I'm learning blender! Here's some things I am learning/have found that makes it easier

Of course it's okay to vent about Blender and if you decide it still isn't for you after this, that's okay! This is just to show that it is possible to make it easier to use and learn with.

1. Youtube is not your friend (most of the time)

Youtube tutorials failed me so much, something about them just never, ever gave me that good of a result or clicked with me. Even though there's a meme about it sponsoring everything, Skillshare tutorials are so much easier to follow and learn from. I've only done a few, but they're just so much better. Start with John Knowles or Southern Shotty and go from there. I'm sure other paid services will bring you "there" too. If you can't pay for them, idk where to "sail the seas" for that content...

That being said, youtube is good for smaller things, such as "how to do x setting" or "how to achieve x look". Just not the grander scheme of blender know-how.

2. If the blender ui confuses you, use BforArtists

Bforartists is a fork of blender that adds many UI tweaks and a couple addons to make your blender experience a whole lot easier. Just make sure when installing to set your keybinds to blender's to follow along tutorials.

It's really great, my favorite feature it has (that I'm not sure if vanilla blender has) is quick favorites to quickly do actions without keybinds or searching around.

3. Set a cool theme besides the defaults

I hate blender's default theme. There is little to no contrast, and everything sorta blends together. Which makes editing projects a lot more difficult in the long run.

The theme may look fine on the surface...

But once you create a larger/more complex project it becomes difficult!

Luckily, blender comes with some built in themes and has a good theme community (for example, a lot of the free ones can be found here). If you just like to get started here's mine made up of a combination of themes (note: it's about as complete as my experiences in blender):

I like my UIs old school and colorful because it makes it easier to see what I am doing. However, there's a lot of "modern" themes that add similar levels of contrast.

Some examples:

Deep gray calm

Maya 2022

Pheonixart Fusion

Presto

Splash blue

Momo

There's even a theme out there made specifically to be high contrast. I personally find it a bit much, but some people swear by it.

Alien Pink

If setting a theme isn't enough for contrast, consider doing these settings

This will randomize the colors of your objects and wireframe in the viewport wireframe and viewport solid modes.

4. Set your own default startup

I suggest doing this after you have some time in blender, but setting up your own default setup saves a lot of time and memorizing things.

To do so either do

File > Defaults > Save Startup File (vanilla blender)

or

Edit > Save startup file (BforArtists)

This will make every new project you start the same exact settings.

Here's a brief screenshot of mine for example:

Basically if tutorials repeat something a lot, it's worth it to make a new startup file based on some "common procedures" or the workspaces you like to use the most.
