A.J Pollard’s biography on Edward IV was so cringe lol (generic; minor but frustrating inaccuracies; intensely judgmental at times and oddly dismissive at others while never considering the broader context; entirely diminished and trivialized Elizabeth Woodville as both queen and wife of his main subject in the name of "defending" her; created a false dichotomy between Edward and Henry VII’s styles of ruling and lauded the latter at the former’s expense even though Henry literally followed Edward’s example for the very things Pollard was criticizing Edward for; had a downright nonsensical and thoroughly misleading conclusion about Edward’s legacy & Richard’s usurpation that was based entirely on hindsight, Pollard's own assumptions, and the complete downplaying Richard’s agency and actions to emphasize what Pollard wrongly and misleadingly claimed were Edward's so-called 'failings', etc, etc)

I wanted to buy his book on Henry V but after reading this shitshow and the synopsis of that book, im guessing it's going to be 10x worse, so...no thanks

#history media #this was written months ago im posting it to get it out of my drafts #it wasn't necessarily BAD. it was generic and readable. but it was very disappointing and misleading and its conclusion was just nonsense #listen I have no patience for the dumbfuck idea that edward somehow had the ultimate responsibility for his own son's deposition because #of his 'policies' during his reign. like I said it's based fully on hindsight and entirely devoid of actual context. it's bafflingly stupid #literally everyone expected Edward V to succeed his father and 'both hoped for and expected' (Croyland's own words) a successful reign #Edward V's deposition was richard and solely Richard's fault lol this should not be difficult to understand #the reason Richard's usurpation was possible in the first place was bcause everyone expected E5 to succeed and didn't expect Richard #do to what he did. nothing would have happened without his initiative and decisions. it had nothing to do with Edward's 'policies'#Edward's policies were fine. henry vii - who pollard vaunts to no end - literally *followed* them #and claiming that he failed to unite England under the Yorkist dynasty is just plain stupid #buddy if he truly failed at that then neither Richard III nor Henry VII would have thrones lol. both emphasized continuity with #him when aiming for the throne. like the whole point of 1483-85 was that it was a conflict WITHIN the 'Yorkist' dynasty #it was not an external threat against it.#'his legacy failed' his legacy didn't fail his brother destroyed it (while also presenting himself as his heir because logic what's logic?)#henry's victory was very much the triumph of his legacy (a claimant chosen by his supporters as the husband of his daughter)#like this is really not my interpretation it is literally what happened #i'm not trying to glorify e4 but his son did inherit the throne in a more advantageous circumstances than any other minor king of england #and frankly than most other adult kings. dumping blame on Edward's literal corpse rather than acknowledge Richard's agency is so tasteless #the problem isn't that edward made a mistake in trusting his brother. many other kings including Henry V also trusted theirs.#the problem is that his brother was willing to break that trust in a way that was unprecedented and broke all political norms of that age #ie: Richard's usurpation occurred because of Richard who re-ignited conflict to make himself king. please drill this into your head #also btw this illogical 'interpretation' is based entirely on Charles Ross' hatred and derision towards Elizabeth Woodville and her family #if you agree with this inteterpretation you agree with his vilification of them 🤷🏻‍♀️#anyway if you want a better interpretation that's actually analytical and looks a relevant rather than a flawed retrospective perspective #i would recommend rosemary horrox's 'richard iii: a study of service' and david horspool's 'richard iii: a ruler and his reputation'#anyway one last time: STOP downplaying Richard's agency and actions. historians who do this are stupid and embarrassing. bye.#(i should really post horspool's glorious takedown of ross and Pollard huh? it was very entertaining to read)

The worst part about writing long aus is that you can’t infodump about it (without having to explain everything first so they get the context) unless you’re willing to make someone read 150k words

#yes this is about mirrorverse (120k plus stuff not on ao3)#also about hsau (70k but 40k of that is double counted w mirrorverse) and superhero au (21k) to a lesser extent #I try not to beg for readers and usually don’t get any response when I self promote the long ones #so I keep trying to summarize more and more succinctly #keep having summaries of all the previous things #and write so that you can pick up most of the plot jumping into the present moment with just the bare minimum premise #which makes me feel better about it but also. still.#kvetch #(patience/mirrorverse 3 is on the top page of murderbot fics by wordcount and has single digit numbers of kudos and comments)#(compared to the next lowest having double digits for both and all the others having at least one triple digit metric)#(I try really hard to not care but when I want to infodump it’s really hard to find someone who doesn’t need me to explain the context firs #and that makes me sad cause I want to just launch into the problem I’m having w/o explaining it all and curbing my enthusiasm)#please do not tell me “you can infodump without explaining” I don’t want to hear it

What is the point of "family" by the way. I don't really get it

#I mean good for everyone who does but #Like even after developing a pretty okay relationship with my mother I kind of don't.....#I don't know how to put this without sounding really abrasive #I /like/ her for sure as like. An entity right. Who takes care of me? And she's Fine overall I guess but I just don't think I'm feeling the #right way about what is supposed to be my 'mother'. Right. Like I think other people are doing that differently and feel a way I'm not #capable of feeling. Like I just don't have the capacity to emotionally understand a familial bond in that context??#I think it's just my dissociative disorder to be honest. I don't really have a childhood or a consecutive life experience of any kind and #I've definitely felt Familial Bond about fictional characters my brain has decided to get into an uncomfortable position relative to on an #emotional level. Iykyk. [Stares off into the middle distance]#But like on a real level I don't really care I guess about a lot of the people around me and I don't understand how to. I had to actively #decide or puzzle out how to 'properly' engage with a lot of things including emotions on a 'human' level.#Like I had to sit there and make the Choice actively to care about people and humanity which I think most people don't have to do #And not in like a 'humanity has disappointed me and I have to get over a misanthropic phase' I mean like. #aarrggh it's not like I haven't tried/liked any since lockdown started. I enjoyed watt lihn and rtc.#and it's only sort of that I don't know what's up in the current/recent theater scene #I could simply look up what's on and what cast albums have come out lately and pick something #and there have been plenty of cast changes and new productions for stuff I already like!#honestly I think the thing stopping me from getting back into musicals is that I've had a few computer changes since 2020 #and lost most of my bootleg collection so I don't really have ways to get new recordings of things I want #and I gather that most of that has moved onto private discord servers in the last two years anyway #and I just neither have the social skills to easily get into those circles nor the money to buy videos direct from masters #like. my friend and I were foiled THRICE from seeing the 50th anniversary jcs tour and they've said several times #that the best present I could get for them would be a video of that production so we could finally watch it together #but I don't even know where to go anymore to check if a video of that tour exists and I doubt I have anything worth trading for it anyway #most nothing problem in the world ik ik. but like. ;-; wanny see me shows...#sorry for being a bit maudlin about musical theater nonsense I'm not expecting any 'there theres'#I just can't really complain about this stuff irl without going through four layers of context first #marina marvels at life

I'm the LAST person to suggest that you have to preface every single comment you make about a character/fictional relationship/etc. you like with a reminder that you Know™ it's pRoBLeMaTiC, but I DO question what the point of acting genuinely for real like there were no problems is.

#I don't even mean in a 'what would it look like if this relationship were healthy' or 'what if this character were a good person'#because I think that's interesting to explore and I have several things I'm working on with elements of that #but I genuinely will hear people go 'there ARE no flaws in this thing' with their whole chest in a completely serious manner #when they could just. talk about how they like the thing without that qualification? and I feel like...#...idk. just because *I* am someone who enjoys horrible characters and deranged unhealthy fictional relationships #I feel like it's a disservice to act like there were never any faults or problems or [insert applicable noun here] at all? it gets rid of #the narrative complexity that's present #I was talking to long-distance best friend last night and I went on a rant about how I wouldn't like jaime as much if he actually WAS as #Super For Real Actually A Completely Good Person Who Was Never Flawed In Any Way as some people act like he is.#it's BECAUSE he does shitty things and isn't A Super Good Person™ that makes him particularly interesting #if you want to imagine a version of this story where he doesn't act horribly and is a 100% Stand Up Guy then go for it you don't need to #justify that by saying that that is completely for real without exception who he actually is in canon?#(this wasn't even the example that brought this on. he's one of many MANY examples.)#and you know I could write a story (I won't) where like. idk altena for example. handles her issues and doesn't become The Antagonist™#where she gets therapy and ends up with a fulfilling life where she participates in society as a more well-adjusted person.#but again it would be an INCREDIBLE disservice to the way this character (a complicated fascinating character) is written to act like #she was Always Like That or that this turn of events was intended by the story or that She Genuinely Never Did Anything Wrong Actually #it's less 'oh people are having sympathy for [xyz] in a story context that I think isn't merited' & it's more 'acting like this is the way #the story was all along and the way it was meant to be interpreted all along is a misreading of the text and I don't think that's fair'#mel's media criticism
