Who is Flounder?

Under the sea, this fish roams around with a rebellious, rambunctious, red-haired, mermaid… Except the mermaid is fabled, its lobster friend does not sing, and the fish is not as cute and fluffy as it seems to be. Flounder fish are actually a bit more plain than “The Little Mermaid” portrays them. Disney’s “Flounder” has a misleading name, as he is actually based off of a tropical fish. The real flounders are flatfish that fill the ocean and people’s stomachs, so it would be a good idea to make sure that you all know what they are like.
Flounder fish belong to a variety of families, but they all belong to the suborder Pleuronectidae. They are found swimming in all parts of the world, floundering in places from the seafloor to docks and coral reefs. Flounders are carnivorous, so they tend to eat small fish, crustaceans, or bristle worms. They do fall prey to larger animals, such as sharks and eels. During the mating season, which is usually the warmest time of the year, females can lay up to 100,000 eggs. After fertilization, they hatch a few weeks later.
Flounders are very interesting when it comes to developing. When first born, they have eyes on either side of their heads. It stays that way until their juvenile stages, which happens a few days after hatching. They start to flatten, elongate, and lose their swimming bladders. The swimming bladder is used for buoyancy, in order for a fish to be able to float. Weird right? They lose the ability to float. It’s okay though. Mother Nature makes up for it by evolving them to migrate an both eyes to one side of its body. Yeah, so now it looks like a child’s drawing. The side with the eyes becomes the top of the fish and starts to darken, while the colors on the underside (now the bottom of the fish) starts to fade. This is because the flounder fish lay on the seafloor and camouflage with the ground in order to catch prey. The picture at the top is a clear example of this. It is pretty weird how the world works.
Flounder fish are… odd creatures to say the least. They may be lopsided and laid-back, but they are still lovable as ever. It’s too bad that the population is decreasing because of pollution and game fishing. Oh well.

Small whole fish like lemon or Dover sole make perfect individual portions in this special seafood supper for two. Lemon sole is a misnomer since it's neither a real sole, nor does it taste of lemon. It's actually a flounder (the family that includes plaice and turbot).
