A/N: @cbetham requested a second chapter of this little story.
***
Outside The Darkness Of The Night, Part 2
“Daniel, can you zip me up?” Talia called, her voice coming through loud and clear over the surveillance equipment. There was the faint sound of feet on carpet, followed by Deeks’ familiar drawl,
“You know, this is supposed to be a dinner party, not a formal gala.”
“I know, but I always like to make a unforgettable first impression. And, I figure it won’t hurt if I turn a few eyes. I am the eye candy after all,” Talia continued. She made an appreciative noise. “Although, you do clean up extremely well, Deeks. Very sexy.”
“Jen…”
“Sorry, Daniel.”
Kensi rolled her eyes, turning the volume down a notch as Talia and Deeks continued to banter while they finished getting ready. She wondered if this was how they sounded to other people. If it was, she understood why Sam got so annoyed sometimes.
The past few days had been a lesson in patience for Kensi as she forced herself to ignore Talia’s special brand of goading. They’d pulled the operation together pretty quickly, with a lot of help from Eric and Nell. Going in under the names Jenny and Daniel Kern, Talia and Deeks quickly inserted themselves into Carson Desforges’ world. Within a few days, they’d garnered an invitation to a small dinner party at Desforges’ home.
To reinforce the illusion that they were wealthy and influential, Talia and Deeks were staying in a luxury hotel. While Kensi spent most of her day camped out in the surveillance truck, they got to eat five star meals every night. Normally, she wouldn’t care that much, but the whole situation was tugging at her last nerve.
Despite her annoyance, Kensi had to admit that both Deeks and Talia were good. They played off of each other well, reading cues with ease, and falling into their roles as well as if they’d been working together for years.
Which might go a long way to explain her general irritation: She was supposed to be in there with Deeks. He was her partner, not Talia’s. Talia hadn’t earned it. It all seemed distinctly unfair.
It’s, just part of the job. Kensi had told herself that more than once in the last week, but it was absolutely useless in quelling her jealously. Deeks was hers.
“Alright, how do I look?” Talia asked, pausing for Deeks’ response.
“You look…good,” Deeks replied, clearing his throat. “Beautiful.”
“Aw, you’re too sweet. Even after three years of marriage, you still think I’m pretty.” There was a smacking sound that Kensi instantly recognized as kissing. She leaned forward in her chair, waiting for Deeks to immediately push her away. Instead, he inhaled deeply, a little raggedly.
Even if she could only hear them, her mind more than filled in the imagery. She pictured Talia with both arms wrapped around Deeks’ neck—no, she was the type to grab him by the face—his hands framing her bare back. His lips firm, yet gentle as he cradled Talia in his arms.
Anger spiked through Kensi; at Talia for taking advantage of the situation, and Deeks for not doing anything to stop her.
After far too long, Deeks made a sound that Kensi interpreted as regret and when he spoke again, it was farther away.
“This isn’t a game, we can’t lose focus Jen,” he said quietly.
“Oh, I know. Just getting into character,” Talia replied lightly. “Come on, darling, we have people to charm.”
As they left the room, Kensi pushed her jealously aside. Oh, they were still there, festering in the back of her mind, but she wouldn’t allow her personal feelings compromise the mission. More importantly, she wouldn’t let Talia know how much she hated her right now.
***
A/N: And I’ve once again set myself up for a third part.
Just as a reminder, this takes place early season 6, before Kensi and Deeks were dating and when they were still firmly denying their feelings. Pair that with an married couple gig that Kensi is not a part of, and there’s bound to be trouble.

Fic Writing Review 2023 🌈
tagged by @itwoodbeprefect - i have also been thinking about this so thank you for taking the initiative!
tagging @faorism @gallantrejoinder if you'd care to do this in any form (including as writing/art review)!
Words and Fics (on ao3) 📚
words posted: 52,220, apparently. Which is actually... basically last year's but minus 10k because I didn't do H50 Big Bang this year, because med school. most things in my life now can be stated as 'because med school'. (actually I just realised I didn't do it last year either, but that was because I was already finishing a 10k H50 fic. so my point stands)
fics posted: either 6 or 29, depending on whether one counts the advent calendar as one fic or 24. plus 3 posted only on Tumblr.
first fic: love don't treat you like that (babe, I'm letting you know) (H50). on the NINTH of january, apparently. i've already lost my first-fic-of-the-year contest to last year, unless i unexpectedly finish something today.
last fic: Advent Calendar 2023 / ...Zaph Kilkane, the pre-eminent climate scientist of the 22nd century...
-
Ships and Fandoms ⚓
would you believe I literally did not repeat a fandom this year, outside of the advent calendar. and this year's AC had the most fandoms since 2019.
Hawaii Five-0 (McDanno)
NCIS: LA (Sallen)
Starsky & Hutch (S/H)
House MD (Hilson)
MASH (Punnihawk)
and then AC-only ones:
Star Trek (Spirk)
The Man From UNCLE (Napollya)
911 (Buddie)
Due South (i don't know ship names. are there ship names? Fraser/RayK)
Good Omens (Azcrow)
Leverage (thiefsome)
Almost Paradise (Ernesto/Alex. alesto. i'm coining it)
-
Top 5 Fics by Kudos 🏆
I mean, I have 6 posted fics that can be kudosed separately.
love don't treat you like that (babe, I'm letting you know) (H50)
When You're Loving Me (That's When I'm Loving You) (NCIS: LA)
Advent Calendar 2023 (see above. nine fandoms)
my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime / could never do you justice in reason or rhyme (House MD)
Finding A Cure In You (S&H)
-
Top 5 Favorite Fics 💖
okay, I'm going to count distinct chapters of the advent calendar for this. in no particular order and subject to mood change:
When You're Loving Me (That's When I'm Loving You) (NCIS: LA) - I cited this as a contender for my favourite fic I've written a couple months ago, so obviously it has to go in the year's. what can i say, fake dating is an immaculate trope, and this also all came onto the page very easily which is always vaguely miraculous.
there you go pulling me right back in (H50) - sometimes vague prompts i've had down for ages write up as something that's. fine, but a bit clunky, and I just have to move on bc it's the advent calendar and a new fic each day. sometimes I start writing them and they spring into life with joyous delight. or in this case, uninhibited grumpiness and love.
singing yesterday's songs wishing i could be with you tonight (MASH) - the one that didn't make it into the top 5 kudosed, I assume partially due to being locked and partially due to being a serious tone, not terribly shippy, and Peg POV. But I've had some version or other of it for a long time, it's one of those stories I'm genuinely proud of, and I was glad to finally post it.
Totally Normal (Due South) - it's fun. it was fun. I was slightly nervous about it, because the only prior Due South thing I'd written was Dief POV and this was Fraser and RayK POV and the first time writing either of those, but it turns out watching + liveblogging four and two seasons, respectively, of a character in four months is. enough to cement their voices in my head. it was unexpectedly easy and also. fun.
Festive Spice (MUNCLE) - i just think it epitomises the advent calendar. in the words of coolbreezemage, 'yesssss bake cakes and kiss your partner'.
HMs:
Finding A Cure In You (S&H) - this doesn't make it to the above list due to the fact that I haven't actually managed to reread it since I posted it. but just for the amount of time I spent with it, how different it is to my usual M.O. of writing, and the weird way I wrote it (entirely in the notes app, with almost zero rereading while writing), I have to somehow mention it.
A Thousand Words / To Be Spared (Good Omens) - I don't know if they're favourite but I do think they're good. and the format of to be spared was pleasingly experimental and i think it worked.
-
Fandom Fic Events 🤝
also the Starsky & Hutch SHarecon zine! which the zine still holds copyright on, but will be posted in April.
-
Projects for 2024 👀
mmm gonna sort this differently and also ramble
Ones that will definitely be finished in 2024 and if they aren't you have free rein to come to my house and tie me to a chair come November: MUNCLE wip, The Unwitting Truth Affair/The Honesty Affair, I haven't actually decided which title yet;
Starsky & Hutch, the still-unnamed Huggy & Pete wip.
Ones I have both hope and some amount of faith will be finished in 2024 and if they aren't you have free rein to come into my inbox and harass me about them: Hawaii Five-0 wip, Much Ado About Something (*salutes squares*);
other Hawaii Five-0 wip, state of disrepair. yes, I'm manifesting state of disrepair 2024. probably november/december 2024, but i'm manifesting it anyway;
Leverage wip, all that I want is a kind heart to haunt
Ones I would like to be finished in 2024, and if my brain decides it likes them might be, but all you have free rein for is to politely ask me about them once per business month: Hawaii Five-0 cath/steve/danny pwp, Wait A Minute Let Me Take You There;
horny S&H wip, Previews Of Your Body Driving Me Insane;
S&H Vanessa coda, so cordial / so rotten (don't ask me);
Good Omens wip, love won't you be as you've always been
Ones I don't expect to finish in 2024 but would like to get some words down in: angsty S&H wip, Relentless As The Rain;
ridiculous undercover H50 wip, Four Seasons of Love;
other ridiculous H50 wip, The Irritating, Annoying, Infuriating, (Effective) Seduction Techniques of One Steven J. McGarrett;
SPN ..wip? depending on the time limit on 'progress'?, Smells Like Turpentine.
vague thoughts: i'd like to write a full-length (for whatever value of that. the AC ones actually were full-length, especially the second one, but what I really mean is AC-independent) due south fic. they're very weird and i enjoyed writing them, and I'd also like to write something with RayV in it. maybe if I successfully inspired @itwoodbeprefect to write new ds, when she does that it will inspire me to write something, and we can set up a ping-pong game. no, wait, that's mixing fandoms.
I expect more MUNCLE fic. this one's already 3.5k and rocketing along, and i'm only two-thirds of the way through season 1. what form that will take i don't know at this stage but we'll see.
....i was discussing the vague concept of house/h50 crossover fic with squares literally yesterday and on the one hand I haven't written a crossover since 2014 and also don't want that to be my legacy, but on the other hand i think there is at least a 50% chance it's going to stick in the back of my brain and keep niggling.

Fandom Problem #4473:
Is it really fair to say that NCIS LA was always the unwanted step child of the NCIS franchise that CBS couldn't wait to get rid of? If you look at the show's longevity and popularity over the years, it was actually the most successful spin off.
14 Seasons, a great cast that everyone loved, whole websites dedicated to it, plenty of Facebook groups, 3 Paleyfest panels (even a couple of Comic Con appearances!), Thriving on Sunday nights for 6 Seasons, a night that is usually plagued with sports game delays on CBS, a very successful syndication deal, etc. At the peak of it's popularity (Seasons 3-9), this was THE show that most were excited about seeing and talking about! But at the end, declining ratings plus a huge budget that couldn't be maintained anymore was really what ended it.
If any of the NCIS's really looked like the unwanted child, it was NCIS New Orleans. Only 7 Seasons, never really much of a ratings hit, and once it's syndication deal with TNT was a dud, it got moved to Sundays at 10 where it was cancelled a year later due to it's filming location being too costly. Does anyone even really talk about that show anymore?
NCIS LA was popular enough to last so long, it'll still be talked about long after this year. If CBS could've saved it, it probably would've.
So, think carefully before you think CBS always wanted it gone because it was different from OG NCIS. (and also, hoping that any future NCIS show gets cancelled because you can't bear to think of the franchise continuing without LA is just inmature and petty. And also, Many New Orleans fans wanted NCIS Hawaii to be cancelled after it's 1st Season, and that show is going on Season 3 right now.)

The “million-dollar question” in NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 is simple: What is Sam Hanna doing on the island? LL COOL J has reprised his NCIS: LA role as a special guest star, and while he came to Hawai’i to help clear Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) for duty in the premiere, he’s obviously not just sticking around to help out as needed. But good luck getting any answers out of him! However, Jesse (Noah Mills) does get more than anyone else has yet in the latest episode.
But that only comes after Jesse makes it very clear he wants Sam gone. He’s not impressed when Sam talks about him and Callen (Chris O’Donnell) being trapped in a submarine, full of explosives (NCIS: LA Season 6 premiere “Deep Trouble, Part 2”). Then, “so Sam Hanna’s just around now, huh,” he remarks to Jane as they walk to a crime scene. He claims it’s not a problem (though she can tell it is), but he is wondering why he’s here. So is everyone else.
After asking Ernie (Jason Antoon) for his take on Jesse, Sam later tells the agent they need to clear the air. He knows the team relies on and trusts Jesse, but that the other man doesn’t trust him. “It’s not that I don’t trust you. I don’t know you. And I don’t know your intentions,” Jesse says. “Nothing but honorable,” Sam assures him. “Yeah, I appreciate that. Still doesn’t tell me why you’re here,” Jesse points out, and for once, Sam doesn’t pretend that he’s really just there to teach a seminar.
“Well, I’m not going to tell you why I’m here because I can’t,” he reveals. “But I promise you, I’m not here to look over anyone’s shoulder, not Tennant’s, not yours, and I’ll always have your six. I hope that works.” It does for Jesse.
Thanks to Ernie digging into Sam, we do get a bit more about his current time in Hawai’i—but it just leads to more questions. Ernie didn’t break any laws (just decorum), he assures Jane after sneaking into her kitchen while everyone’s gathered in the living room. “Sam Hanna was indeed TDYed to Pearl to teach his seminar, but not from OSP. All the paperwork, scheduling and pay are coming from something called Elite,” he says. It’s unclear what that is, but, he continues, “any further details are hidden behind triple encrypted firewalls that I’d be committing espionage if I broke.” Jane’s determined to find out what’s going on.
Is that connected to something related to an open case from NCIS: Los Angeles? There have been a lot over the years, and Sam did say he was talking to Kensi (Daniela Ruah) and Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) about a past case in the previous episode; maybe he was only lying about it being a past case. Could it be related to the mission to rescue Hetty, which was how LA ended its series finale? We have yet to hear if Sam, Callen, and the team Nell (Renee Felice Smith) assembled were successful. Is it connected to anyone from Jane’s team, and that’s why he’s working alongside them?

I can't believe there's only 1 episode left of my comfort show 😭
I started watching NCIS LA in with season 6 in 2014, the same year I started college. I watched Densi become canon in real time, the first ship of mine to do so. I watched them in the jealousy/pining era then as they were dating, engaged, married, and now parents... through Mexico and Syria and the mole and Ferris/Sullivan and the IA investigation and fertility struggles and Kessler and the creepy cult and the tunnel and Jack reappearing and Deeks becoming part of NCIS
In that same time I graduated college, moved twice, worked 4 different jobs, and have gone back to college.
This is really the end of an era and I'm more than a little emotional now at the end being so close

Reaching 1,000 episodes for the franchise was insane, and, by the way, I’m pointing out that almost 500 of those are just us,” says NCIS star Sean Murray ahead of that milestone. “I just have to throw that out there because I’m proud of that.”
That episode airs on the mothership on April 15, and Murray has been around for most of the ones to air on NCIS, having recurred in Season 1 and becoming a series regular in Season 2. So he has been there for a lot, including some necessary changes on set.
“It’s unreal. We had a lot of people asking what it was like, and I kept kind of shaking my head because it’s really unfathomable,” he tells TV Insider. “Shows are not supposed to go 21 years. It’s a miracle to get picked up. It’s a miracle to go past one year. It’s a bloody miracle. Sorry, I’m Australian, so I say bloody a lot. It’s a real miracle if you go five years. It’s an insane thing. And for a television show to go 21 years… We have had to rebuild our permanent sets because the partitions and stuff have fallen apart because they’ve been there for so long. And I’m not even joking with you. Chairs that were brand new when we started the series, these beautiful $1000 conference room chairs are falling apart like crazy because we’re in year 21, so we’re having to replace a lot of that stuff.”
Murray’s hesitant to share too much about the 1,000th episode itself (we already know Hawai’i‘s Vanessa Lachey and LA‘s Daniela Ruah will appear) but promises that both longtime and newer fans will enjoy it.
“My favorite thing of what we’ve done in the 1,000th episode is we have got little Easter eggs and things hidden all through the episode—and not even just hidden. We call back to a lot of things, but it’s a little hard to describe,” he admits. “It’s a great show for the people that are just tuning in for the first time or new fans. For the people that have been with us for a long time, it’s really something special because you’re going to see, like I said, Easter eggs of things. You’re going to see things that tip-off to old episodes, famous episodes that we did. Little moments. We have characters come back that we haven’t seen in a very long time.”
For example, like it was very much part of the first episode of the series, “Yankee White,” he continues, “Air Force One is very involved in that as are characters from that episode and from our past there. It’s going to be a cool one.” One such character from that episode is Fornell, played by Joe Spano, who we also know is back for the 1,000th episode, thanks to photos Murray shared on Instagram.
While there are those aforementioned characters from other NCIS shows appearing in the 1,000th episode, don’t expect a crossover outside of that, necessarily. (Ruah directed an episode, which Murray loved. “I know that she’d been doing a lot on LA, so it seems like a natural thing for that to happen,” he shares.)
With the shortened season, “we really want to make the most of our 10 episodes as possible, and so we’ve really turned a lot of it inward, and it’s even more character-focused,” explains Murray. “We really want to just buckle down and make it about our team there.”
But he’s not ruling it out for the future. “We like to do crossovers and do that stuff, and it’s a lot of fun. We know when the show continues, if the show continues, that that stuff will happen and everyone plays within the franchise,” he says.
Tumblr media
CBS
And those crossovers are fun! After all, with the three-show event in January 2023, Murray reunited with LA‘s Chris O’Donnell (G. Callen) and LL COOL J (Sam) after he worked with them in the two-part backdoor pilot, “Legend,” during NCIS Season 6 in 2009.
“I will never forget doing that interrogation scene with Chris and Todd. That was so much fun because I’m the one in there usually grilling everyone, so I was on the other side of the table, and that was a lot of fun, having those guys there,” Murray shares. “I remember when they did the spinoff when we were in year 6. It’s wild. So to see the success that they had and the way that that show went was really cool. As much as it’s inside the franchise and we share names, the shows were very different, too. I know they didn’t want a carbon copy of NCIS, even though they share the name. It was a different kind of show, but being able to have those characters over with us was really fun.”

Not a week after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, CBS is the first broadcast network out of the gate with a game plan for the delayed regular TV season.
CBS’ schedule, which kicks off in February 2024 — right after getting loads of promotion during its airing of the Super Bowl — is nearly identical to the Fall TV slate announced back in May, when the WGA strike was getting underway. The only differences are that Kathy Bates’ new Matlock series has been pushed to the 2024-25 TV season (as has the Wayanses’ Poppa’s House sitcom), and CSI: Vegas is now closing out Sunday nights.
Justin Hartley’s Tracker, as previously announced, will tackle the coveted post-Super Bowl slot, Carrie Preston’s Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth will still call Thursday home, and as the photo above means to remind you, NCIS: LA alum LL Cool J is locked in to continue his NCIS: Hawai’i arc.
Most CBS series are planning to have 10-13 episodes each, running into May.
SUNDAY, FEB. 11 (following Super Bowl LVIII) ~10 pm TRACKER (series premiere)
MONDAY, FEB. 12 8 pm The Neighborhood Season 6 8:30 pm Bob Hearts Abishola Season 5 9 pm NCIS Season 21 10 pm NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3
TUESDAY, FEB. 13 8 pm FBI Season 6 9 pm FBI: International Season 3 10 pm FBI: Most Wanted Season 5
THURSDAY, FEB. 15 9 pm Young Sheldon Season 7 8:30 pm Ghosts Season 3 9 pm So Help Me Todd Season 2 10 pm TRACKER (series premiere repeat)
FRIDAY, FEB. 16 8 pm S.W.A.T. Season 7 (final) 9 pm Fire Country Season 2 10 pm Blue Bloods Season 14

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thanks to @bonheur-cafe and @lemonlyman-dotcom for the tags!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
99! Must do something special for 100! Any suggestions?
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
358,733
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Actively: 911 Lone Star, Heartstopper
Previously: NCIS LA, SEAL Team, Teen Wolf, others...
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly
The House in the Pines Where the Road Ends
Hold Onto Me
The Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival
Take Me Out to the Ball Game
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! It means SO MUCH to me when people comment, I feel like the least I can do is say thank you! Also, it always makes me happy when someone responds to my comments, so I try and give that magical feeling to others!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I Could Have Loved You- This is a SEAL Team fic that explored the six weeks in season 2 where Sonny and Lisa were together in before she would have left for her officer billet. In the end I had her leave even though both of them wanted to stay together. Honestly still prefer it to the shit show the show turned them into.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
It All Fades Away- I finally married Kensi and Deeks off on the beach because the damn show was taking too long. It was really beautiful! Also this is so old that it's only posted on ff.net lol.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not often, especially now that I'm on AO3. People used to be real mean over on ff.net.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
No. I like to let people have their privacy. I will write straight up to the line of smut though.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I have written exactly one 911 LS/The Rookie crossover for @bluenet13 and I only posted it on Tumblr. It involved the Reyes sisters is was generally hilarious.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. Please don't steal my things lol.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Someone asked me many years ago if they could translate one of my fics into German and I said yes. I saw it once, no idea where it's posted now.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Tarlos, Ron/Hermione, Nick and Charlie
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have a Ron/Hermione fic that spans the time from the end of DH to 19 Years Later and it's not done and it makes me sad because I really loved a lot of it.
16. What are your writing strengths?
DIALOGUE. I only have one, but I do think I'm pretty damn good at it. Okay maybe also character voice.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Scene description. I hate it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Yes? Sure? But like, know what you're doing. Don't guess.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
First ever? Star Wars. First posted? Power Rangers. I've come a long way lolol.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Ever?!?! Oh, I don't know! Anything involving Adriana and Francesca maybe? Or maybe Requesting Immediate Backup. I loved writing Andrea and T.K. teaming up on Carlos to make him feel better when he's sick.
Tagging (no pressure) @ladytessa74, @carlos-in-glasses, and anyone else who wants to play!

I read your UC post and i totally agree with the points you made. This is just my two cents.
I dont see the show having her continue down the long-term op route. Whether or not it fits with her character, I don't think they'll do it because it wouldn't fit the show's format. They would either have to have multiple episodes dedicated to that case for every op, have her disappear for episodes at a time, or have the op happen in one episode that takes places over a long time period.
If they showed most of the case in the episodes, it would take up a ton of screen time and because of that, they would probably have her go under as little as possible. That would completely defeat the purpose of following through with the UC storyline.
If they had the UC op continue going in the background of normal episode storylines, that would mean we would go episodes without seeing her or barely seeing her. That also would defeat the purpose of giving her this storyline if they use it to effectively write her out for part of a season.
Trying to cram a whole long-term op into one or two episodes would end horribly. The timeline is already so screwed up that it would only make it worse, lol. The kind of fast forward through the op montage worked in 3x14 and 5x21 only because those were a week or two long. Trying to do that with a 3-6 month op would be bad because it wouldn't give the other characters proper attention and skip big chunks of their storylines.
In my opinion, the formatting of the show wouldn't be able to work out longer ops while trying to give all the characters attention. I do think she should do more shorter ops as episode a or b plots, but I can't see it working any differently than that. This is just my perspective
Oh absolutely! I was mostly focusing on a character standpoint since that was the original point : I mean, logistics aside, the decision to pursue UC (or not) also has to make sense storywise.
But since we're now on that topic, yes, if Lucy were to ever do a long-term UC op, it would bring a lot of challenges. Like you said, cramming a 6-month op in 1 or 2 episodes wouldn't work, since it would affect all the other characters' own storylines in a negative way. And better not talk about that infamous timeline lol. Let's be honest, that's probably one of the reason why she has only done short-terms assignment so far. Although it is funny how they keep bringing up the issue… Or that they even chose that particular route in the first place.
But, you know, it's not necessarily impossible either. They could start with a time jump, like they did after Jackson's death : we end one episode with Lucy going undercover and the next, a couple of months have passed. Then, have the UC op be the main B plot for, say, half a season. A fil rouge of some sort. Lucy could go undercover for a case that both Nyla and Angela are working on, with Tim as her handler : that way, she is still linked to the team even if she doesn't see them all in person and her arc is still relevant to the main plot… A bit like they did with Elijah Stone this season, only less repetitive and more consistent. That would force the writers to be tighter in the scripts, with fewer plots per episode, which was a big complain this season. Or as I mentioned in the other response, they could take a page from NCIS LA's notebook : when the main actress got pregnant, they created a whole storyline for her character (a B plot) that lasted half a season. She was away on a long assignment, in a different continent, while still helping her team from time to time. Until the two main plots converged. In our case, it would be a bit easier since Lucy wouldn't need to be that isolated.
That's just one example but I'm sure they could find a way to make it work… the real question is : do they want to? My guess is, they are going to stick to short terms UC for Lucy, like you said. That way, they can have the best of both worlds. Unless, they decide to have her go a different route… That's always an option!

What's your thoughts on the lawsuit arc? And why do you dislike it?
Oof.
Okay, so definitely not a secret that I dislike it.
Part of it is that it realllllly stretches my ability to suspend my disbelief. I'm generally pretty easygoing with that sort of thing in visual media (books are another story) - can deal with Chim being fine weeks after being impaled in the head with a rebar, can deal with a tsunami in LA, forgave the many implausibility's in Indiana Jones and dealt with Tony getting the plague and being fine two weeks later on NCIS to give some non-911 examples.
But the lawsuit? Just - no union involvement? No LAFD HR involvement? And a lawsuit that was resolved in a matter of weeks for that matter?
(And also it just seemed wildly OOC to have Buck's first thought be a lawsuit at all, even with the lawyer planting the idea, not to mention how Maddie reacted to it - you're telling me she had zero conflict about choosing to side with her new boyfriend instead of her brother who she's always protected?)
Yeah, so firstly just really stretching the suspension of disbelief.
But even when I try and hold onto that suspension...
My biggest bug bear about it is that the central conflict is never really resolved. And there is so much potential there! It's canonically verified that Bobby is treating Buck differently and it's because he feels overprotective towards him... which is valid! Buck has been through a lot, and Bobby has developed a different relationship with him than he has the others.
But we barely get to explore that motivation and most importantly we never got to see Bobby and Buck have a discussion about that motivation. We also never see them have a conversation about the desperation that would have led Buck to take such a drastic measure.
Bobby just decides that Buck is ready and he's ready after a full day of insisting he's not ready and... that's it. They both kinda just dismiss the feelings that resulted in it all happening in the first place.
And finally... I also really struggle with that level of awkward drama between characters in general. Like the grocery store scene made me feel genuinely uncomfortable and I fast forward through it anytime I rewatch that ep (which is rarely, because lawsuit...)
So we basically get all this drama and this really far-fetched storyline... and then it doesn't feel like it actually meant anything in the end.
(The one thing I will give it though - I think the contrast between how much Eddie and Buck struggled to support each other in Season 3 and how they learned about what each other needed so they could support each other so well in S5/6 is stunning storytelling and does somewhat redeem the debacle for me. Somewhat.)
