A Map of Etheria (and other details)
Hi everyone! If you've been following me for a while you would know I was working on a map of Etheria, but I never ended up finishing it.
Then, I noticed I was nearing 1,000 hits on my fic Alliance of the Heart, so I decided I would remake it and type up some things about each country.
Also, thank you to everyone who created the She-Ra Fan Wiki because it came in clutch for this map.
Anyway, here's my info dumping about my head cannons regarding the geographical features of each land.
Tumblr media
Etheria
Etheria is a planet about the size of Venus located on the outskirts of the Eternian Solar System. Since it is so far away from the Ethernian sun, the planet is sustained by its moons and the magically created heat they give off.
Each moon gives off a certain temperature, so the different climates are based on what moons travel over the most.
Bright Moon
Bright Moon is the third largest kingdom in Etheria, but they are the richest. They are located in the middle of all the major countries, meaning they are a crossroad for trade among the kingdoms. They also possess the territories of Mystacor and the Whispering Woods.
The climate is temperate and is akin to a cool spring season. The country has mostly different types of forests and meadows with some rivers and lakes scattered around.
Salineas
Salineas is the second largest kingdom in the form of an archipelago. The northern part is cooler with more rocky beaches, and as you head south the area becomes progressively more tropical with sandy beaches. The country has some mountains in the valleys when you get inland, but the country is mostly flat.
The country is also located on a tectonic plate line, so whenever the weapon inside Etheria is fired, more islands are created.
The Kingdom of Snows
TKOS is the largest kingdom of Etheria and is almost completely covered in snow. Despite being the largest country, it has a population that is close to Scorponi. The people live mostly on the coast and in large cities.
Dryl
Dryl is a country that spans the largest mountain range on Etheria with a couple of clearings. Its population lives under the mountains in one of the Six "Systems" of Dryl, which are large, carved-out areas within and under the mountains, containing the homes and mines of Dryl. As of the beginning of the series, the Crypto Castle is the only structure on the surface.
The climate is relatively cool, with more snow as you travel further north. The area also has large patches of pine forests and other small shrubs and flowers.
Scorponi
Outside of the Fright Zone, which was the site of an ancient meteor crash, the kingdom of Scorponi is relatively dry. It's relatively flat with expansive planes, sparse forests, and a couple of canyons.
The Crimson Waste
The Crimson Waste is a desert area with large patches of cacti, rocky areas, and large canyons.
Plumeria
Plumaris is one of the small countries with the smallest population with most of the area consisting of agriculture, forests, and flower fields.
Another aspect is the territory they technically have a claim over is an area I created called The Out Fields, which is where the Watch Tower is located and where Hordak found Adora. It's a large, expansive area of tall grass.
The Unnamed Kingdom
The Unnamed Kingdom belongs to Spinnerella and Netossa, which used to be two before the girls got married. The kingdom has a climate similar to Dryl with its own Mountains and forests.
Sweet Bee and Peekablue's Islands
These are tropical islands out of the way of the other kingdoms, helping them stay out of the way of the war. They are considered humid by Etherian standards and are densely forested with many flowers and fruit trees.
The Star Sister's Island
This is a collection of islands similar to the Kingdom of Snows with a cold temperature and mountain terrain.
Beast Island
Beast Island is off the coast of Scorponi and used to be an information hub for the Eternians. As time went on, water damage corroded the tech, causing it to corrupt and branch out into the forest and create the virus affecting the island.
Conclusion
If anyone wants to use this map, please ask me (and maybe tag me because I want to see what you need it for). Also, you can adopt as many headcannons as you want, but I would like some sort of acknowledgment if you use my idea of the Outfields.
Also, if you made it this far, thank you for reading and your patience regarding me creating this

Sympathy for the Devil; part 2
discord got me to finally write a connecting scene, so here! have some more of this nonsense au now based only vaguely on the blacklist! [part 1]
~~
“Alright. What do we know about him?”
Luo Qingyang stands at the back of the small conference room facing the large projector screen on the opposite wall. Her uniform jacket is draped over the back of the chair in front of her, and her fingers curl and uncurl of their own volition, kneading the dark blue fabric into the cushion beneath it. This is not what she expected her morning to look like.
Her team -- her and Lan Wangji’s team, now -- is gathered at the table in front of her.
Nie Zonghui has several stacks of photocopied notes spilling out of an open manilla folder, two highlighters, four sizes of sticky notes, and a legal pad in front of him. He has blue ink on his neck where the tip of the pen resting behind his ear rubs whenever he turns his head to the left. Frustration rolls off of him in waves.
Lan Jingyi is typing rapidly on his CBC-issued laptop which is angled toward Luo Qingyang just enough that she can see he has six different windows open and is in desperate need of at least two external monitors. The overworked fan is almost louder than his heavy-handed, caffeine-fuelled typing. He’s twisting back and forth in the swivel chair, dragging his toes across the carpet, but swivels to a stop at her question.
Qin Su stands off to Luo Qingyang’s right, placing photos -- mostly grainy or blurred -- in an ever expanding evidence map. At the top, with a dozen or so threads leading away from its pin, is a crisp, clean, photo of a man wearing an approximation of the CBC Academy uniform, smiling brilliantly at the camera. Beneath him, the title card reads: Yiling Laozu, Wei Wuxian.
“Yiling Laozu?” asks Lan Jingyi, one foot tapping out a vague rhythm against the leg of the conference table.
Luo Qingyang restrains her eyeroll, only because she can see that at least four of the open windows on his laptop are chasing down information regarding Yiling Laozu’s associates, rather than the demonic kingpin himself.
“Yeah,” she says. “Break it down for me.”
“Well,” says Qin Su, moving from the board to the open folio near her, “he’s a bit of a recluse, so we don’t actually know a lot.”
Her folio is much better organized than Nie Zonghui’s.
“Start with the basics.”
Qin Su nods, “Right. Yiling Laozu. Wanted for-- basically every kind of spiritual crime known to the CBC. He invented the Ghost Path in his late teens or early twenties, we think. It’s unclear, what with all of the rumor and suspicion and superstition around even saying his name--”
“Yeah, he really looks like a boogeyman…” says Nie Zonghui. He’s stressed. They should never have sent him into the room with Wei Wuxian.
Lan Jingyi says, “Hot boogeyman. If you ask me--”
Luo Qingyang clears her throat pointedly. “Nobody did. Moving on?”
“Yup!”
Qin Su points to Lan Jingyi who taps a few keys on his -- very abused -- keyboard and takes over the projector. He throws several pages up on the wall, photos with short but damning rap sheets.
“Known associates include Gui Jiangjun and Mo Daifu,” she says, indicating the sheets labeled Wen Qionglin and Wen Qing respectively.
She points to Lan Jingyi again and a very low-light black and white shot comes up center-screen. It shows a man who could potentially be Wei Wuxian entering a building that is definitely Two Fans. The brilliant green of the sign is lost, but it is plenty readable. “He has been seen entering the Headshaker’s club on several occasions, but any actual association remains speculative at best.”
Nie Zonghui shrugs in the corner of Luo Qingyang’s eye. “He might just have good taste in venues.”
All three other agents in the room turn to look at him, brows quirked or furrowed or raised to different degrees.
Nie Zonghui shrugs again, “What? It’s a nice club.”
--
Wei Wuxian rubs at the zip tie dent around the outside of his wrists. He plays it up a little, wincing and groaning just enough to be heard.
Still, Lan Wangji doesn’t look at him.
It’s fine.
He follows the CBC Director and field agents out of the interrogation room and down a long, boring hallway. Lan Qiren and the other cultivator break off through one of the nondescript doors -- room 129-9, Wei Wuxian notes out of habit -- and then it’s just Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian following Lan Wangji. Down a long, boring hallway.
It feels like old times. Especially as Wei Wuxian finds his eyes… wandering.
The Bureau slacks look unfairly good on Lan Wangji, blue wool hugging tight to the curves of his legs and ass in a way no law enforcement uniform should ever be allowed to do. It’s rude. He must get them tailored.
Lan Wangji leads him through another nondescript door -- room 157-3 -- which opens up into a large bullpen. Heads swivel in their direction, eyes snagging on Wei Wuxian and his casual state of dress. Everybody else in here is wearing uniforms in one state of undress or another, while Wei Wuxian is wearing ripped black jeans and a heather red v-neck. Hopefully he’ll get his jacket back soon. He spent a good amount of time stitching talismans into it; he’d like not to have wasted the effort.
Eyes un-snag; heads swivel back toward screens. Wei Wuxian remembers the strength of Lan Wangji’s glare and he imagines it’s only become more powerful with age and seniority. He can practically feel the shiver up his own spine.
Or maybe that is a shiver up his spine.
It’s strangely nostalgic, being here, even though Wei Wuxian is fairly certain he has never been in this particular room before. But that doesn’t really matter. The layout is the same, the furniture is the same, even the smell is the same. The computers have been updated, at least, but not within this decade.
Lan Wangji’s office is nice. Clean and minimalist, as expected. Stark white walls, a meticulously curated bookcase, and a matching walnut and glass-top desk. No pictures, no wall art, not even a particularly fancy name plate. The closest thing to a personal touch anywhere in the room is the tea set Lan Wangji’s mother made for him before she died. Wei Wuxian’s fingertips still remember the soft, inexpert curves of the cups.
The door clicks closed behind him and the silence that settles is almost crushing.
Tension pulls the lines of Lan Wangji’s shoulder blades toward the middle of his back, which is still turned to Wei Wuxian. His hands slowly curl into fists by his side.
A familiar ache twists in Wei Wuxian’s gut -- has been twisting in his gut for almost an hour now. The ache for Lan Wangji’s eyes to be on him. The ache for his attention, for his reaction. Anything, really. Since the day he met Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian has always just wanted to break through that barrier Lan Wangji puts around himself, and to really touch him.
Metaphorically.
And literally, but that’s something else.
Probably.
Now, Lan Wangji’s long braid shifts across the navy fabric of his uniform coat as he turns his head to the side, the shining plait slipping like snake scales through water. Wei Wuxian holds his breath, waiting for the bite. He watches the tension held in Lan Wangji’s jaw forcibly release, and then, finally:
“Wei Ying.”

Srsly stop making Caspian so loveable I am this close 🤏 to searching him on Google maps and showing up at his door with a tuppaware-tub containing his favourite dessert home cooked
Jokes on u anon he was waiting for u at the door with YOUR favorite homecooked meal and a very well made personally tailored welcome-home gift basket,(bec ur moving in duh) you'd open the door to see him standing there, rose clutched between his teeth like this
Tumblr media
Alternatively you genuinely do surprise him with his favorite treat and the wall of a man is frozen on the spot. You're speaking his love language now and have, in his eyes anyway, delacred your undying love for him. You'd think he won the lottery with how bright he lights up, ushering you inside, taking your coat, he'd handle the gift with utmost care as he sets it down to truly appreciate later,(you bet ur ass he's keeping at least one of the treats to preserve and add to his ever-growing shrine to you) always the drama queen he quickly spins to take you in his arms, the flurry of kisses he trails over your face and cheeks brings the sweetest laughter from your lips pulling him all the more deeper in his spiral, you'd get to see his mouth twitch and his eyes water as he tries to handle all the big feelings coming through him, he'd whisper his thanks in between kisses, showing you his immense gratitude the best way he knows how😈
Don't be surprised if he's searching up wedding venues later that night and not so subtly checking you for ring sizes

I know Mile and Apo fans are their main fanbase and bread and butter but they should have done the press tour very differently if BOC didn't want Mansuang to be viewed as a BL film. Apo and Bas should have been teamed up for the press tour along with Mile and Tong. All four should have gone abroad for the overseas premiers and even if not for one of the big magazines like vogue should have done more interviews and photoshoots together (all 4) for the movie. They should have played around with the pairing a lot more for the press tour. Bas and Tong had massive parts in the movie and according to critics did very well in the movie. They should have been promoted more in their own press tour for their film. The intention of Mansuang was a Mile Apo movie but that clearly isn't what the end product was and they should have promoted it as an ensemble film. This is not even taking into account the actual veteran actors and actresses in the film that got absolutely 0 press. Let the women and older actors in your film actually promote the film to their own fans and that demographic? People don't go to the movies just for young good looking men. They actually had a lot to work with and I think Mansuang would have done a lot better locally if they hadn't completely blown the marketing for this film in a rushed few weeks with overloaded content that followed the BL marketing handbook that they used for KP.
the lack of acknowledgement of the veteran actors on the posters and in the trailer was something @moerusai and I both noticed and talked about. I think we mainly kept quiet at the time because there was soooo much complaining, from the size of the characters on the poster to how often the specific posters rotated at what venues, it just would be piling on legitimate issues on top of petty complaints.
there were well known, well respected actors in the cast who would've been an audience draw. I have a handful of actors I'll go to see a film for, *knowing* they're playing a side character (thinking mainly of Tom Hardy and Ben Whishaw here, who shine as leads and support).
Mile and Apo both made jokes about how difficult it must have been for the artist who made the Man Suang posters to have worked with Pond. there's many fan accounts of Pond's perfectionism in running KPWT... he often seems myopic on perfectionism to the point of missing the main points (here, having a poster that pleased him over missing the overarching man suang marketing campaign...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also miss actor mileapo... 😔
not to make riches out of others' misfortune but the WGA strike and the SAG strike did potentially help in getting them on the map prior to White Lotus scripting and casting. There was already some momentum in getting them into the show as guest actors. If that happened it would be a wonderful way for them to get into a series where they're not doing the heavy lifting end to end of fundraising / script development all the way through coming up with marketing. 🙃
the problem with the fandom and having inherited the attitude of entitled musician / kpop fandoms is the constant hunger for new content and getting to see them. film / series take a lot more time to develop. you can drop a single or music videos in preparation for the launch of an album or just as a stand alone single, and most fans just don't seem to recognize that discrepancy in the lift. there were toxic apc solos complaining in August about how the year is "almost over" and Apo had "nothing" as though he didn't spend the majority of the year working on the movie.
anyway the hunger for content makes product promo much more accessible and bite sized... people just aren't patient enough. so many people were mad and antsy when MA were shooting man suang and trying to limit spoilers by showing very little that they threw fits over there not being new content when MA were literally working on the content that is the main dish of the whole meal.
anyway. yeah I agree. fingers crossed the uni icon product will go through relatively quick production and white lotus will pick them 🤞

Scientists discover molten layer covering Martian core
NASA’s InSight mission to Mars helped scientists map out Mars’ internal structure, including the size and composition of its core, and provided general hints about its tumultuous formation.
But findings from a new paper published in the journal Nature could lead to reanalysis of that data. An international team of researchers discovered the presence of a molten silicate layer overlying Mars’ metallic core—providing new insights into how Mars formed, evolved and became the barren planet it is today.
Published on October 25, 2023, the team’s paper details the use of seismic data to locate and identify a thin layer of molten silicates (rock-forming minerals that make up the crust and mantle of Mars and Earth) lying between the Martian mantle and core. With the discovery of this molten layer, the researchers determined that Mars’ core is both denser and smaller than previous estimates, a conclusion that better aligns with other geophysical data and analysis of Martian meteorites.
Vedran Lekic, a professor of geology at the University of Maryland and co-author of the paper, compared the molten layer to a ‘heating blanket’ covering the Martian core.
“The blanket not only insulates the heat coming from the core and prevents the core from cooling, but also concentrates radioactive elements whose decay generates heat” Lekic said. “And when that happens, the core is likely to be unable to produce the convective motions that would create a magnetic field—which can explain why Mars currently doesn’t have an active magnetic field around it.”
Without a functional protective magnetic field around itself, a terrestrial planet such as Mars would be extremely vulnerable to harsh solar winds and lose all the water on its surface, making it incapable of sustaining life. Lekic added that this difference between Earth and Mars could be attributed to differences in internal structure and the different planetary evolution paths the two planets took.
“The thermal blanketing of Mars’ metallic core by the liquid layer at the base of the mantle implies that external sources are necessary to generate the magnetic field recorded in the Martian crust during the first 500 to 800 million years of its evolution,” said the paper’s lead author Henri Samuel, a scientist with the French National Center for Scientific Research. “These sources could be energetic impacts or core motion generated by gravitational interactions with ancient satellites which have since then disappeared.”
The team’s conclusions support theories that Mars was at one time a molten ocean of magma that later crystallized to produce a layer of silicate melt enriched in iron and radioactive elements at the base of the Martian mantle. The heat emanating from the radioactive elements would then have dramatically altered the thermal evolution and cooling history of the red planet.
“These layers, if widespread, can have pretty big consequences for the rest of the planet,” Lekic said. “Their existence can help tell us whether magnetic fields can be generated and maintained, how planets cool over time, and also how the dynamics of their interiors change over time.”
NASA’s InSight mission officially ended in December 2022 after more than four years of collecting data on Mars, but the analysis of the observations continues. Samuel, Lekic and their co-authors are among the latest researchers to reexamine prior models of Mars using seismology to confirm the planet’s structure and turbulent history.
"This new discovery of a molten layer is just one example of how we continue to learn new things from the completed InSight mission,” Lekic said. “We hope that the information we’ve gathered on planetary evolution using seismic data is paving the way for future missions to celestial bodies like the moon and other planets like Venus.”
TOP IMAGE....Analysis of Martian seismic data recorded by the InSight mission in combination with first-principles simulations of the seismic properties of liquid metal alloys have revealed that Mars’s liquid iron core is surrounded by a 150-km thick molten silicate layer, as a consequence of which its core is smaller than previously proposed. The decrease in core radius implies a higher density than estimated earlier and is compatible with a metal core consisting of 9–15 wt% of light elements, chiefly S, C, O, and H. Their trajectory passes through the lower, completely molten part of the silicate layer at the base of the mantle, where seismic velocities are low.  CREDIT IPGP / CNES / N. Starter

In the alcoves of an art museum (or, a review of the Louvre, en Paris)
Tumblr media
Growing up, my family was a frequent visitor of all things art adjacent. Exhibits, museums, sculpture parks, you name it, and my artist father could sniff it out from a mile away. Vacations consisted of hours of local museums, exploring the art (and the gift shops.) But while 7 year old me was sick of staring at paintings for hours while my feet hurt, 15 year old me is able to look back and thank my dad for the effort he put in to make sure we grew up with an appreciation for arts. Museums are (ironically) my favorite places in the world now, and on a recent trip to France, I was able to experience the magnum opus of museums: the Louvre. Displaying over 35,000 artworks in one place is the dream of all artists, but it also puts plenty of things into perspective.
What they don’t tell you
The Mona Lisa is tiny. Like, one-side-of-a-medium-sized-cardboard-box tiny. And the Venus de Milo? Certainly gorgeous, but thoroughly outshined by many of the other statues in its vicinity. When visiting a museum with thousands of pieces worth more than your life savings and a half, you see the infamous works along with works you wouldn’t have ever had known existed otherwise. With all the art, the famous works are great, but I found the works that spoke to me most were tucked away from the crowds mobbing the Mona Lisa. The art that could take its time to whisper in my ear and leave me walking away as someone different. I find that the art that impacts you the most is different for everyone, and it can be something popular, but it can also be the painting at the end of the corridor that not many people see, but you do, and when that painting whispers, you listen.
Shapes and sizes, colors and mediums
I believe the sentence “art comes in many different forms” has been slapped over every inspirational sunset in every font imaginable. And for as many fonts it’s been written in, people still don’t seem to understand it’s meaning. The paintings in the Louvre are art, as are the sculptures. But some folks think it stops there. That the architecture, description placards, museums maps, and the people are not art in themselves as well. Every inch of the Louvre is art if you care to see it, not just the paintings behind the security ropes.
Gift shops and exit signs
As we enter the closing statements of this brief review, just like with art, we have to reflect. For me, the Louvre was the highlight of everything my 7 year old self could have ever wished for. Floor to ceiling paintings, intricate details, elaborate sculptures, vibrant colors, and unexpected beauties. Art is a funky thing, but I hope to leave you with  a better appreciation for what is art and what speaks to you, wherever you are. From the Louvre to the painting in your dentist’s office, art can be found everywhere you’re looking.
notes: I wrote this 2 years ago, after a visit to the museum itself! it combines my passion for art and my writing for school assignments !

Findlay Market utilizes many of Whyte’s criteria of human scale including sitting spaces. Whyte advocates for the use of moveable chairs. Findlay Market has an outdoor area with moveable chairs and tables. This is great for people to gather and socialize in groups. People can use this area for eating, playing games, or just to hang out. Using moveable chairs provides flexibility for seating because people can choose where they want to sit. This could especially be nice on sunny days so people can decide whether they want to sit out in the sun or under shade. Findlay Market as a whole, and especially this seating area, is very welcoming and encourages people to spend time there, socialize, and try local foods.

Findlay Market also provides good examples of Whyte’s idea of triangulation. The theory is that by creating a positive stimulating environment, human interaction will be encouraged. Findlay Market’s most prominent example is the central bell tower. This structure sits in the center of Findlay Market and has a dominating presence over the area. This centerpiece is aesthetically pleasing and could lead to conversations regarding the charm of the area.

One of Whyte’s 7 principles about a working plaza mentions that it is important for a space to have a physical and visual relation to the street. Findlay Market is a good example of this because of its easy accessibility to surrounding streets. Findlay Market is surrounded by lots of neighborhoods and Downtown Cincinnati. People have easy access to Findlay Market from these surrounding areas by using the “Connector” (Cincinnati Streetcar). The Connector is free for anyone who needs it.
Tumblr media
https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/sites/streetcar/assets/Maps/streetcar_map_2023.jpg
There are 18 different stations for the Connector throughout Cincinnati. This street car goes through a 3.6 mile loop that connects a lot of major areas within Cincinnati, including Findlay Market.
Another essential principle of the human scale is that food kiosks and vendors attract people and that compressed tables produce serendipitous encounters. The Findlay market fits this criteria extremely well as there is an abundance of food kiosks within the main building, as well as several stores, restaurants, produce stands and coffee shops immediately surrounding the main building. In addition, there are many local restaurants nearby where people can visit. All of this combined with the previously mentioned movable seating all contribute to the social aspect this principle creates.

The third principle of Whyte’s human scale is light. Findlay Market is a primarily outdoor venue; therefore there is natural light that radiates throughout the plaza each day. The bright colors and similar sizes of the buildings allow the light to reflect off of each other and allow the environment to feel more open and alive. While the sun can make a hot, summer day feel even hotter, the market has tents set up throughout the area to allow for shaded areas and to keep the sun exposure at a minimum on those days.

According to Whyte, trees and plants are an important part of creating spaces comfortable and human scale. Whyte speaks to the psychological benefit that plants, trees, and green space of all sorts have on those living in urban communities, offering a reprieve from the concrete jungle. Findlay Market places ample plants and trees around the exterior of the market and dining areas, as well as surrounding the adjacent parking lot. Findlay Markets makes a priority to provide splashes of nature in a sea of metal and concrete.
Discussion question: What is one way Findlay Market could include natural water sounds in the environment?

Chapter 2: Miraculous Creature! Apis' Secret And The Legendary Island
(episode 55)
"Hm...? What the heck is that? Hey! I see a flock of birds to starboard!"
"Alrighty! Gum-Gum... Grab!"
"Venus-chan, get down!"
"Welp, you killed Zoro."
"Hey, look."
"It's a girl!"
"Ugh!"
"A wind is coming. A strong wind is..."
"I feel like this ship hasn't been moving at all for a while."
"The ocean's not moving either."
"Dammit... we've entered the Calm Belt!!"
-
"Calm Belt?" Usopp repeated in confusion.
"What the heck is that?" Luffy asked.
"Calm Belt!" Nami exclaimed. "It's an area of sea where nothing moves a muscle!"
"Nami grew her muscles?" Luffy misheard.
"Idiot!" She yelled.
Just then, they all felt a strange rumble. "What was that?" Luffy wondered aloud. "An earthquake?"
"Earthquake? On the sea?" Zoro pointed out.
"You guys, enough chit chat!" Nami commanded. "Fold the sails, and start paddling now! Put the ship back on its earlier path!"
"Okay, Nami-san!" Sanji gushed.
"What're you panicking about?" Zoro asked.
"Paddling? This is a sailboat, y'know," Venus added.
"She's right," Usopp agreed, "Why're we taking the trouble to go back to where the Marines are waiting for us?"
"Just do what I say!" Nami ordered. "We're in big trouble!"
"Well, the sea is quiet," Luffy reminded.
"Yeah," Usopp nodded.
"All right, fine!" Nami raged. "Then I'll explain it to you! Listen up! Since we rushed and ran away, we came further south than we planned!"
There was a brief pause. "Then did we enter the Grand Line?" Luffy asked.
"All right!" Usopp cheered without waiting for an answer.
"If it was that easy, anyone could enter!" Nami interrupted, then unfolded a map. "Look. The Grand Line is running between two sea areas! Do you get it?" It showed the Grand Line was, indeed, between a pair of Calm Belts. "The area on both sides of it are called the Calm Belt." Luffy hummed in indication that he was listening. "The reason is unknown, but in these areas, there's no wind and no current. They're an area of sea with complete calm. Sailboats run by catching winds, so it's an extremely dangerous area, indeed a fatal area, for all of them! Luffy, did you get it?"
"Yeah. At least that we're in trouble."
"I see. Good, you got more than I thought."
Venus looked at the map in pondering. "If there's two of them, shouldn't it be Calm Belts? As in plural?"
"What's that got to do with anything?!" Nami shouted.
"So this is what the geezer meant when he said it was dangerous," Sanji remarked.
"No wonder there hasn't been any wind," Zoro added.
"We can't do anything if the ship doesn't move," Usopp pointed out.
"We can just wait until the wind starts blowing," Luffy said.
"Like I said, once you're in this area, wind never blows no matter how long you wait!" Nami reminded. "And that's not all!"
"Can't Venus-chan use her winds to bring us back?" Sanji suggested.
"No, the moon's in the last quarter," She shook her head, "Anything I do won't be strong enough. And I don't know any wind spells; just energy balls."
"Guys!" Nami snapped. "There's another reason that people call this area dangerous! In this area..."
Before she could finish, there was another tremor, only much stronger. "Ah! Another one!" Everyone yelped.
"What's going on?" Usopp noticed the witch looking over the railing, holding on with a tight grip. "Venus!"
"Something is coming this way," Apis said.
"There's some shadows out there," Venus gestured to the sea.
Just then, what appeared to be mountains began descending. "Here they are!!" Nami screamed.
"Huh...?" Luffy looked out at the sea. "What's that?" The mountains revealed to be giant sea creatures, almost the size of whole islands, the ship on one's head. "They're huge!!" Everyone gawked in horror.
"The Calm Belt is the nest of the Sea Kings," Nami finished fearfully, "Moreover, the ones here are super huge! They're another reason why people can't cross the Calm Belt."
"What're we gonna do now?" Sanji asked.
"F-for the time being, no one move," Zoro ordered, "They'll probably go back to the sea eventually. Then we'll paddle hard using our oars."
"Are you serious?!" Usopp exclaimed from his place on the sail post, gripping on for dear life.
"Shh!" A pair of small, pale hands clasped over his mouth.
Unfortunately, it caught the frog-like Sea King's attention. "Sorry."
It made a leap for the ship. "A frog is coming!!" Luffy screamed.
The ship began tilting towards its giant mouth. "What?! What?! What?!" Usopp rambled in fear.
Luffy was on alert when Apis started falling in. "Oh no!" He managed to grab, and pull her back up before the frog closed its mouth, and hopped back into the ocean.
Apis opened her eyes again, after they were closed in fear, and was shocked to see his arm stretched beyond normality. He then carried her upward, back to safety. "Y-your arm is stretching! Luffy! Do you have the power of a Devil Fruit?!"
"Yeah, that's right."
As she flew, Apis saw the Sea King's nostrils, and had an idea. "Luffy! Stretch your arm downwards again!" Although confused, he did as told.
"Hey, Luffy!" Usopp called.
"What're you doing?!" Nami yelled.
"I don't know."
"You don't know?!" Venus raged.
"Apis!" Nami addressed the little girl in concern.
"Watch out!!"
"On, two...!" Apis swung into the creature's nostril, then was flown back up.
"What did she just do?!" Zoro exclaimed.
"She pulled his nose hair," Luffy replied.
The creature's watering eyes began to squint. "Hold on a sec...!" Usopp whimpered.
"If you do that..."
"He's gonna sneeze!" Sanji frantically finished Nami's sentence.
"Ahh..." Luffy watched Apis land on the deck, a large clump of hair in her hands, before she dropped it when she crashed into Zoro. "That's a huge nose hair!"
She gave a thumbs-up from a disoriented Zoro's lap, as Venus grimaced in disgust. "Yeah, don't need to keep that." She kicked it off the deck cautiously.
"All right! We're going back!" Luffy cheered.
On cue, the creature finally let out a huge sneeze, and sent the ship and crew rocketing off. "Do it some other way!!" Everyone yelled at once, before they were sent soaring.
"Amazing! I feel like we're flying!" Luffy beamed with excitement.
"Idiot!!" Usopp's eyes were wide with terror. "We are flying!!"
With a huge splash, they were back on track, albeit shaken up. "Looks like we're back in the area we came from," Nami observed.
"I don't see any signs of the Marines either," Zoro added.
Usopp stayed low to the floor, still petrified. "Ahhh... I thought I was a goner."
"I had always said... I wanted to fly," Venus panted close by, "Just not... like that."
"Good job!" Luffy praised Apis.
"Yep!"
"Okay! Unfurl the sails!" He commanded. "Our destination is... of course! Warship Island!!"
Later, a dense fog formed all around them. "We can't see a foot in front of Merry's nose," Venus pointed out.
"Well, we can see the fog," Luffy said.
"That doesn't help us," The witch gave him the side eye.
"Apis, is it really around here?" Sanji asked.
"Not sure."
""Not sure?" You..." Usopp griped.
"It should be close by," The navigator deduced.
"That's our Nami-san!" Sanji swooned.
"You sure know your stuff," Luffy commented.
"Ah...! Look!" Apis pointed out to the ocean.
"Huh?" Everyone looked in that direction; it appeared to be a large boat up ahead. "Oh! It's a sailboat! It's huge!"
"Now listen here..." Sanij grumbled.
"The word "huge" doesn't begin to describe it," Zoro remarked.
"Then, a super humongous sailboat?"
"No!" Nami exclaimed.
"That's Warship Island," Apis grinned, "It's shaped like a warship, so it's called Warship Island."
"Ohh, right," Venus nodded.
"I see! Interesting!" Luffy looked from the prow.
As they descended to the harbor, they were spotted by one of the island locals. "Ah! That flag is... pirates!" He began a sprint through the village, frantic. "Pirates!! Pirates have come!!"
"Pirates?" A young boy's eyes widened.
"Stay inside!" His mother closed the window they were peeking out of.
A group of soldiers gathered around the harbor, spears ready, as the Going Merry anchored, and a rope ladder was thrown down.
Up on the ship, Apis showed herself. "Hi! I'm home!"
"Apis...!" They widened their eyes in shock, as she stepped down the ladder, and on the ground. "Why are you coming out from the pirate ship?" The crew climbed down next. "What's going on?"
"Say, you guys..." The soldiers waited nervously at Luffy's pause.
"Wh-what?!"
"Is there a BBQ restaurant on this island?!"
"Huh?" They stare in confusion. "Wh-what's this guy?"
"Listen!" Apis announced. "They're pirates, but they're good ones."
"Are they really good pirates?"
"Yes!"
"Weren't you taken away by the Marines in the first place?"
"That's right. But I escaped. And these guys, Luffy and the others, saved me. Right?"
"Yeah," The captain confirmed.
"What'd you do, Apis? We don't know why, but the Marines were looking for you. You should stay away from your home. They're still around."
"What am I gonna do?" She asked fearfully.
"We'd like to help, but... they're pirates, right?"
"Ahh, what should we do?" Apis asked nervously.
"Like she said, we're good pirates," Usopp said.
"Apis!" The soldiers dispersed, revealing a grey-haired old man with a cane, and a hunch. "Come to my house!"
"Who's that?" Nami wondered aloud.
"Don't know," Luffy replied.
Apis ran to him with joy and excitement. "Grandpa Bokuden!"
She gave him a big hug. "I'm glad you're safe." He then turned to the Straw Hats. "Thank you for saving Apis. How about this? I'd like to throw a small welcome party for you."
"Is your place a BBQ restaurant?" Luffy asked.
"It's not a BBQ restaurant, but Grandpa Bokuden's pork buns are the best on the island!"
"All right!" Luffy cheered. "Let's go!"
"Well then, we'll go," Zoro decided.
"I can go for some food," Venus added.
-
Meanwhile, a Marine ship was in the sea nearby, with one officer looking out from the crow's nest. "Hm?!" He saw the Going Merry docked at the island; he looked closer, and saw Apis with the crew. "There she is!"
Inside the ship, a morbidly obese man with red circles on his chipmunk-like cheeks sat on a throne, messily eating a huge chicken leg. "Eric!" The swirl-haired mercenary approached him. "I've been here all along. I thought that that girl got lost in the Calm Belt, and wasn't going to come back alive!"
Eric was shocked at that. "Can't be... that girl...?"
"She's...!" The man ate another bite, but started choking, and coughed out crumbs all over Eric's face. He wiped them off in disgust. "...back on Warship Island! Capture that girl, you bum!"
"Then they escaped from the Calm Belt...!"
-
In the house, Bokuden placed a pan of pork buns on the stove, and closed the lid. "There, the preparations are finished. Wait a little while."
"Cool!" Luffy beamed.
"Whoa! Smells good!" Usopp agreed.
"I see... this is the real deal," Sanji remarked, "Old man, how long do we have to wait?"
"Hm? Well... maybe about 4-5 hours."
"What?!" Luffy and Usopp exclaimed simultaneously.
"Ah, I'm starving," The captain leaned by a window.
"Bokuden-san, why are the Marines after Apis?" Nami asked. "Do you have any idea?"
"Apis!" Bokuden addressed his granddaughter. "Do you have any idea?"
"Not at all!"
"Well that's helpful," Venus mumbled.
"You said there was a reason, but you didn't want to tell," Nami reminded.
"Oh, that! I lied."
"What?" Usopp's eyebrows raised in surprise.
"Then none at all," Bokuden said.
"None at all?!"
"Really, there's nothing on this island. Nothing but an old legend."
"Legend?" Zoro questioned.
"The residents of this island are said to be descendants of Lost Island people who prospered but sank into the sea tens of thousands of years ago." Luffy noticed Apis' look of irritation. "On Lost Island, there lived dragons called Millennial Dragons. The bones of these dragons are called Dragonite," Bokuden stood, and walked over to prepare a light, "And it's said to be an elixir of immortality."
"I see," Sanji remarked, "But a legend like that is no reason for the Marines to get involved."
"Yeah," Usopp agreed, "Why are the Marines doing this in the first place?"
"That's the thing I don't get," Nami chimed in.
"Doesn't this legend hold some sort of clue or something?" Zoro guessed.
Bokuden returned to his seat in front of the crew, who all sat cross-legged on the floor. "To begin with, the first king of Lost Island was Iscardunk."
"Here we go again," Apis whispered to herself.
"Now, King Pokeportes had three children. The oldest son was BokeHontas, the second son was Bokebonboko, and the third son was BokeBokePon." Luffy noticed Apis sneaking away, but she shushed him, and left the house. "One day, the king said to these three, "Listen. Go find the tree that grows stars, which is said to be in Dragon's Valley." Apis sneaked around the wraparound porch, ducking under the window, and "So Bokehontas, BokeBonboko, and BokeBokepon journeyed out, one to the sea, one to the mountain, and one to the forest."
"Once Grandpa starts that story, it'll take forever. I'm not gonna listen to all that." She then left undetected.
Mostly, at least.
-
In the evening, hours later, Bokuden's story was still being told. The Straw Hats were getting quite bored. "Now, the 317th King IngriMongri III's son, IngriGrimori was quite a wise ruler.
"Hey, how long is this gonna go on?" Nami whispered to Usopp, who had his cheeks slumped on his palms.
"Who knows." He blushed when the young witch laid her head on his left shoulder, on the verge of slumber.
Zoro was also asleep, leaning against the wall. "He had 18 children. His 18 children..." Luffy was out as well, with his head rested on one hand. "He was a king who carried out major reforms."
Usopp's stomach growled with hunger. "Ahhh, I'm starving..." He leaned into Venus more, though she didn't move.
"This King Ikemenes had so many children."
"We won't be able to eat until this story is over, will we?" Nami complained.
"He had many princes. 65 of them!"
"We won't be able to eat the pork buns until then?" Usopp added.
"Pork buns?" Luffy's eyes peeked open at that, and walked like a zombie.
"Luffy?" Nami noticed him.
"I hear it was like, "If you throw a stone, it'll hit one of the princes.""
"I gotta take a leak." Luffy trudged to a shed outside, and a delicious smell wafting from the inside made him grin. "Pork buns..."
In the shed, Apis was stashing some buns in a large sack. "Hold on, Grandpa Ryu." She heard footsteps, and panicked at Luffy coming closer. "Oh no!" She worked faster, and he kept coming. "He's coming this way! What am I gonna do?" She leaned against the wall in hiding, as he stood at the doorway. "Please! Don't come here!"
He sniffed the air, and smiled. "Pork buns smell yummy."
Apis prepared to strike him with a frying pan when he walked inside, but to her surprise, he fell over, and was out again. "No way! I didn't hit him yet, right?"
"Ahhh, pork buns," He mumbled. She looked him over, smiled at his staying asleep, and continued her work.
Back in the house, the story was still going on, to everyone's chagrin. "And the 111th... no, the 1,121st king was HokeHontas. So, NemeNememitas thought about what he could do to protect his kingdom."
A sleepy, famished Usopp noticed Nami crawling away. "Hey, where're you going?" He peered around Venus' head.
"I'm worried about Luffy, since he's been gone for a long time. So, I'll go check." She winked, and made her leave.
"Then, he made preparation before large countries attacked them."
"That's not fair," Usopp whined.
"Nami-san's lovely even when she sneaks out," Sanji gushed.
"Phew!" She sighed in relief when outside. "Good grief!" She heard snoring from the shed, and saw Luffy asleep on the ground, pork bun on his cheek. "Luffy!" She shook him awake by his shoulder, and the bun fell into his open mouth. "Ahhh! Not even one bun is left!" She fussed at the empty pan.
Luffy sat up, eating the one from his face. "Yeah, this is yummy."
Nami punched him in the head. "Yummy?! How do you intend to make up for eating everyone's share?!" She yelled.
He rubbed his head over his hat. "What're you talking about?" He asked cluelessly. All he ate was the one.
"Geez... hm?" Nami noticed a trail on the ground, as if something was dragged behind someone's back. "What's this?" The trail went outside, and to the left. "What made this trail?"
The two followed the path, up to a mountainside, surrounded by trees. "Hm? A dead end?"
"What's the deal?" Nami wondered aloud.
"Hm?" In the brush, Luffy noticed an opening, and kneeled down for a closer look, sticking his head fully in.
"Hey Luffy, what're you doing?"
"A hole."
"What?" She peered in, and saw he was right; the trail went through a hole in the rocks. Now curious, they crawled through; on the other side, they saw a large sack sliding up a pathway.
Up higher, Apis grabbed a rope, and swung herself to the other side of a gorge, along with the sack.
A little later, Luffy and Nami stopped at the same gorge. "Looks like they went across here," Nami deduced. "Luffy!"
"Yep! Gum-Gum...! Suspension bridge." He stretched long enough to make himself a bridge, and Nami scooted her away across cautiously.
Apis dragged the sack into a large cave, unaware of her followers. "Grandpa Ryu!"
"This is the other side of the mountain," Nami said.
"How far did they go?" Luffy pondered.
It was then when they found the cave. "Ah, that's..." Nami led Luffy inside.
"Yes, I was fine. These weird pirates saved me," Apis talked to someone, "No, they're not that scary. You must be hungry. I brought Grandpa Bokuden's pork buns. Here you go. No! Slow down!" She was oblivious to the footsteps coming closer. "Oh, I'm sorry. I still don't know yet. Although I'm searching very hard, I still haven't found a clue yet."
"I wonder who on Earth Apis is talking to."
"Hey, Apis!" Luffy called out. "Who're you talking to?"
"Don't just jump out, and say "hey"!" Nami scolded.
When he walked closer, Apis protectively stood in front of something huge and feathery. "No! Don't come here!"
Luffy kept coming, the creature watching silently, and leaned closer in shock. "Whoa!!"
"Luffy, what's the matter?" Nami asked, walking in, before she stopped. "Ahh!!" Her brown eyes widened.
It was a dragon! He had teal blue feathers, gold eyes, and a bald head, and was almost the size of the Going Merry.
"Amazing!" Luffy gushed, scaling every part of his body. "Amazing! Amazing!"
"Stop it!" Apis protested. "I said stop it!"
"Hey, Luffy..." Nami muttered in shock.
He snuggled the dragon's snout, while Apis tried to pull him away. "This is the real thing! Is he alive?"
"Stop it! Leave him alone!"
'I can't believe... that it really exists,' Nami thought, 'I thought that dragons were just legends!'
"This is incredible!" Luffy gushed. "Where did you come from?" The dragon stared silently for what felt like an eternity. "I see... you want to go home, huh?"
Apis gasped in shock, then slumped in relief. "Okay... Grandpa Ryu says that you can be his friend, Luffy. He says he can tell you're a good person." Nami watched in awe, as he gave an assuring grin. "Luffy, how could you read Grandpa Ryu's mind?"
"I somehow did."
"Somehow...?"
"How did you know?"
"Oh, well, I..."
Nami then figured it out, and spoke up. "Could it be... a Devil Fruit?" Apis turned to her. "You have the power of a devil fruit, don't you?"
She nodded. "Yes. I ate one called Whisper-Whisper Fruit or something. Since then, I've become able to read animals' minds."
"That's why you knew a wind was coming that time."
Apis nodded again. "Yep. The seabirds told me that. I met Grandpa Ryu thanks to the Whisper-Whisper Fruit too." She recalled hearing his sad voice when in a flower field, and running to follow it. "He had lost his energy. He said that he got separated from his friends, and that since then, he had been looking for Lost Island, where the dragons' nest is."
"Didn't Lost Island sink a long, long time ago?" Nami asked.
"Grandp Ryu says that the island will surface again. He says it's about time, but he no longer clearly remembers where it is. He's gotten very old, and lost the energy to fly. But he keeps telling me that he wants to go back. I wanna help, but I can't figure out where such an island exists at all. The legend by itself doesn't really give me a clue. So I asked the Marines, who happened to stop by this island, about it. That was a mistake. They were looking for the Dragonite."
"Dragonite... you mean the one for immortality?" Nami clarified. "They took you away because of such a thing?"
"Yes. They told me to tell them everything I knew, and took me away. The pendant that I made with a claw Grandpa Ryu gave me may have been another reason, though..."
"That's why you escaped in that storm," Nami recalled, "You are too reckless!"
"I know," Apis nodded, "That's why I keep this a secret from the villagers, and even Grandpa Bokuden-san. I don't want to cause trouble for them. But I want to take Grandpa Ryu back to his home, no matter what it takes. He always tells me that he'll get his energy back for sure, once he goes back to the dragons' nest. I'll find it for him, no matter how many years it takes. For sure... no matter what it takes, I'll find it for him."
After a pause, Luffy made an announcement. "Okay then! I'll take him there!"
Apis turned to him in surprise. "Luffy! Were you listening?! Lost Island sank into the sea!" Nami pointed out.
"But since the legendary Millennial Dragon exists, I'm sure Lost Island also exists somewhere!"
"An island that's not even on a map?"
"Yeah, that's why we're going!"
Nami laid her hand on her forehead. "An island that's not even on a map, huh? Oh, what the heck." She snapped her fingers. "Let's go!"
"All right!" Luffy cheered.
"Really?! Really?!"
"Yeah."
"Thank you!"
"Now that's been decided, eat more!" He leaned into Ryu's face.
"Oh, Luffy, I forgot to tell you..." Before Apis could finish, the dragon bit down on his head. "Grandpa Ryu is a little senile," She finished, as Nami gawked in horror.
-
The next day, some Marine ships began closing in on the island. "That girl had a pendant with a Millennial Dragon's claw," Eric recalled, "She must know about Lost Island. That darn girl who knows the secret of the Dragonite... I'll definitely capture her this time!"

This was a fun, friendly annual expo for the Los Angeles area that focuses on cosplay and art vendors. It benefits from its location in Little Tokyo for additional food and shopping options that helped make the event effortlessly feel bigger than it actually was. Great for families and first-time con-goers.
Location: Terasaki Budokan (Little Tokyo), 249 S Los Angeles St. | Los Angeles, CA 90012
Date: 21 October 2023

Size and Scale + Food Alley
This was a small convention that was manageable in size and had a good amount of potential activities for attendees. One could not attend every single thing happening, but one could window shop (or actually shop) at a leisurely pace through the Seller's Hall twice and still have time to get food, chase after cosplayers for photos, attend a panel or two, or even leave the expo entirely for an hour or two and return later.
The venue, Terasaki Budokan, was small enough to navigate fairly easily with the help of a printed map and event schedule. Admission wristbands allowed attendees the freedom to enter and leave the venue as they pleased. This made it easy to go outside to the food trucks or elsewhere in walking distance around Little Tokyo. Also, it is a relatively new building, with clean bathrooms significantly contributing to my positive impression (other than a poorly installed door lock on the disabled stall in the Women's bathroom).
I and other attendees ventured over to Kinokuniya Los Angeles two blocks away at some point in the afternoon to kill time between events and/or to shop around Weller Court when the art vendor options had been thoroughly explored.
There were two food trucks for the event. Both parked on Los Angeles Street, the street outside the main entrance. The first was Okamoto Kitchen and the other was Fluff Ice.
Health and Safety Policy
https://www.ronin-expo.org/general-info
For ADA concerns, the whole Expo took place on the ground floor of the venue, with no stairs impeding the use of wheelchairs or walkers. The doorways to all sections of the venue were kept propped open, with the exception of the Panel Room, which one could easily knock on and be let in by the event staff or panelists.
Security was effective in that there was only one entrance (a metal gate opening onto the sidewalk), and there were between five and ten event staff at tables on either side of the entrance to greet people. They checked for event wristbands for those attempting to reenter the venue. There was a second exit in the Courtyard that one could use without issue. Custodians and other venue-affiliated staff were also visible throughout the day, keeping the spaces clean and orderly.
Regarding masks: in Southern California, COVID is still around, but people have generally moved on and ditched their masks since summer or even before that. Every now and then, I hear of someone I know who got COVID and thus disappears from public activities for up to two weeks, but there is little fuss made about it. Anyone can wear a mask in any given context if they so choose, and it is particularly encouraged to wear a mask if one is sick with some kind of respiratory illness. However, the majority of people do not wear a mask in public anymore, whether indoors or out. This was the same at Ronin Expo: a handful of people wore masks, but most people didn't. Nobody seemed to be getting ragged on for wearing a mask or for not wearing a mask. Everyone was free to have fun in the way they felt was best for themselves.
Seller's Hall
Artists were mostly in the Seller's Hall, with a handful of vendors outdoors on either side of the entrance area after coming through the main gates. Part of the gymnasium used for the Seller's Hall was specifically used as the Gamer Zone.
Vendors were all happy to chat, compliment us on our outfits, answer questions about their merch, or even give out freebies in the spirit of the event. (I never thought I'd see the day when I would just be handed a Pokémon trading card pack for free, but these guys were seriously that generous.) I saw very few Sold Out signs even by late evening, so inventory seemed sufficient.
Outside of the free stuff, there were a lot of cool items being sold, too. One that I thought was really interesting was an amigurumi Dobby (from Harry Potter). I have never seen one before and I may never see one again!
Cosplay Areas
The Courtyard was an admittedly cramped outdoor area with some greenery (some low-lying plants and a small tree) used as a cosplay photo zone, and it connected the singular Panel Room to the rest of the areas. I had some difficulty navigating around the other people milling about in this area without bumping into them, particularly with elaborately dressed cosplayers whose outfits could be destroyed by an accidental run-in with someone else. If empty, however, the Courtyard would have been a visual treat and a peaceful getaway spot to take in a bit of nature. I would recommend not lingering in this area for too long due to the crowding.
Entertainment - Attendee Experience
The Plaza Stage was outdoors with plenty of seating thanks to an added set of bleachers in addition to the concrete benches flanking the stage, built into the building exterior. Some notable stage events included panel discussions with English voice actors for Jujutsu Kaisen, BLEACH, and Dragon Ball Z. I enjoyed eating my lunch from the Okamoto Kitchen food truck while listening to the actors discuss details about the English VA subset of the entertainment industry.
I also attended two panels, both held in the Panel Room. They are:
Intro to Visual Kei and Fan Talk | 2:45-3:45 PM
I definitely feel as if I got schooled while attending this panel, as I had only a vague idea of what Visual Kei is before hearing the panelists' take on it. For those that do not know, Visual Kei is a music scene and movement that originated in Japan during the late 1980s, influenced by glam rock and other 1980s rock music styles. The panelists shared some supremely entertaining photos and music videos of the most prominent Visual Kei artists, from their origins in the late 1970s to the present day, and their knowledge and passion shone through despite serious logistical issues with their presentation.
Something of note to me was that the panelists were rather harsh when mentioning YOSHIKI (from X Japan fame). They said that he claims to "take credit for everything" by stating that X Japan started Visual Kei in the early 1980s. According to the panelists, it was actually X Japan's slightly older contemporary 44MAGNUM that first started the trend.
I appreciated what I learned from the panel, but given that I was fresh off the YOSHIKI Classical 10th Anniversary World Tour concert in Los Angeles the night before, I am admittedly a YOSHIKI fan who did not take too kindly to the panelists' opinions. Whether or not 44MAGNUM were the true founders of the Visual Kei fashion era, I believe that X Japan was still the band that contributed the most to popularizing it due to their own all-eclipsing popularity (in Japan and even internationally to an extent). Perhaps 44MAGNUM walked so X Japan could run. But I am willing to excuse YOSHIKI's allegedly exaggerated self-importance because I feel as if he deserves at least a little bragging rights. At the end of the day, his accomplishments as a musician, composer, producer, etc. have brought pride to Japan on the international stage. No other Japanese artist or group can quite compare as of yet.
Unfortunately, the panelists encountered difficulties while attempting to display their PowerPoint presentation on the projector, which proved to be unresolved. As a result, we were directed to view their content directly from a laptop screen. These issues stemmed from Mac/PC incompatibility between the panelists' laptops and the venue's equipment. Although it was difficult to view and appreciate their content on such a small screen, the panelists managed to compensate for this inconvenience through their enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the subject matter. I especially enjoyed how their Visual Kei cosplay outfits and Sanrio Kuromi plushies on display helped enhance the atmosphere and felt like it completed the vibe. Given how well the presentation ended up at the end, I feel like it was unfortunate that a few audience members decided to depart during the early stages of the presentation, likely due to the ongoing efforts to resolve the technology-related setbacks.
A Hideo Kojima Fan Panel | 6:30-7:30 PM
This panel was also hosted at Anime Expo 2023, but I wasn't able to attend it at the time. The panelists claimed to be practiced with it because this was their third time presenting the material, and it definitely showed. The panel was engaging and funny, and the panelists connected well with the audience. (I'd like to award extra points for the quiz with prizes at the end, too!)
Neither of the panels I went to hit maximum attendance, but this one was particularly minimal. While I have never personally played any Metal Gear games, I remembered casually watching my brothers play them while we were growing up and being struck by how much they got into a seemingly simple game. I ended up being very much a Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG) person throughout the PS1 and PS2 eras. I did feel a little strained to understand aspects of the presentation because I lack the foundational experience of Kojima's most famous projects, but I appreciated the insight into Kojima's creative process and his unique style that he has built into the many games he was involved in over the years. For example, imagine playing a game in which pausing the game even once results in getting the "bad ending" where the damsel in distress dies! Apparently, that's Kojima. To learn more about this fascinating creative mind, the panelists recommended picking up Hideo Kojima's autobiography The Creative Gene (perhaps from a Kinokuniya near you).

Readying spacecraft to surf Venus' atmosphere ESA's EnVision mission to Venus will perform optical, spectral and radar mapping of Earth's sister planet. But before getting down to work the van-sized spacecraft needs to "aerobrake"—lowering its orbit with thousands of passages through the planet's hot, thick atmosphere for up to two years. A unique ESA facility is currently testing candidate spacecraft materials to check they can safely withstand this challenging process of atmospheric surfing. "EnVision as currently conceived cannot take place without this lengthy phase of aerobraking," explains ESA's EnVision study manager Thomas Voirin. "The spacecraft will be injected into Venus orbit at a very high altitude, at approximately 250,000 km, then we need to get down to a 500 km altitude polar orbit for science operations. Flying on an Ariane 62, we cannot afford all the extra propellant it would take to lower our orbit. Instead we will slow ourselves down through repeated passes through the upper atmosphere of Venus, coming as low as 130 km from the surface." EnVision's predecessor spacecraft, Venus Express, performed experimental aerobraking during the final months of its mission in 2014, gathering valuable data on the technique. Aerobraking was used operationally for the first time in 2017 by ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) to lower its orbit around the Red Planet over an 11 month period. Thomas notes: "Aerobraking around Venus is going to be much more challenging than for TGO. To begin with, the gravity of Venus is about 10 times higher than that of Mars. This means velocities about twice as high as for TGO will be experienced by the spacecraft when passing through the atmosphere—and heat is generated as a cube of velocity. Accordingly, EnVision has to target a lower aerobraking regime, resulting in an aerobraking phase twice as long. "On top of that, we are also going to be much closer to the Sun, experiencing around double the solar intensity of Earth's, with the thick white clouds of the atmosphere reflecting a lot of sunlight straight back to space, which additionally needs to be taken into account. Then on top of all that, we realized we had to reckon with another factor over the thousands of orbits we envisage, previously only experienced in low Earth orbit: highly-erosive atomic oxygen." This is a phenomenon that remained unknown during the first decades of the space age. It was only when early Space Shuttle flights returned from low orbit in the early 1980s that engineers received a shock: the spacecraft's thermal blankets had been severely eroded. The culprit turned out to be highly reactive atomic oxygen—individual atoms of oxygen at the fringes of the atmosphere, the result of standard oxygen molecules of the kind found just above the ground being broken apart by powerful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. Today, all missions below about 1,000 km need to be designed to resist atomic oxygen, such as Europe's Earth-watching Copernnicus Sentinels or any hardware built for the International Space Station. Spectral observations by past Venus orbiters of airglow above the planet confirm that atomic oxygen is widespread at the top of the Venusian atmosphere too, which is more than 90 times thicker than Earth's surrounding air. Thomas says: "The concentration is quite high, with one pass it doesn't matter so much but over thousands of times it starts to accumulate and ends up with a level of atomic oxygen fluence we have to take account of, equivalent to what we experience in low-Earth orbit, but at higher temperatures." The EnVision team turned to a unique European facility specifically built by ESA to simulate atomic oxygen in orbit. The Low Earth Orbit Facility, LEOX, is part of the Agency's Materials and Electrical Components Laboratory, based at ESA's ESTEC technical center in the Netherlands. ESA materials engineer Adrian Tighe explains: "LEOX generates atomic oxygen at energy levels that are equivalent to orbital speed. Purified molecular oxygen is injected into a vacuum chamber with a pulsing laser beam focused onto it. This converts the oxygen into a hot plasma whose rapid expansion is channeled along a conical nozzle. It then dissociates to form a highly energetic beam of atomic oxygen. "To work reliably, the laser timing must stay precise to millisecond scale, and directed to an accuracy measured in thousandths of a millimeter, throughout the four-month duration of this current test campaign. "This isn't the first time that the facility has been used to simulate an extraterrestrial orbital environment—we have previously performed atomic oxygen testing on candidate solar array materials for ESA's Juice mission, because telescopic observations suggest atomic oxygen will be found in the atmospheres of Europa and Ganymede. However, for EnVision the heightened temperature during aerobraking poses an additional challenge, so the facility has been adapted to simulate this more extreme Venusian environment." A range of materials and coatings from different parts of the EnVision spacecraft, including multi-layer insulation, antenna parts and star tracker elements are placed within a plate to be exposed to the purple-glowing LEOX beam. At the same time this plate is being heated to mimic the expected thermal flux, up to 350°C. EnVision candidate materials sample observed by infrared camera. Thomas adds: "We want to check that these parts are resistant to being eroded, and also maintain their optical properties—meaning they do not degrade or darken, which might have knock-on effects in terms of their thermal behavior, because we have delicate scientific instruments that must maintain a set temperature. We also need to avoid flaking or outgassing, which lead to contamination." This current test campaign is part of a larger panel looking into EnVision aerobraking, including the use of a Venus climate database developed from previous mission results to estimate the local variability of the planet's atmosphere to set safe margins for the spacecraft. The results of this test campaign are expected at the end of this year.
