Since I’ve been asked this a couple of times here are some tips on how to tell if the media you’re watching/reading is credible and which way their bias leans. These are tips I came across via Katherine Brodsky on X and, ironically, a publication from NowThis a few years back (which is an outlet guilty of a lot of tactics they were calling out. But still, the tips are good). Employing these tactics when you are unsure about the media you’re consuming can help you determine on your own how trustworthy that source is or is not.
1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don’t trust anonymous sources.
3. Don’t trust sources that cite other news outlets as the source of the information.
4. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
“We are getting reports” could mean anything.
“We are seeking confirmation” means they don’t have it.
“[News Outlet] has learned” means they have a scoop or are going out on a limb.
“Experts say/believe” who are these experts? How many were asked? How were they chosen? What are their credentials as they relate to this specific topic? Is there really a consensus?
5. Does the image chosen accurately represent the story?
6. Watch out for conflation. Media outlets will often try to conflate two things that have nothing to do with each other to try and make it seem like a certain thing/person is responsible for a failure or success.
7. Leading language. Whether a publication uses words like pro-choice or pro-abortion, gun rights or gun control, riots or protests, migrants or illegals, birthing person or woman will tell you a lot. This is a tactic that can often go unnoticed by people that is designed to persuade you to subconsciously accept a judgment or opinion of the journalist instead of just presenting the facts and allowing you to come to your own conclusions.
8. Bias by omission. A journalist can present facts in a way that appears to be neutral but in reality they have chosen to include some facts and exclude others, which creates an inaccurate picture and narrative and limits our understanding of the reality.
9. Another type of omission that can be very telling is news outlets simply choosing not to report certain stories at all.
10. Story placement. What makes the front page? What gets buried?

“American Red Cross Ends Blood Donation Rules Singling Out Gay and Bisexual Men”
The Red Cross acknowledged that the previous policy was unfair and discriminatory.
“The American Red Cross announced a significant change to its blood donation guidelines on August 7, ending restrictions that imposed additional requirements on gay and bisexual men because of their sexual orientation.

The new guidelines align with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's May decision, the FDA’s decision to drop its nearly 40-year policy requiring men who have sex with men to be abstinent for three months before being eligible to donate blood. Now, this three-month waiting period applies to anyone who has recently had sex with a new partner or partners and engaged in anal sex, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender.

On its website, the American Red Cross said it recognizes that basing the waiting period on anal sex “may feel like it unfairly targets gay and bisexual men.” The organization said it intends to keep sharing info with the FDA to continue developing more inclusive blood donation guidelines.”
It’s a change, but not a great improvement yet.

Please read, don't scroll pass this. (II)
One the previous post I talked about the KOSA Bill and the TikTok Ban Bill as you can see above, but now for this post I'm going to talk about something of even greater importance. Project 2025.
Project 2025 is a plan from Republicans / Conservatives to seize total control of America from the inside out while destroying democracy in the process, ultimately turning America into a Christian nationalist militarized state. One of the main ways they plan on making this a reality is through Trump getting a second term as president.
If this comes to pass, this will ruin and even end the lives of many, and to make it worse, the changes caused by Project 2025 will still be in effect even long after Trump's second term ends.
We cannot let Trump when this election, and as much as I hate this, Biden is really our only choice since voting on a 3rd party will most likely won't work. I know Biden has a lot of problems, but we don't have a choice.
Here is some more links with some additional info (including the actual Project 2025 website), please look more into this and spread this around (even if you're not in America)

The Importance of Cryptids to Indigenous Cultures
Tumblr media
For a lot of us, cryptids like the sasquatch or skinwalkers might be a laughable concept. But for many Indigenous people, tales of cryptids aren’t a novelty; they’re important parts of their cultures.
In honor of November’s Native American Heritage Month, NowThis spoke to Matthew Gilliam, an Indigenous folklore expert and reconnecting Hopi man.
He said many creatures from Indigenous folklore, like the sasquatch, were introduced into the fabric of pop culture through a white lens in movies or reality TV series — and typically as something unusual, rare, or meant to be hunted…

Liberal watchdog Media Matters fired at least a dozen staffers Thursday — and management and some of the laid-off journalists blamed X owner Elon Musk for the cuts.
The billionaire mogul sued the Washington, DC-based nonprofit organization for defamation last November, accusing the company of manufacturing images showing advertisements from major companies alongside posts made by white supremacists and neo-Nazis.
The lawsuit led to federal probes by Republican Attorneys General Ken Paxton of Texas and Andrew Bailey of Missouri into the outlet for possible fraudulent activity by allegedly manipulating data on the site formerly known as Twitter.
Media Matters did not immediately return requests for comment but its president Angelo Carusone released a statement on Thursday regarding the layoffs.
“We’re confronting a legal assault on multiple fronts and given how rapidly the media landscape is shifting, we need to be extremely intentional about how we allocate resources in order to stay effective,” Carusone said.
“Nobody does what Media Matters does. So, we’re taking this action now to ensure that we are sustainable, sturdy and successful for whatever lies ahead.”
Ousted staffers took to social media Thursday to announce their sudden dismissal, with one having particularly harsh words for Musk.
“Bad News: I’ve been laid off from @mmfa, along with a dozen colleagues. There’s a reason far-right billionaires attack Media Matters with armies of lawyers: They know how effective our work is, and it terrifies them (him),” Kat Abughazaleh wrote.
The Post reached out to Musk for comment.
Other longtime Media Matters journalists lamented the layoffs.
“After nearly four years of working at media matters, I got laid off,” wrote a staffer named Beatrice. “So if anyone is looking for researchers with video experience, drop a line.”
“Journalism milestone achieved (got laid off),” now-former Media Matters writer Bobby Lewis added.
“Layoffs at Media Matters today. Lots of smart people available for jobs now,” said Jared Holt, a senior researcher at the Institute of Strategic Dialogue.
At the time of the Musk lawsuit, Carusone called it “meritless” and pointed out that “major brands” are “rightly skittish of partnering” with the social media platform.
The suit which was filed in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas — is still winding through the judicial system.
Media Matters’ purge is the latest in a slew of layoffs in the industry — and notably at liberal outlets.
NowThis laid off half of its editorial team in February as part of a “broader initiative to realign our resources and structure to ensure a long-term sustainable business in the evolving media landscape,” The Daily Caller first reported.
The Intercept also laid off 15 staffers, including its editor in chief Roger Hodge, on the same day. Last month, The New York Times reported that the news site co-founded by Glenn Greenwald is running low on cash and that it is in danger of closing next year.

Major Companies Support Pride Month and Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislators
Major Companies Support Pride Month and Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislators
time to celebrate, allies must not lose sight of the fact that the LGBTQ+ community should be celebrated year-round. Every year, however, many major companies continue to fall short of understanding that. During Pride Month, companies spend June 1 to June 30 adorning their websites with rainbow flag logos, changing their menu items, and profiting off of the LGBTQ + community. Their support often…
