sighed. “I need to find Church. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye,” York said absently, before starting to continue his exploration of the ship.
He hadn’t been on his own for more than five minutes when he felt the ship shudder and the lights began to flash.
“Okay,” he told Delta. “This time, I swear it’s not our fault.”
<I believe that can be assumed, York.>
Tucker loved that he was getting used to this; waking up between the two of them. He could feel Wash’s heartbeat under his fingertips, and Kai’s hands were wrapped tightly around his waist, keeping him pressed up against the soft curves of her body.
No matter how many times it happened, it was still incredible. The bunk the three of them were sharing was small so that Kai was pressed against the wall and Wash was sometimes on the verge of nearly falling off the bed, but they made it work. And they’d be back to Valhalla soon enough; and Tucker’s head was filled with plans for how to renovate the room they all shared, so they’d have enough room. Not too much room though; Wash slept best when they were all close. No need to mess with a formula that worked.
“Morning,” Wash muttered sleepily.
“Mmm,” was Kai’s contribution. Both of them laughed slightly at that. Wash rolled onto his other side so he could press his forehead against Tucker’s.
“Almost home,” Wash said softly, pressing his lips all-to-briefly against Tucker’s.
“We’re war heroes now,” Tucker grinned, propping himself up as best he could manage without knocking Kai off. “That mean we don’t have to do leg day?”
Wash laughed, and Tucker grinned, savoring the sound, still all-too-rare. “Nope.”
Tucker pouted, but Wash paid no attention to that, instead just brushing Tucker’s hair out of his face, smiling dopily. If Tucker occasionally struggled to believe his luck, Wash almost never believed it. Weeks later and he was still like this, savoring every single touch, every moment, as if he believed it would be snatched away in an instant.
Kai sighed, finally sitting up to wipe at her eyes. “What time is it?”
“Late,” Wash smiled.
“Your-late or my-late?” Kai groused, but she leaned up to peck at Tucker’s cheek. Tucker turned and kissed her properly, tugging her into his lap so that she’d be able to kiss Wash as well once they were done. Sure enough, the second Kai pulled away she reeled Wash in by the straps of the tank top he’d worn to bed, and Tucker laughed as Wash somehow managed to be surprised.
“Come on,” Tucker said, once the two of them were done, because Kai was starting to get that look in her eye that meant “morning sex”, which, although Tucker would normally be all for, he was starving and needed food first. “Let’s go get food.”
“Mmm,” Kai was still eying Wash like she was planning on eating him, so Tucker had to change tactics.
“And coffee?” He added innocently, and there, he had both of their attentions. Their joint addiction to coffee was freaking hilarious.
“Fine,” Kai grumbled, moving off his lap to search for her bra. “But you’re boring.”
“We could always bring the food back—”
“You are not putting maple syrup on my abs,” Wash said blandly, having heard this pitch at least three times by now. “Put on your armor,” he told them. “You know regulations.”
Kai and Tucker both sighed, but grabbed their armor—apparently ships had strict rules about that, due to risks of decompression. They were just starting to head towards the mess hall when the lights started to flash and sirens started to shriek, worse than Donut when Sarge declared a Red Panic.
“I know my ping pong ball trick can move the earth,” Kai yelled, “but this is a seriously delayed reaction!”
“Wait. What?” Wash yelled.
“Well that went fucking horribly,” Epsilon said, hovering over her shoulder.
“Could have been worse,” Carolina said, staring after York. He was different now, so, so different, and she didn’t know how to handle that. She suspected he was the same about her. There was a… heaviness to him she’d never seen before.
There had been a time when being by his side had felt natural, felt normal. They’d fought back-to-back, bantering back and forth, a rare bright spot in the midst of everything else in the world.
But that was gone now. They’d both done their parts to scuttle it, ripping themselves apart just as surely as the Director had. Him by leaving, her by staying away. Carolina was never felt more keenly aware of how long it had actually been since Freelancer had fallen apart than when she looked at York and saw how much he’d changed.
Epsilon nudged her thoughts, trying to pull her out of her gloom, but she ignored him, getting to her feet and moving further down the hallway. It was odd, having another AI in her mind after Eta and Iota. Epsilon was different than them; his presence was steadier, fuller than the other two, who had been buzzing, infrequent, whispering in tandem or in contradictions, sometimes overwhelming her, other times helping her to hit new heights she’d never have been able to hit. It was odd; Epsilon was the last of the fragments, by all rights he shouldn’t be so real, so full, but he managed.
She let her eyes flicker to the side, irritated as she realized he’d succeeded in distracting her. He sent a vague wave of amusement at her, his avatar vanished from view as they moved into the general population of the ship.
<Why’s he so obsessed with being a good guy?> Epsilon demanded. He’d been waiting to ask for a while, she thought, amused. <It’s… really freaking weird.>
Carolina raised one shoulder in a shrug. “He’s always been that way.” Epsilon nudged her mind, asking for permission, and she did the mental equivalent of pushing open a door, letting him explore her memories of “before”. He sorted through them efficiently like he always did, processing things too quickly for her to even notice.
<Still weird,> Epsilon declared when he finished. <You don’t obsess with that stuff.> There was a long pause. <Do you?>
And what a reminder that was, how fresh this partnership was. There was still so much to learn about each other. Had it really only been a few weeks? Carolina drew to a halt, staring out the window as she tried to formulate her thoughts. She frowned, noticing they were drawing close to a planet, but it didn’t look like their destination. “After what I did? What we did?” Carolina shook her head. “Epsilon, I’m not sure if we can ever get all the way back to good. But, I think that we have a chance to do better. And if we wake up everyday and try to make things better, eventually, we might find that better is good enough.”
Epsilon appeared by her side, hovering just over her shoulder, and something stirred inside Carolina that told her that it was right.
“Good enough, huh?” Epsilon mused. “Guess that sounds alright.”
Carolina smiled.
“That was a good little speech there,” he said. “What, did you rehearse it?”
Carolina waved a hand through his projection, a small laugh building in her throat. He snickered, jumping to her other shoulder.
“Look, I’m just saying, I’m pretty sure these things run in the family,” he said, and Carolina felt as if a bolt of electricity had jolted right through her, because…
Carolina threw her hand out wide as the ship suddenly gave a lurch, nearly throwing her off balance. “Epsilon! What’s happening?”
“I—Cee!” Epsilon reappeared in front of her face. “We’ve got to find the guys! The ships crashing!”
Carolina took off at a run, Epsilon throwing the speed boost into full gear, leaving the question of family behind for another day.
The sight of ships crashing was unfortunately common on Chorus, these days. Whatever weapon it was that the Federal Army was using to bring them down was effective. It was incredibly unusual that Kimball would even notice it, but she was outside that day, working with a group of more promising cadets when she saw it.
It wasn’t like most crashes; they happened far away from the Rebel base, far enough away that Kimball wouldn’t know they happened until Felix came back with a few containers of supplies and another grim report of no survivors.
But this time there was a nova in the sky; and Kimball saw everyone’s attention go up as pieces began to fall. Ragged parts of a ship; a big one too.
“Shit,” she breathed.
“That’s new!” Felix said, also staring. “Think the Feds have a new toy?”
Kimball shivered at the idea of them having something that could do that. “God, I hope not,” she said softly. A large piece, still smoking landed nearby. Kimball moved forward to examine it, wondering if she’d be able to tell what had caused the explosion. She kneeled down to examine it, finding nothing particularly distinct, but then again, she didn’t know much about ships. “Do you have time to take a squad and find the crash site?” She asked, glancing up at Felix, who was still standing, helmet turned towards the sky.
“No problem Kimball,” he said lightly. “I’m sure I’ll be back soon. I’ll let you know if I find anything useful!”
Kimball nodded, and ordered her people to gather the fallen pieces. No need to waste perfectly good scrap metal.
She looked at the sky again, and pushed away any thoughts of survivors. There wouldn’t be any. Not from a crash like that.

7. Parents - Corval - mother.
Really, the way I see the Lady Parastu is pretty faithful to what information exists about the Courtier’s Mom in the game—with the exception that she has two daughters, who attend the same Summit and will eventually require a Canon Overhaul, which is trademark for my girls at this point, let’s face it. So Roshni and Naz’s mom is the very model of a Cunning Corvali Courtier, and has been friends with the Empress since before she even was Empress. And despite the fact that most of Parastu’s life has been decided by “the whims of the Empress”, like her marriage and her children, I think the friendship between the two women is genuine? Like, there’s a consensus that regardless of however many secrets they’re keeping from each other—spoiler: A Lot, It’s Corval—they’re never gonna outright betray each other. So maybe Parastu’s a little more faithful than the Empress is, and the power dynamic is a little skewed, but they’ve known each other for over thirty years. If the relationship didn’t work, they wouldn’t have remained friends this long.
(The Empress calls her “Stu”, which is great. What is also great is the time another lady new to the inner circle tried to call her Stu as well, cue that lady leaving the Imperial City in disgrace within the month.)
The El-Amin girls absolutely adore their mother, which is only heightened by the fact their dad died when Shahnaz was ten/Roshanara was five, and he was never a huge part of their lives up to that point anyway, since they spent most of their time in the inner court. Parastu, in turn, loves her daughters, and put a lot of effort into getting them to break the Corvali stereotype of Not Trusting Your Family Members. A lot of effort, considering the girls were brats to each other for most of their childhoods. So they’re a remarkably close-knit family unit for the inner court, which was a deciding factor for sending both sisters to the Summit to represent Corval, and while Rosh and Naz are good good Moral/Noble/Compassionate girls, there is very little they wouldn’t do for their mom. Nor she for them.
9. Parents - Hise - Blackthorn.
I love Blackthorn so much, okay, I’m an absolute sucker for fictional video game families and the Hisean MC’s personal plot is my favourite of the bunch. Since we don’t get a lot of information on Blackthorn beyond her Current Situation I haven’t deviated too drastically from the text, I don’t think. But so Sadja’s mother, specifically, is Captain Lujayn Blackthorn. Lujayn is Hisean herself, born and bred, and both of her parents were pirates, though their approach to piracy was definitely more bloodthirsty/immoral than their daughter’s (and by extension granddaughter’s). She mostly spent her childhood alternating between her parents’ ships, since both Rachim Stormdancer and Araceli the Sea Wraith refused to give up their captaincies after their marriage. Tragedy struck when Lujayn was about thirteen, as both of her parents died within months of each other: I haven’t specifically decided what caused her dad’s death, but I do know he died first, and then her mom basically ramped up the “terror of the seas” angle in her grief until she was killed in battle.
So that left an impression on Lu, which. Is an understatement, absolutely, but it’s the main reason why she only kills as a last resort, since maybe her parents would have lived longer if they hadn’t approached everything with blades drawn, maybe murder isn’t always the answer, what a Novel Concept. It was also an unconscious influence on her marriage, since even before she met Ozias she’d think about how it would be nice, wouldn’t it, to have someone to come back home to. Whereas if she married a fellow pirate, a fellow captain, then there wouldn’t be anything anchoring her to land.
I’m still fleshing out Lujayn’s backstory, particularly how she survived her teenaged years, and of course The Kidnapping Of Wellindad, but what doesn’t need fleshing out is that Sadja loves her mother so damn much. The current timeline I’m working with is that Lujayn vanished four years ago, so that’s been four years of Sadja struggling with depression and trying to come to terms with her grief, only to come to the Summit and learn her mother lives, Blackthorn Lives, and she would do anything to get Lujayn back. Which is honestly the most canon-compliant aspect of Sadja, how much she loves her mom.
(Daughters Loving The Shit Out Of Their Moms is another theme for me, clearly, but as a daughter who loves the shit out of her own mom, I stand by it.)
10. Parents - Hise - Wellindad.
hey that’s me
My love for Blackthorn is matched only by my love for Wellindad, frankly—again, the Hisean MC’s whole situation? So good. Sadja’s dad/Lujayn’s husband is none other than Ozias Tendaji. Who started out pretty canon compliant, much like his wife, before I had the thought “what if Ozias was a former delegate?” And then Aly mentioned in an ask that he was a younger son who wouldn’t have inherited anything in Wellin, which I then interpreted as “what if Ozias’s family is Important In Wellin, he just had a lot of siblings?”
So now Ozias is the youngest son and the fourth born child of the former Duke of Chanly, Josiah Tendaji, and his wife, the Dowager Duchess Sabine Wiegand. His eldest brother Gideon is the current Duke of Chanly, after their dad died twelve years ago, and his middlest brother Erez is Count of Barzin (which is located within the duchy of Chanly, making Gideon his direct liege lord, if I remember my Crusader Kings II mechanics currectly). One of his sisters, Liora, married a Marquis, and they have a pleasant, childless marriage; the other, Ismene, married a Count, but died unexpectedly nearly twenty years ago, leaving her heartbroken husband to raise their daughter alone.
Since he was their third son, Josiah and Sabine didn’t quite know what to do with Ozias politically until they realized the Seven Year Summit might be a good fit for their soft spoken boy, so he was a member of the Wellish delegation four summits prior to the one his daughter is currently attending. To his disappointment, Ozias didn’t make a match, romantic or otherwise, but he did participate in the negotiations, so overall it was a good experience. So he returned home to Wellin, only to be kidnapped by an upstart pirate a few weeks later.
(He insisted on bringing his dogs with him.)
If Sadja inherited the call of the wind from her mother, she absolutely inherited her enormous heart from her father, since all Ozias wants to do his love his family the best he can. Even after almost thirty years he’s yet to find a True Place in Hise beyond being “Blackthorn’s Husband” but honestly, he wouldn’t want to have any other role? And he can’t imagine going back to Wellin, since this is where he made his life with Lujayn, this is where they raised their daughter, and honestly, I love Wellindad so fucking much, there is a reason he is my url, okay, and it’s because I love him.
And Sadja loves him, too, yes I know this is basically the answer to all of these questions “my girls love their parents, thanks for asking” but it’s the truth
25. Ancestors
OKAY, so you did clarify you wanted to hear about House Tendaji, and I did already cover the Current Family Situation when I was talking about Ozias, and honestly? I haven’t fleshed out much about the family beyond that, like. They’ve been in Wellin since before the fall of the Revairan Empire, although they haven’t been nobility that long. And they weren’t always known as the Tendajis, either—it’s sort of like the Plantagenets, where that’s what we refer to them as now, but it wasn’t until the house was in its death throes that anyone ever used the surname? House Tendaji is thriving, though, they’re doing good in the present day.
Anyway, I do know that they’re called the Tendajis now because Tendaji was the name of the ancestor who first ascended to the Wellish nobility, which (without a more detailed timeline) was definitely after the Revairan Empire fell/before Katiya came up with the Summit. And I’ll honestly probably hold off on figuring out an Exact Instant for Tendaji to have gained his title until after Kingmaker comes out so that’ll be about five more years lmao whoops but an idea I am toying with is that perhaps he was rewarded after fighting against the Revairans, since I recently discovered the Countess-specific text during Jarrod’s date where she talks about how Wellin and Revaire have always had a terse relationship.
And…that’s about all I have for ancestors, whoops, sorry your family tree is full of placeholders, Sadja and Matilda.

My Hero Academia Chapter 239 Review
youtube
If the definition of “mixed bag” needs a photo, this chapter would do it justice. From what I assumed is the end of the arc, the battle of two villains have reached to the conclusion; one in which challenged Game of Thrones Season 8 pacing. By that, I mean, “What a rush;” literally. While the future content could be interesting, the execution here was underwhelming, unearned, and possibly damaging.
I assumed this chapter is the end of the arc with the inclusion of Spinner as the narrator. It began with him narrating, so ending it seems fitting. Jumping ahead, he wasn’t much of a character here, which is a shame, considering his background can be relatable. I mean it has some elements, but he’s cool being a lackey, so problem solved. Couldn’t even get a fight of his own, let alone a victory. Oh well; it’s time for the showcase of Shigaraki’s earth shattering attack.
The way how it setup leave me an impression that everyone in Meta Liberation Army will be wiped out. As sad that may sound, let alone ridiculousness on the power level, I’m ready to accept it. Who knows. It could have a cool sendoff. Honestly, I vision in my head how this would end well for the team; maintaining their pride and die with their fellow leader. If you are unfamiliar with one of the major cons of Game of Thrones Season 8, this chapter would be a great example.
Once Shigaraki does the attack, as expected, it can destroy a city. It may not be the entire landscape, but it’s good enough to intimidate anyone. Plus, large destruction equal powerful is the concept this series follows, so welcome to Shounen. The visual is pretty cool though, largely on the emphasis of Shigaraki’s joy of destruction. Redestro tries to dodge it, but soon overwhelmed to the point you would think he has died. Instead, he has lost his legs since it was touched earlier. That could leave room for sinister end for him. Remember, villain versus villain concept can allow killing in a dark, cruel way, like how Toga did it to Curious. This could make Shigaraki scary as a person and how would he make an example out of anyone who dares to start a feud.
If only…
Instead, Redestro surrenders to Shigaraki. Okay, that would have been partially fine, though he comes off as a wimp and not as prideful as he started off in the very beginning. Sort of betraying a character in a way. But, it doesn’t end there. Not only he surrenders, but he gives his army to the League of Villains. Why? Because he has been enlightened by Shigaraki’s desire for destruction. He has shown great example of Destro’s ambition; the one who embody freedom itself. But, you started a war based on it, and because you saw a clear picture, you instantly become someone’s tool? Oh, Gigantomachia and Spinner are practically convinced by Shigaraki’s prowess; thus, he and the League have gained tremendous power. All because Deku have to get a power that will make the Sage of Six Paths proud.
Let’s start with the positive. The League of Villains have gained crap load of arsenals in a matter of a day. They went from zero to well, not zero. They have the lab with multiple High-Ends, Gigantomachia, special bullets to damage quirks, an army, and money. Not to mention, they are powered-up. More importantly, they are seen as a threat, so for the future content, it could lead to interesting possibilities. If anything, it’s the idea of what lies ahead that helped this chapter more so than the content itself. It’s good to theorize, but when look at the execution, it’s pretty poor.
First of all, the rebound for the League is unbelievable. They became a major threat at a rapid rate, only because some of the heroes, largely on Deku, will soon become overpowered themselves. This wouldn’t happen if the balance was justified, but instead it falls under the same problem as Naruto. There, the protagonist had grown powerful, so it’s logical for the antagonist to grow even more so within an arc. Hell, one was done multiple times within an arc like some bargain sales.
Second, Redestro practically became something that rhymes with ditch in a matter of a battle. Where did it indicate he wanted to be free as if to say, “He is suffering long enough with Destro’s ideal that he wants someone to take over.” When all things considered, he pulled the “coolest guy ever,” only for the villain’s side. What happened to that prideful self; an image that wouldn’t be converted drastically. He was seriously hell bent on his pride, but now, bow down because of reasons? I felt more sympathetic or attached to a villain from another series who I don’t think ever given a name yet struck me with feels.
Look, it could have worked, but it was incredibly rushed; much similar to that character who turned evil from Game of Thrones. More exploration and time would help a lot. Even if he gets a flashback down the road, the image didn’t support the cause, so it felt like a revision was done. Kind of like how Overhaul doesn’t show much of germ phobic. Hell, he probably get talk no jutsu again, but this time by Deku. On the plus side, at least we will get more of him later. Bonus, the army is no longer fodders for the villain; now, they’re fodders for the hero. What an honor.
My main pet peeve is how it essentially made the arc underwhelming and in hindsight, needlessly dragged on. This could have been done within a volume; hell, the one that is out right now in Japan. I know we have gotten backstories and developments of some, but in terms of battle, it did nothing but stretch time for this type of conclusion. It’s even funnier to realize how Curious is the only named casualty and defeat out of everyone. I guess we can’t have two female within the League. Kishimoto will be so proud.
It’s sad though, because this arc should have been “different.” It involved with two villains that have nothing to shy away from going ultra-violent. It started off promising with Toga’s victory. After that, it’s the same old stuff with some limbs loss. Yeah, I know we have people dying, but in a dusty way. You can lie to your kids and say, “They went to the next dimension.” And the fans said this was very dark. Shigaraki’s backstory, sure, but what backstory isn’t dark in any series these days.
Perhaps the chapter can be seen as bad or even damaging to the arc itself. It’s the potentials for future content that would leave a better impression. The visual is pretty good, but the rest is questionable. One would ask, “But wouldn’t you complain still if Redestro was killed instead?” The answer is, it’s always been a double-edge sword, and both are sharp. I don’t know if Kohei was told to rush this arc, but this should have been much better. I don’t know if the arc ends here, but I’m ready to go back to the hero’s side. Probably…

The Flaws of the Criminal Justice System—A Law Student Perspective as a Hopeful Aspiring Criminal Lawyer
This blawg entry is written by a second year Law Student at Robson Hall—reflecting on the inherent issues surrounding the Criminal Justice System, as well as contemplating what does soon graduating from law school look like for individuals who are interested in Criminal Law?
The purpose of addressing such problems is to reflect on some reoccurring themes I have struggled with throughout my education and feel that will continue to be ongoing issues as students soon become lawyers. First, I will address the much needed remodeling that is necessary of the Criminal Justice System. This is discussed to question whether the option of diverting matters to alternative measures is the correct method to affect change. Second I will discuss, the current issue of trial delays relating to section 11(b) of the Charter. Third, I will discuss the embedded and permeating problem of Indigenous individuals overrepresentation in incarceration in the Criminal Justice System.
The Criminal Justice System is undergoing a much needed overhaul in relation to delays in criminal trials, as well as attempting to implement more programming that essentially would divert more criminal charges.i The proposed solution of diverting more charges at first blush seems like an excellent decision, especially when framed as “this is about creating safer communities, it’s about creating better access to justice”. ii Access to justice has been a hot button phrase in Canadian legal circles. When the news centers their focus around creating better access, the view to Canadians is that a solution is on the horizon.
In reality, regarding matters that are diverted, one can question whether the individual should have been charged in the first place.
One avenue to question in this regard is Zero Tolerance Policies for domestic violence assaults. Zero Tolerance policies can result in both the abuser and the victim being charged when police are called about domestic violence. This in essence leads to a re-victimization of the victim, who now may have to go through criminal proceedings. Although the view of diverting matters to programming causes both society and law students alike to question “well who would not benefit from a bit of counselling”iii, should the individuals have been charged in the first place? If the Crown allows the matter to be diverted, if the client agrees to programming or if they can afford to pay for some expensive programming and complete said programming, the result is that the charge is dropped. A common occurence is when Diversion Letters are out while a matter is in Pre Trial Court, without the client even having an understanding of the process nor having the financial funds to pay for the program. Law students , nonetheless, also cite diversion as “the best possible outcome for individuals because with sending a matter to trial there is no guaranteed result”.iv
Principally, I will agree that diversion programming offers an opportunity to clients that provides good results, if completed. What I again question, is whether charges should have been laid in the first place. Another issue, not discussed in the media, is what is the cost of aforementioned programming?
What also needs to be discussed is the difficulty of obtaining employment, even with a stayed charge. Employers often ask potential employees the question “have you ever been convicted of a crime” as well as “have you ever been charged of a crime”. In situations where domestic violence charges have been diverted, individuals are left with the choice of lying on employment applications, or with the probability of being rejected for employment opportunities. The Manitoba Prosecutions for the Provincial Crown does have a Specialized Unit that processes domestic violence claims. But is that enough? Some Canadian cities have specialized domestic courts.v In areas which have specialized courts for domestic violence, these courts recognize that without such an integrated mechanism families are left with some of their matters in the criminal justice system, while their other matters are in the family justice process.vi Without an amalgamated system, families are left with significant financial strain from two different types of court proceedings, and there often exists duplicated decisions vii. As a law student, I echo fellow students who suggest diversion as the best possible outcome, but I also question what that means for clients. Clients who are not equipped with legal assistance to help them with their family law matters and clients who are not sure about their future employment in such a situation will be affected.
Critics such as Martin Friedland while reflecting on Criminal Justice Reform in Canada historically find the system to be just as “ineffective, inequitable, and inconsistent” when compared with the past 50 years of progress.viii Friedland mentions numerous causes for such problems as: large numbers of individuals being held in custody pending their trial; police opting out of their ability to allow for release; while justices of the peace’s require strict guidelines such as sureties.ix The last critique Friedland lists is being that of the rising number of reverse-onus provisions that the Criminal Code now places on individuals in regards to release.x At the end of the day, the Criminal Justice System changes at a glacial pace, leaving those charged often in limbo. As a form of electoral campaigning politicians suggest new solutions to change the system, meanwhile it is debatable whether the newest diversion focused lens is the answer.
Clearly, the Criminal Justice System in Canada is flawed. What is more troubling is the recent decision of R v Jordan. There is no real debate to be had, section 11(b) of the Charter outlines that “any person charged with an offence has the right to be tried within a reasonable time”. The heart of the issue becomes the arbitrary “presumptive ceiling” created from Jordan in which there is a pre-determined length of time for a criminal court matter to take. As somewhat of an activist, I stand behind the Charter along with the decisions set out in both Jordan and Cody.xiii There should be a maximum fictitious limit that criminal matters are heard within, again with reference to section 11(b) of the Charter.
The issue I take with the presumptive ceiling is the effect that it is having on the justice system as a whole. There is a saying, maybe, that any change is good change. Truthfully, the cases of Jordan and Cody are the the state responding to delays by implementing ideas such as more diversion, without mention of where the financial assistance is coming from to run such programs. Our system requires more. The Criminal Code of Canada is modified continuously, but there has been no true restructuring of the Code in a long time.
Interestingly enough, the Federal Government of Canada recently tabled new legislation that is thought to address the issues of delays. The bill recently introduced proposed to amend the Criminal Code in the following ways:
“(1) get rid of peremptory challenges of jurors and change the way juries are selected; (2) increase the maximum sentences for repeat domestic abusers;
(3) restrict the use of preliminary inquires to serious offences;
(4) change the way to handle offences such as failing to appear or breaching release conditions; and
(5) remove parts of the Code that have been found unconstitutional.”xiv
Carissima Mathen, a University of Ottawa law professor commented that “the bill could tackle the issue of judicial delays…but the federal government doesn’t have control over the criminal justice system since it’s administered by the provinces”.xv Bill C-75 sounds promising, but the inherent issue of division of powers, and true implementation of such drastic changes are yet to be known. Undoubtedly, Jordan is having an effect on the Federal Government, not just individual provinces. CTV’s article on Bill C-75 later highlights cases in which unreasonable delays have let off individuals charged of first-degree murder or child abusers. What is left unstated in the media remains the Charter rights of those individuals accused of crimes, nor is there any mention of the presumption of innocence or how such delays impacted the individuals charged.
What else is left unsaid in the media, by lawyers, or individuals accused of crimes? Two things come to mind, first is Indigenous Overrepresentation in the justice system. R v Gladue xvi was decided in 1999 while R v Ipeelee xvii is more recently decided in 2012. Yet, statistics show that Indigenous Overrepresentation continues to rise, instead of decrease. Carolina Repila quoted statistics from the Public Safety Canada Portfolio Corrections Statistics Committed that “offenders who are Canadian Aboriginals, as opposed to non-Aboriginal Canadians, tend to get into the legal system at a younger age, stay in prison longer, and are placed in medium or high security jails”.xviii In the Criminal Code section 718.2(e) specifically states that Aboriginal offenders should be given all other reasonable sentences, instead of incarceration.xix Again, promising legislation, or government action taken to appear as though change occurred. Yet Indigenous overrepresentation in incarceration continues to be a ubiquitous Canadian problem.
Second, tied into the problem of Indigenous overrepresentation is the utilization of guilty pleas. Carolina Repila mentions that Indigenous individuals are also more likely to plead guilty to crimes, whether they committed them or not.xx Repila referenced the Report of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba, xxi which recognized reasons such as the inability to afford bail, the risk of losing their jobs, homes and children’s custody as explanations why Indigenous individuals often take the early plea deal. Are Indigenous individuals taking early plea deals because legal aid funding is so scarce that they are not even eligible to be funded? The financial maximum for qualifying for a criminal matter in Manitoba in a family unit of one size is $23,000.xxii The maximum slowly increases with family size, but ultimately only exists for individuals in extreme poverty.
Criminal law and justice has transformed over the years with substantial societal perspectives being at the forefront of change. But there still exists deep-seeded perceptions of individuals interested in Criminal Law. As a law student, I try to learn as much as I can, but I know there is still a lot to learn. I enjoy having discussions surrounding the law as well as hearing other people’s divergent perspectives. What troubles me about to be criminal lawyer/law students perceptions is the ideals that people become so invested in one position. They do not take the time to learn both perspectives, even though as a law student we are encouraged to put ourselves in the other persons shoes, thinking of an ‘in the alternative answer’.
One example that comes to mind is individuals who are interested in Criminal Law but only want to work for the Crown Prosecutors. I tend to air on the side of caution of thinking so definitively, but their reasoning often rests upon not wanting to represent ‘criminals’. To this day I still fear for those people, especially since some of them will likely become Crown Prosecutors. This fear is not unfounded, when people go into a profession with these negative connotations about the ‘accused’, I think the idea of justice goes out the window. The ingrained issues with the justice system will undoubtedly be missed or ignored when people do not turn their minds to other standpoints. Thus, the fear I have rests upon the fact that those individuals will not seek change, they will not advocate for the public interest but embody something different.
One further illustration rests upon a contentious article written by Bruce Pardy. I am not taking a position on his article or writing style as a whole but only suggest the reality of one statement “inside today’s law schools, expressing dissent on politically correct initiatives can earn you scorn and contempt”.xxiv I reference Pardy only to highlight the point that we as law students should be able to hold opposing views to engage in a dialogue of varying perspective without such scorn and contempt.
To end on a positive note, I wanted to reflect on the multitude of inherent problems with the justice system as a law student interested in criminal law, because I think it is important to recognize the flaws. While at the same time, not losing sight of what has to change within our system. Often individuals enter law school with the perception that they will change things, but the reality of student loans, life responsibilities and the substance of finding articling or job prospects afterwards changes people. Those who initially wanted to advocate for injustices often become jaded by criminal law, and the ability for people to actually affect change. Individuals in the justice system often rely on legal aid certificates or minimal means. Who has the time or money to see justice go to the Courts of Appeal, never mind the Supreme Court?
I briefly cited fundamental issues of the justice system, because I do not want to be one of those individual’s that loses sight of the bigger picture. Law reform although promised to Canadians, is not likely to happen any time soon. The truth of the matter is that the solutions offered both by the Federal and Provincial governments often are band-aid solutions that do not resonate or stick.
In the real world though, with a specific focus on the Canadian’s justice system, something has got to give. More change than suggested, is required. As a student interested in Criminal Law, I cannot lose sight of the advocate I want to become.
