Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Catra & Entrapta & Scorpia (She-Ra), Adora/Catra (She-Ra) Characters: Catra (She-Ra), Scorpia (She-Ra), Entrapta (She-Ra), Adora (She-Ra), Glimmer (She-Ra), Bow (She-Ra), Hordak (She-Ra) Additional Tags: Humor, cosmic horror, Weirdness, Eldritch, The Horrors Summary:
Cosmic horrors, minor inconveniences, paperwork, treason, a sense of failure; Catra will tackle all these obstacles in her life the only way she knows: by taking bad decisions and using an exagerated amount of violence.
This story has been sitting in my document folder for months. I’ve been wanting to write horror/comedy stuff (in the style of Night Vale or Gravity Falls) but I still need a lot of practice. Figured that if I was going to publish this I might as well do it today.

Last Night
A Glimmadora Fanfiction
It was midnight. Glimmer was not sure how she knew that it was, considering how most of Etheria's lights had been snuffed out for a while now. But she knew it was midnight. And she couldn't sleep.
From where she lay, Glimmer could see the faint glow of the Failsafe on Adora's chest. A mark of approaching end. Based on how still Adora was, Glimmer reckoned she was probably awake too. She whispered to Adora, careful not to wake the others.
“Adora?”
There was a pause. Then Adora's voice reached her. “Yes?”
In that one syllable, Glimmer could pick apart at least three emotions. Uncertainty, fear, sorrow. Adora was already mourning herself. Her inevitable death.
Glimmer quietly got up from her sleeping bag and walked across to Adora's, sitting next to her.
“Why are you still awake?”
Glimmer could now see Adora's face in the Failsafe's glow. Adora always looked somewhat tired, Glimmer had noticed it a long time ago. She acted peppy and energetic, she always tried to cheer up and inspire her friends. But there was always that look of fatigue and some faraway sorrow that you could catch when she wasn't completely aware of herself.
And now, what with dealing with Catra and the threat of world destruction looming over them, Adora looked more exhausted than ever. She shrugged in reply to Glimmer's question.
“I don't know. I just couldn't sleep.” Adora glanced at Glimmer and sat up quickly. “Are you okay?”
Oh, Adora. Even when it was her life that was on the line, she still always cared so much about everyone else. Too much, maybe.
“I'm fine, don't worry,” Glimmer reassured her quickly. “What about you? How are you feeling?”
Adora sighed. “Does it matter?”
Glimmer took Adora's hand in hers. “It does. It matters to me. And Bow. And everyone out there who loves you and wants you to return safely.”
“I just—” Adora gave a slight ironic chuckle that was somehow even more chilling than her previous depressed tone. “I don't want to get your hopes up. Whatever happens happens for a good reason. Etheria will be safe again.”
Everything was silent for a while, except for the soft chirp of the cicadas. Glimmer tried not to think about the implications of that sentence. She squeezed Adora's hand as she willed herself not to break down into tears.
It took her some restraint and a deep breath to get her next words out, even though her voice was giving up on her.
“Does it always have to be you, Adora?”
She saw a shift in Adora's expression in the Failsafe's glow. “Doesn't it? Isn't that what She-ra is for?”
“Maybe.. but what is Adora for?” Glimmer met Adora's steady gaze. “What do you want, Adora?”
“I—” Adora's voice faltered as she failed to come up with an answer. She looked away. “It doesn't matter. I have to do this.”
A sudden thought struck Glimmer as she grabbed Adora's other hand and looked at the girl earnestly.
“I'm a lot more powerful than I used to be. I- I'm in total control of my powers now. Maybe I can handle the Failsafe, I could take it to the Heart of Etheria instead!”
“No!”
Adora covered her mouth, surprised at her own ferocity. Lowering her voice, she continued. “No. You're not the one who needs to do it. You have a kingdom to rule. You have people who care about you.”
“So do you, Adora,” Glimmer's voice caught in her throat, tears pricking the corners of her eyes.
Adora smiled sadly and touched Glimmer's forehead with her own, tears trickling down her cheeks. “Don't worry about me, okay?”
Glimmer didn't reply. She pulled Adora into a tight embrace instead.
Glimmer doesn't know how long they stayed that way or when they finally dropped off to sleep in each other's arms, comforted by the thought of spending their last few hours together.

DT's backstory: Excerpt from first chapter
--I want to preface this by saying that I don't know if I'll actually end up writing this, even though I said I would. I used to love writing, but it's become harder and harder to do so, and it hasn't felt fun like it used to in awhile. I haven't been happy with anything from the first chapter except this opening scene, so I don't know when the rest will come out if it even will at all. If it never does, I apologize for making a promise I couldn't keep.
With that out of the way, please do tell me if you want me to continue it. One of the things holding me back from writing more on this blog is that I felt no one would actually enjoy it, so there would be no reason to go to the effort of writing at all.
Okay! Enough talk. Onto the scene!--
They woke with a start, gasping for breath. It was that dream again. The contents of their room came to them one at a time—the tall ceiling, the plush bed with pastel sheets, the crystals, and the waterfall customary in all Bright Moon rooms. Right, that’s where they were. Double Trouble was staying at Bright Moon so Glimmer could “keep an eye on them” and make sure they actually did the community service they’d been sentenced to for their crimes. They hadn’t complained, as they were getting a free room out of it, and a luxurious one at that.
But sometimes that big room felt lonely. Hollow. Suffocating. Too open, too vulnerable. There were no tight walls to keep them safe, just stale air and enough space for at least twenty assailants. After sleeping in any concealed nook and cranny in the Crimson Waste for so long, getting used to sleeping without one eye open proved to be a harder task than they’d anticipated. Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for that dream.
No, a nightmare is what it was. A nightmare they just couldn’t shake, lingering like a bad habit. Anytime they thought they were safe, hadn’t had it in awhile, it’d crop up again. It always started the same. They came to in a hallway filled with murals and artwork, but it twisted and warped each time they looked directly at the walls, unable to identify a single thing portrayed in them as if they’d seen it all before and couldn’t for the life of them remember it. A horrible, crackling sound piercing their ears as a green light blinded them. A scent they’d never forget—the smell of burning flesh—hit them in waves and made them gag. It encompassed them in a feeling like none they’d ever felt, of the most intense fear and sorrow their hardened heart was capable of, the first wound they’d ever felt.
Then they’d run. They had two paths. They could leave this place, leave its awful scent behind, or delve deeper to the door engulfed in flames. They never seemed to have a choice, for no matter how hard they willed themselves to run and never turn back, they’d often wind up at that door. Somehow, they knew it led to a nursery. The flames climbed the emerald door and devoured it, choking them with its filthy smoke. Against their better judgement, they’d try to force it open and receive a scorching in the process, unable to get the door to budge. They’d always known there were children trapped inside, fighting to breathe and watching in terror as the fire crept ever closer to their tender flesh. But this was the first night Double Trouble heard their screams. It rang in their ears as they’d woken up, and they coughed as if still choking on smoke before they realized where they were.
Their heart ached with loss, but for what, they didn’t know. The screaming echoed in their mind, and they shuddered. Double Trouble wasn’t the vulnerable type, not by a long shot. But, if no one was there to see it, were they really being vulnerable at all? Only one thing could put them to sleep now, and so long as it was their little secret, what was the harm in indulging?
They leaned over their bed, peering underneath it for the tell-tale glint of gold. Spying the chest, they pulled it out and shapeshifted their claw into the shape of a key. A true key didn’t exist to ensure Double Trouble was the only one who could open it.
They didn’t have many belongings. Growing up in the Crimson Waste did that to you. Anything you had could be stolen, and if you couldn’t take it with you, it wasn’t yours for long. But against all odds, they’d managed to keep the thing in the chest for the twenty-two years they’d been alive. Perhaps it was because it was so worthless to anyone else, so ugly and unassuming that no one would even want to take it. But to Double Trouble, it was their first possession, a symbol of a time they could never recall, of the brief moment they hadn’t been an orphan. Their baby blanket.
Once a tender lavender, soft and plush as a duckling’s down, now stained ruddy brown with dirt and sand, coarse with age, riddled with holes and unraveling at some of the rougher edges. They loved it all the same. Pressing their face against it, taking in the familiar smell and feeling its texture, it put their mind at ease as they started to drift off into a more peaceful sleep. They ran their fingers over the embroidered letters, done with gold thread that lacked its luster now. They traced the “D,” then the “u,” following the cursive lines to the end of the name their mother gave them. A name they dared not share with anyone else. “Duality.”

JUST THIS ONCE... (Catradora)
Rating: General Audiences
Tags: She-Ra Season 5 Spoilers, Dark, Self-Hatred, Catra POV, Angst with a happy ending.
WC: 642
Notes: Bolded parts are whispers by Adora that Catra perceives as yells.
Read on AO3
"You look out for me. And I look out for you. Nothing really bad can happen as long as we have each other."
"You promise?"
"I promise."
That was the last memory that crossed Catra's mind before the pain.
"It was time I did justice to that promise myself. Stay safe, Adora..."
And those were her last thoughts before being forced to submerge inside the green glowing pool. Before the shadows took over and all she could hear was Horde Prime's voice, soon enough joined by thousands upon thousands of voices in the darkness. The hivemind. Their sound was deafening and Horde Prime's will was even sicker than any punishment Shadow Weaver had ever inflicted upon Catra. So she withdrew deep into her soul, far deeper than anyone could ever reach, to slumber for eternity as Horde Prime used her as a mere puppet.
Anyone but Adora. Suddenly, a light. And Adora was there. Somehow she had managed to break Prime's mind control. She didn't remember doing so. But soon enough, Prime took over again. This happened many times in a lapse of time way too short and Catra was hurting.
The last thing she saw before being surrounded by darkness once again... Was the abyss. A deep, dark abyss. Horde Prime wanted to end her life.
The darkness surrounded her, once again. She could also feel the grip of Horde Prime, restraining her whole mind. And the shadows started to grow bigger. And bigger. And bigger.
She was dying. And all she could think was... That she deserved it. She had ruined way too many people's lives. She had broken people, and pushed them away. A single good action couldn't redeem a monster like her. She deserved nothing, but death. The whole universe would be better off without her.
And then, among the shadows, she heard a voice. A shout, a yell. Accompanied by a light, so bright that the shadows started to retreat. So bright, that Horde Prime's light seemed like a shadow itself. So pure that she could feel Horde Prime's grip weakening, as he was burned by the light.
"Come on, Catra, you're not done. Not yet!"
She knew that voice. She knew it as well as she knew that the sun would rise every morning. Her heart skipped way too many heartbeats.
"Adora?"
"We're going home, Catra! You have to wake up!"
Then, Catra saw it. A bright, glowing door, calling her from within the shadows, attracting her. And Adora was there. Trying to reach Catra with her hand.
"Adora... I'm worthless. I hurt people. Why would you come back for me? I wanted you to be safe... To uphold my end of the promise for once. Leave me. You're better off without me."
"No, no!"
The sheer emotion in Adora's yells was enough to made Catra look at her. She was crying.
"I was the one who failed you! I broke the promise, while you always looked out for me, even after I left! So don't you dare blame yourself for that!"
"But..."
"Don't you get it!? I know I don't deserve it, but I'm begging you! I will never leave you again, so please, just this once... Come with me!"
Adora wasn't able to continue as she burst into tears. But her words were more than enough to make Catra feel something she hadn't felt in a long time. Hope for a better future. Hope for herself. Hope... For redemption. A will to live.
So she struggled with Horde Prime's weakened wrap. She struggled through the shadows, through the pain and through the darkness, reaching for Adora's hand, as her face filled with surprise.
When she opened her eyes, Adora was there. Leaning on her chest, feeling mentally exhausted and vulnerable... She said the only thing she could think of at the moment.
"Hey, Adora..."
AO3.
Kudos and reblogs are appreciated 💛
