Fontaine, as a whole, is a nation I feel was so nearly perfect, but also just... somewhat unsatisfying.
Like, the exploration is nice, the puzzles and mechanics are fun, but... it's so easy. I have the entire map 100%. I didn't use a guide for most of it (only for Special Stuff like the treasure maps and foggy branches), nor did I have the treasure compass. All I had to help me was the hydroculus resonance gadget. The only regions in the game I got to 100% without any guides before was Galesong Hill (which, tbh, most ppl probably have at 100% or close %), and Hypostyle Desert (simply bc the underground ruins were so much fun to explore). Everywhere else I used a guide for at some point. During 4.0 I literally felt like I had to hold back on exploring just to not finish it too quickly. Yeah.
The world quests have a lot of interesting stuff going for them, especially the Narzissenkreuz questline and the ones in/around Merusea Village. But... they feel like they're missing something. I don't feel like I'm properly done with any of them, even though there isn't really anything more to add. The Narzissenkreuz quests had a very strong start, I cared about the characters involved and the lore they're a part of, and having it be 3 questlines that combine into one comprehensive story was really fun, but the ending feels... unceremonious almost. I can't pinpoint what's wrong with it, it answered what it needed to and it made it clear what everyone was doing going forward, but... it feels off. Anticlimatic, almost, despite it having the climax it needed. The world quest I was most satisfied with was the Questioning Melusine And Answering Machine quests, and it's a largely self-contained one. Everything else feels... unfinished, almost. But also not.
And the Archon Quests are so so good, but also... weird at parts. First of all, Childe's out-of-nowhere traumadump early on is jarring, especially since... they didn't really follow up with it properly? Like yes, the Narwhal and Skirk ended up relevant but... not to him, for the most part. The important questions this conversation prompted wasn't elaborated or followed up on, which is what could've justified including it at all. We still have no more clues as to why the Narwhal connected with him, we don't know what caused his restlessness or why his vision messed up, and Skirk was kinda just... there. She loredumped and that was that.
There's other oddities too, like Traveler getting upset at the twins for hiding their Fatui affiliation. Traveler has every right to be upset with them in that moment but... not for that. They should be upset because they lied about the magic show, not about being Fatui. Like, you literally called Childe you're friend just the other day! And he's literally tried to kill you (well, okay, not "kill", but he was still an enemy)! And later on you're suddenly fine with Arlecchino, a person we have seen time and time again is an absolutely terrible person? Because, what, she cared about this one specific problem that affected innocent lives? Really?
Furina and Childe not getting checked up on by basically anyone at the end of 4.2s AQ feels not only out of character (you're gonna tell me Traveler isn't gonna check on them after all that happened? Really?) but also just... very shitty. The only one who seemed to even care was Neuvillette, everyone else just kinda... forgot about those two. Despite the fact that 1) Furina was a well liked public figure who, even after the truth was revealed, people very much still cared about, and 2) Childe literally saved the entire nation but stalling the Narwhal for over a month. Even Neuvillette couldn't so much as deter that thing until he got his full powers back, and you're telling me nobody, not even the people who where directly saved by him, even wondered what became of him? Really?
The characters are fantastic here, don't get me wrong, everyone is lovely and I adore them all, but the way the story handled certain things is just... not great. It's unsatisfying. It feels like there were things they wanted to do but either chickened out of or simply didn't get to include. It's so jarring.

So I had a kinda wild Lmk dream last night and I figured I could ramble about it-
So, in this dream, there’s another big world ending threat that they need help from a specific person to defeat the bad guy that’s behind this new threat to the world. This person they need help from is the long armed gibbon
Thing is, she (btw the long armed gibbon is female in this dream) was actually imprisoned by Wukong (she got the deluxe version of being trapped under a mountain like Wukong was, meaning it took a lot more to keep her contained) because she was incredibly powerful and dangerous. This means Wukong knows where she was and they go to where she’s trapped at, and when they get there, she’s gone, she escaped somehow.
So they have to go find her and when they finally manage to do so after a bunch of searching around and journey shenanigans that I can’t remember the details of, Wukong tells her they need her help and she looks at him and says, “No. I’m not helping you.”
And that’s what happened in my dream, I think I woke up after that so sadly it ended with the Long armed Gibbon telling Wukong no-

I'm totally and completely back on my Stancy bs and am resisting the urge to watch s4 for a third time just for the Stancy scenes.
Also, if anyone has any good fic recs please let me know because trying to filter ao3 to avoid every single other ship is very, very annoying.

I'm so glad somebody reblogged There's Nothing Wrong With Dale. I've been reading it on and off throughout the day, and it's been wonderful. I'm so excited to see where you'll take it (also you're awful for leaving the story on such a cliffhanger, hahaha).
this is from part 22 i think, which shows how often i leave off on a cliffhanger! (gotta keep everyone on their toes!)
i'm so glad you've been enjoying the story and there's so much to binge at once now lol
thanks for letting me know you've been liking it!!
new chapter will drop in the hour

I do kinda regret that I didn't split chapter fifteen at "if you think you're safe with me, you're crazy" but I was still hoping that i could have three jedi done in 30 chapters at that point.

so i just finished s2 and I realize I might be in the minority with this one but I thought the ending was genuinely satisfying. (as much as a cliffhanger can be satisfying, anyway.)
it feels like every shot during the last ten minutes directly parallels an earlier scene which, yes, made it hit much harder for me, my heart got broken, absolutely. but like, this was done with so much precision and purpose, i'm not even mad?
normally with moments like this I'm thinking "was that really necessary?" and "now that's just mean" - because a lot of the time those moments are made for viewer engagement, not for the actual story.
here i was just nodding along (while crying) like "oh of course Crowley is still outside, waiting, of course he's standing right next to the bentley like he did in s1, there we go, another reference"
on a purely technical level, the ending was extremely well done, every single piece from the music to the shot composition emphasizing the storytelling and building onto each other.
to me, it was like Neil (and everyone involved) was saying "hey. look. trust us. we know these characters. we remember this scene and this moment and this song and this shot. we are doing this on purpose, because we know the story and this is what the story needs"
i don't know, i just feel way better about having my heart broken by someone who actually appears to have considered the reassembly beforehand.

When scrolling Netflix in 2021 & checking out the Daughter from Another Mother preview, I thought it sounded like a fun family dramedy that, despite being painfully straight (as most girlbossraisingmykids#femalefriendship-centric shows/stories tend to be), could be a great watch for the times I want a spanish language show to put on for help with my spanish learning goals, and cracked a sassy gay joke to myself, as one does, that it would be made better by the two hot moms getting together.....
But by gods, they really did it though. They truly had the gumption. They built up the deep friendship that develops into sapphic tension, and actually had the courage to pull the trigger. The road was rocky at times, and at many moments I thought hope was lost, but in the end, they really, really had the two hot moms get together 👏😭 👏😭👏😭👏😭 beautiful, inspiring, cinematic genius, incredible,

Dragon Ball Z: Abridged Episode 48 Review
Originally posted June 3rd, 2016
Guys, the climax is supposed to be at the end.
Tumblr media
I should probably be in love with “Advanced Geometry.” Semi-Perfect Cell is an absolute delight, Tien gets to swoop in and kick some serious ass, and Goku performs one of his funniest Deus ex Machina in the entire series. And on a purely visceral level, I do love this episode, but that doesn’t mean that “Geometry” is not without a rather glaring flaw: Tien draining himself and being nearly killed by Cell is the climax of the episode, and there is still one third of the episode that follows it.
Now, I’m not one for strict adherence to the “three-act structure,”1 but even within the that broken paradigm, there is an incredible wisdom to only having a relatively small portion of the story to follow the climax. It certainly would’ve been unsatisfying to end this episode with Tien on the ground before Cell with no knowledge of what would happen to him, but ending immediately after Goku rescues him? That would’ve been completely satisfying, as that Is where the story of this episode ends.
Continuing after Tien’s rescue also does a thematic disservice to the sacrifice he made in fighting Cell as effectively as he did. Beyond the Senzu bean recovery removing any narrative consequence to the sacrifice (thanks Toriyama), it’s also very disappointing to see the narrative focus on the return of two Super Saiyans not two minutes after we’ve been shown that true heroism is telling Cell, Super Saiyans, and power levels to fuck themselves and giving everything you have to holding the evil back, even if your efforts are ultimately futile.
Despite Cell’s insults towards humanity, Tien (and Krillin before him) has proven that it doesn’t take fulfilling an ancient alien prophecy to do some modicum of good, and having to listen to Vegeta rant about his power increase after that is incredibly dissonant with the stated themes of the first two thirds of this episode.
Rating: 3.5/5

Stray Observations
1One of the things I love most about anime as a genre is how it consistently flies against the ideas propagated by Western storytellers about how stories should work, especially in regards to the three-act structure. Now, this isn’t true for all anime, but a lot of shows in the shonen genre actively avoid structuring individual episodes with three separate acts, instead choosing to showcase a fight over multiple episodes with each “act” of the fight given an entire episode, and while that can and does cause pacing issues, it also makes each encounter more dynamic, giving it room to breathe and develop far more naturalistically than it might with a three act structure.
By the way, I define “act” in this context as the section of a story wherein a character makes a specific and irreversible choice, and it is entirely possible for individual fights to have multiple acts inside of it.
Krillin Owned: 32, because he didn’t think to stop flying towards a moving plane.
“Booby-bomb!”
Chiaotzu: “Died? Yes. Jesus, we’ve literally all done it.” Chi Chi: “I haven’t.” Chiaotzu: “Give it some time, you’re hanging with the right crowd.”
“Ki-ko-fuck yourself.”
Does… does Goku see the world like it’s a Wes Anderson film? Because that sounds amazing.
Vegeta: “I am finally stronger than you!” Goku: “Neat!” Vegeta: “Fuck you!”

I was in the supercorp team… but you all are giving me fandom envy
hey buddy!!!! I haven't seen supergirl but I've always loved the gifs of super Corp, Kara seems sweet and lena seems so kickass!
and haha, the grass is always greener I think however the mdzs/wangxian fandom is pretty fun. it's so large that I can literally just lurk, read fic and Have Brain Rot.
the story is so expansive that once you realize you like it, you're in too deep. I always recommend giving it a go because there is something for everyone. there are excellent fic writers too and a lot of them a wlw who write the ship as is and also as f/f so it's like you have the most popular fic writers who also write f/f content (we are so spoiled in this fandom!)
just fyi most ppl watched the Netflix show, however its based on a novel that is the 'real' story...the series of Netflix had to be adapted to censorship so the plot line is a bit different but the overarching themes are there. there is also a donghua (chinese animation/cartoon) version and YouTube should have free episodes as well (the cartoon is great with the supernatural stuff, the cgi in the live show isn't the best but the actors in the live action sold their relationship even with censorship!)

something about how there's like two actual double pages in the entirety of the jshk manga and one of them was for mitsuba's transformation in the hell of mirrors arc
#and it's deserved! it's something that completely changed the story for kou!#the other one is hananene's big moment in the picture perfect arc#(and there is also an almost double page of a Huge black and white radish yashiro earlier in the hell of mirrors arc too lol)#it is impactful as well but it makes me wonder if they were tight on time those months lol#bc really it was a lot of merit that such a long and beautifully drawn manga has so few double pages because that means drawing More#also im going to kinda spoil some parts of the arc in the next tags so don't read them if u don't want spoilers for that alksjdmlkjdm#like its kinda vague but still spoilery#this september's chapter was wild but the hell of mirrors arc is still the most bloody one i think#everything in it is still so insane to me#especially the face kou makes after seeing that#it's still my most favorite example of panel build up#as in leaving the cliffhanger for the Next page always so it makes you want to turn it#like its so!!!#you get this terrific double page#the first one in the manga so far#a boy‚ disfigured#bloody#kneeling in front of a skeleton#and you‚ the reader‚ know what has happened in the middle‚ between this scene and his last one‚ and you know that it was something horrible#and you had been waiting for this reunion!#you had been waiting for so long‚ even if it had seemed impossible!#and now it seems like it's the worst possible moment#and then when you're about to see kou's reaction‚ his full face‚ you have to turn the page#and when you do‚ he is not horrified or scared or grossed out#he is smiling!#he has the softest smile you've seen on him‚ relieved‚ incredibly happy‚ tearing up#it just gets me every single time!#and it's the first time anyone has looked at mitsuba like that.#every single of their reunions has made my breath stop i really can't wait for the next one#its such a powerful scene for real

THE HYPNAGOGIC:HOUR PODCAST. EPISODE 58, JULY 10, 2023. (PART II - FINAL)
Transcript Below. Listen to the Intro Music & Backing Soundtrack if you like HERE
ERWIN: Right. So I didn’t want to mention this until now when we’re doing the teaser episode for next week’s episode, but the field investigation in Moonwood Mill is going to be kind of like a cross-genre sort of thing–
DYLAN: [interrupting] Explain? Cross genre between us and what because if it has anything to do with a secret cabal of warlocks –?
ERWIN: No, that’s another assignment for later possibly, and it hinges on whether or not I can get my informant to start talking again; this one is a crossover into a little bit of True Crime.
DYLAN: [Dylan’s brow furrows as he poorly attempts to conceal a rather concerned expression.] True Crime? Does that mean there’s more than theories from the anonymous tips coming in? Is there actual evidence?
ERWIN: As far as evidence goes, yeah, there’s some, but unfortunately not a lot. The Hall of Sages are keeping all of this really quiet and sending out task forces to make sure that it stays hush-hush, which is what got my attention in the first place – From what little I could extract from my insider in The Vale, the anonymous tips that corroborated what I’ve already heard are really onto something that’s tangible and provable as we speak: the fact that there’s been a huge uptick in bodies found in the Moonwood Tunnels.

Would you ever try your hand at self publishing m/m romance/erotica as, like, a career on the side? Your stories are amazing and the self published mm authors I've found are doing pretty well on amazon even though they don't write as well as you.
Would you ever consider self publishing an original series in ebook form? I've read (and loved) the perth shifter series but they could sorta be read as standalones. I'm thinking of a story that ends on a cliffhanger until the next book comes out 😆
Hi anon!
I'm thinking of a story that ends on a cliffhanger until the next book comes out
Unfortunately, this is one of the most hated things you can do in publishing romance, lol. Even worse than first person perspective (which I don't hate, but a lot of readers do). And it breaks with the most fundamental rule of romance which is ending stories with a HFN (hopefully for now) or HEA (happily ever after).
And while I write fantasy romance, and dystopian romance, and science fiction romance, it's all still romance. I don't mind cliffhangers on individual chapters, but cliffhangers in a series in the romance genre is very very bad etiquette and it's Not Done (TM). It's more appropriate in horror/thriller/science fiction series etc. that don't have a strong romance basis to them (and a lot of readers still hate them and refuse to read them!), where you're not primarily rooting for two characters to get together in a relationship and that's what I write!
Even romance series that only focus on two characters across multiple books, will give each book a HFN (hopeful for now / happy for now) ending, instead of a cliffhanger. Each book is still resolved, and the idea is you can read them on their own, that's kind of the point!
My published books already do very badly financially compared to my serials, so I'm not about to like... break one of the most fundamental rules of all romance publishing just to end a book on a cliffhanger, I have my serials for that. :D (And even they have happy/hopeful endings).
And like you said - I have published m/m romance/erotica on the side. It won't ever be a career for me, because it doesn't pay as much as the original serials do. My work is too niche, people don't want to read m/m romance with as much trauma recovery as I write, or asexual characters etc (I make more from a single month of Patreon - even during a bad Patreon month - than I have from the entire 2 years that The Gentle Wolf has been out). And I like noncon BDSM and that's straight up against Apple's and Amazon's TOS, so things like Fae Tales are against the rules there anyway. But my published works earn me about $200 USD a year, which is not nothing, but it's also...not great. I don't think the answer is breaking even more romance rules though x.x
I'm glad you enjoy my writing anon! But a lot of folks who read published m/m actually don't love my (published) writing, so it's serials for me, because that seems to do a lot better. :D Besides, people can download all my original serials as ebooks for their ereaders whenever they want, so they can read my stuff like an ebook whenever they feel like.

Today I wrote about 900 words \o/ But only 100 of those were in the thing I wanted to add words to :( And most of them are in the wrong chapter. :( :(
#i know i need to finish the next AU chapter - just today i thought “they've been stuck mid-shag for ages. her legs must be sore by now”#but it's okay! fictional characters don't experience the flow of time when they're not being written! i assume!#i also thought “oh for fuck's sake stop wangsting [sic] about your illegitimate wean” oh no i am sick of the main plotline!!!#look as long as this next chapter is posted before march of next year i won't have broken my “longest time stuck between chapters” record#this is why many people don't read WIPs isn't it?#one scene requires the main characters to talk about their feelings for each other - URGH!!!#(but everyone who was worrying about how far AU!Sylvie is just in this for the sperms can relax as you will FIND OUT in chapter 5!)#(also i'm pretending it's making An Ironic Statement that i wrote fic about the woes of historical queens and she's not the PoV character)#(but actually i just didn't want to have to write lots of pregnancy stuff. this way i can lock her in a darkened room for much of that)#(oh god i'm so sorry AU!Sylvie the Confinement thing seemed like a good idea at the time... well no it always seemed fucked up. but.)#(and! chapter 6 makes things a bit clearer about what Unspecified Tasks AU!Loki has been doing off-screen. clue: it involves knives.)#(chapter 7 will be Mostly Filth but also a Shocking Cliffhanger!)#(and chapter 8 brings The Ending! gosh what a thrilling ride lies ahead when/if i actually finish writing this story! stay tuned!)#but no i'm gonna go now and see if i can at least get her legs into a more comfortable position#the sylki au that got longer and wronger#don't believe the hype#fic related
