Books by Black Authors for Black History Month!
I wanted to share a list of books I love and books that I'm looking forward to reading that are by Black authors in acknowledgement of Black History Month. I feel like a lot of my fellow readers (especially my fellow white readers) always go into a, kind of, reading slump in February and I don't know if that's because the month of January is just ten years long that February feels like a hangover or if it's because they feel the desire to read books by Black authors but then the majority of what is marketed is usually books that are steeped in trauma or nonfiction books. And, like, yeah, nonfiction books are so important but when they're the only kind of book marketed it can make finding the other kinds of books that much harder but I believe that if you read the fun books and the happy books and the fantasy books it will make you want to seek out the nonfiction resources. I'm blabbering so long story short, I thought I would make a little list to do some of the legwork for my fellow readers to find stories that they can check out.
I used GoodReads links (and one StoryGraph) link, you can choose who to purchase from yourself (although I will suggest BookShop.org as your purchase does go towards indie bookstores, I also really like the Libby App which is just your library and it works with your Kindle/Nook/Kobo/iPad). All authors that I have included in this are American or have strong ties to the USA which is why I did not include authors such as Bolu Babalola, Talia Hibbert, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie but I do highly recommend checking them out if you haven't because they do write gorgeously.
Kennedy Ryan has an extensive backlog and beautiful writing, beautiful prose. She had a book called Before I Let Go (Skyland #1) come out in November 2022, it is a second chance romance between a married couple. It has been on my shelf forever, the cover is beautiful and I've heard nothing but truthfully incredible things. I have listened to snippets of the audiobook but keep putting off getting the actual audiobook because Kennedy is the kind of author I want to read the grammar, syntax, wording of everything from. This book actually got optioned to be adapted into a television show and there's a second Skyland book coming out in March called This Could Be Us that has the ARC readers going wild.
Jasmine Guillory is one of my favorite authors. She is a Bay Area native and has a law degree from Stanford. Not only do I think that she writes beautifully but I cannot even describe to you the way that I kick my little feet and twirl my hair. I feel like my favorite of hers changes. Up until a few weeks ago, I would've told you that Olivia Monroe in Party of Two was my favorite Jasmine girly but I listened to Royal Holiday to kick off my reading for January and Vivian Forest is such a beautiful character. She's a 56 year old Black woman who is a veteran social worker who thinks it's too late for her on several fronts and then she gets swept off her feet while on a vacation with her daughter AND THE ROYAL FAMILY. What?! I also think that Jasmine writes, like.... character appropriate sex scenes if that makes sense. Like, Vivian's scenes are more reserved than Olivia's were, Vivian's more closed door than Olivia's were. She also has a Beauty and the Beast inspired book called By The Book and I kept texting my friend the entire way through and then made her buy a copy so she could text me right back with all her thoughts. Amazing. I love her.
You want cozy fantasy romance with monsters and happy Black women being loved by their hot monster lovers? Kimberly Lemming has GOT YOU COVERED.
Plugging my new author friend P.J. Leigh and her book Olawu. She actually responded to my request for some indie author recs on Threads and sent me a copy of Olawu that will be here on Friday and I'm so excited. She describes it as: "Set in precolonial East Africa with romance, action, sisterhood, found family, and a feisty but flawed female lead." I cannot wait to dig into this one.
Another author who messaged me is indie author Quiana Glide. Her bio is that she is an unabashed fangirl and her books feature pregnancy trope, cosplay, professional wrestlers and cafe owners solving murders. Her books sound fucking great and they are available on Kindle Unlimited for my KU girlies (gender neutral).
Celestine Martin messaged me as well and she writes paranormal romance with Black witches, emo mermen and fae princes. I tripped over myself running to my Libby app to place a hold on the audiobook.
25 to Love! by Joye Johnson is another one available on Kindle Unlimited for my KU girlies (gender neutral). The synopsis is: "TV's hottest dating show is '25 to Love!'. To nab a guy from her past, Lola signs on as the token girl of color. All's fair in love and ratings--can a week on TV get Lola closer to the one that got away?" You know what I love? Second chance romances, besties, that's right.
Splinter by Jasper Hyde was another I was recommended. Jasper writes paranormal, LGBTQ+ books. Jasper Hyde is a pen name for Georgina Kiersten who also goes by Rian Fox. The pen name denotes the subgenre that they write. Georgina does go by they/them pronouns and writes plus sized rep and neurodivergent rep too.
Kelly Cain. That's it. That's the tweet. THE EVERHEART BROTHERS SERIES????? If you know anything about me, you know that I have a hearing issue and so I've used audiobooks before but I never really clicked with them or got the hype. Turns out I had boring ass narrators (look I did the audio version of a lot of nonfiction books I had to read about old dead white guys in college so of course I had that feeling). THE EVERHEART BROTHERS AUDIOBOOKS ARE WHAT CHANGED ME. Deanna Anthony, the narrator, is so engaging and I didn't feel like I was listening to an audiobook, I felt like I was sitting across the table at brunch having a gossip session with my bestie. If you read it and you didn't like it, that's fine, but I didn't lie to you and enjoyment of art is subjective but also you're wrong and argue with a wall.
I've been seeing a lot of talk lately about Pride & Protest by Nikki Payne. This is a Pride & Prejudice and one of the reviews says, "If you ever wanted P&P to feel more like watching a swoony, steamy episode of Insecure, this is the book for you."
Currently, I am reading You Made a Fool of Death With Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi. It deals with themes of grief and romance and also bisexual representation. Absolutely beautiful prose. Akwaeke is Nigerian and has been in the USA since college. They are non-binary and go by they/them pronouns.
I also cannot end this list without mentioning Memphis by Tara M. Stringfellow. This follows three generations of a southern Black family in the neighborhood of Douglass in Memphis, TN (I was born a couple miles away in Raleigh) . Now, this book does have quite a few trigger warnings that I won't put here but I do encourage you to READ THE TRIGGER WARNINGS before you purchase this book as it does deal with some pretty heavy subject matter.
I'm also going to end this by saying to keep an eye out for anything done by my best friend, the person who I have shared so many amazing, beautiful, life changing experiences with ALL OVER THE WORLD for the last fourteen years: Isana Skeete (Isana does not use pronouns). If you look at the GoodReads account for Isana that I linked, you'll see lists made with recommendations of books with queer POC rep and asexuality representation.

January 22nd, 2005
Snow had always amazed Camila. The way that each flake was so diverse in size in shape. It was quite like people she had thought. All beautiful is their own unique way. As her eyes focused on a particularly tattered looking flake she thought that must be how she looked. Fragile and so ready to melt away from this world. Just teetering on the edge of existing.
She wasn't used to snow, had only seen it a couple of times in her entire life. You didn't get much snow in Orlando. None to be exact. But her world was going to be different now. Everything in her life had been uprooted because her body couldn't do the most simple thing in the world; live. The majority of the world's population had so much life to live, years to make mistakes and find their purpose, to find their happiness. She didn't get that privilege, however, not since she got sick.
So there she was, in the back seat of her mother's mini van staring at snow falling on her window for the past ten minutes. It had been just the year prior Camila had found that her body was failing her. Leukemia. A disease she had known little about before all of this. So many doctors, so many tests. She often wondered if this was all worth it. Moving their entire lives across the country for her health, when she most likely would never recover. Cancer was expensive and the odds of her survival weren't looking too good. She practically had one foot in the grave as it was. What was the point of dragging on another year of her life if it meant piling on medical debt?
She knew her parents would never see it this way, so she had always kept those thoughts to herself. In reality, she had come to term with dying not long after being diagnosed. It was too mentally exhausting dreading the inevitable.
Of course she had to put on a brave face for her mother and father. Dying was simple for the dead, you take your last breath and you're done, you're free. The real tragedy was with the people who were left to mourn the dead. To have someone you love so dearly be ripped away before your eyes, the pain was unimaginable.
So she endured the treatments, the testing, although she knew in the end, it wouldn't work. She would get another year at best. Most likely less. She had low expectations for her life now. She knew, as much as it hurt her to her core, she would never get to go to college, get drunk, get married. Her whole dream of a life had dissolved with her diagnosis.
Her parents seemed to think otherwise, hence the move. They had heard of a doctor in a small town in Washington. They had hoped that he could help. Naive wishes, but Camila wasn't about to take that away from them, no mater how much it hurt to see them waste so much money on her deteriorating health.
She could see it, her body starting to wither away. Her once curvy stature had began to whither away to skin and bone.  Her eyes, once bright and joyful had turned dull, filled with pain. In fact everything had turned dull, her eyes, her skin, hell, her life. She had a future before everything, and now she had nothing but a ticking clock on her life. Her bones constantly aches and she was always covered in bruises, sometimes it even hurt to breath.
A small sign blurred by her window, welcoming the small family to the town. Finally, signs of civilization were starting to appear as the drive further into town. They had been driving along empty road for what seemed like years, so she was relieved to see some life finally.
The van slowed to a stop in front of a house suddenly. The house was a small homey looking thing, painted a dull yellow. Ugly, but still cute in a weird way? They had to size down from their house previously, having so many medical bills to pay off. Luckily, they weren't a huge family. Just her mother and father besides herself.
Her parents had wanted more kids, having Camila at a young age, but after years of trying, they were met with no success. Who knows, maybe they would try more after Camila died. A second chance at being parents. She hoped they would, they were good parents. The best she could have ever asked for. She was truly lucky to have them.
Ignoring the aches in her joints, Camila stood slowly from her seat onto the cracked pavement of their new driveway. She circled around the car to meet her father at the trunk. They had left most of everything behind to make the move easier, deciding to buy cheap used furniture instead. "What can I help bring in?" Her voice croaked, groggy with fatigue.
"Nonsense, sweetheart. Your mother and I have got it." Her father tutted shooing the teen away. She huffed, laying her hand out in front of her.
Her father looked questionably at his daughter's palm. "Well, I at least need the keys. Don't I?" She laughed, rolling her eyes sarcastically. Receiving a low chuckle in response, he dropped a small silver key in her hand.
"This one can be your copy." He smiled down to her.
She made her way into small house, floorboards creaking beneath her feet as she walked into the family room. The house was only one story, this having been a selling point to her parents as their last house had been two floors. After being diagnosed, it had become too difficult for her to walk up the stairs to her bedroom on a daily basis. There were only two bedrooms in the house, the master, and her own room, so it was easy enough to avoid getting lost. She swung the door open to her own, the hinges whining in protest.
It was small, but freshly cleaned. She could smell the faint scent of pinesol in the air. The wooden floors were bare except for full sized mattress that sat against the far left wall. Her mother had already made a deal with their realtor, making sure that she had acquired a bed before they got there, so Camila could go to sleep early like she often did as of late.
Fatigue often riddled her withering body, but at that moment she was more alert than usual, ready to set her room up and decorate to her liking. She walked to the small window that sat to the right of the mattress and drew the thin white curtains back. The ground outside was stark white with snow and bare besides the trees that lined the edge of the forest. At least she got a nice view.
Once her boxes were carried into her room for her, she began unpacking. She went through piles and piles of her clothing, most of it being many sizes too large. After losing so much weight, she had refused to go out and buy anything new. What was the use when the new clothes would stop fitting within a few months anyway? She did have to buy a few new items, like underwear and a few pairs of pants, but for the most part, she made the baggy shirts work and wore a belt when necessary. If anything, it would hide how unhealthily skinny she was becoming.
Letting out an exasperated sigh, she finished hanging the remainder of her clothing in the cramped closet. She pushed the last few boxes aside, opening one to grab some clean bedding and a pillow. She struggled, bones starting to ache fervently and she stretched the last corner of the fitted sheet onto the mattress. She huffed as she threw the blankets and pillows in place and stepped back to look at the finished product. She shrugged, deciding that it looked comfortable enough.
She sluggishly pealed her clothing away from her body, exhaustion suddenly hitting her like a ton of bricks. Pulling on the old worn sweatpants and t-shirt she had set aside, she plopped down onto the plush mattress, already feeling her eyes droop with sleep. She decided she would push her shower off until morning, knowing it wouldn’t go well if she was so lethargic. The last thing she needed was to pass out in the middle of showering.
January 23rd, 2005
The warm stream of water poured over her fragile body, trailing down her thin frame. She let out a contented sigh, relishing in the comfort that it brought to her aching skin. She looked down at herself, taking the sight in. Her hands were becoming much bonier than before. Her old rings no longer fit her fingers, sliding and rotating anytime she tried to wear them. Her hip bones jutted out, no longer having a layer of fat to cover them.
She had used to be a little chubby, always wishing she could have a flat stomach. Now, she would do anything to get her old body back. It was odd how that worked. You really didn't appreciate what you had until you lost it.
Her thoughts were cut off, the once warm water turning to ice. Shit, she thought, jumping out and engulfing her rigid body in a fluffy towel. Guess the hot water ran out. She wrapped the towel snuggly around herself, walking swiftly to her room, locking the door behind her.
The sun peered through the crack in her curtains, leaving a beam of blinding light streaming through the mostly empty room. Rummaging through one of the boxes labeled with her name, she grabbed her hairdryer and plugged it into the outlet next to the one mirror she had brought from the move. She didn't like the way it made her hair frizzy, but she also didn't want to go to her first day of school with wet hair. She definitely didn’t need to get sick with a cold on top of everything else.
School. Forks High School. She didn't enjoy the fact that she would be entering halfway through her junior year, but she refused to let her parents keep her home any longer. She had begged them to let her go, her lack of a good immune system being the reason they had taken her out in the first place. She wanted to experience some kind of normal high school life before she died. She wanted friends again. So she had decided to try and conceal her sickness as long as possible. She didn't need people's sympathy, she'd gotten enough of that, she just wanted some sense of normalcy. Luckily, her hair hadn't started falling out from chemo yet, so for the time being she could act as if things were normal.
But in the end, it would be the farthest thing away from a normal high school experience.

Pairing: Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw x girlfriend!reader
T/W: Allusions to sex
[y/n] stood back and watched the disembarkation of the Naval carrier. When Bradley had asked her to pick him up a month ago, the idea seemed like a no brainer.
She missed him; their first two months together were filled with the consistency of seeing each other multiple times a week. She appreciated how Bradley let her maintain her own space but still let her know he was there, even with an ocean dividing them. His words and actions never made her doubt that he missed her too. She smiled at the memory of receiving a “bouquet of books” on a rotten day. With titles named after flowers, Bradley brought a smile to her face using his knowledge of her love of books and disdain for dead flowers.
But now, a month later and apart she wondered if it was a good idea. Grand gestures, scheduled calls and sporadic texts could only maintain a relationship so much. However, those negative thoughts were dispelled as quickly as an exuberant grin was directed her way.
If asked, neither Bradley or [y/n] would be able to report who moved to embrace the other first. The recognition and elation of seeing each other in person  overcame the monotony of determining who moved first.
Giving a final squeeze to her waist, Bradley removed himself from her neck. “Hi,” he breathed out as he got lost in those sparkling [color] eyes.  Bradley felt let the tension leave his shoulders, allowing himself to feel safe since their departure a month ago.
“Hello,” [y/n] giggled out, “It’s nice to see you.”
Bradley chuckled at the formalities. He would have kissed the hell out of her if it wasn’t for the presence of a certain naval officer. Admiral ‘Iron Blood’ Johnson put Rooster on his shit list for being “a lovesick puppy” a week into detachment.
“It’s nice to be seen by you.” He responded, leaning in and enjoying the mischievous gleam overtaking her eyes.
Giving a conspicuous glance to her left and right, [y/n] lowered her voice. “Is the coast clear?”
When she first heard that Bradley used all his call time up within the first week, she felt bad for her hand in taking away his connection to the mainland. When she heard that he traded his priority shower privileges to gain more, she was completely charmed. Asking him why he had done hadn’t lessened the butterflies now permanently living inside her stomach. If anything, his earnest and heartfelt  “because you’re worth it.”, let them blossom into a wild frenzy.
With a glance at the retreating naval car, Bradley cradled [y/n] cheek reveling in the warmth and joy he felt able to touch her again.
“The eagle has flown the nest.” was the last thing his lips uttered before he attached them to hers. [y/n] was lucky enough to say she’d been kissed by Bradley Bradshaw hundreds of times. She’d received kisses that she would describe as sweet, joyful, heated, content. However, the only time she could recall it being hesitant was now and on their first date.
With a sigh against his lips and the murmur of his name, [y/n] provided the encouragement Bradley needed. Smiling against her lips, his hands burrowed into her hair.  Their lips clung together softly and passionately, speaking of a month of longing and a promise to rectify that.
However, that promise was momentarily broken by a feminine voice. “So this is where you ran off to, Bradshaw.”
Bradley recovered quickly albeit with a flash of annoyance for the interruption.
“Darlin’, this is the mood killer of a pilot I was telling you about.” Bradley joked, earning himself a punch to land on his left bicep.
“Phoenix, right?” [y/n] figured the beautiful brunette lieutenant had to be her. One of the few things Bradley could tell her about his job was his coworkers. He always spoke favorably of Phoenix for her intellect, skills and trustworthy nature. Based on Bradley’s reports, [y/n] knew she probably owed Phoenix a lifetime of gratitude for being such a good friend to her boyfriend.
“Natasha Trace. And you must be [y/n].” Phoenix offered her hand and shook it when [y/n]’s connected with hers. “He didn’t shut up about you the entire time, even after Admiral Johnson had him running extra laps for his ‘pitiful pining’”. Natasha would be lying if she said she wasn’t curious about [y/n]. She’d known Rooster for a few years and she had never seen him as grounded or happy as he currently was.
“I wasn’t aware there was pining.” [y/n] remarked as she peered over her shoulder at Rooster who perched himself there.
Bradley pressed her to his chest as his arms hugged her waist before kissing her cheek. “I yearned, I burned, I pined.”
Phoenix shook her head at Rooster theatrics, expecting nothing less from the gregarious pilot. “Is it true you pushed him into the ocean on your first date?”
Fluttering her lashes at Phoenix, [y/n] replied innocently. “I still maintain he pushed himself.”
However, the innocence of the statement coupled with the devilish smile on [y/n]’s face lead the trio to break into a waterfall of laughter.
Phoenix gave [y/n] an appreciative glance once their laughter subsided. “I have a feeling you and I are going to be good friends. Are you guys joining us at the bar?”
Bradley was grateful that Phoenix and [y/n] were getting along. Phoenix was a close friend to him and he always knew she and [y/n] would hit it off. However, tonight wasn’t the night he wanted to confirm his theory.
“Stop trying to steal my date, Phoenix. We have French toast to make.”
“Is that a euphemism for sex?” Came a scream from Phoenix as she watched Rooster guide [y/n] toward the parked cars without even a goodbye or glance back.
Once Bradley’s duffel bag was stored in her trunk and her boyfriend was seated in the passenger seat, [y/n] turned toward her boyfriend. “Not that I’m complaining either way, but is French toast a euphemism for sex?”
Bradley leaned his head back against the headrest as his boisterous laughter filled the car. “No! It’s a family tradition that my dad started. I know you like French toast and…” Breaking off suddenly, Bradley took her hand in his before continuing bashfully, “and I wanted to share it with you.”
Bradley had decided two weeks into detachment that he would share this tradition with [y/n]. The month apart crystalized how much she meant and could mean to him. Bradley always thought of himself as a wingman. To be there for someone in any means and to never asked for anything in return. But [y/n] had shown him how even a wingman needs their own. And she had become that to him, and that security opened the sky of possibilities.
"I'd be honored to." [y/n] spoke softly as if afraid that her voice would break the spell around them.
Bradley raised her hand to his lips and began he brush a flutter of kisses against the back of it. Pausing his kisses, he added cheekily with a wink, “Plus the sex is an added bonus”.
Returning his cheeky smile, [y/n] raised an eyebrow at her boyfriend. “So your place or mine?”
The Sacred Tradition of Cinnamon and Safety is the sequel to this piece
A/N: As usual, I always love feedback and hope you all enjoyed!

"Road to Nowhere" is a song by American band Talking Heads, It was written by lead singer David Byrne. It was released as a single from their 1985 album Little Creatures and reached #25 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and #6 on the UK, German and South African charts.
"I wanted to write a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom," recalled Byrne. "At our deaths and at the apocalypse... always looming, folks. ... I think it succeeded. The front bit, the white gospel choir, is kind of tacked on, 'cause I didn't think the rest of the song was enough... I mean, it was only two chords. So, out of embarrassment, or shame, I wrote an intro section that had a couple more in it."
The music video was directed by Byrne and Stephen R. Johnson and features the band and various objects revolving, including boxes around Byrne's head. Johnson re-used some of the effects techniques in award-winning videos for Peter Gabriel the following year: "Sledgehammer" and "Big Time". Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz portray a couple growing older, and masked businessmen pummel each other with briefcases and a runaway shopping cart, as if in their own "road to nowhere". Some parts were shot in the back yard and pool of actor Stephen Tobolowsky, who was co-writing Byrne's film True Stories at the time.

House Republicans may be relieved that they finally have a Speaker after 22 days of infighting. But the rest of the country should worry that there's a far right extremist second in line to the presidency. "MAGA Mike" Johnson is even more extreme than Trump on some issues.
Election denier, climate skeptic, anti-abortion: seven beliefs of new US House speaker Mike Johnson
He tried to overturn the 2020 election In the modern Republican party, supporting Donald Trump’s lie about voter fraud in his defeat by Joe Biden is hardly an outlandish position. But Johnson took it further. After the election, he voiced support for Trump’s conspiracy theory that voting machines were rigged. Later, he was one of 147 Republicans to object to results in key states, even after a pro-Trump mob attacked Congress on January 6, a riot now linked to nine deaths and hundreds of convictions. [ ... ] He was a spokesperson for a ‘hate group’ Before entering politics, Johnson worked for the Alliance Defending Freedom – designated a hate group by the Southern Law Poverty Center, which tracks US extremists. According to the SPLC, the ADF has “supported the recriminalisation of sexual acts between consenting LGBTQ+ adults in the US and criminalisation abroad; defended state-sanctioned sterilisation of trans people abroad; contended that LGBTQ+ people are more likely to engage in paedophilia; and claimed that a ‘homosexual agenda’ will destroy Christianity and society”. [ ... ] He opposes LGBTQ+ rights In state politics and at the national level, Johnson has worked to claw back gains made by LGBTQ+ Americans in their fight for equality. In 2016, as he ran for Congress, he told the Louisiana Baptist Message he had “been out on the front lines of the ‘culture war’ defending religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and biblical values, including the defense of traditional marriage, and other ideals like these when they’ve been under assault”. He has since led efforts for a national “don’t say gay” bill, regarding the teaching of LGBTQ+ issues in schools, and is also opposed to gender-affirming care for children. On Wednesday, Rev Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality, said: “Johnson has made a career out of attacking the LGBTQ+ community at every turn." His positions are out of touch with the clear majority support for LGBTQ+ equality in our country. His new leadership role is just further proof of the dangerous priorities of the GOP and the critical stakes for our democracy – and for LGBTQ+ Americans – in 2024.” [ ... ] He is stringently anti-abortion Johnson has maintained a relatively low profile in Congress but when last year the supreme court removed the right to abortion, Johnson celebrated “a historic and joyful day”. Though Dobbs v Jackson returned abortion rights to the states, Johnson has co-sponsored bills for a nationwide ban. And as he neared his position of power, footage spread of striking remarks in a House hearing. “Roe v Wade did constitutional cover to the elective killing of unborn children in America, period,” Johnson said. [ ... ] He wants to cut social security and Medicare As those comments indicate, Johnson wants to cut programs on which millions rely. Such cuts are widely regarded as a political third-rail – Trump has used the issue to attack Republican presidential rivals, saying only he will defend such benefits – but Johnson is far from alone in wanting to swing the axe. He is an advocate for ‘covenant marriage’ When he married his wife, Kelly, in 1999, the couple agreed to a “covenant” marriage: a conservative Christian idea that makes it harder to divorce. The Johnsons promoted the idea on ABC’s Good Morning America. [ ... ] He is a climate skeptic In 2017, Johnson told voters in his oil-rich home state: “The climate is changing, but the question is, is it being caused by natural cycles over the span of the Earth’s history? Or is it changing because we drive SUVs? I don’t believe in the latter. I don’t think that’s the primary driver.”
You'd really have to try hard to find somebody worse than MAGA Mike. But we're not without the power of the vote; we need to use that power every chance we get.
November 7th is Election Day in many parts of the US. Most notably...
Ohio's statewide ballot measure to restore reproductive freedom by placing a woman's right to choose in the Ohio Constitution. A YES vote on Issue 1 takes abortion out of the hands of the gerrymandered GOP legislature.
Kentucky's Democratic governor is up for re-election.
The Virginia legislature is up for election. If Republicans gain control of both chambers they will try to ban abortion; reproductive tyranny is part of the GOP agenda whenever they hold a trifecta in a state. There's also a special election to fill a vacancy for a US House seat in VA-04.
The state legislature in New Jersey is up for election.
There are judicial elections in Pennsylvania including for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. There's also a special election to fill a vacancy in the Penn House of Representatives which is currently tied 101 Democrats – 101 Republicans.
All state offices in Mississippi including governor and legislature are up for election. Surprisingly, polls show the GOP incumbent governor ahead by just 1% with 10% undecided.
Like Mississippi, all state offices in Louisiana are up for election.
Rhode Island has a special election to fill a vacancy for a US House seat in RI-01.
^^^ Those are just the highlights. There are elections of some sort in most states on November 7th.
Republicans may grumble at times, but they always turn out for elections. They have a disproportionate amount of power in the US because they vote while many of their liberal neighbors stay home or become too ideologically persnickety.
Allegedly "moderate" GOP House members ultimately fell in line and unanimously backed a far right Speaker.
Elections at all levels count. Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson got his start in politics in the Louisiana legislature. He is now the highest ranking GOP elected official in the US.
There's no such thing as an unimportant election. Vote in the November 7th election and actively encourage like-minded friends, family, and neighbors to do so as well.

This is an Ashley Johnson appreciate post. Every significant imodna moment in cr3 I've had to watch 3 times:
to ✨experience✨ it
to pay attention to Marisha and Laura's faces
for Ashley's reaction
Because her reactions tell me that it wasn't just me noticing the gay shit!! It wasn't my bias as a viewer. Ashley's literally sandwiched in between these two amazing actors and she's as awed as the rest of us!
Listen, I love her as Fearne. I love how Fearne is chaotic and vengeful and unapologetic. But I love Ashley as a player even more. Because, especially this campaign, she's so open about how much she's enjoying the game! This is a group of incredibly talented professionals telling a story together. But it's also just a group of friends playing d&d. And I think there's something so unifying, about seeing another person who loves d&d enjoying d&d the same way I do. Our games probably couldn't be more different. But to actually see, to have video proof, that other people have that same instinctual, immediate, joyful reaction to the game as my friends and I do? There's something magical about that to me. And Ashley shows that in the most honest, unfiltered way that I've seen online.

Listed: The Spatulas — Part 1
Tumblr media
The Spatulas churn out uneasy jangle pop straight from the garage — or, more literally, the storage unit where the band met to play and beat back their pandemic frustrations. Their sound is built on blunt yet psychedelic melodies, chopping guitar, and rhythms that lurch then steady themselves. Assembled in various forms over the last several years, the Oregon-based quartet released March Chant, their first EP,in December of 2023. Alex Johnson found it “raw and charming…a full band record [that pairs] the relief at venting your anger and the goofy waywardness of distracting yourself with a joyful noise.”
Miranda's List: A bunch of songs that seem to make me me...
Mope Grooves — Look At The Time, 2018
youtube
Catchiest song ever. My friend Stevie made a bunch of wonderful music in her lifetime and was a beautiful person. Everything she put out on her label, See My Friends Records is great, and she included many of my fellow Oregonians on Mope Grooves albums. Our previous Spats drummer, Kyle closes out this song "Look At The Time" with that wave of nostalgic synth sound.
Pip Proud De Dum De Dum, 1967
youtube
The original recording of this Pip Proud album is golden all the way through. I listened to this alone on a sheep farm in Oregon in the middle of rainy winter in 2021 and it influenced my writing a lot.
Nico — One More Chance, 1983
youtube
Nico at her most gothic rock. I love this echoey version — makes me wanna dance! The beat is great. Ambient synth sounds abound; her vocals incredible as ever... The origins of The Drama of Exile, her fifth album — so full of drug-addled dysfunction!
Pearls Before Swine — Playmate, 1967
youtube
One Nation Underground is one of my most listened-to records; the grooves are worn. I used to cover the opener song, “Another Time” pre-Spats, with my Partners, Buddies and Pals. “Playmate” is the upbeat, second song on the album, a cover of an old children’s song, which I think is perfect for me. “(Oh Dear) Miss Morse,” is another hit on side A, on side B it's “Uncle John” and “Surrealistic Waltz.”
Grace Slick & The Great Society — Often As I May, 1966
youtube
This song propels you along. It sounds so beautiful, like a traditional folk song, yet a Slick original. Great fun to sing along with this gal.
Lou Reed — Waves of Fear, 1981
youtube
Robert Quine’s guitar hits the spot, and with Lou’s voice and guitar, those lyrics — so hard!
Yoko Ono & Plastic Ono Band — Why, 1970
youtube
The most adventurous and exciting song ever. Yoko’s primal screaming, with John’s guitar wailing, and Klaus, and Ringo clipping along... WHYYYYYY????? A brilliant reminder to LET IT OUT.
The Bats — Made Up in Blue, 1986
youtube
Beloved. Great bass. The song that I think put this Flying Nun band on the map, leading up to another special full album, Daddy’s Highway from 1987, the year I was born. The accompanying music video is a treasure!
Broadcast — I Found The F, 2005
youtube
We’re so lucky to have the album Tender Buttons, and the band Broadcast. The album was made while singer Trish Keenan’s father was dying of cancer, six years before she herself died of pneumonia from swine flu. Knowing this makes it all the more eerily personal and sweet-sounding for me. Both my parents were dead by the time I was 32, so I’m familiar with making art as a response to grief.
Don Cherry and Organic Music Theater — Om Shanti Om, 1976
youtube
This is the full live performance at RAI Studios in Rome, Italy, for television broadcast. Listen to the ~47-minute album Om Shanti Om as much needed meditation. Imagine also all Moki Cherry’s tapestries in full color, as featured in the Blank Forms book I was so engrossed in last summer.

this rainy day
Tumblr media
summary: kent falls for the sweet girl in his poetry class
warnings: sunshine!reader who uses she/her pronouns, wrote this because i’m in my kj era
song referenced: just a cloud away by pharrell williams
word count: 3.04k
kent loved his poetry class. he liked looking at different poets and dissecting their works. he liked writing his own poetry while trying to mimic the styles they talked about in class. he liked having a class that served as a creative outlet, one where he could interpret one thing while the person sitting three rows behind him got a completely different message. but most of all, the main reason why he loved his three hour poetry class that met on wednesday’s at nine am was the girl that sat next to him.
she showed up on the first day of class two minutes before the lecture began, and took the seat right next to him. it was raining that day. her hair was slightly wet and her bright red rain boots stood out in the crowd of black and gray. it was a dreary, rainy day after all, but her personality completely contrasted the gloomy atmosphere.
“you don’t mind if i sit here, do you?” she asked quietly, taking the seat next to him. “not at all,” he answered, briefly looking up from his phone. “great thanks,” she replied, and that was the end of their conversation for the day.
weeks went by, and kent barely spoke to the girl sitting next to him. of course he noticed little things about her. like how she used one of those pens that had all the different ink colors to take notes, and would change the color based on the topic of the notes. he picked up on the fact that she wore bright colors that enhanced her joyful personality. he listened while she mumbled the lyrics to a random song under her breath, or that time she came into class with her music on full blast and kent could clearly hear the song blaring from her headphones; something about clouds and a rainy day.
that was the day that kent started a conversation with her. the two exchanged pleasantries, as usual, and then he brought up her taste in music. “so what song were you listening to? something about a rainy day?” he asked, a small smile on his face. “oh you heard that? sorry it was so loud, but the song is just a cloud away by pharrell williams. it’s from despicable me two,” she answered, a soft blush coating her cheeks. kent chuckled. her song choice totally fit her character in the personal narrative that was his life.
“i’ll have to check it out. if it’s worthy of being put on full blast, it must be a good song,” he said. “yeah you should. i think you’d like it,” she answered, picking up her pen and opening to a new page in her notebook. “i’m kent by the way. kent johnson,” he introduced himself, sticking his hand out of her to shake. “hi kent, i’m y/n l/n,” she replied, shaking his hand.
kent smiled at her. their friendship was going to be a fun one, he just knew it.
after a couple classes, y/n and kent fell into a routine. he would wait for her at the entrance to the lecture hall, and the two of them would walk in together, discussing whatever song she was listening to that day. then, after class, he would walk her to the dining hall, where they parted ways until the following week.
for the most part, their contact was confined to those three hours on wednesday mornings. that changed when kent first spotted her sitting in the stands at one of his home games. in all the times they’d spoken, him playing hockey had never come up, and he honestly wanted to keep it that way. she saw him as kent, the dorky guy from poetry class, not kent the fifth overall nhl draft pick.
her presence at his game made him nervous. he wanted to play well to impress her. his nervous energy was picked up on by owen, who didn’t hesitate to comment on it. “you okay kj? it’s just michigan state. we can beat them in our sleep,” owen said. “yeah i’m fine,” kent answered shortly, returning to his warm up drills. after the game kent hustled outside to see her, but she was gone. he frowned at the thought, but he knew that he’d see her again on wednesday.
at their next poetry class, kent waited for y/n outside, per usual, with a small hot coffee in his hands. “hi kent,” she greeted, pulling out her earbuds. “hi y/n. i got you a coffee,” he said, handing her the steaming cup. “thank you! you didn’t have to do that,” she replied, taking the cup from him as the two walked towards their normal seats. kent wanted to ask her about the hockey game, and somehow mention that he was glad she made it.
“so y/n, i saw you at the hockey game this weekend,” he said as they took their seats. “yeah i went with a couple friends. when did you see me? why didn’t you come say hi? i wish i saw you,” she answered, turning her body to face him. “well i was kind of busy playing,” he replied bashfully, rubbing at the back of his neck. “you play hockey?” she asked, amazement clear in her voice. “yeah,” kent whispered, a red blush coating his cheeks. “that’s so cool. you must really like it to play in college,” she observed, and kent nodded his head in agreement. he went to say some more, but the professor walked in and began their discussion for the day.
after class that day kent asked y/n for her number, which she happily gave him. “now i can text you the playlist i made,” she said after saving his contact in her phone. “what playlist?” kent asked as they began the trek to the dining hall. “the one with all the songs you didn’t know. everytime you asked me what song i was listening too, i added it to the playlist,” she replied, like it was the most casual thing in the world. kent’s heart swelled. she was absolutely adorable, and he loved it.
later that night, kent received a link to her spotify playlist. without hesitation, he clicked the play button. the first song that popped up was just a cloud away. the song from despicable me two, he remembered. he took a screenshot of the app, clearly showing which song was playing, and sent it to y/n along with a text that read: “is this your favorite song?” she replied quickly: “yes!! enjoy the playlist!!”
the next few games, the boys noticed a change in kent’s behavior. he was checking his phone more often in the locker room and suddenly he was listening to music before warmups. they didn’t question it, until brendan caught him sneaking out of the locker room with a spare jersey in hand.
“dude look,” he whispered, trying to catch thomas’s attention. “what?” thomas asked, following brendan’s finger, which was pointing at kent leaving the locker room. “should we follow him?” brendan asked. “is that considered an invasion of privacy?” thomas replied. “is what considered an invasion of privacy?” owen asked, joining in on their conversation. “following kent,” the duo answered in unison. “where was he going?” the tall boy asked, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“we don’t know. that’s why we’re following him,” brendan answered, as he got up and left the locker room, gesturing for owen and thomas to come along. “where are we going?” matty and truss asked as they followed the three boys out of the locker room. “to spy on kent,” thomas answered casually.
“are you sure it’s okay if i wear this?” an unfamiliar voice asked, causing the five boys to freeze in their steps. “yeah it’s totally fine,” kent answered. “you’re not gonna get into trouble?” the first person asked, and brendan turned to the boys mouthing the words ‘a girl?’. kent chuckled at her question. “i’m not gonna get in trouble, sunshine, just relax. now will you please put it on? i want to see,” he begged, a slight whine present in his voice. “oh my god,” owen whispered, eyes wide. “kent totally has a girlfriend,” he continued, causing all the boys to smile.
now they were all back in the locker room, kent included, putting on their pads. “so sunshine, are you ready for tonight's game?” brendan asked, shooting thomas a look. “what? are you talking to me?” kent asked. “yeah. is it okay if i call you sunshine?” brendan replied, a teasing smirk on his face. “yeah i guess. why are you acting weird brisson?” kent questioned the brunette boy. “no reason. just being my normal self,” he answered, turning back to his own business.
when the team skated out onto the ice, kent’s eyes searched for y/n in the sea of maize and blue. finally, his eyes locked with hers and she waved at him, a big smile on her face. kent smiled too, a natural response to her beautiful one, waving. thankfully, none of the boys noticed the brief interaction between the two, so kent could play the game without hearing their chirping in his ear.
“post-win party at my house! who’s in?” brendan shouted when the team reentered the locker room after a great game and big win. everyone responded with a chorus of ‘yeahs’ and ‘mes’. well everyone except kent, who flat out said no. “no partying tonight kj? not even after that big goal?”  matty asked. “nah man. i think i’m just gonna turn in and take it easy,” he replied, undressing at top speed.
finally, after what felt like forever, he was able to meet y/n in the main entrance to yost. “hi sunshine,” he whispered, sliding into the spot next to her. “hi kent! you played so well,” she praised, pulling him into a hug, a new edition in their encounters. “thank you. are we still on for movie night?” he asked. this would be their first time hanging out together outside of poetry class. “um yeah. you have to watch despicable me two, starstruck, tangled, and so many more. we need to start somewhere,” she replied, a big smile on her face. “okay i was just checking,” kent answered, taking her hand in his.
the two of them walked to kent’s house off campus. on the way there, y/n plugged in her headphones, giving one to kent. the two listened to the playlist she made for him, occasionally talking about the song that was playing, until they reached the house.
“i’m going to change. do you want to order a pizza or something?” kent asked as he led y/n into the kitchen area. “yeah sure. i like cheese but what kind do you want?” she replied, picking up her cell phone to call the number on the menu kent handed her. “let’s get a veggie one too. oh and an order of mozzarella sticks,” he said. y/n smiled at him, nodding as she repeated the order quietly to herself. kent looked at her fondly, she was so pretty and an absolute ray of sunshine in his drab life.
“so i ordered the pizza. they said about twenty minutes,” y/n announced when kent returned in a pair of sweatpants and a michigan hockey shirt. “awesome! i left some sweats and a shirt on my bed if you wanted to change out of your jeans,” kent replied, getting a bit shy at the end. “that’d be great, thanks kent. which room is yours?” “down the hall, last one on your right,” he instructed with a small smile. y/n nodded, before heading off to get changed.
when she came back, completely decked out in his clothes, kent couldn’t help the giant smile and bright blush that occupied his face. she was so darn cute. “you look great,” he mumbled as she sat on the couch next to him. “shut up,” was the reply as they flicked through netflix until y/n found despicable me two.
that night they sat cuddled up on the couch, watching the films whose soundtrack made up their shared playlist. eventually the two moved the marathon from the living room to kent’s bedroom. “my roommates will ask too many questions if they see us out here, and no one wants to deal with that,” he explained as she followed him down the hall. kent didn’t know what time it was, but at some point during the night his bedroom door opened. whoever it was took one look at the duo cuddled up in kent’s bed before closing the door softly.
“kent breakfast is ready…oh my god!” someone shouted. kent groaned loudly, pulling the covers up above his head. “get out,” he rasped, not even looking at the person standing in his doorway. the person snickered, “yeah we’ll leave you and your girlfriend alone.” that caused kent’s eyes to widen. suddenly he was very aware of the second body in his bed, and how his arms were wrapped tightly around her.
“oh god! y/n…y/n,” kent said, shaking her shoulders to get her to wake up. “mmm,” she mumbled, burying her face deeper into his pillows. “no y/n you don’t understand, they saw us. my roommates,” he panicked, sitting up in bed. her eyes fluttered open at his statement, a yawn escaping her lips as she stretched out her arms. “what’s the big deal?” she asked, rubbing her eyes. kent’s eyes grew to the size of a golf ball. how was she so relaxed given their current predicament?
“they saw us, sleeping, together in the same bed,” kent said slowly. “okay and? all we did was sleep,” she replied. kent’s hand came up to his face. “they’re going to talk sunshine,” he mumbled. at his tone of utter defeat, y/n moved closer to him. she placed her hand on his shoulder, rubbing soothing circles on it with her thumb. “so let them. we know the truth. the two of us are just friends, it was simply platonic cuddling,” she whispered and a lump grew in kent’s throat at her words.
right. they were just friends.
the day an impromptu meeting occurred between y/n and kent’s friends was one of the best and worst days of his life. it was amazing because now he wasn’t hiding anything from the people who had quickly become like brothers to him. they met y/n and everyone got along fairly well. the downside to this was that everyone got along really well. kent could no longer justify keeping her all to himself because she got along with all the other guys. he had to share now.
that’s exactly what was happening right now. kent brought y/n to a party at one of the guy’s houses after another win. although she was still wearing his jersey, the one with his last name on it, he didn’t like the way brendan was dancing with her. he was too close. kent felt his jaw clench and his grip on the red solo cup tighten. y/n, bless her soul, noticed kent’s unease from a distance and promptly excused herself from brendan’s grip.
“come outside and chat with me? it’s hot in here,” she asked approaching kent. “yeah sure,” kent agreed with no hesitation. he relaxed as y/n’s hand found its way into his as she led him through the crowded house to the front stairs. she sat down on the stoop, patting the spot next to her, which kent happily took.
they sat in silence for a minute, enjoying the feeling of being next to each other in the cool michigan air. “i’m sorry for dancing with brendan,” y/n finally said, looking anxiously at kent. the blonde’s eyebrows shot up and his mouth fell open. he had not meant to be that obvious. “why are you apologizing? you can dance with whoever you want,” kent asked. “i ignored you, and you're the one who invited me to the party. besides it was stupid to think brendan’s idea would work anyways,” she answered, looking away from his sea green eyes.
a look of confusion passed over kent’s face. “what did brendan say?” he asked, grabbing her hand in his. she sighed, looking back at him. she opened her mouth to respond but gently shook her head no, refusing to say anything. “what did he say, sunshine?” kent demanded, voice taking a firmer tone. “that you liked me, but that’s absurd right? i mean we’re just friends,” she said, throwing in a forced laugh to make it seem like she wasn’t sad about their lack of a romantic relationship.
“oh sunshine,” kent whispered, hands coming up to cup her cheeks. “please kent don’t. if you don’t feel the same way just,” she started but was cut off when his plump lips collided with hers. the kiss said everything that kent needed to say. how much he wanted her, no needed her, and how he’s always loved her. it took y/n a second, but quickly their mouths were moving insync. her hands held his wrists, keeping him close to her.
when they pulled away for air, kent’s forehead rested on hers. “everything changed when i saw you, sunshine. you’re all i want, if you’ll have me,” he confessed, looking into her gorgeous eyes. she nodded. “of course kent. you’re all i want too,” she answered sincerely. kent smiled, pulling her in for another kiss. “can we go home? maybe watch tangled?” he asked, thumb softly rubbing across her cheek. “i’d like that,” she answered as the two of them stood up from the steps.
“you know, thank goodness for that rainy day,” kent said, swinging their joined hands back and forth. “what rainy day?” she asked, giving him a quizzical look. “the first poetry class was on a rainy day. you had these cherry red rain boots on, and immediately my eyes were focusing solely on you,” he explained. “so without that rainy day, we never would’ve met. who knew you were only a cloud away sunshine,” he continued causing a blush to rise on her cheeks.

Beautiful article on Adam Johnson's Celebration of Life, includes those from the hockey world who attended and their shared words:
- - -
HIBBING, Minn. — In a small, hard-working town of 16,000 in Minnesota’s Iron Range, where there are streets named after Bob Dylan and there’s a sense of pride at having also produced MLB legend Roger Maris and Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin McHale, there is — and was — only one “Adam.”
“If you said the name ‘Adam’ in Hibbing, everybody knew that meant Adam Johnson,” said Scott Pionk, the father of Winnipeg Jets defenseman Neal Pionk and Wild draft pick and University of Minnesota-Duluth freshman Aaron Pionk. “Like LeBron, he needed only one name: Adam.”
Jim Perunovich, the father of St. Louis Blues defenseman Scott Perunovich, agreed: “Cher. Bono. Everyone knows who Adam is.”
That’s why on a chilly, wet Monday afternoon, some 3,000 people filled the Hibbing Memorial Arena, which was originally built during the Great Depression and stands three blocks from Adam’s old high school, to pay their respects and offer an outpouring of love and support to the friends and family who are reeling right now. Nine days earlier, Hibbing’s “Adam” died at 29 years old playing the sport he loved, cut by a skate blade across the neck while playing professionally in England.
The Nottingham Panthers on Saturday conducted their own memorial, at Motorpoint Arena, where assistant coach Kevin Moore said Panthers fans had immediately taken to Adam — “our best player” – and will “wear his No. 47 in their hearts forever.”
Then on Sunday, Nottingham Forest football player and Panthers fanatic Orel Johnson Mangala scored in the 47th minute of a Premier League victory over Aston Villa — while fans were paying tribute to Adam with a one-minute ovation. Hours later, Matthew Thiessen, the goalie for Adam’s alma mater, University of Minnesota-Duluth, made a career-best 47 saves in a 3-3 tie with cross-state rival University of Minnesota.
On Monday in Hibbing, scores of people walked into the lobby of the arena and were greeted by a picture of Adam flashing his joyful and infectious smile.
There was a condolence book and there were pictures of him as a baby and young boy running around or skating with his older brother, Ryan. There were pictures of Adam excelling with a hockey stick and tennis racket in his hand. There were pictures of him playing with his young nephew and niece and kissing his fiancée, Ryan Wolfe, a St. Francis native who he fell in love with instantly and planned to buy a farm or coffee shop with.
Tumblr media
Seeing so many pictures of a happy Adam and hearing the memories of him was a great reminder that Adam is not just a name, not just a stranger causing so many other strangers to argue on social media about how and why he died. And the term “neck guard” wasn’t uttered once Monday, even though Adam’s death may end up causing a lot of good in the game as college and professional hockey players are starting, one by one, to seek out neck protection.
We were reminded that Adam was a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin and everybody’s best friend.
“Adam truly is and always will be our hometown hero,” said former Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets teammate Jake Doherty, one of nearly two dozen speakers to pay homage.
The nearly two-hour service was often funny and more often profoundly sad. And fittingly, it took place on the sheet of ice where Adam used to electrify, in the building he used to fill.
Hockey runs deep in Hibbing, and Adam’s death brought this community together.
Longtime P.A. announcer Dan Marich boisterously welcomed folks into the arena intentionally because that’s the way Adam would have heard it on the ice when he was in the starting lineup. And he ended the ceremony by announcing Adam’s name like he had just scored a goal to draw a thunderous ovation from the crowd as a band did a rendition of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” – a song Adam learned to play on a guitar he saved up to buy when he was a teenager.
This was not long after the same band caused waterworks by playing one of Adam’s favorite campfire songs, the song he used to love to sing with his best friend, Neal Pionk: the Eagles’ “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”
There were so many poignant moments during the ceremony. Like when Adam’s fiancée, Ryan, read a letter she wrote for him, telling him how much she’d miss her favorite napping partner and sous chef. And when Ryan’s sister, Kylie, read a poem then talked about how her sister sneaked out of a cabin to meet Adam that first night, the same night they apparently burned down a sauna. There were Adam’s nephew, Grant, and niece, Britta, constantly running over to Adam’s fiancée and sitting on her lap because, in their eyes, she is their “auntie.”
Maybe the most gripping moment came when Adam’s old high school coach, Mark DeCenzo, choked up and struggled to even start his speech. Adam’s mourning father, former UMD captain Davey Johnson, stood up, walked down the black carpet and joined DeCenzo, putting his arm around him and helping him get through his touching words.

Friends came from far and wide.
Winnipeg Jets ownership, led by Mark Chipman, arranged for a charter to fly Neal Pionk, Alex Iafallo, Dominic Toninato and Dylan Samberg to Hibbing for Sunday’s funeral mass and Monday’s celebration. St. Louis Blues defenseman Scott Perunovich also attended both and then hitched a ride with the Jets players back to St. Louis for Tuesday’s Jets-Blues game.
Also there Sunday were Wild president and general manager Bill Guerin, who signed Adam to the Penguins in 2017; Adam’s agent, Pete Rutili; former NHLer and current player agent Neil Sheehy; and Minnesota State coach Luke Strand and Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Jay Varady, who both coached Adam for USHL Sioux City.
University of Minnesota-Duluth coach Scott Sandelin spoke at Monday’s event and brought his entire team and staff. St. Cloud State coach Brett Larson was also there, as was Hibbing High’s hockey team.
Other players seen Monday included Henderson Silver Knights captain Jake Bischoff; the Colorado Eagles’ Riley Tufte; the Bridgeport Islanders’ Karson Kuhlman; the San Diego Gulls’ Nick Wolff and his girlfriend, Sydney Brodt, who in September was drafted by the new PWHL team in Minnesota; Bruins scout Parker MacKay; and former Minnesota Mr. Hockey Avery Peterson.
“Definitely had to be here. All of us,” said Tufte, who rushed back to Colorado on Monday night for a game Tuesday. “Can’t miss this. Not for this guy. We all loved him.”
Tumblr media
On Friday night against Ontario, one of Adam’s former teams, Tufte recorded his first professional hat trick.
“The first thing I thought about was Johns,” Tufte said. “Even the way the third one went in: off the goalie, off a defenseman’s shin and in. I know Adam pushed it in. It was insane. Something pretty special.”
Neal Pionk first became friends with Adam playing in the Minnesota high school Elite League, then at Sioux City, where they lit it up on the power play. They lived together while at UMD. Pionk said during the celebration that you knew Adam really loved you if he was unrelenting with his insults.
Pionk demonstrated their bond by repeating one of their last text messages after the Jets lost three of their first four games this season: “You’re off to an abysmal start. Pick it up.”
Said Pionk, “I’ll miss those texts every day.”
Neal’s dad, Scott, whose wife helped plan the Celebration of Life with other family friends, said his son is crushed.
“This is the first time as a young guy that he’s lost somebody that he’s really close to,” Scott said. “He’s shocked. He’s devastated.”
Scott, a close friend of Adam’s dad, first got to know Adam in ninth grade. Davey would every now and then ask Pionk to call his son to encourage him when things weren’t going well hockey-wise. Adam worked at Pionk’s hockey camps and helped him one summer at his landscaping company, so they had a bond.
“He was quiet. He liked to be alone a fair amount. And he liked to do things his own way,” Pionk said of Johnson. “He was a free spirit. I’ll put it this way: He was playfully grumpy. Because whatever you decided, he’d be like, ‘I don’t want to go there tonight.’ And then five minutes later, you’d get him in the car and he was laughing and the life of the party. So he played that role. Guys loved it.”
Adam was a terrific hockey player. He was a beautiful skater, taking after his uncle and fellow UMD alum Gary DeGrio, and ultra-skilled, especially in high school. Guerin recruited him for two years, hoping to sign him in Pittsburgh.
During development camp with the Penguins after his sophomore year of college, Adam met with Guerin and Penguins development coach Mark Recchi. They told him they loved him but to go back to school, have a great junior year and they’d be waiting to sign him after that season.
Guerin then returned to the stands. Hall of Famer and Penguins owner Mario Lemieux walked up to Guerin and asked, “Who’s that kid?”
He was pointing at Adam.
Guerin said, “That’s Adam Johnson. Beautiful skater, isn’t he? We’re going to send him back to UMD and sign him after the year.”
Lemieux said, “Well, you probably shouldn’t let him leave the building.”
Guerin responded, “Are you serious?”
Lemieux said, “Yeah, we need to sign guys like that.”
Guerin and Recchi went back downstairs, grabbed Adam when he left the ice and told him, “We understand we just told you we’re sending you back, but things have changed. Mind coming upstairs and meeting with a small group of us?”
Adam showered, changed and walked into a room. That “small group” was Guerin, Recchi, coach Mike Sullivan, CEO David Morehouse, general manager Jim Rutherford and none other than Mario Lemieux.
When Super Mario tells you he wants to sign you, you sign.
“Hey look, this kid was as hot a free agent as you could get,” Guerin said. “We just loved the way he could move, the way he skated, the way he frankly smiled. Like his teammates loved him. He fit everything we wanted. There was no B.S. to him. He was just a well-rounded, well-grounded, really good kid.”
Guerin’s voice began to crack.
“This is just such a sad story,” Guerin said. “Just so sad. Gone way too soon. He had his whole life ahead of him.”

The testimonials Monday were beautiful.
Johnson’s old Hibbing assistant coach and good friend Grant Clafton called him a “joyful grump” and said he had to be loving seeing Clafton look and feel so uncomfortable and nervous talking in front of a packed arena.
As funny as that was, he made everybody sob when talking about his broken heart that Adam and the love of his life, Ryan, wouldn’t get to create the life together they so deserved.
Sandelin always told Adam he wanted him to have the puck on his stick 90 percent of the time. He remembered his sly grin, his humility, his care for his teammates.
Moore talked about watching all of Adam’s assists this season for Nottingham and being so warmed by the selfless look and joy he had when his teammates scored.
Ebony Johnson, Adam’s sister-in-law — “not by choice,” Adam would joke — talked beautifully but also got everybody laughing when she admitted that their friendship actually began as rivals when they were each up for a third-grade fitness award.
As she remembered it, she could do more pushups than Adam.
Every speaker’s address touched on a similar theme: This was a tremendous person who also happened to be a tremendous hockey player.
As his cousin and former Hibbing teammate Michael Pechnovnik said, “Heaven’s hockey team gained a heckuva player.”

Four thousand miles away in Nottingham, Adam’s devastated and shaken Panthers teammates watched the live stream Monday.
It was proof of community, one that Nottingham’s Westin Michaud knows well.
He hails from Cloquet, Minn. — 70 miles away from Hibbing — and played with and against Adam in youth, high school, college and pro hockey.
Michaud was an eyewitness to the incident that injured and ultimately killed his friend and was at Adam’s side until the very end.
Michaud said this has been a tremendously challenging time for him and his teammates but the outpouring of love of support has been heartwarming and there’s no doubt watching Monday’s sense of community helped.
“It’s truly amazing how much hockey has impacted not only my life but also the lives of others who play the game, regardless of their skill level,” Michaud said via text. “It’s a community filled with people who genuinely care for and support each other.
“Hockey is more than just a game; it brings people together, ignites passions and provides a profound sense of purpose. Additionally, it unites communities and validates individuals as part of something greater, nurturing both a sense of belonging and purpose in life.”
Still, Monday was hard. “We’re all cried out. We’re hurting. We’re hurting really bad up here right now,” said Jim Perunovich, who was so broken up after Sunday’s mass, Adam’s mom, Sue, had to console him. “Nobody can understand it, but I guess God needed Adam more than we did.”
But what made Monday beautiful was the laughter, the celebration of Adam’s life with humor and memories, as well as music and P.A. announcements.
“That’s the way we roll up here,” Perunovich said.
There’s something special about the Iron Range, where hockey runs deep. Adam cared so much about the people here. He was proud to be from here and took a piece of Hibbing and brought it with him to the UK.
Tufte, for one, was not surprised at Hibbing’s perfectly executed celebration.
“Good ol’ Hibbing hockey community,” said Tufte, who went to high school three hours south at Blaine but attended UMD. “Can’t beat it.”
The celebration of life was live-streamed.

Don Johnson Filmography - Free Links!
Instead of you spending countless joyful hours trawling the web for grainy old '70s flicks, I did it for you! Here's a list of FREE places to watch DJ's stuff.
This list will be in reverse chronological order as they appear on IMDb. Some are just placeholders until (if) better links can be found, and some are bootlegs from other countries. I'm excluding music videos since those aren't hard to find.
And if you want to skip boring/annoying plot but don't want to miss him, I've made a key:
MC (main character) - much of the story involves his character and he is onscreen often
SC (side character) - only part of the story involves his character, so he's onscreen far less often than other characters
C (cameo) - he's got one or two scenes and they're small, in which case I'll mark his appearances in 0:00:00 format
I'm leaving most content warnings to viewer discretion, but some I don't feel comfortable ignoring. Also, some of the YouTube vids may get taken down at any moment :( If you like something, back it up! I'm using KMPlayer to download my faves, but I've heard you can also use VLC.
>> Links below cut! <<
First, check out my list from Tubi which has the most high quality versions of his work and TV appearances. If it's on Tubi, it won't be on this post!
Home Movie: The Princess Bride - (C, 0:41:30) the entire film is hilarious, especially if you've seen the original; made by a bunch of celebs during quarantine.
Knives Out - (SC) ok, there's no link, but i'm begging you to go buy this movie on DVD it's like $5-$10 tops in stores these days.
Moondance Alexander - (SC, 0:18:20)
Just Legal - (MC, eight episodes)
Word of Honor - (MC) this vid has "helium" audio and other insufferable flaws.
Goodbye Lover - (SC, login req)
In Pursuit of Honor - (MC) WARNING: animal death/abuse
G.I. Joe: The Movie - (SC, voice only, 0:30:35...) spare yourself, skip this movie that he probably did for his kid.
Tales of the Unexpected - (SC; one episode)
Matt Houston - (SC; one episode)
Melanie - (SC)
Soggy Bottom, U.S.A. - (SC; German dub) clips of his character.
Elvis and the Beauty Queen - (MC; Portuguese subtitles)
Revenge of the Stepford Wives - (SC, 0:12:40, 0:25:15...) he has multiple scenes including one at the end, but these movies stress me out.
Beulah Land - (SC) only in part 1, but his character is replaced by a young Jonathan Frakes in part 2. WARNING: non-graphic rape
From Here to Eternity - (C, one episode, 0:07:10, 0:36:00)
The Rebels (MC, two-parts)
Amateur Night at the Dixie Bar and Grill - (SC, 0:13:39...)
First, You Cry - (SC, first scene, 0:24:20, 0:44:20, 0:57:07, 1:15:38, 1:32:16)
Katie: Portrait of a Centerfold - (C, 0:19:48, 0:32:19, 0:44:03...) can't stomach this film to find the rest of his scenes, he's a very minor character.
The American Girls - he's not in this! the main male character is played by the lovely Charles Haid from Hillstreet Blues, but it isn't listed on Haid's IMDb. Also, the character he plays does not go by the name DJ is listed under for that episode, so maybe DJ's in a different one? Regardless, I only found two episodes and DJ is in neither.
Ski Lift to Death - (SC) he shows up in the second video...don't make me watch this.
What Really Happened to the Class of '65? - TV spot w/ the only footage of him that I can find.
Cover Girls - (SC, 0:27:21, 0:40:40, 01:01:15...)
The City - (MC) costarring Mark Hamil
Barnaby Jones - (SC, one episode) I watched this and now it's missing...it sucked anyway. DJ plays an amateur arms dealer with a sickly son, a wife in jail, and a hideous mustache. He loses.
The Streets of San Francisco - (SC, one episode)
Law of the Land - (MC)
Return to Macon County - (MC) login to YT req but there is also a Spanish dub that doesn't req login. costarring Nick Nolte
A Boy and His Dog - (MC) this version has the nude scenes edited out, sign in to YT for the full cut; much higher quality than Tubi. WARNING: rape, etc.
The Rookies - (SC, one episode) costarring Nick Nolte
Kung Fu - making an executive decision here uhhh skip this one
The Harrad Experiment - (MC; two-parter w/ odd in-video ads that you can easily fast forward) WARNING: they all get naked
The Bold Ones: The New Doctors - (MC, one episode)
Lollipops, Roses and Talangka - (SC; some scenes in Tagalog) can't find the 1975 sequel or much information on English sites, but one Filipino fanblog implies the film may no longer exist.
Zachariah (MC)
Endlessly impressed by how much has been preserved and curated over the years. Even if a ton of it was junk, it's nice to save people's hard work and memories :)

From Candice Miller's Simstagram
We've recently had a wake-up call with regards to modesty from our wonderful pastor, David Johnson! Rose was wearing clothes that was pulling attention from her joyful countenance and towards her body, and of course, we took her shopping immediately! Rose has such a heart for the Watcher and she was so mortified when she found out that she was causing her brothers to lust after her, she immediately agreed to cover up more, and has started dieting and working out so her shape will be less visible even with modest clothes. This is why it's so important to have a large, Watcher-honoring community around you, so you need to be accountable about your behavior. Sin, after all, thrives in secrecy! Protect your hearts and bodies!
