Mr. Sandman (Chapter 12 - The End)
Summary: Felicity Burgess, the adopted daughter of Alex Burgess and Paul McGuire lived a sheltered life from the dark secret that lay beneath her feet. But what happens when that secret is now her's to keep? Will her love for her family keep her from doing the right thing or will Mr. Sandman bring her a dream worth sacrificing everything?
Chapter Triggers: Angst and shocking endings
“Be what you would seem to be - or, if you'd like it put more simply - never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.” -Lewis Carroll

Felicity felt the air slowly return to her lungs as she inhaled shaky breaths through slightly parted lips as she watched transfixed as the color returned to Morpheus's skin and his strength returned; allowing him to rise from the cold black marble flooring. She wanted to sob for joy at seeing that he had not given up but she withheld that feeling as she stood limply almost sagging in relief in Chorozon's grasp as she watched Morpheus stand up to Lucifer face to face. The battle was not yet over; it was Lucifer's turn to make a move. But it seemed the Ruler of Hell could not make one.
Instead, they turned to Chorozon. A mad look on their face as they ordered "Give him the Helm."
The demon behind her stiffened and Felicity half-turned to see the Duke of Hell looking panicked as he clutched the helmet tighter. "No, please. Your majesty! I traded it fair and square!"
Felicity's lips curled up into a grin as she pulled herself from the demon's grasp and reached for the helmet "Yeah, and Morpheus just won it back; so give it here." she replied
Her fingers didn't even have a chance to touch it though before Chorozon spun around to face her; bloodshot eyes gleaming with rabid savagery as he grabbed her by the throat and turned swiftly. A choked gasp escaped her as she grappled at his hand around her throat as her heels tipped over the edge of the open tower. The only thing keeping her in place from toppling hundreds of feet to the hoard of demons below was Chorozon's fingers around her pale throat.
"No!" Morpheus's voice boomed in panic as he took a step forward; reaching out with a hand as if he could stop the demon but dared not move closer in fear he would release her to her death.
The Duke of Hell turned his head to give Morpheus a malicious grin as his fingers slowly peeled themselves one by one from the mortal's throat tipping her backward an inch every time a finger loosened. Felicity shut her eyes tightly in terror as she felt herself slowly falling backward with every suspenseful second.
But then she wasn't. Mazikeen stepped up with a glare and her hand shot out to wrap like a vice around Chorozon's throat and lifted him in the air.
"Unhand the girl." the demoness snarled lowly as she in turn took the helm from the other's shaking grasp.
There was fear in his eyes then; faced with the higher-ranked demon and the pinnacle of death an inch away. But he did what he was told with a look of utter evil on his face as if to say 'if I go down so does she'. His fingers loosened completely allowing Felicity's body to go weightless to gravity. For a split second, she was falling from view; the air around her a brief whistle before her hand caught the edge of the tower halting her descent to the pits below. A gasp of horror left her as she clutched at the cool smooth surface. A second later she saw Chorozon's body be thrown overboard; his screams a loud echo in her ears amidst the wind as he fell like a heavy rock past her and to the demonic arms below.
She thought she was a goner too. She could feel her fingers slowly beginning to slip the more she attempted to haul herself up; cursing in her mind for skipping PE when she was a little girl and for her lack of upper body and arm strength to haul herself up. Her feet kicked and scrambled at the tower walls trying to find a foothold; little bits of stone crumbling beneath her toes casting it down below.
She thought Mazikeen would help but she merely looked down at the redhead as she hung suspended with only fingers slowly slipping and walked away without a word. But before her hands could fully lose grip two pale hands lurched forward and grasped her wrist. Her surprised gaze turned up to gaze up into the terrified face of the Dream Lord. His face was pinched; eyes wide with unfiltered desperation and terror as he looked down at her.
"Dream…" her voice was soft as she gave him a teary smile.
"Hold on, I got you." He attempted to pull her up. But for the life of him, he could not; it was not that she was heavy. A slip of a girl that she was. But his strength evaded him as if the poison of the serpent still weakened his bloodstream.
"Hey." she drew his attention back to her as she looked over at where the Helm sat beside him on the floor. "You got it back….go, find your ruby and rebuild the Dreaming," she told him
He looked as if she was crazy. "Of course, I will. After we leave here," he told her
Her voice was heartbroken as she gazed up at him. "It's okay…"
She saw a stray tear roll down his pale cheek and she wanted to reach up and brush it away but instead, her smile quivered as she met his gaze again.
"I can't…." his voice was shaky; filling with such heartbreak as he realized what she was implying. What he saw in her eyes.
"It's okay," Felicity repeated forcing another smile just for his sake.
"I'm not letting you go," he told her firmly as he looked over his shoulder to see if anyone else would help
But oddly enough, they were not in the room anymore. Instead, the room, the sky, and the fire were all dark, cold, and empty. It was just himself and Felicity at the edge of the tower. There would be no help to come to his aid this time.
"I promised you I'd bring you back to Johanna, remember?" he said trying desperately to convince her. "I don't want to leave here without you."
Felicity's hand twisted; letting go of the edge of the tower to grasp onto his wrist and gave him a look. "We are buried in broken dreams. We are knee-deep without a plea…I don't wanna know, what's it like to live without you. Don't want to know the other side, of a world without you. But it's okay…"
"Don't…" his voice cracked as his eyes shut tightly as if trying to compose himself.
"Hey." his blue eyes opened to stare down into her green and she flashed him a genuine smile with this.
"Maybe you'll catch me the next time."
He did not have a chance to ask what she meant. But she yanked her hands from his grasp and he watched breathlessly in horror as she plummeted down below into the flames and cries of the damned. The last thing he saw was her smile of peace before the flames took her and his heart with her.
~
"Honey you're going to be late for school!" she jolted awake with a gasp; panting for air as if she had just run a race. Her heart was hammering like crazy in her chest.
"Wow…What a dream," she muttered rubbing her forehead.
"Ariel! Come on love we got to go!" the girl's bedroom door opened and her mother stood in the doorway with a soft smile of amusement on her face.
"Just waking up? Were you studying late again last night?" she questioned with a tilt of her head.
"Yeah, I guess." Ariel smiled combing her fingers through her ginger locks with a breath.
"Well, why don't you hurry up and get dressed alright? Your brother is already waiting in the car so make it quick, love," she told her.
The young woman watched her mother leave her room, shutting the door behind her in the process before she threw the cover off of her and headed to grab some clothes to wear. The view of a gentle snowfall made her yard look like a winter wonderland outside and it brought a smile to her face. She'd have to bundle up again today if it was snowing. God only knew if her brother decided today would be the day he'd beat her in a snowball fight.
After she was dressed and backpack over her shoulder she went for the door but paused; smacking her forehead as if she had forgotten something. "Professor Maxfield will kill me if I forget my laptop again!" she muttered to herself rushing across to her bed
The blackened screen lit up to a document; the curser blinking for the next sentence. She paused a moment rereading the last line before a sad smile graced her lips. Fingertips on the keypad she quickly typed out the last sentence.
"And Morpheus knew in that moment death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside of us while we live. And he swore to himself at that moment as he kneeled on the cold marble floor alone in the darkness of Hell; that he would never allow another single soul to slip into the barrier of his heart again."
With a sigh, Ariel saved the document and exited it. Another story was done and another door closed. She shut the laptop and shoved it into her bag before she rushed down the stairs making sure to lock the door behind her on her way out. She did not get out of her college classes until the sun was waning in the sky. Her parents were on a date night and her brother had already gotten a ride over to a friend's house for a sleepover. Ariel on the other hand chose to take the bus since she didn't have a car for her right now.
So she trudged through the snowy streets until she got to the bus stop awning and sat down on the gold bench. Her earbuds were in and music played into her ears so she did not notice when the man sat down on the bench beside her. A shift of black in her peripheral made her look up with a start and quickly take her earbuds out.
"Sorry, you scared me for a second. Didn't hear you walk up. You waiting for the bus too huh? I think it's running a bit late cause of the snow covering the streets." Ariel offered as she turned to look at the man only for her words to die in her throat.
He was utterly beautiful. Skin like pale alabaster. Sharp and elegant facial features consisted of a clean-shaven jawline, pouty red lips, and the most amazing blue eyes the girl had ever seen in her life; like two crystals peering at her with a guarded look. His hair was so messy as if the December air had caressed it one too many times with its cold ghostly fingers. He was dressed in all black; a little under the weather if you'd dared to ask despite his long floor-length coat. His nose too had a dusting of cute pink on it from the cold like her own and she couldn't help but smile when caught a glimpse of it.
"Didn't you hear the news about the weather? It's too cold to be dressed like that mister. Here, take this; it'll hopefully keep you a little warmer." Ariel unraveled her scarf from her neck and reached over to wrap it around the strangers. The fading light of the sun made the ring necklace around her throat sparkle and catch the man's attention as his endless blue eyes fell on it.
She noticed the way his brows creased and for a second she wondered if she'd offended him; he hadn't spoken a damned word to her yet since he'd sat down and the way he looked at her now would have been creepy to anyone else, but the way his eyes slowly lifted from the necklace lying warm against her skin to her eyes she couldn't help but feel the shiver of...something caresses down her spine as if fingers stroked down her back making her feel all warm and tingly on the inside.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?" she suddenly asked tilting her head and studying him. Why did this man look so familiar? She swore she'd have remembered him if they'd met before; his features and his very presence were something she knew couldn't possibly be so forgettable.
"No." his voice was deep but soft-spoken; something akin to rich dark chocolate and secrets as it caressed her ears. But there was also something else hidden beneath the tenor of his voice alone; something sad and haunting as his eyes guarded watched her.
"No…no I think I do," Ariel repeated shaking her head as if trying to clear some fog from her brain. "I swear we've met somewhere before." she scooted closer to him and peered into his face; he merely sat there watching her.
"Perhaps in your dreams." there was a sort of quip in his voice as the corner of his mouth tilted up into a barely-there smile.
"Maybe…" Ariel agreed slowly before turning her face away; the red that dusted her cheeks this time was not from the cold weather.
"Although if that's the case. I would hate to wake up to the real world if you were in my dreams." was she flirting with a stranger at a bus stop? Yes, yes she was.
"May I inquire your name?" the handsome stranger asked after a moment of pause.
"Ariel." the young woman replied. "My mom was a big fan of the Little Mermaid." she joked leaning closer to him with a teasing smile
But Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome did not smile; he looked confused at the comment as if he'd never heard of such a thing. Instead, he tipped his chin down watching her through from beneath thick black lashes.
"Or like the angel Ariel."
the girl paused a moment with an odd look on her face; where had she heard that from before? It was oddly familiar and she squinted thoughtfully.
"Right…" she mumbled
Just then, the sound of the bus sounded coming down the street alerted the pair of its arrival. Breathing a sigh of relief Ariel stood and began grabbing her things off the ground.
"Hey, why don't you come sit with me in the back; we can talk some-" she began walking over to the bus as its doors opened. She turned to look at the man only to stop in confusion when she saw nothing but an empty bench.
The man was gone. As if he'd never been there in the first place. She looked down one side of the sidewalk and then the other but she could not see him; she didn't even see any footprints in the snow. She thought she was going crazy. But she knew he had to be real because the cold December wind chilled her ears and neck from where her scarf should have been but was gone. After all, she'd given it to a stranger at the bus stop.
"Miss, are you boarding?" the driver's voice spoke from within the warm confinements of the bus and she startled turning herself around to face him.
"Y-yeah sorry! I thought I forgot something on the bench." she liked faking a smile.
She climbed aboard and flashed the man her ticket before making her way down to the back to an empty seat. She placed all her things on the empty seat beside her and leaned her head against the cold glass looking out past the snowflakes falling from the sky. For the briefest of moments as the bus began to move she swore she saw a tall dark-clad figure standing among the snow but it was gone in a swirl of white snowflakes making her think she was seeing things. Her phone began to ring in her pocket and she was quick to dig it out to find her best friend's name pop up.
"Hiya Lucy! I'm on my way right now; just got on the bus. Should be there in 20; gonna meet me at the station?" she chirped into the phone
"Not this time lovely! I'm trying to finish up dinner for movie night. Be safe on the walk over yah?"
"You betcha! See you in 30 then!" Ariel hung up and smiled out the window.
After she'd been dropped off at her stop she lugged her bag over her shoulder and began making the 10-minute walk down the street toward her best friend's apartment. Seeing the big brick building looming up ahead in the near darkness the college student quickened her steps. As she came up to the gates she turned to the panel and pressed the com button for Lucy's apartment number.
"Buzzing yah in lovely!" Lucy's voice spoke up from the machine moments before the loud buzz of the electronic door unlocking itself echoed in the cold of the night streets.
Grinning Ariel pushed open the gate to enter but before she could slip through a caw made her stop and she turned curiously to see a large black raven perched on a tree branch above her. She looked at it oddly; those damned eyes looked as if they were all too knowing. Too human. Shaking her head as if she were crazy and slipped inside to head up the stairs for Lucy's apartment
When she got there she knocked twice waiting for the woman to open the door. When she did Ariel was greeted with a white toothy grin. Lucy was a beautiful African American with rich skin and black dreads down her back and large round glasses because she swore they made her look 'cool' despite not needing the glasses.
"Hey, little mermaid!"
"Hi, troublemaker!"
The girls hugged before allowing Ariel through the door and plopping her things on the couch. "Smells, good Lu! What's on the menu tonight?"
"You're favorite~" the other sang as she grabbed a large platter filled with steaming seafood smothered in sauce.
"Seafood boil!" both girls cheered as they plopped down on the ground; placing the tray on the coffee table.
"and for entertainment…." Lucy grabbed the TV remote dramatically clicking it on from its sleeping position to see it was already on Netflix waiting to play a TV show.
"The Sandman."
Ariel laughed sweetly as she leaned back against the sofa's edge. "Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream. Make him the prettiest that I've ever seen." she sang teasingly causing the girls to burst out into laughter.
"Only if he was real, I tell yah. I'd never want to wake up!" Lucy stated shoving a shrimp into her mouth and licking the sauce off her fingers.
Ariel smiled thoughtfully down at the food as she picked at her meal. There was almost a dreamy quality to her gaze as her mind wandered back to the stranger at the bus stop. "Yeah..only if the Sandman was real," she murmured
"I'd give anything to meet him."
Lucy looked over at her friend with an odd look on her face. She nudged the redhead with her shoulder. "Maybe in your dreams lovely. Just never forget to keep a hold of hope you hear me? Not everyone is as horrible as Mark was to you. Who knows, maybe Mr. Sandman truly will give you a dream worth living." she teased with a light smile on her face.
Ariel laughed a bit and nodded looking away from her friend. "I know Lucy. Dreams are not reality. But as the Mad Hatter once told Alice...who is to say which is which?"

So I finished Dead Boy Detectives a few days ago and I desperately need a season two and Netflix is completely fucked and probably won’t renew it (viewership is apparently very low) so I’m just here to say hey, please watch this show! It’s so good! It’s fun and weird and funny and queer and kind of shockingly violent and gory, and all of the characters are absolutely delightful. I don’t normally go for supernatural stuff, but knowing it was in the Sandman universe (also, I highly recommend watching The Sandman first if you haven’t, it’s even better, but also we’re on a time crunch here because again, Netflix is fucked, so if you don’t have the time you should go straight to DBD) made me want to watch it. I watched most of it in one sitting and I’m absolutely obsessed now.
So please watch it! Watch it twice, watch it three times, tell your friends and family to watch it! Honestly even if it’s not your thing and you’re not interested but you would still like to help, you could just mute it and have it on and not even watch. I might do that myself because I have other things to watch (and also I don’t want to get sick of it by watching so many times).
Anyway. Bottom line, please watch Dead Boy Detectives! Because Netflix is a fucked up company that cancels everything if the viewership isn’t super high and I need a second season so badly.

Calling all Good Omens fans... WATCH DEAD BOY DETECTIVES!
I swear, it will not disappoint. It has the same campy, queer, quirky atmosphere as Good Omens, combined with your favorite Sandman stars (Death of the Endless my beloved). Please, give it a watch! The characters are authentic, charming, and very gay. I would recommend this show with all my heart.
Thank you for your time.

“When you love the Doctor, it's like loving the stars themselves. You don't expect a sunset to admire you back. And if I happen to find myself in danger, let me tell you, the Doctor is not stupid enough, or sentimental enough, and he is certainly not in love enough to find himself standing in it with me!” -River Song (Doctor Who: The Husbands of River Song)
Inspired by this post by @ibenology
My rambling about this below 😎👍
These three pairings actually hurt me in how similar they are, not to mention how River’s quote here could apply to both Hob and Mobius as well as of course- herself. The three of them(River, Hob, and Mobius) all fall for this seemingly timeless ethereal being; the sunset that they don’t expect to admire them back.
But the quote I referenced above is shortly followed by The Doctor revealing that he’s been next to River this whole time, and that can kind of tie into both Morpheus and Loki in how they admire their partner back in their own repressed way. River, Hob, and Mobius are all under this assumption that there’s no way that their affection will be reciprocated, but they don’t realize that The Doctor, Morpheus, and Loki have been by their side through it all and it just- UGH. THE PARALLELS BREAK ME.
Anyways, if you can’t tell I’m not used to drawing real people but I did my best to make them look like the actual actors while somewhat retaining my art style 💀

Today I was talking to a friend and he said he’s not watching The Sandman because “It got mixed reviews.”
Tumblr media
The Sandman was critically acclaimed, loved by fans, ranking as a top show on Netflix for three weeks in a row from all around the world… and it’s being overlooked by its potential audience because of review bombings by racists, homophobes, and people who haven’t even seen the show but want to jump on the hate bandwagon.
It’s infuriating and saddening to see this happen to this beautiful show that has so much heart and effort put into it by the people involved. So please spread the word, tell your friends and families about it, encourage then to finish watching the show, and keep the positive discourse and engagement going!

She could not breath, the air within her lungs would not expand as if lodged in the deepest parts of her cavernous chest and would not release. She stumbled dizzily while being acutely aware of the atoms in her body being torn apart and then rearranging themselves like zaps of lightning sparking through her body; she almost feared that she would seize up with it's intensity. A strong lean arm covered in a black sleeve was quick as it caught the girl before she could stumble to the ground and kept her upright on her feet; pressing her up against a tall frame. Felicity's body shuddered at the contact and she blamed the reaction on the streaks that ran through her veins from the teleportation and not on the feeling of finally touching him. She squeezed her eyes closed feeling like vertigo would keel her over into the sand and she found some grounding measures as she pressed her face against a black-cloaked shoulder to regain her breathing and gather her boundaries. She was finding it hard to suck in the air reminding her of being on top of a mountain where the air was much thinner to take into human lungs. A pale hand rose to cup the back of her head calmly to keep her still against his shoulder and for a second Felicity felt safe; she forgot who held her and the thought that perhaps she shouldn't be holding let alone touching this being like this didn't even cross her mind at that moment. It never crossed her mind that this was the first time they had actually made contact since the moment they had met in the basement of her father's estate all those months ago that felt more like years. She also tried not to fall into the feeling of security the relief that flooded her made her feel. She could only imagine the feeling kin to having a long and hard day at work and falling into the most comfortable bed that waited for you at home; wrapped up in a warm fluffy comforter that could drown out the rest of the world around you. Of course, she didn't think that...not at all because there was no memory foam mattress and warm comforter that she fell into but the tall imposing figure of the creator of dreams and nightmares, and he had been imprisoned because of her family for over a century but yet, while her brain wanted to remind her of the cold hard facts of the short history between herself and Morpheus the feminine side of her preened at the feeling of finally being able to touch him after so long of a time craving the contact when he was imprisoned.
"I am sorry. It will take a moment for your body to acclimate to my realm's energy. It was not made for waking humans to enter outside of a dream." his voice was somewhere above her head but it felt as if they were speaking right near her ear with the richness that vibrated against her palm as it lay against the black T-shirt covering his chest.
Felicity managed a slight nod; cheek pressed against the fabric of his black jacket was oddly comforting against her skin. She tried not to think of the uniqueness of his scent with her being up close to him like this. Normal men in her world would smell of some sort of cheap cologne that made her nose hairs tingle or burn and even the expensive colognes gave her a headache. But Morpheus did not have that effect on her. There was something so natural but ethereal about it. There was no actual scent that she could place exactly but the only thing that she could think of a way to describe it in any sort of complexity was...he smelt like a nostalgic memory. Something so happy but bittersweet because it was something you could never have but could always cherish. To Felicity. She couldn't help but think of home. Of safety. Of being complete.
"I'm okay." her voice was soft as she finally peeled her eyes open and slowly withdrew from the confinements of his arms. "I'm alright."
Her green eyes slowly lifted from his black shirt up his alabaster neck and grazed along his sharp jawline before settling on his lips. She blinked realizing she was staring and quickly pushed away completely ignoring the briefest of looks that crossed the dream king's face as she pulled away from him. She spun around looking around her with an awed look.
"What is that? That's not a sky...are we in space?" she pointed up at the beautiful cloudy space above them and looked like the spans of a cosmos swirling and drifting above their heads.
"In a way. We are in a different realm entirely, after all. Things in this world may not make sense to you nor will they follow the laws of your world." Morpheus replied slowly turning around to look around him.
Felicity looked over at him and smiled; the glow of the unnatural cosmetic sky above them made his features look so heavenly. He was beautiful in person in the waking world but there was just something different with him being in his own realm. As if he could not be touched.
"So, tell me Morpheus, you created all of this, yeah?" the redheaded female sidled up to him as he began to walk; leading them in a direction she did not know.
"I did."
"What gave you the inspiration though? Does the king of dreams have dreams of his own?" she asked staring down at her feet as her boots skimmed along the dark sand.
"Every living being has a dream of some kind," Morpheus replied but he never truly answered her question and she peered up at him with a squinting stare.
She was going to call him out on that vague reply but instead, she wasn't watching her feet; clumsy in the sand but even clumsier in boots as she tripped over a small dune she hadn't seen and she toppled forwards. Pale hands quickly surged forward to catch her but he didn't catch her in time before as his hands grasped hers the weight of her descent dragged him down into the sand with her.
She laughed. She couldn't help it. The blackened sand grains were warm beneath her as she lay there; one arm thrown over her eyes as laughter bubbled from her lips. Morpheus looked down at her confused; his body propped above hers by hands on either side of her head and knees bracketing her form. He did not find it funny but he could see the tint of pink on her cheeks beneath the bend of her arm as if she was embarrassed and he wondered what was wrong with her. He blinked as she withdrew her arm and he was momentarily stunned to see how she seemed to glow; had he ever seen her smile like that before? Had she ever smiled in his presence period?
"Are you alright?" he asked looking down at her with a tilted head and guarded eyes as if he was afraid she would do something unpredictable.
"Y-yes, I'm fine Morpheus, truly." Felicity breathed through a lasting giggle. "It's...been a while since I've found humor in anything," she confessed with a fond smile before her hand suddenly reached up to pat through the strands of spiky black hair dislodging black specks from the locks.
"You have sand in your hair mister sandman." she teased and Morpheus couldn't help the warmth that spread through his chest at the gesture.
He was a solitary creature; partly not by choice but partly out of force. He was not connected to humanity as he once was thanks to over a century worth of imprisonment that kept him from his duty so perhaps it was the way the human girl smiled up at him seemingly so relaxed within his presence or the way she seemed to glow in the colorful light of the cosmos above them but for a brief moment, the king of dreams felt at peace and he was reminded of that feeling back in the Burgess mansion when he had first laid eyes on her; the feeling of need to reach out and protect her. But this was Morpheus, he was never good with words let alone the lives of humans; he never understood them. He left that job up to Death.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" her head tilted when she noticed the way his blue eyes bore into her
"You are a complex creature Felicity Burgess." the man rose from his position and held out a hand to her to help her up.
"Complex creature? Well, that's one way to put a girl at ease Morpheus, you should really brush up on your terms of endearment." Felicity chided playfully as she bumped her shoulder with his as he began to lead her once more through the sand for a destination she was not yet aware of.
The man did not say anything else as they walked in comfortable silence. As they strolled along Felicity took in everything her eyes could. This world was so pretty; pretty much like a dream which all things considered was. It was Morpheus's world and for a moment in time, Felicity wondered if she would be able to visit again after today. Would Morpheus take this as an act of thanks for saving him from his imprisonment and then ditch her afterward?
"There is someone I'd like you to meet." A hand pressed to the small of her back regaining her attention
She looked ahead realizing that they were not standing in a large desert space on a dune. Here, the place was sullen and dreary looking. Ahead a huge...massive... colossal-sized gate decorated with all sorts of carvings in the large doors spread ahead of them. For a moment Felicity wondered if the gates of ivory that she saw would ever end the more she gazed one way and the other. But it was not the gate that he was attempting to draw her attention to but rather the figure who was walking up the path towards them.
At first, Felicity thought it was a small man until the figure got closer to reveal a beautiful woman of what Felicity could only assume was of African-American descent with rich dark skin that gleamed with a smooth polish. Her head was buzzed and her ears were..small but pointed at the ends like a little elf which made Felicity smile. Thin-rimmed glasses perched on the other's nose as the newcomer peered over the rims at the pair with a look of surprise and caution as she stood with hands clasped behind her back.
It did not go lost on the young woman that the other was dressed in an old Victorian long-tailed waist coast and suit to match. She wondered what that was all about but she did not get a choice in the matter as Morpheus held his hand out slightly in the other's direction.
"Lucienne." his rich voice spoke formally as he regained her attention. "This is Felicity Burgess. She is my guest."
That seemed to surprise the woman, Lucienne, even more as if guests were not common within the Dreaming. Not wanting to be rude the girl stuck her hand out with a beaming smile.
"It's nice to meet you, Ms. Lucienne!" she told her "This is also my first time in the..." she lifted her gaze to Morpheus as if asking for help.
"Felicity is from the waking world. She has never visited the Dreaming before." The dream king stated
Lucienne's brows rose sharply "Sir, no waking soul has ever-" she began but as the man's gaze turned to her, her words died away and she cleared her throat.
"It has never happened before. But you are a guest of my lords so thus you are a gust of ours. Please, let me show you around." Lucienne held her hand out towards the gates. "If my lord permits it of course," she added quickly
"Please do. I have matters I need to attend to first before I join you." Morpheus did not follow when Felicity began following Lucienne
"You're not going to abandon me in your realm are you, my lord?" Felicity teased over her shoulder.
Her lilted tone brought a slight smile to the man's face as he watched her walk with his librarian. "I would not dream of it, Ms. Burgess."
~
"So you're the librarian of the dream world? That sounds like a heavy load on your shoulders." Felicity strolled along the aisles of the library; lightly gracing her fingers along the spines of the books on the shelves.
"Yes, that is correct. There is nothing about the waking world or of the Dreaming that I do not know or have cataloged here in this library." the woman jotted something down on a ledger book she held as she walked along the rows of books.
The red-headed girl hummed thoughtfully. "So you know about me? Or have something about me in a book here?"
"If you dream my dear, then yes."
"What if I don't dream?" the librarian paused and looked over her thin-rimmed metal glasses at her.
"What do you mean child?"
Feeling a bit embarrassed Felicity shrugged it off. "Oh, nothing. Don't think much of it. So, when's Morpheus coming back? It's been a while, hasn't it? Or does like...time move differently here?" she questioned frowning
"Time has no concept here Ms. Burgess." there it was again. That little tick in the librarian's voice that Felicity had been picking up on every rare time that she would say her last name
Had she known all about what happened to Morpheus and who imprisoned him? Did she hold contempt for Felicity despite the only thing tying her to the crime against her master was a simple name?
"You look stressed, are you feeling well?" Felicity jolted where she stood to see the librarian standing a few feet from her watching with keen eyes.
"I'm fine...Just tired." the girl placed a smile on her face despite it wholely being fake.
"If you need rest, please allow me to show you to one of our rooms. Lord Morpheus does not get guests very often but I will not assume he would mind it if you took some rest. It could be some time until he returns." Lucienne offered; it sounded like a kind offer so Felicity chose to take it.
She was tired; whether from simply being awake for an unknown amount of hours since she never got sleep after she got home. Or from her body draining itself from the realm of the Dreaming that she was not used to. Could one even sleep inside the Dreaming? She was about to find out. She allowed Lucienne to lead her through the large castle where Morpheus resided. She gazed around thinking that this place was something beautiful and magnificent once upon a time but most of which was in shambles thanks to its creator being gone for over a century. She could understand wanting to rebuild this grand city. From what Felicity was told, most of the attendees and residents of the Dreaming had left either thinking Morpheus abandoned them or others went in search of him.
It was sad really and she understood now why the lord of dreams was so adamant about finding his tools to rebuild his grand kingdom. She was shown to a room in the less destroyed part of the castle. Granted, it was still pretty rundown but it was much better in comparison to the other rooms. It had a bed and the weather was nice so she did not have to worry about being rained on even with a collapsed roof. She could see the stars above her; whole constellations and clouds of gasses, twinkling planets, and portals to different dimensions above her head. So she did not mind it as she lay on the large bed staring up at the sky through the broken ceiling. Even as she lay there she could not go to sleep instead, she just wondered until her eyes fluttered closed and her mind went blank.
Unknown to her as she rested in the guest wing. Lucienne the librarian was searching with haste through her library for a book that would tell all about the mysterious waking girl that resided within the Dreaming. But her findings came up short because she realized. According to the universe and its secrets that lay within the pages of every living human being awake and in the dreaming... Felicity Burgess did not exist.
~
She did not know how long she lay there. Dreaming or not dreaming. Simply lying with her eyes closed. The energy here in the Dreaming world was much different than that of the waking world. It held the energy and power that thrummed through her body that she had not felt since she had first been drawn to her basement door where Morpheus had been once imprisoned. But it was much more potent now that she was in the source. She could also ever say that Morpheus's presence was a lot more tangible and powerful than it had been before but that was a given since he is back where he belonged. With the pouch of sand that he has finally reclaimed he still has a lot of work to do to get back his helm of state and his ruby before the Dreaming could be back to it's normal glorious state.
Felicity hummed softly and rolled to her side; feeling as if she was being watched. She'd expected to see Matthew perched somewhere within the room but instead her eyes met a very troubled looking Morpheus standing in the shadows of the room. She startled and half rose to sit up.
"Morpheus? I didn't know you were back! how long have I been out?" she asked looking around as if she was trying to find a clock or something out of habit.
The lord of dreams did not say anything at first as his eyes, dark and lit with starlight in the shadows gazed at her. Although his face was passive and did not give away what he was feeling. There was something about the clench of his jaw and the way his eyes bore into her from afar that gave her the feeling that perhaps he was not happy with something. She could not help the shudder that raced down her spine as a fleeting thought crossed her mind that perhaps he wasn't happy with her.
"I have known Lucienne for centuries. She has never once lied to me and I in turn have always placed my trust in her abilities." the words were spoke low and measured as one black boot took a step closer to her.
"W-well yes, I would think so. She seems like a very knowledgeable and trustworthy person...What's all this about? Did something happen?" she rose from her resting place
"Who are you?" the question came a little harsher than probably intended and it made her look at him strangely.
"What are you talking about Morpheus? I'm Felicity, have you already forgotten?" she teased trying to keep the air that was starting to feel tight in her throat from suffocating her by breaking it was a jest.
"The library holds every single whole of those who dream. From those in the Dreaming and those in the Waking world."
"Yes, I know. Lucienne already explained it." Felicity raised a brow forcing a tight smile. "What's the matter with that?"
"I will ask you again. Who are you?" He stood right in front of her now staring down like a tall shadow; his black robe fluttering like smoke around his feet and for a good second, Felicity realized why he was called the king of dreams and ruler of the nightmare realms.
"Morpheus...I-I don't understand your question..." she swallowed thickly; her voice sounding weak even in her own ears. "You're scaring me." she whispered taking a step back until the back of her knees hit the edge of the bed and she was forced to sit. The dream king himself still inches from her never giving her room to breathe as he glared down at her.
With a voice so dark that her blood went cold and her vision dizzy he spoke "There is no book of a Felicity Burgess in the Library of Dreams."
"W-what are you saying Morpheus?" her voice quivered as she stared up with misty eyes feeling her heart beating like a trapped and scared rabbit in her chest.
He leaned down until they were eye to eye. "Felicity Burgess does not exist."
