Empress Amidala from chapter 14 of @spell-cleaver’s The Protégé! This was my first time drawing evil Padmé, and designing her black armour-like dress from the chapter was such a treat! I kept the embroidery and embellishments toned down, with the lineart providing the main highlights, which I think it worked out well XDD
Also, her eyes aren’t red in the story, but I imagine this is how she might appear to some (or a lot of) people, especially given what she’s doing in this particular scene ^^;;
And by the way, this painting and some of my other Star Wars pieces are up on my Inprnt shop! :DDD

"truly, deeply," or, depth and Naboo's core
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In English, and a number of other languages, we understand depth as a good thing. Depth is understood as complexity and profundity: to dive deep is to look for great detail, to feel deeply is to have strength of feeling, deep colours are highly saturated, depth of thought is something having much significance.
Naboo the planet differs from most rocky planets in that it apparently has a hollow core populated with sea monsters. Our understanding of the sea, the ocean, the core and depth are fundamentally different to that of the Naboo, because for them the primary association with the deep is that of being eaten by giant sea monsters (bodré).
So, onto the concept of depth. The primary association in Nabooro with depth is the idea of danger. Depth is complex, but it is not profound: it's more like the metaphor of a black well. What lies in the deep is darkness and hunger and probably also certain depth. "To dive" at all is to do something dangerous; "to dive deep" is to risk death. To do anything "deeply" is to do it with an element of danger, which is also understood as despite the possible consequence, or accepting of the danger involved.
Of course, that isn't to say Nabooro doesn't have a word to convey the sense of profundity or sense of from-the-heart that is conveyed in the English "deeply." They do, and it would be translated into English as "deep" or "profound" because of linguistic redundancy, though what it actually means is "rooted."
So the question is: when Padmé says she truly, deeply loves Anakin, which one is it that she means? I don't think somebody who has grown up speaking and learning in Nabooro would translate carelessly into Basic, because there would be a discomfort with the concept of depth even when she speaks in Basic — it's easy to learn a new vocabulary, and far more difficult to unlearn the metaphors that are implied below the language.
I think, considering their conversations about how they can't allow themselves to fall in love ("it would ruin our lives,") it's the literal understanding of deeply in Nabooro. But I also think that this is meant to be understood as having come from her heart.
Following what I assume is the intended meaning, she would say, in Nabooro: "Né dé folcan. Oshinéfe. Saméfe." [I love you. Truly. Profoundly.]
Done with a more literal sense of "deeply" in Nabooro, and in context, she might be saying: "Né dé folcan. Oshinéfe. Tânshife." [I love you. Truly. Dangerously.]
But my personal preference gets rid of the 'truly' entirely, at least in the semiotic sense of being correct or honest, instead replacing it with the sense of profundity — she loves him from her roots, i.e. from the heart of her, from her truth — and maintaining the sense of danger and acceptance of risk in the 'deeply', giving us: "Né dé folcan. Saméfe. Tânshife."
That is: I love you, from my roots, and from my hollow core. I love you, from the part of me that holds me in place, and the part of me that prepares me to fall. That is, put in Basic: I truly, deeply, love you.

Young Queen Ameé
Ameé was was born on the Mid Rim Territories planet Naboo around 54 BBY. At 40-36 BBY, she served as the Queen of Naboo, which meant that she was 14 years old, when she started her term.
Princess Fanry of the Inner Rim planet Pijal, who was in similar age as the Naboo Queen, considered inviting Ameé and other young galactic leaders to her world for a summit. However, her lord regent Rael Averross rejected the idea.
Unfortunately, that is all what is known about the Queen.
On the painting she was presented in a costume of one of past Queens and has scars of remembrance on her face. Naboo royal crest behind her and on her dress represents her high status.

Another shower thought. Did Padme Amidala have a regnal name? Or was she just known as The Queen of Naboo (with no name)? Cuz if she didn't have one and she was known as Queen Padme Amidala of Naboo how the F did no one suspect a handmaiden with the same name as her around the same age? Also how did no one recognize her from her campaign for the throne? You can't tell me she had the same level wardrobe. Today's politicians look very different on the campaign trail vs sitting in office.

Padmé ‘Amidala‘ Naberrie
Padmé is a traditional name on Naboo that means “diligence, hard work, tirelessness”, and translates literally to “who does not sleep.” The meaning is not only one of industriousness but also implying a lack of ignorance, especially willful ignorance. Padmé, then, also means one who will not be corrupt or give into greed, making things unseen and letting injustices pass with a blind eye.
Naberrie translates literally to “the boiling path,” which originates from certain hot water springs in the part of Naboo that the Naberries once occupied, but has been reinterpreted by more recent Naberries as meaning the path that is not easy to walk, and a sense of responsibility and the dignity associated with being the ones to walk that path.
Amidala is a regnal name with a little bit of precedent - while there haven’t been a lot of Amidalas over the years, there have been some, and it was a name Padmé chose with intention.
Padmé was elected to the Naboo throne at a time of internal contention for the planet. King Ars Veruna ruled Naboo for thirteen years, elected over and over again after four year terms with votes that nobody could dispute despite their sometimes unrealistic-seeming majority. He presided over the planet with a sort of cult of personality. His reign would later become known as one of widespread corruption. When it ended abruptly with his death, though, things took a turn, with a lot of internal factions colliding with each other for the space he and his associates had occupied. Queen Sanandrassa was instated as an interim monarch, but the general trend on the planet was one of change and shifting away from the things that had characterised Veruna’s reign.
Padmé took on the regnal name Amidala on being elected, meaning literally “memory of home,” as an attempt and a reminder of what made Naboo Naboo, and its people the Néboo. It’s a symbolic name, understood not as a literal memory, but more as a reminder, a refresher—and the bearer of the name understood as somebody who would revert Naboo back to a place without corruption and injustice.
Which is all to say, her name means: there’s still good in [us].

The First Queen of Naboo (Legends)
A female of the Human species was anointed the first Queen of Naboo more than three millennia before the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY. She was one of the Human colonists who had fled a civil war on the Core World of Grizmallt and established a new civilization on the planet Naboo, a green haven located on the borders of the Outer Rim Territories. On the painting, we can see settlers on the left as they land in a Naboo-Like ships. Also, behind the Queen we can see a tapestry with a solar system indicating that she was an explorer.
While her people was engaged in bloody conflict with the native Gungans, that woman was chosen to lead the colonists, who took the name of their new homeworld and became known as "the Naboo." Although she accepted both the title and the function of Queen, that woman refused to be the founder of a hereditary succession line. (It is symbolized by a broken crest with symbol of a tree on the right.) Instead, the newly elected Queen decreed that her successor would be selected based on their merits only. This started a tradition of meritocratic democracy on Naboo, which would still be used millennia later. However, the constitution of Naboo had a provision that allowed the monarchy to become hereditary for a worthy dynasty, and this happened at least once in history.
Unfortunately, not many information about the Queen survived to our times. We do not know her name or how she looked like. The artist decided to choose for her a simpler costume in shape and tone, similar which was wore by Naboo Senators, to mark that Naboo just starts to build their rich civilisation. The Lady also has a travelling bag indicating that she was a colonist.
On Queen's head we can see a Naboo crest headdress and a Naboo royal crest on the red curtain, underlining the importance of the lady. She indeed was the first ruler of Naboo.

I’m in a year end reflective mood so I thought I would talk about getting back into fanfiction writing after like ten years. Quarantine caused me to reconnect with my favorite media again which got me back into first reading then writing fic. Here’s what I love about the three stories I have up so far.
Inevitable Rise: I just wanted to write a first person story from Barriss Offee’s perspective post The Wrong Jedi where she’s basically The Joker at the start and has found some measure of peace by the end. I read the Queens trilogy over a summer holiday and loved this one background character from Queen’s Hope, Saché’s non-binary personal assistant and I just needed to write about zher, and I guess ship zher with a wanted terrorist. I’m proud to be the lone Tepoh author on the site. I also love my original character Captain Chiran. He’s basically Han Solo mixed with C-3PO. What if Han was a prissy elderly gay Pantoran man. I’ve since expanded the Chiran family which is a neat little aspect of writing. I had simple goals for this fic. I wanted a Bespin sunrise. I wanted Barriss to preform a Compass Dance, and I wanted lots of Naboo Handmaidens.
Heart of Kyber: my first romance and I like the way it turned out. I love Ahsoka musing about the real meaning of nostalgia. I love barrissoka stories where Ahsoka is the more hesitant one and Barriss is just feral. The chapter titles are self indulgent but if you know you know. I just love the super sad and dramatic Riyo Chuchi cameo. I was going to make Barriss joining the Cloud Riders it’s own fic, might still do that someday. I like the idea of Barriss as a heretic rather than a fallen Jedi. Two people having the irresistible urge to chastely sleep with each other before actually committing to a physical relationship is just my entire bag, baby.
Jedi: Dropout is just a big excuse to do some Pantoran and Mirialan world building. I’m very proud of my version of the Mirialan religious pantheon and loved writing a vision quest with one of their goddesses. I really love Across the Frozen Sea by ArtyWrites so I expanded on their version of Pantora where towns and cities are named things like Perseverance, Defiance, or Solitude. I stole their religious pantheon as well. It’s just so good. Since Star Wars has the Holonet I think they’re would absolutely be Jedi fans writing spicy Jedi fanfics but in-universe it would be RPF. I just really wanted to explore what it would be like for a Service Corps Jedi after Order 66, it’s the most engaging time period for me and what would it be like to fail to become a Padawan but then be on the run from the Empire? And this one is just all OCs. And Tepoh. Zhe’s there too.

Realistically, I think the best explanation for Palpatine calling Cody by name is that Palpatine really really wants Obi-wan dead, he is SICK of dealing with him. Telling Cody to execute order 66 is something of a special occasion (and then Obi-wan survives anyway-) BUT realism aside I absolutely love the idea of some bug in the space mind control chips requiring him to make an individualized recording for every. Single. Commander. He is seething with rage the whole time.
lmao I do love that the entire fandom has agreed that palps was SO FUCKING HYPE to kill obi-wan specifically; which: fair. Extremely funny. we are all correct in this fandom tonight, etc.
(related: love the idea that palps has been trying to kill obi-wan since approximately half a second after the whole 'trade warfare gone wild ft galaxy's most fucked orphan->parent speed run', and has just been failing the whole time. Like he was his fucking boss for three years in the war, putting that man in the most osha non-compliant circumstances, and presumably just doing some sneaky murder attempts for the decade prior to, and obi-wan was just like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ just another taungsday! the whole ass time. Anastasia ass life experience, only Anastasia is also a [space] wizard.)
Skeevy sheevy also having to like, record every fucking message in every combination by hand is also so fucking funny to me. You are a sith powdered by rage and spite but is it worth it, really?
