My Aaron Minyard headcanons that float around in my head all day every day and I need to write down before I forget them.
1. He is a mf with chronic migraines and he will let everyone know it and he will use it as an excuse to be an asshole.
2. He for sure wears Nike Blazers Mid 77s and baggy tops with baggy bottoms. And he’s a neutral/earth tones kinda person.
3. He is constantly cold and once again will let every know about it and bitch about it at least once a day. (It’s actually multiple times a day)
4. He will bitch about his course work and talk about dropping out at least once a week but you’ll catch him dead before you catch him ditching class.
5. He skateboards and he finds it fun but he also does it because he enjoys watching Kevin freak out about him potentially falling and hurting himself and fucking the team over.

Fluent Freshman - Part 20
PREVIOUS
FF had watched more than a few self-defense videos when he believed that Andrew Minyard was looking for a dark alley to stab him in. He had learned how to turn the attacker’s momentum against them. Had learned about disarming the person trying to stab him.
He’d even had Matt teach him a few punches claiming that it was for the dust-ups that tended to happen on the court.
He, naturally, does not use any of that knowledge because his mind immediately reverts into Lizard panic mode the moment Jackson Plank takes another step forward with a knife (HUGE. Is it wild that he is thinking about Crocodile Dundee right now?)
“If you come quietly you won’t get hurt.” Jackson says and he reverts to who he is as a person and he freezes. His bravery was used up maybe it was only ever tied to great pump up songs and now in the silence of the alley he is back to being Stone-Faced Smith.
“You’re going to dial up Wesninski and if you don’t say EXACTLY what I tell you to then I’m going to have you SING in agony.”
Y’know in that moment he stops thinking about Crocodile Dundee.
He thinks about a movie that is far more ingrained in his mind than any number of self-defense videos or one-off lessons with Matthew Boyd where he’d been trying not to flinch. A movie he had watched in better days with his family and had been a favorite of his Grandma’s (and his).
He thinks about Miss Congeniality.
Sandra Bullock as Gracie Hart has taught him everything he ever truly needs to know when he takes a step back and Jackson comes at him.
He strikes right at Jackson’s nose with the palm of his hand.
“SON OF A-“
The knife is dropped and FF kicks it under a dumpster.
FF grabs the single weapon he has on his person.
The McDonald’s Megamind Happy Meal Light Effects Brainbot.
He points the LED light straight at Jackson’s eyes and just like Aaron in the car on the way back, “Shit, that’s bright!” And now completely blinded by a combination of watery eyes and LED McDonald’s toy he proceeds to SING just as Gracie Hart had taught him.
S - Solar Plexus. He punches Jackson there as hard as he can.
I - Instep. He smashes his booted foot down on the inside of Jackson’s shoes (who the fuck wears LOAFERS to a kidnapping?)
N - Nose. He’d feel bad about hitting it again if Jackson wasn’t y’know…a hitman out to hurt Captain Neil.
G - Groin. He may have to give himself just half a second to apologize to all of mankind for what he is about to do. His step brothers had definitely kicked him in the groin plenty of times to try and get a reaction. It’s an art to not let anyone know that your ball has retreated up into lower intestine. He kicks Jackson as hard as he can (collegiate athlete) with the boots that Nicky had let him borrow. He is right on target with the toe of his shoes.
Jackson goes down.
The next thing he does is not something Gracie Hart had taught him but does still feel like the right thing to do in this situation. He kicks Jackson in the head and the man goes limp.
If FF throws both hands up in the air and lets out a “I am Miss Congeniality!” Victory cry into the alleyway well no one is around or awake to know that.
He feels like he deserves a sash and a crown and some flowers.
He looks down at Jackson and then over at the van the man had hopped out of. He was definitely PLANNING on kidnapping Captain Neil so he probably has like…some kind of restraint?
Well, better to completely subdue this guy before he tries to figure out the game plan for Romero. Wait, what’s that next to the Crocodile Dundee knife, are those...?
***
Roland is calling for a second time.
Andrew had let it go to voicemail the first time. It was usually Roland complaining about Nicky, Aaron, or Kevin doing something exceptionally stupid in their inebriated states. They have a system. Roland will call and leave a voicemail detailing the dumb shit his family has gotten up to and then he’ll let it go.
If Roland calls twice then there’s an issue.
Arm still around Neil’s shoulders he answers the phone, “What.” He asks.
“You need to help your new friend. There’s some guy following him, he’s armed and dangerous and looking for someone to grab to get Neil’s attention. He tried to lead the guy outside but he’s standing watching it for now so there might have already been someone waiting?” Roland gets out in a rush and Andrew is up and moving towards the stairs even as he’s closing the phone to disconnect the call.
Neil, of course, is right on his heels. “What is it? Did something happen?” Neil asks and they are up the stairs and pushing past Frank and his stupid pineapple shirt. Andrew spots Nicky and he spots Aaron.
“Get Nicky and Aaron somewhere safe. I need to go help Smith with something.” He says because whoever this is wants Neil and Andrew will not let Neil get within grabbing distance and won’t mention it. Neil, blessedly, does what Andrew asks without question.
Andrew scans the crowd and finds a man whose gaze goes between his phone and the back door.
A face that Andrew had memorized.
One of Nathan’s surviving men.
In the same Zip Code as Neil.
And that man has the audacity to still be breathing.
He looks and Nicky and Aaron (drunk, drugged, and useless because Andrew had wanted them to be) are with Neil and Roland is directing them to the backroom.
Andrew goes out the alley and can feel Romero’s eyes on him.
He’s prepared for a lot of things to see out in that alley. He’s angry that FF hadn’t just come down and grabbed him and Neil (he does not need TWO martyrs) and he wants to know what the fuck FF was thinking (or if he was thinking at all). Even with that anger he does not wish to see FF’s blood spilled all over an alleyway because Andrew’s family needed to be protected and FF was the only one sober enough and aware enough to do it.
He knows what Nathan’s men are capable of.
Knows that Romero was one of Nathan’s best so if there is someone out in the alleyway then it’s likely one of his other bests.
FF doesn’t even know how to use a knife. He had asked and FF had firmly declined every time Andrew had brought it up after the first fainting incident. “I’m not interested in learning that. No.” Had been the standard response.
He knew FF had at least taken a lesson or two from Boyd on throwing a punch considering the one he shot out a week ago when a Striker came at him after the third time FF intercepted a pass.
Still, Andrew had not anticipated coming out into the alleyway and finding an unharmed FF securing an unconscious Jackson Plank’s arms behind his back with fuzzy handcuffs.
“Am I interrupting something?” He asks and FF looks up at him with a flush on his cheeks.
“It’s not my fault this is a weird sex alleyway! They’re the first thing I found on my way over to the van to look for actual restraints.” FF says immediately and Andrew almost laughs at the insanity of it. “Wait, where’s Captain Neil?” FF looks around nervously.
“He’s with Aaron and Nicky in the backroom. Roland gave me your S.O.S.” Andrew says even as he quickly makes his way away from the door and towards FF. “Romero is watching the door. Let’s give him a reason to come out.” He says going over to Jackson and when he rolls the man over he raises an eyebrow at the piss stain on his pants and the blood dripping down his nose.
He looks to FF who resolutely does not look back at him.
It’s a story he’ll get out of his friend eventually. Looks like FF didn’t really need those knife lessons. Something settles a bit more in Andrew, it’s nice to have someone else in their group that could handle themselves in a fight.
Andrew finds a phone and FF rolls Jackson back onto his stomach, “He could choke on his own blood.” He shrugs and Andrew wouldn’t care if Jackson choked on his own blood in fuzzy handcuffs in a back alley but he can understand FF not wanting a murder charge.
Andrew looks at the phone and sees the the swipe pattern clear as day. It takes him two tries to get the order right but then Jackson’s phone is available for him to get over to the texting app.
The texts he reads there make him angry. There were a lot of plans on what the two of them were going to do to Neil before his body was offered up to a different crime family to show that Romero and Jackson had no loyalty left to the Wesninski line.
He types out a text to Romero that will have the jackass come out thinking everything had gone well and they had two hostages. He looks over to FF, “You ready for round two?” He asks.
“There isn’t a tap out option right?” FF asks and Andrew laughs at the joke.
Always cool under pressure it seems.
“No.”
“Then yeah, I guess just hit send.” FF says with a shrug.
Andrew does just that.

I was rereading the iconic reunion at baltimore and this came to me and I can't not write it (even though I have a half finished chapter waiting to be written for a fic for a whole different fandom but who cares right)
in which neil regrets realizes that the feds were on to something when they talked about witness protection program. brace yourselves, it's angst time bby. please bear with me, I don't write stuff like this, content and format wise.
so everyone knows what goes down in baltimore. everyone knows that famous college exy striker for the foxes neil josten has been the son of the butcher of baltimore all along, and that smth happened after he was kidnapped and tortured that resulted in the butcher and some associates to be killed. everyone knows that neil walked out alive, injured but alive. so when a few weeks, months later, associates of the butcher start getting raided and taken in custody, everyone knows exactly who opened his little mouth and revealed everything he knows (bc there's literally no one else who could know this stuff and would be willing to share with the fucking feds, no one has a death wish)
It's a slow process. It starts with the feeling of not being safe, which is ridiculous, because he hasn't been quite as safe as he is right now, with the foxes, his family, and most importantly with Andrew. They're on summer break, technically speaking, even if they're at campus for practice because they gotta train the new foxes. They're barely doing anything than hanging out together and training, but still Neil can't shake the feeling that something is wrong, that someone is watching him, but he doesn't say anything, because it doesn't make sense, he's just being paranoid, there's no need to panic.
Neil can swear he's being watched. He feels the dread whenever he's out of the dorm, when he's out running, when they go out to eat something, when they go to the mall, on their way to practice, at Eden's. But when he looks around there's no one looking, it's been weeks and nothing has happened, he hasn't seen anyone.
Neil can tell Andrew is growing suspicious of the way he checks out a place, the way his eyes trace every corner, every exit, because he's starting to fall back in old habits, and he knows Andrew hates it. But Andrew doesn't ask, he knows that Neil will speak when he feels ready, so he lets it go, even if he can't quite let got of the worry clawing at his heart.
But everything keeps going normally, things are fine, everything is fine fine fine. Neil doesn't talk about it, but it's fine really. Until it's not fine at all, but it's also too late to talk now because his head is fuzzy and throbbing, and he feels like he might throw up and he feels pain even if he's not sure where the pain is coming from. But he can't do anything now, he can't tell Andrew how he's been feeling dread for weeks, because a man whose name he doesn't even know but whose face is awfully familiar is standing right in front of him where he lies on the floor, and the situation is also awfully familiar.
Stop being a martyr. Oh Andrew would kill him. If Neil gets out of this alive, Andrew will kill him, because he left again. He didn't want to, he really didn't. He was out on a run while Andrew was in therapy with Bee and Aaron, a couple miles away from fox tower, when a car pulled up right in front of him, two men wearing hoods and sunglasses stepping out and standing in front of him. He came to a halt, trying his best to keep calm because who the hell were these men and what did they want and for fucks sake can this just stop? It would have been smart to turn around and try to get back to the tower but he can't ever keep his mouth shut can he?
"Look I don't know who you are, I don't care what you want, but you're in my way, so move away if you know what's best." He intended to go for more sarcastic, but he was doing his best not to panic, so that had to do.
"You're coming with us, get in the car, or we'll do this the hard way." Their voices said they wouldn't hesitate, but Neil laughed anyway, that smile he knew was the Butcher's resting on his lips. Anything to make the men leave. He opened his mouth and then- "The Minyard twins are at Dr. Dobson's office. Reynolds, Walker, and Wilds are at the mall. Hemmick, Boyd and Day are in the dorms. The newbies are at the dorms as well. Come with us the easy way and we'll let them walk out of their respective places alive, Nathaniel."
And he was fucked. Of course he hadn't been safe, he would never be safe. In fact no one he cared about would ever be safe. He should have known better. But he wasn't going to let the foxes be harmed.
"How do I know you won't kill them anyway?" The snark was gone, the smile vanished. His face was blank and dangerous, because he'd done this before. "I don't even know who you are, you're obviously not the big guys, and I don't remember seeing your faces."
"We don't want to attract unnecessary attention. All we care about is you. If you come, you spare us all the trouble. As for who we are, let's just say someone is pissed at the piece of shit that ruined everything."
"The Butcher's friends then. I can't argue with that, it's a habit of mine to fuck up. Ichirou won't be too happy if something happened." He played his strongest card but fuck it. The Moriyamas owed him protection, Ichirou himself had made a deal with him.
"The moment they turned their backs to the Wesninski and made a deal with Hatford, those Japanese shits mean nothing to us." These were desperate men apparently. If the Moriyamas were nothing, the FBI was even less. "Time is running Nathaniel, decide. You or them?"
Andrew would kill him, but they'd talked about it before. Neil had told Andrew. If it means losing you, then no. He would not put himself first. Hell, he'd told the others before, the Foxes were all he had, he wasn't going to risk them for himself, not for anything. He needed to keep them safe.
So now he's lying on the cold wooden floor of some house or shed or whatever, drowsy from whatever they drugged him with once he got in the car, and in pain after being beaten for the last hour or so. He didn't bother asking the man (who is obviously in charge and sent the two men) for a name, and honestly he still doesn't plan to. What was the point of that anyway? He just looks up at the cold brown eyes of the man standing over him, Neil's face as neutral as he could keep it despite the fear of not making it out alive threatening to pull him under. The man just stares at him, calculative eyes and cruel smile, and Neil can't take it.
"What, so you're just gonna stand there? I have better shit to do." He hears the slur in his voice, wonders if it's just the drugs or something else. A concussion is likely. He's met with silence, so he closes his eyes and lays his head down. Fuck he's tired of these situations. He truly will never be safe, no one will-
"You know, I was expecting so much more from you Nathaniel," the man says with a laugh, "I was told that you'd put up a fight, I thought this would be fun. They said you'd beg for your precious life, but you haven't even made an effort."
Whoever his source was, they definitely do not know Neil, or Nathaniel for that matter. Not only is he not going to risk the men hurting the others, but he isn't going to fight, not against so many of them, not when running would be more likely to get him out alive. He isn't going to let them know that. "First go fuck yourself, and second, this isn't remotely close to entertaining to what I've been through, maybe if it was more interesting."
What does Andrew say? Regret is worthless? It seems right, because he can't find regret in what he said, even if his face is a bloody mess (what's new?) and his body shakes with shivers, after his head is held underwater so many times. No, he doesn't regret it. Instead he finds himself laughing a hollow thing.
"Y'know at least others have had a point, this time it's just for the fun of it, and it's not being much fun." His voice cracks a couple times, hoarse from coughing up water.
"You're right though, it is for fun. You cost me absolutely everything Nathaniel. Did you know the feds and the Moriyamas have been after us for months? Hunting us like we're rabbits, all because you decided to be a dipshit and open your mouth. You should be dead. You should have died ten years ago, back in March, anytime. All your existence caused us is trouble. And ratting us to the feds wasn't enough was it? No you told Ichirou all of the Butcher's men were loose ends, too." The man took a deep breath, composing himself. "So yes Nathaniel, this is for fun. This is payback, you've cost many lives, this is retribution for speaking, and I'm gonna enjoy seeing you have fun for as long as I can."
At some point, after hours, he's left alone in the dark, in the cold. He knows he’s in pain. He’s pretty sure his arm is broken, and so are several ribs. He knows he should be in a lot of pain, but he's just numb. Regret is worthless. Because even if he feels even worse than how he felt last winter at Evermore, he doesn’t regret it. He can’t be sure the guy’s men were truly going to kill the Foxes, but he doesn’t regret coming here to make sure the others don’t suffer more than they already have because of him. He wonders if Andrew will forgive him. He didn’t leave proof that he didn’t want to leave this time. Would Andrew think he left them - him? God, he hopes not. Would Andrew look for Neil or leave it thinking that Neil wanted to leave?
It doesn’t really matter, though. Neil is so tired. This time isn’t like when he was on the run or when he went to Evermore or when Lola took him. While with the Ravens, Kevin knew he was there at least, if anything were to happen, a person would know where to look somehow. At Baltimore, several people knew the most likely place to find him; Uncle Stewart, the Hatfords, Kevin again. He has no idea of where he is, or who took him, and no one knows he’s been taken in the first place. No one will ever find him.
Maybe it’s better that way, he thinks. No one will have to deal with the burden of him or his disappearance or his death, because no one will know. The simple thing would be to assume he ran. He hopes they assume he ran. Maybe they’ll be hurt, but haven’t they been expecting him to run? They won’t make it to championships without him considering Jack is an awful striker, but Kevin will manage. Andrew - Andrew is the one who expects him to run the most, maybe he’ll take it nicely. Neil hopes he takes it nicely. Guilt blossoms among the nothingness in his chest, but he can’t take it back, and he doesn’t want to. It’s better this way. No one will find him, but that’s fine. He wonders what the Moriyamas will do. He doesn’t want to think about that. He thinks of Andrew, the kisses, the care, the love, the nights spent together. Thank you, you were amazing. He wishes he could tell him how much he cares one last time. He feels something wet slip down his face. He can’t tell if it’s water, blood or tears. He sighs. He thinks of Andrew, and his eyes slip close.

foxes + onesies (8/9)
based off of that one post i saw and don’t remember, where people once caught Allison wandering around Fox Tower in a giraffe onesie, and i absolutely melted for her. here is the Foxes’ journey to getting a onesie each!
Aaron
TW: mentions of hospitalization and drugs, implications of abuse, mental illness and murder
Aaron tries very hard
that phrase alone could very well sum up his existence
he tries to be a good student
he tries to be a good backliner
he tries to be a good teammate
he tries to be a good person
he tries to be a go- he tries to be a brother
he tries so, so hard
but life is harder
he’d tried being a good son, and failed
his mother was dead, and died hating him
he’d tried being a good boyfriend, and failed
Katelyn was gone, and left him crying
so Aaron was trying, and now?
he was trying to find himself, to grow, to heal…
which was very, very difficult when in counselling sessions with your just-as-traumatized twin brother
they’d both worked through Andrew and Neil’s non-relationship, and through Aaron and Katelyn’s fallout
Aaron had expected it to be the other way around
turns out that while he thought Katelyn deserved better, she thought he deserved better too
she had her own demons to deal with too, in the end
and so while everyone pretty much expected Aaron’s demons to be too big for Katelyn, it was hers that had been too much for the both of them
he couldn’t reach her, couldn’t get through to her, couldn’t help her
one fateful night, she had asked him, sobbing and breathless, to make the call
the call to take her away, the call to save her from herself
the paramedics had put her on a gurney, and they had said their goodbyes
I’m sorry Aaron… I’m so sorry, I wanted to be strong for you… I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I’m so scared… It hurts so much, Aaron… I’m sorry… Please take care of yourself, baby, please… I’m sorry…
she was wheeled away, and hadn’t seen her in a year since
they corresponded, though
4 months into her admission at a private psychiatric hospital, she had sent him a handwritten letter
she had told him about her routine, her new friendships, her therapists…
she’d told him about the work she was doing on herself, about the traumas she had been too ashamed to share with him…
after the fifth or sixth letter, Aaron had started responding
he never told anyone
until this week
he’d lost count of how many letters he’d received from her, and how many he’d sent her back
but this letter…
this one was different
this one broke his heart so much, that he walked out of his dorm, the letter still clutched in one hand, grabbed Andrew on his way out of Fox Tower, and made him drive to Betsy’s office
without a single word
Betsy was surprised, to say the least, to see Aaron entering first, distress in his eyes, and Andrew following close behind, clueless
Aaron handed Betsy the letter, sat down, elbows on his knees, head in his hands, eyes closed
Bee: Correct me if I’m wrong, Aaron, but from what I understand of the situation, you would like to share this with Andrew?
Aaron: And with you. Bee.
Bee: That is very generous of you Aaron. And brave. Would you like me to read the letter out loud?
Aaron nodded, never looking up
My dear Aaron,
What I’m about to tell you in this letter is very different from our usual correspondence. You know I’ve been working on things since the beginning of my hospitalization. Big things. Ugly things. But important things. And you are not a thing, Aaron, but you are important. You were forced to play a role in the mess that was my life, but that role saved me. From myself. You made the tough call, you took it upon yourself to protect me, even if it meant putting me away and losing me. Losing us.
I’m not so good with spoken words, and I feel safe here, in this bubble we’ve created for ourselves. But I would like you to believe me when I say that the words I’m about to tell you, I would repeat them to you outloud for the rest of my life if it could make amends for what I’ve put you through. One word from you and I would come in person to tell you how much I mean them.
I am grateful for you, Aaron Minyard.
I am eternally thankful that you have crossed the path of my life. You have helped me in more ways than you know, in more ways that I could possibly imagine. It’s so important that you know that, Aaron. It’s important to me, because you deserve to know, and you deserve the recognition. Because I know you don’t think much of yourself. Because I know you think this was all your fault. Because I know you, a little bit, at least. You did the best you could with what you had, and it was enough, Aaron. You cared for me when you didn’t have to, when you couldn’t, when you were going through it yourself, and I can’t thank you enough. But I can try. So here it is: Thank you, Aaron. Thank you. For everything. You were amazing.
However, there is another thing I need to say. A harder thing. But I must take responsibility for my actions, for both my sake and yours. You need to know. You need to know.
I am sorry, Aaron. I am sorry that you had to make that call. I am sorry that you had to witness my breakdown. I am sorry that I had to leave like that. I am sorry that I broke your heart. I am sorry for all the pain and hardship I’ve put you through. I am sorry for all the times I’ve lashed out at you, when really I wanted to lash out at my life. I am sorry for all the times I hurt you, when really I wanted to hurt myself. I am sorry that you had to watch me fall like that. I am sorry that you had to pick up the pieces alone, that you had to get back up alone. I am sorry for all the times I’ve said cruel things just to be mean and to hurt you, for all the grief I’ve caused you, all of it. This is my official, explicit, conscious and honest apology to you. I’m apologizing for all the wrongs I’ve done you, because it was my fault and you didn’t deserve any of it. I take full responsibility. And I am not expecting forgiveness in return. This is a no-strings-attached apology. I could apologize to you forever and still not be worthy of your forgiveness. So I won’t be waiting for it. I won’t be begging for it. This is all yours. I’m sorry, Aaron. I need you to know that. Because I know you think you deserve what happened, because I know you think it was all your fault. It wasn’t. It was mine. It is still mine. And know that I am not only apologizing in words. I will try everything in my power to make it up to you. Whatever it takes. I promise you that, Aaron.
Love,
Katelyn
as Betsy folded the letter, Aaron’s tears dripped down on the office carpet
Andrew was silent, eyes fixed on the piece of paper
Betsy waited a few minutes to let everyone soak in the moment
Bee: This is a very beautiful and heartfelt letter, Aaron. From what I understand, you and Katelyn have been writing letters since she “moved”?
Aaron nodded, still silently crying in his hands
Bee: Are your exchanges always like this?
Aaron shook his head
Bee: Okay, I see. Is this the first time a letter from her has made you cry?
another nod from Aaron
Bee: And why do you think that is?
Aaron: I don’t know…
his voice was rough from crying
Bee: Well, I think I might have an inkling, you tell me if it resonates with you. I believe, Aaron, that this is the first time someone has ever formally apologized to you, yeah? You are not someone that has grown up with that kind of care, that kind of responsibility. That kind of praise. I think you know that this is some kind of opportunity for closure, of course, but it goes deeper than that, doesn’t it? Someone cares for the wrongs they’ve done, for the hurt they’ve caused you. And you are not used to that. You are not used to being apologized to. You are not used to this type of kindness. Katelyn did not have to apologize and express her gratefulness. You didn’t expect her to. But she did. That means something to you, yeah?
Aaron’s heart broke a little more at that, before mending a little, too
he cried harder
and Andrew was watching all of this from his seat, seemingly unconcerned
he knew this wasn’t necessarily about him, that this was about Katelyn, and Aaron, and about showing Andrew that she didn’t deserve his hatred and his knives
but he did care
after he drove Aaron back to the dorms and told Kevin to watch his brother, he went for a drive
to think
he only came back once he had thought of something to do with Aaron
damn Josten for softening him
he threw Neil and Nicky out of their dorm, and went to retrieve the Stitch onesie from the back of his closet
he looked for the brand tag, looked it up online and made his purchase
he even paid for accelerated shipping
the day his order arrived, he went to the same convenience store where he’d found his precious DVD, and bought a stupid ugly postcard with a lighthouse on it
in a very neat handwriting, Andrew wrote what he had to say
he then went looking for his brother, but he didn’t have to look far
since that session with Bee, where Kevin was, Aaron usually was too
and Kevin was always at the court
but Andrew found them both sitting on the court’s floor, all geared up, yet watching something non Exy-related on Kevin’s phone
weird
that didn’t stop Andrew
he went back to the locker room, refusing to disturb the weird little thing that was going on there
he left the package and the postcard in Aaron’s locker, and left
a few hours later, as Kevin went to shower and Aaron opened his locker, Andrew’s gift was found
the postcard had slipped to the back of the locker, so Aaron retrieved the plastic bag and opened it first
he didn’t understand
it was a big, fluffy thing, bright yellow
what the fuck
it’s Pikachu
it’s a Pikachu onesie
it’s a fucking Pikachu onesie
what the fuck
he hadn’t thought about Pokemons since… well, since Tilda died
he had collected them, the cards, and the figurines
but he’d sold the toys for drug money
and he’d lost all his cards in the… accident
he’d left his three hundred-something card collection in the car, for some reason he couldn’t remember
but the crash had burnt and bloodied them all
when Nicky had adopted the twins, he had bought Aaron some new ones, but it didn’t compare… it couldn’t replace what he had lost
and now he was holding an adult-sized Pikachu one-piece pajama
he still couldn’t wrap his head around it when he found the postcard peeking from the back of his locker
he took it, his hand trembling terribly
he read the back
later, Kevin found Aaron sitting on the bench, still in his Exy uniform, smiling but crying
He’s so fucking stupid, Kevin, look at this shit
Kevin looked, indeed, at this shit
Kevin didn’t understand what he was looking at, but then Aaron handed him the postcard
Aaaron hadn’t told this story to anyone but Kevin, so he understood immediately what it said, and who wrote it
Kevin placed his big hand on the back of Aaron’s neck and squeezed a bit, an offer of comfort
he still didn’t understand what the yellow monstrosity was supposed to be, but he understood what it all meant
Aaron held the card closer to his heart than the onesie
everytime things became hard with Andrew, he wore Pikachu and he looked at the postcard
he focused on the little lighthouse, on the small, precise letters, on the ink of the pen
he focused on the words
Sorry I trashed your Pokemon cards

Posting here in its entirety now that it’s complete. Featuring the favors Neil used to get Andrew to go to Aaron’s wedding, Neil being a menace, and Andrew and Aaron talking, as well as Andrew submitting to the mortifying ordeal of being known.
Enjoy!
--
Andrew shut the door with his foot, letting his bag sit by the door for a minute. He knew Neil would call out his hypocrisy the moment he saw, considering their previous conflicts about what apartment etiquette entailed, but for now, what he didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him.
Walking into the kitchen, he set his keys down on the table and scratched at Sir’s chin where he was headbutting against his hand. He stopped when he saw something unfamiliar on the fridge and walked over to inspect. They weren’t the type to keep mementos or reminders there; the dark blue stood out against the bareness there.
In loopy script, it read: “Save the Date! October 21st. Aaron Minyard and Katelyn Winters”.
He began peeling it off the fridge. Neil had wanted him to see it, but there was no way. Just seeing their smiling faces made something surge up in his stomach. He had let Aaron go years ago, but he never said he had to be happy about it, and he certainly had said nothing about supporting Katelyn or their relationship, the same as Aaron had never said anything to Neil that wasn’t strictly required for Exy. He could tolerate talking to Aaron, more than he had when they’d been in the same state, but that didn’t mean they did things like this. Nicky’s wedding was bad enough.
“Oh, you found it.”
Andrew turned, determined to not give Neil the satisfaction of seeing that he’d startled him. The slight smirk told him he hadn’t succeeded, but he kept his face placid and unbothered. “So you put it there on purpose? I assumed it had been put there by mistake.”
“No. I put it there so I’d remember to put it on the calendar...eventually.”
“What for?” Andrew asked, tilting his head in mock confusion. Better to not give him the satisfaction..
Neil raised his eyebrow, a look of condescension that had Andrew’s hackles up. “Because I’m going? I assumed you would too, but I can go alone.”
It was true. Neil was an adult who could make his own choices and Andrew wouldn’t stop him from going. But somehow he doubted that Neil would leave it there. The very fact that Neil had taken the time to put it on the fridge meant that this was premeditated and that, likely, this was an argument he wasn’t going to win. That didn’t mean that Andrew didn’t intend to gain as much ground as he could.
“So eager to go play with your friends?”
“Our friends.”
“Presumptuous.”
“You’re right. Aaron will be there, considering it’s his wedding. So he would be just yours then.”
“Aaron is no longer my responsibility. He can fuck up his life however he wants.”
Neil leaned against the kitchen counter, staring back at Andrew with the same level stare. “What do you want for it?”
Andrew held himself against the weight of being known that well. He kept his voice casual. “Skipping ahead so soon? You haven’t appealed to the fact that he’s my brother yet.”
Neil huffed. “Wouldn’t work. I’ve already worked through all your arguments. Had about a week to practice.”
Andrew drummed his fingers on the table. It was unnerving, as always, to know that Neil knew him well enough to anticipate his arguments, to have already taken the time to work this through in his head. It was as irritating as it was calming, in a way only Neil could manage to be.  “You assume you have something worth that much to me.”
“Don’t I?”
“This conversation is starting to bore me. Get to the point.”
“I can sign the papers. One phone call and I’m transferred to Chicago. Same schedule, same weekends off. No more watching each other’s games on TV.”
Andrew worked his jaw. Neil’s status states away had been a source of more irritation than he wanted to admit. It had taken him a long time to be able to admit that Neil was a part of his life that was maybe permanent, as close to permanent as he could allow himself, and now that he had, he felt every mile like a slow healing bruise. Neil’s contract was due for renewal, but Andrew’s team conveniently needed a striker. No coach would turn down one of the best strikers in the game. It was the one thing worth saying yes to and Neil knew it.
“Yes or no?”
Andrew knew that Neil would drop it the moment Andrew said no. Neil didn’t pick fights he couldn’t win. He was only asking because he knew from the start Andrew would agree.
“I’ll go.”
Neil grinned, and moved closer, hovering his hand close to Andrew’s. Andrew took the next step and linked their fingers together. For once, Neil didn’t push his luck with some smartass comment, but Andrew could practically see him biting it back.
“What?”
“Nothing. I’m just glad you’ll be there.”
“Don’t say stupid shit,” he countered, pulling Neil in.
“Yes,” Neil said, before Andrew could ask.
He pressed him to the counter and kissed him, letting the invitation fall to the ground.
--
It takes another favor for Neil to convince him that threatening Katelyn at the wedding wasn’t worth the trouble. Andrew severely disagreed, but pushing the issue wasn’t worth it, when Neil would pull back on both their agreements if he did. He didn’t linger on what that meant, on the fact that somewhere along the way he’d decided that keeping Neil meant more to him than settling past scores, and more to him than his brother. He wasn’t sure if that was healthy or not, but healthy had never been in his lexicon either way.
Neil still looked like a disgruntled cat any time he had to wear a suit, but Andrew had picked out a nice fitting one for him years ago, and he takes a moment to appreciate his handiwork. Neil is oblivious as always, though, and it takes him about two minutes of trying to get his tie right until Andrew can’t take it anymore.
“Impossible,” he huffs, and moves closer to secure it properly. Neil grins down at him and Andrew still feels the urge to push his face away, not knowing what Neil finds there to look at. “Staring.”
“Says the man who was literally standing there for two whole minutes.” Not as oblivious then.
Andrew doesn’t dignify that with a response, turning with a hum and heading towards the door. He’s timed it so they’ll be just close enough to on time for the ceremony that they can slip in the back. He lets the hum of the highway drown out the tight feeling in his chest.
When they get there, there’s an annoying sign that says “We’re all family! Pick a seat, not a side!” and Andrew considers walking out, but Neil is swept up by Matt and carried away, so Andrew has to follow, despite his misgivings. Nowhere in their agreement did it state that Andrew had to pay attention to the ceremony, so he tunes out and recites some book he has memorized to himself instead.
It becomes painfully obvious at the reception that Neil is keeping an eye on him, so Andrew leaves him with Kevin, fighting over something inane and exy-related, and goes outside for a cigarette. He steps onto the terrace, only to find his brother leaning against a fence.
“I don’t think this is how weddings work,” he says as a greeting.
Aaron glances up, scowl as familiar as a mirror. “I told Katelyn I needed a minute.
Andrew nods and leans against the fence, taking a drag of his cigarette.
“Didn’t think you were going to come.”
“Thank Neil.”
“After you thank Katelyn. It was her idea to send you the invitation. I told her not to bother.”
“And yet here I am.”
“Here you are,” Aaron agrees, leaning further back against the fence.
Andrew lets the conversation drop for a moment. He’s about to head back inside, when he hears, “Why?”
He turns back. “Why what?”
“Why did you come? We both know Neil isn’t here as a favor to me. So why would he think it’s important for you to be here?”
And wasn’t that the million dollar question. Why had he bothered to come, when he and Aaron only spoke a handful of times a year?
“I don’t know,” he answers truthfully.
Annoyingly, Aaron scoffs. “Yes you do.”
“Enlighten me then,” he plays along.
Aaron shrugs. “I didn’t say I knew why. I just know that you don’t do anything without having some convoluted reason for it.”
“I didn’t know I was coming out here to have a conversation with the cheshire cat.”
Aaron chuckled and the sound was foreign to him. “We’re not 16 anymore. Hell, we’re not 20 anymore. We’re grown up.” He holds his glass up, toasting to nowhere.
“When did you start philosophizing? Andrew asked.
“It’s my wedding day-I’m allowed,” Aaron says, shaking his head.
“You’re so weird,” is all Andrew can think to say.
He looks at Aaron and wonders what he sees. Wonders if he mirror the relaxed posture, the way Aaron looks comfortable in his own skin. He wonders how long it’s been since he woke up screaming, if it’s a dull ache in the back of his mind, or an almost healed bruise, flaring up only when pressed on.
He hears the tell tale sound of heels on cobblestones. “Aaron? Honey, we’re about to cut the- oh.”
He looks up and sees Katelyn, wide-eyed and hesitant. He feels long forgotten anger well up, but thinks of Neil and pushes it down. With a long forgotten salute, he turns and leaves Aaron to his future.
Inside, Neil is leaning against a table, sipping his drink that Andrew can tell he hates. He takes it from him and downs it in a quick swig.
“That was mine,” he complains, nudging Andrew’s hip.
“You were too slow.”
“Everything okay?” he asks.
Andrew looks down at their hands, sees the newly acquired neat letters on the side of Neil’s thumb that match his own and feels something settle back into place. He looks up and past him to where Aaron is laughing while Katelyn puts whipped cream on his nose.
“Yes or no?” he asks instead.
Neil smirks. “In the middle of their moment?”
“Yes,” he taps Neil’s thumb, “Or no?”
“Yes, Andrew,” he says and pulls him in the rest of the way. He hears Nicky yell something and flips him off.
He’s okay.

Calling Home
Summary:
"What if Neil hid his phone where his kidnappers wouldn't find it? What if he called Andrew while on his way to Baltimore? What if Andrew had to listen, heart tearing in two, to Neil's journey into his father's basement?"
Andrew fishes his phone from his pocket, chest emptying himself of air when he sees Neil’s name flash across the display. His hands are shaking as he hits return call, shaking like they haven’t done since he went off his meds, and in many ways the lurch of loss in his gut feels like withdrawal.
He thinks the call is about to time out, when, suddenly, connection.
“Neil,” says Andrew, and it sounds dangerously close to a prayer.
Read here or on AO3
Andrew finds Neil’s rucksack and racquet four gates down from the one they left through. That’s when he knows – isn’t sure what he knows, but knows, because Neil would never willingly surrender his bag or racquet, would keep a white-knuckled grip on them even if the world were ending. It feels like the world is ending, and if it isn’t Andrew is going to end it himself, is going to rip and burn and tear and cut until there’s nothing left of this stupid hunk of rock. Neil is gone.
His phone buzzes in his back pocket. Andrew ignores it. He doesn’t have time to deal with Kevin or Renee or Nicky or anyone else pestering him about where he is and what he’s doing. Right now there’s only one thing on his mind, and that’s-
The buzzing stops.
It’s only as the call times out that Andrew snaps back to sense with a jolt. Neil’s phone wasn’t in his bag. Which meant he could have-
Andrew fishes his phone from his pocket, chest emptying himself of air when he sees Neil’s name flash across the display.
“Stop it,” Neil’s voice cracks over the phone, and in the black wash of memories that follows it takes Andrew a moment to realise that it isn’t him Neil is talking to. The voices are muffled as though reaching the mic through layers of fabric, and Andrew crushes the device against his ear. Most of the crowd has dispersed in the aftermath of the riot, but still he finds himself scanning the surroundings for somewhere quieter, somewhere he can listen, think-
“Stop me,” taunts a cool, female voice that has Andrew’s train of thought stalling in its tracks. “I told you to keep still, didn’t I?”
“Where are you taking me, Lola?” Neil says, loud and, in Andrew’s opinion, far, far too obvious. The bitch – Lola? – laughs. Andrew would thank Neil for giving him the name if he wasn’t determined to kill him for everything else.
“Where the fuck do you think? Daddy’s waiting. Speaking of which, I can’t take you to him with such a stain on your face. Rome?”
The image that springs to Andrew’s mind is inconceivable. Or, it would be, if he hadn’t lead the kind of life that provides plenty of material for a blackened imagination to work with. His feet are moving before he’s aware of it, and he’s biting his tongue to keep him from shouting Neil’s name down a phone where at best the sound would go unheard and at worst it would get Neil killed. The stadium grounds flash past, and something clicks on the other end of the line, followed by a breathless “You’re sick,” that turns Andrew’s blood to slush in his veins.
He’s jogging up to the team bus when Neil starts to scream. He stumbles, doubles over as though feeling the pain himself, and this time a noise that might have been Neil’s name slips through. Neil is making too much noise on the other end for the word to have made it through, but regardless a rush of fury has Andrew biting down on his cheek so hard he tastes blood.
He drops the bag and raquet as soon as he’s in range of the bus to slide a blade into his free hand. Nicky is the first to see him, staggers back from whatever he sees in Andrew’s face, mouth hanging open around an exclamation that never makes it past his lips. Noone is stupid enough to lay hands on him as he climbs onto the bus, and their questions go unheard. All Andrew can hear is screaming.
Abby is checking Kevin over when he reaches them, medical kit open at her side. Andrew shoves her from his path with the flat of his knuckles and she staggers back, diagnostic torch clattering to the floor. Kevin barely has time to look up before Andrew is throwing him up against the bus window.
“Tell me where Neil’s father is or I’ll slit your fucking throat,” Andrew says in a voice that isn’t his.
There are shouts behind him, someone get coach and don’t touch him and it’s Kevin, he won’t, will he?
Kevin’s eyes are glassy, but they sharpen as a gutteral noise buzzes through the phone still crushed to Andrew’s ear. It’s followed by gulping, frantic breathes, pained, but evidence, at least, that Neil isn’t dead.
“Is that-?”
Andrew presses the blade against Kevin’s throat. “Where is Neil’s father?”
Kevin goes white. “Prison.”
“Not anymore.” There’s that clicking again, and Andrew’s gut twists on reflex like some kind of fucking pavlovian reflex. This time he knows what to expect, but Kevin doesn’t, and he flinches as Neil’s scream echoes down the phone.
“Baltimore, then. He’s from Baltimore, he-”
“Renee,” Andrew says without looking away from Kevin. She’s right there behind him- he expected no less.
“Andrew.”
“I need a car. Something fast.”
He doesn’t have to turn to see the moment she shifts from Renee to Natalie: he can hear it in her answer. “I’ll be back.”
His brother throws himself into one of the seats as Andrew passes, as though he thinks he’s next on Andrew’s interrogation list. Andrew can’t blame him: he himself isn’t sure what he’s capable of right now, the knife in his hand twitching as though it has a mind of its own.
“Andrew,” Kevin says, “You can’t.”
He flips the knife in the palm of his hand as he hops the last step down from the bus. “Watch me.”
Neil’s voice on the end of the line has turned thin and scratchy like old sheets, garbling what sounds like she’s dead, she’s dead, I swear she’s dead.
“Do we believe him?”
“Might as well be sure.”
A scuffle, and Neil is screaming again. Andrew wants to join him.
Renee roars up to the bus at the same moment Wymack arrives at a brisk jog, presumably summoned by one of the well-meaning idiots hiding on the bus.
“Minyard-!” he yells, then his mouth drops open when he catches sight of Renee behind the wheel of a sleek, obnoxiously orange car. Maybe she stole it from one of their fans. “What in the flying fuck?”
“Andrew,” Nicky pleads, “Whatever’s going on, the police-”
“Half the police are his men,” Kevin says. “And he could buy off the rest if he wanted to.”
“Who?!”
“Nathan Wesninski. Head of the Baltimore crime family.” Kevin’s voice cracks. “Neil’s father.”
“Text Renee his address.” Andrew says, ignoring the reaction of his teammates as he pulls open the car’s passenger door. The glass is missing, due to the riot or Renee’s carjacking it’s hard to say.
The door doesn’t shut behind him when he pulls it, and when he looks up it’s Aaron’s hand blocking the way.
“Andrew.”
Andrew yanks at the door, but it won’t give. Neil is begging now. Begging like Andrew used to, and it’s working as well for Neil as it did for him. Whoever this Lola is, she’s going to die slowly.
“Let go,” Andrew grits through his teeth, not trusting himself to say more.
“What the fuck are you doing, Andrew? Are you going to try and kill a mob boss? You’ll die.”
“So?”
Aaron doesn’t answer, but his grip on the doorframe tightens. “I can’t…” he starts, chokes, starts again. “Don’t leave me.”
Andrew throws himself back out the car with violent speed, grabs Aaron by the collar before he can react. “You arent the only person I made a promise to.” Andrew grinds out through clenched teeth. “I intend to keep them both.”
Aaron’s eyes widen. At last he swallows, lets go of the door, and Andrew snaps it shut behind him before anyone else can intervene. Aaron’s face could be his own reflection, were it not for the absence of glass in the window and the absence of fear on Andrew’s face.
It’s only as they pull away from the stadium that Andrew remembers Neil called their deal off. Just that day. As though he knew.
If he thinks that will stop Andrew- fuck him.
They’re on the road with impressive speed – Andrew thought he was reckless, but Renee’s driving puts his own to shame. Horns blare and brakes screech as they merge onto the highway, but the roar of the engine not quite covering up Neil’s sobs echoing down the line.
Neil is crying. Torture, Andrew has no trouble imagining, but Neil crying…
“Faster,” he says. Renee accelerates.
Even at such alarming speeds, their progress is agonizingly slow. Renee is smart enough not to ask any questions, and Andrew leans away from the howl of air blasting through the broken window. There’s shuffling, the clicking of – handcuffs, he’d recognise that sound anywhere – and then Neil is talking. To pigs, by the sound of it, the shitty kind, the only kind, and he addresses them as though reading their names off their badges, loud and clear for Andrew’s ears. Andrew doesn’t need to make an effort to remember their names, but still he repeats the syllables with a bite that has Renee glancing his way.
“Do you have anything?” Andrew asks.
“A penknife. Nothing worthwhile in a real fight.”
“I’ll give you some of mine.”
Renee nods, fingers flexing around the wheel. If the prospect of death worries her, she doesn’t show it, gaze steady on the road ahead despite the furious roar of the car engine.
The rustle of fabric against fabric, and Andrew is biting back bile as-
“You could almost me my type if you weren’t so young, hmm? You look just like your father.”
Andrew doesn’t hear Neil’s response, his mind whiting out like television static. He doesn’t realise his blade is back in his hand until Renee leans over to bat at his fist. Blood leaks from his palm where his blade sliced it open.
“If you fight me, I’ll cut you off at the knees,” Lola hums in his ear. Andrew drops the knife to the footwell before he can damage himself any further, a swirling montage of horror hazing over him. He knows a viable threat when he hears one.
“Chloroform,” Neil says, then, “I can’t-”
Whatever he’s trying to tell Andrew is cut off, and the phone falls silent save for the faint sound of police sirens.
Andrew drops the phone into the footwell after the knife and punches the dashboard with everything he has. The plastic cracks under his fist, and he’s drawing back to take another swing when Renee slams the breaks, bringing the car to a gut-punching halt. Andrew’s seatbelt cuts into him as car horns blare furiously behind them.
“Keep going,” Andrew barks.
“You won’t be any use to him with a broken fist,” Renee answers, infuriatingly level.
“Keep going,” Andrew says once more, then, when it gets no reaction, “I won’t do it again.” He fishes the phone out from the clutter of magazines and takeout wrappers in the footwell and holds it like a promise.
Andrew thought Neil’s screams were the worst thing he had heard. But, as the following hour proves, his silence is much, much worse.
When the voices return, Andrew can tell by the echo that they’ve moved somewhere different. Tiled walls, if he had to guess, but beyond that, it could be anywhere. Muttered snatches of, where do you want him and dump him anywhere coming through with such dispassion that for a heart-stopping moment he thinks they’re talking about Neil’s corpse. But then the voices move off, and finally, a low, near-unrecognisable voice.
“Andrew.”
“Neil,” Andrew says, as though there’s any chance of Neil hearing him.
“I don’t know… I don’t know if the call connected. I hope it didn’t. I hope you didn’t have to hear…” Neil interrupts himself to hack up what sounds like half a lung. “I couldn’t hold it in. I’m sorry.” The plastic of Andrew’s phone casing cracks under the pressure of his grip. He barely notices Renee taking the exit from the highway.
“I don’t want to die a lie,” He continues, and Andrew has never hated him more for it. Will never hate anything or anyone as much as this for as long as he lives. “My name is Nathaniel Abram Wesninski. And I wasn’t thanking you for the game earlier. I was thanking you for the keys, the trust, the honesty, the kisses. I was thanking you for everything.”
Andrew stares ahead without seeing a thing. “No,” he whispers.
As though by some miracle he heard, the other end of the phone falls silent.
Then a door opens.
“Renee,” Andrew says urgently.
“We’re close.”
“Not close enough.”
“Hello, Junior.” A pause. A thud. A gasp of pain. “I said, hello.”
Neil’s voice – Andrew doesn’t care for Nathaniel, doesn’t care to let Neil slip from his grasp so easily – sounds as broken and terrified as Andrew has ever heard it. “Hello.”
“Look at me when I’m talking to you.” Neil’s father speaks with the same self-assured authority Luthor did, the same cool detatchment as Proust, the same subtle satisfaction as Drake. “Who told you that hiding in plain sight was a viable option? You had to know I would find you eventually.”
I did. The thought comes unbidden to Andrew, settling in his chest like a heartache that will choke him until he dies. Andrew doesn’t believe in regret, but this is as close as he’ll ever come. He didn’t know. He didn’t know Neil’s father was this. He wants to kill Neil for lying to him almost as much as he wants to kill himself for believing him.
“The only question that remains is how I’m going to kill you. I’ve had a couple of years to think it over but now I’m indecisive. I might skin you alive. I might take you apart one inch at a time and cauterize the wounds. I think no matter what I choose we are going to start by slicing the tendons in your legs.”
Metal scrapes against stone. There’s shouts, a clang, scuffling, a thump.
“Maybe we’ll do both,” Neil’s father continues. “Skin you an inch or two at a time and carve the flesh out from underneath. If we do it right, you might last all night.”
Andrew is thrown back to a crisp winter morning on a cold rooftop, surrounded by the smell of cigarette smoke and the icy burn of Neil’s eyes. I think about carving the skin from your body and hanging it out as a warning to every other fool who thinks he can stand in my way.
And what about the other ten percent of the time?
The answer doesn’t matter anymore. Andrew hit zero long ago.
“No,” Neil says.
“Lola, would you like the pleasure of crippling him?”
“Please,” says Neil. The word nearly stops Andrew’s heart. “Please don’t.” Then, “Andrew-”
And the line goes dead.
And something inside Andrew goes with it.
The phone hits the floor of the car with a distant thunk. Renee’s voice is white noise, syllables devoid of meaning.
“Keep going,” Andrew says.
The house is a hive of flashing lights when they arrive, police cars and ambulances and the flash-bulbs of photographers following the scent of blood. Bodies are being carried out on stretchers under white sheets, and Andrew tears through a police baricade like tissue paper.
Renee buys Andrew enough time to reach the nearest body, and the EMTs stumble back but can’t do anything to stop him without dropping the body. He hauls back a sheet, and his mind goes deadly blank as he sees piercing blue eyes, familiar auburn hair flecked with blood-
“Andrew?”
He turns.
Sitting in the ambulance at the bottom of the driveway, caked in bandages beyond recognition- but he would know that voice anywhere.
Andrew is lost.
Andrew is lost.
Andrew is found.
He flows to Neil like the river to the sea.
“You heard,” Neil whispers. There’s barely a part of him that’s safe to touch, so Andrew settles for the back of his neck, which is sticky with blood but otherwise untouched. “I’m sorry.”
“I’ll kill you,” Andrew replies, grip tightning, and Neil smiles, even though it must pain him to do so.
“Couldn’t let anyone else have the pleasure, could you?”
“Neil.” It’s as though every other word has flooded from his head at once.
Neil’s smile, already fragile, looks set to shatter. “My real name-”
“I don’t care.” The officers have made it past Renee, but they aren’t interfearing, which is good, because being arrested for assaulting an officer right now would be deeply inconvenient. And, because Andrew means what he says, he leans down and presses a kiss softer than he believed himself capable of to Neil’s lips.
Neil sucks in a breath, but not from pain, hands coming to rest on Andrew’s shoulders, too heavily bandaged to gain purchase. He pulls Andrew back in, and they kiss through the taste of blood and sweat and tears until there’s nothing left in his world but Neil.
“Neil Abram Josten,” Andrew repeats. It sounds like a prayer answered and a promise fulfilled.
Which it is.

Something Crazy About It by Han_veik28 (Not Rated | Incomplete | 12/15)
“Aaron, what the fuck?” Neil sat down at his desk. “Why would you hit me with-.” He stopped. “You’re not Aaron.” The blonde boy next to him turned and looked at Neil, tilting his head to the side. “Yes I am.” Neil shook his head. “No. You’re not.” The boy hummed with a small quirk of his lips. “Okay, say I’m not. One, who would I be, and two what would you do about it?”
An AU where Neil gets kidnapped at 14, his mom and dad both die then and he leaves his whole life behind to move to a small town called Palmetto with a family that consists of a new loving mother who will do anything in her power to keep him safe, a new father who acts tough but will always be there for him, and a new brother who befriends him immediately and shows him his new life will be amazing and finds love in a short blond who carries knives.

“I don’t want to bang him, Aaron,” Andrew snaps. “I want to take him on dates and hold his stupid hand and then bang him. Longterm. Monogamously. I want to be his boyfriend, I want him to be my boyfriend. I want to one day be Mr. Andrew Minyard-Dobson-Josten.”

Andrew and Aaron go weekly grocery shopping together
Here’s another one! I loved this as well, please I want to write more little things like this! Hope you enjoy Anon
I love the twinyards, they just need a little nudge to reach their full potential :3
———————————————————————
Aaron and Andrew didn’t talk about it. They didn’t sit down and plan it, didn’t communicate anything other than simple text of when, and then they did it.
It had been Bee’s suggestion, and not something either of them would have proposed themselves.
“It would be good for you to share short and necessary errands with a specific goal in mind” she had said with a soft smile that was only met with Aaron’s look of doubt and Andrew’s indifference.
Normally it was Nicky who did the grocery shopping, it had always been like that, and it had stayed that way.
Kevin was too busy with Exy and whatever monthly existential breakdown he’d succumbed to that week to do anything.
Aaron was a MED-student and athlete leaving little time for stuff like that, and Andrew was... well he was Andrew.
That and for the first long while of them going to college, he had been high as a kite and not allowed to drive anywhere.
Not even to the grocery store.
Which is where the Aaron found himself, pushing the wagon as Andrew carelessly threw stuff from the isles down into it, eyes never leaving the tiny list Nicky had handed them.
“Kevin’s gonna strangle you” Aaron broke the silence that had been suffocating him ever since they left Fox Tower.
Andrew had already placed three tubs of ice cream into the basket and was reaching for the fourth.
Slowly Andrew raised his eyes to meet Aaron’s own, and for a second Aaron thought he might have broken one of his brother’s stupid unspoken rules.
But Andrew didn’t seem angry at all, he never seemed anything now a days, but this was a different kind of nothing.
It was in the twist of his eye, slightly upward, he was fucking smug.
Slowly and deliberately, without breaking eye contact, Andrew let the fourth tub drop into the wagon.
“You’re Andrew Minyard!” The starting contest Aaron had been intend on winning was cut short by a high pitched child’s voice, making both the twins turn to look down.
A little girl was standing there, dark hair a mess and bright eyes so wide It looked like they might pop out.
Andrew tensed beside Aaron but didn’t answer, the girl didn’t seem to notice or care all that much.
You are so cool!” She shrieked, jumping slightly where she stood “your game against the Ravens was legendary! You totally beat their ass!” She giggled, it sounded like bells.
“Andrew” Aaron hissed when his brother seemed to be doing nothing.
“Can I have your autograph? Pretty please?” There it was, every single alarm bell went off in Aaron’s head.
Body moving before he thought, he got ready to stop Andrew from murdering a 10 year old by the ice cream section, but that proved unnecessary.
Andrew slid down into a squad, making himself a couple centimeters shorter than the girl, who could only look at him as if he was gods gift to earth.
“Sure” Andrew answered simply, reaching for her book.
She scrambled through her back pack, almost dropping the notebook with how enthusiastically she pulled it out.
Andrew caught it before it could hit the floor, taking the pen she offered and signed it before handing it back to her.
“Thank you so much mr. Minyard! This is the coolest thing ever! She exclaimed “I’ll keep watching all the games! My friends aren’t gonna believe this!” She hugged the notebook close to her and in that moment Aaron decided to turn his gaze on his brother.
Andrew seemed... content? Another word he wouldn’t associate with his worse half, but the only one he could come up with to describe what he was seeing.
It made something tingle somewhere in him. He pushed it down enough to punch the wagon forward, nudging Andrew soft enough that it would make him fall over, but hard enough to gain his attention.
Andrew got up from his half seated position on the floor, still looking at the girl.
“Gabriella?” Somewhere a frantic woman’s voice called and the girl spun around on her heel.
“That’s my mom, goodbye mr. Minyard! Thank you!” And then she was gone in the crowd.
They spend the rest of the trip in silence, Aaron trying to banish the picture of Andrew’s features softening when he sat down in front of the girl.
He didn’t like to think of his brother as a human like anyone else. If he had to use any descriptors for his brother it would be the uncanny valley.
Something that lived, breathed and paraded as a human, but something was just off enough to make one doubt.
It was stuff like what had happened at Thanksgiving, when Josten went missing and now this little girl, that reminded him that his brother was human. And that terrified him.
The trail was in two months, and Aaron had done his best to keep the thoughts of it as far away as possible, but how could he ever forget, when Andrew did stuff like this.
Had emotions that could be other than apathy and rage. Aaron didn’t know how to interact with that Andrew.
It also pissed him off endlessly.
All these random things and people that waltzed in and out of their life, sometimes even ruining it, could make his brother feel, but Aaron couldn’t? What had he done that made him different?
“Does Katelyn want kids?” The question comes out of nowhere when they reach Fox Tower and Aaron goes for the bags in the trunk while Andrew lights a cigarette.
“I don’t know” Aaron answered honestly, it wasn’t something they’d talked about yet, and wouldn’t be for many years if ever.
“Hm” Andrew hummed and took a drag “do you?” He continued.
Once again Aaron didn’t know what to respond. Did he want kids? He didn’t know. At first thought the answer was, no, absolutely not.
He knew that the cycle of abuse was hard to break, and if he wanted to be healthy enough to have a kid, he had a lot of work to do. And even then, Katelyn and him would have to talk about it for a while.
However the longer he thought about it, the more doubtful he became of his initial definitive no.
“I don’t know” the long period of silence that had been left between the question and the answer spoke volumes and Andrew blew out another smoke cloud.
Aaron left then, up with the elevator and into their dorms to put the things away.
Maybe These shopping trips wouldn’t be that bad.

Hmm might send more abt other characters if I feel like it
Thank you anon I love a chance to rant about these two idiots endlessly <3
1. Like/dislike about the character
Aaron: he’s genuinely such a complex character and I think that’s what drew me to him initially like this boy has so much going on but desperately pretends like he doesn’t
Kevin: he is canonically a fucking bitch and I can’t help but love that
2. Favorite canon thing
Aaron: I think right now all of his commentary in the first book is my favorite canon thing about him like he’s such a snarky asshole. Like genuinely the scene where Neil pours the water on the ground and then throws the glass at Aaron and Aaron just goes “mature” lives rent free in my head forever and always
Kevin: “I’ve never been skiing before” and then immediately having a panic attack
3. Least favorite thing
Aaron: internalized homophobia womp womp
Kevin: dating a Raven womp womp (i don’t hate Thea literally at all I just don’t like that he stays with another Raven but that is my opinion)
4. Them in a different pieces of media
Aaron: this is most definitely recency bias but The Maze Runner bc he would fit in with those assholes too well (him and gally would be besties)
Kevin: Harry Potter/the marauders feels like the right answer but it also feels lame as fuck (I can also see him in the maze runner as well)
6. Something you have in common with this character
Aaron: Scorpio <3
Kevin: I am also a little bitch sometimes
7. Favorite fanon thing
(Me trying to remember what’s canon and what’s fanon)
Aaron: him with a lip ring and also being a little skater boy
Kevin: the similarities between him and Wymack for sure
8. Least favorite fanon thing
Aaron: I will never stand for aaron micheal minyard hate
Kevin: and I will never stand for kevin day hate either
(I just don’t get how you could hate these assholes like yes they suck that’s the whole point)
9. Could you be roommates with them?
Aaron: maybe I don’t think we’d talk to each other and idk if I could handle that
Kevin: tbh yeah probably
10. Would you be best friends with them?
Aaron: I think we’d be acquaintances at best
Kevin: absolutely not
11. Would you date them?
Aaron: yeah I think whatever he did to swoon Katelyn would work on me as well
Kevin: I would have a raging crush on him but I could not stand his personality irl (I say that with all of the peace and love)
12. My headcanons for them
Aaron: he has terrible circulation and is always cold and has chronic migraines (this is me projecting) and he is a chronic clothing stealer when it comes to his partners clothes (cough cough kevin)
Kevin: he always tries to sign with team in or near cities where the other foxes are located because he doesn’t know how to function without being near his people (cough cough aaron)
13. An emoji that represents them/one they would use frequently
Aaron: 🤓/😐 or 🥱 (he is bored with you !!!)
Kevin: 🫠/🙂 (he doesn’t know it’s passive aggressive at first but uses it excessively after finding out)
14. A fashion aesthetic for them
Aaron: he will always have an early 2000s skater boy aesthetic to me
Kevin: elevated basic featuring a lot of PSU and USC merch
15. Favorite ship for this character
(I don’t even know if I have to say it)
Aaron & Kevin: kevaaron forever and always
16. Least favorite ship with these characters
Aaron: idk honestly I feel like I don’t see many Aaron ships outside kateaaron and kevaaron (I’m pretty sure andrew/aaron exists out there somewhere and I’m choosing to ignore it for my own peace bc hate is not a strong enough work)
Kevin: Kevin/Riko
17. Ship with them I don’t hate but don’t mind
Aaron: Aaron/Jean like I see the vision I just cannot get behind it
Kevin: Kevin/Robin like I don’t mind it at all I just also do not get it but I also don’t know anything about Robin
19. Their canon relationships I don’t like
Aaron: I do like kateaaron and that’s the only canon Aaron relationship (unless I’m dumb and have forgotten but oh well)
Kevin: Kevin/Thea I am so sorry I cannot rally behind you
20. Ideal best friend for this character
Aaron: MATT MOTHERFUCKIN BOYD BABY
Kevin: Andrew and Neil are perfect
I also think they would be very good friends if they gave each other a chance and got to know each far away from Exy bc I think they’d get along and have a lot in common but they have such varying opinions on the thing most of their lives revolve around
22. What I like/don’t like in fics about these characters
Aaron: I don’t like when he blindly hates the other foxes (especially Neil and Andrew) in post-canon fics like his relationships with them are complicated but not blind hate and I love when he’s competitive and also I love when writers delve into his past addiction and trauma and let him heal
Kevin: I love love love to see him get to be nerdy or talk about his other interests outside of Exy and I don’t like when he is like a crazy health nut womp womp
23. Favorite picture (fanart) of this character
Aaron: this art altered my brain chemistry to the fullest extent of that phrase
Kevin: this one and this one tbh even though I don’t really ship kevneil
24. What characters from my other fandoms do they remind me of
Aaron: regulus black
Kevin: maybe remus lupin idk kevin day you are an anomaly my little disaster boy
25. My first impression vs now
Aaron: I was really fucking confused by the Twinyard switch the first time and now he is my fucking baby live laugh Aaron Minyard
Kevin: I thought he was the love interest for most of the first book until I looked up andriel LMAO and now he is babygirl and I love him so much (even more so after reading TSC)
Thank you again for letting me rant about these stupid little idiots I adore <3

Some days I think about Aaron minyard and about the fact that the aftg fandom gives him so much shit about going back on his deal with Andrew, or being a drug addict in the past and making that his only personality trait in fanfics, or going on and on about the fact that he doesn’t understand Andrew and maybe he doesn’t but
aaron understands Andrew when Andrew gets that flash of panic in his eye followed by a not quite there look before it goes his face goes blank because Aaron definitely has at least a little bit of ptsd bc who and I kidding the kid was beat, brainwashed/groomed his whole life, and had his mom get him addicted to drugs so he definitely has some ptsd like even as he’s older seeing a little blond kid all bruised up after the little dude fell out of a tree at the hospital to check out his broken arm definitely triggers him because all he can see is himself or Andrew all alone in the kids hazel eyes
but what really gets him is closing the bathroom door to the Colombia house (i can’t remember if it’s tilda’s house or the Colombia house they detox him in) and he always has to have it propped open to were he can tell he’s able to get out or he has to have something between the door and the frame to keep it from closing all the way if someone tries to slam it, him and Andrew are exact opposites when it comes to this
I know the bathroom door thing will bother him from personal experience because I had to sit outside my best friends room when she closes it to change or whatever because she was locked in her room once while going through withdrawals from Xanax cut with fentanyl and she can’t have her door closed or if it is closed you have to promise to let her out/promise you won’t lock it which takes me to my next point aaron makes Andrew sit outside the bathroom door when he needs it closed because in his words ‘you fucked this up for me so you have to deal with it’ and Andrew is just like ‘Yes I will keep my brother safe even if it’s from his head’ bc even tho Andrew is a little fucking shit he’s still a good brother and I live by that
but also the monsters are basically all teen boys so they aren’t going to be painting bathroom doors just bc of some scratches on it so aaron has to look at where he scratched off the paint of the door trying to get out of the bathroom while he was going through his withdrawals and it makes him like physically ill to look at the door and it’s never repainted until Neil is like ‘yo aaron hates the bathroom door. Why?’ And one day Aaron catches Andrew with a quart of paint spot covering the door in the twins 2nd year one night they’re at the Colombia house
This is like all over the place but yea the cold turkey detox thing sucks, ik from personal experience and that was just from nicotine and prescriptions I didn’t have a weening plan for, Aaron was on opioids/whatever his mom had around the house which means whatever he was on was definitely cut with other drugs like fentanyl or meth or whatever the dealer could mix with the pills and repress them to maximize profit and since aaron/his mom were buying off the streets poor dude was definitely coming off of multiple drugs at once and his body must have been fighting so hard
And like I wasn’t even locked up imagine being locked in a cold ass bathroom while you’re having the worst however many days it takes to flush the drugs out of it system through just throwing up and sweating it out yk
So I think Aaron has rights to be resentful towards Andrew for his rehab methods :/ bc it would leave a damaging physiological impact on anyone but esp a previously abused druggie teen.
I have lots of opinions on Aaron and I hate how he gets 0 redemption ark at all. Neil ‘hates’ him which is why we don’t see the good side of him but like we know neils a unreliable narrator like jeez I’m so tired of Aaron just being the butt of the joke in every situation just because the unreliable narrator with an attitude problem told y’all that Aaron sucks ://

The Friendship I never knew I needed
Okay, new headcanon time because I read a post about Aaron and Neil begrudging friendship, and now this thing won’t leave my brain. It sorta grew legs and kept on going, sorry. Featuring twinyard forced bonding, Neil being an asshole and Katelyn being sneaky.
Okay, so we know that Neil doesn’t really care for Katelyn. But like, sometime in Neil’s 3’rd year and the girls have left him he shows up to one of his maths classes and like, Katelyn is there??
Katelyn is super smart as well as athletic, the whole deal. And one time one of her TA’s were like, okay this class might actually challenge you, but won’t take up all of your time. Might be fun.
And Katelyn is like, alright imma try.
The first two weeks Katelyn doesn’t even notice she shares the class with Neil, it is that big.
When she does though, it’s because the professor is writing a thing on the board (it’s early, I don’t wanna do actual maths rn), slightly incorrect, and she really wants to point it out, but also doesn’t wanna be rude and affect her grade.
Neil doesn’t have such worries and just sorta not quite yell but loudly points it out... might’ve used a cuss word or two as well, whoops
Katelyn was like thank god someone said something, she was sat clinching all muscles not to say anything.
Then she clocks who said it and was like, huh, I might do something about this. He is someday gonna be my family so might as well start wearing him down now, instead of later.
Also, perfect excuse to actually start up a conversation, sharing a class.
So a couple of weeks after that, when Katelyn has had some time to think, and Neil thinks he’s safe, she strikes.
They are appointed some homework, and she has positioned herself so she can see Neils face in the lecture hall (without it being obvious) and Neil’s eyebrow pinch the tiniest bit together. Now is the time.
She gently approaches him a little sheepish, “could we maybe form a little study group for this class? I don’t really know anyone here, and I don’t really understand the concept for this bit”
Neil, a little suspicious but also completely lost on this subject “would you be able to meet in the library on Tuesdays at 4?”
She says yes of course and dances a bit internally.
The first like, 3 study sessions are completely awkward and stilted, but somehow they work really well together academically? Who knew?
It’s in the fourth meet-up that the ice breaks. Katelyn arrives a bit winded, with a half of cup of coffee and just starts to enthusiastically rant about this complete asshole who cut in line at the coffee place, and then the girl who tripped her on the way into the building but wouldn’t apologize and they got in an argument and then so on about every bad thing for the past week
And Neil is just hooked on her rant. He is reminded a bit of Dan and her ranting about sexist assholes in sports and he really misses her, but why should that stop him from making new friends?
So he stops fighting it and actually talks to the girl. Turns out, they have a lot in common. Including complaining about their significant Minyard. They love them, but oh my lord are they petty and annoying.
From there on out, Tuesdays becomes their hang out day. Even when the semesters over and they don’t have that class anymore. Just Katelyn and Neil becoming unlikely best friends (sorry Matt, it wasn’t on purpose), and telling each other everything. She is the first one outside of the foxes to see his scars.
She didn’t flinch. But she quietly seethes for days afterwards. Aaron tipped him off by complaining about Katelyns bad mood to Kevin (not that he cared) and he overheard it. They had a talk and only grew tighter.
Fast forward like, a year and a half, and Aaron really wanna meet this person. And Katelyn really wants her bf and bff to have a bond as well, but considering all of the bitching she hears about Josten this and Josten that, she had taking to keep referring to Neil as that person I meet in this class, or her nickname for Neil (it’s buggy, because he keeps on bugging her with more maths) to keep the peace.
Also, gender-neutral terms to keep the jealousy at bay. He’s not that bad, but better safe than sorry. Neil means a lot to her now.
But finally she snaps; “fine, you can meet buggy. But only if they agree to meet you too”
“Why wouldn’t they agree to meet your boyfriend?”
“You’re annoying, and I complain about you a lot.”
“You what?”
Anywayyyys.
Neil of course agrees, but only if he can bring Andrew as well. “He’ll play nice, I promise! No knives or hairpulling”
Aaron is really excited to finally meet Buggy. They really mean a lot to Katelyn and makes her happy. And who makes her happy, make him happy too
Andrew is very curious about Neil’s supposed new best friend. Turns out, Neil also hasn’t disclosed exactly who it is, but Andrew hasn’t outright asked him about it so.. It’s his own fault, really
The meeting goes a little like this:
Neil and Katelyn is at their weekly hangout, this time at a coffee shop around campus, and both text their S.M(significant Minyard) where to meet up. Andrew arrives first and just stands in the doorway when he catches sight of the twin redheads sitting and laughing about something. Neither has noticed him yet
Debating just walking out again, he hears a soft but earnest “are you fucking kidding me”
Turns out Aaron was just as surprised and lowkey mindfucked. They catch each other’s eyes and have their first mental conversation
“Well shit, now we have get along with each other’s S.R’s (significant redhead). Also did you know? No? Thank god I wasn’t the only one”
Katelyn turns around as her Aaron senses has gone off, and spies the twins just looking at each other totally defeated. Then turning to Neil like,
“Did you not tell Andrew about me? Because he is doing the same face Aaron is currently doing, and I didn’t tell him exactly who he was meeting today other than my best friend”
“Whoops, might’ve forgotten. They look kinda emotionally constipated... For how long do you think Aaron is gonna complain about it’s me?”
“Two weeks at least, how about Andrew with me?”
“He’s just gonna passive aggressively stare at me with snide comments every now and then until I buy him a tub of ice cream in apology. I give it 6 months for Aaron to laugh at I joke I made without making that face afterwards”
“You’re on, it’s gonna take him 9 at least”
It took 5 and a half months, and 2 years for Katelyn to get Andrew to huff his version of a laugh at all.
Just, Neil and Katelyn being besties and forcing the twinyards to accept and maybe even like each others S.R’s whilst also getting a better relationship out of it. Also; Aaron is now cursed into saying buggy instead of Josten or Neil, and he hates it. Until he doesn’t of course.

An fanfic where Neil starded working for the Hatfords after his mom died but he is already dating Andrew and join the foxes anyway
so, andrew and neil meet in juvie when neil was like 14
he stayed there for 3 or 4months while his mother worked some things out
and there he bonded with andrew, told him some trues (he was 14 he was not thar good at keeping secrets yet) , they make a deal, a lot of drama etc etc
and then he has to break out from the place and andrew is like
" i'm going with you"
"no, you're not"
"yes, i am"
andrew can be fucking stubborn so yeah he goes with neil
(he already knows about aaron is a way to put more distance between them)
mary is pissed off, but andrew knows to much and she was not about to kill him
and she sees the way that andrew protect neil so in the end andrew stays with them
is not like someone will put real effort in looking for a foster kid
so she shows andrew how to use a knife (I think she didn't stop teaching neil, is a too valuable habilit)
and also a gun, and i have a headcanon that Andrew is just awful with it, and neil loves to make fun of him
anyway, they protect each other, kill some people, fall in love, learns russian, spar together, normal teenager stuffs
mary does not know, andrew doesn't like her but he doesn't kill her because he knows she is the only reason neil is still alive
they started dating after a year since they meet, so neil was 15 and andrew 16
idk neils/nathaniels age makes me confuse
also, andrew convinces neil to play exy without she knowing
(btw i forgot to mention neil was stefan when thet meet and alex when seattle happens)
and well like a just said Seattle happens
and after that neil can't just keep running, he won't be responsible for Andrew death as well
sooo, yep he calls stuart
Stuart tells them all the moriyamas bullshit, etc etc
they go to the FBI, neils is officially neil abraam josten, Andrew becames andrew minyard etc
after that andrew goes to live with aaron and Neil goes to england, it was safer that way for both of them
STUART KILLS NATHAN/LOLA YEAHH
continuing, they keep dating, long distance and all, andrew goes to england every month at least and do little jobs for neil's family
neil only do some translation works and he is pretty good at making deals (the irony) so he deals with a lot of other mobs family's and is like a lot people think he should become head of the family but that's a long history
anyway, all the canon shit with Andrew happens the same way, Tilda, Nicky, he turning down the ravens and he join the foxes
but he has some Hatford people watching over him so he doesn't beat all those man alone and doesn't take his meds (just needs to see a therapist for a couple of years)
even with all the Mafia shit neil still plays exy and he is better than he is in canon since he have been practicing with andrew for a few years (and also he spars with andrew so hr is a wayyyy better fighter and he also uses the knifes cause of andrew insistence and again all the mafia shit)
anyway, the Hatfords know about them but Andrew's family/the foxes (same thing, no?) doesn't
they come with a plan to take down the moriyamas and i have that in my head but don't know how to explain
but neils deals with a lot of mafia family's right? so like if the moriyamas kill him the Hatfords and idk the chinese as well will take revenge, and the moriyamas would loose since they are dealing with a war in japan and kengo is in hospital, nathan is dead etc etc
so, too much trouble to kill neil, so neil makes a peace offer with ichirou that while he is in the eau he won't kill him or the other foxes
so like, if rikos touches them he will be carving his own grave, and thats the whole point, cause Kevin's hand proven that riko's doesn't have any self control so the fucking plan is making riko angry
and we all know how good neil is at this, andrew is not happy
so yeah, neil needs to join some exy team and of course he will join the foxes because his bf right
NOW EVERYONE FINDING OUT ABOUT NEIL
because like, they are together for years, and not as much hurt as they are in canon, they didn't feel the need to tell anyone but they also doesn't care to hide and yes they hold hand in public and things like this
now neil only come on the same day the upperclassmen return cause there was no need for him to come early
so, like a hour before the reunion in the lounge andrew is like hey everybody in the car now or you're walking
and everyone is like ???? especially when andrew makes kevin go in the backseat
and he goes to the airport and nobody understands nothing, until neil comes
and he just completely ignores everyone im the backseat (yes even Kevin) and looks at andrew >that way< and andrew is a man in love, so he leans and gives neil a quick kiss and neil smiles at him and with a fucking soft voice says "hey baby"
andrew did not blush
anyway they started driving and andrew has his hand on neils leg and aaron, nicky and kevin are just fucking shook, they have no reaction at all, no words nothing because WTF
so when neils turns and says "hey guys, i'm neil" and is meet with three shocked faces staring at him he is trying so hard not to laugh and just goes "are you all okay"
nicky's is the first to recover and well... nicky... "ANDREW, WTF, YOU HAVE A BOYFRIEND, WHY DIDN'T U TOLD US, WHAT ABOUT REENE, WHAT"
andrew ignores him and turns on the radio, neil lights a cigarette and they start talking in russian
aaron doesn't say a word
anyway, neils fly was a little late so they're the last ones at the stadium
so when they enter the lounge and andrew is waking with some scary dude (because yeah neil can be pretty and scary) and when they sit in the sofa with thights to shoulders touching everyone is like what the fucking hell
aaron and nicky find some other place to sit, neil does some remark and they start talking in russian and yeah they don't know if they should ignore or no
until dan breaks the spell by asking since when andrew speaking russian and andrew just look at her completely bored until neil answers her
after that wymack (which as always is so fucking done) asks if they have some more languages to show off or if they could start
they both deadpan "yes there is" but are ignored
anyway during the reunion some try to ask questions but wymack stops them and neil and andrew just glare at the person and that's enough to make they shut up
until Aaron makes some shitty remark about both of them in german and neil goes to protective mood and roast aaron in the same language
nicky has to stop aaron from punching Neil (and andrew won the bet he made with Stuart about someone trying to punch neil before neil punches someone
and again wymack is so done
and then they break the news about the ravens coming south
which andrew and neil already know because Hatfords
andrew is still pissed off at kevin
and then neils says (on purpose) something about the moriyamas and everyone is staring at him like????
and the he just smile a little >that smile< and says "you really don't remember me kevin"
he wasn't wearing contacts or anything like that so Kevin's recognizes him
it's caos
but i'm to tired to keep writing sorry

it is a personal belief of mine that a shared taste of music helps bridge the gap between aaron and neil (well that, time and the grudging realization that they're part of a shared family and would make a v powerful duo within it)
like all the foxes have different music tastes but neil doesn't really listen to music until everything settles down
i mean homie didn't even have a phone until he came to psu
so naturally the other foxes heavily influence what he listens to
matt and allison (who have the best music tastes because yes) set him up w a spotify and make him a couple of playlists and he starts to branch out a bit
and then one day he's talking to nicky and matt about music and he mentions a song that he heard and liked
nicky offhandedly goes "oh aaron listens to them all the time"
aaron, who has been working on schoolwork some ways away, has not been following the conversation but lifts his head up at the sound of his name "huh?"
and nicky explains that neil just said he likes a song by that artist you always listen to
and Aaron is very affronted because his music is v important to him and this is neil (who he is only barely coming around to tolerating for andrews sake because he and his brother are trying damn it) who just LikEs one of aarons favourite songs
but nobody else listens to that kind of music and aaron simply must explain to him the delicate initiation process of getting into such an artist
anyway they end up talking about music a little bit and Aaron grudgingly suggests other songs and matt and nicky are there which helps the conversation a little bit
("grudgingly" basically sums up their entire relationship growth process because they're both stubborn assholes)
it happens very very slowly but they begin to talk to each other more, almost always with some mediator between them
aaron eventually shares one of his playlists with neil they both refuse to acknowledge it as a Step
then aaron introduces neil to records and neil is enthralled, much to the chagrin of the other foxes because headphones, josten. ever heard of them?
one day they walk through the doorway to neil and the others suite and nicky's mouth drops, kevin falters on his way to the kitchen and even andrews eyebrows raise
not only because they look like they just spent time together but they're chatting... almost as if they were... friends and neil looks quietly pleased and is holding a package as he leads aaron into the room
kevin and nicky actually do a double take to make sure andrew is in fact sitting on their couch and not walking into their room because there's no way neil would act like that with aaron
neil greets the room casually enough and nicky responds with an "um.. hi" while kevin just looks between the two of them
neither neil nor aaron seem to recognize their shock (this isn't new to them) and are more focused on unpackaging the box neil is holding
turns out they went to a thrift store and bought neil a record player
nicky looks like he's going to explode at this point but for once recognizes not to say anything because he doesn't know how fragile this could be and neil looks happy and aaron looks pleased so he chokes back his questions and remarks
after that, every once in a while aaron will just walk into neil's room where neil's doing homework/watching tv/etc and wordlessly slap a new record on the table
he tries to hide it but if you look closely you can see the smug look on neil's face the first time he catches a snippet of a song he suggested playing when aaron took off his headphones (cause you know aaron stays BLASTING that shit)
and it's still a bit slow and they don't acknowledge it but anyone can tell that they're different, that it's better
and the foxes are all happy to see it because neil and aaron are two of the most intense out of them (which is saying something) and nobody really thought they'd get over their animosity but it pulls them all closer
it shows how much when the two of them manage to persuade all seven other foxes, who were not shy in expressing their dislike of that kind of music, to go to a concert together
to be honest, when the others saw them as a united front it didn't really take much "persuasion" but aaron and neil don't need to know that
months into it aaron confesses that what he said to neil during the foxes first vacation was a test
neil turns this over and considers getting annoyed with aaron for thinking he needed to be tested but he is familiar with the difficult ways of the twins and their protection so instead he just grumbles something along the lines of "you couldn't just stick with the normal break-his-heart-ill-break-your-face.. you minyards and your flair for the drama"
neil starts going to aaron for help with his schoolwork when he's afraid of his grades slipping
down the line, they go gift shopping for the other foxes together because that's the only way either of them manage even vaguely acceptable gifts
and they're not always kind with each other because they don't need to be but they're foxes and they're family and they both know it

Hello! I don’t really use this account a whole lot but I wanted to go ahead and make a pinned post, which I’ll hopefully remember to update frequently lol. Anyways, here’s a collection of the fics I’ve written for aftg, andreil, and others so far ^^
progress comes in small steps series [complete]
and we’re just starting to get it [Rated T, 11.1k]
Neil is nothing and everything all at once, the entire universe for Andrew, however small of a universe that is. Even Aaron is starting to see it, though the pieces still don't line up.
And Andrew is trying to convince Aaron that he's never jealous? Yeah right. You don't spend your entire life being denied, being hurt, going through foster care with nothing to call your own only to be okay with someone else trying to take the one bright piece of life you call yours.
Or, Aaron is done with Andrew's shit and makes it his job to prove his brother wrong.
there’s always more to learn [Rated T, 12.3k]
The subject of Katelyn and Neil hasn't felt like dangerous territory in a long time, but Aaron feels the bomb countdown already coming to an end before Bee even opens her mouth.
"Well, the two of them are so alike," Bee goes on, oblivious to the tension leaking into the space. Her smile is pleasant, teasing. "It just goes to show how you and Andrew have similar tastes despite being so different."
The world freezes on its axis.
Andrew inhales a little too loudly the same time Aaron chokes on his spit. "W-What?"
trust is a slow process [Rated T, 7.3k]
If Katelyn had been stealthier, she could've escaped the crowded dance floor without Andrew seeing her.
But of course, she's no Neil.
Or: Katelyn and Andrew spend some unwanted quality time together, and Katelyn sees things for what they are.
someday there won’t be scowls [Rated T, 8.1k]
Neil finds that even with his mind's best efforts to hang onto the wounds of the past, his opinion of Aaron just isn't what it used to be. He can thank Andrew and Katelyn for a lot of it, but his own observations certainly help.
When he sees Aaron like this, the mix of worry and adoration on his face as he thinks of Katelyn, Neil can't help but feel too exposed himself.
It's a start.
I want this touch to be familiar [Rated E, 38.1k]
Deep down, Andrew knew he would always reach this crossroads, a time where the thought became too strong to ignore.
Going all the way with Neil. It's not something he can continue to avoid thinking about. When Andrew looks back to the days where he held Neil's hands down, when he never got off with him in the same room, he's forced to acknowledge how much he's allowed.
Not allowed. Welcomed. Wanted.
But that’s not all there is to it, and the desire to make a decision finally makes itself known.
if magic exists, you’re the closest thing [Rated T, 16.2k]
The concept of love is not one Andrew understands.
For a long time, it escaped him. It's always fuzzy, always distorted. He'd given up on it long ago, so why is he still chasing answers?
Whatever the reason, he's content to blame Jean Moreau for a lot of things, Katelyn too.
It's their fault he's here, at the happiest place on earth.
this red is for you [Rated T, 10.8k]
Katelyn never considered herself capable of doling out violence.
It has always been a far away thought, dampened by college courses and late night dates with her boyfriend. She lives a stereotypical life, despite everything she's been through with Aaron. Aside from her growing connection with the notoriously troublesome Foxes, nothing much about her life has changed.
Even then, she's learning she's still able to surprise herself. When Katelyn witnesses Neil defending Andrew, her own protective rage rears its head, ready to be explored.
And maybe that's a good thing.
an unconventional crossing [Rated T, 8.1k]
Aaron likes to believe he and Andrew have a lot more practice navigating their conversations now. And he’s right, mostly. But sometimes, challenges arise at the strangest times, and especially when their significant others are concerned.
In which Andrew and Aaron run into each other at the grocery store, and choose not to part ways.
the roads I traveled with you [Rated T, 35.5k]
When his brother gets engaged, Aaron doesn't expect it to send his head spinning as much as it does. Marriage has always felt like a dream, or a nightmare, one he never thought either of them would be able to achieve.
In that moment, Aaron remembers what he's always known, what keeps his head above water. He wants to be with Katelyn forever. That's never been a question. But marriage hadn't been brought up. For so long it was this abstract concept, a fantasy. He'd always reasoned with himself that it would happen, rationally of course it would, but now...
Now Andrew has made the idea a reality, and Aaron has to confront his own wants for his future.
one shots/multichapters
I’ve had a love of my own [Rated T, ongoing]
Despite everything Neil could’ve imagined for his life, he never thought he’d be here, finally giving the world the interview they’ve always wanted.
It’s been decades, but even with his numerous accolades and sports wins, he finds that they’re the least important thing about his life.
Neil can’t help but laugh. Andrew would be so annoyed if he were here.
Of course, Neil only wants to talk about him, and the life they spent together.
slurred [Rated M, 1.6k]
They're not the type of people to give up control, but with each other they're willing to bend the rules.
growing pains [Rated T, 10.6k]
Stuart knows it’s perfectly normal for teenagers to have crushes. That’s why he’s not surprised in the slightest when Neil starts acting strange; lighter, happier. However, what he doesn’t expect is for the crush to leak into his everyday life—or literally take up residence in his house. Or: five times Stuart knew Neil was hiding a nighttime guest, and one time he actually met him.
your hands are mine to hold [Rated E, 6.7k]
It has taken a long time for Thea to accept a lot of aspects of their past. Her eyes track the fear in Kevin's eyes, emboldened by how his own resolve wears it away year by year. She'll never take that sight for granted.
It's hard to ignore the weights on both of them, with their lives so eaten up by the Exy world and memories of the Nest, but one thing has always remained consistent.
Thea trusts Kevin Day with her everything, and she'll never hesitate to follow him into battle.
better than a night light [Rated T, 7.3k]
Neil hasn’t had the chance to examine the feeling of fear in a long time. He’s all too familiar with it though; from the nightmares, to the memories of a cold basement floor, he knows the feeling like the back of his hand.
But this fear is new, loaded with ridiculousness and a complete lack of reason. It’s nothing more than pixels on a screen, far away theories that can’t hurt him like his past can.
Maybe that’s why he’s beginning to not mind it as much. It doesn’t hurt that Andrew is also there to hold him through it.
Playtime [Rated E, 6.7k]
There was a time when Andrew might've questioned being so into this.
Not anymore.
take what you want [Rated E, 5.4k]
Laila has come a long way from her freshman year, past all the worries and pressure to behave a certain way. She never thought she’d realize it here, lounging poolside with her girlfriend.
The urge to seduce Alvarez is just too good to let go.
a product of absence [Rated T, 7.8k]
It’s funny, Andrew thinks, that this would be seen as a curse in any other situation. Two people, thrown apart by time and circumstances, desperately searching for one another.
But Andrew has never doubted Neil’s return. He’s not running, he’s not worried. It’s perhaps the only waiting game that’s been worth it, that he understands, because this bond with Neil has only ever made sense to him.
In another life, Neil made this much clear: they would always find each other in the end.
here I am, there you go again [Rated T, 17.5k]
There's many things about the past Neil chooses to leave behind, and most of the time it's for the best. For some reason though, his brain can't help but cling to the last memories of him.
"My Ex." Neil bites his tongue at the word, because it never feels right. At this point, so many years later, that man is no one. A stranger. He shouldn't presume to know him anymore than his ex should presume to know Neil.
If he remembers Neil at all.
But Neil should know better than anyone that the past always has a way of catching up to him, and this time, he's not as willing to run as he might've initially thought.
losing battle [Rated M, 3.4k]
It's always been Nicky's dream to be closer with his cousins. However, when he opens Andrew's mail to find more than he bargained for, he finds himself regretting the wish. Unfortunately, no matter how much Andrew's warmed up to him in the last few years, Nicky's pretty sure he'll die (literally) if Andrew finds out.
Nicky's mission begins.
temper, temper [Rated T, 3.7k]
"You paid for the deluxe package," Neil says as he scrolls through his payment history to find his client's invoice. His system is simple:
Basic Package: Fuck you. A general statement of displeasure and a brief description of the wrongdoing.
Intermediate Package: Fuck you, with passion. Everything in the basic package, but with additional insults. Customizable for an extra fee.
Deluxe Package: Fuck you to hell. Everything from the first two packages, for an extended period of time, and with extra viciousness.
And it looks like Andrew Minyard is the unlucky soul today.
a new contract [Rated T, 7.2k]
Neil’s request is simple on its face, but infinitely complicated given his history.
“Convince your team to sign me.”
And this was Andrew’s deal: If Neil can prove that he’s serious, that he can build a new life for himself so that he doesn’t end up crawling back to Riko, Andrew will convince his coach to recommend him for recruitment in the fall.
Yes, it was meant to be black and white…
But Andrew should’ve known better. Nothing ever is.
What a Rush [Rated E, 1.6k]
It's always Andrew's goal to stretch Neil's pleasure to its limits, and he's barely begun to scratch the surface.
locked together [Rated E, 8.3k]
Andrew licks his lips and tugs on the tail of the beast inside him, righting it so it can point him in the direction of what he's searching for. Neil looks good on top of him, panting and giddy, and it's rare that Andrew doesn't want to flip them over and make Neil fall apart.
But...every once in a while...
Well, he's relaxed today. He wants to listen, he wants orders, he wants to be controlled so long as the control comes from Neil.
do you like scary movies? [Rated T, 22.5k]
To say Andrew has never seen the benefit in the make-believe would be a lie. However, he finds less and less use for it as he grows older. He especially fails to see the benefits of anything from the horror genre; he’s made plenty of his own mistakes, has seen more than enough to terrify him in his life. He doesn’t need to rely on jump scares and idiotic protagonists.
But when he meets Neil, self-proclaimed horror archivist, he finds that maybe he never gave the genre the credit it was due, and he ends up thanking the dull movies eventually…
They lead him to Neil, the realest thing he’s ever known.

au where andrew and aaron are wymack’s sons
okay tilda USED to be less of a disaster
like in canon, wymack doesn’t know he has kids. he and tilda split up only a few weeks after she got pregnant, so he was long gone by the time she even knew. it’s not like they were exclusive, either. while it’s a gut punch to learn andrew and aaron’s last name, and what happened to their mother, he figures they can’t be his.
of course, andrew and aaron don’t know either. but you know who does? riko, and by extension kevin
riko’s goal in recruiting andrew is a lot more specific now. instead of just ‘get a really good goalkeeper with a reputation’, it’s ‘get the really good goalkeeper with a reputation so he doesn’t sign with the foxes’.
of course, knowing wymack was their father would probably make the twinyards less inclined to sign with him, not more, but riko doesn’t know that. he doesn’t know them very well at all, and andrew has decided to keep it that way
(riko’s fatal mistake, again, is not recruiting aaron as well. if he had tried, then maybe andrew would have agreed-- or not. if he had tried to recruit nicky too, he probably would have stood a decent chance.)
wymack recruits andrew, aaron, and nicky, with absolutely no idea that he’s related to them, and they accept. riko gnashes his teeth.
he does so even more once they play the foxes that year. the ravens win, of course they do, but andrew aims shots at riko’s head, when he can. just a little reminder to that thick skull that andrew minyard personally dislikes him (as opposed to the general apathy he treats the rest of the population with)
when kevin runs to the foxes after the winter banquet, it’s not because wymack is his dad, because he’s not. it’s because wymack managed to snatch the minyards right out from under riko’s nose and keep them away from him, and if he can do that, then maybe he can keep kevin safe too
(he does. wymack wouldn’t be able to bear otherwise.)
and for a while, that’s how it stays. for a long time, actually. the year goes on. neil gets recruited, and the foxes’ futures start to look up. seth dies and andrew gets sent to easthaven and they look down again, and neil goes to evermore for winter break, and riko does not reveal anything. he bides his time.
(when wymack comes to get neil from the airport, neil is struck by how big wymack is. he’s not that tall-- he’s not short, but kevin and nicky and matt are all taller than him-- but he’s strong and sturdy.)
kevin, who knows the secret about wymack and the twins, has already catalogued all the similarities he can find between them. he’s had a lot of time to do so.
the reveal doesn’t happen until the final game. riko waits until he’s close enough to andrew to score, then right as he’s lining up his shot, he says, ‘you know, i was surprised when you signed with daddy dearest over there.’
andrew doesn’t dignify that with a response. if riko wants to play mind games, he can do so by himself. he does do his best to aim the ball at riko’s ankle. it ricochets off the wall, though, because riko is one of the few players good enough that andrew actually has to try to control the ball around him.
riko figures maybe he didn’t get through to andrew, or maybe andrew’s just obtuse, so that’s what he starts with next time he’s within earshot. ‘oh, didn’t you know wymack’s your dad? how does he feel about that car crash of yours?’
andrew grits his teeth, but he stays the course. he doesn’t need riko yelling about family history to aaron next, because aaron might hit him and then who knows what’ll happen. they can’t afford to lose a player.
that surprises him-- because what does he care how the game ends? but it matters, because to take riko out, they need to beat him at his own game, literally.
andrew does pick up on riko saying something to kevin before the next serve, and kevin stealing worried looks at andrew for the next five minutes.
well, then.
they make it through the game. andrew hisses at the other foxes to keep riko away from aaron, and for once, they don’t ask questions.
and they win.
andrew breaks riko’s arm, and then he says, calmly like he hasn’t spent the past twenty minutes contemplating it, ‘hm, at least my dad wants me.’ because he doesn’t know if riko is telling the truth (and he plans to find out from kevin), but he does know it would be an absolutely devastating comment, and andrew is all in favor of those.
and he also knows, without a shadow of a doubt, that wymack wants him, at least on the foxes if not in wymack’s personal life. wymack signed him and has dealt with all his shit and has bought him expensive whiskey in exchange for playing like he means it. wymack wants him around, which is more than riko can say about his father.
when they get off the court, andrew lets neil lean on him, but he finds kevin and asks, ‘what did he say to you?’
kevin looks at neil, exhausted but alert, and then at aaron over by the vixens, and then at wymack, and then finally back at andrew, and andrew has his answer. ‘so it’s true.’ and kevin nods.
and andrew decides he’s going to deal with that later. right now, he’s tired, and he wants to talk to bee before doing anything, just to figure out what to do, and at the moment kevin needs to go away and andrew needs to find a place to sit down because his legs are tired and neil, for all his running at ass o’clock in the morning, is too exhausted to even ask prying questions.
so he turns and walks out of that conversation, and neil follows, and andrew feels ready to eat ice cream and play video games for a week without a single mention of exy.
he doesn’t need to tell kevin to keep aaron in the dark for now, he’s pretty sure. kevin wouldn’t do something so instigating without a kick in the ass, and with aaron staying with matt now, there are way fewer chances for it to just slip out.
he talks to bee, and he talks to neil, and their methods are incredibly different but their suggestions are, funnily enough, the same. neil would probably be mortified to hear that revelation so andrew is saving it for a rainy day.
so he follows their advice, and he tells aaron, and aaron kicks a chair over but then he just stares at andrew for a second and then goes into his room and slams the door behind him. sulking is fine. aaron sulks, and then he gets over it, or at least fit to be in public again. this is something andrew knows about him. and he waits, and eventually aaron texts him a simple ‘what are we going to do’
and that’s how they find themselves driving to wymack’s the next saturday, music blasting in the car, but isn’t it funny how andrew can still hear the silence between them?
they’re better than they used to be, which is how andrew knows that this silence is something they both need, to steel themselves for the conversation they’re about to have. he parks the car, and turns off the radio, and they sit there for at least a minute before aaron says, ‘no deals. we tell him and that’s it.’
‘that sounds like a deal,’ andrew points out, just to be a shit, and aaron rolls his eyes at him but says, ‘no new deals with wymack. we don’t need one. he’s already got our contracts and you’re off your meds.’ and andrew agrees.
they get out of the car together, and they walk up to wymack’s apartment together, and aaron knocks before andrew can get his keys out but honestly, now that he thinks about it, aaron’s probably right. wymack should know they’re here and make the decision to let them in.
he does, and he raises an eyebrow when he sees who it is, but he doesn’t comment on them knocking because maybe he can feel the heaviness in the air, and he closes the door behind them and says, ‘what?’
that’s something andrew appreciates about wymack. he’s direct. which is why andrew says, ‘so did you know you’re our father, or did tilda keep that a secret too?’
wymack’s face drains of color and aaron says, ‘andrew,’ but he leaves it at that.
they stay at wymack’s for a long time, and andrew nabs a bottle of whiskey before they go, just to make sure wymack knows that he’s still the same person. if he really cared he’d get a lock for his liquor cabinet.
when they’re in the car, before they leave, aaron says, ‘what do we say to the rest of the team?’
andrew honestly hadn’t considered that. bee and neil and aaron and wymack and kevin all know, which is already a lot of people. probably nicky will have to be told at some point, and so will abby. he’s going to tell renee at some point. does it matter if the others know?
he voices that aloud, and aaron says, ‘i don’t know, but wymack might appreciate not having to keep it a secret.’ and that’s true. so they decide, because they’re both assholes, to wait for dan’s next full team mandatory bonding night
(wymack, still up in his apartment, is upset. not because of what they told him but of what it means-- if tilda had just told him, or if they’d split up a few weeks later, then he could have taken the twins, he absolutely would have taken the twins, and he could have prevented so much of the darkness in their lives. and it hurts, too, to know that tilda herself was responsible for a lot of that darkness. but that’s not what happened. and he’s pragmatic. he’s tried to help them ever since they signed with him and he doesn’t know how much success he’s had but they are doing better now than they were. he can try to keep that going, and he will keep that going. they deserve that.)
the mandatory bonding night happens a week later, everything is going great, occasionally people are raising eyebrows at how long andrew is staying because usually he leaves as soon as possible but whatever, and then kevin gets up and says he’s going to bed and like they planned (the plan was to wait until right before the first person leaves, so they can get everyone at once and also scatter), aaron immediately goes hey, kevin, wait, one last thing
and kevin is very, very prepared for this to be something stupid and/or incomprehensible, but he waits, and aaron says, ‘i just thought you should know that since wymack’s me and andrew’s dad that means you’re not the only son of exy anymore’
there’s a two second pause while people register what he said and then everyone loses their SHIT. allison is shrieking, nicky is just running around the room from person to person yelling in their faces, neil is laughing his ass off, dan looks like she really isn’t sure whether to believe him or not, and matt’s just kinda catatonic
eventually, dan decides to believe them and let it go. she doesn’t know the details, but their relationships with each other, the team, and wymack have all improved over the last year. if she gets in their faces right now about being assholes (as much as she wants to do just that), all their progress might be ruined.
and then andrew (and aaron, once he catches on) spends an entire practice calling wymack ‘male ancestor’ and dan figures they’ll be alright
she’s proved right later on, as the twins don’t take that long to get used to the idea of someone who’s already proved he’s on their side over and over being a part of their crafted family. it’s unorthodox and andrew definitely continues to steal alcohol but wymack locks the liquor cabinet and gives him a copy of the key, which seems like a completely futile exercise but keys are important, and keys given by someone else are even more important.
