Hello! LaCE stands for “Laws and Customs of the Eldar”. It is a section from Morgoth’s Ring, and probably one of the most well-known but also arguably the most controversial section in the entire The History of Middle-earth series. 🥲

LaCE outlines things like the Elven life cycle, but also touches on topics like Elven marriage customs and sexuality. Much of the points in LaCE are described in this entry in Tolkien Gateway (but also, I believe there is usually a PDF of LaCE specifically floating around online, if you are interested!).

I think many fans who decide to go beyond The Silmarillion would eventually encounter LaCE and personally, I think we each have to fight our own battle when it comes to it 😂 LaCE can be a rigid guide, and you can use it or ignore it depending on who you ask. I personally like to stretch LaCE (and every piece of “canon” we get) as much as I can without ignoring it altogether. It's like an extra fun challenge in our little sandbox. For example, because Glorfindel and Erestor would typically meet later in life in my writing (contradicting LaCE's claim that Elves marry early, around their first century), this just gets acknowledged in the narrative as "unusual for Elves". This isn't really a bad thing, and I find it even adds an interesting flavor to the story as well.

But also! Every once in a while, I also do just tag a fic as “LaCE non-compliant” and call it a day! The legendarium is filled with contradictions and potentially unreliable "historians"—there are many ways to get away with things! 🤭

Omygosh! I only just scanned your one-shot (events in my life are currently conspiring to keep me from both writing and being in a calm and receptive condition to read anyone's work) and I just have to say: FURTHER PROOF WE MUST SHARE THE SAME BRAIN! Though I've long neglected A Time and Place for Misbehavior, I had always planned to right the wrong of Benedict not getting the Oscar for his Alan Turing! Anni is going to need some time away over something that happens during the Christmas holidays, but by Oscar time they are either reunited, or on their way to be. And they are already low-key engaged, although during their estrangement, she wears the ring on a chain around her neck. I'm just gobsmacked how in sync our writer brains are.

If my mom sees a significant amount of blood she gets lightheaded, and has fainted on some occasions. Once it happened when we were kids, I wasn't there to witness it but I heard the story from my dad. Basically my brothers, around 7 or 8 at the time, were playing outside while my mom was making their lunch, and she accidentally cut her finger. It wasn't anything serious, but it drew a fair bit of blood and she passed out. My dad saw this and rushed over, but he didn't really know what to do so he just sort of started slapping her to wake her up (not recommended, but he had no idea and panicked)

At that exact moment my brothers both came in from playing, and all they saw was our mom unconscious on the floor and our dad slapping her. So, like, without even saying a word to each other they both just INSTANTLY start whaling on him, like, full blown attack mode to defend our mom. Which obviously didn't help the situation, but she did wake up and everything was fine.

Now our dad says that he's actually really glad they attacked him over what they thought was going on, because it means he raised good boys. And I still think that's true, they're very good boys.
