March

The month is coming to an end. I'm yearning for warm days. My month in photography has been... interesting.

This month I picked up two new pieces of gear & rented one more:

Fujifilm 70-300mm f/4-5.6

My first super telephoto lens. It's been wild. I've always enjoyed telephoto photography, but the lenses are... large. This is a nice compromise lens. It's a bit slow, but it's long as hell & fits in my smallest camera bag. Love it. Here's some photos from it.

Kolari Vision IR Chrome Lite Filter

I've had a fairly busted full spectrum converted X-E1 for a while. I dunno why it took me so long to pick up an IR Chrome filter for it. IR Chrome is the whole reason I want an full spectrum camera.

My X-E1's electronic contacts don't work, so I can't use it with most of my lenses. I've landed on using a 7Artisans 35mm f/1.4 lens (only $60!) on it. The image quality isn't great, but it's been good to learn on.

IR photography gets better in the summer thanks to all the foliage. It's a bit blah right now. So, expect more of this soon.

Sony RX100 VII rental

I haven't rented much camera gear. I wanted to try something low stakes first. This month I headed to Pittsburgh for a PWHL hockey game. I couldn't bring my usual cameras into the arena. So, I decided a small RX100 would be a good pick. I rented it for the weekend and got some great pics. I don't really like the camera that much, so I wouldn't get it again. I definitely am gonna look into other compact cameras though.

Continuing to learn the X-T5

I picked up a Fuji X-T5 after using an X-T2 (and X-H1) for a long time. I've been loving the image quality of the camera and the IBIS. The photos look phenomenal. There's a learning curve to every camera & I knew the X-T2 like the back of my hand. With the X-T5 as my main camera, I'm sure it won't take long to be second nature.

Film

I'm currently trying to shoot through a box of Portra 400. 5 rolls in my Nikon F3. I've gotten through 2 1/2 rolls. Only one has been developed, but I still need to scan them. I haven't ever tried hard to learn a specific film before. Now that I have a solid film camera, though, it seems like the right time to do it.

Bangtan Weekly Report

Been a while. How are ya? We got a lot of shit going on and it has not been easy keeping up. I'll be glad when they are back together in 2025 so we can rest. Lol. Just kidding... I guess.

In a few hours we get Golden. I am excited to hear what Jungkook's chosen for his first album. I am excited to hear him explore these genres of songs. I am sure he's learned a lot during this process just as all the others have. He did a pre-release "press conference" and here is Dispatch's video of it: Watch Kookie's interview here.

He was very poised and articulate... dare I say "mature"? He is doing well. I'm very proud of Jungkook. He and his dance team are very excited to show us what they've created. I'm sure it will be amazing.

He mentioned a future Korean song as a gift? Don't tell me he means his gift to us before he leaves for MS...

Taemin with Jimin special appearance on Suchwita. Finally watched. The dynamic between Jimin and Taemin and Jimin and Yoongi was fascinating.

I don't know a lot about Taemin. Of course I've seen he and Jimin's performance from a while back. Taemin is a great performer. He seems like a very sincere person.

Jimin's Dior campaign.

So lovely that we finally get to see him in motion. Ever since Hobi's LV campaign with the bags, I've been wanting to see Dior or Tiffany take advantage of Jimin's fluid motion and FINALLY they woke up and showed him moving. Not a fan of the oversized knit vests but those suits are wonderful.

Namjoon... Mr. Black Void for an IG pfp... showing us some images from his trip to London.

Fun fact: That Kodak Portra 400 35mm film is anywhere from $15-$25 per roll of film... then you have to pay to have it developed.

His hair is dark in the image... not taken while he was in London... but when? Japan? That sand looks black. Ibusuki Beach? Except for that ship out there... hmmm.

His documentary will be coming down the line at some point, it will be jam-packed with his meanderings from these past two years. Maybe we'll find out where he's been.

The BTS documentary will be out in December. Our Christmas present. I'm looking forward to it. There will be new footage in it.

Tae channeling him some Elvis for Celine is interesting. I suppose this is from an upcoming campaign or magazine spread.

Jung Hoseok achieving his Corporal promotion ahead of time which I think means he would have three bars on his shirt pocket instead of the two as in this photo from his IG.

Less than a year left until Hobi's discharged and 7.5 months left before Jin is discharged.

It was the anniversary of The Astronaut this week. Can't believe this year just flew by. The reluctance to wish time to fly by but at the same time wanting it to slow down in order to live in the moment...we were so worried this time last year. We are making it through this ya'll. We are getting there.

Thank you so much!! <33 And yeah while it is a little trickier it's not much more difficult than any other type of film photography!

Also just fyi I don't mean to come off as like 'mansplaining' here I just wanna give tips to anyone who might read this and doesn't know the first thing about film haha:

I used my Minolta SR-1 camera and had the Ilford HP5+ film which I pushed +2 stops (so instead of setting my camera's ISO according to the film's own, I shot it +2 stops higher so 400->1600). It's a little more expensive to develop BUT it's a technique meant for low light. Basically it means purposefully underexposing photos while shooting, so that in development you'll compensate for that and use the film's ISO to the max, giving brighter photos. And the higher the ISO the more sensitive the film is to light which is what you need when there's a small amount of it. My camera is completely analog and doesn't have flash, which is all the more reason to push film as much as possible at concerts (altho remember to choose a 'fine grain' film bcs pushing adds a lot of noise & contrast to the finished photo and depending on what you aim for, a fine grain film will minimize that!). And the HP5+ is a 'fast' film so it'll react fast with whatever your max shutter speed is (mine was 500), which means you won't get a lot of blur and it'll capture that one millisecond of a moment you want (esp bcs concerts can have very high paced movement)

Hope this helped in ANY way but my dm's are always open if you wanna know more 🫶🏻 that was a lot more but it's like the days of research I did condensed into one rambly post lmao. Generally I found that most people liked using HP5+ at concerts, but if you want colour you can use Portra 400 pushed to 1600 for example! But generally if it says 'fine grain' and you push it a little you'll be good (tho I could definitely see the increased grain in my Helsinki photos where I was further away from the stage lol)

Here is an example of what I'm currently working on for the next few images: photograph of lean no shirt pirate pants boots face looks like (chris evans:.9, chris hemsworth:.25), long hair style, bodybuilder, on an 1800's pirate ship in the raging ocean, sea spray, mist, rain, wind blowing his hair, stormy, deep shadows,nikon d850 film stock photograph 4 kodak portra 400 camera f1.6 lens rich colors hyper realistic lifelike texture dramatic lighting cinestill 800, (night sky:0.8) Keep in mind that is the first step. I will iterate through it in img2img, maybe just paint certain areas to focus on. I upscale it and then bring it into Photoshop where I use the healing tools and Camera RAW filter to add the final polish.
