You sat on the bleachers, snacking on a freezie. The humid weather had finally gotten to you, causing sweat droplets to form on your forehead and trickle down the skin.

“Are you seriously watching her again?” Your friend, Haerin, asked as you turned your head to look at her.

Your face warmed up as your ears became a subtle shade of red.

“Of course not! I was bored and decided to sit here, that’s all.” You said, waving your unoccupied hand in defence.

You were innocent… nothing more than that.

“You liar! Your face is heating up.” She exclaimed while pointing at the obvious redness.

“It’s very hot outside, duh!” Terrible excuse. It was hot, yes, but if you were to get that red due to the heat, maybe you should get it checked.

“Fine… I was watching her play.” You mumbled in defeat. Haerin’s judgey face was enough to make you admit your true intentions.

Huh Yunjin, Crimson Heart High’s best soccer player. Everyone took a liking to her and she was favoured by all teachers.

Everyone took a liking to her, which only explained why you had no chances with her. There were too many people to compete with, so you hid your feelings and watched in silence.

You watched as she ran on the grassy field, eyes scanning the area for any open opportunities. Once she found one, she kicked the ball, making it hit the mesh of the net at a speed even the goalie couldn’t stop.

She smiled, cheering silently as your heart thumped at the sight.

She was amazing.

“Why don’t you try talking to her?” Haerin asked while turning her head to watch the girl, whom you had a crush on, play.

“Talk to her? Please, you must be out of your mind.” You said, closing your eyes at her so-called silly idea.

“Hey, (Name)—”

“AH!”

Your scream was enough to silence her greeting, her voice catching you completely off guard.

Haerin and Yunjin flinched at the sudden noise, leaving them both confused.

“Sorry, did I scare you?” She asked softly, unsure if she would scare you again if she spoke too loudly.

“No, it’s okay.” You said, hanging your head low in embarrassment. First interaction and you already blew it. Great job.

“Well… I’ve been wanting to say this for a while now, but I’ve seen you a few times around in the halls and in class…” She paused.

Oh come on, the anticipation was already getting to you enough.

As you waited for her to continue, you took this time to admire her appearance; her ginger-red hair was tied up into a bun with a few strands elsewhere, sweat droplets on her forehead and her red cheeks from constantly running around (or blushing), and the way her arms held the soccer ball secured, which part of you wished was you instead.

“I was wondering if you wanted to, well, hangout sometime.” She said, breaking you out of your daze. Your eyes widened at her question as you looked over at Haerin, extremely flustered.

Haerin looked back at you, mouthing the words ‘say yes’ quicker than ever.

And so, you did, yet then again, not quite

“Yes, that sounds nice.” Was what you hoped to say, but instead, it came out as a stutter and a fumble of words.

“Yeah, um, that sounds…nice. That sounds nice.” You mentally facepalmed, embarrassed of your mishap once again.

Great job, part two.

Yunjin looked at you in confusion, but then broke out into a smile and laughed. She was right about her theories, you were pretty cute.

“Sweet! I’m looking forward to it.” She said, her words leaving your heart a thumping mess.

You attempted to smile back at her and she laughed again. What was so funny about your laugh?

“What’s so funny?” You asked, slightly offended.

“Nothing, nothing. You’re just… cute.” Yunjin smiled at you once more, before returning to the soccer field to continue their match.

Best believe, you looked like you were on the verge of having a heatstroke.

“Wow… You’re progressing faster than I ever will.” Haerin said, her voice bringing you back to reality.

It was true, she had spoken to her crush a few times, but they weren’t going anywhere compared to you and Yunjin. It would be a lie if she said she wasn’t a little jealous.

Still, this would be a good time to take notes. Maybe her and her crush could end up like this one day.

Yunjin was now long gone and back on the field, however you were still wondering how you managed to score a date with your school’s best player.

Maybe you did have chances after all.

Cleo languorously stretched across the couch, swinging their legs over Bdubs’ lap. His hand wrapped around their ankle, but he didn’t look up from the book he was reading. He was squinting, holding the pages only a few inches from his face.

“You need glasses,” Cleo remarked.

“I—huh?” Bdubs asked, tearing his attention away from the book. His brow furrowed as his brain caught up. “Excuse me! Do I look like a nerd to you?”

“Hmm,” Cleo said, sinking further into the couch. A warm sea breeze blew in through the open window and tousled their hair. Living in Atlantis sure has some perks.

Bdubs sniffed, returning back to his book. It was something he had found in Cleo’s library, something about color theory. They couldn’t fault him for reading it but it was awfully… boring.

They wished Etho were here, if only to have someone join them in making fun of Bdubs. But he had left early in the morning to go caving of all things. Like it was some sort of hobby.

As if summoned, Cleo’s communicator beeped. They dug through their pockets until they found the device and flipped it open. The message that greeted them made them burst out laughing.

“What?” Bdubs asked. “Let me see!”

Still laughing, Cleo handed the communicator to him.

Etho was blown up by creeper.

“Oh, geez,” Bdubs snickered. “What’s he doing down there?”

“Not using his shield, apparently.”

“Does he ever?”

Grinning, Cleo snatched the communicator out of Bdubs’ hands and began typing.

ZombieCleo: try using that thing on your left arm to block any explosions!

Etho: thanks, cleo. I never would have known

Cleo snorted.

“What? What’s he saying?” Bdubs abandoned his book so he could read over Cleo’s shoulder.

“He must have set spawn over there,” Cleo mused. There were no cries of despair echoing through the castle to indicate that Etho had spawned here.

“See? He’s still an amazing wonderful genius.”

“Despite all signs to the contrary.”

“Cleo!” Bdubs admonished. But he still stretched out alongside them on the couch, pillowing his head on their chest. “Naptime?” he asked hopefully.

It was midday, the warm breeze soporific. Despite themselves, Cleo yawned. It wasn’t such a bad idea, taking a nap… it wasn’t like there was much else to do, with the castle almost all decorated and the end of the season drawing near…

Cleo’s communicator dinged.

Etho was blown up by creeper.

“Again?!” Bdubs squawked.

Cleo shrieked with laughter. “Oh my god! What’s he doing? Should we go down and rescue him?”

“Oh, no, no, Cleo, this is the Etho we’re talking about. He doesn’t need our help.”

“Right, of course. And this doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that we’re very, very comfy right now.”

Bdubs’ eyes were already falling closed. “Exactly, Cleo, we’re better friends if we don’t help him.”

Cleo’s communicator dinged.

“Don’t tell me…” Bdubs whined.

Etho was blown up by creeper.

Cleo couldn’t breathe through their laughter.

Smiling, I leaned against my girlfriend, Haerin. My phone in hand, my feet resting on Hyein's legs. I had finished the test a long time ago, and honestly, I already knew what result I had: Black Cat Energy.

We all had some free time, and that's when Danielle had an idea. We had all been discussing who among us had the "Golden Retriever Energy" and who had the "Black Cat Energy." Minji then suggested we all take a test, and here we were, taking that test.

My eyes landed on Haerin's phone, recognizing the same result on her screen as on mine. With a smirk, I showed her my phone, bringing a smile to her face. Moments later, her lips pressed against my forehead, widening my grin, and I decided to sit up a bit.

"So? Is everyone done?" Hyein asked, scanning each of us. Minji's forehead was creased, but she nodded. Danielle eagerly raised her hands. "Can I guess? Please?" she asked, grinning broadly and full of excitement. Hanni nodded, causing Danielle to clap her hands joyfully.

"Hyein is a Golden Retriever. So is Minji, and Hanni, Y/n, and Haerin are Black Cats," she guessed, making me smirk a bit. Minji shook her head. "No, no. Hanni must be a Golden Retriever, and so are you," Minji said, shaking her head again.

"Can I guess?" I interrupted, raising my hand slightly. Haerin's attention immediately shifted to me, her hand on my thigh applying gentle pressure. Grateful for this brief touch, my heart rate accelerated, filling me with warmth. The others seemed to have missed my interruption, but not Haerin.

"No, man. Minji is also a Black Cat," Hyein asserted louder, pointing at Minji. Frustrated, the leader of Newjeans pointed at Haerin and me, "What do you think?" she asked, silencing everyone as they turned to us.

The cozy bubble that had formed around us suddenly burst, bringing me back to reality. My cheeks turned slightly pink as Haerin signaled for me to speak, a small smile playing on her lips. "Well, I think Hyein might be a Golden Retriever or a Golden Cat. Minji and Dani are 100% Golden Retrievers, and Hanni is a Golden Cat," I said, immediately locking eyes with the person in question.

"Oh, I forgot there's also a Golden Cat," Hyein murmured softly, receiving a nod from Minji. My phone screen had long since turned off during their debate. Haerin applied gentle pressure once more, moving her hand up and down.

Immediately, I looked at her. "This test is silly," she murmured into my ear. Her lips brushed against my ear, sending shivers down my arms, causing me to tremble at the touch. Haerin smirked at my reaction, letting out an amused huff. Hanni sighed and unlocked her phone.

"Y/n is right. I'm a Golden Cat," Hanni revealed her result. The others also shared their outcomes, then looked at Haerin and me. When we displayed our results, Minji burst into laughter. "Ohh, this won't hold," she joked, but my brow furrowed almost immediately.

"Oh, come on. It's cute if they're so similar," Hanni said, looking at Minji. Haerin sighed, resting her head on my shoulder. Her eyes closed, seemingly uninterested in the conversation. She didn't even seem to acknowledge it. Quite unlike me.

"What do you think?" I asked, looking at the two women who were finding amusement in it. Hyein next to me immediately rolled her eyes. "This whole Golden Retriever thing. They say a couple is more likely to stay together if they're opposites," Hyein explained, and I nodded in understanding.

"But that doesn't mean you and Haerin don't match," Danielle interjected, her eyes slightly wider than before. I pressed my lips together. "Is that why people are always shipping Haerin and Danielle?" I asked, "Because Dani is a Golden Retriever and Haerin a Black Cat?" I tilted my head curiously.

"Probably. The same thing happens with extroverts and introverts. Take Ryujin and Yeji, for instance," Hyein commented. "Or Winter and Karina," Minji added. "Or Tzuyu and Sana," Hanni chimed in. "Or Solar and Moonbyul," I contributed, nodding in understanding.

Yes, they were right. Often, extroverts were shipped with introverts...

Uncertainly, my eyes settled on Haerin, still resting her head on my shoulder, her eyes closed and her hand still on my thigh. I licked my lips. "But as I said, that doesn't mean you two don't fit together," Danielle reiterated, making me smile a little.

"I know. Thanks."

Reflectively, I sat on my bed, my eyes fixed on the screen as I browsed through TikTok and Instagram videos about this theory. It was true; it seemed much sweeter if one of the partners was more lively. My eyes shifted to Haerin beside me, her back turned to me, peacefully asleep.

Did she not think about it at all?

Perhaps we weren't as compatible as I thought?

We both had Black Cat energy... We were both introverts...

Even our MBTI was nearly identical...

Were the others right? Did Haerin and I not fit together?

Should she be with Danielle instead?

Sighing, I bit my lip, still looking at my sleeping girlfriend.

But I want us to fit together...

My phone screen went dark as I hadn't touched it for a while. That prompted me to place it on my bedside table and turn to Haerin, wrapping my arms around the sleeping woman, pulling her close.

I don't want us to be apart...

"Are you still thinking about that test?"

My eyes widened in surprise hearing my girlfriend's voice. I thought she was asleep.

"Were you awake?"

Haerin took a deep breath, turning in my arms to face me, her face inches from mine. Her hands wrapped around me. "Yes, I was awake," she replied, her voice deeper and sleepy.

I chuckled softly, "Go back to sleep, baby," I murmured, planting a kiss on her forehead. Haerin sighed, "Don't tell me you've been pondering that test."

I fell silent, making Haerin exhale sharply. She tightened her grip on my hips. "The test is stupid. The whole theory is nonsense. So, don't think about it," she said, sounding annoyed. I felt unsettled. Sitting up, Haerin did the same, switching on her bedside lamp to cast some light in the room.

"What if there's some truth to it? Why else would something like this exist?" I sighed, glancing at Haerin, who looked back at me with a furrowed brow. Taking in her gaze, I stared back at the ceiling, "Forget it... We should get some sleep," I murmured.

Haerin shook her head, "Do you want to break up?"

Taken aback, I looked at her with wide eyes and an open mouth, "What?" I gasped. Haerin met my gaze, serious, "Do you want to break up?" she repeated, her eyes locked onto mine. I was stunned by the question.

Shaking my head, I replied, "No... Do you?"

A smirk tugged at Haerin's lips as she shifted closer, grabbing my hands. She intertwined our fingers, looking at me with a smirk

"Not for a second."

I caught my breath as Haerin stood, towering over me. "But... this test," I whispered, interrupted by Haerin's soft chuckle. Cupping my face with her hands, she said, "It's just a test," before pressing her lips to mine.

Pulling away slightly, a small smile graced her lips as she studied my face, "We're perfect together, Y/n," she whispered before planting another kiss on my lips. "Stop thinking about this test. Just think about us," she commanded, making me smile.

"Every second."

Haerin grinned, settling onto my lap. My arms wrapped around her hips, her warm hands still cupping my face. Chuckling, I replied, "Okay, I'll stop thinking about it," which made Haerin raise an eyebrow. "Promise," I added, laughing softly.

"Good. Because you're stuck with me."

Smiling, I watched Haerin unwrap my gift. She looked up at me immediately, realizing what I had given her. After all, she had mentioned several times that she wanted these shoes. Haerin eagerly tried on the shoes, and I watched her with delight.

I hadn't seen her this happy in a while.

"Oh, did you finally buy new shoes?" Danielle asked as she entered the living room with Hanni. Hyein and Minji were busy preparing food together. Haerin glanced briefly at them, shaking her head. "No, Y/n gave them to me," my girlfriend replied, beaming.

She immediately stood up and took a few steps, her eyes gleaming with joy. "They fit perfectly. Thank you, baby," the taller woman exclaimed happily, planting a brief kiss on my lips. After all, Hanni and Danielle were here...

"Uh..."

Almost immediately, my attention shifted to Hanni, who took a sharp breath, followed swiftly by Danielle, who slapped her lightly. My forehead creased in confusion. "What's going on?" I asked, puzzled by their behavior. Haerin returned to sit beside me, beginning to remove her shoes.

"Well," Hanni began hesitantly, glancing between me and the shoes before meeting my gaze. She licked her lips. "You're familiar with the Shoe Theory, aren't you?" she inquired, causing Haerin to snap her head up. My eyes narrowed suspiciously. "No. What do you mean?" I asked, more slowly.

Exasperated, Haerin sighed and looked irritably at Hanni. "Enough with these theories!" she exclaimed, rising from the couch. Holding her new shoes in one hand and mine in the other, her eyes narrowed as she glared at Hanni. "Stop it with these theories! Do you even realize what you're doing to me?"

Taken aback, I turned to my girlfriend. "What does that mean?" I questioned, causing both Hanni and Danielle to chuckle. Haerin's smirk softened as she looked at me. "No matter how many theories speak against us, I love you, and that's not going to change, understood?" she declared firmly.

My eyes widened, meeting hers. I could feel my cheeks flush and my heartbeat quicken. "Yes," I replied, nodding.

Haerin pulled me into our room. "But what did she mean by the theory?" I asked, genuinely curious. Haerin simply shook her head, choosing not to respond.

Yes. In short, HYBE ordered an audit on ADOR because they found proof that MHJ and a man planned to make ADOR a separate company, Mhj and the man talked with shareholders to try to get them to back them(ador) up so they can leave hybe. This is how it started and then later on a bunch of other stuff came out.. Reddit has master posts of this, you can find them if you want to read more about it

So after the news came out about the audit, she started responding to it, she claimed hybe copied newjeans to make Illit, she claimed that she was promised to debut hybe's first gg but they debuted le sserafim first instead, she implied that she was in a slave contract. So she namedropped 2 groups first. And then somehow some article reported that she went to a shaman to discuss BTS' enlistment and when they would go and so the shaman could make sure they really go? The last part is a bit confusing because idk how a shaman could make them go but yeah. And that's how BTS got into the picture. She later basically admitted this by rambling about how this shaman is just a friend of hers who just happens to be a shaman.

"Why did BTS end up being the bad guys again?"

Because nothing unites kpop fans more than hating on bts. BTS genuinely didn't do anything, kpop fans just started hating on them for no reason and they kept making tweets about "xy group disbanded because of hybe"

In my understanding, they hired this external legal team or set up this law firm to deal with the hate campaign against Bts. There are a lot of conspiracy theories going around rn, about BTS/hybe being in a cult and K-pop fans being kpop fans and bringing up everything they can about bts' past. So I think this second legal team is just for the BTS issue so that the hybe legal team can fully focus on bringing mhj to court. Again, this is just how I interpreted it.

Hello, anon. Thanks you as well for providing a bit more context on everything that's going on. If you don't mind, I have a few things to comment on regarding what you said, and also, I have a couple of questions that I hope won't offend anyone:

1. Regarding the accusations made by that woman about copying NJ: why did she say that? I don't know much about that group, but a girl group in K-pop isn't something new, right? The concept isn’t that… new, I think? And their sound isn't so... unique? From what little I've heard and some comparisons I've seen. Is the new group exactly the same, or what? Does NJ have something unique that can be easily identifiable if someone copies it? And that’s why she said that?

2. She was promised that she would debut the company's first girl group: okay, they didn't do it, and? From what little or much I've read about what this woman has said, I've concluded that she's a tantrum-throwing and pretentious person who cries when she doesn't get what she wants. You know who she reminds me of? Veruca, the character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

3. The shaman thing is complete madness and it’s probably the comedic contribution to all of this😭.

4. The obsession of Kpoppies with BTS should be studied. I can bet that not even the biggest stan in the fandom is as obsessed with them as Kpoppies are. If only they put as much effort into supporting their favorites as they do into hating BTS, they would help them rise above the mediocrity that many are in. At least in terms of sales, streaming, charts, etc., with the quality of content they put out, there's not much they can do.

5. Ahhhh, your explanation about the external legal team makes sense, but at the same time, I wonder if BigHit does have its own legal team, and if it doesn't, I wonder why.

newjeans ditto analysis, theories and thoughts: about parasocial relationships in kpop, loneliness, emotional bonding and the desire to have mutual love with someone.

first of all, i want to clarify that i don’t believe in a “literal” theory and i think they wanted to metaphorically or symbolically represent a feeling or something more abstract (i’ll explain this in detail) so i’ll be analyzing that! (mv elements and what they might symbolize).

however, tokkis have made so many interesting theories that are worth considering. here’s some of them:

1. newjeans are ghosts

2. newjeans are hallucinations of heesoo

3. newjeans and heesoo are friends but they got into an accident and only heesoo survived (and that’s how her arm broke)

now, my opinion and what i am going to explain in this post, is that ditto is about parasocial relationships in kpop, loneliness, emotional bonding and the desire to have mutual love with someone.

i will be explaining point by point why i do think this.

1. the meaning of “ditto”:

the word ditto means “the same thing again”, a repeat - as when you agree with something somebody else just said. it means “in the same manner” and it’s used to express mutual feelings.

ditto = “so am i”, “me too”.

this same thing is expressed through the lyrics:

“do you want somebody like i want somebody? you smiled at me but do you think about me now?”

“i want you so, want you, so say it ditto”

“say it back, oh, say it ditto”

it seems like the narrator of the song desperately looks for feedback from another person and wants to be sure that the feelings are mutual. “do you want somebody like i want somebody?” this narrator (may be heesoo, but again, i don’t believe that it’s literally heesoo but what she represents. i’ll talk about this later) feels lonely and wants someone to finally have a meaningful connection.

2. the deer:

quoting what minji said about the deer, “you know the deer that appears in the mv? this is something we say in the album too, but with our deer friend we tried to represent that odd distance between someone you want to approach but can’t fully and that can stand for various relationships.”

every time we see the deer, heesoo is watching it from afar. this can represent, as minji said, how it is wanting to reach someone emotionally but not being able to. this scene is so sad since they focus heesoo’s and the deer’s eyes; eye contact creates a heightened sense of emotional intimacy. “the eyes are the window to the soul” is the idea that you can understand a person’s emotions by looking into their eyes.

what i personally think about the deer (theory):

minji said “that can stand for various relationships” and i think it could possibly mean a parasocial relationship between idol and fan. heesoo has a romantic interest which is the boy who always stares at her so it could also mean the distance between them and her fear of wanting to get close to him or her one-sided love.

but what made me think that the deer could represent newjeans as idols and heesoo as the fans is the side b mv. for me, side b is about heesoo becoming independent and distancing herself from newjeans (her friends, or maybe her beloved idols) and starts to live in the real world. i’m going to mention everything i think about side b later, now back to the deer.

side a: heesoo is happy with newjeans, she’s living a dream with them and they’re best friends. the scene with the deer in this mv is calm, even though she’s still watching it from the distance, her eyes doesn’t show any negative emotion.

this scene appears after heesoo was shown sleeping next to newjeans and after the deer appears, she suddenly wakes up alone. the deer was like a reminder that everything was a lie and the truth is that newjeans have always been afar from her and what they had was not real.

side b: heesoo is avoiding newjeans and she tries to live her life without them. the moments they previously shared together are no longer the same as it was in side a; heesoo is alone and apart from newjeans.

the scene with the deer is so important. considering that she’s distancing herself from them, the eye contact with the deer is very sad. it’s like a goodbye because after it the deer leaves and heesoo’s eyes are almost with tears.

the deer leaves right after a scene of heesoo walking with her romantic interest, the boy. which may mean that newjeans left her after she was able to create a real relationship like she always wanted so she no longer needed them.

3. heesoo:

like i said earlier, i believe heesoo symbolizes newjeans fans: tokkis.

the general producer min hee-jin said, “the music video for the pre-released song ditto (...) contains an unexpected story unfolded by bunnie’s (official fan club name) and newjeans. a surprise cameo appearance (...)”

heesoo can actually represent anyone who is so lost in their loneliness that they seek coping mechanisms like daydreaming. but this thing is very common in parasocial relationships, especially in kpop.

4. the boy:

the boy can be not necessarily heesoo’s romantic interest, i feel like he symbolizes the real world, real relationships. he always stares at her but she avoids him, although it’s noticeable she also wants to get closer to him, which can symbolize the fear of intimacy and denial of the real world. she knows he’s there (she knows there are possible relationships waiting for her, but she ignores it).

5. the camera:

heesoo is always recoding newjeans with her camera. she never joins to what the girls are doing, she just watches them through the camera which makes her only a watcher. but she seems happy even if she is not part of it, she keeps the memories in her camera.

6. the pinky red nail:

i was struggling trying to understand the meaning of this since heesoo’s little finger was still painted red even when newjeans were gone. if it was all her imagination, how did they painted her nail? could she have painted it herself? could be. but is it a coincidence that the color is red?

what i personally think about the nail (theory):

maybe i’m just overthinking but it reminded me of the legend of the red string of japan. according to this myth, everyone’s pinky finger is tied to an invisible red string that will lead them to their soulmate.

even when newjeans aren’t with heesoo, her painted nail symbolizes she’s not alone as she thinks and someone is waiting for her outside, in the future, she only has to go out and find it.

i don’t think the main message is that she have a soulmate waiting for her but the fact that she doesn’t need newjeans to feel loved. she can still find mutual love with someone else.

7. the gray cat:

gray cats are a symbol of independence and the power of independent people. they help people who are working through co-dependency to find true happiness in themselves.

the gray cat makes its appearance in side a’s mv, when heesoo is still very much dependent on newjeans. i think this means that newjeans also helped heesoo to find her happiness and become independent.

8. side b mv a parallelism:

side b shows us that what heesoo was seeing was not really real but if you pay attention, side b’s is also about heesoo starting to be independent of newjeans. she even breaks the camera, which was important in her relationship with newjeans. we can see a scene where minji calls her and she doesn’t answer the phone, she’s choosing not to get involved with newjeans, and maybe that’s why she doesn’t see them anymore.

and the most important thing: parallel scenes to side a.

if in side a we see how the girls write on his broken arm, in side b her cast is clean.

if in side a she’s walking with them under the rain, in side b she’s walking alone with her umbrella.

(i wanted to put every single parallelism but the post is already long so i will just mention those but there are so many! or details like heesoo seeing newjeans dance from afar and then looking at her clean cast, newjeans hugging heesoo in side a then in side b they are all hugging without heesoo, and more)

it’s everything what her life would be like if she no longer depended on them and started living her life. and she even gets to talk to the boy, like i explained earlier.

8. the present and the past:

i haven’t figured it out this yet but there are transitions between present and past. i don’t know if side a is the past and side b is what happens next, i don’t know if it’s a linear story but time is definitely weird.

something curious: a deer crossing your path is a reminder to check in with yourself to make sure you are not living in the past or in the future, and to realign yourself back to the present moment.

and

side b mv loops back to side a mv, the end of side b is the start of side a.
