Picking
The question “How do you know which in-game item a user has clicked on?“ has surprisingly many answers. It’s not a particularly difficult question to answer, but there are several “correct“ answers out there in textbooks and tutorials. Each of them is supposed to be for 3D games, but they all can be made to work in 2D, for obvious reasons.
Render To Buffer
In order to determine which item a user has clicked on, you render the 3D scene to a special buffer, with special colours and without shading. Every object has its own unique colour (maybe you give each clickable object a unique 24-bit or 32-bit ID) that can be looked up somewhere. Objects that aren’t clickable are just 0x000000.
Now you can look up the position of the mouse cursor in that buffer, look up the colour in your look-up table, et voilà, you get the object the user has clicked on.
Render To Pixel
Rendering the whole 3D scene again with false colours is actually rather wasteful. How about instead of rendering a whole buffer the size of the window, you just render a 1x1 pixel buffer, and set up the camera/view frustum/projection matrix so that the perspective of that pixel is the same as the perspective of the corresponding pixel on the screen? The maths here should be simplified if the reticle is in the centre of the screen. If your engine has view frustum culling, this could even be highly performant.
Draw-And-Pick
Do you enjoy living dangerously? Do you hate your colleagues? Your future self?
Just do drawing and picking in one pass. What could possibly go wrong? Inside your drawing code, just check if the pixel you are currently drawing is under the mouse. This only really works if you are doing software rendering, and it will come back to bite you sooner or later, but it saves you from implementing a separate picking step. So who can say if this is really wrong?
Geometry
This is the most boring answer. In Unity, there is an option to do a ray-cast on the collision data. Sometimes this method is not pixel-perfect, because some objects have hitboxes that are smaller than their render geometry, some have hitboxes that are simple shapes circumscribed around their geometry, and some don’t have collision geometry at all, so the mouse click goes right through them.
All in all, having your level geometry in a data structure you can query easily for continuous collision detection is a pretty good deal. If you can, take this deal!
Physics
This is the most fun answer. Just spawn an object, launch it into the direction of the cursor, and trigger an action when it hits something.

“What’s a Mess Webley?”
cw: suicide
That’s a question asked several times after this post went up.
A Mess Webley is the apocryphal “Pistol, Service, Revolver .455, officers (disgraced) for the use of”...
Tumblr media
...kept in the Mess, which is where military personnel dine and socialise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, that’s a wild boar, yes, it’s wearing a top hat and yes, it’s smoking a cigarette in a holder. Because Tradition.
*****
Resorting to the Mess Webley allowed the aforementioned disgraced officer to retain a modicum of honour and integrity, if not necessarily any moral high ground, by Doing The Decent Thing.
To avoid making a mess in the Mess, it’s preferred that DTDT takes place outdoors or at least out-open-window; a .455 is a stonking big soft-nosed bullet and decorators cost a fortune.
*****
It wouldn’t happen in 10 Downing Street anyway; honour, integrity, morality and decency have played no role at that address for a long while now.
As mentioned in the other post, that famous flood of “my-integrity-cannot-tolerate” resignations came from the same shoal of hypocritical remora-fish who had let every preceding incident go by without putting their names to anything.
There were plenty of incidents: Google “Boris Johnson” + “Scandals”, “Cover-Ups” and don’t forget to add their regular associate “Lies” because he was incompetent at the Cover-Up bit as well as so much else.
*****
BJ redecorated the flat where he lived over the shop to the tune of +£200,000 / +€236,000 / +$240,000. Yes, decorators do cost a fortune, especially when there’s a chance someone else might foot the bill. However this bit of chicanery became public (as usual) and BJ had to dip into his own pocket instead.
It’s far from the most tasteful fix-up, though there are advantages.
DTDT in this room, on that sofa, and it’s possible nobody would see a difference.

You know, me and the artist/colorist for the comic adaptation of the Thrawn (2017) novel got BEEF because they’ve got fandom thinking Thrawn is a man who can’t dress himself.
Thrawn.
A theatrical bastard whose whole thing has to do with the psychology behind visual aesthetics. If anyone knows how someone is going to perceive him based on how he dresses, it would be this guy.

You're arguing with a woman (electronic) who says she loves having abortions in the same breath she accuses *you* of being in a "death cult". Do you ever feel like mass literacy was a mistake?
Ah, but if they weren't literate, how could we subject them to standardized tests?
Checkmate, reactionaries.

The Universe Really Doesn’t Like People Who Are Nice to Zuko...
Or at the very least being “kind to Zuko” is an action which tends to blow up in people’s faces and lead to significant negative consquences.
[To be clear, this list isn’t entirely serious, and I am not blaming Zuko for the negative consequences other people suffer after they’re kind to him.  He’s a traumatized and abused kid trying to navigate some very bad situations with little guidance, and half the time what happens to others isn’t his fault at all].
1. Ursa gets banished as a result of saving Zuko’s life.
2. Iroh spends years traveling with Zuko in order to support him. In return, Zuko often behaves very disrespectfully toward him(to be fair to Zuko, often times Iroh is acting like an idiot and deserves it).
3. Zuko’s crew loyally serves him for years, yet Zuko generally treats them like dirt (aside from a brief moment in “The Storm”).
4. The Fire Sages ally with Zuko and aid him in his attempt to capture Aang, and they all end up being imprisoned for treason. Arguably, Zhao imprisoned them/was able to justify imprisoning them since they failed to apprehend the banished prince when he returned to the Fire Nation(admittedly, this was a bit of a strench).
5. Aang saves Zuko’s life in “The Blue Spirit” and tells him that he wishes that he could be friends with him, and Zuko responds by trying to burn off his face.
6. On the other hand, the Gaang saving Zuko’s life in “The Siege of the North Part II” has no severe consequences, at least until the end of Book 2.
7. Song and her mother are very kind to Zuko (and Iroh), and they get their ostrich horse stolen for it.
8. However, the family in “Zuko Alone” suffers no negative consequences directly from their kindness toward Zuko, although their life does keep getting worse while he’s around...
9. Obviously, at the end of Book 2 Zuko repays Iroh’s kindness by betraying him and rejecting him in favor of Azula and Ozai, leading directly to Iroh’s imprisonment in Book 2.
10. Katara is very kind to Zuko in the catacombs, and of course the result is that he sides with Azula, leading to Aang’s “death.”
11. More specifically, she shows him the spirit water because she kindly offers to heal his scar, and this leads directly to Zuko sending Combustion Man after the Gaang.
12. Azula makes a sincere, if flawed, attempt to reconcile with her brother, and it leads directly to her downfall, including through Zuko (probably inadvertently) throwing her under the bus in his conversation with Ozai.
13. Ty Lee tries to kindly and supportively connect with Zuko in “The Beach,” and as a result Zuko mocks her, calls her a circus freak, and makes her cry, showing zero remorse for it.
14. Ruon Jian and Chan (reluctantly) invite Zuko (and Azula) to their party, and as result Zuko breaks Chan’s grandmother’s vase, not to mention their house ends up getting burned down and their party ruined.
15. Although Mai is flawed, she is very supportive of Zuko in Book 3. In return, she gets poorly treated by him at Ember Island. When she gives him a second chance, he ends up breaking up with her via letter!
16. When Toph goes off behind the Gaang’s back to meet Zuko and try to find a way to get him into the Gaang, he ends up accidently burning her feet, leading to the famous “why am I so bad at being good” line.
17. Mai saves Zuko’s life and helps him escape, and she gets imprisoned for it.
Obviously, there are other instances where characters are nice to Zuko and don’t suffer any serious consequences as a result. Still, the pattern suggests that generally being kind to him is a poor bet, unless you want to suffer.

Stephen King's IT is a YA book. The protagonists are young, it's a fantasy story about saving the world from a monster, and I first read it as a teen.

A central banker and a regular banker should not be such different jobs lol. The vibes are all wrong. The latter provides deposits and credit facilities, tries to earn profits and minimize risk, transfers credit between entities with a surplus and ones with a deficit, all standard stuff. A central banker is a social engineer who controls how much people spend and the fate of nations and economies. It's the difference between being your average dad with a mortgage, a wife, three kids and a dog and being a member of the illuminati controlling the destiny of humanity from the shadows.

Some thoughts on the trailer, now that it's had time to settle a little.
I genuinely do not see romantic interest from Ray > Sand in that trailer. I see a lot of possessiveness, which makes me think he hires him for sure (and assumes, like a too-rich asshole, that the monetary transaction gives him ownership). Sand is busy falling in love. Ray is busy being a selfish prick.
I'm so ready for Khaotung's Asshole Era haha.
BostonNick intrigues me, however. I did not expect that. It does seem like Boston genuinely likes Nick, at least up to a point, which I didn't expect. But that twisted, bitter look on his face before Mew kicks him into the pool...I think he's in love with Top. So it's gonna be one of those stories.
I wish there'd been more Mew. I get what they're doing with the trailer - everyone has said that the RaySand storyline is the most angsty and dramatic and so of course they'd feature in a trailer meant to entice people to watch (preference for happy endings aside, I think we can all agree we love drama) - but I'd still like to have some idea of who Mew is, considering he's clearly our main POV character. Right now I get a lot of nothing except that he's very pretty and a hunch that he's probably not that sweet & innocent. Sorry but look at his friends, man.
I hope Top and Sand are bitter exes and that they make out about it at least once. I could also get behind Sand and Nick having angsty "the assholes we love love someone else" sex at some point.
I want to know why Sand is stomping out that phone. Is it his? Someone else's? If it's his, does he realize he doesn't actually need to destroy the phone, he can just remove the SIM card? Like what is the goal here, drama queen? If it's someone else's, whose and again, why?
WHO is Boston making out with towards the end? I've heard Ray, whoever Papang is playing, and Nes (Title's character) all tossed out as possibilities. Personally I like the idea of Ray mostly because Tonhon Chonlatee made me want a Neo/Khaotung pair up. However I don't think it is because dude isn't wearing an earring and Ray has both his ears done.
First getting to reprise the Alan Scream (TM) from Moonlight Chicken. <3
Why do I get the feeling someone is gonna die, and why is it going to be Top or Sand?
