On today’s episode of Kai likes environmental whump more than anything, it’s earthquake time!
DURING
- Earthquakes are loud! They sound like massive trucks driving by (trust me, a teacher told me this once and I didn’t believe her until I experienced my first earthquake, it really does sound like a truck.)
- Everyone’s first instincts are going to be different. In my first earthquake, I didn’t even realize it was an earthquake until it was over.
- If you need a group to get separated, an earthquake will do a decent job at that. The shaking will make it hard to move, and the chaos lends well to separation.
- Earthquakes are 10x scarier in the forest. Trees can and will fall and injury someone.
AFTER
- Powerlines down mean your whumpees are susceptible to electricution.
- Injuries galore! People trapped under debris, cuts from shattered glass, broken limbs from getting hit, the possibilities are near endless.
- The general destruction lends well to mixing up the setting a bit. The team has to rebuild. It’s possible that they’ll have no shelter while they’re recovering.
- And on that note, the destroyed setting will be dangerous to navigate, so everyone can get more injured!
- After my first earthquake, I became extremely sensitive to any vibrations. Any amount of shaking (whether it was someone walking by or the car starting) had me on edge and ready to take cover. Remember that your characters are gonna be traumatized. It’s not everyday the earth literally shakes underneath you.

Personally, I think its the aftermath. At least for me. Whether I mean it or not I nearly always end up projecting onto the whumpee. It's not about torture for the sake of torture, but the thought that someone would be upset if something bad happened to me. That someone would take care of me. Or, in case of stories without a caretaker, the feeling of being interesting enough for a villain to go through all the trouble. Call me a lonely bitch but that stuff just hits.

So I did theatre in HS, and took a couple of classes on horror/gore/injury make up. As a result, when I get bored I’ll put on fake bruises and cuts and things like that 😅 Do any other whumpers out there do the same thing? Validate me haha
