Books by Black Authors for Black History Month!
I wanted to share a list of books I love and books that I'm looking forward to reading that are by Black authors in acknowledgement of Black History Month. I feel like a lot of my fellow readers (especially my fellow white readers) always go into a, kind of, reading slump in February and I don't know if that's because the month of January is just ten years long that February feels like a hangover or if it's because they feel the desire to read books by Black authors but then the majority of what is marketed is usually books that are steeped in trauma or nonfiction books. And, like, yeah, nonfiction books are so important but when they're the only kind of book marketed it can make finding the other kinds of books that much harder but I believe that if you read the fun books and the happy books and the fantasy books it will make you want to seek out the nonfiction resources. I'm blabbering so long story short, I thought I would make a little list to do some of the legwork for my fellow readers to find stories that they can check out.
I used GoodReads links (and one StoryGraph) link, you can choose who to purchase from yourself (although I will suggest BookShop.org as your purchase does go towards indie bookstores, I also really like the Libby App which is just your library and it works with your Kindle/Nook/Kobo/iPad). All authors that I have included in this are American or have strong ties to the USA which is why I did not include authors such as Bolu Babalola, Talia Hibbert, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie but I do highly recommend checking them out if you haven't because they do write gorgeously.
Kennedy Ryan has an extensive backlog and beautiful writing, beautiful prose. She had a book called Before I Let Go (Skyland #1) come out in November 2022, it is a second chance romance between a married couple. It has been on my shelf forever, the cover is beautiful and I've heard nothing but truthfully incredible things. I have listened to snippets of the audiobook but keep putting off getting the actual audiobook because Kennedy is the kind of author I want to read the grammar, syntax, wording of everything from. This book actually got optioned to be adapted into a television show and there's a second Skyland book coming out in March called This Could Be Us that has the ARC readers going wild.
Jasmine Guillory is one of my favorite authors. She is a Bay Area native and has a law degree from Stanford. Not only do I think that she writes beautifully but I cannot even describe to you the way that I kick my little feet and twirl my hair. I feel like my favorite of hers changes. Up until a few weeks ago, I would've told you that Olivia Monroe in Party of Two was my favorite Jasmine girly but I listened to Royal Holiday to kick off my reading for January and Vivian Forest is such a beautiful character. She's a 56 year old Black woman who is a veteran social worker who thinks it's too late for her on several fronts and then she gets swept off her feet while on a vacation with her daughter AND THE ROYAL FAMILY. What?! I also think that Jasmine writes, like.... character appropriate sex scenes if that makes sense. Like, Vivian's scenes are more reserved than Olivia's were, Vivian's more closed door than Olivia's were. She also has a Beauty and the Beast inspired book called By The Book and I kept texting my friend the entire way through and then made her buy a copy so she could text me right back with all her thoughts. Amazing. I love her.
You want cozy fantasy romance with monsters and happy Black women being loved by their hot monster lovers? Kimberly Lemming has GOT YOU COVERED.
Plugging my new author friend P.J. Leigh and her book Olawu. She actually responded to my request for some indie author recs on Threads and sent me a copy of Olawu that will be here on Friday and I'm so excited. She describes it as: "Set in precolonial East Africa with romance, action, sisterhood, found family, and a feisty but flawed female lead." I cannot wait to dig into this one.
Another author who messaged me is indie author Quiana Glide. Her bio is that she is an unabashed fangirl and her books feature pregnancy trope, cosplay, professional wrestlers and cafe owners solving murders. Her books sound fucking great and they are available on Kindle Unlimited for my KU girlies (gender neutral).
Celestine Martin messaged me as well and she writes paranormal romance with Black witches, emo mermen and fae princes. I tripped over myself running to my Libby app to place a hold on the audiobook.
25 to Love! by Joye Johnson is another one available on Kindle Unlimited for my KU girlies (gender neutral). The synopsis is: "TV's hottest dating show is '25 to Love!'. To nab a guy from her past, Lola signs on as the token girl of color. All's fair in love and ratings--can a week on TV get Lola closer to the one that got away?" You know what I love? Second chance romances, besties, that's right.
Splinter by Jasper Hyde was another I was recommended. Jasper writes paranormal, LGBTQ+ books. Jasper Hyde is a pen name for Georgina Kiersten who also goes by Rian Fox. The pen name denotes the subgenre that they write. Georgina does go by they/them pronouns and writes plus sized rep and neurodivergent rep too.
Kelly Cain. That's it. That's the tweet. THE EVERHEART BROTHERS SERIES????? If you know anything about me, you know that I have a hearing issue and so I've used audiobooks before but I never really clicked with them or got the hype. Turns out I had boring ass narrators (look I did the audio version of a lot of nonfiction books I had to read about old dead white guys in college so of course I had that feeling). THE EVERHEART BROTHERS AUDIOBOOKS ARE WHAT CHANGED ME. Deanna Anthony, the narrator, is so engaging and I didn't feel like I was listening to an audiobook, I felt like I was sitting across the table at brunch having a gossip session with my bestie. If you read it and you didn't like it, that's fine, but I didn't lie to you and enjoyment of art is subjective but also you're wrong and argue with a wall.
I've been seeing a lot of talk lately about Pride & Protest by Nikki Payne. This is a Pride & Prejudice and one of the reviews says, "If you ever wanted P&P to feel more like watching a swoony, steamy episode of Insecure, this is the book for you."
Currently, I am reading You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi. It deals with themes of grief and romance and also bisexual representation. Absolutely beautiful prose. Akwaeke is Nigerian and has been in the USA since college. They are non-binary and go by they/them pronouns.
I also cannot end this list without mentioning Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. This follows three generations of a southern Black family in the neighborhood of Douglass in Memphis, TN (I was born a couple miles away in Raleigh) . Now, this book does have quite a few trigger warnings that I won't put here but I do encourage you to READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS before you purchase this book as it does deal with some pretty heavy subject matter.
I'm also going to end this by saying to keep an eye out for anything done by my best friend, the person who I have shared so many amazing, beautiful, life changing experiences with ALL OVER THE WORLD for the last fourteen years: Isana Skeete (Isana does not use pronouns). If you look at the GoodReads account for Isana that I linked, you'll see lists made with recommendations of books with queer POC rep and asexuality representation.

imagine you being sick at the beginning of your relationship. and it's not happening often, but when it does it’s pretty bad. and you're feeling terrible and Jude is being the most caring boy in the whole wide world :( he'd cook something for you or help his mum with making the soup that she was always giving him when he was younger and was sick. he'd run you long, warm baths. he'd make sure that you're warm in bed and take your medicine. he'd just take care of you :(((
PS. I hope you'll feel better soon Leigh <3
he’d be the best nurse ever :(( literally wldnt let u move off the sofa or out of bed bc he just wants u to rest so he brings u everything u need, extra blankets and pillows, hot water bottle, hot drinks and water, soup or ur favourite snacks, medicine just everything that will make u feel better. and if u had a fever he’d make u get in the shower to sweat it out and wld put ur pjs including his hoodie into the dryer so they’re nice and warm when u get out. helps brush ur hair if u need him to or just gets u dry and helps u get dressed before making u get back into bed. definitely still snuggles with u even tho ur complaining he’ll get sick bc he just wants u to be comfy

HS Journalism: Good Luck Charlie: It's Christmas Review (Feature)
★★★★☆ (4 out of 5)
Good Luck Charlie is an American sitcom that ran on the Disney Channel from April 4, 2010, to February 16, 2014. The show had four seasons and one movie. The movie, “Good Luck Charlie: It's Christmas!” is not as well known as other holiday movies to watch with family and friends.
The movie follows the Duncan family of six as they plan to spend a Christmas with grandparents in Palm Springs, Ca. It is the family's first Christmas away from their home in Denver. Things go awry when daughter Teddy Duncan (Bridgit Mendler), and mother Amy Duncan (Leigh-Allyn Baker), get separated from their family after Teddy gives up her seat on the plane in exchange for a free plane ticket.
The movie is a delight to watch, however it comes with minor issues. The movie doesn’t truly feel like cinema as it tries to feel like an episode of the show instead of a separate entity. It does take certain elements away from the sitcom formula such as the laugh track and natural lighting. The movie is clearly made for fans of the show as it jumps straight into the movie without introducing the cast to those who haven’t seen the show. The movie is supposed to take place between seasons 2 and 3, which might be why writers or the director chose to tell the narrative that way. It doesn’t truly take away from the experience and provides a unique style of movies that isn’t quite modern anymore.
The biggest issue that stands out is the acting. For example, Baker doesn’t truly have good acting in her role as the mother compared to the rest of the cast. It seems to exaggerate her personality from her show. In the show, Amy is loving and caring about her family while being very overworked. However, at times she is self-centered and does try to be the star of the family most of the time. Yet in the movie she is very aggressive, and her side of being self-centered is over exaggerated at certain points in the movie. Out of all the characters, she feels out of character until half way through the movie.
Teddy’s character seems flat for a movie character up until the end of the second act. While her character is the same as in the show, she doesn’t really progress over the course of the movie other than a few instances of her responsibility, but she’s already a responsible character in the main show. For the main character, you would expect to see her growth throughout the second act, yet that development only really occurs at the end of the second act.
The other characters are the same from their show counterparts, and their characters shine through the side plot to the main story. Their side plot was the enjoyable part of the movie including the climax up to the resolution of the movie. For instance PJ Duncan (Jason Dolley) is the dumb member of the family, yet throughout the seasons, he gets noticeably smarter and ambitious. This does appear in the movie towards the climax.
While the acting is the major negative part of the movie, the positives outweigh the negatives. Certain jokes and minor plot points pay off towards the climax in clever ways. The movie is very unoriginal in certain plot points, yet makes up for it in the creativity and exaggeration in some of the scenes and especially the climax with the male members of the family. Numerous jokes were surprisingly funny considering that the movie is a decade old.
Despite all the jokes, the movie does know how to transition from silly to serious in a way that doesn’t give the viewer whiplash. The movie is great at evoking emotions as the serious moments give impact, though they aren’t as frequent in the movie as the silly moments; they stick out and carry throughout the rest of the movie.
Overall this movie is worth watching as it captures the craziness of the holidays with family. While the movie does have issues and is heavily dated, it is still a blast to watch even as the movie is over a decade old. This movie is still fun to watch with family and friends, especially around the festive time of Christmas.

Hi, can you please do one for Venus conjunct pluto? It’s just soooo terrible. Women always hate me or start fighting with me randomly. I’ve never had an actual female friend in my life. They always use me and talk bad about me while man are always trying to talk to me so that I can be in a relationship with them. I really wish someone would be there for me ( moon in 8th). I am not sure if it’s my Lilith in the 8th house the reason for this.
Tumblr media
Hi , this was more of a beauty series but since you told me about this problem so i included other points as well ! That could also be because of the other Placements you have .
❤︎VENUS CONJUNCT PLUTO
This was calculated using sidereal measurements , you can see for your tropical as well !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Woman here : 1. Julia Roberts , 2. Avril Lavigne , 3. Raquel Welsh , 4. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter , 5. PJ Harvey , 6. Rachel Leigh Cook
This Placement really gives the native attractive features , generally that are considered conventional , characterised with a beautiful toothy smile , mostly the upper region , thin lips and defined cheek bones.
Although they have a very beautiful smile ,they have some kind of hollowness in their eyes , not all the time but it's visible when they are burdened with something , they are easily able to pick up energies and their eyes become a gateway of showcase , even if they want to hide it .
Photographic tip: don't be anxious , be in the moment and give the best smile , your smile can already wins hearts !
Other women kind of take advantage of them due to their kind hearts or envy them because of their appearance , even when they try to do the right thing they are deemed as fake , this may improve in the later part of their life .
They get a lot of karma through men , like divorces and breakups and sometimes men use them for their benefits . Make sure you are careful who you give your heart to.
On the better side some men , bring them to spotlight after which they can create their own identity .
They love and foster children in their lives because they have known what it feels like to be an outcast , they also have a theme of having miscarriages.
This placement is like so sexualised , people may openly tell them about their lustful desires , please beware of nude leaks and stay away from creeps .
T.w. Beware of rapists, take care of yourself please.
Lastly you are so beautiful and you deserve the world , don't worry about other women and creepy men , you are forever strong , you're your own hero !!
Take hugs 🫂🫂🫂babes don't worry you're already amazing and take the best care of yourself !!!!
Thank you ♡︎

tagged by @alisoun for this book thing!
last read: percy jackson and the lightning thief. my girlfriend loves pj and it has a special place in her heart, having never interacted with any pj media apart from seeing the second movie (?) i promised i would at least read the first book before the new show comes out in december. i read all of it in february except for the last 12 pages and then didnt finish it until last week. it was a great time and as someone who enjoys seeing reinterpretations of old stories i think it was really creative taking these old myths and retelling them in a completely different context.
reading now: poor people with money by dominic hoey. reccomended by both my mum and gfs mum for a long time but told them i had to finish pj first, i read the entire thing in one sitting this morning. i really loved it so much. set in auckland and the far north of nz, two places i grew up in. nothing like reading a novel which namedrops the primary school you went to in the first chapter. the author and main charcter are dyslexic so its written in a way which is so accessible with zero pretense which i always appreciate in art as well. perfectly captures the experience of living in new zealand, the attention to detail is insane and i hope to one day have observational skills like his. i read this at the absolutely perfect time, will have to reread again to fully grasp some things.
up next: six of crows by leigh bardugo. fantasy heist novel. watched the netflix show which combined this and another series set in the same universe, thought this story seemed far more interesting so im excited to see what it has in store. will do the sequel after that.
also looking forward to reading a "human geography" textbook, the next PJ, and maybe some other random recs from mum.
i tag whoever feels like it!

Get to know the Blogger
<3 <3 Thank you  @greypetrel for the tag. Sorry it’s taken me a bit...that ADHD urge to rearrange in the middle of the night on a work day hit on earlier this week and my loft has been a disaster area since.
I think I filled out something similar not too long ago, but as I’m pretty sure most of my answers have changed since then, I shall fill it out again. Plus, I love being tagged :D
Share your wallpaper: I’m rocking the Dragon Age love. A beautiful and complicated piece you can find here, by @lethendralis-paints
Last song you listened to: Feeling nostalgic for being 18 so I’m listening to Here (In Your Arms) by Hellogoodbye
Currently reading: Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo for the second time. The entrire grishaverse gripped me in a way I hadn’t felt since H*P* when I was like 9 years old. Plus, who doesn’t love Wesper?
Last movie: Quasi on Hulu by the people who made Super Troopers. Surprisingly funny, but definitely one of those dumb improv movies you need to be in the mood for.
Last show: lol also Supernatural. I missed Cas, so I’m re-watching some of my favorite episodes while I design a digital planner.
Craving: Sleep. I gave in to my recent craving of homemade brownies and now just need to sugar crash.
What are you wearing right now: A loose 2-piece pj set, blank spaghetti straps and black shorts.
How tall are you: I converted my height from imperial and apparently I am also around 166 cm.
Piercings: Two in each ears that usually has tiny hoops in it. I also had a triple forward helix which was SO AWESOME, but itched like mad so I took them out and let it close.
Tattoos: One on each wrist and a handful of others that I plan on getting if I ever commit the time and money.
Glasses? Contacts? Glasses. I used to wear contacts on special occasions, but I’ve embraced the glasses 24/7 lifestyle.
Last drink: Water
Last thing you ate: The aforementioned brownies
Favorite color: It changes pretty regularly. As far as clothing goes, I really like dark reddish purple, that orange-y yellow, olive green, and eggplant. Any jewel tone really. But I’m also a fan of those sickly sweet pastels when I’m doodling.
Current obsession: I’m between obsessions honestly. I guess the closest thing would be the digital planner I’m designing. Can’t wait until the DA or ME bug bites me again, though. Particularly because I’m *so* close to having completed my second draft of Operation Leviathan, but my brain just won’t do the thing.
Any pets: One adorable, stubborn, sassy basset mix.
Tumblr media
Favorite fictional character: Only one? Umm....Castiel comes to mind immediately. But he’s just the current one, not my all time favorite…all-time favorite is probably…. Kaidan Alenko.
Tagging || I tagged a bunch of people last time and am feeling shy...so please consider yourself tagged and don’t forget to tag me if you do it! <3

For the Red Vox Lasses - Roots / Road Krystal: Night Whitley: Formal Renee: Canvas Ana Leigh: Stillness
(For those of you who don't know, these are my Red Vox characters personified. They're a separate project entirely and are NOT AFFILIATED with the OCs here but I will entertain this Ask)
roots: Is your OC's look inspired by any specific style of clothing or fashion trend? What are the roots and/or inspiration for their look?
Honestly it's all the fashion I personally liked to see and inagined for the four of them. And that's mainly been taking into the themes of the album as well. For Whitley, it's the more grungy side, with her flannel shirt and rough look. Ana-Leigh is a bit more put together (also I like double denim, sue me). Krystal was probably the one with more of a metaphorical stance, with her tattered dress and her oversized hoodie that she likes to retreat into. And Renée invoking the wistfulness and somewhat cozy aspects from the album in hers.
road: What does your OC wear while traveling? Do they have high-quality equipment, or are they making do? What does their gear look like?
This one is good cuz the story they do share is centered on a roadtrip. All of them wear the same kinda clothes. Only Whitley and Renée actually brought a change of clothes for themselves, whereas Ana-Leigh and Krystal just have the clothes on their back.
night: What does your OC wear to sleep? Do they have a favorite pair of PJs, or are they more the birthday suit type?
Krystal absolutely isn't the type to go nakey for bed. Back home she would wear full pyjamas deal or a ankle-length nightgown.
formal: What's your OC's formal look? Do they like dressing up? Do they have different looks for different occasions?
Whitley is not exactly the formal type either. The most formal she has gotten was wearing her "uniform" for her job as a bartender.
canvas: Does your OC have any scars, piercings, tattoos, or other markings? Do they display or cover them up at all?
Renée, ofc, has her two ears pierced with her pearl earrings. However she also has a tattoo on the side of her body. It's of a tree in different seasons (a reference to a lyric from Far Away)
stillness: How does your OC act while still? Are they fidgety? Do they have any common gestures or tics? Does their clothing affect how they hold themselves while at rest?
Ana-Leigh is the guitarist, I feel it goes hand-in-hand that if she doesn't have her guitar, she'd be more fidgety. Anything to mimic her playing the guitar or tapping to the melody.
