Letter Writing - Feeding the Flock 23
The old-fashioned hand-written letter is definitely a thing of the past. I found this in my grandmother’s old scrapbook. It is dated 1934, which makes this little piece of paper I was careful to scan about 90 years old. Based on the date, my grandmother would have been almost 20 when she wrote this letter to her sister-in-law. I am one of the few left who supports the USPS by writing the old…

A snippet from the next chapter of Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy :)
Dear Penelope’s boyfriend,
What a shame it is to hear you’ve run off with another woman, Mr Weasley. Doth thine heart not think of me? Barely a week has passed without you and already I yearn! Penelope’s a lucky girl, though I’m sorry she’s stuck with a man who folds his socks and washes his hair with coconut-scented shampoo. Such sweet sorrow.
I’ve took a bow, encore, etc. Hope that helped, Perce. You could convince Ginny it was just a bro kiss. Y’know, like mates do. Not that I’d know, but I reckon Charlie would back you up on that one. Don’t worry about souvenirs, seeing you again when you come back will be more than enough. Not to be sappy.

My darling Jess,
My love, I can never put into words how much I miss you. But today I am missing you just that little extra more. I know you love Christmas. I love the way you are so festive and bright always sharing love and care for all in this time. Now it's Christmas here and I miss you. I miss your laugh and your smile. Your kind words and soothing voice. It's cold and snowy here, a white Christmas, just how we like it. But it's not the same. We tried to share some Christmas cheer but it's hard in our position. I sit in my foxhole now writing to you, I wish I could be with you, snuggling in front of the fire, drinking hot chocolate. I would take you out into the snowy night to look at the stars that shimmer so brightly in the sky. But I know if I was there I wouldn't be able to admire the stars, since the star I love shines so brightly beside me. Jess I need this all to be over so I can kiss you again. I love you ma chérie, you complete me.
You are mine and I am yours, always.
Gene.
Firstly I need to scream about this because it’s adorable. Everyone knows how much I adore old fashioned love letters, especially from Eugene. And so because it’s Christmas I have decided to write a reply.
To my dearest Gene,
What a lot of change this year had bought. To think that last Christmas you were here in Aldbourne and now you seem so many miles away. The house is so quiet here without you. I miss sitting by the fire with you when you read, you always do all the best character voices.
I miss the way your face scrunches up when you’re trying to concentrate when we play chess and I miss the way that you always let me win.
I have hung your stocking by the fireplace waiting for you. They said this would be over by Christmas, how wrong they are. It will still be waiting for you when you return. We can celebrate Christmas in June if we have too. As long as you are with me I do not mind.
I hope you are keeping warm. I have enclosed some spare socks and gloves in the package, along with some recent photographs of home.
I hope the others are getting on okay too. I’m sure you are looking after the Gene, you always do. You have such a big heart and I’m very lucky that you gave some of your heart to me. I’ll keep it safe I promise.
I love you my dearest Eugene, forever and always
Your Jess
