Area X, a self-aware wilderness along the coast, has existed for decades behind a mysterious border. The landscape itself annihilates humans and repurposes them for its own ends. Hundreds of people have died attempting to uncover its secrets. But no one has yet discovered its origins or true purpose.

Now, Area X has spread past its former borders, perhaps to the entire world. Acceptance follows several key figures through the history of Area X, and their attempts to fight against an impossible threat.

You feel numb and you feel broken, but there’s a strange relief mixed in with the regret: to come such a long way, to come to a halt here, without knowing how it will turn out, and yet... to rest. To come to rest. Finally. All your plans back at the Southern Reach, the agonizing and constant fear of failure or worse, the price of that... all of it leaking out into the sand beside you in gritty red pearls.

Content warnings for the book: Extreme body horror, altered states of mind, and psychological manipulation, including hypnosis. Several characters lose their sanity, and you see it happen in real time from their perspective. Intentional self-harm/mutilation as a plot point. Some violence and gore. There are brief references to animal abuse and terminal cancer. Not many happy endings in this one.

This review contains major series spoilers. It’s also super long, as the book covers a lot of material.

Acceptance is the most narratively ambitious book in the Southern Reach trilogy. While Annihilation and Authority feature a single protagonist/perspective, this one has four rotating POVs and one guest narrator partway through the book. It also covers a broader timeline than previous entries, from the origins of Area X 30-ish years ago to the ongoing present-day apocalypse. Acceptance is one of the few books I've read that utilizes first-, second-, AND third-person narration in a single volume, adopting whichever one makes the most sense for the character and their situation

While this sounds complicated, it's basically just a way to tell four different stories at the same time. VanderMeer also uses each storyline to address the major questions of the series. How did Area X come to be? What happened to the biologist? What was the former director of the Southern Reach trying to accomplish? And perhaps most pressing-- what is the fate of the world now that Area X has spread? Not everything is resolved, but it's definitely a conclusion.

The stories have some unifying connections, containing similar themes and callbacks/references to each other. However, for the purposes of this review I will be looking at each story and protagonist individually.

First up is Saul Evans the lighthouse keeper. He's been mentioned before, but never in much detail. Going in, we know a few things-- (1) he knew the director/Cynthia when she was a child and (2) something happened to him that turned him into the Crawler, the eldritch creature which writes the sermon on the walls of the tower in Area X. In Acceptance, we learn he's a former preacher who had a crisis of faith and left his old life, taking up the role of lighthouse keeper on the forgotten coast. It's implied this is partially due to him realizing he's gay and fleeing the resulting homophobic fallout. His past vocation explains the elevated, sermonic language of the words in the tower.

From the onset Saul is an intensely likeable character. He's trying to build a happier and more genuine life for himself. This part probably takes place during the 70s or 80s, but he's cautiously optimistic about his new life with a local fisherman named Charlie. He also forms an unlikely friendship with Gloria (aka Cynthia), a local kid who loves exploring the coast. However, he is tormented by the "Séance and Science Brigade", a shady organization that investigates/worships(?) paranormal phenomena. They sabotage the lighthouse beacon, which we learned in Authority is a marvelous piece of technology with a mysterious history. Shortly after, Saul accidentally absorbs a fragment of the beacon into himself, and shit goes downhill real fast.

While the catalyst of Area X may seem a little weird, the reader can piece together that part of the beacon has extraterrestrial origins, and Saul unintentionally activates part of it. The gradual shift from a normal life to something deeply unsettling has its appeal. I especially like seeing his logs/journal entries and how they devolve as proto-Area X overtakes his mind. The disturbing bar scene near the end is great as well. We know going in that this story has a bad ending (from a human perspective), but learning specifics about Saul as a person gives this more impact. Saul's is a sad tale of a man who wants to make a better life for himself and gets screwed over by bad luck.

Cynthia/Gloria/the former director is the next perspective character. In Annihilation she serves as the antagonist, but in Authority we learn it isn't that simple. She had ulterior motives, handpicking the biologist for the expedition in order to use her as a weapon against Area X. And, of course, we learn she was the little girl in that old picture of Saul, which means she probably grew up there before the border came down.

This part opens with Cynthia/Gloria's death as "the psychologist" in Annihilation, but told from her perspective. From there, the pacing is a little slow, in similar style to Authority. We learn how Cynthia lived her daily life, how she infiltrated the Southern Reach, and her interpersonal relationships with Grace, Whitby, and Lowry. However, her storyline ramps up when detailing Area X and the lead up to twelfth expedition. Lots of old scenes/dynamics from Annihilation hit different with the new context. Especially interesting is the interview between Cynthia and the biologist; turns out there was a lot more context that the biologist obscured in her story. On some level we already knew she was an unreliable narrator, but it's fun to have it pop up again in a different book entirely.

I admire how VanderMeer makes someone who comes off as a throwaway villain into the one of the most complex, important characters in the series. This part is also really cool as it's written in second-person perspective, and the story justification for this (Area X examining her memories) is neat. While I like Cynthia's characterization in this part, the additional bits in Saul's story and his interactions with Gloria add helpful context and emotional impact. The end of the book being her letter to Saul is so damn sad.

The third main storyline follows Control and Ghost Bird in the "current" timeline-- exploring Area X in the immediate fallout of Authority. I love this part for several reasons. The contrast between the two leads and how they perceive themselves, Area X, and the current situation is great. Control is very much losing control, feeling "the brightness" taking over (a callback to Annihilation). Meanwhile, Ghost Bird is in her element, seeing and experiencing things the regular human characters do not. There's the sense that she's truly something "new" in terms of both humanity and Area X.

We also learn a ton of stuff about Area X that is hinted in earlier volumes but confirmed in Acceptance. (MAJOR SPOILERS) The first is that Area X isn't on Earth at all; something briefly hinted at in Annihilation, when the biologist doesn't recognize the stars in the sky. Instead it mimics Earth, or something representative of it. The second big thing is that time works differently here. The uncanny state of decay noted in earlier books isn't actually a direct result of Area X. It's just the passage of time, because way more time passes in Area X compared to the "real" world.

The guest narrator/story is told within the Control/Ghost Bird storyline. The two meet up with Grace, who has managed to survive the Area X attack on the Southern Reach. She took shelter on the mysterious northern island and discovered an old journal written by... the biologist from Annihilation, which details what happened to her over the last THIRTY YEARS (yeah, the time thing) until she finally decided to give into Area X.

This section is sobering and sad; basically a glimpse at how the biologist's isolation slowly made her go mad. She finds an owl (hello cover) that she believes is her husband post Area X conversion and the two live together for decades. When it dies, the biologist loses the will to keep fighting Area X. It's ambiguous if the owl really is her husband, or if she's just projecting, but her heartbreak at the end is probably the strongest emotion she shows in the series. But what is interesting about this part is it confirms a cool detail. Injury and pain can halt the progression of "the brightness" within someone. Which is how the biologist managed to survive 30 years, how Grace survived what turns out to be 3 years, and so on. Even more interesting, when someone DOES finally succumb after warding off the brightness this way, they turn into something more strange and alien. Hence the moaning creature, and Saul/the Crawler. It's also probably why some creatures have incongruencies, like the dolphins with human eyes.

The biologist? She transformed into a giant, oceanic eldritch abomination COVERED in eyes. Just primo aesthetic. We get to see her from both Ghost Bird and Control's perspectives. Ghost Bird feels solidarity and a sort of euphoria meeting her alternate self. Control... basically breaks in the face of something like that, full cosmic horror style. Again, the contrast here is really appealing to me.

Both of their story arcs end in a way that is narratively satisfying, though the ending is open. The future seems hopeful in a bittersweet way, but presumably Area X has destroyed humanity as we know it. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on your perspective and is a central thesis of the series.

So, I said I'd discuss how this series approaches aliens. While there's an appeal to anthropomorphic alien species one can talk to and communicate with, I think an "unknowable" perspective is more realistic. After all, who's to say alien life formed under similar conditions or has any resemblance to our own? The extraterrestrial element in The Southern Reach is very much this type. But it's a fine line to walk in fiction, because handwaving the weird alien stuff as impossible to comprehend (and thus conveniently ducking any responsibility for explaining it) is lazy writing when done wrong.

The thing I find interesting about this series is the human characters understand lots of the what of the alien elements, but not the why. For example, Area X transforms humans into various plants and animals. We know it instills a sense of "brightness" in humans exposed for too long, which encourages assimilation into itself. Humans infected in this way, even if horrified or resistant, have thoughts of this being inevitable, even a good thing. The biologist takes samples in Annihilation and finds several plants and animals have human cells. Control logically knows what Area X does to people, but he is ultimately helpless to resist the process when he experiences it firsthand.

As for the why of it all... we don't really know! There's multiple ideas presented throughout the story. Ghost Bird probably gets closest to the "truth"; that Area X is part of a machine organism from a dead alien civilization, and that it has a bizarre effect on Earth's biology based on its now defunct programming. Other worlds would have their own Area Xes based on this idea, as it's implied the Earth version is just one piece of many. But it's worth noting that Ghost Bird is a creation of Area X and sees things differently than the other characters. Unreliable narration is ironically consistent through the series. So it's hard to say if this is true or not; perhaps it's silly to think any explanation would be understandable to a human mind. Obsession with finding the answer is a recurring theme that drives characters insane. I think this is an interesting compromise when discussing the unknowable; to have some facts and theories but not necessarily a concrete answer.

If I have a criticism for this book, it's the role of the "Séance and Science Brigade", especially in Saul's storyline. While they're set up earlier in the series, we only really see them in this book. Our limited perspective via Saul leaves a lot of ambiguity as to their purpose, function, and goals. There's an implication that Control's family influenced the organization's decision to sabotage the beacon and create Area X. But I consider the subplot with Control's mom/grandfather to be one of the weaker ones in the series, and this book didn't help. The S&SB comes off as campy and ineffectual, which is perhaps intentional? But since they're narratively the fanatics who caused Area X to happen, I really wish they felt more sinister and impactful. There's some attempt to make them scary, but it's not very convincing when compared to Area X. Kind of like a Saturday morning cartoon villain vs the unknowable cosmic horror of the universe. This is a nitpick, though.

While rereading the series, I discovered there's a planned fourth book which may or may not star a minor character from Saul's story. I'm interested to see what else there is to explore about Area X and the Southern Reach. As it stands, I still really like this series. Between the horror and general weirdness, it's not for everyone, but it sure does appeal to me. I think this is one of those series that you'll either adore or hate. Obviously I recommend it.

Frozen - Domestic Assassin (Crack AU) Masterpost

This is a Masterpost of all the fanfiction I’d written (all on Tumblr) based in @ultranos’ Domestic Assassin crack AU which was hilarious for a fairly good-sized group of us! And from what I”ve seen in my notifications, people are still enjoying and finding fics of mine in this AU even to this day, which is great!

She is a designer she makes her own clothing pieces she isn’t some big huge brand that you would know of, she is a small business so far it’s just her she is just starting it up she wants to have a boutique to sell her pieces that’s her dream. As for me I’m just trying to have a good time as much as possible you only live once right? So live it up.

Y/N POV:

“So Y/N are you excited for Friday’s big charity surf event?” My best friend since birth asked me on the way to dropping me off at home, “of course I am” you said hopping out of the car “you know I love helping” you bid your goodbyes and walked to the driveway only to see a moving car in the drive way you walked fast into your house “what’s all this about?” You asked confused “oh Y/N I must have forgotten to tell you we are moving to the Outer-banks” your father James said.

That was yesterday now you were currently in the outerbanks your parents went back to California to end some business so it was just you for a while, you were at this restaurant called The Wreck you chose to go there cause it was the closest to your house and it also had everything on the menu. Your parents had bought a piece of land 8 months ago it was on the cut your father wanted it to be in figure 8 but your mom said the cut had a better view and your dad was all for the saying happy wife happy life.

You were eating your burger and fries with a dr. Pepper, when your phone buzzed you looked to see your best friend Maia texted you saying she can no longer be friends with a liar, your heart sped up and your hands sweaty you texted back saying you had no idea that you were moving you found out right when she dropped you off. You hit send and she replied back 3 mins later saying she knows how your father is and how he can do terrible things but not telling his daughter about a move wasn’t one of them.

You went to respond back saying that you really had know idea you didn’t know if your dad genuinely forgot to tell you or just chose not to till the very last second, literally and that you wouldn’t miss the charity surfing event for anything. You hit send but it failed to deliver meaning one thing, your best friend had blocked you. You looked around the restaurant and saw 3 boys and a girl eating and laughing they looked very close with one another. Like family. And here you were in a brand new state in a new town with no one not even your friends back home.

You were so overwhelmed you dug in your purse grabbed at 100$ bill slammed it on the table jumped out of the stool so quick it fell to the ground, it was like the whole restaurant silenced and looked over to the noise you felt like a deer in headlights frantically looking at the people watching you making you feel so much worse you didn’t bother picking the stool up and you ran out of the restaurant tears streaming down your face.

JJ’S POV:

Me and the rest of the pogues were eating at The Wreck like always because kiara’s family owns it and we get free food, it’s scrap but food is food. Kie was trying to keep us quiet so her dad doesn’t yell at her when a loud bang went off. we all looked in the direction of a girl who wore black ripped jeans, maroon tank top, with a plaid blue flannel on top. She looked frazzled and not by her stool hitting the ground usually I would have looked away but I’d never seen this girl before and I could tell she wasn’t a touron because she was alone, I looked closer and could tell she was trying to hold back tears and then she ran out of the restaurant.

“I hope she paid for her food or atleast left a tip” kie mumbled “hey maybe someone should check on her” pope said moving his stuff around, “yeah I’ve never seen her before, wouldn’t want her to get lost or run into a kook” John b said. I got up out of my chair “where are you going?” Kie asked confused “did you not hear the conversation someone should make sure she is ok or at least make sure she knows where she is going” I said like it was the most obvious thing ever “yeah I heard but why you?” She challenged.

“Because I have to go to work in like 15 mins, I’m already on the way out might as well. Oh hey tell your dad I said foods great I’m coming back tonight for more” I said heading out the restaurant, I quickly found the girl with her knees to her chest I made my way to her the closer I got I could hear and tell she was crying. She had long strawberry blonde hair that was very curly and she had a blue feather earring that hung to her shoulder. She is definitely a pogue probably a new one us pogues all know each other whether we are close or not.

“Hey uh I saw what happened in there just wanna see if you’re ok, or if you knew your way around you look new.” I said trying not to startle her, she looked up and me and smiled softly “yeah, um I’m ok just a tough 2 days is all, thank you for checking in though” she said looking back out to the ocean I decided to take a seat next to her I have 10 more mins to lose anyway “hey you’re the first girl I’ve caught crying to never wipe the tears away quickly and pretend as if they weren’t there” I said laughing.

She laughed too, “I guess it’s just stupid to hide something obvious, why pretend?” She asked looking at me her mascara and eye liner I think kie told me once what it was. I personally think it’s an eye marker but whatever Floats your boat. It was smeared all over her face from her crying and probably wiping it i motioned to her face and hand to let her know “uh your face stuff is well on your face, but like all over your face” I said she looked at her hand and touched under her eyes pulling them away and seeing more had transferred to it. Most girls would have tried to fix it but she didn’t. “I guess it is, oh well” she said wiping her hands on her jeans.

This girl was different then all the girls I’ve met you could tell she cared because she was crying about something but when it came to herself or rather so her appearance she didn’t care one bit, “I’m sorry about disturbing your meal, I just moved here from California. The move was surprising my parents had to have known for months maybe even a year but they didn’t tell me till yesterday, and now I’m here while they’re there wrapping up business. I’m upset because my best friend didn’t believe I just found out and she blocked me. Which I know sounds SO stupid, but I’m all alone here in a town I’ve never even been before I know no one and my best friend left so I can’t even talk to her about it. Life just fucking sucks right now” she rambled and wiping some tears that fell. In a way I can understand that.

“Hey don’t apologize I was done eating and I have work soon so you saved me from getting bitched at for being late, and I’m sorry about that, that does suck but

“Oh anytime, here I’ll give you my number so we can plan sometime to get together and I can show you around, also show you the best spots” I said giving her my phone. She put her number in and I took her phone putting mine in hers of course mine is “JJ🏄🏼‍♂️🚬” I gave her phone back and saw that she put her name as Y/N🦋 (AKA dramatic girl who cries) “you know Incase you forget you won’t now” she laughed making fun of herself which I admired a lot.

“I won’t forget, In fact after work the first thing I’ll do is text you” I said standing up and pointing to her she stood up too “you better you’re my only hope” “did you just quote star wars at me?” I asked “yes I did and I don’t regret it” “oh we are so best friends now” I said looking down at her she was a lot shorter than I was it was cute my own personal arm rest “I’m serious though text me! You’re my only friend now and the only person to text. My fate is in your hands young jedi” Y/N said putting her hands together and bending slightly I did the same back “may the force be with you, and I’ll text you don’t worry. You’re the only person to quote Star Wars at me and it’s now my favorite thing” I yelled as I continued to walk away smiling to myself.

Mystery POV:

Blood splatters, leaving a long trail which arcs in a circle around him. Mystery flings Lewis’s arm, now containing the cursed abomination, across the ground. It bounces twice, skidding to a stop several feet away. He bares his teeth, snarling, fanning out his tails so he occupies as much space as physically possible. It is a warning to anything that would dare challenge him. The forsaken creature twitches and spasms pathetically, helpless without a proper host. Only his sworn oath not to pursue holds Mystery back from ripping it into smaller chunks and burying it in the desert.

The disembodied limb flips itself upright and, at the centre of its palm, is one green eye marred with gold flecks. Lighting flashes accompanied by rolling thunder which amplifies his growls so they shake the ground as his anger grows. When he concentrates, he can feel water collecting in the clouds, the static in the air and the arid land, anticipating rain. Mystery cannot channel the full might of the storm, that is beyond him, but he can still funnel some of its latent natural energy into the space around him. The air crackles.

Rightfully, the creature inhabiting Lewis’s arm immediately about-faces and scuttles off, disappearing behind a low-growing shrub. Oh, how he longs to give chase and punish it for threatening what is his.

“My…Mystery?”

Vivi’s voice pierces his rage, slicing it apart like a knife. Mystery tears his attention away from the challenger, looking over his shoulder. Vivi's eyes are wide, face pale, breath shallow and rapid. Lewis is unconscious, blood pooling under him. The human’s aura dims as his body fails, connection to the physical world weakening.

“Help me.”

If there were ever a moment that Mystery had felt true shame, this would it. Hastily, Mystery spits the blood collecting at the back of his throat onto the concrete. It tastes like iron and broken promises, conjuring unpleasant memories. He is beside Vivi in one elongated jump, examining both Lewis and Arthur. Both are dying, Lewis faster than Arthur. In his attempt to save the human, he may have inadvertently hastened his death.

/I am here./ Mystery reassures even as he desperately sifts through several centuries worth of memories and experience for a solution. Healing others and repairing damage had never been skills under his preview. Healing was the domain of different, more benevolent, entities. Ask him to erect a protective ward or cast an illusion and he could do so in a heartbeat, but foxes weren’t healers.

Vivi is now breathing hard, glancing from where she is holding Arthur and over to Lewis, lying prone. Dying.

No. Not good enough. Perhaps a spell to slow decay and put both humans into a stasis state would work. Once upon a time, he had held enough power to speed or slow the growth of whole rice fields, matching them to weather patterns. Acres upon acres grew or failed at his command. He hasn’t been able to call on that ability since his oath to the Yukino family replaced his oath to Inari. But…he knows the theory behind that sort of time-based magic, and even without divine help, he should be able to accomplish something similar on a smaller scale. It would just require personal sacrifice.

He glances back at his seven tails. The physical manifestation of his skill and experience. One tail for each human should do it. Two hundred years’ all up. Mystery has never willingly given one up, let alone two tails at once…but it would be more than adequate payment for the ritual he wants to perform. A spell to extend their lives by slowing decay.

Why is he even hesitating?

/ I will save them./

Carefully, he reaches for the intricate web natural energy which makes up the living world, feeding in his own power. Behind him, his tails still, then sway in a very particular pattern, weaving a dome-like structure which tightens around Lewis and Arthur.

Time slows.

So focused is he on the task, that he barely hears the car pull up or see how the area around him lightens in its headlamps. It is not until Vivi speaks, voice scratchy, that he registers a second presence.

“Dad…”

Touma Yukino drops beside him, flustered yet determined. Mystery has never been gladder for the human’s presence. In this trance-like state, both Yukino’s glow a bright, fluorescent blue. They seem to be moving doubly fast now that Mystery has detached himself from the regular flow of time.

“You’re doing fine honey. Keep holding that down,” Touma says. More footsteps and louder panicked voices sound behind him.

“…heard gunshots? What’s happening?”

“I need the lights on.” Touma yells, “Quickly!”

The building’s lights flicker on and there is a low gasp and more commotion. Mystery closes his eyes and concentrates, attempting to block out the humans panicking and yelling.

“No…keep the girls inside…bring the medical kit.”

Alongside the yelling is the scent of fear, thick, almost overwhelming now Lewis’s parental figures have joined in assisting Touma.

“Lewis…calling the hospital… need an air-lift...only way…”

The sounds fade. All the chaos drops away becoming a soft silence. Mystery inhales and exhales, opening his eyes to examine the faint transparent outlines of Arthur and Lewis’s auras, no longer weakening.

“I was beginning to think I would fade to nothing before I had this chance to talk.”

The oddly familiar voice comes suddenly, causing circular wrinkles to form mid-air. Mystery’s eyes dart up, searching for the source. The sound disperses, ripping away in all directions. He cannot move far while in the middle of this sort of ritual. If he is interrupted now, the consequences would be catastrophic.

“Over here.” The air shimmers and a second Kitsune, wearing a set of eye-glasses and sporting suspiciously familiar black and red fur, appears. Judging by the human’s lack of reaction, Mystery is the only one to see it.

/This is a trick./ He growls, suspicious of the creature mirroring his appearance. /What is your business here?/

His snarled question is met with a dismissive tail wave. A single tail wave. This Kitsune only has one. “Only to give a warning, late as it may be.”

The other fox flickers, losing transparency, like it is not wholly there. The very act of speaking seems to be weakening it.

“In my timeline, between now and two years into the future, Lewis, Arthur and Vivi die. It was, in no small part, due to my inaction. With help, I sort to send Arthur’s soul along with this echo to act as a guide. I had hoped to avert the disaster. I thought my death would be payment enough for this transgression against the Natural Order. “

Mystery narrows his eyes. /Arthur’s aura./ He interrupts, /That was you. What did you do?/

“Mid-way through attempting to merge the older and younger soul I was interrupted. I am sorry.”

Before Mystery can snap another insult the other continues, “When I initiated the ritual someone or something intervened and I was trapped, helpless, watching history repeat itself. It is just as well that Arthur and Lewis’s fates are not solely reliant on my ability to act or everything would have all been for naught.” It looks somewhat reproachful now, fading so it is barely visible.

“Shiromori is coming and I fear that, in reversing time, I have put you all in greater danger. But ..." Now there is a clear note of hope in the other's voice, "at least I have managed to give this warning. Protect them and do not make the same mistakes I did.”

The echo disappears completely, leaving Mystery cold with fear.

When Mystery completes his stasis spell, he immediately shifts to his dog form. Even the small transformation leaves him wholly exhausted. He feels the fatigue in his bones, and in his head, fuzzy and distracting. Quickly, he staggers out of view, so he does not accidentally trip one of the many humans who arrive and begin to prepare Lewis and Arthur for transport. The loss of two tails, two hundred years’ worth of experience, is disorientating. It is like having his insides scooped out and replaced with empty space. His memories swim around, disjointed, as he attempts to stitch them together. He hopes he has not lost anything too important but only time would tell.

Uncomfortably woozy and lightheaded, his thoughts turn to the warning.

The other Kitsune had talked of an alternate future and oncoming danger. Fretfully, he scans the horizon. All he sees are clouds and a wall of rain coming towards him from across the desert. The taint left behind by the demonic abomination is faint. Most likely, it is attempting to put as much distance between itself and Mystery before sunrise. As it should. Mystery growls. There is one final flash of lightning and the downpour reaches him, falling in a thick sheet, drenching him in seconds. A wind picks up, turning the droplets into tiny needles.

Shiromori cannot have escaped her seal. It was guarded by the Yukino main family. Touma would have heard word of it breaking and informed him. Surely, this was a trick or a trap. No sane creature went against the Natural Order.

Mystery tries to shake the image of the faded Kitsune, painfully weak, its single tail curled over its paws. The creature had spoken like someone mourning the loss of a loved one. His kind are not meant to love. Mystery stares down at his dog paws and his vision blurs, water running into his eyes. He feels himself shiver, growing cold. This form had always been one of his weaker ones. A poor choice of disguise. He blinks the exhaustion away, staggering to his feet, having to brace all four paws.

Vivi. He should find Vivi. He owes her an apology and an explanation. Whatever otherworldly dangers may be approaching, it was useless to fret without properly examining Arthur first. He could start panicking once he had confirmed the existence of time-travel.

Slowly, he trots around to the door of the Pepper’s diner. Whereas moments prior the driveway had been alive with commotion, it is now empty. All that is left of the evening’s chaos are two puddles of blood being quickly washed away. Would Vivi still be here? She might have followed Lewis and Arthur to the hospital. He sniffs, and finding the rain too heavy, searches his connection to the Yukino family.

Vivi is, indeed, inside the diner. He scratches at the door, hoping to be let in.

Vivi answers, looking down at him with a blank expression. Then she turns and walks away. Silent. Mystery waits for a beat before following, shouldering the door closed to shut the rain behind him. The many times he has been in this building, it has always been awash with colour and activity. He could barely walk two steps without getting petted and pulled in various directions by Lewis’s younger relatives. Not that Mystery had minded, the younger ones always reminded him of when Vivi was small and would follow him around attempting to grab his tail. Concerned by the room’s unnatural stillness, he listens. Several feet away he can hear the mummer voices belonging to the Pepper patriarch and the three smaller humans.

Satisfied that the family seams safe, he continues into the next room. Vivi has moved to sit on the large family-sized couch. She is balled up in one corner, knees drawn to her chest. Before her, resting on the low coffee table, is a cup of flowery tea with steam slowly rising above it. Her clothes are clean, and her hair is damp, smelling of soap and shampoo. From his position of the floor, in spite of the rooms low lighting, Mystery can make out how the skin on her hands and face is red like she’s scrubbed them a little too hard.

/Arthur and Lewis?/ Mystery asks, because, after setting his spell in motion, he had been too tired to see its aftermath.

“A helicopter picked them up. Dad and Lew’s mom are on their way to the hospital. Apparently, I need to stay here and ‘get some rest.’” Vivi falls silent after a sarcastic imitation of what Mystery thinks is Touma. Rain pelts against the window, rattling the glass, and wind whistles around the building.

He sighs, sits, and waits. There was nothing more for him to do. Last he had seen, both Lewis and Arthur were stable enough physically. They should live with proper care.

Vivi is the one to break the elongated silence, “That demon, the body snatcher, is it…”

/Gone./

“It’s not in Lewis?”

/No. I removed and sealed it to the best of my ability. It will not be possessing anything for a long while./

“I see.”

Vivi falls silent and glares at him, eyes accusatory. Tentatively, he tries wagging his tail. He knows it is far past too late to continue the dog act, but Vivi always loved when he wagged his tail. A small part of him hopes it will make her smile.

“You lied.”

Mystery winces.

“All this time. You were lying. You were all lying. Dad, gran….did mom know?”

/She was aware, yes./

Her expression darkens, stricken. “Why? I thought dad was just a paranoid stick in the mud. Maybe, if you’d told me the truth, I could have actually been useful.”

/I believe the reasoning was that you were safer not knowing./

“Well, congratulations you failed.” Vivi stands, stomping out of the room and to the kitchen sink, dumping out her tea. She paces back and forth for a minute before turning to the door.

/Where are you going?/

“I’m not waiting here. I'm driving to Milton...I'll sit outside the emergency room all night if I have to.”

/It is raining./ He points out helplessly, following on her heels as she picks up a jacket which is coloured purple and several sizes too large.

She spins and glares again, “Does this look like the face of someone who cares?"

Mystery hesitates, pausing to watch her pack a bag and have a brief discussion with the elder Pepper. The short man escorts Vivi to the door, visibly tied and worried, giving Mystery an expression of acute unease. The faint smell of fear collects around him.

“Are you coming or what. It’s a forty-minute drive. Plenty of time for you to start explaining things.” Vivi orders, facing away, freezing at the door, silhouetted in the frame.

Mystery skirts in close. Despite her brash words of action, Vivi remains still, eyes fixed on the pavement just visible through the rain. The blood from earlier has all but washed away, soaking into the ground. The faint red streaks remaining have Vivi transfixed. Tears are dripping down her face, falling in time with the rain. Her hands tighten on the jacket. Mystery watches and aches. Many myths and stories caution against becoming too attached to humans. Mystery thinks of his failure to save Arthur, and the forced decision to pick Lewis instead. His inaction had almost killed them both, and it should not have affected him as much as it has. He can still feel the echo of rage and fear. A decade ago, he would have simply chosen the route with the greatest chance of success and thought of it no further.

Now, all he wants to do is stop Vivi’s crying.

/I am sorry./

NOTE: Mystery joins the angst party. The next part is either going to be a Lewis or Arthur POV. Since they’re interchangeable, which would people rather read first?

ALSO: I realised as I was editing. I accentually cut the foreshadowing for echo-Mystery out for some reason. It was supposed to be in part 22 but I think that it was before I decided to add several Mystery POVs to the fic so it wouldn’t have made much sense back then. Might add it back in at some point. I should really keep better plot notes.

Prompt: Ending her relationship with Scott was easy, standing up before her authoritarian and manipulating father was also easy. In this new chapter of her life Hayley must learn that marrying Kamilah also meant marrying Ahmanet Financial and with that comes with all the attention and pursuit of the media as a new sociliate married to one of America's most powerful women. When one day a pipe causes a flood in her old apartment, her former housemate and best friend needs a place to stay. Lily ends up moving to Kamilah's penthouse, suddenly privacy becomes something precious and rare, clothes and food pop up around the house and one of Kamilah's precious furniture appears accidentally broken. "Sit down, Hayley. Everyone is looking.” Robert said taking a sip of his glass of red wine. Hayley clenched her fists furiously, thinking how she was stupid enough to believe this was just a family dinner when it was actually an excuse to get her back to Scott.

"Hell no." She bit her lips and turned to leave, But she only managed to take a few steps before her father's voice reached her ears again, stronger than ever.

"I would not leave the restaurant if I were you. Do you know that important meeting your wife is in? The clients are my associates, and it would be a waste of a good deal with Ahmanet Financial if I gave them a call and they left. You want this? Do you want her to lose a millionaire contract?"

He used the perfect excuse for Kamilah not to show up. He used his best resources to keep her from coming here. Reluctant and disgusted, Hayley sat in the chair facing Scott.

"Honey, we just want to talk." Her mother said touching her hand lightly.

"Are you with him now, Mother? I thought you told me to be happy with who I loved.” Hayley sighed, staring at the plate on the table. Her mom had come so easily back to his side, she did not know why she was still surprised by this whole situation.

"I'm not on anyone's side, Hayley. I just want us to be a family. No more fighting, no more silly arguments.” She scolded her.

"So Kamilah should be here and not Scott," Hayley said firmly looking deep into her father's eyes. She saw his lips contract and as he rolled his eyes only the mention of the name. "She's part of this family as much as I am."

"Stop acting like a child. This madness you call marriage will not last. Her relationship with you did not last before, it was an impulsive and childish act to have married her. Just the actions of a teenager.” Robert said.

"I'm a grown woman who knows my actions well and being married to her was one of the best things I've ever done. Not that you'll ever understand, but she makes me happy.” Hayley retorted.

"Now you two come. We came here to just talk and stop that immaturity of you once and for all.” Her mother looked at both of them.

"And what is Scott doing here then?" Hayley gestured angrily to the one sitting opposite at her at the table watching the heated argument.

"I'm glad you finally asked a decent question." Robert said. "We invite Scott to dine with us because he is important to us and we have news."

"Wait, wait. So any guy you hired and ordered to marry me in London and who I spent years believing was the one guy in my life while I was being cheated on by you guys is more important than my wife ?! What the hell?” Hayley paused, looking at both of them.

"You know I love Kamilah, she's like a daughter to me. Though I think she's too old for you, but we've lived with Scott for a long time, too.” Her mother said.

Hayley rolled her eyes.

"...And I care about you, Hayley. I honestly do. I would do anything to get our relationship back. You meant so much to me, it still means.” He said with those sad eyes, Hayley huffed indignantly not believing a word. False.

"Tell that to someone who cares."

"Regardless of our disagreements over your love life and your life choices, I'm happy with the news that my friends at the Hospital bring. They say you are a formidable doctor, of course I did expect you to be, you’re my daughter.” Robert continued his lewdness too proud to see the problem in front of him. "Tell her, son. Tell her the news we bring.” Robert touched Scott's shoulder.

"Me and your dad talked and we arranged this dinner to tell you that I'll be moving to New York. I got a place at Mount Sinai Hospital, Hayley. We're going to work together, is not it great? "He smiled excitedly.

"You—What?" Hayley stared indignantly.

Kamilah's Penthouse

"No, no. This is wrong. That's very wrong,” Hayley said as she paced the apartment. Kamilah sat quietly across the room, her notebook on the table. She had not said a word as Hayley told her what had happened that night. "They deceived me, made me think they wanted to make amends when in fact they're throwing Scott at me again!" She ran her hands exasperated in her blond hair, glanced at Kamilah, and noticed that she was silent with her eyes turned to the window.

"Kam?" Hayley called her.

No response.

“Kamilah?” She tried again.

"... I suppose it makes sense. Your parents never supported our relationship, they were expected to get Scott back into your life, "she said quietly. Hayley stopped looking at her, she was quiet and with a look that Hayley knew well.

"Babe? Are you okay?” Hayley approached slowly, still studying her features.

"It was a long meeting." Kamilah gave a weak smile in return. "I have to make some calls. You must be tired, it's been a long day. I'll see you in the bedroom, okay?” Kamilah got up and left the room so fast she did not get a chance to say anything more.

What she didn’t know was what actully was happening.

Kamilah pov.

She could feel him, he was getting closer and closer. Even in her dreams, she was not strong enough, strong enough to stop him. Strong enough to keep him from harming anyone she loved. Someone she could not bear to lose, and he knew it. He always knew when she was loving someone when a new person had come into her life. He ruined everything, was all he knew to do for centuries.

Maybe that was her karma after so many bad things she had done in her life. So many people she had killed and taken the blood. Maybe her karma would always lose someone to him. And if there really was a god, he would not allow such atrocity to happen, would not allow more lives to be taken by him. But he would never answer her call, ever.

She ran barefoot through the dark forest, what was her suit were now only the remains of a black jacket and a bloodstained white shirt, even with her inhuman speed, she was not fast enough to run from him, she knew that.

"Kamilah?" That familiar voice called out. Kamilah stopped halfway, looking back, seeing that shadow through the trees. Him. She could see the dark smile on his face and the laughter forming in his throat.

Her feet ran again, she needed to find Adrian and Hayley. Where was she? She needed to protect the only thing that mattered in her life, the only thing she could not live through. Her wife.

But before she could take another step, she nearly tripped over her own feet as she saw a body in front of her. A body on the forest floor among the leaves of an old oak tree. It was Hayley, her throat was torn. Kamilah's blood froze, for an instant, she thought she was hallucinating. She thought she was seeing things, but Hayley was so real. The first steps were hesitant before she fell to the floor beside her body, sobbing and gripping the cold, dead body of her wife.

"No, no! Please... Please, Hayley.” She touched Hayley's cold cheeks hoping that by some miracle, she would open those gorgeous green eyes. But that would not happen, she felt her chest tight and the lack of air was eminent, instead of the sadness the anger had filled with fervor. As Kamilah hugged her wife's dead body, something as fast as a bullet pushed her away from the one thing she loved.

Before Kamilah could respond, she was stuck against the oak tree. Hanging by the neck with Gaius's hands tightening her throat. Gaius's somber smile had returned, and his blue eyes glowed with malice. Kamilah was staring at Hayley's body before turning her eyes to the monster in front of her.

"Why are you running my queen?" That terrible voice sounded through the trees.

That night Kamilah opened her eyes widened with fear, sitting up in bed hurrying, gasping for breath, red eyes focused on her bedroom door. When she realized there was no apparent threat at that moment, she ran her hand over her face and hair, leaning against the head of the bed and taking time to calm down.

Her eyes turned to Hayley, the first thing she thought of then. The one thing she wanted to keep safe. Hayley slept in deep sleep beside her on the bed, even with her sudden awakening, that had not awakened her. Soon Kamilah thought the fact that the girl spent hours on shifts at the hospital made her enjoy a good night's sleep and she would not wake up so easily.

Kamilah touched her back and kissed her hair gently. She got up and searched for her black robe that was on an armchair in the corner of the room. Kamilah dressed him and left the room quietly.

She found herself with a bottle of whiskey waiting for her at her bar. She prepared a quick cocktail and leaned over the kitchen counter, staring at the walls bitterly, her eyes went to the ring on her finger, she removed the ring and began to look it. How such a small thing carried so great a significance and how it took decades before she met someone who made her want such a commitment. She never thought she'd feel it again and that Hayley would give her a second chance.

At that moment the front door opened silently revealing a not-so-sober Lily carrying her boots into her hands and a drunken smile that soon changed as she came face to face with the CEO in the kitchen.

"Jesus, Kamilah! You scared the hell out of me now” She touched her own chest trying to keep her voice down.

"You really should be scared. You have been out all night.” Kamilah said softly still with her ring in her hands.

"And why the hell are you standing there drinking in the dark? Is this part of the CEO's manual? Drink contemplating your own existence in the dark? "

"Very funny, Lily." Kamilah returned her ring to its proper place. She would not tell Lily that she had something so simple as a nightmare. She was not in the mood to listen to gamer jokes at that moment. "I just wanted to drink it now."

"And you could not turn the lights on?"

"I did not want to wake my wife.”

“So... How was the dinner with your family?”

Kamilah cursed under her breath.

“Not so well I see” Lily said. “Don’t worry about her parents, they don’t like anybody. It’s not personal.”

“I’m not trying to impress them. I don’t need them to approve our relationship, if I have Hayley’s love that’s all that I need.” Kamilah said.

“Well... You’re a big softie under this ice exterior, hm?” Lily laughed taking a ice gaze from Kamilah.

“You should go to bed, I'll do the same” Kamilah said, drinking the rest of her drink and disappearing into her office before Lily could say anything else. She pulled her cell phone off the desk and dialed Adrian's number. "Adrian? We need to talk. Something happened."

That dream was a warning, she knew it, she knew it could only mean one thing. He was back.

Monthly Wrap Up: December

Last month of the year! This was the month where I tried to tackle all the books that I had set aside that I wanted to read before the end of the year, and I actually managed to read all but one of them, so that was good. Unfortunately it wasn't a great reading month. There was one book that I really loved, but the rest of the books were just mediocre or bad. 2 of those books I gave 1 stars to and 1 of them was the last full length novel I read this year, which was a huge disappointment. The very last book I read this year was a collection of short stories that I had already read and while it wasn't bad, it wasn't as good as I remember it being. So it's sad that I ended this reading year not with a bang but with a fizzle. I do plan on posting a yearly wrap up and some best and worst of the year lists, but I can't say when that will come out because I imagine they will take awhile. Happy New Years to everyone and I hope you have a good 2019.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant: I was intrigued by the premise of The Red Tent, with it being biblical fiction novel that focuses on the females, specifically Jacob's wives and his daughter who is only mentioned once in the Bible. I was in the mood for a historical fiction and for a female driven narrative, so I picked this one up. I would recommend this book if your looking for a light historical fiction novel, with little action, and don't mind the fact that the story is based on stories from the Bible. The first half was decent when it focused on Jacob's four wives: Leah, Rachel, Zilaph, and Bilah. I liked reading about their stories and I thought their relationships were well done, with it's ups and down. Then when things shifted to Dinah, I started to lose interest in the story. I was never attached to Dinah like I was her mothers, and I felt she and all relationships she was in were fairly underdeveloped. By the end of the book I was just skimming through the story because nothing changed or progressed. In general I would say this book has pacing issues because everything felt fairly quick but nothing was really happening. I didn't feel like this was the female driven narrative I was looking for because Dinah was underdeveloped even though it was her story and for the a book titled the red tent, which was strictly a woman's domain, the story spent very little time in the red tent. The book was mediocre, with the only really bad aspect of it being Dinah's romances, but as both as historical fiction novel and one that focuses on the women, I found this book to be a little disappointing.

Daughters of the Storm by Kim Wilkins: This was a book I was so eagerly anticipating, like I went out and got it the day it finally came out in paperback. I understood that it would focus on 5 sisters going on a quest to save their father from a curse, so I thought I was getting a good sisterly narrative. I also went into this book thinking it was a standalone, and I've really been in the mood for some good adult fantasy standalones. Whatever expectations I had going into this book were quickly ruined. The plot was simple, find the cure for a dying king, but it was too simple of a plot for a book that just dragged on. Maybe it picks up more in the second half, I wouldn't know because I DNFed this book half way in (because of that this will be my full spoiler review). I was bored with the story and the world building had very little development. In fact the only thing the only piece of world building that had any development was the new religion gaining popularity, which is both clearly based on Christianity and will clearly be used against the sisters because it doesn't want women in charge. While those aspects were bad, they weren't what caused me to quit the book. Despite this being an epic fantasy, plot is pushed aside to make the story more character driven, and that was the problem. I really hated the characters, with a burning passion. I admit I struggle with unlikeable characters, but if you're going to write unlikeable characters I at least want them to be sympathetic the majority of the time. I don't have to like what they're doing but I do believe they are doing it for good reasons. Of all the POV characters there was only one that I found sympathetic, even though she had her faults, and that was Rose. She's trapped in a loveless marriage to broker peace and had a child with her husband's nephew. My only issue with her is that she doesn't try to be sneaky with her romance when no one wants it to happen and she doesn't see her husband as a threat because he doesn't like women in power, even though he clearly is. All other characters were horrendous. Will is a prince who turns into a crazy killer once he gets the notion of power inside his head. I could say he was sympathetic because he did want to protect his mother, but I just get crazy vibes from him. He does get killed in this book, so I'm not sure if he was even that relevant of a character. Willow is a zealot of the new faith (whose name I cannot remember, tri-something), who does shady things just cause angels are telling her to (my guess is that she's got a mental disorder which is causing that). Ivy is a brat who complains about doing any work and is only interest in men, who she thinks she's in love based on one glance. Her maturity level doesn't improve and I think she's the one that tells Rose's husband about the affair in the hopes that her and the king's nephew will end up together (which all backfires in the worst way possible). I think she's also killed in this one, but I'm not sure. Ash was the one I was hoping to like, but she was just brooding (which I hate) and really wishy-washy, not having much of a spine. She tries to talk to people about her magic, but no one will take her seriously because of how young she is, and in the end she goes into self exile because she doesn't want to hurt her sisters, which I didn't really like because it solidified me not caring about her. Now we get to the worst one, the sister that I actively wanted to die in this book and honestly the main reason I put this book down. Bluebell was the absolute worst. She had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Where do I even begin the her. She's the oldest sister and heir to the throne, but she absolutely abuses her power. In fact I'll just copy everything I wrote about her in a recent Top 5 Wednesday post explaining why I hated her. She only likes people if they are blindly obedient to her and is very mean and insulting to her sister Rose because Rose won't do this (in fact she makes it clear that she only views Rose as whore to be sold off), seems to think she's a great leader but shows very few qualities of being a great leader, sees everyone as either an underling that must follow her without question or an enemy that must be slaughtered with no in between. Her worst offense is that she thinks everything she does is the absolute right thing and won't entertain the possibility of being wrong. She is very cruel to her step mother, despite everyone telling her to stop, and as a result the step mother accidentally curses the father because she is terrified of what Bluebell will do to her when she comes into power. When Bluebell discovers this, she doesn't see the error of her ways, she's determined to kill the woman and only stops because her father (the only person I believe she cares about) told her to stop because it would look bad. I hated her with a passion throughout the first half of the entire book and hoped that she would change in some way by the end but nope. She is just as self righteous as she was at the start and is unsympathetic of Rose's suffering. She's just a stupid bully who wants an army of sycophants. Yeah, I hated her, she might be my least favorite female character of the year. At halfway into this book I skipped ahead to see if anything gets redeemed or solved, and nothing does, so needless to say I won't be reading the next book. I almost thought this was a debut novel because of how poorly it was written, but turns out it wasn't. I do applaud any one able to successful produce a non toxic novel, because it's a long challenge, but as an author with multiple novels already out these basic storytelling mistakes shouldn't be happening (this was the same problem I had with V.E Schwab). This book was one of the biggest disappointments of the year and I'm glad I waited to get it in paperback because I will probably be unhauling it.

The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine: This was an interesting case because I thought I would be saving this book for January but I ended up deciding to read this book and see if it was as good as I remember and I am so glad I did. It's a Snow White retelling that has a more modern feel to it. If you liked Snow White's back story in the first season of Once Upon a Time you will probably like this one. It has several nods to the original story but adds it's own twist to them, and I really loved that. Lorelai is a great protagonist because she's very mature and takes her responsibilities seriously and wants the best for everyone. She also has magic which is really cool and makes her a worthy opponent to Irina, the evil queen. Irina was a fantastic villain, like she would arguably make my top 5 list of best villains for this year. You get that shred of humanity within her and bits of her back story which makes it clear why she is the way she is. Unlike the original version, Irina isn't obsessed with beauty, she's obsessed with power and loyalty, which makes her both dangerous and a little crazy. Kol is the prince who was made king at the beginning of the book, and I also really liked him. He's similar to Lorelai in many ways because he's willing to make some significant sacrifices to ensure the safety of his people and loves his friends and family. Lorelai and Kol's relationship was so good because they talk and push themselves to be better for the other. There's a bit of Insta Love but because the time length it took for them to get serious and the fact that it's contained within just this story makes it easy to forgive. All in all I thought the story was great, the characters were great, the relationships were great, and even the magic was great and I'm so glad this book was as good as I remember it being. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because of some miscommunication stuff and stupid character choices. The Shadow Queen received 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The Registry by Shannon Stoker: I got the next book in the trilogy this year, and for awhile I was debating if I should reread this book or not. I didn't need to reread it but there was a part of me that wanted to, so I did and I'm glad I did. This is a fairly underrated dystopian, about a future America where women are married off to the highest bidder in a system called the registry. The protagonist, Mia, has an awakening shortly before she's has her debut, and she makes a quick decision to run for Mexico with her best friend and a farm hand, as her psychopathic fiance works to prevent her from crossing the border. One reason I liked this one was because it's not like a stereotypical YA dystopian. It isn't about one girl trying to take down a system, or about romance (although that does come up), it was a display of frighteningly realistic dystopian environment and a straight forward chase narrative that is definitely suspenseful. I liked Mia, I thought she was a fairly well rounded individual, and while Grant (Mia's fiance) was a disgusting character and was pretty realistic and served his purpose well. The rest of the characters I didn't like so much: Andrew (the farm hand) was a bit flat and brooding, Carter was a bit entitled, and Whitney (Mia's best friend) was so whiny and naive. I get that she serves as a bit of foil for Mia, but I would have liked them to have a stronger relationship. The only thing I really disliked about this book was the romance. This book does have a love triangle in it, and unfortunately it's not one of the better done ones. Andrew and Mia's romance felt a bit forced and Andrew wasn't nice to Mia the majority of the trip. Carter, on the other hand, is more positive and outgoing with Mia, but there's a scene where he just kisses her and only afterwards asks for her consent. Both seem to struggle with grasping the severity of her situation and treating her like and normal person, but for different reasons. If this book didn't have any romance in it, it would have had a much higher rating but because of the romance and a few other things I couldn't give it over 4 stars. The Registry received 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The Collection by Shannon Stoker: After finishing the Registry I moved right on to the Collection, which takes place immediately after the end of the previous book. Mia, Andrew, and Carter crash land in Mexico where Carter and Andrew are taken and forced to become a part of this militia group and Mia has to save them. That is what the first half of the book is, and I definitely preferred the first half to the second half of this book. It had a clear story line and conflict and made room for character growth. Mia is a good protagonist who has evolved from sheltered girl to determined survivor to trained operative who is willing to put her self at risk to protect those she cares about. It was great to watch her transformation, but it was too rushed in this book and she succeeded too easily. Like all of her training takes place over just a few chapters which has a 3 week time period, and when she single handedly goes on her mission to save the boys from this militia group, she succeeds on the first try with no consequences. That felt both unrealistic and very rushed because I think if proper time and been given this could have been a really good story. I still don't really care about Andrew. I don't know what it is, maybe it's because I find him boring and a bit stupid at times. I think his experience with the militia was a frightening one that could have been an interesting narrative, but I think he was the wrong character to show that through and again it was just to little for me to work with. I won't say what happens in the second half, since the synopsis didn't really go into that, but the narrative takes a completely different turn. It becomes much more of stereotypical YA dystopian and there's a lot of filler and things that didn't make sense, which I didn't like. I will say that I love the headers that are put at the beginning of each chapter because it really gives insight about how the world few America and how America censors itself. I do think Mia and Andrew's relationship did develop, especially with them wanting to be open with each other and talking about their future together, but I still don't feel any pull for them and I don't really get why they are so attached to each other. The one thing I've saved til the end is Grant because his story stays the same throughout the whole novel, and I really like reading from his POV. While I still think he's a horrible, horrible person it's interesting getting into his mind. He is such a snob and considers everyone beneath him and violence is his solution to everything. We also learn a little bit about his past, which doesn't do anything to make him more sympathetic but it puts somethings into perspective. I like that his fatal flaw is definitely showing in this book and you know it's going to come back and bite him in the end. While there were parts of this book that I thought were good, I had a lot more issues with this book than I did the previous one and definitely felt like it had a bit of a slump going on. The Collection, sadly, received 2.5 out 5 stars.

The Legend of Holly Claus by Brittney Ryan: Oh what a disappoint this one was. Not as bad as Daughters of the Storm, but it was definitely one of the worst books I read this year. I used to read this one around Christmas, since it's about Santa Claus' daughter, but then I stopped doing that for a few years. With doing all the rereads this year I thought this one would be great to save for Christmas, so I did and while it definitely delivers on all the Christmas feels, it fails as a story. Basic premise is Santa has a daughter with “the most pure heart” but then this evil wizard, Herrikan, seals her heart in ice so that he can posses her heart one day and be free and sets a curse upon the Land of Immortals. Eventually Holly grows up and goes to New York to defeat Herrikan. The plot of this book makes little sense honestly. I liked the start with a child giving Santa a wish which allows him to have Holly, but it was fast downhill from there. I don't understand why Holly's heart was frozen. Was it to preserve it's purity? Was it to make it easier for her to die? I honestly don't know. Then there's the curse upon the Land of Immortals, where Santa rules, that prevents anyone from leaving. I've stated that I struggle with unlikeable characters, but here you have the exact opposite with a character that is just so perfectly pure that she comes off as annoying and stupid. I can't say I disliked Holly because she was put in a sympathetic situation, being isolated from everyone, but there were times I just wanted to smack her on the head she was being so obnoxious. Also during Holly's childhood she isolated because everyone was afraid of her even though they were explicitly told several times the curse lingers because of their fear. For immortal beings I can't say anyone was smart or even wise. Herrikan sucked as a villain, he was just so flat. The romance was one of the worst cases of Insta Love I have ever seen because it literally happens over one night. The ending was a total cop out, like everything is just magically perfect again. And this book made me dislike Santa Claus because he was such a smothering parent! Like how dare you make me dislike Santa! I think the ultimate message of the book was a good one and there were pretty picture in the book, but those were the only positive thing I can say about this book. The Legend of Holly Claus gets the dishonorable title of being one of the few books this year that I gave a 1 star to without DNFing.

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo:

I'll be slowly rereading all of the Grishaverse books to get ready for reading King of Scars, and I decided to start with this one since it's a cute filler book that has fairy tales set in the world of the grisha. All of the stories in this book are clearly inspired by several fairy tales that many people would be familiar with. I have to admit I didn't love this as much as I had when I first read it. Part of it was because there were stories that I didn't like, but part of it was also because I had a bad experience at a book signing I went to and I couldn't shake that feeling off. My favorite story was When Water Sang Fire, which is also the longest, but I also liked Little Knife, which is the shortest, because both display that Bardugo can produce a good complete story and have the pretty writing. My least favorites were the Solider Prince and the Witch of Duva. The Solider Prince was inspired by 2 great stories, but they just didn't mesh together well in this case. I'll get into more of the reasons I didn't like the Witch of Duva in my full review because there's a lot I have to say about that one. There's also a constant theme through out all of these stories, which is make the original villain sympathetic and make the typically most innocent person in the story the villain. That worked but only to an extent. I know Bardugo likes writing morally gray characters and sympathetic villains, but that doesn't always have to be the case. You can have a well written villain who is just bad. The Language of Thorns received 3.5 out 5 stars.
