nother tangent with a ridiculous source and conclusion
i hadnt thought of TP Link having an Ordonian accent for a long time (its been literal years since i last played TP) but it got me thinking like, if Link in BotW was actually from Hateno would he have a bumpkin/provincial accent too fbsjd
i jusy brought this up with a pal and we agreed that yes and bumpkin Link is superior in all its forms, but since i really got kickstarted back into Zelda content & community as a whole through an Irish youtuber and streamer, i literally cannot hear BotW Link's dialogue as anything but slightly put-out Irish lad now lol
im not mad about it either

for all that it's very clear RWBY took influence from a lot of anime, the writers sure don't seem to have learned much of anything from it. i'm watching the redub of the classic sailor moon anime right now, and it's insane to me how much better this thirty-year-old anime packed with filler was at things like character arcs and believably redeeming villains and having a main character that is at once childish and yet a great leader who, when the chips are down, could talk some of the worst evils in the universe down from their plans.
if anyone could talk salem out of her plans for world annihilation by just being able to love her, it's usagi tsukino.
Right? Man, I'd pay for a high-budget, animated version of that crossover lol.
That's one of the big arguments of the Why RWBY is Disappointing vid though, using Cowboy Beebop as an example, if I remember correctly. There's no doubt that RWBY has been influenced by a number of classic series, but deliberately mimicking something that worked in another show doesn't guarantee success, particularly if you don't understand why it worked in the first place. I'm constantly emphasizing that stories are whole products made up of a thousand smaller pieces, like a puzzle or a patchwork quilt, and simply slapping one piece down because it looks good in another story isn't enough. You have to carefully build everything around that piece so that it fits into the unified whole. Continuity, world building, characterization, setup... RWBY is very good at throwing out those "cool" moments, but it does none of the work ahead of time (or, just as often, after the fact) to make those moments satisfying outside of the initial adrenaline rush of watching.
Plus, RWBY is over-crowded nowadays. Characters, mysteries, real world issues, and those "cool" ideas have populated like bunnies until, I think, it's easy for a lot of fans to just get swept up in the spectacle of it all. The simpler your story is, the less there is to hide behind, which is why I think a lot of manga like Sailor Moon still rings true 30+ years later. If you do right by your core concepts and prove to the reader (often subconsciously) that your storytelling skills are strong, it will resonate even after new generations have different expectations in their media, or these ideas have become "cliche" in wake of that initial popularity. If we go with a food comparison (always my favorite lol) Sailor Moon makes me think of something like good home cooking. Looking at it now it's simple, it's straightforward, it has some technical flaws, but the comparatively low number of ingredients have all been treated stunningly well and there is an insane amount of love poured into the dish. Meanwhile, later seasons of RWBY feel like a semi-successful restaurant serving a special so long it took the server a week to fully memorize it, rattling off an absurd number of ingredients and fancy techniques used until you're not even sure what the dish is supposed to be anymore. Some diners go, "Wow, what an amazing, clearly high-end dish! And they've included this super rare ingredient which means it must be good." Meanwhile, others are going, "... Honestly, that sounds like Too Much. I'd have preferred a simple, well-done pasta." And all the while the restaurant—which is pretty big and popular now, garnering a lot of critical attention—is trying to pass this complicated, fancy-for-the-sake-of-fancy dish off as the product of a humble, mom-and-pop establishment. No, you used to serve that kind of food: simple, technically flawed in a lot of ways, but with so much love poured into the dish that most diners didn't care. Now people suspect that your chefs are miserable and we definitely know they're overworked, so even if that insane dish would have tasted great to certain pallets, it was doomed before it even left the kitchen.

I'm sure there's at least a little nostalgia involved but I genuinely think that some of those edited-for-tv subs of kids anime had some of the best, most fitting dub casts even - some of them had better voice casts than they had any right to. Joshua Seth as Tai Kamiya? Iconic. Veronica Taylor as Ash Ketchum? Iconic. Joseph Motiki as Metabee? Iconic. If Ikki Tenryou doesn't sound like a character from Arthur I send it back. If Yugioh is completely faithfully redubbed and Katsuya Jonouchi doesn't have a New York accent I send it back. There were a ton of misses from that era (lol One Piece) but man when they got it right, they got it right.

I saw this Sailor Moon Redub clip ages ago on Twitter (rip), and I've been wanting to remake it with the crew since. Equinox and Minerva do fight like Usagi and Rei, so it fits extremely well lol 😂
Also, look at Kitty-Kat being a cat for once 🥺💕 He's literally so cute in that form. I totally get why all the girls are so charmed by him and like to dress him up in lil outfits (both as a human and as a cat).

Otakon 2023 Wrap-Up Post!
Otakon 2023 was this past weekend, and I gotta say I had a great time! (if that wasn’t obvious. From the deluge of posts about the digimon movie redubs). That was the main reason I went this year, and the screening took up a significant portion of my time there (WORTH. EVERY. MILLISECOND.), but during my one day I was able to blitz through the main halls as well. And I met @ahiddenpath ! That was AWESOME!!! She’s incredibly sweet, and we got to walk through Artist Alley together and talk (irl!!!) about Digimon, fandom, and life ☺️
Tumblr media
My con haul!! I was like, “eh, it’s not that much” but some might beg to differ, including me, now that I look at it all together 😅 Most of it came from the Dealer’s Hall. There is one vendor who is a huge Digimon fan herself and sells a TON of amazing digi-merch, and that’s where most of my money went, ahahaha. She not only had some amazing hard-to-get figures and blind boxes (the Adv. kigurumi figures and Piedmon keychain set), but some Frontier 20th Anniversary merch as well! HOW CAN I SAY NO TO THAT??? That is a GIANT TAKUYA ACRYLIC STAND (which I would prefer to be a bit smaller), but aaah!!!! 🤩 I randomly got Sora from a blind box (💖), as well as Koji-in-pajamas (!!), and spent a little extra to get Takeru unwrapped. Unwrapped Jyou was the same price as a random blind box, because she said no one wants him and she always has extras! Can you believe it?? JYOU! 😭 Hidden and I agree that she’s not reaching enough of this audience on Tumblr, because HOW DO YOU NOT LOVE JYOU? Look at his face! He HAD to come home with me 😤
Ahem. Anyway, I found those oldschool Fox Kids-looking vinyl clings at a separate stall that sold a lot of vintage 90s stuff. Dub merch!! I do have a small collection of that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pencil-board… folder… thing… is two-sided and I believe it was originally an extra with a specific issue of Animedia that covered both tri and Appmon! I had to. Because APPMON (also I do love that tri art) 🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some close-ups of the small stuff! The resin statue of the mountains came from Artist Alley (actually, a friend of Hidden!) because it reminds me of home. I also really liked the moon-shaped pendant. And a citrus pin! MY BRAND!! I have a shirt with Togemon on it (the cactus), but I have a hard time finding citrus merch, so YES, I can now rep my full screen name in an outfit 👍👍👍 One lone Goomy pin is my sole Pokemon purchase this year. “Hen with a Tie” cracked me up (if you’re an anime dinosaur like me, you know), and the Mimi button was actually a gift from Hidden! 😭
Tumblr media
Finally, Takeru and Jyou side-by-side, where they belong ☺️ The contrast of their poses/expressions cracks me up!
Takeru: I think I’ll cause problems on purpose.
Jyou: NOOOOO PLS MY BLOOD PRESSURE!!!!
So there you have it: the results of an intense and incredibly exciting digi-day! I’m still so shocked that my local con got this amazing premiere, and I got to watch the whole thing (er… when I wasn’t live-texting information to certain people who couldn’t be there in person, lol!). I’m SO incredibly grateful to the Discord group for notifying me about it, because otherwise I probably wouldn’t have even gone to the con at all this year!
Really hoping I can see my OG con buddy either at Otakon 2024 or her local con, so she can take a well-earned break from being a new mom and join in on the fun! 🤞🤞🤞

Otakon 2023
Lil ramblin' about the con beneath the cut! But above the cut, my spoils!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I haven't been to a con since NYC Comicon in 2015, so this was a ride!
Amazing Stuff:
-Meeting @citrus-cactus at the Digimon redubbed movies screening! It was so amazing to meet her after being in the same online community for... Like... God, who even knows, like ten years?!?!?! And she is so lovely!
-THE DIGIMON REDUBBED MOVIES SCREENING!!! More on that here!
-My haul above! A sweet lil Kou-chan figure and a Luna plush from the dealer's room and an artbook from Shouri and a Sonic keychain from the artist's alley!
Not my fave stuff and neutral observations:
For reference, I went to Otakon all three days from roughly age 14 straight through college?? Well, in college it would have been Sat/Sun only. After that, I guess I didn't go that often, but any comparisons I make are to that time period (roughly 2003-2011 ish).
The DC convention center as a venue:
-The convention center was easy to get to from the Metro!
-The building was much bigger and better able to handle the crowd than the Baltimore Convention Center.
-There was. NO SIGNAGE. WHATSOEVER. For ANYTHING. Absolutely horrendous. What there WERE were volunteers/employees who bellowed directly into your face to... Do the things you were already doing. Or to... Walk the other way around the pillar. Because the other side leads into the faerie realm or some shit, idek.
-The guide books used to have maps, schedules, opening and closure times, etc. There was a map in this guidebook, but the opening and closing times for different parts of the cons and the event schedule were not printed. Meaning I had to use my phone to know, for example, when and where the Digimon screening event was... And there was poor reception the dealer's room in the lowest level.
Although the event schedule site couldn't load, I was blessed that some of Citrus' discord messages were getting through. She alerted me that the screening room was filling up and told me the room number (bless!!!! Thank!!!).
The con compared to ones I remember:
-I was shocked that there was a digimon panel and two separate Digimon screenings in one day? And the Digimon movie redub screening event was full to capacity- I missed the first film because I was next in line at the shut door D: So, like, Digimon is alive, and I saw two Daisuke cosplays, a Ken cosplay, and someone with a Patamon plush attached to their baseball cap. Patahat! There wasn't much merch. Citrus spotted the main place offering digimerch and sent me there (I got the Kou figure there). She also saw the lone Digimon fanart in Artist's Alley, and we found someone who made baby stage plushes. Another dealer's room place had some vintage plushies of the digimon that looked... like they had been through... some stuff.
Basically, Digimon seems to still be very much alive in terms of audience interest, but not so much the merch and fan art. I don't know what to make of that.
-The con seemed a lot less lively than the ones I remember. I only saw a few interesting cosplays (like the kind where you go, how did they even do that?!). My husband pointed out that the hall is far larger, however, and that the cosplay folks have tons of photo studio rooms to go to. They were likely there.
-The extra space was deeply appreciated (compared to what I'm used to from the Baltimore days), but... Okay, so the Dealer's Room provided empty space. Every aisle had an end area to "pull over in," whether it's for a water or food break, a photo op, or to wait for your bud to make a purchase.
PEOPLE STILL STOPPED DEAD DIRECTLY IN THE MAIN THROUGHWAY. WHY. WOULD YOU DO THAT. PLEASE I AM BEGGING-
My husband says I'm dreaming if I think the provided empty space will stop people from doing that, lol!
-DEMON SLAYER. EVERYTHING IS DEMON SLAYER. THERE IS NOTHING BUT DEMON SLAYER. Look, I enjoy Demon Slayer too, but good gracious, it's clearly the Naruto of the 2020s in terms of popularity.
-I learned who Rem is. Good God there were a lot of Rem figures.
-Looking at my purchases, I bought for three "classic" IPs and supported an artist I've followed for a long time. No new stuff. And I'd say the merch overall was about half "vintage" stuff and half newer stuff. Lots of Sailor Moon, DBZ, Pokemon, etc.
General Con Hardships:
-So a friend suggested to me recently that I might have sensory issues. I balked, because jfc have you seen my list of issues, please don't suggest another, I beg, I am full up, can I have some less sir.
Uh basically she mentioned how much she used to love going to the movies and I said, "I don't go anymore, I can't understand the voice audio." And she was like- Okay so it's true that some movies don't mix sound properly and can't be understood well, but if it's all movies... Um, babe, I think that's an auditory processing issue.
She suggested I get ear plugs, and god DAMN I wish I had them at the con.
Riding in the metro in tunnels? The whoosing and clanking hurt. Volunteers absolutely bellowing in your face at the con? Look, I guess it's their job, but please I am going to cry if you scream in my face like that. People playing music at the loudest volume in the dealer's room and hallways? Why, why would you do that. Someone was walking around playing an ocarina on the way to the dealer's room, so I was stuck with her for about 10-15 min, and I genuinely wanted to lock the damn thing in her backpack on a timer somehow, lmao. Look, ocarinas are easy enough to get the correct note out of, but they are difficult to control tonally. That high-pitched, harsh PHWEEEE noise clawed at my ears.
Of course, you can't control other people. The best I can do is accommodate myself to suit the place I'm going, which means... The damned ear plugs.
Apparently sensory issues and anxiety go hand-in-hand, as of course people feel stressed if the signals around them aren't being processed in the "typical" way, causing strain.
So... The con was exhausting and just... Difficult. But! I'm really glad I went! And I'll just buy the gd earplugs, here's what was recommended to me.
Also, PS: I found a piece of rare digimon merch that was way out of my budget at a dealer's room stand. But when I came home and looked it up, I found it for 35% less (which, at this price point, was a lot). AND NOW I HAVE AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE ON THE WAY AND I CANNOT WAIT TO SHOW YOU! Also, honestly check the retail on stuff in the dealer's room before you buy, this must be why there's no reception down there-
I am ready to not attend a con until next year! But to also go next year! Maybe I'll meet more of my online pals!!!! :D

Top 3 Studio Ghibi movies?
Just cause it is fun to randomly interact : )
A good one! But also a loaded one cause I got FEELINGS about a particular one.
1.) Whisper of the Heart. There’s the main popular ones of course but this is underrated I feel. It’s unique in that it actually has a love story that is intended in it for an early Ghibli production, but it still keeps the same familiar vibe that they are known for for a slice of life piece.
2.) Howl’s Moving Castle. Something not really known for some is this is based off of a book by Diana Wynn Jones, which is one of my favorites. It’s not completely firm to the source material but seeing a film adaptation of a book I love makes me a little closer to this one in particular than others.
3.) Lastly this one is loaded with nostalgia for me as it was a cassette tape I used to carry around in the early 90’s I loved it so much: Totoro. HOWEVER. I get heated about this because the version I grew up on is not the one everyone knows. At some point Disney bought the english rights to Ghibli so all of dubs that are popular were done by them, including Totoro. What is not known however is that Totoro already had one. From the EIGHTIES. Back then there was a version that had been dubbed for flights to Japan for visiting foreigners to watch, and is known as the Fox dub. I grew up with this version so everything from the songs to even the sound of the catbus is COMPLETELY different and completely wrong in the updated version if you compare them ( you can look it up on youtube). It upsets me because the Disney dub is the only one people know due to copyright (they HAD to redub it in the change over) and I’ll forever bitch about it lol. I finally found a DVD version of mine and it was very very expensive, but it’s one of my most cherished things I own now.

Took myself to see Madame Web as a silly treat for Valentine’s Day and here are my thoughts in bullet list form:
Why did it sound like everyone in the movie redubbed their lines
Can’t believe Emma Robert’s is now reduced to bit part in Sony Marvel film lols
Yes girls give us nothing
Reinforced my universal conspiracy theory that if you’re a single woman in your 30’s with no children than a child will be assigned to you.
It WAS bad

the fact that power rangers is a thing is so wild tbh
like not in a bad way but like the whole base concept of the franchise being 'yeah so it's a live-action kid's superhero show but also we take footage from this japanese live-action kid's superhero show and redub and reuse that footage in our show' is like pretty wild lol

Justice for Hellena Taylor!!!
Justice for ALL voice actors right now, honestly.
This is the kind of stuff people should be talking about when it comes to voice acting, not 'Lol, maybe if we bully Illumination enough, they'll redub Chris Pratt's lines for the Mario movie~'

X'D This is a redub of The Last Dragon on Earth by some Japanese kids I randomly found. They misread the title and have no idea what the episode is about. They are intentionally being silly of course but I was literally crying with laughter over their total surprise and confusion. Highlights:
They misread the title and think the episode is about the End of the World.
They also take forever to figure out that the dragon is a dragon and keep calling it a sea horse
They don't know what a fishing float is, but Moomintroll's VA figures it out first and says to Snufkin "Wait, you're just making that without even knowing what it is??"
Snufkin tells Moomintroll not to touch him because he is a germaphobe and touching dirty things like Moomintroll makes him break out in hives xD Moomintroll says "I never knew that about you"
Dragon introduces himself as "Saburou"
When Saburou eats the fly, he says "This is to avenge my parents"
Saburou breathes not fire but potassium cyanide. Snufkin happily declares that potassium cyanide tea is tasty and that he is immune to it, and then sticks a tea cup over Saburou x'DD
The boys have no idea what Moomintroll is doing, so he's just running between his room and the dining room over and over with the dumbest excuses. They strive for some form of continuity but they just can't get it
The voice-over boys make fun of the way Little My eats and the timing of her milk bubbles is perfect lol
Little My (breaking the fourth wall) suddenly says "Didn't you mistake the title of this episode?" and Moomintroll blames it on Moominpappa and suddenly starts crying
Snufkin vows to protect Saburou for life, then immediately sells him to the boater for 80,000 yen and shoves the boat away while demanding the money be transferred to his bank account lmao
Snufkin praises his own hairstyle as "like Johnny's" (the J-pop boy band company)
Moomintroll asks "where's Saburou" and Snufkin says "oh I sold him to a strange woman"
Snufkin offers to sell Moomintroll his fishing poll for 80,000 yen and Moomintroll shocks his VA by taking it x'D
sorry if none of this is funny to anyone but me... I can't get over how confused the boys are by what happens in the episode and the coincidentally perfect timing of a few of their jokes with the animation lol
