You’ve spent all dam day slaving away in that kitchen of yours to make sure Ransom had a decent home cooked meal to come back to after a long day working with Harlan, and what does he do? “I was just out with Harvey” the way his shoulders move up as he shrugs only seems to bother you all the more. His lack of care for his actions have always created issues for your relationship but this takes the cake.

To some, your pouty and bratty behaviour may seem pathetic and unnecessary, but to you it’s more than him missing dinner. It’s about the fact that he always seems to let you down, over and over.

“Oh so you prefer his company over mine then? Because i made us a lovely meal so that we could eat together after a week of not being able to and this is the thanks i get? For my so called boyfriend to be swanning off with the master of one night stands” your voice is low, your stare dark and angry, your stance even more so and he can definitely see how badly he’s fucked up.

However, if you know Ransom well enough, then you can certainly see his change in attitude coming a mile off.

“You’d better watch your fucking mouth” he barks, his finger pointed directly in your face as he stalks closer to you. You find yourself stepping back, intimidation controlling you.

“Or what? You gonna make me? Judging by the way you’ve been acting you don’t have a leg to stand on” you say matter of factly as you shake your head in disgust at his nerve. How dare he boss you around when he’s the one who’s been out of line all this time.

“Maybe i will” he pokes his chin out as he stands tall, hands by his sides. He looks awfully confident as he inches closer. His index finger slips underneath your chin as he forces you to look directly into his menacing eyes.

You feel your breath catch in this moment. The knowledge of him doing whatever he wants to do to you just because he can is causing your entire body to shiver with anticipation. Despite how he makes you feel sometimes, you’re a sucker for him and everything he does.

He says jump, you say how high.

“What?” you murmur, wanting him to use his words just like he always makes you do.

“I said, maybe i will make you. Bet you’d love that, slut” you wince at the horrid nickname. It’s moments like these when you always try your hardest to avoid thinking about how his degradation of you makes you feel, your mind is objecting but your body is giving him the green light.

suggestions/ideas for fanfic, from a writer who learned this shit the hard way

does your fanfic have a very specific setting/things characters do? have the main character (reader, OC, whatever, i will be referring to them as the MC) do something adjacent to that.

ex. your story takes place during a war and your love interest is a soldier? make the MC a translator or have them work on the supply line, to give contrast to the story while keeping them in the action

ex. your love interest is a chess grandmaster? have the MC be a journalist/artist/sculptor! that gives you a chance for the love interest to teach them chess and for the MC to learn more about the love interest

you want to do a coffee shop au? have the love interest work across the street, at a bakery

so, you’ve decided to do one of the above or chosen a random hobby for your character but you don’t know how to write it? look up technique!

journalist route? of course you know how to do that, you’re doing that by writing the fic! just have the MC describe what’s happening in front of them, and you’re golden

translator? best bet would probably be wikipedia. it would also help to do general research into the language you’re translating, and if you’re having the MC speak the language, you could either translate it then and there (“they looked up at the LI, smiling. “Vi we hvem vi er,” they say, “We are who we are.”) or leave a key at the end of your fic

artist (painter/drawing route)? watch a youtube video on someone painting. it’s literally that easy. shit, the best help would be Bob Ross, because he actually explains what the hell he’s doing and with which brush.

sculptor? youtube, baby! some people do step by steps of what they’re doing, so try and find something like that

knitting? youtube, again. there are a ton of step by step tutorials for how to do certain patterns, sweaters, hats, scarfs, and more! plus, looking up these tutorials make you more knowledgeable of a person, and it also really helps with Jeopardy!

you don’t know whether or not your x reader is inclusive enough? get vague, babes, but not too vague!

use they/them pronouns (unless you’re posting multiple versions for the fic) for the MC, or write in the second person, and instead of describing things about the way the MC looks, pay more attention to how the MC feels

don’t! assume! race! you never know who is going to read your fic. don’t use phrases such as “their face paled” or “cheeks flushed”. instead, use “their blood ran cold” or “they felt their face heat up”, it’s so much more inclusive and in my experience, it leads to better writing because you spend more time explaining the why those things happened

for the love of all things holy, don’t let your love interest run their hands through the MC’s hair. you can’t do that with all hair types. i understand, it’s a tender thing, but you can show tenderness without having that happen. instead, rubbing circles onto the back of hands while they’re being held, back rubs, shoulder touches, forehead kisses, cooking for each other, have the MC play with the love interest’s hair (if possible)

if you’re writing a character who is neurodivergent, disabled, trans, LGBTQ+, mentally ill, etc. and you’re not any of those things, please, for the love of fuck, do proper research. as a trans gay man with depression and anxiety, i cannot tell you how many fics i’ve read that don’t portray any of those things right. please, do research, talk to actual people who have any of the above mentioned, and have someone beta your fic.

don’t! assume! religion! yes, Christmas fics are cute, but people celebrate more than Christmas! Hanukkah fics are cute! Kwanza fics are cute! shit, just snowed in, cuddled up together during December fics with no religious holiday implied are cute!

don’t assume size! please! i cannot tell you how many times i’ve seen plus-sized readers in comment sections that say “this man could not lift me up” or “fic: he picked me up easily me: no he did not” and it’s sad because plus-sized readers exist! how do you avoid that happening to your fic? don’t include size unless you are writing a specifically plus-sized reader fic. that’s it. that’s literally it. also, don’t include how tight or loose fitting clothes are, it’s generally good to stay away from clothes unless they’re important to the story.

include personality traits instead of physical traits, especially when the LI is talking to the MC (“i love the way that you laugh” or “you always think about the best in people” or perhaps “you get so worried over me, i’m fine, really”)

“i’ll never be as good as *insert writer here* :( “ yes, babe, you will. you know why? because every writer is different. we each have our own set of skills, so play to them! also, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!

you love to write whump? write that fucking whump baby. be the best whump writer you can be

you love to write fluff but you wanna give a go at angst? do it! play around with it! no one said you can’t have both in the same fic

you only know how to write smut but you want to get better at fic overall? start with the build up to the smut, and go backwards from there, the why the two characters are engaging in smutty activities, the how, the when and where and what got them to that point. the better the build up, the more satisfying the smut.

not comfortable with writing smut/ you tried but smut isn’t your thing? then don’t write it. very classic case of “My Kink Is Not Your Kink” and “Don’t Like It? Don’t Read It”, except it’s the writers edition

if you are really good at writing emotions, but terrible at intersections, or vice versa, read fics that have good interactions/emotions, see what that writer does, and try to replicate it with your own spin on it. read from multiple writers, find the ones you like the best, and why you like those the best, and then do what they do in your own way

i hope these helped you, because i had to learn this shit the hard way. feel free to reblog and add your own advice, because i’m not perfect and if i left out an important piece of advice, add it!

Do you have any thoughts on why the novel might be so popular among lgbt people despite (sometimes quite obviously) being written by a straight women for straight women. I think this is quite evident in for example the sex scenes

Why do I think the novel is so popular amongst LGBTQ+ people despite being written by a straight woman for straight women? Simple! It’s a good story and the characters are complex and intriguing. No piece of media is ever perfect, so it simply comes down to whether an individual feels the positive aspects of the media outweigh the negative aspects of the media. Are there problematic aspects within the novel? Of course! But that doesn’t mean the novel as a whole should be disregarded. You can consume media while still being critical of it, just like you can like a character while acknowledging that they’re not a good person. LGBTQ+ people, like everyone else, value a good story and interesting characters, so even if there are aspects of the story that we dislike, we may still stick around if we think it’s worth it! Also, I think there’s a shortage of stories like “Mo Dao Zu Shi” where you have LGBTQ+ characters whose sexuality isn’t the focus of the story. Yes, Wangxian are soulmates and very much in love, but that isn’t the whole point. You have a delightful bundle of politics, magic, familial ties, concepts of right and wrong, mystery, etc etc that also features a beautiful love story between two men. I guess my point is, LGBTQ+ people are flawed just like everyone else and sometimes we consume content even if we don’t agree with every part of it.

I’ve avoided getting involved in any discourse surrounding the various versions of MDZS because I wanted to keep this blog drama free, however I would like to take this chance to offer my own thoughts on the “problematic” aspects of the novel. Before I get into it, I just want to make three things clear: 1) I’m white, 2) I’m not mlm, I’m a lesbian, and 3) I’ve only read the second half of the novel and honestly I can’t remember too much of the specifics. The relevance of my opinion on the matter, therefore, is limited and my words should be read with this fact in mind. I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and feelings on this matter, so do feel free to either leave a comment or reblog and add your two-cents. All I ask is that we keep it respectful so this can continue to be an enjoyable space for all fans.

I’ve been going through the untamed’s tumblr tag daily since the start of this blog in August 2019, so I’ve seen the whole spectrum of opinions on this matter. Some people feel very strongly that some of the ways in which MXTX writes particular aspects of the novel are “problematic,” some people are indifferent, and others feel that criticism of MXTX’s writing comes from a lack of knowledge of Chinese culture (particularly LGBTQ+ Chinese culture). (I remember seeing a post touching upon this last matter, but I didn’t save it, so unfortunately I can’t link it.)

I think the two most common criticisms of the novel that I have come across pertain to matters of consent and the imposing of heteronormative concepts onto Wangxian. Again, I want to stress that I haven’t read the novel in its entirety and my memory of it is foggy. Talking about consent first, some felt the scene in the novel where LWJ kisses an unexpecting blindfolded WWX was a big no no, while others thought it was a very sweet, romantic scene. (To give context for those who have only seen the drama, this scene would have been placed in episode 25 had they included it). For this matter, I’m of the belief that consent is a must. Regardless of whether WWX enjoyed the kiss, the fact stands that no one is entitled to another’s body, and this is why consent is, in my eyes, non-negotiable. For those who have no problem with this scene, I do think it is worth considering how you would feel about this scene had it involved, say, Jin Zixuan kissing a blindfolded Jiang Yanli. If that had been the case, I do think the majority of readers would have found the scene in poor taste (I could be wrong, though!). I will say that the trope of the forceful kiss is extremely common and can be found in every genre; it’s definitely not restricted to LGBTQ+ couples. For the aforementioned reason, I don’t like the forceful kiss scenario irregardless of the genders of the people involved. I do think writing such scenes for LGBTQ+ couples in particular can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, particularly that LGBTQ+ people have no respect for personal boundaries and can’t control their physical desires. I think the situation is doubly bad if the person who is being kissed is “not yet gay,” because again, it perpetuates the idea of the big bad gay person and the innocent “straight” person who is at the whims of said big bad gay.

Moving on to WWX and LWJ’s sex life, I have seen multiple people in the tag mentioning WWX having a “rape kink” and their discomfort with this fact. Logically, I understand that we are all allowed, as human beings with different tastes and preferences, to enjoy the things that bring us pleasure (excluding certain obvious things). That being said, I do not personally enjoy rape fantasies in my media and try to stay far away from it. As I mentioned, we are all welcome to our own tastes and preferences, but I do think it is important that we realize that we are all also the product of our environments. Things, including kinks, do not exist in vacuums, and therefore they must arise as a result of some mixture of external and internal forces. Does MXTX giving WWX a rape kink automatically make her demon spawn? Not really. Does MXTX giving WWX a rape kink add anything to his character or the story? Also not really. All this being said, I do think LGBTQ+ media is oversaturated with consent issues and I’d personally like to see this come to an end, because once again, it perpetuates harmful stereotypes that do have a real impact on LGBTQ+ individuals.

As for the imposing of heteronormative concepts onto Wangxian, I think the biggest complaint I’ve seen is about WWX being referred to as the “mom” or the “wife” within the Wangxian couple. I would like to state here that this may be a situation in which cultural differences come into play. Additionally, because the novel is not originally written in English, it may be a case of telephone in which the true meaning becomes distorted as it is translated from one language to another and then to another and so on and so forth. Therefore, I am going to proceed with my thoughts on the matter in a more generalized way. For me, this is a big pet peeve of mine, to the point where I will not reblog content that refers to any of the male characters as “mom” or “wife.” My reasoning is simple: WWX is a man, so he would be someone’s “dad” or “husband,” not their “mom” or “wife.” I know from first-hand experience that non-LGBTQ+ people will often try to place a gay couple within a heterosexual context to make it easier for them to process how two women or two men could be together. I understand the reasoning behind this way of thinking, but that does not mean this way of thinking should be encouraged. It’s bad enough that non-LGBTQ+ couples are ensnared in an endless maze of gendered ways of being and thinking - let’s not force that on LGBTQ+ couples as well. My other issue is that the words “mom” and “wife” not only have gendered connotations, but they have implicit sexual connotations as well. In this context, “mom” and “wife” are just another way of saying “bottom.” Just think about it; nobody’s out there calling LWJ “mom” or “wife.” The whole idea of “top” and “bottom” in gay media is so……..it’s almost like an obsession? And for those of you who may be thinking it’s not that deep and has no bearing on real life….I really wish that were true. Go look at the comments section of any gay couple’s youtube video and you will invariably find someone asking who is the top and who is the bottom. That’s invasive as fuck, y’all, and you don’t see that shit on straight couple’s videos (again, because the assumption is that women are always in the submissive, therefore there’s no need to ask because it’s assumed the answer will always be that the woman “bottoms” and the man “tops”). All this being said, I can only speak about this matter from my viewpoint as a lesbian. If one day I were to get married, I wouldn’t want people referring to my wife as my “husband,” because the whole point is that we’re both the wife! I know there isn’t one rule/mindset that applies to all gay people, so I would love to hear others’ feelings on this matter.

Finally, I would also like to briefly touch upon Mo Xuanyu, who we don’t really get to see in the drama. I don’t know whether LWJ or WWX ever explicitly state their sexualities or which gender(s) they’re attracted to, but I’m pretty sure Mo Xuanyu is explicitly stated to be strictly into men (please correct me if I’m wrong!). I do wonder what MXTX’s intentions were (if there were any) when she decided to make Mo Xuanyu gay, because what I’ve grasped of his characterization is that he is written similarly to other gay male characters that give the impression they were created by checking off a list of every popular stereotype about gay men. I guess I’m just curious, as someone who knows very little about Mo Xuanyu, how others felt about his character in terms of complexity and stereotypes.

It still is not fully completed, as it is sitting at basically 99.99% complete, but I will still release it at is and give out an update once it is officially at 100%. The missing lines would be plot-related, but given that said lines only amount to 20 out of 2700+, you should still be able to make out what’s going on from context.

1. Can I translate your subtitles to another language? Absolutely! But please keep the credits in the file and link back to this post.

2. But I don’t have the video! What do I do? You can buy the DVD, grab it off a friend, or search the wild wild web for it. It’s out there somewhere.

3. So I have the video now. What next? Download VLC media player, play the video, right click and choose “Subtitle”>Add Subtitle File, add the sub file and voila! (or if you make the subtitle and video file names identical, the subs should automatically show up in the drop-down menu. If it doesn’t work, please consult google)

cristalcarrington’s icon tutorial!

a little treat for day 28 of my filmuary challenge!

i’ve honestly lost count of which one this is, but welcome to another icon tutorial! here i’m going to breaking down my icon creation process step by step. i currently am a mac user and all my previous tutorials have been windows orientated (which unfortunately were all lost in the great url loss of 2017). my process hasn’t changed much since then, but i have picked up quite a few new go-to tricks and i’ll be sharing these tips in this post!

anyway! here’s what you’ll need-

photoshop (i currently use photoshop cc so be aware that options and tools may not translate onto other programs/versions of ps) and yes, i do pay for my photoshop but if you’re in need of a decent, safe download i might be able to point you in the right direction so hmu

patience (believe me some of these icons have taken me a painfully long time to create) just don’t feel discouraged if things don’t work out perfectly right away!

a creative mind. please be aware that this tutorial is only for educational purposes. under no circumstance directly replicate my icons! the one involved in this tutorial is clearly fair game, but please try to take creative liberty with your work. what i’ve found a lot of fun is incorporating bits and pieces of what other people do into my own work.

starting off

so today, i’m going to tackle a screencap for my ongoing filmuary challenge!

i tend to get my screencaps from google, so for this i literally just googled “mirror mirror screencaps” and selected a image from google images. when i’m not feeling lazy, i tend to go through the whole movie (great screencaps can be found at screencapped or kissthemgoodbye)

my first move is to open the screencap in the photoshop on it’s default canvas. the one i’ve chosen is normally the sort of screencap i’d go for-- one that has a central focus on the character and allows me to get a solid outline.

i tend to avoid screencaps that cut off the top of the characters head. i also tend to gravitate towards scenes that look easy to colour; if you choose overly saturated screencaps or screencaps that are too dark/light, then you will find it difficult to colour while conscious of the screencap quality.

base colouring

i then duplicate the screencap.

and then i set that duplicated layer to screen.

i like to make my icons super bright so i repeat this. it will vary depending on how dark the scene is. i prefer to do this to the screencaps as i find that it preserves the quality of the cap.

alternatively, you can use a psd-- my favourite as mentioned in previous tutorial is @blairsfelicity‘s icon psd which you can find in her tutorial here. my new method is just a whole lot lazier and i’ve been really enjoying the way my icons have turned out.

outlines

now here comes the menial part-- time for the outline.

remember to add a layer (unless you want to break your own heart by doing it directly onto the cap and being forced to start over (which i would NOT recommend by the way, crying over a screencap is as demoralising as it sounds)).

i vary between using the pen tool and a brush/eraser for my backgrounds. i like to shake it up depending on what i feel like doing or what the screencap would best fit. it also completely depends on whether i’m feeling particularly lazy or not-- if i have time to burn, i’ll use a brush. if i’m in a rush, i’ll use the polygonal lasso tool and refine my selection area with masks.

in this tutorial (due to my boredom of doing things over and over, this beautiful filmuary) i’m opting for the brush method. but if you want me to talk through polygonal lasso process which is a lot quicker and really streamlines the process-- then feel free to drop me a message and i’ll be happy to make another talk through.

i like to use a brush for my erasing, on 30-50% hardness. i like to use a diffused/low hardness so my icon doesn’t look too sharp and the background and model seem to go with each other more. i’ll go for a small brush size when it comes to detailing (for example, when it comes to profiles, hair etc).

once i’ve outlined the model, i select the area around her with the magic wand tool and fill in the selected area with either a brush or a fill layer. then i merge the outline layer with the new colour layer.

(these two examples are from another icon process bc im dumb and forgot to take screenshots)

there will be a full little line around the model once you’ve merged the layers. i just tend to fill it in manually with a brush.

now here comes the fun part-- the colouring.

make those colours pop!

as you can see, the screencap has a lot of colours, but we need to make them pop. i take one of the colours, make a new layer and just paint until it’s vibrant and bold. once you’re happy with your colour selection, set the layer to soft light and adjust accordingly.

i tend to go for softer brushes when it comes to facial features. the lips, to make them a darker colour, i opt to set the layer style to multiply instead of soft light, and paint over the lip shape with a light pink/red.

i always like to highlight the eyes to aid contrast in the screencap. i also like to fill all eyebrows in with a black (set on soft light) as well as the lashline, just to add further dimension and contrast to the model.

prepping the icon

this is what my screencap looks like with the colouring complete. as you can see, each colour is on a separate layer. this is so i can adjust/duplicate each colour accordingly. once i’m happy, i place everything into a group together.

i make all of my icons on a 100x100px canvas.

i like to edit the screencaps on their original canvas as it helps with the quality of the screencap as well as allowing me to outline accurately.

i just drag the files from one tab into another.

and then you can size it appropriately.

my next step is to select the same colour as the background and to paint over the white strip at the top of the icon. i do this directly onto my outline and then merge the two together. you now have the foundations of your icon to build onto!

final touches in the colouring department

there is honestly no direction that i could give you when it comes to these final colouring steps.

i like my icons to be very bright, so i target the contrast with levels and brightness/contrast layers. I like to also turn up the vibrancy to make the colours pop even more.

my preference is for the skin to be very neutral, so i try to combat the saturation of the skin with colour balance and selective colour layers (as well as another step i will explain later in the tutorial)

as you can see above, i place the final colouring all underneath the background layer as this makes it easier for me to place textures later on.

if you have problems with the model’s skin appearing too saturated, i’d recommend taking a solid fill layer of a black/white/grey and setting it to colour. place that layer just above the screencap and adjust it so it combats any saturation you might be experiencing.

textures and finishing touches!

clipping masks are honestly a god send for me. you can find them by right-clicking on the layers and selecting clipping masks. as you can see above, i use clipping masks to place a green texture on top of the icon’s background. i then layer above that by using further clipping masks, adding other textures and even layers to adjust the colouring of the background.

my favourite place to find textures are livejournal and deviantart-- soaked on livejournal is my go-to at the moment and i really enjoy evey-v’s icon textures. i also have my own resouces/textures that you can find here!

once i’m happy with how the icon looks, i copy all of the layers together and paste them under the background.

this is a super lazy way of sharpening the icon-- an alternative method is explained really well by @jennifergarner (aka the god of icons) on her icon faq page. i have used this in the past but after filmuary i’ve found a few little tricks.

i then just sharpen the icon and adjust the opacity of the sharpened layer depending on my preferences.

and then there we go---

my chosen export settings are just to go for PNG every time. this helps preserve the quality of the icon and help it look super clean and tidy for whoever wants to use it.

Information:

First of all I just want to say that I am NOT a professional and have no clue what I am actually doing here. There might be ways to do this that are way easier and more efficient, but this is the only way I know based on my self taught experience.

• You need: Photoshop (I am using CS5.1) My Photoshop is unfortunately not in English but I will try my best to find the accurate translations.

• This is about: Creating a picture/gif with an animated background (as a mobile theme header for example).

Under the cut you will find a very detailed tutorial on how to create the example on top so please like/reblog if you found this helpful and don’t claim as yours!

Before we start : The size of the mobile header is a 16:9 ratio (640 pixel width and 360 pixel height for example) and the upload limit is unfortunately only 2 megabytes for gifs (for a normal post it’s 3MB) - please keep that in mind.

1. Building a base

First we need a base aka a background to add the sparkle to (or whatever effect you would like). You can settle for a monochrome background, a colour gradient or a picture, just choose whatever you like, but keep in mind that the effect might look better on a darker background. In my example I am only using a part of the Dispatch Facebook Header with Taehyung on it.

So I open a new document in Photoshop with a transparent background and a size within the 16:9 ratio. I personally like to start with a bigger base and then resize it in the end but of course you can start with 640x360 px as well. For the rest I use the default settings.

Now that you have your naked base you can build your background however you like it. In my case I just drag the photo from the folder directly onto my new Photoshop document and place it in a way I like it.

2. Adding the effect

Time to search for an effect you like. It has to be gif! On Tumblr you can find a ton of these searching the ‘texture gif’ or ‘sparkle/stars’ tag. If you find a transparent one then congrats - it would be ideal. I am quite picky and favour the endless loop ones, so that there is no harsh cut in the sprakle if you get what I’m trying to say here. I can highly recommend the ones from LEMAT WORKS, they have literally every kind of sparkle you can wish for.

When you found the one you like best, open it in Photoshop and check how many frames it has and how much delay each and every frame has.

Then you go back to your first base and duplicate your frame until it has the same amout of frames as the sparkle gif. Then also change the delay to the same amount and don’t forget to change the loop from ‘Once’ to ‘Forever’.

When both are the exact same you have to change both of them individually into smart objects. For doing so you select all of your frames on the bottom row and click on the timeline button. Then also select all the layers on the right side and click on ‘Filter’ → ‘Convert to Smart Object’.

Now everything should be compressed into only one layer. To get your sparkling effect onto your base you just have to pick the first tool on the left side and simply take the whole sparkle gif and drag it onto the background document.

With pressing ‘CTRL’ + ‘T’ (for Apple users ‘CTRL’ → ‘ Command ⌘’) you can now resize the sparkle gif to your liking and change the opacity. Again, the darker the whole picture, the better the effect. I changed the opacity to 40% in my case. Now is also a moment to add any kind of other filters if you want to change the colour, put on a gradient or add something to the background, you do you.

Then you just have to save it as a gif. So keep in mind that you can’t just save it normally like a picture, you have to save it under ‘Save for web and devices’. Also check again that your Looping Options are on ‘Forever’ Photoshop likes to change this when you work with a smartobject.

3. Adding the main part

Since the base is done we can open the saved gif and change it into a smart object again to be able to work with it further. Now we have to think about what we want to put on top of it. Keeping in mind that we don’t want to cover up our wonderful background we need a png, or cut it out ourself. In my case I just crappily cut out Tae from the original picture and then drag and dropped it onto our background (just like we did with the texture gif earlier).

Now you can resize and place your png to your liking again with ‘CTRL’ + ‘T’. Of course you can place as much different things as you like, just take care that the layers on the right side don’t get mixed up and something ends up under your background. Again you can add any kind of filters here, don’t hold back, but don’t forget that the filter is going to change the background now too. So if you want to add any kind of filters only to the things on top you have to do that beforehand seperately.

At this point you can go crazy with your creativity and do whatever you want and save when you feel like it’s done. Remember to save as a gif and that your limit is 2 megabytes for Tumblr to accept it as a header!

4. (Optional) Creating a transition

Personally I like it when my header has a nice transition to the mobile theme main colour, so I take it a step further. There are many different ways to get a transition and you can just search on google for a ‘border png’ and slap it on your gif or create your own. I just personally like clouds and think they fit well to this dreamy vibe, so i just drag and drop a cloud png onto what I have done so far. Again resizing and placing it to my liking. I ended up using the same cloud twice, layering it for a better opacity.

To get a smoother colour in the clouds I use the ‘Gradient Tool’ (I sadly don’t know if this the right name) on the left toolbar. You can change the settings of this tool to your liking as always but the default settings work just fine. You can choose the colour in the upper right and double click on the left square to get the exact colour you want in the pop up.

Now you have to move the cursor from the bottom of your picture upwards to the top of your clouds to get a smoother colour gradient. You can repeat this as often as you want and play with the opacity of the clouds to get a little more dimension until you are happy with it. To wrap it all up I put a soft colour filter over everything (except for one cloud) and saved it.

And that’s it, we’re done!

If there are still questions that Google can’t answer I will try my best to help you out, I am only self taught as well after all.
