#not a pet
Note
if a primate has been kept as a pet for a long time and thus has a hard time socializing with its peers, would another former pet be a good friend? like, would they recognise them as somewhere between a human and a wild primate of its species, or would there be problems i havent thought of with this type of rehab?
This is actually a very common practice! Chimp Haven has a troupe they call "the oddballs", made up of a mishmash of chimps from different backgrounds, including being raised as pets, which make them good matches for each other. Because all of them have different backgrounds which impact their social lives, they are more easily able to get along and figure out a place in the troupe. Being raised and socialized by humans can lead to difficulty communicating and social awkwardness, so it can be easier to learn from someone who has had similar struggles. The best thing for any primate is relationships with their own species, so being close with one another helps their social development and eases feelings of alienation.
The chimps at Chimp Haven will live there their whole lives, but you'll be happy to know that relationships among former pets can also be instrumental in re-wilding efforts. I read an update from a sanctuary that does gibbon rewilding on two gibbons that had been raised as pets in a household. The two were introduced to each other and became a mated pair, helping each other learn the skills they need in the wild. Last I heard, the early stages of re-introducing the two to the forest was happening and the sanctuary was hoping that they would have a wild born baby in the near future: a great sign for the couple feeling capable of providing for themselves and their young as well as a great sign for gibbon conservation.

Just got my weekly email from an online invertebrates store I get some of my pets and pet supplies from and...
Tumblr media
And of course they are wild caught, something which happens far more than I'd like with this shop
Tumblr media
Love using memes to sell wild caught, exotic and difficult to keep animals.

Hi i just sent this ask to the primate video blog but then i saw your note abt how asks should be sent here. Oops! Sorry abt that!
I just wanted to ask for advice abt a situation i had at work today. I work at the zoo and today a customer casually mentioned owning a Capuchin monkey. She even showed me photos despite me not asking and the monkey was wearing baby clothes :(. She then said that it was her "service pet" since shes deaf. And I dont want to talk over disabled folks but it REALLY seems like an excuse since i dont see any other deaf folks who NEEEEED a Capuchin monkey to live :/. Like, just get a DOG instead.
Anyways, do you have any advice on how to respond to that kind of situation in a "socially acceptable" manner???
This is a really difficult situation to be in, and I dont blame you for not knowing what to do. I'll add a disclaimer that I am not experienced in this area, so please take this as one piece of advice out of many and continue doing research.
First of all, monkeys are not service animals. I mean this in the literal sense: the only species that can be service animals are dogs, and in some areas miniature horses. This is true of the United States and Canada. So while a person can have any sort of pet that they find supportive while living with a disability, a monkey is not and cannot be a service animal. I feel it important to make this distinction because service animals are necessary companions for disabled people who already face discrimination from people who don't understand the difference between a service animal, a pet, and an emotional suppkrt animal.
Unfortunately if it is legal to own monkeys in your state/region, there is not much you can do. I advise you not to alienate this person, but to ask questions if you get the chance. Reaching out to sanctuaries in your region that take former pets may be something you are interested in doing, but ultimately the hardest part is you need to be able to walk away.
The sad truth is that it is not your responsibility to save this monkey, and there isn't much you can do. Beyond educating yourself (and others when possible) and advocating for an end to private ownership of primates by supporting the captive primate safety act, you may need to let it go as much as you can allow yourself.

Just a PSA about submissions! We will not be posting submissions of pet primates or ones that are obviously being mistreated. While we are always happy to give details on why certain things are cruel (questions like "why is it bad for monkeys to wear diapers?" Will be answered) we will not publish submissions along the lines of "look at this person with a pet monkey" or "is this primate pet owner bad?" Most times.
Owning a primate as a pet is always cruel.
We will never condone owning a primate as a pet in any circumstances, especially not pet primates which are filmed and exploited for viral content. As such, we don't feel the need to comment on individuals engaging in this exploitation. Posting this content, even when criticising it, is platforming cruel and abusive situations.
