i know ive reblogged that post a couple of times now about how old internet wasn't "better" in terms of the content on it (pain olympics, rotten, meatspin, etc) but there was definitely more agency in being exposed to that content. as others in the thread said, you developed a kind of 'street smarts' about the internet, knowing which roads to avoid/which links to click and where they might take you. yeah youd take some wrong turns but thats how youd learn. just like the real world has seedy back alleys, the internet did too. and most of them were 'dead ends' anyway: tubgirl and lemon party were just the isolated image. it's not like they automatically subscribed you to mailing lists or downloaded viruses or notified your neighborhood that you'd visited. they were closer to gross-out pranks than anything nefarious, if anything just making both kids and parents more mindful of what they could find online.

i learned pretty early on that not every website about pokemon was safe just because pokemon was for kids, and i learned to identify and stay away from them; it helped that many sites/webrings were clearly labeled as either containing hentai or being 'hentai-free'. i recall many 'shrine' sites having a separate 'hentai page', like the back room at a video store, with bold #FF0000 "WARNING 18+" as a splash page before the main index. nothing could stop me from clicking it of course, but i knew what to expect if i ever did. sure there were the occasional porno popup ads, but like the seedy back alleys those were indicators that i was in a 'bad part of town' and should be hightailing it out of there anyway, malicious more often to software than psyche.

neopets and beheading videos existed on the same internet, but there was zero chance of grainy footage of iraqi POWs showing up in the same window as meerca chase. with the congealing of individual sites into The Big Four glorified RSS feeds, there is no delineation between these things, no demarcation -- site as location is eliminated. this simultaneously atomizes and flattens both war crime evidence and virtual pets into "media", bits of decontextualized data, the dreaded "content", dissolved and extruded as slop into a digital trough. a literal feed. the marked difference between internet of then and now is that i had the power to both detect and avoid that kind of content because they were in physically separate locations, whereas in modern day internet everything is in the same place, so it gets directly beamed into my face.

one of the primary reasons i never migrated to twitter was because my friends would follow porn on their main accounts, which would not affect me at all except that twitter would go "hey! look at this post your mutuals liked!" and it would be porn. like sure i can go to the public square's market for my groceries since it's popular and convenient but there's also people being drawn and quartered there sometimes (something something foucault discipline and punish surveillance state etc). the algorithm forces content on you against your will and the only way to curtail that is to feed the algorithm your information, placating a wild beast holding you hostage, hoping the panopticon will avert its gaze a moment, versus the old internet of being able to go out and hunt. if i go out into the wilderness and see a dead animal, that's unfortunate but that's life. that's their habitat. if roadkill is continuously delivered to the front door of my apartment, that is not me being a 'puritan who cant handle """"dark themes"""" or the reality of death' or whatever. thats an issue of it's my fucking house and i shouldnt have to build it up like a fortress of browser extensions to be able to choose what goes into it.

𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋 . . .

i. This is an Independent & Extremely Private roleplay blog for Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII / Kingdom Hearts. I am incredibly selective in who I choose to write with for personal comfort.

18+ will be the age for following & interacting for normal interactions, but anything delving into darker more adult in nature, will only be done with others that are 21+ WHO I TRUST. I will not interact with Minors.

ii. Both Squall & the series itself deal heavily with mentions of war & its after effects. There are also mentions of existentialism, depression, child soldiers & darker, more mature themes revolving around death & memory loss. If you’re uncomfortable with anything mentioned, I highly advise you not to follow or interact with me. I will issue warnings / make sure to tag things accordingly, but I plan to explore each faucet of his character & story to the fullest, including all the darker aspects as respectfully as I can manage. That being said, anything portrayed is purely fictional & does not correlate with my own beliefs. I am not my Muse.

iii. I am fine with Mains — but not Exclusives. A main is someone whose lore is either greatly tied to or heavily influences my own, but I will always adhere to fit another’s world-building in the event it’s preferred over following my own. Anyone that’s been a mutual for a long enough while, has written with me for more than a handful of threads or talked to me a fair amount out of character can ASK ME to be my Main & are more then welcome to tie-in or take from my lore for their own muse if we have Verses developed for them or plans to make one.

The reason I am uncomfortable with practicing Exclusives is I personally find it incredibly limiting & have had one too many bad experiences in the past regarding it.

iv. On the topic of Mains — threads & asks with my Mains will always be prioritized as they’re the interactions I feel most at ease answering.

v. I do not participate in drama. I hardly involve myself in things of that nature unless it’s truly serious. What I mean by that is if a mun actively displays behaviour that is dangerous or abusive ( displays obsessive behaviour / goes out of their way to follow or harass others, homophobia / transphobia / racism / pedophilia, etc. ), it is obviously serious & needs to be discussed. But other things ( miscommunication, etc. ) should be addressed privately. If you bring up issues like that about a third party with me, I will ignore it & cut contact.

IF THE SITUATION CALLS FOR IT — I will of course make an informed decision privately & decide whether I will cease interactions or not. If I have a problem with someone, typically I’ll block & cut contact & I expect the same in return. If I see Mutuals participating in call out posts to a degree where it starts to become uncomfortable — I will also cut contact. This is a hobby, once again — so I’d prefer to keep the stress out of it for my own sanity.

vi. Regarding personal blogs, reblog spam & non-Mutuals. Please do not reblog my RP threads unless you are my RP partner. Do not reblog my written headcanon posts either, as those are based purely off my own portrayal & his dynamics built with other muns & their portrayals. Doing so will result in a hard block as I am incredibly protective of what content I make for my portrayal of Squall & Leon. I am fine with liking so long as it’s not excessive & taking over a chunk of my notifications, but reblogging closed threads or any of my written headcanon posts will result in a hard block.

vii. I am NOT an rp resource blog — it bothers me when people only follow with me to grab things for their own blogs. Please do not reblog askmemes / musings / aesthetic posts directly from me in excess. Reblog it from the source directly if you’re able to! It clogs my notifications, so ignorance of that will result in cut contact if it’s been done one too many times. As for reblog Karma, I don’t practice it. I want interactions to be born from genuine interest, not because it feels like the other party needs to.

𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐘 . . .

i. I am highly private & highly selective. This is for my own comfort, please also understand that I am also not obligated to respond / answer all asks sent my way. This is a hobby, & purely done for fun. If this rule is forgotten, a hard block will follow. I will also not have the Anon function on for that reason.

ii. I don’t have any triggers to watch out for, but I will still take care to tag the common ones. If you are a mutual of mine who needs anything specifically tagged, please let me know through DMs so I am made aware what to tag in the future.

iii. For other muns who also write Squall! I love Duplicates / Twins! I am always willing to make a twin verse or create one for Mutuals who share the same muse. I’m a firm believer that each portrayal is different, unique to the mun writing them & bringing them to life, so please know that my blog is safe to poke for twin shenanigans or to follow.

iv. I am also Multimuse friendly! Though for Original Characters, while I am open to interactions, I am highly selective — please have an about page / post / Google doc available to look over as it helps me tremendously in learning about your muse. If one is not present, I likely won’t follow back.

v. I am open to crossovers, but I am also very selective in what I choose to tackle. I don’t normally mind giving them a try so long as I’m familiar with the fandom / mun / muse & said mun is patient with me.

vi. If you see me interacting with a character you also write, please don’t assume I won’t want to interact. Each portrayal is different & I adore meeting new muns & seeing their take on a character. No two portrayals are ever the same & I’m always down to interact.

𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐆 . . .

i. My Portrayal of Squall is Demiromantic / Demisexual, but he is also Bi-Oriented. This means he only feels Romantic / Sexual attraction towards someone he’s developed a very strong bond with. A very strong connection usually comes first before there’s any sort of attraction.

ii. My blog is a multi-ship one & I’m always down to try anything within reason. I love exploring all sorts of dynamics & giving rarepairs a try — they just need to be within comfort for me & we need to communicate ooc at least a little, but if you’d like to shoot — I am always open to discuss a ships potential!

Talk to me & be direct is all I ask about what kind of relationship you want with Squall — I am not a mind-reader & only hinting or vagueing, expecting me to catch on that you want to ship without telling me about it will fly right over my head otherwise.

For ships — each role-player has their own universe & my Muse is always faithful to whomever he’s in a relationship with. I have zero tolerance for possessiveness or jealousy shown ooc. It is a huge trigger of mine to be restricted in such a way so please be mindful of that or you will be hard blocked.

iii. Forcing a ship is an instant way for me to cut contact & cease interactions altogether. Squall will not immediately jump into a ship with your muse. He will need time to get to know the other muse, even if they are someone he’s generally paired with. Portrayals won’t always click, so unless it’s been discussed & plotted in private beforehand, I won’t jump in right off the bat. Shipping is lovely! I adore it! But it’s never going to be a main priority of mine. I will treat each interaction as purely platonic unless the other mun has talked to me. I am also going to start being more selective when it comes to shipping him romantically; if you want to ship?

Please show me by being willing to put in the appropriate effort & work & actually communicate & plot with me. I don't just want Squall to be a ship that is added to a collection.

iv. I want to also state that Squall is always open for all kinds of ships, not just Romantic ones! As your tired local Aromantic, I highly value Platonic relationships so, if you wanted to write that kind of dynamic with him? I would absolutely adore exploring it. Same goes for Antagonistic or more complicated ones!

i. Because of the nature of my muse & the series he’s from, there will be NSFW content explored on this blog ( violence / darker themes, etc. ). This is no place for Minors & because of this & since I am also well over the age of 21, I will not interact with anyone under the age of 21 regarding NSFW content. Anything falling into mature territory will always be tagged accordingly. If you do not wish to see such content then please either blacklist the following tags:

ii. I will only write explicit NSFW with people I know & trust — there will be no exceptions to this. I also only want to explore spicier scenarios within a safe, comfortable environment — again, with close friends.

i. Do not guilt me to reply to threads. Giving me a poke every so often to check in is fine, as long as it’s not overly excessive or meant to push me to respond faster. It makes me incredibly anxious & only makes me less motivated to interact overall. Do not bring up my activity on other blogs / social platforms. Keeping tabs on my activity is a huge trigger of mine from bad past instances & is a sure fire way to get hard blocked with no warning if it is practiced.

ii. I do not tolerate theft / stealing of any sort. There is a difference between ‘being inspired’ & ripping something off near word for word. People work hard on their muses, so theft of headcanons, verses, graphics / aesthetics, etc. will be reason enough for me to cut contact abruptly.

iii. For personal reasons, I am incredibly uncomfortable with self-insert characters. I will not interact with self-insert characters.

iv. I AM NOT MY MUSE. MUN DOES NOT EQUAL MUSE. Please do not talk to me ooc like I am my muse at any point please. Once again, bad instances in the past have made this a highly uncomfortable issue for me that I need to have written out & reminded just in case.

v. If I am uncomfortable with someone & / or enough warnings have been given & ignored — I will block & cease all interactions / contact altogether.

𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐄𝐎𝐔𝐒 . . .

i. The best way to interact & get muses writing together is through Askmemes! It helps me get a good feel of our muses, on whether their dynamic works or they mesh well or not. Plotting generally happens once there’s more of a solid dynamic built to build off of.

ii. All of my threads are considered Closed Threads with the tagged muse / mun unless it’s stated to be an Open Starter / Thread. Please don’t reblog RP threads of mine unless you are my RP partner. Solo Drabbles where I’m writing alone are fine to like, but I am uncomfortable with them being reblogged unless permission beforehand has been given to do so.

iii. I do have a Dis.cord, but I tend to keep that to close Mutuals only. But if we have a fair amount of threads / interactions together & there is an interest or it’s easier for you, I don’t mind being asked for it.

iv. I will often reblog ask replies from partners to archive them. There won’t be a guarantee that I’ll always reply — I’m only selective so I don’t overwhelm myself — but if you’d ever like to turn a response of my own or yours into a thread, don’t hesitate to let me know.

v. I am a literate roleplayer with an admitted preference for longer, more plot heavy threads, so I do respect lengthier & more detailed responses — however, it’s not a requirement & I never go into an interaction expecting it. so long as you’re giving effort to reply & actively showing interest in our threads, I don’t mind shorter ones. Please never feel obligated or pressured to match my length. I’m here to build a story with you, not to judge you on how much you can write.

vi. Regarding Godmoding — I am generally alright with these kind of interactions given my muses occupation & canon encounters with those more inhuman. But it all boils down to communication on how smoothly it’ll go. I don’t mind my muse being manhandled ( shoved / pushed / grabbed / etc. ) or injured / wounded, but please allow me to write my muse’s reactions in turn.

Generally I will keep things vague & not as descriptive if we haven’t written together long or haven’t plotted things that far, & if I ever do plan to take a thread in a more violent direction, I will message you beforehand to make sure it’s alright — I expect this in return as well. If I ever do something in a thread you don’t like or that you think is unlikely, message me & I’ll edit my post. Again. I expect the same courtesy extended my way — communication is key.

I know all stories about Freddie are apocryphal, but I really want this to have happened exactly like this, with Freddie heaving Marc over his shoulder. (Well according to Phoebe, he did like to pick people up, literally.)

And on Bowie:

I wonder how he felt when Bowie recanted his claims of being bisexual in the early 80s. “Oh, I never really thought he was,” he says. “Bowie was an artistic free spirit and he probably did dabble a bit. It was the saying it that was great; no one had ever said that before.”

I agree with this, and what writer Simon Reynolds has said about Bowie walking back being bisexual. He’s important to LGBT culture, sure, but I think fans need him to be a bi icon more than he was one.

Freddie deserves a better biography. Not another Lesley Jones book or any of the cobbled together “journalist” penned bios, but something sensitively written that could introduce him to new fans in a proper way. A while ago I went looking for a particular book about Bowie, and even in my branch library, there was an entire shelf devoted to him. Freddie? Lesley Jones’s book was there, and the one Mark Blake book about Queen, but that was it. It’s baffling that there isn’t anything better. The best ones, of course, are the memoirs written by Jim and Phoebe and a few others who knew him, but they’re hard to find (I have an e-book of the Minns book and link to Jim’s in a PDF file that I can no longer find), and the language in them is dated. And even those feel... incomplete?

One of my favorite bands for the past twenty years is the Replacements. I know American indie bands of the 80s have little presence here, but I spent an inordinate of my time and dedication to a band that a whole lot of people haven’t heard of. But in 2016, Bob Mehr wrote a really excellent bio of them called Trouble Boys. Before that there was a middling “oral history,” one photo collection and a documentary about their fans. For a band that stayed a “cult” favorite, that’s more than I could have asked for. That no one can seem to get an artist as big as Freddie right is really unfair.

The reason why Mary’s comments that Freddie “saved her” from getting AIDS by leaving her sounds selfish either way it’s interpreted is that she, a woman, and straight woman at that isn’t “supposed to get AIDS,” as was the prevailing narrative at the time. “Innocent victims” were children and women with closeted partners who were HIV-positive. Gay men, IV drug users were “asking for it” with their “risky behavior.” Casual bigotry is still bigotry. Generational context can only take you so far.

Now, I’m not a barbarian. If I am entering the home of someone from a culture in which wearing street shoes inside is a sign of disrespect, or if my shoes are covered in snow, mud, blood, condiments of any sort, lava, excrement, concrete dust, or biomedical hazardous waste, I’m of course going to take them off. And I don’t really need to be told to do so.

But barring shoes outright just to keep your floors clean is bringing a gun to a pillow fight. Turns out there’s already an effective old-fashioned way to achieve your goal of a clean floor while neither insulting my hygiene habits nor endangering my delicate, vulnerable, long-suffering feet: It’s called a doormat.

How sensitive of you to acknowledge different cultural values, but don’t wear shoes in someone’s home if they ask you to remove them because IT’S NOT YOUR HOUSE. Your delicate. long-suffering feet? Seriously? Baby.

He recognises the tactics of several of the most recent raids against King Vince's strongholds - like so many Helmsley learnt from the Kowalski's Ars Belli Pulchrae but he was taught all the ways to lie and cheat in war, all things the Ars Belli Pulchrae would never have taught, by Sir William of Regal, and the way Duke Tony's raiders attacked the castle at Full Sail, that was pure William.

Helmsley can't claim that he doesn't know what grievances started this war, what has lead so many of his friends to join with the traitor Duke Tony. He shares so many of them, but he made his choice, years ago, and he'll stay true to it.

That was why the Bureau had put him and Hobbs (of course 'and Hobbs') on the drugs running case out of Jacksonville. Darby, meanwhile, knows he's "the posterboy for tweakers" (thank you, Ricky Starks), and you know what, he's sure he'd ace this undercover mission in other circumstances, but he's been given the straightest arrow since Joe Friday as his partner. Darby understands why departmental policy is no-one goes undercover alone, but he knows how he's going to infiltrate the biker gang with a sideline in meth (or the meth gang with a sideline in bikes, opinion varies), but he has no idea how Sting plans to because the man radiates "don't mind me, busy being responsible and good." Everyone knows he ought to be Bureau Chief and the only reason he isn't is because he doesn't want the job, because he doesn't want the IV antacids Taz says are required to cope with the agita that inevitably comes with it. Darby plays his face as strong as he can while Sting turns up on the Friday. In a suit. In a biker bar. It goes as well as expected. "I just want a beer, alright." And it's like Sting straightens up and suddenly realises that Sting is not a small man - not as big as several of the bikers, but serious enough that they aren't going to do anything. Somehow it works, Darby spends more time in the bar, but they just accept Sting as a businessman who has to commute and uses the bar as a good place to break, and maybe spends more time there than he intends, and more money, and more time and money on some of the girls. Darby isn't sure how that slow (really, really slow) but steadily progressing investigation descends into him and Sting fighting their way through the gang and eventually Sting riding a monster truck over all their bikes. He is reasonably sure he heard maniacal laughter out of Sting. He definitely heard Taz laughing. In fact, he's not sure if Taz is ever going to stop laughing. "Are you not surprised?" Because, see also, Straight Arrow Sting turning out to know three monster truck owners well enough to ask to borrow their pride and joys ... "You do know he was like Californian trick surfing champion ... thirty, ... no forty years ago. You don't grow out of that kind of stupid." Well he never!

Calling all MOAs! The season of gift giving is upon us, everyone! And become that’s the case, @moacentral presents, inspired by the carats by Secret Carat, Secret MOA, a fun event made with the intent to foster new relationships with fellow MOAs who share the same interests as you, and for you to give and receive a nice little gift at the end of it!

Together we can make this season amazing and share all the love we have to give as a community! We here on moablr have to stick together! If you're interested in the event, it's very easy to particpate! All you need to do is follow a few steps:

1) i've been into typology for a good decade now, i don't even remember where i got all my knowledge from anymore. once you get the basics down, you observe the people around you more and read less theory anyway

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

it was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung's theory of personality types and tries to offer an explanation on how people of different types process information and make decisions differently. since i'm way too lazy to actually explain this theory in detail, i'm just gonna refer you to Em's crash course here. on that note, also check out her posts where she contrasts the different functions. i like her explanations because, unlike other sources, they aren't accidentally mixed with enneagram theory

Enneagram

it attempts to explain people's personality by identifying core fears/desires. Riso & Hudson are pretty solid and you can check out their website

the only thing i'm missing there is the distinction between phobic (p) and counterphobic (cp) 6. the theory goes that since 6's core fear is fear itself, 6 has come up with two different strategies to deal with it: either by running (phobic) or by "confronting" (counterphobic)

there exists also the tritype theory by Fauvre which i - more or less - subscribe to so i'm gonna link to her website too

don't bother with anything related to Chestnut or Naranjo. they don't offer anything of substantial worth to the discussion and their books are only good for kindling

Instinctual Variant (IV)

another tool to type people, the enneagram institute site i linked to also talks about the three instincts briefly. iv is usually the aspect of typology people grapple the most with because the descriptions are pretty vague because they try to sort people into only six categories. i still have an anon sitting in my inbox asking about my definitions so you can watch out for whenever i find the time to answer that ask. in the meantime you can go through my #iv tag. i also have tons of other good resources saved in my likes that i will try to reblog in the coming days (the pain of having to go thru 8.000+ likes tho, rip)

to wrap this up, all tests suck and anyone who calls themself a "typology expert" and demands money is trash. instead i'll recommend you some blogs who are actually reliable sources and know what they are talking about

@istj-hedonist Marri, an ISTJ with excellent use of dom Si. she offers good insights, nice aesthetics, as well as visual typing information

@ill-be-istj-if-no-one-else-is Em, another ISTJ. she offers to type people via a description. her dom Si does a solid job at identifying people's type

@mbtiguy-archive Sarah, an ESTP who is inactive, but her archive is still around. her dom Se offered some really good observations and she was also pro typing by ~vibes~

2) visual typing works on the assumption that people with the same personality type have the same physical features. while there have already been past attempts by other people to identify these traits, Marri is the one who actually offered a clear and comprehensive guide on what to look for. you can go through her #visual typing tag for more information

typing based on vibes operates on pretty much the same principle. people of the same personality type have the same kind of... vibe/air/feel/temperament/whatever you wanna call it, to them and you can tell that pretty well in person, but it also works on tumblr because of its nature. people of different types are drawn to different aesthetics, relate to different posts, and word themself in a specific way that you can pinpoint to a certain type

typing based on visual cues/vibes is pretty much just either Si recognising a pattern or Se excelling at reading people

3) if you're talking traditional typing à la self-typing based on understanding the theory, reading up on functions, identifying behavioural patterns, etc. i'd say it's best to type yourself once your brain has fully developed (~25) and you are recognised as an adult. it's infinitely more valuable that you actually experience life, work through your issues, improve your skills, and do some introspection in order to develop as a person outside of typology. the nerd stuff can definitely wait

however if you are talking about at which age you can reliably visual type, that's different. i think that one is born with their mbti type and first instinct, so you can already type toddlers if you want to. the second instinct probably develops somewhere around your pre-teens and is (mostly) dependent on your environment. as for the ennea core, i'd say it's a mix of nature and nurture. depending on your mbti/natural disposition and the sort of environment you grow up in. it probably develops roughly around the same time your second instinct forms. also, if you buy into tritype theory, you have to consider that certain fixes will be more prominent at certain stages. an easy and obvious example is the heart-fix. when you are a teenager, you will be mostly preoccupied with your image/issues involving shame. for that reason i wouldn't type anyone who is still in their teenage years because the heart-fix will be naturally more prominent and might be mistaken as the core when it's maybe not

i used to be very active in the cottagecore realm in 2018. im not alone in this, but i had my cottagecore blog before the word “cottagecore” was coined, and thus before it was presupposed that the lifestyle and aesthetic being posted about had anything in particular to do with cottages. a lot of the relevant posts found their way to me through other tags— dirtcore, plantcore, grandmacore, solarpunk, diy, etc— or just through the sheer natural popularity of the posts that ended up defining the cottagecore style

over the time between like 2016-2018, i had been pivoting away from my 90s/arcade themed aesthetic that i had fostered since like 2013 or something, because the colorful carpets and cheap plastic toys and bubblegum dispenser candies and slimes were beginning to be presumed to be part of something called “kidcore”, and kidcore was having a problem

the issue at hand for kidcore (and stim tumblr as well) was that ageplay and other controversial/triggering kink accounts were openly interacting with and advertising themselves on posts that were either meant for kids and age regressors, or themed around the original poster’s own childhood. as a result, kidcore/age regression and ageplay/kink were getting weirdly and uncomfortably conflated. it was a huge issue that i found really offputting, so i just bailed from the use of that visual language in general

the way that many, many kidcore and stim bloggers responded to these kinds of issues was to diligently put a DNI banner at the bottom of every single post, no matter how unsightly or combative that seemed. at the time, i thought that this was kind of a hopeless exercise. i thought that kidcore as an aesthetic would never really manage to extricate its content and reputation from that offputting area of kink tumblr, but it seems like i was wrong. through just like the sheer saturation of in-post DNI banners, it seemed to work. kidcore was more safe for kids and age regressors to blog and reblog about without getting weird fucked up interactions, and people seemed to be under less scrutiny for having a kidcore blog at all because it was no longer uncomfortably conflated with kink to that degree

the thing i admire most about this is that so many kidcore and stim bloggers decided all on their own that they wanted make it clear who their blog was and wasnt a safe space for. more of them could have decided to ignore the issue, more of them could have said that naysayers “just dont get it”, and more of them could have decided that they didnt mind added traffic, no matter who it came from. but these posters were uncomfortable with the issue, so they made that discomfort known at every opportunity.

this sort of stands in contrast to how most cottagecore bloggers ive seen have responded to the realization that cottagecore was growing to be popular with ecofascists and weird patriarchal tradcath & colonialist bloggers, esp since like 2019 or so. some bloggers sacrificed the simple aesthetic by adding DNI banners, but compared to the DNI saturation of kidcore bloggers, these were few and far between. also, weirdly, most of those banners also pertained to the kink-related boundaries that kidcore and stim bloggers had to set, and generally said little about politics except sometimes that terfs were unwelcome. anecdotally, i dont personally recall ever seeing a banner that said something like “dont interact if youre an ecofascist or christian nationalist!” or anything like that underneath any of the crafty and pastoral cottagecore imagery that ive encountered over the years.

the most common response that i saw from cottagecore bloggers to all the criticism and suspicion in 2019-2020 was every cottagecore blogger going on the defensive— “the accusations of cottagecore bloggers being right-wing or colonialist are false and not worth our time. anybody who spent any time in our community would know that plenty of us are leftist or poc!!” — for roughly one or two posts, and then never responding to the criticism again unless it came to their askbox specifically.

in short, the message a lot of cottagecore bloggers sent with their posts was not “ecofascists are unwelcome here,” but instead “critics who point out the ecofascist issue are unwelcome here.” and ecofascists and their ilk kept reblogging the same mushrooms and lace curtains and transparent homemade pie pngs as everybody else, unperturbed. there was no concerted effort to make it clear at every fucking turn that fascists were unwelcome

i ended up just drifting away from the cottagecore tag family over the course of 2019 to focus my gardening/naturalist/diy energies more directly on leftist environmentalism rather than aesthetic. since then, ive been thinking about the difference between cottagecore and the previous tumblr aesthetic i unintentionally joined and intentionally abandoned, kidcore. i have watched the response of both groups to these kinds of issues from a short distance, and i feel like kidcore posters better rose to the challenge of community infiltration by parties with harmful views and intentions. less kidcore bloggers have their DNIs directly in their posts nowadays from what ive seen, but the popular DNI banner phase of the kidcore world seemed to be essential and effective in establishing who the tag was and wasn’t meant for. no effort like this has been widespread on cottagecore tumblr, particularly among popular cottagecore posters, and so the reputational damage and the failure to exclude literal fascists from the main bulk of the aesthetic’s ecosystem continues to persist.

i guess overall the stories of these aesthetics (as i witnessed them) are just an interesting anecdotal comparison of how tolerating individuals that make vulnerable/marginalized members of a community feel threatened lead to that community becoming de-facto dominated (or assumed to be dominated) by those who are making others feel threatened, as vulnerable/marginalized members leave and additional vulnerable/marginalized people are deterred from ever joining. whereas proactively stating boundaries again and again and again leads to the creation of a better safe space, as well as a culture of awareness about the issues at hand

the cat was called pussboy by tommy, but dream only called it "the cat" and then said that "it was hope", which is why it sort of became a symbol (his hope is dead, basically) - that's why i kind of made its name capitalized, because it was more of a metaphor than anything.

most c!dream fans call the cat hope because it's just really nice and really symbolic, and also really sad when you think about it. that's why the name was used in the essay, just to clear up the confusion!

tommy killing that cat was nothing compared to dream killing mushroom henry in exile

i don't really think so? mooshroom henry was entertainment more than anything, and even if it was bad, when watching the stream i don't remember seeing him mourn that much - on the other hand, dream was very quickly and very obviously attached to the cat, with it being his only companion in months of isolation, along with the hope that even when tommy left it would keep him company.

keep in mind c!dream has been deprived of stimuli and human contact for so long it's officially classified as psychological torture at that point.

i don't mean to compare trauma or even compare deaths - because honestly, what c!dream and c!tommy have gone through individually is incomparable and i think neither should be diminished in favor of the other since they're both terrible situations.

that's why i disagree that it "was nothing compared to" - it had an obvious effect on c!dream, and was still c!tommy killing an animal specifically to hurt him, no matter what reasons he had.

when i'm talking about effects people's actions have had on c!dream, i'm not talking about those people. i'm talking about him. :) /lh

as for the trauma, a lot of people agree that a lot of the things he says or does are trauma responses, and hence it's very possible that he's had trauma before he went into prison!

this includes being repeatedly called a tyrant via propaganda by about half of your friends who decided to betray you, trying to keep peace and being pushed deeper into villainy instead, repeatedly being put in between a rock and a hard place in order to make sure the people you care about don't start killing each other, then being betrayed by your closest friends after merely trying to keep peace (sapnap & george) and just in general having no control over your life or image and grasping at straws to gain it back.

i know a lot of people with trauma who heavily relate to certain trauma responses, which aren't always just shaky breaths and flashbacks, but trauma often also manifests itself in extremely ugly and destructive ways, both inwardly and outwardly.

trying to control the people around you is also very often a response to going through trauma, as well as emotional repression which is... rather evident on c!dream during season two. it only seems to get worse with repeated abandonment.

in the end, during the vault scene, the way he acts really just isn't at all the way a healthy person would act, and a lot of his really bad mindsets come from the way he was taught by the world around him.

the character is very reserved however, and since we don't have his pov we can't really say for certain - a lot of people claim it in good faith because they have a lot of evidence for it, and i think they're certainly valid in that.

that is just before the prison, however. from what happened during the prison arc? there is no denying he's traumatized at this point.

he's been emotionally and physically abused by c!sam since the very beginning of being imprisoned, and being in solitary confinement for over two weeks is generally considered psychological (and maybe also physical?) torture. that alone shows up in a lot of symptoms of his mental deterioration while in pandora's during people's visits, and quackity's "sessions" just absolutely drove the point home.

what he's gone through during this arc is absolutely incomparable to anything others charactes have faced before, and it's just plain suffering being endured by someone who is, despite everything, still a human being.

as for the wilbur manipulation thing!! it's talking about the whole vassal scene (though even beforehand a lot of their interactions are pretty iffy), and here's a post about that :]

I also have a small question about the analysis u last reblogged cus it says "why dream needed lmanburg gone rightfully" and like. The house analogy is poor because for one cus the land is infinite. And 2 cus punz's yard was literally larger then lmanburg. And also stuff about dream being a mediator? Can u provide examples?

i wouldn't say it was poor. dream's said a lot of times that he didn't care in the slightest about the land - a lot of his problems with l'manberg arose with the fact that wilbur basically built it on lies and tried to disallow half of the server to come there. c!dream was mad about the division and the fact that wilbur wanted "freedom" to have authority in his lands - over others, as can be seen in this post also.

the table analogy was fitting not because dream was some overlord, but because these were literally friends he invited to hang out and live in a place he wanted to call home. claiming a part of it for yourself and saying people of a certain nationality can't come in is directly opposing those goals.

in the early days of the smp, dream's always been a mediator between his friends - sapnap and george, who would often get into fights and go around killing each other! he would always do his best to stop the conflict, which continued after tommy joined when he took him to court and then later tried to mediate conflicts he was a part of, which resulted in tommy killing him unprovoked, stealing his gear, and starting the disc wars when dream was trying to get his stuff back. later, during pogtopia, he is also most concerned with peace over everything, and this seems to continue indefinitely after.

Today i was thinking about how messed up the final control room was. Like. Dream arranged the betrayal and punz and sapnap killed tommy and tubbo who like. Were literal children and their pals (because the author, wilbur soot, is dead/j but srsly if u take the streamers words tommy said he was 9 during the revolution sooo)

Sorry im gonna ramble about how dumb canon ages are for a second cus like. Streamers can say the characters are one way or another (wilbur saying he is mentally 30-something, etc.) But in the end the characters act like they(or at least their streaming personas) do.

i... honestly don't find it that bad? they were in a war, and the final control room was basically just supposed to end it quicker. the l'manbergians made it clear they were going to fight to the death, so they really left c!dream no other choice. and it's not like he didn't give them chances to give up.

also yeah the 9 year old thing was retconned, because in that case c!dream would've been 14 and i don't think that's true.

c!tommy and c!dream were both young and once again, in a war. the final control room was an attempt to assure victory, which both sides would've taken if possible, but only c!dream saw he had the option.

i do agree the whole child soldier thing was bad but... complain about that to c!wilbur, methinks. he talked naive kids into fighting for his personal power. however, the age argument isn't really valid either way. they had enough agency to sign up for it, and whether or not c!wilbur pushing the intense nationalism onto them had something to do with that is another debate entirely.

Bacl to final control room cus like??? Also fun fact punz took 2 of wilbur's canon lives. And like that probably is what started wilbur's paranoia which later lead to his spiral and i. Many thoughts full of lmanburg today.

i'm pretty sure cc!wilbur said what lead to c!wilbur's spiral was a "dark, twister view of possessions" and "disregard for his fellow citizen whom he claimed to love so much", but i really wouldn't say it was the control room; if anything the sudden loss of power after the elections seems to me like the trigger for his spiral.

I watched the exile arc live and. I feel dirty almost for feeling little to no sympathy for c!dream (srry ive been forgetting to add that aa) because of his actions toward c!tommy and like. The whole probation was so humiliating and unfair and c!dream was planning to frame him for the crimes he and puffy did under the the guise of "pranks" and c!quackity was planning to seize the vice president role.

i mean... to be fair, if you didn't watch the prison arc much yet or only watch tommy's perspective i understand not feeling that sympathetic - however, i encourage you to maybe watch a few prison visits, since they could help you see the whole picture better!

i also watched it live, and i also thought it was terrible, but i share very much the same sentiment for the prison arc because. absolutely no one should have to go through either of those things, you know?

i don't think probation was that humiliating? he was just. being asked to not start conflict with the other factions for two weeks. of course, what happened as a result is in no way justified, but i don't think probation itself would've been bad at all. either way yeah the framing and c!quackity's behaviour was. very yikes, i agree.

Also c!tommy antis are dumb because they say "he deserved exile angry emoji" i dont see u saying that about ranboo. Just say you hate cc!tommy and go. Also people say c!tommy was just as toxic to c!dream and i??? No. One is the victim and one is the abuser and like. :/// man. This part is rambly srry

i wouldn't say they hate cc!tommy? cc!tommy has a persona who people think is annoying at first ( but then they subscribe because he is super entertaining big man! ) but a lot of c!tommy's actions are straight up toxic to certain characters, such as c!funndy and c!jack. he has a very dismissive attitude towards others and their trauma and it does affect the people around them very negatively.

examples; his repeated bullying and behavior towards fundy:

Tommy: “Fundy, I’m just here to kinda let you know that I – if you weren’t Wilbur’s son, you would be out of L’manburg, alright? Just remember – you need to keep that relationship with your father. I saw how asshole-y and bratty you were acting in the courtroom the other night. You need to pull your shit together young man.”

he's also responsible for a big chunk of c!jack's trauma, both with actions and words, and that's why i think certain people might dislike the character, and i don't think that's wrong of them. anyone can dislike any character they want if they don't attack people for liking them, in my opinion.

also c!tommy was most definitely toxic against c!dream in the cell. it's of course understandable but that doesn't change the fact he was constantly hitting and insulting him (without dream doing anything back for a long while until he snapped) which is toxic behaviour.

i wouldn't say he was "just as" though, so i agree with you on that. they're different and they behave differently.

i guess its kinda hypocritical but i fucking loathe the tone people on reddit and twitter have when they talk about this site. they treat it like its some sort of nuclear fallout area. dead, barren, uninhabitable, because staff did a bad job of banning porn once years ago, and now because theyre taking extra measures to make sure their social media site is usable on iOS with the stupid draconian puritan rules going on in Apple

i dont think tumblr is some Garden of Eden but it might as well be compared to literally any other social media site. actual discussions happen, people actually learn things albeit in comedic ways that usually involve refuting bogus information in the same post that it’s presented, and ive never once had to calm myself down after seeing fucking stupid takes because people here know they’re stupid and will happily shine a spotlight on it so other people can either ignore it or raize the idiot. meanwhile the other sites are literal comment mind fields. i have to stop myself from getting into arguments in twitter comments just because it’s pointless cause people are reactionary, stupid, and steadfast. but here i can either ignore stupid takes, or find posts about how they openly reblog inflati*n art or some shit.

thats not even getting into the fucking awful metric systems and the weird limitations all other social media sites have that actively try to cater towards the Internet Free Space being a Market and way to profit and nothing more.

and of course there are tons of issues with the site. i wont list any of them here but they’re obvious to anybody that’s ever used websites (hello audio volume control). but again other social media sites have problems similar to and just as bad as, if not worse than those issues.

but like. over the past few years tumblr has became genuinely my favorite social media site because it actually does what it sets out to do.

the way you interact with other blogs works. i think they should bring back the ability to one-way mirror anonymous asks you get, but otherwise it gets the job done. notifications aren’t obnoxious and the focus is sharing good content, not trying to make your own for 5 seconds of fame. people still think randy slimetony posts here for heavens sake

once you find a few blogs that think like you it turns into the most easygoing and enjoyable experience possible. and sure it can create echo chambers, but literally any social media site, or site in general, does that these days. but like ive found like 50 blogs that are people i enjoy reading posts from, and they always post funny shit, and i dont have to worry about them taking weird dumbass stances in an attempt to broaden their horizons. only idiots try to make a brand out of themselves here outside of “funny guy that posts a lot”. at least not in asinine ways. meanwhile that’s the raison d'être of twitter culture

Ok this isnt my usual way of doing things cuz... Well, tbh i dont really care enough to actually make a post bout most things, id just rather reblog shit, but I've now seen several posts comparing the Loki finale with spn's and just... Where?

Spn ended as a show with one of the most hopelessness inducing shit I've ever seen, taking a character thats been consistently seen as at the very least depressed and killing him off with a 'that's what his happy ending looks like' plastered on it, another character who's whole ark was reconciling with himself about who he is only to make him essentially cut half of himself out for a kid and also still be unhappy, and a third who's whole thing was learning what free will is and that he too deserves free will only to have him go back to obeying orders in heaven. It was absolutely against everything the show had portrayed for 15 years, including in the actual season this finale was a part of.

Loki is an on going show (s 2 confirmed), but even if it hadn't been, the shows main narrative themes remained true to the end, Loki did in fact grow as a character, the shows ultimate plot is about free will, tackling also the fact that free will means shit will also happen, its not only roses and happiness and Sylvie stuck to her actual goal and achieved it, aka killing whoever was behing the TVA. Loki's goal throughtout the show wasn't killing the Time keepers, it was having the free will to write his own life story and he's done and doing exactly that, sometimes that means shit happens, no characters died needlessly in my opinion and as I've said, in no way did it go against its own themes that it established initially. Not to mention the fact again that it's ongoing!

Finally to touch on what people are really complaining about (the more vocal post I've seen circulating, I've no doubt some people just genuinely didn't like it and thats fine) which is the Sylvie/Loki thing. Ok lets discuss. Firstly, if it's not ur thing that's entirely fine, its not mine either, but to claim it's a problem for u cuz it's, as Ive seen multiole people say, heteronormative is hella problematic to me since it seems to erase the fact that both characters by their own words are bi/pan. That's shitty. Number 2: 'if Sylvie was male presenting they wouldn't have gone there'... Now while I do think Marvel/Disney wouldnt likely have the balls, I still find issue with this statement since it feels very... Sexist to me. I dunno what exactly about it, but it very much reads like y'all would not complain bout the pairing if Sylvie was male presenting more so than a dig at Marvel/Disney and that is not cool with me. And finally, C the selfcest thing as incest stand-in. Ok so I get that selfcest aint for everyone, which again, fair point if u just dont vibe at all, but the actual issues people seem to have is less with it being selfcest and more that its not mlm, which is highly hypocritical. Now to the people who do just dislike it for being basically incest, ur perogative, ur view , but I'd've hoped that the whole multivers aspect of this show could've made it clearer that while they are variants of each other they are not actually the same person. Also also since the spn parallel is what began this, to the spn fans I ask, how tf can y'all not see this, the multuple versions of Sam and Dean alone should have you realize it's someones history, experience, surroundings, accuaintances that mould a person. We don't even know for sure if they share parents! Its a dif universe they've been born in, oddly enough that means they couldn't be more physically different, even if they may share some personality traits or some history between them. Again, i dont ship it, it feels awkward to me based on their interactions, but that doesnt mean imma say some bullshit bout incest just cuz I dont like the idea. Fact is they're not actually related and, as an aside, the would u fuck ur clone talk has been around for ages with little issues about incest because its already covered in the meme as is the pollar opposite.

Ok this was rambly and well, hopefully some of my points have been made clear. To end I just wanna say I do look forward to season 2, I can't wait to see Mobius and Loki reacquaint now that we have a Mobius that doesnt remember/know Loki it'll be a nice juxtapose to their relation this season (yes i ship it, whatever) and also also wanna see what's gonna happen with Kang overall and with Sylvie. She wasn't having a good time there.

So quick add, I just realised why the comparison fucks with me so much more than other shit and it's cuz it reduces both finales to shipping, thats why it annoys me, it essentially undermines Loki's whole arc and reduces it to shipping and it also undermines just how bad spn ended and why its bad since it also reduces it to a ship. Neither are bad or good because of a ship being canon or not on its own and seeing this comparison makes it seem very much like thats the reason spn ended bad and equally makes Loki ending bad because of course it would if the ship didnt go the way you wanted it. But thats not the way to measure a show like Loki or Spn, or at least def not the only measurement to apply for the end conclusion.

Could you go into the difference between the subtext and queerbaiting in it, I'm still kind of -well it's obviously gay but nothing was really ever said or shown that says that expect for people talking about it- Like are the characters and their relationship just queer-coded (positivly ofc lol) but the baitiness comes from them sort of confirming it off the show?

of course! im assuming by ‘it’ you mean merlin, but rather than explaining the reasons why i think bbc merlin is a matter of subtext (or queer coding) and not queerbaiting, i think it would be easier and more productive to explain the difference between the two in general. they are very similar - which is why i think a lot of people are unable to tell the difference between them - but they have important differences

just a warning, this is going to be a LONG post lmao ive bolded exactly what each term means below, after which i go into more detail on the whole issue. this is something im passionate about so,,, ♥

queerbaiting specifically refers to a marketing technique in which creators hint at but dont actually depict a queer character or relationship. They do this in order to attract a queer audience with the suggestion of a character or relationship they can relate to, while also avoiding alienating their queerphobic audiences

queer coding is the subtextual coding of a character as queer through the use of things like metaphor, allegory, hinting, recognisable traits/stereotypes/experiences, etc. This is done to build believable characters and create more complex plot lines, and it is also regularly used by people who want to tell queer stories but are unable to do so explicitly. it CAN be used negatively to enforce damaging stereotypes, but that is just a small part of its usage

both of these things utilise subtext in order to work. subtext is not only a crucial part of the creation of any piece of media, but is impossible to avoid.

an example of the most basic types of subtext is when a character tells someone that everything is going to be okay, but you can tell they dont believe it. or when youre watching a story unfold and you suddenly connect the dots and realise whats going to happen before its explicitly stated - you used subtext and the hidden meanings and hints to figure it out!

the people involved w a piece of media create their story with a specific purpose or meaning in mind, and they construct the subtext of the story to reflect that purpose/meaning. HOWEVER, the viewers dont always see things the same!

your experiences and personality shape the way you view and interpret every piece of media you consume. if you hate cops youll see the insidious undertones in cop shows - if you grew up with an abusive parent youll see the biting implications in a characters dialogue that others find innocent - if youre queer you will search for and fine queer characters everywhere, regardless of the creators intentions

now, both queerbaiting and queer coding use subtext to function, right? so how do you know which is being used and whether or not its a bad thing? its all about intention

to give a specific explanation of the difference im going to use two examples that are (arguably) very similar in the way their queer characters became canon

example 1: adventure time featured the characters marceline and princess bubblegum, who have been forever depicted as a couple in fan content. their interactions in the show were read into and latched onto bc we saw ourselves in them and we saw it as positive queer rep. but their relationship was never explicitly discussed during the course of the show and was only confirmed at the end of the final episode.

that makes 10 seasons in which their relationship existed only in subtext, and when it did finally exist in canon it was only for a few minutes, if that.

example 2: supernatural featured the characters dean and castiel (lol) who have been depicted as a queer couple pretty much since the first episode cas appeared in. i personally hung on their every interaction, analysed every glance between them, bc i interpreted deans character as a parallel to my own childhood trauma.

cas joined the show in season 4, so that makes 11 seasons in which him being gay existed only in subtext, and when it was confirmed he was immediately cut out of the show. the exact nature of dean and castiels relationship still remains in subtext.

so why is it that adventure time is widely considered perfectly fine but supernatural is dunked on as being the poster boy for queerbaiting?

its bc adventure time involved queer creators and was an earnest representation of queer characters, but they were boxed in by their publisher, Cartoon Network and thus the only way for the relationship to exist in the show was through subtext.

supernatural, however, consistently neglected their queer character and employed transparent tropes and stereotypes - bringing him in just sparingly enough to keep queer audiences interested while never being gay enough to alienate their macho manly man queerphobe audiences. they would have dean and cas stare into each other eyes for a full 30 seconds and then almost immediately follow it up with an episode about dean banging a disposable female character.

so imho adventure time falls under queer subtext, and supernatural falls under queerbaiting

when it comes to a show like bbc merlin i see a lot of debate about whether or not its queer coding or queerbaiting, and my intention is not to convince you of either. merlin was very much a product of its time, and i have argued the same about seasons 4-6 of supernatural as well, before the queerbaiting escalated and became exhausting to me

the purpose of this post is to start giving you the information you need to analyse any piece of media and come to your OWN opinion as to whether or not its queerbaiting or whatever else

people will ALWAYS have differing opinions about this shit yall. i have debated so many times w so many people about where the line is and whats okay and what should be ‘cancelled’ and if consuming something deemed problematic makes you a bad person or not

and my conclusion?

if youre capable of acknowledging the flaws and issues w a piece of media without trying to defend it as a shining beacon of purity simply bc you like it, then you do you. enjoy whatever you want to enjoy - if i think its reprehensible i simply will never interact with you lol

at some point everyone has to stop regurgitating these generic woke speak cancel culture speeches and buzzwords and formulate their own opinions

my advice to anyone reading this is to learn how to do close reading (ill provide a link to a wonderful short guide on it in a reblog bc tumblr hates links) and start really considering where you draw the lines with all types of content. decide for yourself whether merlin or supernatural or adventure time crosses the line into content you cant stomach, but respect other people whose interpretations differ from yours

i know a HUGE amount of people think supernaturals confession scene was homophobic and toxic - a slap in the face - but when i watched it i saw myself reflected in dean. a repressed bisexual whose emotions had been stunted by lifelong trauma, who wasnt ready to face his feelings for cas but quickly realising that his chronic avoidance and fear was about to tear them apart possibly forever. to me it was tragic and beautiful, and i loved it

i also think merlin is a tragic and beautiful love story, and to me its a pivotal piece of queer media that changed the way i viewed love and made me believe that it was a possibility for me bc i related so deeply to arthur

i hope that you can draw a satisfying answer from this, anon, and i apologise for this post being a full essay lol but i believe it needed to be said - i dont think there is a right or wrong answer here

yknow ive gone through my life online barely ever following or knowing someone who has a rotten opinion on something that would be considered minimal in the world outside of art. like, ive never followed someone who thought out loud that overly saturated art was ugly. uncomfortable yes, but not ugly.

the only time ive ever seen someone i follow have a bad opinion on something is with the reblog argument. i'll follow an artist, and they will no opinion on any other thing related to art, like character design, color palettes, anatomy. they keep quiet about it. but ive had artists that have openly, and unapologetically, called people greedy for wanting reblogs. at most im thankful that its only happened twice [i'd have two nickels] but its still not good.

the worst part too is that these are artists that dont have to worry about their art not getting attention. they seem to have the luck on their side when it comes to getting their art noticed and appreciated. they dont have to worry about making their stuff circle around, because it happens regardless. maybe the artsstyle they have is more favorable. maybe they have a better schedule, they know when to post their art. maybe they are better than us. but it still hurts that these artists, who will always get attention, are the same ones getting mad at those that even struggles just to get 5 likes on it.

and that simply makes me thinks theyve never had that struggle. either that, or it was never too harsh on them. i just want them to know what its like. cause if they did, maybe they would understand.

of course there are artists as well that dont get attention for their art, and will call other artist greedy for it as well. but you have to know that, its hard. youre happy with ur art no matter the attention, thats fine. but for some of us, it would be nice to know that our work is good enough to show to other people, even if they wont understand.

i'll never forget that, honestly, dumb comic i saw someone make in reply to calling artists who want attention greedy, where the premise was, "why would i reblog someone that only i would understand, and not my followers?" which thats another problem. not only are you calling other artists greedy for wantin just a small amount of attention even on their work, NOW youre trying to excuse it by saying you wont share the content you enjoy seeing on YOUR blog? the place that YOU made as a personal space for things you like and enjoy? youre refusing to let something you love even graze a place you created as your own space for your interest and fixations?

at that point, its clear you arent reblogging because you dont wanna show people something they "wouldnt be interested in". you just wont reblog it cause you dont like it. just say it. just say you dislike the art and dont think it deserves recognition. yeah, you'll be known as an asshole for openly hating on the art of smaller artists who can barely get the love their work deserve, but at least you'll be honest right? cause thats what you want?

so just go on and do that. at least people will know what type of person you are a lot quicker.

The first person I think of when discussing the term EFDD is Dr. Russell Barkley. He’s one of the leading ADHD experts, and has been a spearhead for studying executive dysfunction in people with ADHD for decades. Very much ahead of his time compared to the DSM. I’ve had his book “Taking Charge of Adult ADHD” recommended to me so many times, but have yet to read it.

Here’s an interesting article/study on EFDD! They found that “ADHD [is] associated with deficits in inhibition, managing one’s attention, self-directed speech and rule-following, self-motivation, and even self-awareness [...] ADHD therefore involves deficits in self-restraint, [...] selfsensing and imagery, self-control of emotion, and self-directed play for problem-solving.”

Thank you for motivating me to look up some articles, because I learned some new things, too! For instance, they assert that ADHD could also be called SRDD (Self-Regulation Deficit Disorder), but conclude the article by saying either SRDD or EFDD fits better than ADHD, and that the terms could be used interchangeably, because SR (self-regulation) and EF (executive function) are effectively talking about the same things. So his assertion is that even if the name ADHD never changes, it can still be scientifically classified as either of the other terms. I believe in recent years he’s preferred EFDD more and more.

[note that the above article/study is from 2011, back when we were on the DSM-IV, so a lot of research has been done since then]

If that article’s a bit wordy or you want something more visual and up-to-date, here’s a really detailed PowerPoint presentation used during the 2018 ADHD Symposium! It’s long but well-organized so you can just read the big headers or you can read all the bullet points explaining it. Keep in mind this was a lecture, so some of it probably made more sense in person. I’m glad I read this, because I realize the terminology I’ve used is slightly off: according to the Symposium, there aren’t “subtypes” of ADHD, but the different names (ADHD-PI, ADHD-PH, and ADHD-C) are really just used to show the prevalence of certain symptoms in that individual. So they’re all terms for ADHD, but “subtype” was poor word choice on my part.

Oh! I just found a video of him giving a lecture in 2012 using many of the same PowerPoint slides! Here ya go! It’s a bit longer than the other videos I’ve linked below (13min), but it might make the slides easier to interpret :)

Here’s one where he talks about our Time-Blindness! (below) I was going to pick a couple favorite quotes to give you an idea, but that’d wind up being a transcript of the whole video because HE GETS IT. This is from 2014, but I CANNOT recommend it enough!!! He mentions that ADHD doesn’t have a deficit of attention, but rather a deficit of intention. He describes us as having a near-sighted sense of time, and talks about deadlines, “laziness,” etc.

ALSO he talks about how our brains DON’T CONNECT our knowledge to our performance (back of brain to front) like everyone else’s, so we have the same level of knowledge and intelligence, but can’t access and use it the way others can. This is why teaching skills and organization/memory/time-management tips isn’t helpful -- we can learn them, but our knowledge and action centers are separated, so actually doing them/sticking with them is just as hard as before.

If you don’t watch the whole thing, at least skip to 3:29 cause that part’s really funny and relatable (ok the whole thing is relatable):

And of course, I highly recommend the YouTube channel How to ADHD! I have a couple friends who work on it, and they REALLY know their stuff! (They’re the ones who taught me during a game night that RSD isn’t a real term and it should be called “rejection-sensitivity” as part of the emotional dysregulation umbrella)

I went looking and found this video (below) has the BEST explanation of it that I’ve seen in such a concise, entertaining way. I hadn’t seen this one before, but it even covers some of the things I mentioned in that post your ask is about! Especially the Internal Restlessness that I mentioned as the true “hyperactivity” we all share; even though some of us also express outward hyperactivity, both presentations come from the same restlessness in our brains.
