What other Neil Gaiman work might you like?
The biggest thing to know about Neil Gaiman is that each work of his is a mixture of horror, fantasy, and subtle comedy.
That being said, each of his projects is pretty distinct from one another and there might be some that are more up to your tastes than others.
I haven't read some of his newer stuff (because I largely stopped reading as much since the early 2010s), but I'll do my best to remember what matters in other works.
Horror
The Sandman is a great work for horror fans. It's also great for mythology fans and other nerds, but horror is a major push and pull factors.
Tumblr media
The comic is probably the greatest body of work Gaiman produced and it's recommended if you're a goth at heart and are comfortable with themes of death and humans being gods' toys.
The Sandman (TV) is a great adaptation, but it's very short so far and doesn't cover the best stories.
Coraline is a horror story for children. It doesn't have anything that's not suitable for kids, but it can be viscerally scary to some people. Both the book and the film are great.
Tumblr media
Mirrormask is my personal favourite, it's a low budget film with mindblowing surreal imagery and one of the best soundtracks ever.
Tumblr media
It's about a teenage girl who has troubles with her parents (who run a circus, btw) and who gets swiped up by her imagination into a bizarre world that is being eaten by her depression. Not a scary film, per se, but it's disturbing. However, it's a very warm film and it always makes me feel better.
Fantasy
Neverwhere is set in a dimension of twisted London Underground where everything that's straightforward in our world becomes weird and too real.
Tumblr media
It really tickled my imagination, I highly recommend the book.
Stardust is set in a more high fantasy setting.
Tumblr media
It features kings, witches, ghosts, and a star that fell to the Earth. It has a young protagonist who's not exactly the best or the brightest person, so if you hate such things, stick to the adaptation. In my opinion, the book is just lovely.
American Gods is a darker fantasy that asks the questions: "What if every god people ever believed in became real through the power of their worship? And then what if that worship started fading?"
Tumblr media
It's set in the USA and because that country is such a melting pot, there are many gods. And not all of them are happy. This is the book that gave Neil Gaiman his reputation of a writer who loves weird sex scenes.
Humour
Stardust the film is often compared to Princess Bride. It's lighthearted, funny, full of imaginative adventures.
Tumblr media
Just a very nice film with an all-star cast.
Anansi Boys is a spin off of American Gods, but it's a lot more lighthearted.
Tumblr media
Anansi is a trickster god, so you know things will get funky.
I haven't read The Graveyard Book and The Ocean at the End of the Lane yet, but I hear they're very good as well.
Also, short story collections or Norse Mythology might be a good place to start if you want to get a feel of Neil Gaiman as an author first.

neil josten’s complex kiss analysis
can we talk about neil’s first kiss for a hot minute?
ok so here’s the thing. yes, we can all agree neil is a questionable narrator but consider the way he describes his first kiss with andrew:
"andrew kissed him like this was a fight with their lives on the line, like his world stopped and started with neil's mouth."
this is an intense portrayal of a kiss that goes beyond mere romance. have you ever thought about the deeper meaning behind neil's words? why would he even describe it that way? for someone who has never even fathomed kissing anyone, why would he describe it so intensely? think about it, neil's life has indeed been filled with survival instincts and a constant need to stay on guard due to his troubled past. when andrew kisses him, it's likely a powerful and overwhelming experience for neil, as he might subconsciously associate it with the intensity of survival mode.
see, neil's life has been shaped by a rollercoaster of danger, abuse, and evading deadly threats from a young age so he’s become a master at staying alive. surviving has been his primary skill, and his instincts are always on high alert, just like the when he is in a fight for his life. so, when andrew kissed him, it's only natural for neil to draw a comparison because our boy was caught off guard. so, andrew's passion and intensity may have reminded neil of the survival mode he's been living in for so long, hence the sudden tilt and shift of the world beneath him that he experiences post kiss.
in this light, andrew's kiss becomes more than just a romantic gesture. it represents a moment of vulnerability for neil. throughout his life, he's learned to shield himself emotionally, keeping his guard up to protect against any harm that might come his way. but andrew's kiss breaks through those barriers, leaving neil exposed and defenseless, much like the vulnerability he experiences when he is forced into his aliases to stay alive.
besides, our darling goth babygirl andrew here plays a significant role in neil's journey towards growth and healing. the trust and connection they share gradually guide neil away from a life solely centered on survival and toward a path of understanding and acceptance. andrew's passion to protect neil at all costs contrasts neil's survival instincts, showing him that life is about more than just making it through the day.
(ps. i personally think that the way he describes every single interaction with andrew is just so beautiful.)

This has been haunting my head forever, but as we all know Robert Smith was the leading inspiration for Dream in the comics with more than a bit of Neil sprinkled in there (and a few other goth rock bands like Bauhaus' Peter Murphy) and I just can't get over the image of a goth rockstar Dream.
It's the late 70s, and our boy Dream is riding a creative high of LSD and pedal effects to the top of the pops. They're calling the band he fronts, name and members are up to you or whoever takes this idea on, Goth bc they're too dark for New Wave but are just upbeat enough to steer clear of Televison's particular brand of Post-Punk. It's a newer label but a fitting one considering how dour and moody the genre has gotten since Ian Curtis's death. One he despises as he claims he's very happy with his current success and how his life is going.
But he's not happy. He hates playing to the newly forming stereotype of his fans, but he isn't. Celebrity Marriages hardly ever last and his relationship with his novelist wife is crumbling around him. He loves his son but the touring schedule is killing all of his free time. He's also pretty deep into substance abuse but he wouldn't admit it to his big sister let alone the random journo who has a camera in his face while he's trying to catch a 5:30 am flight to start his newest tour. He's just burnt out and creatively stuck as the label tries to pigeonhole him into this new subgenre, which he doesn't want anymore. Life, his life, can't be doom and gloom forever even though that's where it looks like it's heading. Forever being hailed as the Nightmare King.
Meanwhile, three radio stations over, Hob Gadling is desperately trying to hang onto life. He's a bit older now than when he first broke out onto the music scene as a rambunctious coat rider of the Sex Pistols, but he's still going strong. Punk has always been his outlet. Life sucks and you keep on living despite it. It tried to kill him not long after he debuted with substance use, but he powered through it and got clean. His wife died in childbirth, but he stuck around to raise his son. He even took a three-year hiatus and completely missed how much the sound had changed from his younger years. Even as post-punk has risen in popularity and the friends he knew have either died or changed their sound completely, he won't give up hope! Punk's not dead and neither is he. No matter how long his hair gets or if he grows out of his leather jacket.
The two meet rather coincidentally. Hob just happens to be opening for Dream on the Europe leg of his tour. Unsurprisingly the tension around Dream's band has become a powder keg and when he finally snaps and fires his guitarist, his bassist also leaves. With half the band gone, Dream considers calling it quits right then and there. Fuck the new album, fuck the last fifteen or so dates. He wants to go home. But Hob sees how close they are to finishing the tour and puts his foot down. They will finish the tour! So he offers up his services to Dream. He's not bad with a guitar and if Dream can cover the bass, then he'll play all night if he has to. Because out there on stage? That's life and he wants to keep making people happy and give them something that might transcend time and space. To never die bc his name is there among the annuls of rock history.
And in time, Dream will come around to his new friend. He will learn to appreciate the zest for performing and living his new friend has. He will also think he has the greatest body known to man and will forever laugh at the terribly done anarchy A Hob has tattooed on his ass, but that's neither for here or there. For now, Dream pulls himself together and gets his bass out from the dark pits of hell the roadies call gear storage. For the show must go on.
Oh god I want an entire novel length story around this. It’s fantastic! I have so many thoughts about these two!!
Hob is falling in love with all the new sounds that he’s hearing. He spent his time on his hiatus being a suburban dad, and now he’s back on the scene is just feels amazing. He can’t get enough of Roxy Music and David Bowie and Elvis Costello. And he’s determined to drag himself back up among those names! He’s got so many ideas of where punk can go! And he’s fascinated by Dream and his band. The lyrics are a little dark and wallowy, but Hob understands that actually people need to hear that. Life in the UK isn’t easy, particularly for young people. They need something loud and desperate and real. Little does he know, Dream feels like what he’s doing is so far away from being real. He feels likes such a fraud. He can’t get off the hamster wheel except by shooting up and passing out.
Hob recognises all of this in approximately 0.5 seconds after meeting Dream. It makes him pretty sad, but he’s determined that he’ll lift Dream out of his funk. If nothing else, he’ll make him love music again.
So when Hob said he was OK with a guitar, he was lying - he's actually a bit of a genius, and it's fair to say that Dream falls a little bit in love with him about half way through the sound check. Instead of hiding in the dressing room and licking his wounds over the band breaking up, he actually watches as Hob opens for him. Hob is very classic punk, it's all very "fuck the government, fuck me up the arse" kind of stuff, but Dream doesn't get bored for a single second. Hob is just that entertaining, and his riffs are insane. Dream itches to write a song for him. And when Hob ends the set with a jokey little song that his five year old son allegedy wrote the lyrics for (lil Robyn is very punk, just like his daddy) Dream’s eyes actually get a bit misty. It's probably all the smoke.
And there's really no time to get emotional! Dream’s drummer, Constantine, thankfully didn't walk out with the rest of them. So somehow, with Hob’s virtuosic guitar skills and sheer determination, plus Dream’s refusal to fail yet again, they actually make a really decent show. Dream feels a tingle of the old spark that he used to get when he first started out - it probably has something to do with the way Hob upends a bottle of water all over his head half way through the show and grins like a maniac.
After the show they crash in a local hotel. Hob calls his kid from the payphone and Dream wishes that he had the courage to do the same. Instead he takes some pills so he doesn't have to feel the high from the show gradually wearing off into nothingness. He doesn't know why Hob comes and sits next to him in the dark, pressing against him from thigh to shoulder. He stays for the whole of Dream’s trip, in fact, humming something quiet and classic. Dream feels quite ashamed of himself, and for the first time he thinks that maybe he'd feel better without the drugs. Maybe.
As the tour gets off to a slow start, Dream starts to notice that Hob is having some kind of positive effect on him. Just little thing. They get breakfast together, so Dream actually eats something, which is unusual. Their little arguments don't get out of hand, because Hob never lets them escalate. When Dream is angry and spitting at the world, Hob is sure to point of something positive. Not that Hob doesn't get sad, too - he just deals with it differently. He goes for long walks, and turns off the news when it gets bad. He gets himself a snack when he's irritable, and laughs about it afterwards.
Dream writes him a near impossible guitar solo and it feels like a "thank you".
They have a sweet, unexpected first kiss. It's 2am and they're standing at the edge of the road, waiting for a mechanic to come out to their broken down tour bus. There's no one around to see, so Dream rests his head on Hob’s shoulder. He's sore, and weary. Hob turns his head slightly and tucks an arm around him, and it just happens. They kiss. It is, of course, the first of many.
And you can bet that Dream kisses that anarchy tattoo a million time, too.

What I think Andrew and Neil’s personality/life/relationship will be like without ALL the trauma and so the “real” them without all the baggage
(Obviously just my opinion and interpretation)
Andrew:
He would still be a super protective person especially as those he views as family (nicky, Aaron, his parents (??), friends he knows he can trust)
Would still have gone through a goth/grunge phrase
His sweet tooth is still atrocious
The type of guy to stop people from physically bullying others (verbally he does not care if the person can’t take it its a them problem)
Tons of piercings everywhere
Doesn’t try in school because he doesn’t have to with his eidetic memory yet he is only second right behind Aaron
No one is shocked that he is gay
I can see him studying things like philosophy literature classics history or just any of the intellectual degrees (he will do double major)
Definitely got scholarships for any universities he applied to (same as Aaron)
Chooses to go to the university that Aaron chooses (“Andrew ucla’s criminology is the best in the whole world why are you choosing John Hopkins” “John Hopkins’s literature and classics is the best in the world” “Andrew-“)
Doesn’t have a lot of people he considers as friends but he does have a select fews and he is not really in a friend group more like some scattered friends but he hoard like gold
Most likely to become a university professor ? Or a baker or whatever he wants and he will be so successful in it because he will put his heart and soul into it
Had a few flings here and there (maybe one or two relationships but no one can ever be on par with him) until he meets Neil (because in every universe they are still meant to be)
Neil:
Still skeptical and doesn’t trust easily
Those he considers as friends he holds on so tight he will literally die and kill for them
Still got a smart mouth that gets him in trouble
Troublemaker in school and people either love or hate him theres no in between
Math nerd
Would have been valedictorian but he doesn’t pay attention in class and skip classes if his friends ask him to
He will be in a friend group that everyone will ride and die for each other and is the friend group that everyone is envious of because they know it is for life even if they all separate in university
Obviously he will get a maths degree
Becomes mathematician or whatever it is smart people becomes in the future
Obviously he will be successful as well
Even in university he will somehow find a friend group and once again its the best people in the world for him and now he got THREE families (or however many because everywhere he goes this attractive troublemaker just attracts and makes his own found family without meaning to)
Throughout highschool or university or work (until he meets Andrew) he would have never dated because he genuinely does not get the point and no one ever interests him that way (until he meets Andrew)
Andreil:
No matter how they meet whether its highschool or in university or meet cute or meet ugly or whatever its always Andrew that falls first and finds the troublemaker attractive and neil is just the oblivious guy
But Neil is always the one that falls harder
Its always slowburn and kills their families and friends and makes everyone wants to just kill them
Their communication skills are what every couple wishes they have
Andrew still gives neil so much nicknames
Their personality will always complement each other and Neil’s fire will always spark’s Andrew’s interest and Andrew’s steady presence will always hold up whatever Neil has
The soul deep understanding will always be there
In any universe they will still inevitably end up together because their souls are made for each other

Reflecting on the Sandman Series
MAJOR SANDMAN COMIC SPOILERS‼
‼‼‼SANDMAN SPOILERS‼‼‼
So I just finished the comic and first off, I have to preface this by saying that Neil Gaiman is an AMAZING author and it truly is one of my favorite works of fiction of all time, Morpheus being probably my favorite character of all time. After sobbing for hours following the ending, though, I have many thoughts.
To say I am heartbroken is a SEVERE understatement. Words cannot explain the grief the latter part of this series gave me, but I am going to try.
This isn't at all to blame Gaiman for my grief, as I caused it myself. But a major reason I became so incredibly attached to this series is because I am struggling with finding happiness and love in life, myself. And for the majority of the series, we see an entity, weighed down and tormented by the darkest things humanity can dream of in all the universe on a daily. He's been alone, depressed, and not truly in love (more on this later) since close to the beginning of time. However, despite everything he has to put up with, having the universe against him it seems like, and being forced to be alone with his thoughts for the closer part of a century, he starts to change.
This change is what drew me into the series. The small interactions he had with others, teaching him, or reminding him more-so, of empathy and compassion and that even something as omniscient as him can feel love. For the majority of the series, this is shown through multiple arcs and characters of course, the last true one being his journey with Delirium. The series fills you with hope, even references the importance of hope itself, over and over, making you believe that perhaps Dream CAN view the universe differently, and become happier through doing so. I grew attached to Morpheus, seeing myself in him as he tried to learn to become happier and to love.
That is, of course, until the end of the journey with Delirium. When Dream met with Destiny and learned about what he would do to Orpheus, I knew something was changing, but I had no idea it would signal the end of him, of everything really. This was a turning point in the series where Dream went from finding small joys, humors, and delights in other beings, not of his creation, to....essentially giving up. He still had empathy, of course, but in a remorseful way. He was not finding joy in his interactions with anyone after this, not even his last meeting with Hob.
Morpheus had changed, but not in the optimistic way the series implied he would up until then. He learned to be compassionate, but at the same time, the walls holding up his emotions for all of eternity, finally came crashing down, and they took him with it.
At least, that's how I interpret it.
Earlier in the series, it is referenced that Dream originally wasn't goth/depressed/whatever you want to call him, and actually shone like a rainbow, radiant and happy with his first love. But after Desire made her leave, Dream became who we know him as for the rest of time. All of his succeeding lovers, in my perspective, he did not truly love.
He thought he did, saying he would give them anything that they could ever want and burning them with his "all-consuming" passion, as Calliope put it, but I don't believe it was love. It was infatuation. In every case after his first love, Killala, he barely even knew these women before pledging unending loyalty to them, only to lose interest in due time.
I don't believe Dream ever was close with anyone truly. His only two friends, Hob and Matthew, barely knew him. He never spoke of himself to anyone, likely not even his lovers, as mentioned during their affairs that he was more interested in knowing about them. Dream never allowed anyone close enough to him to hear his grievances, to know his deepest feelings, except perhaps Death on a few occasions.
Then, after closing off his emotions entirely for eons (besides his brief heartbreaks from his affairs), they all came flooding back to him when forced to finally confront his son, who he had never let himself grieve for after two millennia. I think this scene was so much more than just about Orpheus, it's when Dream likely felt everything he had suppressed since the beginning of time with his first loss of Killala and betrayal of Desire. He felt that he had no further loose ends after dealing with his son, knowing he had fixed any wrongdoings he could since his escape from his entrapment. He never let himself be someone, always confining himself to his realm and creations. Putting his passion into someone, only to lose it when he realized they were not who he wanted them to be.
I wondered why Gaiman made the final issue of the series about the second Shakespearean play for Morpheus. How could any side story possibly be relevant after seeing his death and the creation of the new Dream? That was, until the last few panels where Morpheus reflects on who he is.
"I am prince of stories, Will, but I have no story of my own. Nor shall I ever."
That's how he had always felt, disconnected from the universe and not associating with humanity the way his siblings could. He never saw himself as important, only his position. Only defined by his responsibilities and role as Dream. That's why he never allowed himself to truly let anyone know him: Hob, Calliope, Matthew, Death, anyone. He cared for them and loved them more than they probably know, but he did not believe himself worthy of their love, or of anyone's. And in the end, he found solace in leaving his realm and all of life where these feelings that had consumed him could no longer.
The dream Hob had about him, after Morpheus' death, was just another punch in the throat to me. Sure, he was with Hob and Destruction and surrounded by beautiful places as a Star, but even in death, he did not seem happy. He still looked lost, empty, and as sad as he had throughout most of the series, if not even more-so.
So, to conclude, this comic has partially ruined my view on life. The hope it gave me in the beginning was playing out in my own life, inspiring me to maybe try and find love in small ways in this world, the way Morpheus was learning to. But in the end, he never did find it, at least nothing strong enough to make him stay, and I think part of me died along with him. This is a beautiful story, and I'd recommend it to everyone, but it has most definitely torn me apart.

10 fandoms / 10 characters / 10 tags ヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノヽ(✿゚▽゚)ノ
Gracias a @rainy-days-and-nights por el tag!
Cloud Strife/ Final Fantasy 7
The original blorbo, my first love (the one you never forget), my first wet and sad man, the one hero who had mental illness before it was cool (jk, however It was the first I got to know), for him I downloaded the anime OVA in a process that took 3 days and 5 hrs per day on my local internet shop and i bought the original Advent Children movie and the extended. He defined my taste in fictional men.
Uriko/ Bloody Roar 2
My first crush, she made me a furry before I even knew what a furry was, she awoke in me my taste for fighting women and catgirls. Silly little weapon of mass destruction, best girl, best playable character in Bloody Roar (yes, Im biased, no I don't look to be corrected)
Raine Sage/Tales of Symphonia
I wanted to be her when i grew up, now older I come to undestand that maybe I wanted to fu--*gets kicked*
Best archealogist, best sister, takes no ones bullshit. What the world of research needs.
Roxas/ Kingdom Hearts
Righ in my teenager era, thought it was Cloud so I looked, stayed because of the tragic existencialism, best angry boy, he has never done anything wrong on his life, kicked Riku's ass like a pro, fave resident in Sora's Heart hotel. A little gremling out for blood.
Maka Albarn/ Soul Eater
My irrevocable call that I was, in fact, not straight. The most cool female character I had ever seen, fuck the perfect stereotype (even thou she was the academic sterotype of perfect student) she was a messy bitch with angry issues and it was so fucking healing to see her being that way. Made me realice you can have a boyfriend and a nonbinary partner at the same time.
Aqua/ Kingdom Hearts
My wife, she carries the whole BBS game on her back, not because something arbitrary like most powerful keyblade wilder (which she is) nor because she is the only one who becomes master of her group (wich she does) but because she, literally, pass the whole game, pulling together the shit her idiotic himbo crush and her best friend do during all the game. Her movements while fighting are top 1000 of sexy things
Riku/ Kingdom Hearts
He is the representation of the queer journey made game character, the ironic fact that he is the closest to the mascot of all that represents capitalism is incredible good for social study. Seeing him growing on the story resonated with my growing into a lgbta+ person and now we are both happy with who we are.
Dante/ Devil May Cry
I literally buyed the whole tri-pack of the DMC saga back in 2013 when I didn't even had a PS2, just to play it in a console a friend let me borrow. All the bro dudes buying his bad boy persona when he is a fucking depressed man that only knows happiness when he has his brother back, looked for the sexyness and irreverent style, stayed for the tragic sibling drama.
Dream/ The Sandman
The blorbo that pretty much brough me back to Tumblr. Goth, sad, twink, depressed, divorced dad of one poor soul with the most toxic family ever. Neil Gaiman saw that one comic about giving robot feelings and decided to do the same with concepts. No Neil, you didn’t give it feelings, you fucked up a concept.
Loki/ Marvel MCU
Sad wet snake, with queer tendencys ignored by most of marvel who is made justice on fanart/fanfic. My favourite "redemption" trope. Mama's boy. HE USES MAGIC, CAN SHAPESHIFT AND FIGHTS WITH KNIVES. May hate the world but loves his brother, that gets me every time. I just want them to be happy

Netflix’s Goth Technophobes
I kind of love that two of Netflix’s biggest shows depict characters who have an aversion to technology.
First we have Morpheus from Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.  He’s roughly ten billion years old and doesn’t know how to drive and has never used a phone (not even a rotary one).   He also has a great deal of trouble understanding casual slang from his sister, Death, and his raven, Matthew.
Tumblr media
Then we have Wednesday Addams in the new Addams Family spin-off, Wednesday.  She refuses to use a smart phone all through the first season and is given one at the end of the season finale however though she does know how to use it, according to one of the show runners, she very likely tossed it out the window of the car after the credits started rolling.   Thing (the disembodied hand) might end up using it instead.
Wednesday loves to write but uses a typewriter instead of a latop or desktop PC.  She essentially acts and dresses as if she just crawled out of the Victorian era. My guestimation would be 1897-ish.
Tumblr media
There’s something weirdly refreshing about these old fashioned Goth protagonists and their aversion to tech.   It means the writers have to be creative working out how these characters handle situations that generally would be easy to resolve if they had a smart phone. It keeps the writers on their toes and leaves room for creative problem solving within the story where something might have been too easily resolved with the tech.
It also helps remind the audience that these particular characters are timeless.  One is an immortal being who rules over our dreams.  The other is a Goth little girl who has been pretty consistently depicted since the 1930s without much (if any) real change in characterization.
These are beings who (though for different reasons) exist outside of time.  They are in essence “Story.”  They are timeless and classic and aren’t bound by the constraints of the era they were created in, nor do they conform to what is convenient for this time period.  They are outside of the norm.
I feel the best Gothic characters aren’t constrained by any time period and often work best without state-of-the-art technology shackling them to the moment and allowing them to become dated later.
Long live the Goth technophobes!
Disclaimer: I am not just writing this because I’m also a Goth luddite whose only technology is a fairly new PC and I haven’t used or owned a smart phone in at least six months...   Don’t look at me that way!  These are my people!

Mystery Kids: Classic Monsters Headcanons:
Dipper: Werewolf
Tumblr media
.Transforms at night regardless of the moon’s phase.
.Often becomes ridden with fleas and ticks, so he takes frequent baths and has a faint scent of oatmeal.
.Like with Coraline and Lili, he can’t eat with silver spoons, forks, or knives, so has to use plastic utensils.
.Has the urge to chase animals like the cat and waddles but never kills them.
.Chews random objects like his pen, the TV remote, pillows, etc.
Mabel: Witch
Tumblr media
.Is in charge of finding a cure or reverse spell to change the guys back, with little success.
.Often recites different phrases and quotes from movies involving magic and witches.
.Throws enchanted kitchen dance parties with plates flying, loud music (jump in the line) and playing limbo with her broom.
.Goes foraging for ingredients with Dipper and his sense of smell, either looking for hair from a gnome, fungus from a gremlobin’s shoulders, sweat from a manotaur, etc (Yeah, just about every gross thing you can find in Gravity Falls. Poor Dipper)
.Attempts to convince the others to try her new spooky makeup ideas like carefully braiding Lili’s sentient snake hair or applying goth makeup for Coraline’s pale cheeks, lips and eyelids.
Coraline: Vampire
Tumblr media
.Doesn't need to drink blood but finds herself eating and drinking red stuff like apples or cranberry juice.
.Her eyes have become more sensitive to bright lights and colors. She even wears more darker clothing as opposed to her usual fashion to make it easier on them.
.She can transform into different animals. (Such as a bat, cat, mouse, wolf etc.)
.Crawls up walls and hangs from ceilings. Sometimes you can find her ranting while pacing upside down.
.She doesn't have a reflection in mirrors and is bummed about it but Mabel support her by saying, "Girl, you look good in everything! Even with blood red eyes and a ghostly pale face."
.She can mesmerize others but this requires her full concentration to keep them under her control and can only hypnotize a few people at close range.
Wybie: Reanimated Corpse (Frankenstein’s Monster)
Tumblr media
.Runs on electricity so needs to recharge every so often. When he’s low he becomes sluggish and unproductive with making his projects.
.Can’t feel pain so he doesn’t notice one of his arms rips off again or even if he’s on fire from another failed experiment.
.He can transfer his electricity to machines, appliances and even his own inventions.
.Can also collect energy from outside sources but has to be mindful of much energy he’s absorbing. If not released, his behavior changes as he is more hyper and aggressive and can burn himself out.
.Luckily he is filled with cotton, but this leaves the others perplexed on how he can eat and drink if he doesn't have a stomach.
Norman: Dullahan (Headless Horseman)
Tumblr media
.Aside from his head, the rest of his body is merely a whole suit of armor.
.Like with Wybie, he can also eat and drink despite not having any organs below. Where does it all go? Maybe we’ll never know.
.He has the power to summon an undead steed to get around. He will only ever let Norman ride him and is is rather affectionate towards him.
.If his head is lost or misplaced, it can be called back to his body using some sort of “spectral tether”.
.His head is engulfed in a green spectral flame. These flames either weaken or rise depending on his emotions.
Neil: Gargoyle
Tumblr media
.Like Coraline, he can't survive in sunlight or else he'll turn into a lifeless statue unless he's pulled back into darkness.
.He's extremely tough and durable. If he were to ever fall from a great height, the crash would barely leave a scratch.
.He can change from gargoyle to human, not completely though.
.He can breath fire but if he spews too much in a short time, he'll become lightheaded and dizzy, since it takes a lot of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Raz: Swamp Creature (Creature of the Black Lagoon)
Tumblr media
.He’s thrilled his new form allows to enjoy being water (Though only in fresh water).
.It also gives him to opportunity to further expand his hydrokinesis.
.Due to being amphibious, he can’t go too long without water (whether by swimming in or drinking it) and gets dehydrated quickly.
.Often gets static shocked by Wybie just by standing next to him.
.Gives him an idea for a new stunt for the circus like” The Flying Fish Boy and his rings of water!".
.Can't eat food containing a lot of salt or else his mouth and throat will dry.
Lili: Gorgon (Medusa)
Tumblr media
.The others are immune to her petrifying gaze as they were all cursed with the same spell.
.Often makes death threats like paralyzing them with her venom or constricting them with her long tail.
.Her hair snakes express her emotions like whenever she kisses Raz's cheek, they give him little pecks all over his face.
.Gloats about being technically taller than Coraline now.
.Has to wear a blindfold when people are around. Luckily, her clairvoyance makes up for that and also has Raz to guide her while holding his hand.

BLACK ORCHIDS, BLUE LILIES, AND BLEEDING HEARTS
I wanted to do a “capsule reviews of random obscurities” type of post. I didn’t anticipate a theme would emerge of how the potential exhibited by unfinished work might be superior to work that concludes in an unsatisfying way.
BLACK ORCHID
Tumblr media
Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean did a three-issue miniseries reviving a forgotten DC superhero before getting The Sandman off the ground, and while that comic has been kept in print, that’s not what I read. What I got the urge to track down (after seeing pages on Tumblr) was the attempt at an ongoing series circa the 1993 launch of Vertigo that’s never been reprinted, written by a dude, Dick Foreman, who didn’t have much of a career in comics but I believe remained friends with Alan Moore — He was a contributor to Dodgem Logic and (maaaaybe? This is a vague memory) got a shout-out in the From Hell annotations for some kind of research assistance. The first few issues are GREAT. Jill Thompson handles the art, and she really is just a rock-solid storyteller, nailing backgrounds and body language and favoring straightforward grids. The story, as people in the letter column point out, is a Thelma And Louise riff: We’ve got this one woman with hypnotic mind control powers, and we’ve got the woman she’s manipulated into being her best friend, and they’re on the run from an scientific/governmental organization. There’s a supporting cast of likable people established that our hero is implicitly manipulating, generating some tension. Each issue is pretty self-contained, they get into some Vertigo horror/fantasy shenanigans.  One of these is a Swamp Thing crossover, I don’t have the Swamp Thing issue, drawn by Rebecca Guay, who becomes the series’ regular artist once Jill Thompson leaves. Guay is not nearly as solid an artist, and Foreman’s stories get more fantasy-oriented in a way that leaves me cold. It’s cool the creative team abandons any pretense to superheroics, but since the shift in ambition coincides with the loss of a storyteller that can ground it, I may discard all the Guay issues. With Jill Thompson there really is a high level of control over the visual storytelling that allows the writing to do ambitious things, structurally and with language, but also chill out and let moments exist.
Foreman was supposed to do a creator-owned series with Vertigo called The Rites Of Alchemy, illustrated by Paul Johnson, that never came out, though the completed work was posted on a blog maintained by the book’s assistant editor.
The covers are by Dave McKean, really rocking that early nineties 4AD kinda vibe. DC isn’t having his art on the covers of the newer Sandman reprints, favoring an illustration-style approach to the goth vibe. It’s interesting, the design choices of pre-Vertigo really were meant to signal “THIS ISN’T LIKE OTHER COMICS,” but now DC really does want to present that stuff as part  and parcel with what they regularly do. Different times! Comics are more widely accepted culturally, but they’re also a lot worse.
THE BLUE LILY
Tumblr media
I think the only person I’ve ever seen talk about this comic is Joe McCulloch tweeting about it. I know Angus McKie as the person who handled computer coloring for Dave Gibbons on the Martha Washington series, I would not have expected his authorial sensibility to be that of a post-underground cartoonist who is making a lot of jokes as he makes a very dense genre pastiche. He also doesn’t over-model the coloring on his own stuff, which would surely make this unreadable. There’s a lot of text on these pages, each issue is 48 pages long. This was originally meant to be a 4-issue miniseries but it got canceled halfway through, but what exists is still fairly satisfying, and somewhat exhausting. Tonally and visually, it’s reminiscent of Mack White or Tim Lane, only doing a noir riff in a science-fiction setting where the private eye is a robot, which is honestly more ambitious than those dudes would do, but the tone is thoughtful and comedic enough that it never tips into that genre mashup style I find so distasteful. McKie is also known for a book published by Heavy Metal (and partially adapted for the movie) called So Beautiful And So Dangerous, but I don’t know anything about that.
STORYTELLER
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I came across two (late, non-consecutive) issues of the Barry Windsor-Smith comic Storyteller at cover price in a shop and honestly just wanted to brag about it. Really beautiful color and format. He’s serializing three stories, two of which got conclusions in graphic novel collections Fantagraphics put out. I am going to convince myself I have no interest in being a completist about this work, that reading a graphic novel collection would be unsatisfying on a narrative level, what makes this comic fun is the ambition of it -- I’m interested in seeing the process of BWS trying to get somewhere, less so in where he’s trying to go. All of these things are trying to be comedies to some extent, nothing is as out-and-out dark as Monsters is, and his sense of humor seems kind of dumb. But he’s a really dense storyteller, he’s making sure that every story moves forward on every page, even if it’s sort of incremental or picaresque none of it ever feels like filler. It’s a really ambitious comic but it’s easy to imagine the fans of good comics in 1997 being put off by how the cover of every issue depicts fantasy images of either a viking warrior or a maiden showing her cleavage at way larger dimensions than anything else on the racks. I think of BWS as working a similar vein to Michael Kaluta -- this fantasy style that has seemed out of date the entire time I’ve been reading comics -- Kaluta being who they’ve got doing the covers to the new Sandman trades.
BLEEDING HEART
Tumblr media
This was a one-person anthology series Fantagraphics ran in the early nineties by Peter Kuper, whose later Vertigo miniseries The System may have competed with Storyteller for a comic buyer’s dollar. Kuper does a pretty cool style with spray paint over stencils that is as appealing as it is plainly labor-intensive. In The System we get a full color version, though here he just does it in black and white, alongside stuff done with a pen. He’s mostly known as a political cartoonist, one of the founders of World War 3 Illustrated, and he basically connects the lineage between woodcut books and Banksy. Here we also get him doing autobio comics about how he jerks off, that classic early nineties alt-comics comedy routine, that comes off charming here due to the context of Kuper doing enough other stuff to not get pigeon-holed.
BAOBAB
Tumblr media
I was trying to figure out if this Igort comic, that had three issues published as part of the Ignatz line co-published by Fantagraphics and Coconino, ever got a conclusion and a book collection in Italy. I didn’t find that out. What I did find was Teddy Kristiansen -- known in the U.S. primarily for this work on Vertigo comics like Sandman -- rating each issues 5 stars on Goodreads. I wouldn’t have thought to make that associative leap, although Joe McCulloch, writing about his issue of Solo, did compare one story to the Loustal/Paringaux collaborations. Baobab is beautiful: A story of comics in the early twentieth century, evolving in parallel across continents with different visual traditions, that really works the angle that the way to pay homage to Feininger and Herriman is to experiment with visual language. A plot point, that newspaper serialization can be interrupted by political events, roughly foreshadows the story’s interrupted and abbreviated form. That a work in progress can nonetheless engage its readers is explicitly text here. I still think there is likely a great number of greater effects a work of this caliber and ambition could achieve were it to come to a conclusion, but for now I’ll have to seek the potential narrative satisfaction that would follow from finding a copy of the first issue, which I still have yet to track down.

"Just as moments spent inside the chamber of a Neolithic tomb seem to occur in a place adrift from the modern, so that crypt belongs to a world that is otherwise beyond our reach”.
Neil Oliver.
(This is the second in my two-part series; please see here for the first).
Repton Abbey was founded in the 7th century and was launched into the religion and politics of Anglo-Saxon Mercia, whose capital was at nearby Tamworth. Monks and nuns lived together in this abbey, whose earliest recorded abbess was Saint Werburgh, daughter of Wulfhere, King of Mercia.
The crypt was laid down soon afterwards, which John Betjeman called “holy air encased in stone”. Buried here are King Aethelbald of Mercia (d. 757), King Wiglaf of Mercia (d. 839) and Wiglaf’s grandson, Saint Wystan (d. 840).
Murdered by his cousin, Wystan became famed for the healing poer of his relics, though his protection did not stop the Great Heathen Army of Vikings sacking Repton in 873-4, billeting themselves here in the winter and destroying the abbey, except the crypt.
(Modern science has backed up the historians; a mass grave of mostly men is believed after radiocardbon testing to be Viking warriors and their followers, and the Repton Stone, found in 1979, is believed to be Aethelbald. I saw the Repton Stone at Derby Museum and it was one of the factors that mde me come here).
The Vikings drove King Burgred into exile in 874 and ruled this part of Mercia until 937, when Athelstan forged the first united state of England, joining Mercia with its neighbours (which it had fought against, tuled, been ruled by and lived in an uneasy peace with, before coming together in one English state) and beating the Vikings and their allies.
After this Repton became more obscure, far from political power and with the bishops based in Lichfield; after the Normans conquered England from the Anglo-Saxons in 1066, they recorded Repton in the Domesday Book of 1086, but not as a major town.
Although the Anglo-Saxons had rebuilt the abbey after 874, little remained by the 12th century, so Maud of Glouceser built Repton Priory in its stead in 1172  and a medieval town grew up around it and the church, dedicated to the martyred Wystan. Most of the church you see in this shoot, apart from the crypt which is earlier, is from that time.
The priory thrived quietly until 1536, when Henry VIII forcibly changed England’s religion from the Catholic faith, which it had followed since before Wystan, to the new Protestantism. The church became what it is now, an Anglican parish church, and on the site of the abbey Repton School, which also still exists, was founded on money left by John Port of Etwall on his death in 1557.
Repton did not become a major industrial town (please see my earlier post for more) and so became a quiet town focused on church, school, and gradually the suburbs of Derby.
Arthur Blomfield oversaw a restoration in 1885-86 in the Gothic Revival style; the goths were never happier than when finding a true medieval survival to work on, and what you now see is thanks to their respectful building on what they found.
In the graveyard are Repton men such as the headmaster Henry Robert Huckin (1841-82) and CB Fry, described as “ Cricketer, scholar, athlete, Author – The Ultimate All-rounder”.
The church and school spirit of service and self-sacrifice made itself known in good times and in bad, the worst being the two world wars we remember today (please see here for more); the war memorials tell of the 255 dead of World War 1 and the 188 of World War 2.
The crypt had been boarded and floored over for hundreds of years and, though found in 1779 was not fully appreciated until it was restored in 1998 and this has brought back to us what we see today.
Described by Nikolaus Pevsner as  "one of the most precious survivals of Anglo-Saxon architecture in England", this capped an otherwise boring drive home from my brother’s home in another Mercian town, Bedford, and it will be a fixture of my journeys from now on.

Ford: How would you like to go see the school counselor?!
Raz: How would you like to suck my balls?
*The whole class gasps*
Ford: What did you say?!
Raz: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Actually, what I said was... *He picks up a megaphone* HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SUCK MY BALLS, MR. PINES?
*Ford is so furious that no word comes out of his mouth*
Norman: Holy shit, dude.
Neil: You guys never help me! Your stories never go anywhere! I hate it! I want out! I want out!

Raz: Hey!
Wybie: Gramma!
Lucille: What?
Wybie: The metaphors, man!
Lucille: Oh, sorry.
Dipper: Well, how about we just say, "corporates should be stopped"?
Norman: How do we stretch that into five minutes?
Wybie: They're taking my underpants!
Dipper: Will you stop with the underpants gnomes, Wybes?! We have to work here!
Wybie: *points at the gnomes* Aaahh!
Norman: *Sees the gnomes* What the hell?
Raz: Well, I'll be damned.
Norman: Nobody's stopping Bill Cipher now! All will be sadness. Life will become death, and I will watch the crimson blood pooling from your neck.
Lili: Whoa. This guy is so goth.
Kubo: Hey dudes. *the Mystery Boys look and see Kubo walking with Wirt, Greg, and Eggs*
Raz: Hey Kubo.
Kubo: You guys look pretty gay.
Neil: Thanks.
Kubo: Not as gay as us, though!
Raz: Oh, please Kubo, we're ten times gayer than you!
Kubo: Oh yeah?! We're super duper triple-dog gay!
Raz: Oh yeah?! We're all ultra super stamp it stamp it no erasies mega gay!
Kubo: Dude! W-what are you doing?
Eggs: I didn't feel comfortable in that stuff, dude. I'm just being me.
Wybie: HA! Told you you guys were straight!

Kubo: You wish you were gay, Wybie! In you dreams!!

Ford: Oh, stop it!! You kids don't even know what you're talking about!! Kubo, you're not half-bi!!
Kubo: I'm like, a quarter-bi. My grandpa was bi, so that makes me quarter-bi.
Ford: WHAT??
Will Smith: We'll give you a million dollars.
Wybie: Oh, hell yes! *Joins the Million Millionaire March* I shall persevere!
Millionaire protesters: We shall persevere! We shall persevere!
Lili: What's going on?
Raz: Well, Lili, apparently Neil is gay, finds me very attractive, and, confused about his sexual identity, puked up all over my floor.
Lili: Oh dear.
Raz: Yes.

Worker: Alright now, you say that you witnessed your friend being abused by his parents.
Coraline: Yes. They called him an emo.
Worker: What's wrong with that?
Coraline: Emos suck! They're vile, self-pitying, depressed assholes!
Worker: So, why do you think they called her that?
Coraline: Because Norman’s Goth, and some ignorant people don't know the difference!
Worker: What is the difference?
Wybie: Oh my God! They're totally different!
Worker: Okay, different how?
Wybie: They're, uhm, you know, one is good and- and emos are horrible! *flips hair* They're, you know... They're posers!
Neil: Emos suck my Goth balls.
Coraline: Alright alright, think of it this way: a goth believes that deep down the world is totally fucked up. But an emo thinks that deep down, they are totally fucked up.
Worker: That's not much of a difference.
Wybie: That's a huge fucking difference!
Coraline: Okay okay, look, emos are more prone to suicide.
Wybie: This fuckin' asshole, man.
Coraline: But goths are more prone to be depressed that so many people commit suicide.
Wybie: Goth's darkness is nihilistic whereas Emo's is cynical.
Coraline: Wait, I thought we were cynical. ...Whatever, it doesn't matter.
Wybie: No, see, you're nihilistic.
Coraline: Oh yeah, you're right
Wybie: Awww, Hot Topic?! When did this open?!
Mabel: Two weeks ago. It used to be a Banana Republic.
Coraline: Of course. Freaking Hot Topic. That explains everything.
Wybie: How did we not figure that out? Of course a new Hot Topic must have come to town. Duh!
Norman: Well, I think we all know what has to be done.
Coraline: Yup
Neil: Guys! Tom Cruise won’t come out of the closet!
Norman: He's not just a normal guinea pig. He belongs to me and my ex-boyfriend. That's right Super Norman is gay
Wybie: This is fun. Let's walk for miles through a spooky jungle. It just keeps getting better and better.
Lili: You know what, we're getting pretty sick of your attitude, Wybie!
Neil: Yeah!
Lili: Nobody likes hanging out with people who complain all the time!

Never Let Me Down Again (1987) -> Music Video
Harringrove
- Steve was abandoned by his so-called "friends" Tommy and Carol at a house party after overdosing on cocaine. On his way to the bathroom, Billy happens to find Steve lying down alone in a bedroom. hi!! could i get a batfam matchup? platonic if possible, i'm a minor :0
i'm 5'3, slightly chubby. I have a busty pear body shape, and fine sepia skin (#8e624b). I have a 4B curly afro. I look around 15.
I use it/she/they pronouns. I identify as sapphic, heavily leaning to women. I don't mind feminine descriptors (Ms., lady, girlfriend, queen, etc.) I enjoy drawing and reading. I adore weirdcore, oddcore, traumacore and all things broken. I'm in a abusive family, and flinch very easily. I dress in a moll goth, grunge type of fashion. I enjoy large sweaters and hoodies as well as very wide jeans. I mostly thrift.
I'm a Pisces sun, Libra moon, Scorpio Rising. INFP leaning ENFP. I'm usually quite bubbly at the begging, but tend to become quieter and deeper as I find out more about a person. I heavily enjoy deep conversations. I enjoy indie rock and alternative - my favorite artists are Mitski and Penelope Scott. I have Maladaptive Daydreaming Disorder, most likely DPDR (not sure though) and ADHD. I struggle with Intrusive Thoughts and compulsive lying. I'm very suicidal, but not in a violent way. I used to be. Now i just want to float away.
I enjoy writing poetry and Victorian-style letters. One of my favorite authors are Osamu Dazai and Neil Gaiman. I'm a little insecure about my personality and stomach. I have daddy issues and crippling mommy issues.
I'm looking for someone to listen and understands me. I want them to be nice and gentle. I need them to relate to my trauma and be a bit broken themselves. I want someone who can drive us in the middle of the night to buy ourselves coffee without a word. i want them to sit and watch a movie in silence. i just need them to be here, knowing they understand. i dont need them to say much. i want to sleep on the sofa while theyre in the kitchen, knowing im safe.
CASSIE CAIN
you two are gonna be besties i can see it. cassie doesn't speak much but she'd communicate with you in ways that aren't speaking. little written notes around the house, flowers to encourage you when you feel down
cassie is an absolute beast when it comes to working out, but she'd also understand that all bodies are worth loving! the way you look doesn't affect the way that you deserve to be loved
also she has definitely read gaiman and dazai. she'd probably annotate a lot of dazai books for you. a lot of notes about villon's wife about how she could let her husband treat her like this
she's a quiet person and enjoys peace and would enjoy your bubbly attitude at first glance, but would adore even your quieter personality
poetry and victorian style letters? hell yes!
cassie is an absolute unit but she can control herself. in no way would she ever even do anything that you're uncomfortable with and wouldn't try to push your boundaries. she wouldn't even make sharp movements
there'd be a lot of quietness between the both of you. i'm thinking you two, a new york skyline up in a skyhigh apartment in the middle of the night, sitting on the couch and doing your own thing but you're sitting next together and it's just the two of you in. a quiet heaven
as she is quiet, she'd also be a big listener. your number one fan and would always try to hype you up in the way that she can

I know this is the same "becoming a parent" question but from the other side: but do you think people who get kids and or get married in the end compromise their philosophy/art - either because of the extra responsibilities, mellowing out or because on needs to compromise to appeal to the "normal family man" role, to "not scare the hoes" as the kids say.
If true it may answer why Logo shifted a bit in his views - his wife isn't a "normie" or "libtard" or anything but probably isnt comfortable with Nazi imagerary or atleast consious of the social reality, that even praising Stalin can be accepted in polite society but not others.
I don't even say it because I care for Hitler, but because there are some tweets that could imply the shift isnt just because of a natural evolution of views.
But alas, that was just a tangent, what matters is the intial question - so thoughts?
No, I don't believe that—or at least not about artistic vision. To take only one example, Joyce wrote Ulysses and Finnegans Wake while raising children (maybe not raising them well, but still), and artistic visions don't get less compromising than that. Many great writers, including ones who got better and better as they went, had families and children, from Dickens and Hawthorne to Morrison and Ishiguro.
Even on politics, Logo's present open political stance—pro-Russia, pro-China, anti-Ukraine, anti-NATO—is more offensive to establishment liberals than Nazism is, to judge from what went on in Canada last week and its ongoing apologia in mainstream media. If he's mellowed out politically, it's not obvious to me.
What's hurt more artists than family ever has is becoming popular or celebrated by the establishment too early in one's career. It seems mean to name names, but to give one example, I believe I've already suggested that Neil Gaiman may have both fallen victim to this dynamic. He wrote his best and darkest work with babies and toddlers happily underfoot; he only became permanently twee when he went out on tour to face the swooning sea of goth girls, as I saw with my own eyes at a mall in suburban Pittsburgh in October 2004.
