what i think people are missing about derol in glass onion is that he is played by noah segan. the same guy who played trooper wagner in the first knives out movie. and i for one, think noah should continue to play goofy little characters in the rest of the knives out movies. not anything to do with the mystery, not a potential killer or anything, just a goofy little guy living his best life, fangirling over his fave mystery author and getting high as hell on a billionaires greek island. good for him.

Trailer
When high school misfits Rickie and JT decide to ditch school and find themselves lost in the crumbling facility of a nearby abandoned hospital, they come face-to-face with a gruesome discovery: a body of a woman - stripped naked, chained to a table and covered in plastic - and soon realize she is anything but dead. Quickly the boys find themselves embarking on a twisted yet poignant journey testing the limits of their friendship, and forces both to decide just how far they're willing to stretch their understanding of right and wrong.
Pre-order Deadgirl.

I love how in the Glass Onion we are introduced to all the characters on the island and then we have Derol, who is described just as 'a random guy passing for a tough phase and is there', like Miles said we don't need to care about him. Which is very strange and suspicious given the circumstances. But then throughout the movie we simply forget about him and end up he really is just what we were told, just a random guy.

KNIVES OUT 2019
Yeah, I killed Fran, but I guess I didn’t. So what do you have on me? Nothing. What, attempted murder? I get arson for the building and a few other charges. With a good lawyer, which I have, I’ll be out in no time. And then you’ll see just how much hell I can wreak on your life, you vicious little bitch.

If I might posit a theory in the Knives Out universe:
Tumblr media
This is the same actor. He has appeared in both Knives Out, as Trooper Wagner, and in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, as Derol.
Now what if they're not only the same actor, but the same character, too? That Derol is also Trooper Derol Wagner - well, ex-trooper, actually. At this point in the story.
Because my theory is that sometime between Knives Out and Glass Onion (KO & GO), Wagner was fired from his job as a trooper, and being an old friend of Miles or maybe his cousin, Miles invites him to stay on his island until he can get back up on his feet.
And while there he realizes island life suits him and we see him go from the smartly dressed, clean cut trooper in the first movie to the laid-back, beach crawling stoner in the second movie. It might explain why he doesn't notice Miles's obvioius nefarious intentions (as well as also being on that golden teat) but also why he minds his own business - he sees Blanc and realizes he should keep to himself because whatever is going on, he's gonna handle it.
I would love it if, when he and Blanc were watching the house go up in flames at the end, Derol was like "I remember you from the Harlan case" and they reconnect over that (and maybe Blanc invites Derol to his apartment until he gets on his feet again, for real, because his free ride with Miles is definitely over).
This actor is definitely gonna be in the third so I would definitely love it if it's all connected instead of just repeated cameos.
