[Haircare during Edo period], handy illustration by Sayuri Sasai.
As time went, Edo hairstyles became more and more intricated. Hairdos were set using plenty of styling products, like 梳き油 sukiabura (creamy pomade) or 付け油 tsukeabura (solid pomade). Many recipes existed, varying in bases (like 椿油 tsubakiabura/camellia oil, 菜種油nataneabura/canola oil, 木蝋 mokurô/sumac wax etc.) and fragrances used.
Once set, hairstyles did not fell apart easily, but the oils used meant hair easily caught dust or dander - hence why people used tenugui or other kinds of hoods to protect their hair (see those past notes 1 / 2):
Tumblr media
In the past, washing one's hair was usually done once or twice per month (in the meantime, to relieve itchy scalp, people often used hairpins to scratch without unraveling hairdo!).
Dirt and wax were washed off using hot water and shampoo made from dried 布海苔 funori (a type of red algae) and うどん粉 udonko (wheat flour). You can see here an attempt at recreating the mix.
Then, hair was allowed to dry naturally (taking care of not catching a cold in freezing weather!).

Do Hangyoku ever wear Hikizuri. If they do, how come and when do they wear them? It'd be lovely if you could maybe make a post about how Hangyoku's appearance changes on seniority! :3
There's three Hanamachi where I've seen where Hangyoku wear Hikizuri: - in Hakata/Fukuoka (not sure what the occasion is) - in Mukojima/Tokyo for Mukojima Odori, if their role requires it - and in Kagurazaka/Tokyo, this year the current only Hangyoku wore a Maiko Hikizuri for Setsubun There's some cases outside of Kyoto where apprentice Geisha wear Hikizuri on a more regular level, but they call themselves "Maiko". As for how Hangyoku's appearance changes with seniority - that's actually very simple. A transition in little details from junior to senior like in Kyoto doesn't happen, mostly there's no difference at all. However, there's two exceptions: In Mukojima, around half a year before her Erikae, Hangyoku's wig hairstyle changes from Momoware to Yuiwata. She will no longer have her own hair styled (junior Hangyoku in Mukojima usually do both - own hair Nihongami and Katsura) and wear simpler Kanzashi than before (for example, Katsuyama Kanzashi gets exchanged for a Kushi).
Tumblr media
In Kagurazaka, in the last year of apprenticeship, Hangyoku's hairstyle changes to Yuiwata and her Haneri is mostly white.

You commit a faux pas at your wedding, but look at how handsome he appears today — how can you not?
Nanami x Reader
Tags: pre-canon, she/her pronouns, marraige, breaking tradition (NOT appropriate behavior tho i don't condone it in irl situations💀), religious sacrilege??, familial pressure, fluff
Tumblr media
You and Nanami had a traditional wedding.
Unfortunately, it wasn't a choice you made all on your own.
It wasn't as if you necessarily wanted a hybrid or Western-style wedding, but you never had the chance to decide in the first place. It would've been so simple if you were just two people in love, but you two weren't just ordinary joined souls, but jujutsu sorcerers.
And as a lead member of a prolific jujutsu clan, it wasn't just your wedding, but theirs — everyone's. Tonight wasn't just for you and Kento to become one, nor was it only for your close families to unite, but for the entirety of jujutsu society to observe. They could threaten your position as a sorcerer as they pleased, but it was a new matter when Kento was at risk as well.
Every jujutsu higher-up had to be there to officiate, pray, and bless you two as a couple, and every prominent clan had to be there. (Unfortunately for Nanami, that also meant the Gojo clan.)
You tried to think of the positives initially: you had access to one of the most beautiful shrines you had ever seen in your life, one that was hidden away only for those in jujutsu society for hundreds of years. All expenses would be taken care of.
Also, at the end of the day, you were going to get married to the love of your life: Nanami Kento.
That was already the highest blessing that you could ask for.
You were already considered lucky by the women in every single clan— your marriage could have been arranged. Gojo himself was a product of an arranged marriage, as well as almost every member of the Zen'in clan. Yet here you were crying when you were marrying for love.
However, you were constricted by your own lack of agency. You couldn't choose your wedding dress — you weren't allowed to wear one. Your wedding date was chosen by one of the higher-ups. You wouldn't be able to kiss, or hug, or be affectionate for the entirety of the rites. People like Zen'in Naoya had to be invited while the individuals that you wanted to see like Shoko couldn't come until after the main ceremony.
On late nights when the curtains were wide, allowing the city's nightlife to illuminate your room, you and Kento used to whisper, believing that one day when the cherry blossoms fell, he'd be the one to weave a single braid in your hairstyle on your wedding day, or have a hand in tying one of the knots.
It would've meant the world: a representation of how he helped you get ready then, and how he'd pamper you now — until the rest of your lives. Now it was being taken from you.
All the things of beauty that you admired: the lavish bridal nihongami, the intricate shiromuku, suddenly weighed heavy on your heart.
Kento was always on your side. Privately, he brought up to you that you two could elope. The higher-ups couldn't take over your wedding if there was no wedding to control.
It sounded so tempting. However, this wasn't just your wedding, but Kento's. He would never say it out of worry of pressuring you. For as straight-laced of a man that he appeared to outsiders, you knew how sentimental he was, and how much he valued a ceremony that would bind you two from now on to eternity.
In all the aspects of your wedding that you could control, Nanami thrived. Although your future husband didn't show it with smiles or exuberant words, you could tell just how excited he was to plan things like the reception's menu, taking care to include things like seabream and red rice to wish for your prosperity as a couple. He called up restaurants and caterers from far and wide, bringing you to samplings nearly every week, trying to fuse some common dishes with some of his favorite French, Portuguese, and many other restaurants.
He personally designed the invitations, ordered all of the wedding favors with you.
You couldn't steal it from him. Even if you two eloped now and tried to postpone the ceremony, the elders would always be there.
Didn't you already have the most important thing?
Oh, and you adored the man you would be marrying, you thought. The stylist carefully laid down several sets of kanzashi beside you. You were set to get ready for the next nine hours.
Fine. You looked at your reflection in the mirror. The elders can have this one day.
As long as you have your man for the rest of your life.
Tumblr media
It smelled like pollen on your wedding day. Inhaling deeply, the shrine's courtyard was covered in sakura pedals, shining dappled light upon you and Kento.
Hair raised on the back of your neck when the shrine masters began to play their shinobue and fue, signaling your and Nanami's descent from the courtyard into the main pavilion.
The high sound reverberated deep into your eardrums, making the clicks of your sandals fall deaf to your ears. This loss — lack displaced you from the present, as if you were never really there. As if you were a ghost under this cold spring when one of your older relatives held the ornate oil-paper umbrella plastered with several jujutsu talismans over your and your groom's heads, shielding you from whatever remnants of the sun were left.
You couldn't see him, not even from the corner of your eye when you were hidden by the bridal headdress. However, Nanami Kento was a yours. The nerves in your heart stirred alarms in his head, calling out to him.
Your right hand cradled the folds of your kimono, lifting it up and holding it to your body while your groom held his hands at his side, with a folding fan in one palm.
You felt the ends of your large sleeve being tugged, pulling you closer. Your breath hitched when you felt that moment again. Eyes darting to the crowd around your escort, the Zen'ins, the Inumakis, all those that your elders deemed as important enough to attend were surrounding you on both sides.
But with how your groom called out to you silently, it gave your heart wings, did it not?
Your proper groom, you thought, who followed protocol and listened to what was right more than any other sorcerer you knew, toeing the line — just to hold your hand.
Quickly and daringly, you quickly switched your right hand with your left, even as you had to awkwardly stretch it over your torso to tuck your hand under the hulking fold. You dropped your hand to your side for your knuckles to brush across layers of silk until you were finally skin-to-skin with Kento's own large hand.
Hidden by a sea of heavy fabric, bones cautiously knocked into each other, skin meeting gently across pads of fingers, and inching closer for your hands to knit —
Smack!
Teeth gritting, you and Kento quickly dropped your hands and separated.
"Have some shame," your relative muttered from behind your ear.
Rolling your eyes, you were finally glad that your glare was hidden under your wataboshi.
Tumblr media
In all honesty, you couldn't focus much after that.
The remaining rites were a blur in your mind. When the students asked you years down the line what your wedding was like, you honestly told them you couldn't remember much of it. (The honeymoon was much more memorable, you would tease.)
You returned to earth as Utahime stood in front of you and your groom seated before her. Giving you a stern nod, she handed your groom his first cup with two hands. When he took it with a nod, she held the golden pot in her hand and poured Kento the first cup of sake.
Turning your head toward him, it was as if the veil lifted. The ends of your headdress finally revealed the marvel in front of you.
Suddenly, all you could hear as he brought the cup to his lips were the instruments in the background played by the live musicians.
A silent gasp escaped your lips. It struck you — you haven't really looked at him all day. Until now.
He was too good to be true.
Nanami forwent his glasses, and you can see the ends of his lashes brush the top of his cheeks as his eyelids fell. His hair was done meticulously, and the warm lights of the shrine lit up the strands on his head to be as golden as the pieces on your hair ornaments.
Even as you brought up your own cup to take three sips of sake, the vision in your mind stayed the same —
Of how he took your breath away by the sight of him in his montsuki haori hakama. Your heart bloomed: you stared at the crisp lines of fabric that surrounded his collar, neatly falling against his peachy skin. His Adam's apple gently rose and fell when he sipped his second cup of sake.
Staring down at your two cups placed side-by-side after you had your second drink, you wondered if there had ever been another man like him before. And whether there will ever be a Nanami Kento ever again.
Heart clenching, the music beside you started its slow crawl, carrying low notes that vibrated in your chest.
You wished it so.
For when you lived, died, and are reborn — you shrewdly didn't even want your soul to consider anyone else.
The string accompaniment slowly built up the notes, echoing singular plucked koto strings.
Utahime poured Nanami his third and last cup of sake.
Eyes carrying the reflection of your future husband, tears suddenly fell down in rivulets. Oxygen didn't pass your lungs.
Nanami paused, eyes widened as he carried his last sip, shocked at your sudden onslaught of tears. He turned to you fully with worry.
Oh, you looked him in the eye, you were getting married.
Unable to stop yourself, the song hit its sforzando. You threw yourself at your husband, arms wrapping around his neck, and desperately pressing your lips to his.
Needles and pricks danced around your legs after the kneeing position you were forced in the entire ceremony, causing you to nearly topple over the blond man. Loud gasps rang from the crowd as soon as you committed the scandalous act, but all you could hear was the beat of your hearts following the tune of the music.
And the rule-following man before you allowed it, for whatever you do: right and wrong, he put you first.
Catching you from falling, Nanami corded a singular strong arm around your waist, pressing you firmly against his body, hoisting you up until your knees weren't on the ground. Feet — swept.
Deepening the kiss with the god of a man before you, you were positive — as the warm sake flowed from his mouth to yours, you had taken your final sips.
You were officially husband and wife. By all means and forms of tradition, the gods had decreed it.
"What is the matter with you two?!" Gakuganji roared. Several pairs of hands attempted to rip you and Nanami apart while Gojo laughed merrily in the background.
Staring at you and Nanami making out right in front of her, Utahima twisted her face with annoyance.
Tumblr media
"Nothing stays the same. However, for this life and the next, I beg any god that's listening to me...please let me spend every lifetime making our bed together and sharing bread from the bakery," you vowed in front of your guests.

Historical Fashion in The Priory of the Orange Tree
I'm not a historian, but I've spent a significant amount of time over the past decade researching historical fashions from across the world. Naturally, this colored my reading of The Priory of the Orange Tree when I first read it in 2019. I started rereading Priory this month in anticipation for the release of the sequel, and I thought it would be fun to share my ideas for the clothing styles of the various countries in the book, based on real-world historical fashion. I also wanted to use this as a moment to compare some of the fashions of Priory with those in the forthcoming A Day of Fallen Night. These are by no means definitive; they're just my personal headcanons for the book, but I thought some fans and artists would appreciate this as a reference.
To begin, Inys and Queen Sabran's court reminded me heavily of Elizabethan England, so while reading Priory, I mostly thought of the book taking place in an analogue to Earth of the mid-to-late 1500s. This colors my perception of the various clothing styles, so you will notice that most of the countries will have clothing from the same century or thereabout. This extends to Fallen Night, which takes place 500 years earlier, but only for the countries that I was able to find enough reference information on. (Trying to find fashion references for eleventh and twelfth century Europe and Africa on the internet is very difficult!) I've made (terrible; I am not a graphic designer) collages to lower the photo count in this post, but please keep in mind that this post is still image-heavy.
SEIIKI
Seiiki is based off of Edo-era Japan. In keeping with the 1500s theme, I have imagined fashions similar to those of the very early Edo period and the late Azuchi-Momoyama period. With how they are described in the text, I believe the wealthy and fashionable in Ginura would likely dress more like the fashions from the early 1700s with elaborate nihongami and extensive sea-themed accessories.
Tumblr media
For A Day of Fallen Night, this would land us squarely in the Heian era, my personal favorite of the Japanese historical eras in terms of fashion. Now I can only imagine Princess Dumai with extremely long hair lmao.
Tumblr media
SEPUL
Sepul is based off of Korea. We don't know much about Sepul, but for Korea, the 1500s would have been towards the beginning of the Joseon dynasty. 16th century hanbok looked more similar to the hanbok of Goryeo, as opposed to the more "classical" 18th century style of Joseon hanbok that is used today in film and re-enactments.
Tumblr media
For Fallen Night, that puts Sepul in the middle of the Goryeo dynasty, when it followed Song dynasty fashion. However, Sepul is a queendom, and during the Silla period, Korea had three regnant queens. Because of this, I imagine that the queens of Sepul would likely dress more similar to the royalty of Silla, with their elaborate crowns and gold chains.
Tumblr media
EMPIRE OF THE TWELVE LAKES
The Lacustrine are based off of China, and the 1500s lands us in the later half of my favorite Chinese dynasty: the Ming. We don't get to see much of the Empire, but what we do see is very lavish and grand, much like Ming dynasty hanfu itself.
Tumblr media
500 years back lands us in the Song dynasty. One of the interesting trends of the Song dynasty was pearl makeup, something that would likely be popular in the Twelve Lakes due to the continent's general aquatic theme.
Tumblr media
INYS
Inys is based off of England, and while reading I imagined something similar to the fashions of the 1560s and 1570s during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. I'd also imagine that Inys would be "behind" in terms of fashion compared to Mentendon, due to how Inysh society and fashion is described as more conservative.
Tumblr media
MENTENDON
Mentendon is based off of the Netherlands, and I particularly imagined it similar to the Dutch Republic, especially in regards to the country's relationship with Seiiki. The Dutch began trading with Japan in the early 1600s, so much of my headcanon for Mentendon is based off of the Baroque era, particularly the 1630s and 1640s. Mentendon seems to be the most liberal nation of the West, so I'd imagine their fashions to be more forward-facing while still retaining a lot of the similarities to the Elizabethan era, such as the usage of lace ruffs, doublets, and kirtles. Aubrecht and Truyde are described as having long, loose, curling hair, which fits perfectly with the popular hairstyles of these decades.
Tumblr media
YSCALIN
Spain was the inspiration for Yscalin, and I imagined something similar to the 1540s and 1550s, particularly modeled after renaissance Italy as opposed to the Tudor stylings of the English and French.
Tumblr media
LASIA
Lasia is based off of the Kingdom of Kongo, a state that existed in present day Angola, Republic of Congo, and Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1390 until 1857, when it was colonized by Portugal and made a vassal state of the Portuguese Empire. As such, it is difficult to find references for Kongolese fashion without the influence of Portuguese-style clothing. As far as I am aware, the references below are from the 1500s and 1600s and represent Kongolese clothing without European influence.
Tumblr media
THE ERSYR
The Ersyr is based off of Iran. We don't get to see much of the Ersyr in Priory, but Chassar would likely wear Ersyri fashions even when away from home. For Iran, the 1500s puts us at the beginning of the Safavid Empire. The reference images below are from the 1570s to the 1650s.
Tumblr media
For Fallen Night, the eleventh century would be the Abbasid Caliphate. Below are images of artwork from that era to give a general sense of the styles during that period.
Tumblr media
If anyone has any additional information or corrections about the fashions from these time periods in this countries that they would like me to add to this post, feel free to send me an ask or a DM. Thanks for reading! Looking forward to reading A Day of Fallen Night later this week. :)

Hi Justine 👋😊
I had to admit that I wanted to ask you this question long time ago, but I was too afraid of being disrespectful.
On 3rd March, Two maiko had debuted in Yuzawa.
One thing that caught my attention was that the nigongami looked disheveled, and the quality of their shironuri seem lower than the make up I've seen in other maiko, geisha, geiko, geigi, hangyoku...
I decided to ask you today because I've seen the person from the Instagram account @geishamaiko has talked about them.
I don't know if by the time you are reading this the story is still available and I don't think that it is correct to add the image here, so I will write you what the post in his story says:
"I agree that many areas of Japan can recover their Kagai. but it cannot be done by copying Kyoto."
"The girls can't make a debut with a hairstyle like that. It is very ridiculous."
"They can't dance smiling and looking around. To maintain tradition there must be a basis. It becomes a tourist spectacle imitating Kyoto"
Also, he added this link, where you can see them dancing.
https://local-tv.marketplace.rakuten.co.jp/abs/mov/240308_02/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAabWEZGHeZhGRZPbah5Nqg7q4owq-BMvWLcVQoXbHJvIl3fQS0H3X9XeDjA_aem_AWU7tnBrKcxInP7znxencSeIqo0BlopsYbGjj8HyHWymGke6mHO84xpt-ezevos_Ye31NzmjeOOLTAUWQmHNeIYR
With that being said, what is your opinion about their situation?
Yuzawa's geimaiko population is relatively new as they've undergone a revival project to keep the traditions going there with new blood. This isn't uncommon for small pockets of geisha in rural areas across the country and most are even being helped by their local governments to do so. Yuzawa's traditions are based on Kyoto's, with their girls even wearing some kimono and obi previously owned by Kyoto okiya. They learn the Okamoto style of dance, but will also dance the Gion Kouta as seen in the video. This was the first time they've ever done a misedashi ceremony like the ones done in Kyoto, so they were trying it out as a way to show off their current members and to drum up some support for the new girls. Obviously the new maiko didn't look perfect as they didn't have professional makeup artists doing their oshiroi (the girls themselves likely did it) and their hair was likely done by their onesan (I don't think Yuzawa has a nihongami specialist, but I could be wrong), but overall it was a decent presentation, and as long as the girls and the guests had a good time then that's what mattered. To say that they can't dance while smiling or looking around just shows how uneducated the commenter is as traditional dance isn't as stiff or unfeeling as they seem to think. Yes, the Inoue style, who follows the Noh tradition, doesn't show much emotion at all, but other styles that follow the Kabuki tradition, such as Okamoto or Umemoto, can and do. This is why the finale of the Kyo Odori, which is choreographed in the Umemoto style, promotes a very expressive style of dance where even the singing of the lyrics to the song is encouraged! So, sometimes you just need to stop and analyze what's going on instead of just criticizing the outward appearance that you have no prior information about ^^

ATLA Gender Bender: Ty Lee, "Azulon", and "Mao"
Azula -> Azulon Mai -> Mao Ty Lee -> Ty Lee
"Azulon" is shown here wearing his Book 2 outfit. This is meant to be similar, but slightly different from Zuko's Book 1 outfit, to suggest that "Azulon" is wearing a nicer set of armor. "Mao" seems to be the most popular name choice for male Mai. Like "Mai", the name "Mao" is Japanese in origin, but it is usually given to girls instead of boys. Still, there are examples of the name "Mao" being given to boys, though it is rare. I don't see the issue of him having an unusual name.
In ATLA, Mai's hairstyle is inspired by Nihongami, specifically fukiwa (see: atlaculture.tumblr.com/post/64…). As a male counterpart, "Mao"'s hairstyle is inspired by the sohatsu style. As it is drawn, this is not historically accurate, due to the length of his hair and his bangs. His clothes are visually inspired by the Korean drama "Hwarang" (2016). Note that the clothes of the hwarang are more Chinese inspired than native Korean. He is wearing a Chinese style banbi. In my mind, it makes sense for him to look like a hwarang, since he'd be an elite warrior youth.
Ty Lee's costume is visually inspired by traditional male Thai dancers and male performers of Phare, the Cambodian Circus. That's why I gave him a muscular appearance. Normally, I dislike it when the male version of a character is very muscular while the female version is not muscular. But in this case, there are too many reasons for male Ty Lee to be muscular in appearance. First, it would be odd for him to be named "Ty Lee" without possessing great physical strength. Second, when he runs off to join the circus it makes sense that he would be trained as a "strongman". Third, from a design perspective, it makes sense for the trio to include a taller, leaner boy and a shorter, more muscular boy. So in this specific case, I think it makes sense for male Ty Lee to have defined muscle structure, even though female Ty Lee does not. Still, he should not be as muscular as Bolin, since he is a couple years younger than Bolin. I tried to give him the musculature of a male circus performer without overdoing it.
I've been imagining P. J. Byrne as the voice of male Ty Lee, Aaron Himelstein as the voice of "Mao", and Jason Marsden as the voice of "Azulon".  Like what I'm doing? Consider leaving me a donation via Ko-Fi.

The look of... VIII: Shimizu 清水
Tumblr media
Historical context The first official date in the history of Shimizu Geigi is 1872, when "Machi Geisha" (まち芸者), who were distinct from "Kaku Geisha" (廓芸者), appeared. A Kenban (registry office) was established in 1877. At that time, Machi Geisha and Kaku Geisha combined were around twenty people. Only ten years later, in 1887, their number had increased to 100. The number of Geigi continued to grow.
In 1938, the number of Geigi was around 260, and they were highly regarded nationwide for their skills in art and behaviour. In 1951, a "Shimizu Geigi school" (清水芸妓学校) was opened, around 150 Geigi attending the event.
Tumblr media
In the 1970's, Japan's period of economic growth started tapering off, interest in traditional arts dwindeled, which resulted in less work opportunities for Geigi and the number of Ryotei decreasing. In response to this, local business leaders and Shimizu Geigi started an organisation to help fostering new Geigi (Seibikai 清美会).
By 1985, their number had decreased to thirteen and the Kenban closed. In 1991, local businessmen and Geigi formed a different company (Seibi Co. 清美(株)), which worked as employer for Geigi. Due to a bad economic environment, Shimizu Odori (清水をどり) was last held in 1998, Seibi Co. was dissolved in 2004, and Haru no mai (春の舞) was discontinued in 2009. As a result of this, some of Seibi's employees became independent Geigi.
Allegedly, the number of Geigi hit rock bottom in 2011 with only two remaining. However, in 2012, around eleven Geigi worked in Shimizu. Since then, the city had a steady stream of Geigi coming and going again. At the end of this year, 2023, there are ten Geigi working in the city.

Notes Shimizu was merged with Shizuoka in 2003. Shimizu Geigi and other traditional arts performers are backed by 静岡伝統芸能振興 Shizuoka dentô geinô Shinkô-kai/Shizuoka traditional performing arts promotion association, which is the successor to Seibikai. You might notice I didn't start this post with a historical b/w photo. There are some old photos on the Shizuoka Dentogeino homepage, but they are the size of a postal stamp. And that's it. I feel let down. No chance to explore the historical style of Shimizu. Anyways. "The look of Shimizu/Shizuoka" was requested by @geimaiko. The layout of this post is based on geimaiko's own. Also... geimaiko originally started these series. If you liked this post, you should go and thank her, because without her, there would be no "the look of..." ;)

Ichimatsu’s unique hairstyle that she have is actually just a disheveled Nihongami. She wore specifically this kind of hairstyle during her human life, however when she was killed it got all messy. She didn’t bother fixing it and it is now consider to be her own little hairstyle.
