24 for Daniel and Esmae?
What's On Your Mind?
The Heart Between Kingdoms / Shot in the Dark Crossover
550 words
A moment from a wild crossover @marydublinauthor I mused about 💕 Daniel and Esmae end up in modern day NYC (very Enchanted vibes) and have a run-in with the Shot trio, who aren't the best hosts at first tbh ahahaha
But this particular moment is Daniel and Esmae reuniting. They were separated the moment that they were transported across worlds :') Esmae ended up back in her true fairy form in the process ✨
Tumblr media
“Esmae?” Daniel whispered. She was fairy-sized again. He couldn’t fathom how—no more than he could fathom how they wound up in this bizarre world of lights and concrete towers.
In the dim light of the alley, Esmae’s little from seemed cautious to approach him. Her wings held her aloft, and he had to stare. He’d never seen her wings before.
“It’s… it’s me,” he said, desperate to close the distance yet terrified of scaring her off. From what little he could see of her face, she was gaping at him. He had to wonder if her memories of their life together had been stripped away somehow.
“I know,” she said finally, but she didn’t come any closer.
His heart sank. Even though she knew who he was, he must have been frightening to her. After all, it’d been years since she had to interact with him while she was the size of a mouse.
Miraculously, she came closer to him. He held out his hands automatically, slowing at the last second so she wouldn’t think he was making a grab for her. To his relief, she alighted delicately on his palm. Up close, her wings were more stunning than ever. If he wasn’t worried about passerby spotting her, he’d walk further into the light to admire the glossy colors streaked across her wings.
Esmae met his eyes for only a moment before falling to her knees and looking away, shame written all over her face.
There was no telling what she’d been through. He fought the urge to hug her close. “Are you hurt?” he breathed, bringing his other hand close to brush her arm.
“I’m alright,” she said, shaking her head.
“Then what’s on your mind?” he asked. “What’s wrong?”
What a foolish question. Everything was wrong. They had no idea where they were or how they’d gotten there—nor any idea how to return where they belonged.
“I forgot how small I really am supposed to be around you,” Esmae said.
Daniel cocked his head. She wasn’t afraid. She was mortified.
“You’re kidding,” he said softly. “Es… You’re perfect. You have no idea how perfect you are.”
She scoffed and waved a dismissive hand.
“No, really,” he insisted. “Don’t you understand? This is exactly how you were when we first fell in love. Remember? Well, other than…” His fingers strayed to her wings. He’d touched other fairies’ wings while handling them over the years, but never with such intention. The little appendages unfurled, coaxed by the gentle contact. “I love you however you are.”
Finally, she looked at him fully. Even in the darkness, the smile on her face made his heart swell. Then her joy became uncertain as she glanced him up and down. “What on earth are you wearing?” she asked.
He chuckled sheepishly, too embarrassed to look down. A t-shirt and jeans—that’s what his strange attire was called. “I had to blend in.”
She giggled—a sound that made him want to melt with joy. “With a face like yours, there’s no blending in no matter what you wear.”
Such a flirt, even now.
Too relieved for words, he caved into the urge to embrace her. She nuzzled against the fabric of his t-shirt. They’d found each other. Everything had to be alright.

Healing Pools
Tumblr media
Bridgehid Masterlist [start from the beginning?]
@jj-pines @karaboutmyart @lerenee
“Calvin said he and Indigo went to the forge.”
“Where is the forge?”
“Down that hallway it the 12th door on the left.”
“Rowan!”
They marched down the hall with their friends following a bit behind, “Rowan, are you really sure that this is a good idea?” Elias asked.
The group of teens had found their way into the college from the festival—Rowan on the hunt for Indigo to get answers on the lying and what happened in the past.
“Indigo been lying to me this whole time!” they scoffed, “I don’t care if this a good idea, I need her to tell me the truth!”
They continued to the forge, found the door, and barreled through it, making Calvin jump at his workstation. The forge looked very much like a standard blacksmith forge with barrels of scraps, and tools. And weapons, specifically epées and a large onyx scythe hanging on the walls. Indigo sat beside Calvin in his large office chair now looking at the door since teens entered. “Rowan, what’s wrong?” she asked, all crunched up in the chair.
“You… You’ve been lying to me!”
She is silent, her eyes widen, and she stands, “W-what do you mean?!”
“You know what happened to my memories!” they yelled.
“What?!”
“You kept what happened from me this whole time!”
Indigo was flustered, combing her fingers through her hair, her shaking as she looked at everyone in from of her erratically, “I’ll know is that Esma was murdered that night then, Duke—”
“DUKE HAD YOU AND YOUR MAGES TAKE AWAY MY MEMORIES OF THAT NIGHT!”
The archmage froze, “I…” she crooked.
“BUT YOU AND MAGES FUCKED UP AND LEFT ME WITH NO MEMORIES AT ALL!”
“I didn’t know—”
“BULLSHIT! YOU’VE TRYING TO MAKE UP FOR PAST SEVEN YEARS, MAKING UP ME NOT REMEMBERING MY OWN PARENTS WITH STUPID GIFTS AND THE PROMISE OF HAPPINESS,” Rowan screamed.
“I-I…”
“YOU RUIN MY LIFE! AND YOU’VE KNOWN THIS WHOLE TIME! YOU’VE LIED TO MY FACE FOR WHAT?!”
“I DIDN’T KNOW,” Indigo screamed, her hands over her heart, “THE ONLY THING I KNEW WAS ESMA WAS SHOT!”
The room is silent again, she sounds genuine, her eyes full of tears, she heaved, “I didn’t even know that when it happened! I found that out later.” She exhaled unsteadily, “Duke told Sloan and I, she had died when the creatures from the tower came out that night! Then he said you saw something, and he didn’t want you to live with the memory of it! He had the mages join him in some kind of spellcasting to lock away your memories, but I did not participate. I assumed it worked as it should have and went with what Duke said to do regarding your well-being.”
Rowan only stared, with an anger-infused scowl that made Indigo’s skin feel like it was burning, “So you just listened to this guy you’ve never trusted?!?”
“I wasn’t any position at the time to not trust him!”
“I don’t like that answer,” Rowan huffed before turning to head for the door.
They didn’t want to look at her anymore, so they left the forge with their friends following behind them, while Indigo collapsed to the floor and began to wail. The mage could be heard through the walls as they all walked away, hiding in the school’s enormous media room.
They all sat in silence as it continued to grow late into the evening until Nemo began playing the piano softly. Georgia sat next to Rowan on the floor their arms linked together with the young seer’s head on their left shoulder, Elias paced, and Maverick had left after a while to go to the infirmary Calvin needed some help.
“You can stay with me tonight if you want Rowan,” Georgia mentioned, softly, “I think I still have some of your clothes, so you don’t have to go to Indigo and Calvin’s.”
Rowan only nodded, seeing Maverick, through the large windows looking out into the hallway. He was coming back, fidgeting with his hands, before he entered, “Indigo wants to seeing you in the infirmary.”
“I don’t want to talk her,” Rowan sneered as Nemo stopped playing the piano and Elias stopped pacing.
“She said she could fix this,” he replied.
“Can we really trust her,” Nemo scoffed, “she has been lying this whole time.”
“Wait she sounded genuine,” Georgia muttered sheepishly before receiving questioning glances, “I mean, yes, she has lied and maybe she didn’t have any good reason to lie, but she not a monster!”
“She certainly acts like one,” Elias commented.
“If she can fix it, is it not worth just hearing her out,” Georgia posed.
There was a moment of thought before Rowan sighed, “Fine.”
The group of teenagers headed to the infirmary, entering the quiet sanatorium in the middle of the evening, only a few homeopaths, including Casper, doing their daily tasks, and checking on the few patients they did have. Indigo stepped out of Calvin’s office, red in the face physically disheveled, and emotionally drained.
“Rowan, I am sorry. I—”
“Just tell me how you are going to fix this,” Rowan sighed, folding their arms in front of their cheats.
Indigo cleared her throat, “right, I wish to return your memories to you.” Rowan attempted to hide their shock, but failed, “I’ve looked into a possible reverse, I believe with we use the healing pools we can use magic along with Georgia’s seeing abilities, your memories will return.”
“Do you really think I could help,” Georgia asked, “I may be able to see the past, but I can’t see Rowan’s… sorry.”
“That’s why we will do it in the healing pool with the assistance of magic,” the archmage replied, “I understand I am not the most trustworthy at the moment, but I have faith that this will work.”
The is a moment of silence, “Rowan, I want to make this right! I want to help you and make up for my past negligence! I’m on your side! I thought by keep the things that I didn’t have the answers to from you it would make things easier when I found out the answers, because I knew everything that happens, I would have the answers to all of your questions. By the Goddess I just wanted to make things right… and I allows my emotions to get in the way.”
“Alright,” Rowan croaked, “but first you tell me everything you know even if you don’t have the answers.”
Indigo nodded, taking Rowan into Calvin's office. Explaining how she found out Esma had been shot, what happened with them and the orphanage how she didn’t speak up fast enough to have Rowan in her care from the start, and how that night Calvin had also been attacked so -even though it is not an excuse- the mage was not thinking straight the night Esma died. They ended the conversation in tears, ready to mistake the past mistakes made.
When Rowan collected themself, they followed Indigo and the others down to the healing pools under the infirmary. Changing into what could be described as a 3-piece pajama set in a vintage vouge green color, in a pristine pure color bathroom. They stared at themself in the mirror, an unbelievably disheveled person staring back. They looked like a mess with wet faces, red eyes, and messy unkept braids, they forcefully took them out before leaving the small bathroom.
They entered an opulent and large indoor pool, one of four under the infirmary. The room smelled heavily of healing herbs and oils, all the walls painted in a pastel rainbow of colors from the lights in the ceiling, the water in the large pool crystal clear, seeming both shallow and deep all at once, along with beautiful soft sounds of fae bouncing and echoing of the walls.
“Maverick and Elias, two will be at their sides, Georgia you’ll be at their head, I at their feet,” Indigo informed softly.
“What about me?” Nemo asked.
“You will guard the door.”
“Do you really think…”
“I have no suspicions that Duke will make attempts to interfere, but that doesn’t mean I am right,” Indigo replied, “I ask you because I know if he comes you can handle it. You are Sloan’s apprentice after all.”
Nemo nodded, holding in any reaction to her compliment before leaving the pool room and standing attention at the door. Indigo looked to Rowan who was now at her side, an empathic glance across her brow.
“This will work,” she cooed, “I promise.”
Rowan nodded before descending the steps into the large pool. The water is warm, like a bath, smelling more of medical herbs than outside of the water. Water shifts as Elias, Maverick, Georgia, and Indigo get in behind them.
“Imagine if we were wearing socks,” Georgia commented with a giggle.
“No, dear Goddess,” Elias cringed.
The group is in shallow water as everyone gets into place, with Rowan looking to Indigo for instructions, “lay on you back and float,” the mage instructed.
Rowan nodded, following her command, soaked in the water while staring at mural painted ceiling of some ornate piece from the romantism period art, “My dad can’t float,” Georgia stated, earning glances from her friends and teachers, “sorry, I’m nervous.”
“Georgia,” Indigo pronounced, making the young girl straighten her back, “do you not from a long line of great seers.”
“I mean yeah—”
“You are the first seer in centuries to be able to see a person past rather then their future! You are more powerful than you realize, Soleil!”
Sun, it would be an odd nickname for anyone, but Georgia, “okay,” she breathed, “I’m going to do this!”
“Preferably, like now. My ears are full of water, and I hate it,” Rowan mentioned.
“Sorry, sorry,” Georgia giggled.
“Okay, Georgia, place your hands out palms up,” Indigo instructed, to which the seer followed her direction, “now repeat after me.”
Georgia nodded before Indigo began chanting some kind of incantations that the mage in training soon repeated. It wasn’t long until Indigo and Georgia’s voices began to collide in Rowan’s ears, so much so, that it became like white noise mixed with the sound of the water in the healing pool. They had closed their eyes so as not to awkwardly look at Elias and Maverick or blind themself while staring into the overhead lights. However, the world around them was no longer dark, but instead white covered in fog, longer smelling of healing herbs rather than crushed cherries and chia milk. It feels like Rowan is lying in a puddle after a large rainstorm.
“Hey, kiddo, are you going to just lay there or come and see us?” The voice is unfamiliar yet familiar at the same time, it’s kind yet husky, croaky even, sounding, a man’s voice.
Rowan raised but looked around trying to find the source, “to your left, baby,” it’s a woman's voice now, soft almost brittle with a slight Irish accent, but obviously in a caring tone, that valley of familiar yet not. They whipped their left.
Face people, a man and woman, a few paces away from them. The man is paler than the woman, but both of fair skin and pink hair, yet the man’s hair is much lighter and short, almost white in some places, while his female counterpart’s hair looks almost red and long done in a bun, low at the base of her skull. Their eyes, are both, orange shades, yet the man looks like they are the color of a marigold, while his eyes are permanently bloodshot the woman has many beauty marks across her face.
There is something in Rowan, that tell them to get up, something that tells them to go before them, yet that stay sat in a puddle of water.
“Momma?!”
Their on feet, running from their little puddle, into the arms of their parents hugging both of them for the first time in over a decade. Even if it wasn’t real, it felt like home.
“You used to be so tiny,” Jacob cooed, petting their hair as they cried into his chest, “Goddess, you look so much like me. Esma, baby, they look like me!”
“I know, Jacob, I’ve always known,” She croaked softly, placing a hand on Rowan’s cheek, trying to wipe away their tears, “but we have to focus.”
Jacob nodded, rubbing Rowan’s back, “come straighten up, baby marigold, you gotta get through this.”
“Is this because of what Indigo and Georgia are doing?” Rowan asked, hiccupping.
Esma and Jacob nodded, “We are like sprits in your subconscious, your gate openers for the journey you want to go on,” Esma explained, “you want to remember what happened that night, right?”
It became Rowan’s turn to nod. “Are you sure, kiddo?” Jacob asked, “it is all what you really want to see?”
“I want to remember everything,” they answered, “no matter how gross, horrible, or painful, I have to know! I haven’t remembered you both for the past seven years, my life started at age nine! I need to know!”
“You can’t go back once we leave,” Esma reiterated.
“I understand that, and that doesn’t change anything! My answer is yes, I have to do this!”
Esma and Jacob nodded again, “can I ask something first?” Rowan asked, “Before this is over, and I go back and never see you again.”
“Of course, baby,” Esma cooed.
“Why the marigolds?”
Jacob chuckled, “there are your mother’s birth flower.”
“and my favorite flower,” she added.
Rowan giggled, crying once again, “and the color of your father’s eyes.”
“Yes, my beautiful bloodshot eyes,” he joked.
Esma touched the necklace around Rowan’s neck, “I’m glad this made its way to you.”
“Can I have one last hug,” Rowan hiccupped.
Jacob and Esma involved them in a hug, as the scent in the air shifted from the crusted cherries and chai milk back to the healing herbs. “We will love you, Rowan.” Was the last thing they heard before the white skies and fog disappeared back to pitch-black nothingness.

So far the aus I create for my yuu's are:
Zoriana/Yuu:
Tumblr media
Great grandchild of Chernabog
They/Them/She
The Morning Star princess
Had no idea they come from a royal background until their forehead grow in more pain, resulting in their horns growing back
Book 2 of Decendant of Chernabog in progress
Book 1 is already complete (on wattpad)
Their home country, Empire of Fantasia, was once part of Twisted Wonderland world continant but had to leave because of the demons were planning to overthrow the empire and other kingdoms
It was their decision to be the empire's princess, learning that their mother wanted a daughter to raise
Their older brother, Prince Azrael, takes more of Chernabog's inspiration
In the next book, Zoriana's grandfather, the current emperor, announced a grand party for their return, so they selected a few of their classmates as their country is not "normal" and consider "dangerous" as there are powerful races living there. Either for fun or their little revenge for all the mess they have to clean up for them. It's going to be a fun ride for the nrc students.
Esmeralda (Former Mc from the Obey Me fandom)
Tumblr media
Was once known as "Mc" in the Obey Me World but got assassinated
Was one of few witches that were strong during the Dark Ages
If it weren't for her death, they would end up in a relationship with Solomon instead of any of the seven brothers
Died at the age of 455
Reborn back to a young teenager, 15
Was born with magic, resulting in having emerald eyes
Hated demons for killing their families but only got along with Diavolo and Barbatos
Diavolo took Esme in his care as he felt responsible for what happened
Over time, Esme forgives Diavolo and sees him as a father figure
To make out for an apology, Esme asked for Diavolo to teach her about ancient history and magic as she showed signs of having magic
When Diavolo heard about Esme death, he then picked up their casket to where her original home was for proper resting
The reason why Esma(female) Esmé (GN) and Isme (male) can't go back to their original world was to start a brand new life... a life where they can find true love (?)
Esmé (gender neutral yuu):
Tumblr media
The more canon Yuu
One out of three didn't have to go too much trauma
Gets to have their old friend back and go thr the canon events together
No love interest... yet or not
Having no magic means no emerald eye color, but pure white eye color
With Mizuki by their side, the dorm got more upgrade and more lively
Rollo, Fellow, and Gidel join the dorm. Rollo because there is no way he got away with it, so his headmage send him to NRC as his punishment. Poor Rollo taught he'll be alright, and then there's Mizuki, the avatar of Envy. With Fellow & Gidel, in my headcanon, they appear again for the next NRC Halloween event bc Esmé need the wood puppets as guards. Big brain right there! They ask and ask if the two wanted to study here and finally said yes, well, Gidel nodded yes.
Esma (female Yuu):
Tumblr media
Goes through some canon events
Their magic coming back with their white eyes slowly turning green
Closely resemble Esmeralda in the Hunchback of Notre Dame
Would also take another Disney character reference later
Also means their love interest is the twst version of Phoebus
Will meet the Great Sevens
Regains their memories from their previous life
Percival Aelius:
Twst version of Phoebus
Was once noble bell college student but transferred to rsa. Tho he wanted to transfer to nrc, but the register was full.
Meet Esma at the ceremony from the distance only to the official meeting when both of them were selected to be representatives for the Grand Event
In the end, Percival loves Esma even in her overblot form
Isme (male Yuu):
Tumblr media
Raise and meet the Great Sevens when they were an toddler
Unlike the other G7 Yuu's, Isme lived in a decent environment, but there were harsh moments he had to face on which leave big scars
Didn't know how they came to be as they don't recall some of their childhood memories
Promise the great sevens to return their physical forms as they were educated and trained by them
Transport to Twisted Wonderland, learning that their guardians were historic figures, maybe there was a chance to find a way to bring them back
Two sides, one is their "villain" persona as they act sly, silly, and professional. Given the fact they have to play as a magicless human so it work out well with their amazing acting. The second one is their normal self but can't show his true colors in order to hide the fact they are the vessel of the great sevens
Isme can be smart, but when it comes to more romance, they are clueless
Lucian Mackinley: RSA version of Yuu
Love interest of Isme
I had a difficult idea of what Disney character. Until, I recently thought of him being a twst version of the wishing star as Lucian is born like a star, literally
Raise by the Noble Sevens (Disney heroes)
Have a direbeast cat, Felicia
Had trouble making friends as it tends to be unapproachable or ignores their voices
And my favorite and upcoming: The House of Mouse angst scenario:
Set around in the late 2020 as Twisted Wonderland came out on March 2020. A "Yuu" worker, Esma, suddenly disappeared, and no one knows what happened to her. Two years later, a different "Yuu" came to the House of Mouse to work until they found what seemed to be an old photo of the employees with the previous "Yuu". Later on, the Halloween episode came, but the villains weren't the only ones to make an entrance.

Bracket E Round 1
Poll 23
Esma Sayın (@frutigermetro) vs. Vera F. (@creativeidealist)
301. Esma Sayın [sigh-in, not saying] (@frutigermetro)
she/her
Esma Sayin is a teenage girl with no super-powers (in a world where everyone around her has super-powers) but instead a big hammer and perhaps too much persistence. She’s interning with some other teenagers for a big organisation called Beast Control.
Esma knows how to wield her charm, and she’s good at strategizing on the fly, but she can be quite insensitive and (often willingly, sometimes unwillingly) oblivious outside of her immediate goals. On the outside she is silly, perhaps a bit goofy, on the inside she possesses a deep sadness and regret, and on the inside of that is even more silliness but a different kind. She’s learning to listen to her peers more, and eventually she’ll catch onto the fact that the people she admires aren’t everything. Eventually.
I’ve somehow made her the blorbo of everyone I mention her to. I’ve drawn her on various pen testing pads and on a very graffitied table in my high school once and then also on a whiteboard at a uni’s animation department once as well. I am making an extended propaganda video about her at this very minute (which may be uploaded by the time this is released). Vote for a white girl squirking on the beat. Vote for a girl who may have some issues. Vote Esma.
Esma is a pale, scrawny teenage girl with curly dark brown hair tied into a braid. She has dark brown eyes (sometimes I draw them purple but they're meant to be brown!). Normally she wears a dark cyan set of tracksuit pants and a shirt, boots, and a pale purple jacket with a right sleeve repaired using medium purple, patterned fabric. She has a big hammer and it's pretty epic.
302. Vera F. (@creativeidealist)
She/Her
She's Hot, Fashionable, Artsy, Passionate, and a Nervous wreck of a gal with a love of burning stuff, not to mention she's Pan! You may think she's just some run-of-the-mill Undertale OC, but I assure you she has grown to be so much more than a "Sans but a different color" over the years. I know, There's not a lot to go off off her, But think about it! she's up for interpretation! So what are you waiting for?

Lost
“Esma?”
“Yeah?” She turned, sharp jaw clenched pensively.
“Ne- nevermind,” he dropped his gaze, watching a raindrop fall from his nose to between his boots. Galen follows after her when he hears the sharp twist of Esma’s boots in the wet gravel.
Her most recent abode isn’t much further, luckily. Galen can feel the heat hit him when Esma opens the door, hurrying in to escape the cold dampness of the rain. He carefully removes his shoes by the door, feeling Esma’s presence doing the same before she moves away. He takes another moment to fully unlace his boots before he follows, tugging off his soaked cloak.
The floorboards creak lightly under his feet, betraying his position as he steps into the sitting room. Esma looks up from where she’s stoking the fire. The way he swallows feels too loud in his ears as he takes a few steps forward.
 She moves to the kitchen before he gets within three steps of her. Galen closes his eyes at the phantom sword in his chest. He carefully hangs his cloak by the fire to dry, and sits on the floor near it. Perhaps a bit too closely, the fire almost burns on his skin. He doesn’t move.
Galen hears the way Esma deliberately creaks a board as she walks away. He pretends he didn’t feel her presence as she left his tea just within reach, opting to simply turn and pick up the mug with a hum of thanks. The tea is his favorite, rosemary and mint.
He’s careful to not watch her settle into an armchair, tucking her feet up against the armrest. His fingers still feel cold despite the way the fire pushes feeling back into his fingertips, and while the tea is nice it does nothing to parse the lump in his throat. He sets his tea down.
He can feel Esma’s eyes on him. He closes his and tilts his head back, leaning back until the fire truly begins to burn, until he catches the slight change in her breathing. He opens his eyes and leans forward, meeting her eyes.
“What happened to you Galen?” her expression is the most open it’s been since he’s seen her again, some mixture of confusion and grief. He isn’t sure what his own expression is, isn’t sure he wants to know. He doesn't know how to answer the question either. Too much has happened since she left and to be honest he doesn’t quite know how he even ended up here.
Whatever expression he has must be enough, he watches the confusion clear and the grief redouble and somewhere in it all he finds his voice again.
“Could you hold me? Please?”
Esma crashes into him, simultaneously pulling him from the fire and flooding him with warmth. He shivers, clutching the back of her shirt, and feels her pull him a bit firmer against her. His eyes sting, he tastes salt, and in her arms it finally feels like home.
~~~~~~
@creativepromptfills thank you for putting out prompts! This one in particular inspired me to pick up the pen again, hope you enjoy!
Twisted Tales: Welcome to the Villains World
Chapter 1: Strange Awakings
Tumblr media
To say that it was Elizabeth’s first time in a coffin… it would be a complete lie.
The first thing she saw was nothing. Just darkness. Pure and utter pitch black darkness encased her body. Groaning, she shifted and then froze when she felt the smooth wood underneath her finger tips. She felt around and from what she could feel she concluded that she was definitely inside of a coffin.
For a moment she thought this was a prank. A prank that the inhabitants of her home frequently played on her. More specifically, Phineas, Ezra and Gus who loved to play this little prank on her.
She rolled her eyes, only guessing that this was the case and pushed against the door of the coffin. Her eyes widened when the door didn’t budge. The coffin door would always be unlocked, her ghosts wouldn’t be that cruel to do something like that to her.
Elizabeth fell back against the wood and was preparing to kick it open to the best of her ability, her coffin started to rattle, “What the?” She whispered in confusion.
She blinked in surprise when she heard a voice coming from the outside of the coffin. It was a little gravely and scratchy but it was also higher pitched and honestly sounded adorable, “I better hurry up and find that uniform before someone spots me…”
Elizabeth had never heard of the voice before. She knew every single ghost that walked her grounds, no one had a voice like that.
“Urgggh… This lid weighs a ton! Try this on for size! Mya-ha!” The voice exclaimed and suddenly blue flames ignited the coffin.
“F-fire?! What the hell?” Elizabeth screamed and launched herself at the lid of the coffin. Her entire body went translucent as she kicked off from the wood under her.
“Now to grab the goods… Nyahhh!” A small gray cat-like creature with a little black and white striped bow and bright blue flames dancing in his cat-like ears and the same colored blue eyes screamed as Elizabeth’s translucent body flew out, more like through the coffin and stumbled onto her feet.
“H-how did you do that?! You ain’t supposed to be awake either!” The creature exclaimed.
Elizabeth found her footing, her body turning back to normal and stared at the small creature in question, “What the hell are you?” She looked around and her jaw dropped at the massive number of floating coffins in this one single room she woke up in.
“Holy shit. There must be the same amount of coffins that the mausoleum has. Never saw floating ones though.” Elizabeth stares in wonder at the beautiful, ornate coffins.
More banging filled the room, coming from six other coffins.
“Ahh!” One coffin opened right next to the now semi charred one that Elizabeth floated out of. With a scream, another person started to fall out of the coffin.
Elizabeth’s eyes widened as she recognized the person immediately. “Esma!” Elizabeth thrusted her hand out, her teal eyes glowing along the veins in her hands glowing the same color and with the guided motions of her hand, Esma was gently set on her feet.
Esma shuddered out a breath and bowed her head to her friend, “Thanks Elizabeth… woah, what are you wearing?”
“I could say the same for you.” Elizabeth replied, letting her hands fall and the glowing ceased. Both girls were wearing beautiful dark purple and black robes with golden embroidery, black fitted pants with small heeled boots sharing the same colors. Both had their hoods up, completely hiding their hair and a good portion of the faces.
A bang rang out the room, louder than the others and a third person jumped down from their floating coffin, holding her laser flintlock. The person sighed when they saw the others in the room, “Thank god. We’re not dreaming are we?”
The flintlock disappeared from their hand in a flash of golden light, using said weapon to blast their way out of the coffin they were in.
Esma smiled at the person, “Jamie. I don’t think we are.”
Jamie frowned, “Seems dream-like to me.” She says, walking over to her two other friends. Her friends blinked in surprise as a floating blob of pink with big eyes flew out of the hood of Jamie’s robs.
“Morph got here too?” Elizabeth asked.
Jamie shrugged and opened her palm for Morph to place himself on. He babbled happily and rubbed himself against Jamie’s fingers, happy to be with his owner, “I guess. Morph, do you know how we got here?”
Morph shook his head and acted out that he was asleep just like Jamie was. “Huh, nope. He has no idea.”
Two more coffins opened and the two occupants landed gracefully on their feet. Elizabeth raised a brow, “Kim? Mira?”
Both said girls looked at the group and then at each other, “Okay is this some elaborate prank done by the Hitchhiking Ghosts?” Kim asked, crossing her arms.
Elizabeth shook her head, “I don’t think so. They are good at what they do, but I don’t think they could ever go this far.”
“Ahh!” The last two coffins opened and the last two girls were way less than graceful, tumbling out of the coffins that were thankfully not that high in the air.
Jamie winced and jogged over to her two other friends, “Ally, Maxine. You two okay?”
Ally giggled a little, taking Jamie’s helping hand, “Oh yeah, I’ve fallen from places higher than that and came out unscathed. Maxine?”
Maxine sprang to her feet and bounced on her toes, “That was fun. Can I do it again?” She looked back up at the coffin, hoping to try falling out of it again.
“No.” The entire group of girls groaned in unison at Maxine.
Maxine frowned and stopped bouncing in her place, “Boo.” She mumbled.
“Oh-ho! You got a lotta nerve ignoring me, humans!” The cat-like creature screamed at the group.
Maxine’s eyes widened and squeaked, “What an adorable kitty! He kind of reminds me of Thackery.”
The cat creature let out a noise, offended that he possibly was compared to a cat, “I’m not a cat! The name’s Grim. Believe me, you won’t forget it!”
Grim folded his arms and glared at the group, “Now, one of you gimme your uniform, and be quick about it!”
The girls all exchanged a look, suddenly uneased, not believing what this creature named Grim was saying. Even if one of the girls gave him the uniform, he would be swimming in it.
“‘Cause if you don’t… you’re gonna regret it!” Grim exclaimed, waving his arms, the same blue flames that Elizabeth experienced, surrounded them for a split second. Like a warning.
The girls let out their own noises of shock, “Getting roasted by a kitty! We gotta be dreaming!” Maxine exclaimed.
Ally shook her head, “We are totally not dreaming. Those flames felt way too real.”
Grim scowled, “Well keep dreamin’, cause I ain’t no kitty!” He shot out even more flames at the group and that was their cue to get the hell out of there.
“Run!” Esma shouted, taking the lead and slamming her body against the doors of the room they were in, and flung them open with a loud bang.
The other girls quickly followed, “Seriously?! That’s something you see down in the Underworld!” Elizabeth announced to the group as they ran throughout the building they found themselves in.
They exited said building, their heels clacking loudly against the cobblestone underneath their feet as they ran through what they all could only guess was the courtyard.
“Let’s try there!” Mira pointed to another building just a little ahead of them. The group agreed with Mira, and all ran into the building, closing the doors behind them and leaning against the walls or against each other to catch their breath.
“Woah.” Ally whispered when she finally catched her breath.
The group returned to breathing normally and lightly pushed off each other or the wall, stepping deeper into the room in awe. Books were floating or even flying through the large, ceiling high bookshelves. Rows upon rows of books filled the room.
“Gotta be the library.” Mira guessed and smiled when she had to duck an oncoming flying book, putting itself back in its rightful spot.
Elizabeth grinned when a few books flew past her as well, almost fluttering at her in greeting. “Kind of reminds me of home.” Her mansion had a huge library that definitely competed with this place, though with more cobwebs and ghosts wandering about.
Ally looked around, eyes wide in awe. “Man, I wish the books in Halloween Town could fly.” The place just reminded her of home in Halloween Town, a library that her and her father spent days reading in. Though unfortunately, the books didn’t fly.
“Amazing.” Kim mumbled out before grabbing a book mid-flight, struggling with it a little, to read the title, “ Species of the Coral Sea . Huh?” The book flew out of her hands, obviously not being plucked mid-flight.
Each one of them had smiles on their faces. Obviously magic had a mind of its own wherever they ended up. In a weird way it was comforting.
Jamie chuckled as Morph ‘ohed’ at the books. His eyes going comedicaly wide at the new environment. He started to dart ahead but Jamie caught him before he could stray from the group. “Hold it, buddy. I get it’s cool but we don’t know what this place is.”
Morph made some noises, obviously upset that he couldn’t explore but didn’t protest against Jamie’s words.
And their smiles disappeared as a wall of blue fire roared around them in warning and dissipating as quickly as it appeared.
A chorus of screams and a few curses rang throughout the library as the girls avoided the fire. Morph even screamed, flying into one of the pockets of Jamie’s robes, peeking over the edge.
They turned and saw Grim, smirking with his hands on his hips… or what the girls could assume was his hips, “Foolish humans! Did you really think you could slip away from ME?”
“Mean kitty.” Maxine whispered under her breath with a small pout. Kim nodded in agreement, her eyes glowing bright blue, her fingers twitching, preparing if Grim decided to attack the group again.
“Now, unless you wanna get burned to a crisp, take off that-” A whip snapped, wrapping around Grim, stopping him mid-sentence, “Me-YEOW! That hurt! What gives?”
Kim blinked, her eyes stopped glowing, but still remained her bright blue color. The group watched on as a man dressed from head to toe in black, dark blues and purples, almost dressed in a formal tuxedo with raven feathers adorning his cape. Pale skin, a crow mask hid half of his face and his eyes were seemingly glowing yellow and no pupil was visible. A top hat on his head with the motif of mirrors and keys incorporated in his entire outfit.
He glared at Grim as he lifted him wrapped in his whip. “Consider it tough love.” He declared.
Esma raised a brow at the man. Who the hell just carries a whip around? Not really the best way to discipline anyone. Let alone a cat-like beast trying to attack them.
The man’s glare went away and smiled at the group, “Ah, I found you at last. Splendid, I trust you seven are this year’s new students?”
The girls looked at each other, not really understanding what this man was talking about. School? As far as they were concerned, they were all hanging out at Elizabeth’s mansion for a sleepover. Then… Well, they couldn’t remember anything past a carriage rolling up to the mansion's gate.
“My, were you lot ever eager to make your debut.” He narrowed his gaze, “And bringing a poorly trained familiar with you? That is a clear violation of the school’s rules.”
“Um, sir, he’s not-” Elizabeth was cut off when Grim interrupted her.
“As if I’d serve some lowly humans! Now lemme go!” Grim struggled in his hold, clearly more than upset by the crow-man’s accusations.
The crow-man sighs, “Yes, yes. Rebellious familiars always say that. Do be quiet for a bit, won’t you?” He lifts Grim into his arm and places a hand over Grim’s mouth to prevent him from speaking any farther.
Ally’s eye twitches at the treatment of Grim. Yes, he was causing trouble, but this was… unsettling to say.
“Dear me. Of all the students I’ve dealt with, you’re the first with the temerity enough to open their own gate and step out of it.” He ignores the confused stares from the girls who had no idea what this bird-man was saying.
“Whoa, hold on, rewind.” Mira spoke up, waving her hands, “Those coffins we fell out of were portals?” Mira questioned. She knew about portals; fortunately, she used them often to go back and forth from her home on the mortal plane and to Coventry.
“Huh, never thought of using coffins before.” Ally mumbled. Portals were common enough, but coffins were certainly a new way to go about them. Maybe if they walked back into them, they could get back home?
It wouldn’t be much different than her and her dad using mausoleums to get to the mortal plane like Mira and back to Halloween Town. Of course doorways were a thing, like what her friend Splendora uses to get to her own home. Or even other forms of portals like Jamie used.
Apparently, crow-man had no interest in listening to either of them, “Does the very notion of patience elude you all? No matter. Your orientation has already begun. Let us return to the Mirror Chamber.”
“Orientation? What like, student orientation?” Esma questioned, tilting her head. They were already in school. If this really was a school, it gave off cult vibes more than anything.
“You awakened in a room full of gates, did you not? All of the students here at campus arrived by passing through such gates.” He explained.
Esma stared unamused by him, so yeah, he basically answered Mira’s previous question.
Mira herself was irked by him, sighing and rubbing her temple.
The crow-man continued, “Although typically the students have enough restraint to wait until I open them before waking up.”
Elizabeth crossed her arms, “Yeah, well, waking up to someone trying to burn me to a crisp is quite motivating.”
“Not to mention, easy to shoot out of.” Jamie mentioned. She hated confined spaces, guns always helped.
The girls hummed and murmured, each not wanting to stay in such a confined space with no recollection on how they got there.
The man was baffled at the group. They just left their coffins without anything from him. He shook his head, not wanting to fully address their ways of leaving the coffins, “The design is intended to symbolize a parting with your former world, and a rebirth into a new one.”
Maxine’s heart dropped, “P-parting?” What did that really mean? Could they not get back to their homes? They should be able to have a choice in this matter. They didn’t choose to come here.
“But now is not the time for such prattle.” He continued, “You’ve got a student orientation to attend! Go on, now. Make haste.” He waved them along, gesturing for them to follow him out of the library.
Jamie huffed, “Look, we aren’t going anywhere until you tell us where we are and who the hell you are.” She just wants a straight answer from this guy.
He tilted his head at the group, “Hm? Have you not fully regained consciousness? The timespace teleportation must have addled your memories…”
Jamie furrowed her brows, “Timespace?...” Did the gates work like her portkey? Her eyes widened at the thought and she quickly patted down her pockets, quietly apologizing to Morph as she searched for the one item she always makes sure she has on her person. She sighed in relief once she felt a metal, spherical object in her other pocket.
“Well, these things happen, I suppose. I shall explain it to you while we walk. Truly, my magnanimity is boundless.” He smiled, praising himself despite not fully answering Jamie’s question.
Unfortunately, the girls, without much knowledge on where they were, they kind of had no choice but to follow this strange man. Defeated, the girls follow him out of the library and through what they could only guess is a courtyard. Apple trees grew everywhere, a well was placed in the middle that looked oddly familiar to a few of them.
“This is Night Raven College.” Well, that answered half of Jamie’s question.
“It is an institution for students the world over who demonstrate a rare aptitude for magic. It is the most prestigious of its sort in all of Twisted Wonderland.” He explained.
They had to admit, the college was impressive, beautiful even. Some of the girls were used to the gothic architecture while others weren’t used to the castle life.
“And I am Dire Crowley.”
“Thank fuck, we got a name.” Jamie sighed and Maxine giggled at her friend.
Crowley gave Jamie a pointed look before continuing, “Having been entrusted with its care by the chairman, I serve as headmage.”
Esma speaks up, “Magic?” It wasn’t that none of them heard about magic. Hell, they lived in worlds full of magic and had magic themselves. Each one of them is special and unique to themselves.
Crowley nodded, “Only those who the Dark Mirror perceives as having a talent for magic are admitted to the college.”
Maxine hummed at his words. Maybe that explained why they ended up at Night Raven, hell in Twisted Wonderland altogether?
“Those who are selected are summoned to the campus through those “gates”, which can appear anywhere. A black carriage bearing one such gate should have come to meet you.” Crowley explained.
Flashes of multiple carriages showing up at Elizabeth’s mansion flashed in the girls' heads. But… none of them had heard of Twisted Wonderland or Night Raven College. And did he say Dark Mirror?
“The black carriage serves to receive a student chosen by the Dark Mirror. It too bears a gate that connects to this campus. And as you know, sending a carriage to meet someone on a special day is a time-honored tradition.”
Silence hung over the group. “So these carriages basically dragged us here against our will?” Maxine asked. They never asked for this.
Grim started making noises of protest from Crowley’s hold. Seriously, Maxine was starting to think that this treatment of the poor cat was unnecessary.
Crowley ignored Grim’s noises of protest, “Now, let us attend to your orientation.”
The girls all shared a look before following Crowley. What did they get themselves into now?
The Night Cove
Daniel considered it their cove. His and Esmae’s, even if she loved it more than him. In their months together, they had explored up and down the shore near the castle. This inlet, with its massive rocky overhang and calm waters, was Esmae’s favorite.
Daniel might have loved it more if not for the black rocks that jutted above and below the surface. He’d gotten better at not scraping himself, but nighttime visits always ended in a few mishaps. He could already feel the sting of a few cuts.
Esmae, of course, had no trouble navigating the environment. Other than a few torches Daniel had lit up on the shore, she was the only source of light. Her magenta glow darted about in the water like living starlight.
Having found a relatively comfortable rock to lean against, Daniel observed with with stunning clarity as she made a beeline for him. Surfacing, she hefted something proudly over her head.
“What’ve you got now?” he asked softly.
A tiny orange starfish—well, tiny to him. It was nearly the size of her torso.
Bringing himself lower in the water, Daniel inched his palm closer for Esame to place the tiny creature in his hand. She appeared greatly entertained whenever he interacted with little things from her world.
He brushed the starfish with his fingertip, raising his eyebrows at the curious sensation of its arms unfurling calmly against his palm.
Esmae watched raptly, an endeared smile on her face. It’s very sweet, how gentle you are. I didn’t think humans were capable of that. Although she couldn’t speak to him above water, he memorized every word she graced him with when he joined her below the surface.
As she reached for the starfish to return it home, the sash around her upper body slipped a bit, revealing enough to make Daniel blush. She caught his expression and broke into a silent giggle. She adjusted the cloth and gave him a pointed look. Will you be alright after seeing all that skin, you poor thing?
Apparently, merpeople had a different idea of what body parts could be casually exposed. He never ordered Esmae to cover herself, but his flushed face and avoidant gaze were distractingly funny, according to her. He swore that sometimes she created a loose knot on purpose.
“Must you laugh at me every time?” he scoffed.
The grin on her face said it all. Her smooth skin brushed his palm as she took the starfish, prompting him to hold his breath. She was so soft—something he’d never been able to appreciate when he’d stupidly held her captive. Now, he felt unworthy of each bit of contact she gifted him with.
As she escorted the starfish away, she took the nearest source of light with her. As he began to turn in the direction of the shore, the water rippled in the firelight. He froze as something stirred beneath the surface—something that certainly wasn’t Esmae.
A gray fin broke through with near silence.
Daniel froze, his mind rejecting what he saw. A shark shouldn’t have been tempted to enter such shallow waters—yet there it was, heading straight for him. He snapped out of his stupor and jolted back with a noisy splash.
“Esmae,” he breathed, then raised his voice. “Esmae!”
His back hit one of the large rocks. He tried to shuffle to the side, looking around madly for Esmae’s glow while keeping track of the shark’s path. The scrapes on his arms and legs stung sharper than ever—had he drawn the beast right to their cove with his blood?
He shouted her name louder. The shark circled the rock, its fin dipping below and above the rippling water like a taunt. If he dared to pull away to escape, he had no chance of outmaneuvering the predator. Was this how Esmae felt when he’d found her trapped in the tidepool all those months ago?
Except this shark wasn’t overwhelmingly massive. Not to him. It could take a chunk of him, and he might survive. But Esmae… She’d be less than a mouthful to the creature.
As if the thought of that summoned her, a magenta glow bobbed into view beneath the clear water. A shout caught in Daniel’s throat.
Idiot! What was he thinking, shouting for her? He was drawing her right to her death.
“No!” he shouted. “Go back!”
But she drew closer. Daniel tensed, then lunged out to get her to safety. The shark darted around the rock and tossed its head toward his arm. He snatched himself back, breathing heavily.
Esmae paused. Her little, glowing form waved off Daniel flippantly. Then she approached the shark without an ounce of hesitation.
Daniel gaped as she swam alongside the beast. When the pair circled near, he swore he saw her little lips moving. He’d seen her play with fish before, but this was insane.
Before he could think to duck under the water to hear what she was saying, the shark swam off, exiting the cove calmly.
Relief came gradually. He couldn’t believe either of them were safe. Even when Esmae swam up to him, he didn’t take his eyes off the shark’s direction until Esmae nudged his abdomen insistently. He flinched at her touch and looked down to find her peering up at him with an amused expression. She was so close, his slowing heartbeat picked up speed again.
“W-what on earth was that?” he stammered. “You were speaking to it? What did it want? How did you make it leave?”
Her smile widened. At least she was entertained. She found his hand and gave his finger a downward tug. After another wary look at the open water, Daniel lowered himself under the surface, intent on getting an explanation from her.
She took one look at his wide-eyed expression and giggled. He hadn’t heard her musical little voice for hours. “Are you alright?” she asked rather sweetly. She got comfortable near his hand, weaving her lithe form through his fingers.
All he could do was shrug in response.
She giggled again. “That shark helps guard my people. It ensures other predators stay away. My father has a way of convincing certain beasts to be on our side.” She leaned her cheek on his knuckle. “It must have followed me. It came to make sure I was alright.”
Short on breath, Daniel surfaced briefly. “You were able to speak with it?” he asked, struck with more wonder than fear now.
“No,” she said when he ducked down again. “It’d be a bit like talking to… to a dog or a horse.” She enunciated the animals’ names strangely, as they were wholly foreign creatures to her until recently. “I was able to send it off. Though, it’s a good thing they can’t speak. Otherwise, it’d tell my father where I’ve been spending my days.”
She smirked conspiratorily at him. Daniel surfaced. It was rare she spoke of her people, least of all her father. Daniel knew for certain that her people wouldn’t be pleased if they discovered she had made contact with a human. Considering the awful two weeks he’d put her through when they met, Daniel could say little to defend humanity.
“I suppose it’s for the best we stay secretive,” he sighed. He gave another cursory glance at the water, relieved that he saw no more fins breaching the surface. He couldn’t shake how fantastically brave she was for putting herself between him and the beast. He peered down at her. “So—how can you tell the good sharks from the bad ones?”
There was a bit of a wild look in her eyes when he met her under the water again. She moved from his hand and tapped his nose teasingly. “I can’t. I suppose we just got lucky.”
OC-tober Day 1: Childhood
This is Queen Esma (Princess Esma, in this drawing) of the Elven Music Faeries (As opposed to the Human Music Faeries or the Elven Dark Faeries etc.).
From childhood into adulthood, Esma has kept her hair long, worn skirts and dresses whenever she could, and collected as much golden jewellery as possible. She is fierce, determined, and takes no nonsense from anyone.
Bridgehid Masterlist [Start from the Beginning?]
@jj-pines @karaboutmyart @lerenee
The college was dark and quiet, even seven years ago the building itself already felt ancient.
“Bridgehid College was to be built on the grounds of the Marquis Catacombs. One would need to find a way to seal the catacombs from the outside. The solution the builders came up with was an ornate castle with an ivory tower placed directly over the entrance to the catacombs— Oh my Goddess! This book is so historic, it’s painful!” Percy scoffed, as she read a passage from a history of Bridgehid College aloud.
She tossed the book onto her desk and reclined in her office chair, "Well if I don't find Indigo a proper birthday gift by November... she'll have yet another book."
Sighing she looked down at her cursed body under the soft light of the lamps in her office. Her legs had recently been replaced by tentacles, which she attempted to hide under a long black skirt.
"Fuck you, Kallias!” she huffed, resting her clenched fist against her cheek.
She looked out her office window and stared into the luscious courtyard, "Truly stunning... I wonder if I am allowed to hold class outside."
Staring out at the stars that twinkled over the rooftop gave her a brief sense of peace. A welcome distraction from her day to day troubles.
That was until there was a shriek that made her jump out of her seat, followed by something large flying by her window, "What the hell?!"
Percy rushed to the window, opening it without really thinking, looking around trying to find whatever flew past, but seeing nothing. When she closed and locked the window, she heard screaming.
"My Goddess, is the college falling apart?!" she gasped while slinking out of her office as the lights began to flicker.
She marched down the now dark hallways trying to find the source of the screaming, hearing eerie inhuman sounds as she moved down the long corridors.
"I've only been here six months and this shit is already getting weird," she cursed as she turned a corner, before freezing in place.
There was an undeterrable monster on top of a healer she had once thought of as untouchable, if not only because of his incredible strength than because of the woman he lays with. Underneath the strange monstrous creature’s tendrils he laid there in a pool of blood. This creature, no this monster, seemed to be like the ones from the horrible book she was just reading.
"VILE MONSTER!" Percy screamed in absolute horror, before muttering some Polish words and shooting lightning at the beast from her fingertips, electrocuting it which caused it to convulse on the floor next to Calvin before it ran away.
"Oh goddess, oh goddess, oh goddess!" Percy shrieked, running over to Calvin, and attempting to inspect his body, "If you die, I’ll lose her!"
"Please - Holy fuck!" she stared at three large gashes across his chest, "There is so much blood!"
He still had a pulse, which was good, but if he continued to lay on the floor like this, he wouldn’t have one for much longer!
"HELP! SOMEONE! PLEASE HELP! DEAR GODDESS, PLEASE!"
She hadn't screamed so loud in ages. It bounced and echoed off the stockades as she continued to scream and cry for help.
"PERCY?!”
It was Sloan's voice, she could recognize that voice anywhere, even with the current darkness of the college. He was down the hall, far enough away that she couldn’t even make out his silhouette.
"ARE YOU ALRIGHT?"
"CALVIN'S HURT! SO... SOME... SOME THING ATTACKED HIM. HE'S BLEEDING! I-I-I CAN'T STOP IT!"
Sloan quickly made his way over to her as soon he heard her say Calvin’s name. He had never heard Percy so loud, so emotional, so unintelligible, it terrified him to hear her like that. When he finally made it to the both of them, he was shocked to see Calvin on the floor, he too had always thought the healer was untouchable.
"Goddess," Sloan gasped, "Let... Let me pick him up, and we'll take him to the infirmary."
Percy nodded.
"You're going to have to help me, for a second," he spoke softly, attempting to keep things from becoming completely uncontrollable while standing on the left side of Calvin while Percy was on his right, "Pick up your side of him, so I can get a hold of him."
She nodded once again before following Sloan's directions, using all her strength to pick up the unconscious healer's right side, so her alchemist colleague could get a firm grip on his body.
They stained their clothes in his blood in their efforts to get Calvin in a better position to move him into the infirmary.
"Call Indigo!" Sloan ordered before quickly making his way down the hallway, getting to the infirmary as fast as he could.
Everything was happening so fast, and yet no one knew what was going on.
There were still some people in college, but they were only dealing with flickering lights, no strange monsters to speak of just yet. Luckily the back up generators had kicked in, but only in some parts of the building. Much of the college was unaffected by the power outage.
The lights may have flickered but it was nothing anyone thought too much about.
In the Hunter cabin, however, a certain huntress was quite concerned about this. She had a very bad feeling, she knew something was very very wrong.
She stared at college through the bay window in her small office, seeing the faraway building become uncharacteristically dark.
Esma couldn’t remember the college ever turning off all of the lights like this. Why tonight? What could be going on?
Everyone working on the college grounds was usually told about any maintenance being done beforehand, but the administration hadn’t said anything of the sort.
She turned away from the window to look at her child, the sweet young Rowan, with pink sorbet hair, sleeping away on her little couch in her tiny office, so peacefully.
She looked back at the college, "Something's wrong... I can feel it,” she muttered, taking one more glance at Rowan before walking outside her office.
"Clement? Can you watch Rowan for a little bit?” she asked the very average-looking man at a small desk in the bullpen.
"Sure thing, Esma. Where are you going?"
She headed for the door to exit the lodge they worked out of as she put on her coat, "I'm just going to the college. Rowan is asleep, they should be fine, I won't be gone too long."
Clement nodded as Esma left the Hunter's cabin, with a mace in her hand.
Back in the infirmary, Calvin was in critical condition. Percy stared at her hands, which were free from the blood that stained her clothes. She could feel the blood soaking the skin of her bare hands, despite there being none at all. The whole thing made her feel sick.
The doors opened suddenly, breaking her trance. Indigo entered but froze in the middle of the sickbay when she saw all of the healers surrounding her beloved.
“CALVIN!!”
What little the mage could see of Calvin horrified her, that much Percy could tell. There was such pain and fear in her face. Percy wasn’t sure what she felt about Indigo even at the best of times, but now wasn’t a good time to try to unpack all of that.
How badly she wished to comfort her, but she couldn’t. It would be so insensitive to hold her while covered in her husband’s blood.
"He can't die!" Indigo cried into Sloan's chest.
He appeared seemingly out of nowhere, although in reality he had just come out of the bathroom in fresh clothes, "He won't, love," he cooed.
"He can't die!"
"He won't!"
"He can't... I need him!"
"He won't, Indigo, I put my own life on it."
She continued to sob into Sloan's chest, and it broke Percy's heart that she couldn't make it better.
"Go change, Percy," Sloan muttered, "We'll talk in a few minutes."
The cursed professor nodded at her superior before slinking off to the bathroom, discarding her bloody clothes, and changing into the clothes provided by a kind healer in training. She didn't bother to look at her reflection before leaving the bathroom and returning to Sloan.
"What exactly attacked him?" Sloan asked, "What did you see?"
"I..." Percy sighed, "It was some kind of dog-wolf creature, covered in ink, and it had horns and claws. It was a literal monster! It looked inhuman!"
Sloan looked at her wide-eyed, "What? Are you sure?"
"Am I sure? Sloan, I know what I saw! I saw something fly by my office window, and then I heard weird sounds before I found Calvin!"
He looked terrified, as if she had just told him the devil was at the door asking him to come to hell.
He turned to the few healers who were not assisting with Calvin and his injuries, "We need to make sure no one is in the college!"
"Sloan, what the hell?!”
"Someone needs to check the tower!" he yelled.
"..The tower?!" Percy gasped.
"Whatever attacked Calvin had to have come from the Central Tower! That’s the only place it could have come from and if that’s the case then the whole campus is in danger!" Sloan explained, "We need to make sure everyone is accounted for and safe!"
Percy looked at Indigo, who sat disheveled and sobbing in a chair, then back to Sloan, "You stay here with her. I'll make sure everyone is safe!"
Within the college, the sound of inhuman chomping bounced off the walls.
Esma had come in through one of the side entrances and killed one of the creatures from the tower that was attempting to claw its way into someone's office. Thankfully the person was fine, other than being scared shitless.
The huntress recognized the creatures that she was slaughtering, from the day she had to take that exam in the central tower and so many of her classmates died. These same creatures that had been locked in that tower were getting their chance to kill indiscriminately. To get their revenge, so to speak.
Esma traveled through dark halls attacking any monster in her way. Finally, she made it to the hallway that held Duke's office. The corridor was seemingly empty, she had a straight path to the dean's office.
As she made her way to the office, she thought not only about what had transpired so far but also about the past week.
She had made a huge discovery. Duke had been conducting experiments on the monsters in that tower. The reports she had found only made this discovery more appalling. It turned out that the monsters were not the only ones he was experimenting on. He had been using children. This made Esma wonder if all of those times Duke offered to tutor Rowan, he was actually doing something far more heinous.
"Oh, Esma..."
His voice made her stop in the middle of the hall, she could feel Duke's presence looming behind her.
She sighed, "I take it this is it," she said knowing full well what would come next.
Duke cocked a pistol, “Yes, I believe so.”
He sighed mockingly, “Oh, I hope your dear Rowan is in a safe place.”
"Oh, shut up," Esma scoffed, "I know what you've done."
"Oh really? Do you?”
"The experiments, the children, the creatures in the tower. What are you doing?"
“Well you said it, experimentation! I mean, come on! Even with my age, this world of ours is full of magic and mystery, how could I not be curious about the laws of nature? ..I don’t see the problem,” Duke explained.
"So, you decided to fuck with the lives of children and play god?!," Esma scoffed.
"Are you joking?," Duke laughed, "I AM A GOD!"
She furrowed her brow, “No you’re not! You’re just an egotistical old man with a fucking god complex!”
Esma whipped behind her and attempted to smash Duke’s skull in with her mace, but she was unable to even get close to his face.
Duke stopped the mace with his free hand and tossed it away, “I remember when you were young, you had so much potential. You could have been so powerful, if you had only agreed to learn from me. If only I could have taken you under my wing, maybe then things would be different.”
“And you would never have messed with my kid,” Esma retorted.
"Right, right, Rowan," he sighed, "They are one of my best little creations. I even cured whatever illness poor Jacob passed down."
Esma froze in shock, so that was the reason Rowan was no longer violently ill like their father. That sentence wasn't easy to hear, "I suspected that," she lied.
"No, you didn't!" he called out laughing.
"Why do all this with the tower tonight?” Esma asked, trying to see how long she could hold out in hopes someone would find her and Duke in the hallway.
"It’s simple! I was bored."
“And do you really think you can just have Rowan after I die?! I’ve made my arrangements. I suspected for months that you were planning something, doing something fishy. I found your reports! …I should have gone with my gut and turned it all over, but I didn’t because for some stupid reason I somehow actually believed you couldn’t really be that much of a monster!”
"Then you are more foolish than I thought," Duke chuckled, "I'll get my hands on Rowan, it won't be hard. It's just sad that you won't be around to watch the end result of all my hard work."
"I hope when you die you rot in hell, you bastard!” she mocked.
"Tell your husband I said hello."
The gunshot rang throughout the halls.
After Esma hit the ground, her lifeless body laid a few feet from Duke's office. He would go on to set it up to appear as though she was murdered by one of those inky monsters. Which then escaped and hid where no one could find it.
"Momma?"
Duke was shocked to hear a child’s voice. It was Rowan.
There they stood at the end of the hall, it seemed they wandered over to the college after Esma left them. This was a problem for Duke, because there is no telling how much the small child saw.
"Thomas," Duke called one of his attendants, "call all the mages, we need to gather in the roundtable room."
"Sir, what about Indigo? Calvin's been injured and she's a wreck.”
More of his attendants showed up and covered Esma’s body with a tarp.
Duke clicked his tongue in annoyance, “She is powerful, but she’d just get in the way. Indigo would likely interfere with the spell. I’ll deal with her later. Now, call the other mages like I asked you, Thomas!” he demanded firmly.
Thomas nodded, “Yes, sir. Sorry sir,” he wandered off to follow his orders.
He turned to Rowan and gave them a devilish grin, “Hey, Row Row! Would you like to come play in my office while we wait for your mommy to wake up?”
All the child did was nod, taking Duke’s hand as he led them to his office.
The next few hours were strange for the young one as they were moved from Duke’s office to a large room with an enormous round table surrounded by mages.
They soon forgot everything about their life up to that point. They couldn’t remember their recently deceased father, their slain mother, the horrible experiments Duke put them through before making them swear to secrecy, and of course that night.
Though there wasn’t much for them to remember about that night. All they saw was their mother’s corpse, they hadn’t witnessed the murder. And due to their young age, they had just thought she was asleep.
But now, seven years later they knew better.
Present-day Rowan was still in the healing pool with Elias and Maverick at their sides and Indigo and Georgia muttering the magical incantations.
The room was a golden color from all of the seer magic being used.
Rowan’s eyes snapped open and they audibly gasped. The others were startled by the sudden change.
That turned to panic when Rowan suddenly started sinking below the water.
The boys quickly pulled them out of the water.
The pink haired teen gasped for air, while Elias pushed their hair out of the way.
Rowan suddenly remembered everything from their lost years, including the pain of Duke’s experiments. This finally explained all of those scars scattered across their body.
They heaved as they began sobbing, they leaned against Elias and clawed against his soft pajama-like clothing. All they could do was scream and wail, "MOMMA!" as they continued to cry into Elias's chest.
