Ah yes, Grian’s lovely iconic waffle!

Well flower ranchers isn’t a trio that I look for, and Martyn and Tango is like my special interest of a duo— so either I spread PROPAGANDA for a underrated duo or a trio that’s very popular (not as Desertduo but still fairly popular)

I’ll go with Martyn and Tango for the sake of spreading my fave duo that I put together in mind.

Martyn and Tango. Tango and Martyn. Firewood. Angerduo.

The two blondes that are against each other in almost every season of the life series. In total, Martyn has killed Tango at least 3 or 4 times, of my knowledge, without fail. Tango has at least killed Martyn back once or twice.

In the beginning of 3rd Life, Tango had already shared his feeling on Martyn and that he’s suspicious of the blonde after the silly trolling guy had played fake creeper sounds and was basically bringing death to others (phantoms wise). That’s where the start of the turmoil begin between the two characters!

Throughly they have always challenged each other and Martyn happens to just make things harder for Tango, especially like the time Martyn had make Tango reconsider the rules of the game (with others as well pushing the rules) that he made I think in Last Life or 3rd Life.

If you also notice, they both get frustrated easily, not in the same circumstances but they both do throw fits— especially when something doesn’t go their way. Take an example when Martyn had lost against Monoply mountain, his traps not going to plan (although anyone would be frustrated by that) and more that I can’t remember through out the series. While Tango is very much known for his bitter rage when he gets robbed of something that obviously marks precious to him (if that’s the right word). They both just angry fits but show it differently as Tango is more sporadic or more wild to word better, while Martyn is more cold and calculated or something like that.

And I will say by recent events of Secret Life, Tango and Skizz have mentioned Martyn multiple times as a potential member of the Heart Foundation as “The Muscle” and for his great observations.

Sorry if this is all over the place because my brain around these two are just over the walls and I haven’t taken my meds- but anyways-

Martyn and Tango have been literal rivals from the very beginning and they have grown into more of friendly type of rivalry with more consideration of each other’s helpful traits. These two would literally be unstoppable in way of calculating traps.

Martyn is great for his strategies and charisma, while Tango is great with his redstone and building skills! Not to mention how bloodthirsty they could get, especially Martyn. He would enable Tango’s anger so much but by letting him manage the anger and put it into his contraptions.

These two would just be rivalry unhinged together and this is why I love these two.

SOOOO TRUE AND REAL one of my fave Spy characterizations is "seething in his smoking room over rivalry/romantic frustrations/his weenie Boston son/etc." I think he's steeping with rage constantly but doesn't know how to process it. He SHOULD fuck his whole team but thinks he's above all that and also can't really process that people Like That would awaken That Sort Of Thing in him. It's not even an internalized homophobia thing Spy tf2 has been having bisexual sex for like forty years he's just a snob. He needs a makeover montage where he learns to let his hair down

mera everytime I read your fics I can't decide if my fave is riddle, azul, or jade 👁👄👁 how does one go about choosing?

It depends on what you would like most: mr. mommy issues, mr. breeding kink, or mr. suspicious dealer. Or as my friends say: one vs eight vs very large LOL. If it helps you choose a favorite, the fics I have planned for the three are as follows:

Riddle - just one fic planned for now. it involves the victorian era, a very unhinged overblot!riddle, a very dead non-overblot!riddle, mysterious death, and secret relationship.

Azul - a fic involving contractual fwb, slow-burn yandere, smut, fun banter, and too much flirting. like an abyssal amount. azul is down horrendous. it's actually really soft and tame because i wrote most of it with chase atlantic on shuffle. azul's an absolute dork throughout the entirety of the fic. also mr. azul 'just the tip' ashengrotto (make of that what you will). aside from that, you can expect another captive azul fic, which involves human!jade leech and rook hunt as researchers. rook plays cupid for azul. azul does not understand the meaning behind every love song rook plays at full volume, but wow does that spark something in him. meanwhile jade bonds with the other captive (reader) in azul's enclosure. >:D there's also a camboy!azul fic, which is considerably darker than all of my other azul fics and has azul playing femme fatale for the sake of a very unhealthy obsession.

Jade - dru chapter five!! he's a horrible man. </3 but omg can he cook a killer meal (pun very much intended). there's also a fic in which jade and floyd engage in some sibling rivalry over floyd's darling. jade leech finds he enjoys reflections a little too much, especially when his own is pressed against yours and displayed so perfectly in the mirror.

with the apollo justice ports around the corner I finally made a concerted effort to finish AAI. there was a period where i thought i'd play both investigations games AND tgaa before now. lol. lmao even

fandom wasn't kidding that last case can long

miscellaneous spoilers and overall thoughts on AAI1. also it's very long

let's get some good stuff up top to start:

it was pretty funny

the pixel sprites were soooo cute, and most of the character art was nice in general

i liked seeing more of edgeworth and franziska together. this was 80% of the reason i played the game to begin with. stupid little details like the fact that she does, actually, still call him "miles" occasionally were nice to have, and i liked a lot of their bratty sibling interactions

callisto yew was the best lmao i loved her

kay's cute. i gotta disagree with the common fanon that she's literally edgeworth's daughter, on account of it's been two days and someone else has raised her to near adulthood, but being a teenager who shows up sometimes to bother him is a very funny thing for her to be, anyway

the yatagarsu actually being a toxic polycule was funny as shit lmao i love it. and kay at the end saying she wants to find 3 fellow teenage beauties to do it with her fhkldhglkhlfg yes girl end up on reddit queer housing discourse i believe in u babe

i didn't like lang all that much to begin with but once we got to the shih-na reveal i was all in, lmfaoooo. i joked "i hope he eats a poison necklace for her" and five minutes later he was taking a bullet. amazing. in all seriousness their relationship felt like much of what i enjoyed about dahlia and phoenix minus the stuff i felt was stupid. let's hear it for toxic workplace romances. edgey comes out of 3-5 like "well that was a lot" and then meets some new spiky weirdo to have homoerotic rivalry with only to discover that guy is also insane about some evil woman

cammy and ms teneiro were also great. lot of funny women in some of these cases. i like that.

this game could have attempted to sell me on some het romance for edgeworth -- it wouldn't have worked, but i wouldn't have exactly been surprised if it had tried, yknow -- but anyway instead it had miscellaneous women flirt with him while he was consistently baffled and/or oblivious and/or revolted. don't worry mr edgeworth i saw your magenta suit

i think broadly that covers the stuff I liked. which leads me to ... stuff I did not:

this game was... rough, imo. after i finished the trilogy this summer i was excited to play this, in particular because one of my few but key complaints with aa3-5 was that franziska and edgeworth just kind of disappeared and i was hoping this would give more exploration and closure to their characters.

that... did not happen. i felt like i was waiting for it to hit a point and get good for pretty much the entire game; it'd be like "well at least franziska is here soon" "well i want to meet kay" "well there's the baby franziska case" "well it's the finale surely it'll be fun!" and mostly none of that really materialized. largely i found it disappointing and anticlimactic.

i don't think i learned anything new about the existing characters -- edgeworth just kind of seemed to be reiterating lessons we already learned in the trilogy, and i felt they negated a lot of franziska's trilogy development and/or flanderized her a lot. the new characters are ok -- i LOVED yew/shih-na lmfao, and I like Kay, and I eventually came to like Lang once I saw him be unhinged about shih-na. but overall i felt the character work was weaker than I was expecting, and without the investment I have from the trilogy I doubt I'd have finished the game. the bratworth + baby franziska case was my fave of the game, because it was fun to see them together in that period of their lives, but even then I don't think how edgeworth was written makes any real sense with aa1 -- i think trilogy bratworth would take the easy conviction against gumshoe and be done with it. that was like. pretty core to the first three games.

I didn't find anything particularly emotional. I WAS interested in Callisto and her dead sister as compared to Kay and her dead father but, never mind, that was a lie. They tried to convince me KG8 was personal to everyone, but it didn't really feel like it for anyone but Kay -- who I like but met two cases ago, and whose connection to even Edgeworth is tenuous. Like they make it pretty clear Franziska is haunted by that case but ... why? Because she regards it as a semi failure I guess...? Like sure, I guess, but ... that's kind of remote. Compare to the trilogy finale stakes of defendant Edgeworth, Maya kidnapped, Phoenix falling off a bridge + Maya missing... the big threat here was that some guy we just recently met might go on to murder other people we've never met in foreign countries. Objectively yes that's bad, but it's not exactly emotionally gripping, imo.

I feel like the nature of the games and its place in the broader AA universe meant the stakes were off. edgeworth and his allies get accused of murder every five minutes in this game, but none of it ever feels real, because by "accused" they mean the police ask a few questions. in AA terms, this is nothing. there's no detention center or arrest or the threat of a 3 day trial and inexplicable death penalty. i've been saying for ages that i would love to see defendant franziska, everyone else got a turn!!, etc -- and technically this last case gave it to me except, well, she was one of about a dozen people accused over the span of the world's longest case, there's no real threat there, and frankly where's the fun in franziska being accused of murder if not for her to grudgingly accept phoenix as her representation. AAI's determination that everything happen pre-trial means that mostly none of it felt very serious; no one even gets arrested. maybe in a vacuum the threat of arrest would feel like enough, but in a series where you have Maya as Murder Charges Georg it just felt like nothing was really on the line -- what's the worst that happens, they get arrested and they hire phoenix? lol. don't threaten me with a good time!

this post is a million words long so I'll stop there. in conclusion, the worst ace attorney game I have played so far. fortunately(?) for AAI and unfortunately for me, i have not yet played dual destinies or spirit of justice, so stay tuned to see if it gets dethroned, lmfao.

i will, probably, eventually give AAI2 a try, if only to better understand everyone's fanfiction, but my hopes are pretty low.

Anon, please show us those so called hardcore Charles fans. The only thing I've seen are unhinged wales stans that think monarchy only exists to cater their lazy faves. Thanks to them, I'm starting to think maybe Harry has some truth regarding with William in his book.

Trust me, there are very hardcore Charles’ fans (I won’t tag them because I don’t know if they would like it) 🤷🏻‍♀️ but there are. I mean, there are still people who are hard defenders of Andrew after all the mess he has created (trust me there are 😭), why there won’t be Charles and/or Camilla hardcore fans?. And don’t let me start with the Twitter crew 🤣

It also depends of how diverse your tumblr is. I’ve read very deranged people defending each member of the family, attacking others, defending the indefensible, etc… but there are very nice people, very fair and unbiased.

And Harold is very economical with the true (I’ve been on this mess since the beginning and ¡wow! The number of half truths, lies and now even saying they never called the RF ‘racist’, he really has lost his mind), but yep, perhaps there have been things he has said that are true from all his family (brother, father, Camilla, etc). After all behind walls, they are like every normal family (every generation have complained, attack, bitterness, rivalry, jealousy, books and add the stupid press. But i suppose they have had nice memories too, not everything needs to be black and white). So, some things the Ginger has said perhaps are true (some other are lies, some jokes from his dad which now he is taking them as offense 🙄, half truths, etc)

I can only follow a certain number of people. Otherwise, I would never get through my feed!

It's probably a good thing though. There's one W&K diehard fan that I've seen that hates Charles to the point of writing the most crazy shit. I'd just be too tempted to argue with that craziness.

It's the year 2021 and you're obsessed with The Karate Kid. How are you feeling?

Deadasss weird as fuck, my dude. Like...out of all the things I could’ve predicted happening in our lord’s year 2021, it definitely was NOT getting hyperfixated on a hammy gay ship with a punk and a nerd from a goddamn karate soap opera. And yet...here we are??? I will never understand hyperfixations, my guy. But I’ve met a lot of really cool people in this fandom, so I can’t really complain.

Did you grow up with TKK or are you new to the series?

I have never seen a single Karate Kid movie in my entire life. When I was a kid, it looked kinda dumb so I never got into it XD But then I saw my roommate watching Cobra Kai on Youtube Red one day (he has every streaming service known to man) and I was hooked. And...here I am!

We gotta do the basics. Favorite character:

Okay but if we gotta pick, Johnny Lawrence is my Problematic Fave. Also I love my boy Daniel, he’s trying his best!!! And Amanda LaRusso, we stan a queen!!!

Among the kids, definitely Miguel, with Demetri as a close second. I also love Sam, Aisha, Moon, and Hawk (pre- and post-Bastardization Arc, anyways XD)!

Favorite ship:

Take a look at my username and take a WILD FUCKING GUESS lmao Yes it’s Eli/Demetri because DUH, every interaction they have is so fucking gay and Eli fucking saved him!!! And came back to him!!! And betrayed the world’s most terrifying dojo with a WAR CRIMINAL SENSEI all for Demetri!!! And how Demetri was willing to forgive him for everything at the drop of a hat because he always had faith there was still good in his best friend??? That’s TRUE LOVE motherfuckers. Please let them kiss in Season 4. I will sell you all of my limbs. Sam/Miguel is a close second because they’re cute as shit and it’s just so lovely to see two people so unapologetically smitten with each other. They are in LOVE, and I will RIOT if they break up again!!! Keep Sam and Miguel together 2k21!!!

Underrated character:

SAMANTHA LARUSSO!!! The amount of hate my girl gets for acting like a normal teenager and fucking up occasionally JUST like the rest of the cast makes me want to start punching things. She cares SO MUCH about her friends!!! And she loves the shit out of Miguel!!! She hasn’t always been the best friend but you know what??? Neither has Hawk, and we still forgave his ass!!! Also LET HER BE FEMININE but also kick utter ass, my god!!! Femininity should not be synonymous with being weak, y’all! ALSO DEMETRI, like yes, he likes to complain and occasionally run his mouth, but guess what else he likes to do??? Never give up on the love of his life his best friend Eli Moskowitz and refuse to lose faith in him no matter how much of a little shit he’s become, and I for one think that’s very badass of him. Also the way he takes care of Eli pre-Cobra Kai in his own snarky bastard way makes me absolutely Weak and needs more appreciation. Like the dude has charisma and COULD have probably made other friends and left Eli behind if he wanted, but did he??? No, he wants the weepy loser with the lip scar in the polo shirts and dorky sweaters and will protect him as much as his wimpy ass is able!!!

Underrated ship (don’t say therapy, lol):

Among the adults, Daniel/Amanda!!! Like maybe I just don’t watch that much tv, but it seems kinda rare to me to see a happily married hetero couple, and it’s just nice to see a married couple who genuinely love each other and where there’s not like...lingering resentment or some shit. I feel like this ship gets overshadowed by Lawrusso a lot (which like--okay, fair!!! Daniel and Johnny do have a ridiculous amount of chemistry, and the gay undertones are undeniable, so I get it), and it makes me kinda sad. I do love Lawrusso, but I don’t like when Amanda has to get her heart broke for it to happen, you feel? Among the kids, honestly YasMoon. Like I really love the idea of Yasmine trying to better herself because of Moon’s influence on her and because Moon like...inspires her to be a better person, I guess? With their pretty strong friendship, it just makes more sense to me for Yasmine to get a redemption arc through Moon than through Demetri. ALSO girls DO often pull the whole “mean girl” shtick to cover up being closeted lesbians, and Moon IS canonically bi, so it could work!!! I just think this one could be a really interesting Friends to Lovers take, and could make a really nice coming-out arc for Yas. And MoonPiper too, honestly!!! Like they only got 5 seconds of screentime so I understand WHY it’s underrated, but I still love what we DID get and loved that there was a canon gay ship (even if only for 1 scene lmao). I’m really excited to potentially see more of them in Season 4!!! Please, I’m begging!!!

Wax On, Wax Off or Sweep the Leg?

Sweep the Leg because it will always be deeply hilarious to me how Demetri took note of the first move Eli ever used on him and spent presumably weeks perfecting it OUT OF SPITE just to get him back with it at the soccer game MONTHS later. Just goes to show how OBSESSED Demetri is with Eli and their little karate rivalry which is just NOT straight, I’m sorry

Which of Daniel’s dumb little outfits is your favorite?

There’s something so funny about this pretentious little fuck walking around in fancy suits once he becomes a #SuccessfulBusinessman, and still occasionally trying to do karate in a full-ass suit (take THAT, Tom Cole’s boba!!!) I’m also a big fan of how he looks in his gi with his little headband. Still killing that look as a 40-50-something!!!

Character from the films you most want to return, who’s not Terry Silver:

Tbh I have still never seen a single Karate Kid movie (they took them off of Netflix, RIP), so...I don’t really care if they bring anyone else back??? I’m invested in the characters we already have in the show, I don’t need some rando from the movies to make a cameo to have a good time XD The only character I really wanted them to bring back was Ali, and they already did, so like...I’m good??? Miyagi-Do because Cobra Kai would eat me alive. *Briefly panics because I don’t actually watch that much TV and most of the stuff I do watch is fantasy/sci fi shit that absolutely would not work for a CK crossover*

Hmmmm okay but ACTUALLY

You know what would be fucking funny as hell would be an It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia crossover. Allow me to elaborate: ~The Gang goes to LA on vacation during the height of the Karate Dojo Wars. They literally can get barely anything done without all these goddamn karate-fighting teenagers getting in the way. ~They are all very annoyed by this. Even the most obscure of tourist attractions is eventually intercepted by karate fights. ~Mac tries to join Cobra Kai because he sees all this karate fighting on, and wants to unquestionably prove both his badassery and masculinity. Both Johnny and Kreese are like “Wtf are you doing here? Aren’t you like 30?” ~Mac gets a planet-sized crush on Johnny after all of 5 minutes and endlessly gushes to the gang about him. The gang mercilessly roast him about this and about how much of a pathetic loser with his life together in no way whatsoever Johnny sounds like. They proceed to have exactly 0 self awareness about this. ~The Waitress is in town visiting family or something, and Charlie is stalking her, as per usual. However, every time he’s about to go up and talk to her, a pack of battling Miyagi-Dos and Cobra Kais throwing punches and kicks everywhere blocks his path. One times, Mac is among one of these packs and Charlie is like “???? He didn’t get kicked out of that teen karate dojo yet???” ~Seeing how much the Kids These Days seem to like fighting, Charlie drops by a local high school to try and sell Fight Milk to the kids doing karate. Only Kyler and Brucks buy into it, and subsequently get the entire West Valley High wrestling team sick. Charlie is inevitably arrested, as Counselor Blatt thinks he’s selling the kids drugs. ~Dennis makes a plan to have sex with every hot chick he can in Los Angeles. He meets Ali on a dating app post-divorce, and inevitably tries to bang her. It doesn’t work. ~Frank crashes the rental car, and inevitably the gang ends up at one of Daniel’s dealerships. Dee quickly takes a liking to Daniel and is like “Watch, assholes--Imma homewreck this guy’s marriage.” She starts frequenting the dealerships to attempt to flirt with Daniel, until one day she walks in on him having sex with Johnny in a back room and she’s like “Is that the guy from Mac’s goddamn dojo?!?!” ~Dennis, of course, tries to sleep with Amanda. Amanda is not having it, and rebukes him in the most snarky, Amanda-esque way possible. Dennis is just like “Oh not AGAIN--the women in this goddamn diva city have too high of standards!” ~Later on, the gang is at the beach and Dennis spots the blonde lady he went out on an ill-fate date with, and decides to give it another shot--that is, until he sees her go up and kiss another woman and he’s like “IS THAT THE LADY FROM THE CAR DEALERSHIP??? STUPID-KARATE-KICK-COMMERCIAL’S WIFE?!? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.” ~Dee complains to Dennis about her lack of luck getting laid, and Dennis is just like “Oh come ON, is everyone in Los Angeles gay???” Smash cut to Hawk and Demetri having sex, Moon and Piper making out, Bert and Nate holding hands, Chris and Mitch doing oral, and Amanda, Ali, and Carmen having a threesome. ~Frank tries to scam Kreese into buying cheaply-made karate equipment for his dojo. The gang ends up having to leave LA because Kreese is quite literally plotting all of their murders.

Artie

I think Artie would fit in Ravenclaw. I don’t really have an essay answer as to why but.... the vibes are there. He is not really a Hufflepuff, and not crazy ambitious/competitive like Gryffindors or Slytherins so he’s fit into Ravenclaw the best.

Blaine

What can I say? Hufflepuffies hufflepuff of them all. Such a Hufflepuff. One might sort him into Gryffindor, but I don’t think this is a Neville situation. He is just vibing, he just wants to sing his acapella pop with his pals. He isn’t crazy set on a goal like Rachel (a gryffindor) or Kurt (a slytherin) and isn’t really brave in chivalrous. I’m not saying he’s a coward, Cedric for example was brave akin a Gryffindor but still got sorted into Hufflepuff.Those traits are just not what defines Blaine. He is kind, he is friendly, hard-working, extremely loyal and therefore a Hufflepuff!

Brittany

Britt seems like a Ravenclaw, believe it or not. Most would put her in Hufflepuff but does she really seem hard-working, fair and family-loving? Those are not her values at all, she seems like a Luna Lovegood kind of Ravenclaw.

Karofsky

Yes Karofsky was a bully. Yes he was a horrible person. But deep down? I think he’s a Hufflepuff. Especially after his graduation and redemption line, I feel like we really see the true Karofsky and not scared closeted bully Karofsky. And that Karofsky is a HUFFLEPUFF.

Emma

Emma seems like a ravenclaw… She loves giving advice, making her pamphlets, she’s very smart and organized! I don’t really have any other reasons, but honestly I don’t think she fits in any other houses.

Finn

Hmm, this is a tough one because I hate Finn. Okay, not hate! He’s just... not one of my faves, and I don’t really like the way his character was written. I honestly just want to make him a squib and be over with it... You know what? This is my post. I can and will make him a squib if I want to!

Jesse St. James

I’m really not sure whether he is a Slytherin or a Gryffindor.... I think he leans more towards Slytherin but I get a tiny bit of Gryffindor vibes from him too.

Puck is a Hufflepuff and I do not take criticism, behind the jock persona and all the acting out he is a cinnamon roll. Period. Think of the time when he chose Glee over football. When he said that he’ll do anything to support Quinn and Beth. All the times when he cried during a klaine duet. When he saved Shelby from Quinn’s evil plan. He is actually kinda soft, but covers it all up with skipping school and bullying people and whatnot. Think of it as villain backstory, behind every villain is just a person who needed some compassion. Or a total nutcase but this is not that case.

Quinn

Very much a Slytherin. I- I don’t know who would put her anywhere else. Really. Let me just start listing things here.... spying for Sue in s1, giving Rachel an anti-makeover to get her away from Finn, aiming for ivy league schools, plan to get Beth back by framing Shelby..... Oh, and a big one! Remember that professor she slept with... in S6 I think? A Gryffindor could never. I feel like Gryffindors pride themselves on being very true to themselves and authentic, and Quinn basically fabricated a whole personality which honestly is rather impressive. Very Slytherin, 5/5!

Rachel

A Gryffindor! Yes, you read that right. Not a Slytherin, a Gryffindor. I elaborate on that in the Kurt post, but I feel like I should explain a bit more. Yes, Rachel is loud, selfish, obnoxious, annoying. And those are Gryffindor traits! You might think oh but she’s ambitious like a Slytherin... but! Gryffindors are ambitious too. That’s where the entire house rivalry stems from. Gryffindors and Slytherins both are extremely ambitious and the biggest difference isn’t in the goals, it’s how they choose to approach and achieve those goals. Gryffindors in a more uhh... unhinged way! The door is locked? Kick it down. And Slytherins will plot and plan their way around the problem instead of barreling at it, not as obvious as Gryffindors but just as determined. The door is locked? Pick the lock. Go through another way. Pickpocket the nearest teacher and get the key. Come back later.

What inspired you to write the fic this way?

Nettle’s written in dreamy present tense! it’s meant to jump around in Harley’s personal timeline and idk that just felt right. when i write more introspective things they just tend to work better in present tense imo, and my style lends itself well to vignettes. truly i just do whatever i’m feeling in the moment but i think my brain has a way of breaking it down like this before giving me that answer.

What scene did you first put down?

I always write chronologically! if i only write my fave scenes first then the rest of the fic feels like a slog to me and i quickly lose motivation. ALL my fics are written in the order they’re presented!

What’s your favorite line of narration?

it’s never one line because my prose is often fragmented, but here:

He fades in and out of consciousness, and in a brief period of waking, catches it—black silhouettes surrounding him, cutting jagged shapes against the starlit sky above. The hypothermic conditions must have gotten to him, because he swears that stars have unhinged themselves from the sky and traveled downward to hang around him, bright amber and glistening brilliantly. Crybaby blinks again. They’re not stars. They’re eyes.

He wills himself to focus on the shapes, unsure what it is he’s seeing. They’re on every side of him, arm to arm like demonic paper dolls, thick needles piercing galaxies from the heavens. The scene registers, and he’s immediately awake, paralyzed with fear.

The sandstorm has stopped. The only sound across the sandy plain is the errant howls of mightyena on mountaintops far away. Five cacturne stand around him, their eyes ravenous and devoid of mercy.

What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

“And who’s to say me threatening the life of a child over baked goods won’t earn me friends?” Harley smiles sweetly. “Can you think of a more wondrous origin story?”

“Yeah,” she tells him. “I can think of a couple hundred.”

What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

i didn’t let the main character have a name until p much the very last few scenes of the story! harley is arguably canonically queer and queers pick our names more often than not, but deadnames don’t really matter and so i needed something to call him. before he grows his confidence and self-actualizes, all he can see within himself is his capacity to be sensitive, so he’s defined by that until he picks his name. I’ve never done that before! in my trans ash fic i DID allow the audience his deadname because i wanted to play around with movie 4 time travel shenanigans xD but that fic, despite being written by a trans person, contains a lot of Cis Person Writing Trans Character tropes, so with harley i kinda wanted to do better.

Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?

It Could Be That Deep!

i generally don’t go into most of my fics with a Message(tm) but one thing i think is present in Nettle is that your identity is self-defined. no one can tell you who you are and if they do you aren’t bound to stay that forever.

the thing i want people to understand about narcissists is that we become narcissists because of abuse, because the world tells us we’re nothing and our brains change to defy that notion. and we’re so often told we’re abusive or selfish or horrible simply because we were more or less beaten into a corner and did what we could to survive. i wrote harley as a young narcissist who cried and cried and cried and shyed away from the world and couldn’t see himself as anything but still found bravery and attempted to chase his dreams. i wrote him as someone who flourished because one person saw his potential and cheered him on, and i wrote him as someone who bloomed into a narcissist and was loved and adored still not in spite of but because of it. a lot of my writing is just... i want this queer, neurodivergent character to be loved, and i want the queer neurodivergent folks reading it to know they’re capable of being loved too.

harley comes from dust and depression and weakness and shapes himself into exactly what he wants to be. thats what nettle’s all about.

What did you learn from writing this fic?

harley is the funnest motherfucker to write in the entire world.

What’s your favorite line of narration?

Harley can’t count the days since Purika that he’s dreamt of beating her into submission. Can’t fathom the hours that he’s lied awake in bed prying apart her first round appeal, her battle style, how she was able to dance around his dirty tricks and steal the ribbon out of his hands even with angry tears in her eyes and red staining her cheeks. Back then, he’d reveled in the way her pretty little face contorted, flustered and searing holes into him—she was so fun to play with. Now, it only reminded him of her resilience, and all he longed to do was break her.

i love writing him when he’s Evil. i love villains. it’s really exhausting to write harley when he’s not being a good person, but in like... a satisfying way, tbh.

What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

“The needles don’t fool me, Harley,” she near-whispers. “I know you’re a good person underneath them, okay? I hope… someday, I can be as strong as you.”

He finds his voice. “You should hope you never have to.”

What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

it pretty much entirely incorporates canon events! almost every scene is just a scene from canon, and so all the dialogue save for a few is 4kids/tpci’s writing instead of mine :P i loooove doing canon retellings and going into what the characters are thinking during those scenes.

Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?

this fic has been recontextualized a lot for me since writing it because the person i have historically used as my greatest inspiration for harley besides myself (both his good and his bad) is no longer an enemy and is, in fact, my fucking future roommate now. i did not go into this fic with a message to be learned, i was just kinda like ‘man may and harley got a lot of cool shit happening in their rivalry. let’s look at how that could work out.’

now when i read it i’m just like... there is nothing in this world that can’t be mended if both people truly want to mend it with their whole hearts. i wasn’t writing this fic to be prophetic but i never am and i always do. if you miss someone maybe they miss you too. time changes us all so much, even the worst falling outs can blossom into something beautiful and strange and twice as strong.

to quote my aforementioned muse, “[I think] forgiveness could happen.”

What did you learn from writing this fic?

its fun to write people who suck and are selfish and cruel even when they don’t have a tragic motive. like its fun to just write assholes sometimes :P

Kenny Omega is a Siren

And I am but a flailing sailor throwing myself onto the rocks.

I've been watching wrestling since I was about 10 years old, give or take. I'm now 28, almost 29. I fell in and out of watching it along the way, but have been pretty consistent for the past 6 years.

WWF/WWE has been the primary player in my story, understandably. I grew up in love with (and still am in love with Jeff Hardy). I gravitated, as a kid, toward colorful characters and teams like Team Xtreme, and ones that were high flying dare devils. The acrobatic, lightning fast nature of that style captivates kids easily, it can’t be denied. I still love the style, and appreciate any performer that works that way. It’s high energy and grabs the audience.

Despite this preferred style, however, I must admit that the actual wrestling wasn’t what initially drew me in, and it isn’t often what keeps me held nowadays. Obviously, if I didn’t enjoy the physical aspect, I wouldn’t be watching, and I can recognize when someone is particularly talented at what they do in the ring. But it was always the characters and the stories that pulled me in when I was younger, and which continue to do this day. That being said, I’ve gravitated away from WWE in a lot of ways. I appreciate so much of what the guys and girls do, and how hard they work, and how talented they are, and yet I’ve been terribly bored by it all lately. The stories just aren’t there for me. But that’s an essay for another day when I have more patience.

Fast forward to roughly a year and half to two years ago. Enter Bullet Club/The Elite.

I have far too much solitary time at my job so my mind tends to wander into daydreaming about what it would be like to meet some of these guys, or else what it would be like to sit down and actually spew my wrestling fandom story to some made up interviewer. Doing this really helped me dissect what it is I love about Kenny as a performer. Because I love him as a person too, but that much goes without saying. I’ll get this out of the way right now so that I can be genuine and serious for the rest of this. Most of what I explain in this essay lends A TON to the fact that the man is just sexy as fuck. Kill me dead.

God damn angel.

The first thing that drew me to Kenny was, in fact, his in ring ability. As I said before, I don’t often over analyze what the wrestlers do in the ring aside from finishers or signature moves and if I like the way they look. For instance, I think the RKO is one of the loveliest moves to watch. Call me fake all you want, it’s fine by me. I’ve been watching long enough to know what most moves are called and how an in-ring performance aids the story: I’m not uneducated, this is simply about taste. I’m a plot person, a charisma and character person.

But Kenny is one of the special ones.

Something about the way he moves strikes a chord. It took me a while to pinpoint what it might be, but I finally had an epiphany not too long ago. He really does move like a video game character. I grew up loving video games and while I don’t play as much anymore, I really appreciate how his passion for them bleeds into his wrestling style.

And it isn’t just his moves, but his mannerisms. I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t like that about him; that he’s too over the top and goofy sometimes, and I just want to tell them, “That’s the point, though.” He excels at being over the top. Because depending on what he’s doing, who he’s fighting, what the current arc is, his mannerisms always make sense to me. The deliveries of his finger gun, the “You can’t escape”, some of his crazy eyes. I love it all.

I am 90% sure that the first match I ever saw of his was the one with Jericho at the Tokyo Dome. So obviously I haven’t been around long as far as his career goes. But if there was ever a match to fall in love at first sight with him, that was the one.

His moves, guys. HIS MOVES. The man is a machine. But like a 95% organic, android machine. Terminator, obviously. Wink wink.

Think about it. He is so crisp, concise, and articulate in how he moves. He is both explosive and technical. He mixes the powerful moves in with the high flying, manic style I’ve loved since I was ten in such a seamless way. The one-winged angel is a great move for its established devastation. Rarely have I seen anyone kick out of it, which is why I’m glad he never connected with it in the Mox match at Full Gear. Mox was able to come out on top in his specialty match, and yet Kenny wasn’t lessened by having his finisher made ineffective.

But I’ve found that even though I adore Kenny’s finisher and his flying over the ropes and around the ring, it’s some of the other things he does that fascinate me. For one, I adore the movement for his “You can’t escape” segment. How, may I ask, does a person move like that? And I’m not even talking about the moonsault part. The man is like a gymnast with that stuck landing GOOD LORD.

Secondly, the V-Trigger. This is a signature, yes, but fucking beautiful to watch. It’s speed and power and looks as life-ending as it does poetic. Just ask Joey Janela.

Have I mentioned yet that I love Kenny’s run? It’s so distinctive. Especially when it first starts. The high knee. The acceleration. The man is gorgeous in motion. Just agree with me and we’ll keep trucking along here.

The one move, though, that really illustrates what I’m getting at here is one that should--at least to my not professional in any way eye--be fairly elementary. I’m talking about the the snapdragon.

Please correct me if I’m wrong in saying this, but to my eye it seems like a move not developed for its power/match ending ability, but simply as a way to bring the opponent down and waylay them for a minute. It’s a suplex of sorts, yes? I imagine it isn’t meant to result in a pin.

But Kenny’s snapdragon is probably my favorite move he does. The Speed. The SPEED. THE SPEED. Whip-like and akin to the RKO in its tendency to strike out of nowhere. I watched him do it 3 times in a row live in person and I could only stare with fucking heart eyes.

He takes this move that should just be a trip up maneuver and makes it look like it could truly kill a man.

Again, maybe the move was always supposed to spell obliteration for the opponent. I don’t see it really outside of when Kenny does it. But I think his style largely affects my view of it.

The motion of this man in his performance really drives home to me what so many people love about the art in wrestling. I sit up and pay attention to the physicality in a way I don’t in other matches. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll be up out of my seat for a lot of guys and gals, screaming and electric with the crowd when shit gets crazy. But when Kenny is in the ring, I find myself really absorbing what he does because of how well he does it. His talent has really connected with me, but I get it doesn’t with some people. Well, maybe I don’t get it, per-say, but to each his own.

I find that a lot of the qualities I find so enrapturing about his wrestling transition into what I love about his promos. His work on BTE is often very different from the NJPW/ROH/AEW stuff. His BTE stuff is usually humorous and endearing in weird, chaotic ways. I find him funny and cute and sometimes a bit unhinged. I’ve always liked a little crazy in my faves, let’s be real.

His in-ring promos hit a different nerve.

As with his wrestling, Kenny’s speech is crisp, concise, and articulate. It’s been a while since I’ve watched one, but I call to mind his introduction of Marty into Bullet Club. The wording he uses in such promos really elevate his character, especially when he’s got The Cleaner vibe going on. But for me, its all in his tone, the inflections. He’s quiet and you listen. The promos are smooth, easy to track, and evoke emotion.

It’s been a long time since a wrestler has really snatched my attention in the way Kenny Omega does. I find myself listening to my faves’ promos in both WWE and AEW more often than “listening” to their matches, and this often leads to me missing parts of the story. Do some promos fall flat? Sure. Depends on the character much of the time, and if I dig the current rivalry.

It hasn’t yet mattered to me who Kenny is facing. I pay strict attention. And in turn I pay attention to what the other person is doing, too. I love the wildness of Kenny’s matches--a wildness that isn’t only made obvious by his high flying moves, but by the subtler ones, too, as well as his mannerisms and expressions. The man can lay you out with a one-winged angel, 1,2,3. But first he’s going to tear you apart with a plethora of poetry in motion.
