Part 1 => Part 2 => Part 3 => Part 4 => Part 5
Ao3 , Poster Boy ( and the trials are endless )
~~~~~~
Will is lost
There’s a heavy wet clogging sort of feeling in his chest that makes it difficult to breathe as he runs, but he can’t stop. Pushing on with wheezy, stumbling, frightened steps.
 He can’t stop.
Will is being chased
A monster follows.
The hulking beast is ever present in the sludge and rot of the world around him. The anticipation as clogging as the foul rankness of the air. It keeps finding him.
Will is hunted
It’s harder to struggle onwards after he fails to reach through the walls of the hellscape parading as his home. He can hear his mom calling his name, he can hear the snarling of the creature. He runs
A girl appears to ensure him the promise of escape
 It’s no use
He can feel his end as the vines slither through and wrap tight and bruising around him.
There’s a vine creeping up his face, and another wrapping itself around his arm, distantly Will recalls the echo of an incident that never occurred. He can’t breathe
Will is twelve when the world ends
‘.....Solar radiation has been tied to dramatic rises in mutant birth rates-’
‘...Mutants manifest powers either at an early stage of their life or during puberty-’
‘...Occasionally mutants appear to manifest their ‘abilities’ when under duress-’
Will is twelve when-
There is a blinding flash of light, and the snap crackle of lightning. Will is tired, so, so tired.
The vines take him away, the vines-
 Will wakes up.
It’s bright, the hospital room. An overwhelming, eye searing sort of white and gray. He aches
His arms throb and there’s sludge and rot and the phantom feel of vines down his throat when he swallows. He remembers-
He remembers-
Will’s mother smiles at him.
 He smiles back.
Obsidian lore thread!
Sharing this thread of lore, episode connections, and Easter eggs from Adventure Time: Distant Lands: Obsidian, originally written for my Twitter.
Tumblr media
SPOILERS AHEAD, WATCH OBSIDIAN ON HBO MAX IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY
Keep reading for the full thread!
1) We've seen bombs scattered around the Land of Ooo before, but this is the first time we've seen the word "fission", confirming that they are nukes. Although we have seen the radiation roundel plenty of times so it's pretty obvious.
Tumblr media
2) The "magic lightning" that created the Glass Kingdom could itself have been one of the nukes. Alternatively, it could have been the catalyst comet, although Finn has no connection to this place so that's probably not the case.
Tumblr media
3) The subtitles for the first four minutes video suggested that Glassboy was saying "crap" here. However, the HBO Max subtitles confirm he is actually saying "crack".
Tumblr media
4) All of Marceline's classic furniture is present, but Bubblegum's influence is very visible; a doily on the couch, a flask underneath, new barstools from the Candy Kingdom, and the pink lamp in the bedroom, just to name a few examples.
Tumblr media
5) Lady Rainicorn slippers. That is all.
Tumblr media
6) Chocoberry on the cover of a magazine. Looks like she's been dipped in white chocolate for this shoot.
Tumblr media
7) This is the first time we've seen Choose Goose since he appeared as "Achoos Goose" in the Elements miniseries. Last time we saw his normal form was all the way back in season five's "Blade of Grass", nearly seven years ago. Is it weird that Choose Goose was the first thing in the episode to make me cry?
Tumblr media
8) It appears that Princess Bubblegum has not rebuilt the Gumball Guardians since they were destroyed in the battle against GOLB.
Tumblr media
9) There are lots of familiar candy people in and around the tavern, from a variety of seasons, including Kenneth, Dirt Beer Guy, Cherry Cream Soda, a Banana Guard 500, Lollipop Girl, and Smudge.
Tumblr media
10) Simon is of course singing "Remember You". He is also using the omnichord that was used in that episode. Interestingly, this suggests he might remember some of his experiences as the Ice King.
Tumblr media
11) This isn't the first time Dirt Beer Guy's tavern has hosted an open mic night. He also held one in "Son of Rap Bear", and even used the same banner, although it's looking a little tattered and worn out now.
Tumblr media
12) Simon doesn't look any older than he did in the finale. This might mean that Betty's wish made him immortal, or it simply might not have been long enough for him to visibly age.
Tumblr media
13) This is the oversized shirt given to Marceline by her father in the episode "Marcy & Hunson". It's looking a little faded these days.
Tumblr media
14) Bubblegum's outfit is of a similar style to the one in "The Vault", but it's not the same. The fact she's not wearing her amulet might suggest this flashback takes place after "The Vault", but nothing is known for certain.
Tumblr media
15) There are gravestones outside Marceline's house, but these actually aren’t new. They previously appeared in “Go With Me”. So don’t worry, these don’t belong to Jake or anything like that.
Tumblr media
16) Simon's coping mechanism would be funny if it wasn't so sad. It's going to be a long time before he fully recovers. On a lighter note, the magnets on the fridge say "M PB" which is pretty cute.
Tumblr media
17) This is our first time seeing the outside of Elise's van. We previously saw the interior in "Everything Stays". Also, we learned from the credits and subtitles that her name is Elise!
Tumblr media
18) Previously, it wasn't known whether or not Elise survived the Mushroom War. Turns out she did... but not for long. It's also now unclear whether the flashback from "Everything Stays" happened before or after the war.
Tumblr media
19) A nice little timeline detail: Marceline travelling with her mother for a while explains the awkward two year gap between the Mushroom War and the events of "Simon & Marcy".
Tumblr media
20) Here's a comparison of the parts of Marceline's song that got corrupted into the current version. The Glass People got really obsessed with the idea of the song being about coconuts for some reason.
Tumblr media
21) PB yelling "Scree!" to summon the Morrow is a callback all the way to the season two episode "Death in Bloom", which is when the Morrow made their debut.
Tumblr media
22) Disease is added to the long list of things that helped wipe out humanity. I wonder if this disease is related to the one that Hugo and his crew gave to the grays in the BMO special. I also wonder if Marceline is immune thanks to her demon half.
Tumblr media
23) The mutant puppy was able to say the word "wassup". Perhaps this is a halfway stage to the talking animals that now populate the Land of Ooo.
Tumblr media
24) Turns out Marceline discovered her demon powers before she defeated the Fool. This is the first appearance of these kinds of soulless husks since "It Came From the Nightosphere" in season two.
Tumblr media
25) This is the first new candy power we've seen Princess Bubblegum use since she learned how to create mints and soda in "Jelly Beans Have Power".
Tumblr media
26) Marceline not caring about the glass people is very in line with her personality in the early seasons, such as when she was happy to let her father suck souls as long as she got her bass back.
Tumblr media
27) No Easter egg here, just an extremely good image.
Tumblr media
28) Here's the screenshot leaked by Adam Muto last month. Like the gas station in "Bonnibel Bubblegum", the graffiti here tells an interesting story. Seems like the Land of Ooo had a bit of a Mad Max phase while the humans were still around.
Tumblr media
29) This is (as far as I know) only the second time an Adventure Time character has ever been shown bleeding. The first was the heart monster in "The Enchiridion", but that was a lot less realistic.
Tumblr media
30) The fact that humans survived long enough to construct a whole Fallout-style bunker confirms that the near-extinction of humanity wasn't a quick process. It makes you wonder whether any other groups made it, besides the Islanders.
Tumblr media
31) Apart from this being one of the darkest scenes in the entire show, I like the background detail of bank notes being used as toilet paper.
Tumblr media
32) Marceline grew up blaming herself for her mother leaving, and says she is like her dad. It sounds like Elise has told Marceline a bit about Hunson Abadeer, and is scared and angry at him.
Tumblr media
33) This actually isn't the first time Marceline's bass has been broken. She also snapped the handle during her fight with the Vampire King. However, it's never been completely shattered like this.
Tumblr media
34) This might be a reference to the Hall of Egress. That's the only other time we've heard Bubblegum use that word.
Tumblr media
35) Confirmation that Princess Bubblegum doesn't have bones. I guess that counts as lore?
Tumblr media
36) The gag of the Banana Guards slipping over each other was also done in "The Thin Yellow Line" and probably some other episodes I'm forgetting.
Tumblr media
37) Jake’s granddaughter Bronwyn is certainly an unexpected appearance. I wonder what affiliation she has with the main cast now?
Tumblr media
38) And of course... FINN! I would estimate he's aged about five to ten years since the finale, but it's hard to tell with Adventure Time's style. He looks younger than he did in Puhoy's alternate future.
Tumblr media
39) Lots of people have been theorising that the tattoo implies that something unfortunate has happened to Jake. Perhaps we'll get to know more about that in Together Again. Let's not dwell on it for now.
Tumblr media
40) A canon origin story for the shirt, plus a Bubbline first meeting! This overrides the P.B. & Marcy comic, and re-contextualises a whole bunch of the old Bubbline episodes!
Tumblr media
That’s all for now! Let me know if you can think of anything I missed!
💋  𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 , 𝐌𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 —-
SEND A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF YOURSELF AND I’LL TELL YOU WHICH MARVEL SUPERHERO I WOULD CAST YOU AS!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
* STORM —-
ORORO MUNROE is the most powerful mutant in the marvel franchise, as well as a fierce Wakandan defender and a loyal member of the X-Men. I was so enamored by Storm throughout my childhood, from the lightning struck hues to the long, white hair, and I can absolutely imagine you embodying a character as gorgeous, powerful, and stunning as she is!
Tumblr media
* CRYSTAL —-
CRYSTAL, on the other hand, is a member of the royal inhuman family who was sent to earth when her home was brought to ruin. She has the ability to manipulate the four elements — water. earth. fire. air. long ago, the four na — and i think that her power set is what originally made me think of you! Not to mention that you are absolute royalty, and i could absolutely imagine you holding that sovereign decorum. regardless, she also ends up having a pretty fucked up plot with quicksilver ( who is trash incarnate in the comics ) where he endangers their human child with terrigen gas, but she makes sure that he gets his ass beat! as she should!!
Tumblr media
* JANE FOSTER —-
I immediately thought of two characters when I thought of who you should be cast as, and JANE FOSTER was the former. A kind, intelligent nurse who falls in love with Thor and, in the later stages of her cancer diagnosis, is not only tasked with wielding Mjolnir in the god’s place, but does so fully aware of how much closer the weapon’s power brings her to death. She’s absurdly kind, and resilient, and an all around beacon of hope that you continue to exemplify — and I may or may not help that I immediately think of mythology whenever it comes to you.
Tumblr media
* VENUS —-
As for the latter character, VENUS is an “honest to gosh siren” who claimed the title of Aphrodite after being cursed with ethereal beauty, and you’d think “but d, when Aphrodite finds out that’s she’s going around plagiarizing her title, she’s gonna turn her ass into a spider, too.” and to that I would say, THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT! but apparently, Aphrodite actually came down and appointed her the role of Aphrodite herself, and if that entire story doesn’t scream a role that you were born to play, I don’t know what does.
Ravnica Allegiance Mechanics First Pass
Now that the mechanics for Ravnica Allegiance have been previewed, I’ll take a first pass at looking at them to see how they might play out for Limited.
Spectacle
Tumblr media
I really like the looks of Spectacle. It has a surprisingly large number of ways it can play. First, as with Light Up the Stage, it can be a cost-reduction mechanic, allowing you to cast powerful spells at a discount. Second, as with Rafter Demon, it can be an alternate casting cost that opens up a more powerful effect. A Vanilla 4/2 for 4 is mediocre filler in most draft decks, but one that also eats a card on ETB is a 2 for 1.
A third possible mode for this mechanic that we haven’t seen yet (so it may not be used), would be a way to avoid a drawback. Something along the lines of “When X enters the battlefield, discard a card unless you cast it for its spectacle cost.” The cost could be the same or similar to its normal CMC, but available to avoid the drawback. It’s also possible that there will be cards with this type of text, but without the keyword.
With Spectacle, I’d expect a lot of minor damage-dealing effects to help turn it on. Cards like Twin Bolt or Arc Lightning would be perfect inclusions in this set, and if the certain Cult Guildmage doesn’t have one effect that causes loss of life, I’d be shocked.
Spectacle strongly favors aggression. In some ways, it’s likely to play along the same lines as Raid in Ixalan. If you’re attacking, your opponents will be forced to accept the trades you set up for them, or risk you hitting them and getting your Spectacle bonus. How big of a deterrent that is will depend on how good the bonuses are. Also, small evasive creatures (like 1/1 Spirits, perhaps?) will be excellent in these decks, as will creatures with Haste. This means Spectacle will play really nicely with both Afterlife and Riot, making it a particularly synergistic mechanic. Overall, I think this is a really well-designed mechanical fit both for Rakdos and for the set as a whole.
Afterlife
Tumblr media
Afterlife feels like it can really go either way, depending on the other synergies in the guild. There are a few possibilities.
The most direct would be an aristocrats strategy with lots of sacrifice outlets and death payoffs. This would make the most sense, as death triggers would play really well with Spectacle on the Rakdos side. And an aristocrats theme can be surprisingly deep for limited, so I’m hopeful that this is the direction they go.
A second direction would be a go-wide attack strategy, depending on how big the Afterlife numbers get. Given that this is the Orzhov, however, I’m not thinking aggression like this is super likely, but even a single Inspired Charge type of spell could be a blowout with a pile of flying spirits.
The last possible direction this could go would be to have some amount of spirit tribal in the set. Again, I don’t think this is going to be a major direction, but it’s possible there will be a minor spirit sub-theme that. The one thing that makes me think this is a possibility is that it would allow for some mechanical overlap with the Azorius, who otherwise don’t particularly synergize with the Orzhov otherwise.
Altogether, my best guess is it’ll be an aristocrat-style theme with minor spirit synergies to tie it all together. If so, this mechanic could be pretty fun in Limited, and even prove to be fairly deep. Without those interactions, the mechanic on its surface is pretty one-dimensional. No matter what, I expect Afterlife creatures to generally be pretty good value.
Addendum
Tumblr media
Addendum is basically a keyworded version of the Time Spiral mechanic seen on Return to Dust, Might of Old Krosa, and the rest of the cycle. It’s an interesting design tactic, taking these old one-off card designs and keywording them (like Afterlife did with Doomed Traveler).
Addendum is the narrowest mechanic in the set, as it only goes on Instants (and maybe a few permanents with Flash). So really, what’s most interesting here is what’s not expressly printed on the card. To design enough cards with the keyword, there have to be an above-average number of Instants in White & Blue in this set. That means the guild will probably play a controlling strategy, similar to some builds of Dimir in Guilds, which can often operate almost entirely at Instant-speed.
It’s going to be hard to evaluate Addendum as a mechanic overall, since how valuable the bonus is will depend almost entirely on the individual card. It will be especially interesting to see if they have any payoff cards, such as an enchantment that says “Whenever you cast an Instant spell during your main phase...” Or maybe they’ll just allow for any spell during your main phase, if the bonus is incremental enough.
No matter what, however, it does mean that activated abilities and mana sinks may prove to be more useful than usual, to ensure you always have something to do with your mana. For this reason, I can see a subtle synergy with the Simic, whose creatures will have mana sinks attached.
Adapt
Tumblr media
People are dumping on Adapt left and right online, and I honestly don’t understand the hate. Wizards has been super upfront that this is a rework of Monstrosity, but some seem to be pissed off at that fact. Personally, I liked-not-loved Monstrosity, but it’s exactly the type of mechanic that helps glue sets together.
Adapt as a redesign comes with one advantage and one disadvantage over Monstrosity. First, the disadvantage. Since Adapt checks for existing +1/+1 counters on resolution, it means if counters get put on the creature any other way, it shuts off the ability. This means if you have other ways to put counters on your creatures (say... Simic Ascendancy & similar cards yet to be revealed), you need to activate the Adapt ability before using the Ascendancy. That won’t matter much for small creatures like the Homunculus Mutant above, but it would be a real shame to miss out on Adapting Zegana.
The advantage over Monstrosity is that, for Adapt, the counters can be removed from the creature, then Adapt can be activated again. This seems to be the direction that Wizards is thinking for the Simic this time around, so I’m expecting a number of cards to be previewed with the ability to remove counters from your creatures for a benefit.
Overall, I think the design possibilities enabled by Adapt far outweigh the occasional ordering issues, and I’m really excited by this direction. I predict that Adapt and the associated synergies in the set are going to play incredibly well, so fuck the haters.
As for synergies, while I think there’s some potential for Instant-speed shenanigans with the Azorius, the most direct will be with the +1/+1 counters in the Gruul mechanic.
Riot
Tumblr media
Riot is a slam dunk. It’s exactly what Gruul wants to be doing, and allows for a ton of flexibility if you’re on either the attack or defense. And which one you choose will also depend a lot on if you’re drifting into three colors at all.
If you’re leaning into the Green from Simic, the +1/+1 counters will be your best bet, since there are almost certainly going to be good ways to make use of them. If you’re more the Red from Rakdos direction, having your creatures come in with Haste will do wonders to help you sneak damage in and activate your Spectacle cards.
Riot is straightforward, but I have a feeling it will play out really nicely. You’ll never be safe against a Gruul player, since they’ll be able to come out of nowhere just about anytime. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see a Charging Monstrosaur impersonator in this set, and that’s no laughing matter.
Overall Impressions
In general, I like the looks of these mechanics, at least on the surface. Many of them will depend just on how well the synergy pieces are developed. Without good sacrifice outlets, Afterlife will be simply a little extra value. Without some ways to utilize counters for value, Adapt will disappoint. In general, I trust that Wizards has done a good job fleshing out these mechanics and giving them the environment they need to thrive. That said, they’ve disappointed me before (see Convoke from, I dunno... right now.)
The format looks like it will also have a similar distribution of archetypes as Guilds does. So far, I’m anticipating that Gruul will take the helm from Boros as the aggro deck of the format, though I’m guessing there will be highly aggressive builds of Rakdos available as well. Simic will likely take the role of tempo/midrange, and Orzhov will play the midrange value grind. Azorius will almost certainly be the primary control strategy, similar to how Dimir plays now.
That said, given how few previews we have now, it’s really a guessing game, and a lot can change once more cards are revealed. Either way, I’m cautiously optimistic by the looks of Ravnica Allegiance, and look forward to breaking in the format!
I’m picking Simic for my prerelease guild. What are you picking?
Descendants at a Comic Book Convention
Being raised in a world of fantasy and happily ever afters makes some fictional genres bland, but no one in Auradon can deny the addictive edge of a comic book. Magic is one thing, but super powers are totally different.
Almost everyone is a comic book nerd or has been one at some point, so Auradon Prep takes the senior class on a trip to a local Comic Book Convention. Here’s what transpires:
Everyone wears a costume. EVERYONE. And they either pick a costume that fits their personality or their looks. For example, Lonnie goes as Wonder Woman because she too is a strong woman who fights for what’s right. Meanwhile, Chad gels his hair and goes as Captain America on account that they’re “both pretty.”
The VKs are surprisingly into it. Evie was hooked on comics from the start, as were Jay and Carlos, but Mal took some convincing before she was sucked into the craze. Harry and Gil loved the action. On the other hand, Uma thought it was all ridiculous.
Mal and Ben opt for a couple’s outfit. Ben relates to The Incredible Hulk as a fellow innocent man with a tendency to get unbelievably angry, and Mal can pull off the leather look, so they go as Black Widow and Bruce Banner.
Evie and Doug also do a couple’s outfit of The Phoenix and The Cyclops. Doug gets his prescription glasses inserted into his “ruby quarts” glasses. Evie always liked how Jean Grey was a scientist and a crazy powerful mutant.
Carlos uses his white hair to be Quicksilver. Jay’s combat abilities and extreme agility makes him perfect for Nightwing. Gil goes as Thor. Harry goes as the Winter Soldier (metal limbs, blue eyes, mentally unstable…sounds about right)
Uma doesn’t even try. Jeans and a leather jacket. That’s all.
A lot of them entered some kind of competition. They all had some agreement that a comic convention medal meant bragging rights.
Jay enters a Nightwing competition where a bunch of athletic guys like him show off their abilities, and Jay does really well…up until he got disqualified for getting into a fight with another Nightwing.
Lonnie entered a similar competition, judged by actual Gods from Olympus since Wonder Woman and the Amazons come from Greek mythology. She fell second to an actual granddaughter of Zeus, and Lonnie throws a fit when she claims it was rigged. They took away her second place medal.
Ben and Mal entered a couples competition. Ben did an angry roar and everything! They would’ve won if it wasn’t for Harry and Chad. They were arguing right next to the competition over who’s character would win in a fight (Again, this is Winter Soldier and Captain America), and everyone mistook them as an entry for the couples’ competition. So, Chad and Harry won the couples’ costume competition, but then they fought over who got the medal, and they pretty much destroyed the whole display. Their medals were revoked.
Basically, everyone entered a competition, but no one won a medal.
Except Uma.
Harry and Gil and everyone else were dumbfounded when she waltzed up to them with a medal after disappearing without a word. She had a big, smug smile on her face.
“You’re not even wearing a costume!” Gil complained.
“Ha, I know! Ya’ll comic nerds are so dumb!” She laughs, “I was just standing around, and someone dragged me onto a stage. I dunno, but I won something!”
Everyone starts whining and complaining, saying how its not fair.
They all go dead silent when they see the cardboard cutout of a superhero father and his daughters right behind her.
It was a Black Lightning display.
Uma never saw it, and to this day she has no idea how she won her DC TV look-alike medal.
Game Recap Series: EIS 3
Well, it’s been 14 weeks since I was DMing last, and I am so so happy to be back in the chair. I’ve had a great three session-long period with Av/Cleo’s player running a Norse Myth inspired game, and now the Empires Intelligence Services crew are back at it.
So we begin as we left off, in the underground tunnels beneath the lake, over the spider-filled corpse of Marzia Teresi, a village girl from Brattenhome. The crew continue forward, ever vigilant for traps, and discover the tunnel takes a turn further south at a sharp bend, and at the outside edge of the bend they find a door. Investigating, they discover the room is filled with a Darkness spell, and deeper inside they can discern a Silence spell is layered over the top, creating a total sensory deprivation chamber. Jimothy heads in to explore, but unsure as to what he might find he abruptly changes his method of exploration and hurls his sharp grappling hook forward. As he does, the spells end and he discovers that his hook was buried in the collarbone of one of the missing villagers. Stunned and horrified, the group begin to argue about what to do, but before they get a chance to do anything, thousands of tiny, white baby spiders pour out of the wound in the villager’s neck and along the rope on the grappling hook. Alketh, reacting on impulse, fires off a fireball, shaping it around Jimothy but forgetting to spare the villager. He sets most of the room on fire, and as they back out to escape Jimothy is forced to abandon his grappling hook.
They keep moving around the facility, finding a few more cells, these ones empty, and over time begin to realise that the caverns are shaped like a spiders web. After a brief diversion where Relic gets caught in an overblown pit trap that sealed shut behind him (eventually they freed him when they realised that the trap was designed to hold, not kill, and they discovered the reset switch hidden behind a camouflaged panel in the wall), they find a guard bunk room with chests of cultist robes, which they each don, and a single silver necklace shaped like a dangling spider, which Av puts on after she gets the okay from Arner and Alketh, who find nothing especially cursey about it. Celia, exploring a side corridor using her magical coatl tattoo, reports the discovery of another set of stairs leading down. They group decide to leave further explanation of the facility for later and push on to find the cult.
They head downstairs, hearing the sounds of a crowd, and exit the tunnel onto a ledge over a massive underground chasm. Over 200 cultists and 50 mutated villagers---around half of which are hulking, chitinous, fully-formed spider-men---stood arrayed in front of a stage, on which a small group stood. As they watched, a single figure with a large staff separated herself from the group and moved to the front of the stage, flanked by two huge blazing braziers. She speaks, and when she does the sound seems to come from right in front of every person, not raised in a shout but audible from everywhere in the room.
“It seems that we are to have...guests. They come to end our great work; this cannot be abided.
We came here, so long ago, to complete a great work. Those who came before us have broken, have wallowed in debasement and heresy, and we will bring them to heel.
Go now, into the town, and bring me everyone you can find. With our army a thousand strong we will spread underground, and no-one will know peace again. Go, now.”*
As the cultists move for the doors down the side of the room, the figure turns to a few of the fully completed mutations, and says;
“They’re here, now. Go and bring them to me.”
8 of the mutants rush across the room, moving blisteringly fast, but the room is over 600 feet long and so it still takes some time. Arner uses his giant Repeating Hand Ballistae (massive crossbow) and drops two feet of iron and wood into the shoulder of the figure on the dais, who turned and fled through a set of double doors behind the stage. The rest of the group readied themselves to engage in combat with the mutants.
However, in the two rounds of movement required to reach the party, the spidermen were preparing, using one-shot magic crystals to cast a modified version of Immunity to Fire and Haste on themselves. They blasted into the group and scattered them, dealing horrifying amounts of damage in short time. After two rounds, which nearly killed Relic and forced Nerra, Celia and Avoyelles to use whatever means they had to get off the edge of the cliff (rope, ninja skillz and a flying broom, respectively) and forced Relic, Arner and Alketh to flee back towards the stairs, leaving Jimothy out in the open. They managed to kill one of the mutants but six of them crowded Jimothy, and in no time at all he was on death’s door. Rather than kill him outright, however, one grabbed his body and started to flee, while the rest jostled for position to chase the others up the narrow tunnel.
Working quickly, Av casts Healing Word to bring Jimothy back to consciousness, and then when she is next able to cast a spell she uses Hold Person on the mutant, which is thankfully still classed as humanoid and not aberration (my fault). Celia Misty Steps (I love Eladrin) over to the two of them, wrenches open the mutants paralysed arms, and frees Jimothy, the two of them jumping out to a rope Celia had suspended from the broom.
In the tunnel, Alketh for the third time had the same terrible idea, and finally decided to go for it. He touched the Glutton’s Fork (I use a modified Fantasy CostCo list as a shop list for the capital city) to an Arcane Core (based on the TAZ one but far more versatile and, frankly, insanely overpowered), and ate it. In his little Dragonborn tummy terrible, terrible things began to happen, all fuelled by about five pounds of pure, undiluted crystalline magic. He fell to his hands and knees and let loose a breath weapon that was less a stream of acid and more a jet of superheated plasma, turning all six remaining spidermen in the tunnel to smoke shadows and burning through so much of Alketh’s vitality in the process that he was immediately dropped to 1 hit point and fell unconscious.
Despite their best efforts, Av, Jimothy, Celia and Nerra were unable to kill the last spider-man before he escaped through the double doors, so they instead used their stones of farspeech to warn the Mayor of Brattenhome that a small army was on its way. Worse still, Av and Jimothy were both certain they had heard the voice of the woman who spoke some time before, but they couldn’t figure out where. They regrouped, backtracked out of the facility and raced to town after as short a rest as would allow them healing, knowing that every moment wasted risked tragedy.
When they eventually made it back to the town around dusk, they found the citizens of Brattenhome were mounting a brave defence against their own families and friends and the monsters they had allied themselves with. But although initially outnumbered and overpowered, the citizens used every trick they had to corral the invaders away. The Krok stablemaster marshalled his gigantic crocodillian steeds into blocking off the North road, the barricaded Town Hall rained magical attacks on the West Road by way of office clerk and level one sorcerer Ifraan Basara and his Firebolt spells and Avoyelles and her Call Lightning. In the south, the fishermen had pulled their boats out into the centre of the river to blockade the cultists approaching from the water, and the homesteaders had overturned carts to block the bridge and were holding their barricade their. And on the East road, Sheriff James and what remained of his guard outfit were using pistol and bows to thin the approaching hordes. Alketh awoke to find the war going on around him and echo-like spasms of raw magic overload twitching through his body. For a short time, his magic was wild and unpredictable, randomly producing different variations on the spell effects and even sometimes casting from his hands without his command. While the effects of the Arcane Core were beneficial, they were too unpredictable and wild for Alketh to feel fully comfortable with them, and he instinctively knew that trying something like that again might kill him, and possibly everyone around him.
Jimothy took directly to the streets, carving swathes through the cultists with his terrifying Daedalus Blade, meeting up Celia---who had come by river using Krearshe’s water skimmer---as he did so. He saved a contingent of villagers, the three workers at the Temple of Avandra and one of the school teachers, from the chains they had been placed in by some cultists, and something nagged at his head. After a time the fighting stopped, and the town, though thankful, were more interested in picking over the dead, although the innkeeper did offer to waive their charge for their rooms.
Suddenly, as he helped the clerics and the teacher back to their respective flocks/classes, Jimothy realised; the voice of the woman on the stage, the one he knew; it was Ashe Corria, the schoolmistress. She was the leader of the cult.
Alketh went to check up on his old friend, the oddball thri-keen thaumaturgist Bakar al-Haque. He found an empty, vacant lot where Bakar’s shop had been, and an envelope on the ground where it had been. Inside was a card, which read;
“Alketh,
You were a good friend.
I’ll see you again.”
That night, everyone slept, even the elves who didn’t need it, such was their exhaustion. Alketh, still twitching from the magic overload, laid down and closed his eyes, only for bizarre dreams to invade his mind.
As follows is the exact description of the dream given to Alketh’s player:
“As you fall into a restful sleep, images and sounds clatter around your head.
You see a polar tundra, and the roaring scream of some gigantic creature
You see a mine, long abandoned, ivy growing around the supports and a pair of red glowing eyes, six feet high, deep within
You see a tower, spearing up into the sky
You see a human man and an eladrin woman, dressed in fine clothing, holding hands and looking worried
You see a beautiful elven figure, sitting on a high backed chair
You hear a maniacal laugh
You hear a terrible scream
You hear a beguiling, implacable voice, saying the words “Interesting. Very interesting. Bianca; attend…”
Tune in two weeks from now as they finally go to end Ashe Corria and destroy the Cult once and for all.
*I tried to get this out in person, but my group just cannot shut the fuck up. I hope they read this because it’s important information.
Vans Warped Tour is one of the most iconic traveling rock shows that has returned every single summer in the United States since 1995. This year the Vans Warped Tour is going on its final full cross country run. Vans Warped tour was created by Kevin Lyman, who focused mostly on alternative rock music in the beginning until it eventually transformed into what it is today.  The only downfall to this festival is it’s only in town for a single day, which makes it extremely hard to see some of the artists you have been waiting to see for ages.
Each year that I have attended the Vans Warped Tour, they have never ceased to amaze me with the artists that they choose to bring on tour with them. Since this year is the last year of Warped Tour the feeling is very bittersweet. I remember the first time I attended the Tour, I was full of emotions and very excited to take in the experience of being at the Warped Tour. I have met many artists since I started going back in 2014, such as Falling In Reverse, Motionless In White, Attila, Jeffrey Star, Miss May I, and many more of my favorite artists.
Beartooth
Hands Like Houses
Memphis May Fire
IPrevail
The tour brings a few traveling stages with them to each venue to incorporate with stages that are already established inside the respected venue.  Each year at the Darien Center the stages are set up almost the same. The stages are scattered throughout the extra parking lot from the doors all the way back to the main stages in the back of the venue.
This year the stages include Journey’s Left foot, Journey’s right foot, Mutant Red Dawn, Mutant White Lightning, owly.fm and The Full Sail Stage. This year’s lineup is very exciting for me because there are a lot of artists I really enjoy watching perform such as The Amity Affliction, Movements, Mayday Parade, Real Friends, and many more!
There are a ton of can’t miss bands on this lineup espceially if you are going to the Darien Center venue. Every Time I Die is a Buffalo native, If you haven’t seen them before, get out there and check them out! Tonight Alive is a must see band as well, they are big supporters of the I AM movement to help people prove that their worth is more than what others say. Ice Nine Kills always puts on a great show, every time I have seen them they have exceeded my expectations. If you are looking to throw down in the pit and mosh your heart out Wage War is a great option for you. If you are looking for something that’s not heavy and is acoustic, check out This Wild Life. Kublai Khan, The Amity Affliction, Movements, Dayseeker and We The Kings are also all great bands to check out!
Tumblr media
At the Darien Center, Vans Warped Tour can be a little hectic because it is only in the area for the day. The gates open around 11 AM, so get there early and try to avoid the line! As an avid Warped Tour attendee, skipping this line is essential in starting your whole day out with a bang. By bringing just 3 canned good items (the cans cannot be dented or expired), a $5 dollar donation or a used cellphone you can skip the longest line of your life (as it seems to be). And you are also able to get into the venue 10-15 minutes earlier,  making it easier to find all your favorite artist’s tents and the stages you plan on being at all day, but you sometimes you have to wait a little bit longer to get to the main stages in the extra parking lot due to them not finished being set up.
By bringing one of the three options listed above and skipping the line, you are also helping Feed Our Children NOW! to improve lives of children located in the United States. The food drive helps immediate needs for a better future for low income families & Children. So don’t forget to donate!
There are many other great causes that support Warped Tour such as Can You Hear Me?, They work with musicians to raise awareness, take action and provide a supportive, empowering community for teens struggling with issues such as mental health, bullying, and peer pressure. Stapaw raises awareness about discrimination of piercings and tattoos in the workplace. To Write Love On Her Arms is a nonprofit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury, and suicide. Don’t Forget to check out one of the many great causes Warped Tour has to offer! Although, this isn’t the only line you are going to find yourself standing in. There are many other lines such as merchandise, bathroom, water refill, food, and etc. So be prepared!
Warped Tour 101 – Here are some tips to stay your best during your day at the festival.
 Tip #1 – Get plenty of sleep the night before. I know it’s hard when you are really excited to get up and go see that band that you have been wanting to see for ages. But you don’t want to get tuckered out too early, especially if you want to rage to your favorite band(s) in the mosh pits.
 Tip #2  – When packing your backpack the night before, make sure you have everything you could possibly need. If you know its going to rain, bring some baggies for your electronics and a poncho just in case. You don’t want to get wet and stay stuck in those wet clothes all day. Bring some permanent markers, I can’t even remember the last time I went to a concert without one. A marker is very essential. You could catch your favorite artist walking by and then you could grab a quick autograph! Sun screen is also an important Warped Tour item to have as it tends to be one of the sunniest days out of the year it seems like. Or at least up here in New York.
 Tip #3 – When you get up in the morning try to eat something even if it’s just a granola bar… trust me. At the venue you will spend an arm and a leg on food and won’t have enough money to buy that tee shirt or any other merchandise from your favorite band. You can bring in a bottle of water as long as it is sealed and just keep refilling it at the water refill stations supplied around the venue.
 Tip #4 – Keep your eyes open and watch your surroundings especially if you don’t want to find yourself falling into a mosh pit or even have crowd surfers falling on top of you. Sometimes you find yourself getting lost in the music. I’m guilty of this… regardless you don’t want to end up getting hurt because you aren’t paying attention. Nobody wants to get accidentally punched in the face by someone moshing, kicked in the head by a crowd surfer, or even having a crowd surfer dropped on top you. Be aware of your surroundings, you don’t want to take a trip to the hospital or lose something of value.
 Tip #5 – Don’t get upset when both your favorite bands are playing at the same time. Figure out which one you want to see more because eventually they will go on another tour at a later date. I have sacrificed seeing my favorite artist’s full set just to go watch another band I just started listening to and also really enjoy. It happens!
 Tip #6 – If you are lucky enough to be a photographer for the day at your Warped Tour date, do not forget to pack extra batteries, SD cards (that actually work)! I’m guilty, when I was taking photos last summer, I had borrowed an SD card from a family member and I lost a lot of photos because they got corrupted. If you know it’s going to rain make sure you have lots of plastic bags! You definitely don’t want to ruin your camera for one small thing.
Tip #7 – If you plan on going by yourself, try to meet up with some friends that might end up going! You will have more fun jamming out to your favorite artists as a group than just by yourself. If you have friends that have never been to Warped Tour also bring them along, even if there is only one artist that they like, they will still have fun!
New Years Day
The Vans Warped Tour is a tour everyone should experience at least once in their life time no matter how old or young you are. Get out there this summer! It’s going to be the final full cross country run. If you haven’t attended before make sure this is the time to do it! This tour really brings people together no matter what artist you are there to see. The tour starts on June 21st and runs through August 5th. I can’t wait to see what the Vans Warped Tour has in store for us this summer especially since its going to be the final full cross country run. Good luck out there! Make plenty of friends this summer!
Forever Warped: A Final Goodbye
After nearly 25 years, a staple part of summer is finally coming to an end as we know it. Since 1995 Warped Tour has been home to punks, misfits, and everyone in-between; allowing people of all ages to come together for one day and take in such an eclectic mix of music and culture. With the pressure of the final tour upon them fans made sure to take complete advantage of their last chance and came out by the thousands, selling out multiple dates across the country and even in Toronto, Canada. GBTRS was lucky enough to be able to attend both the sold-out Toronto date as well as the Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and make memories alongside Vans Warped Tour for one last time.
Tumblr media
Fans in Canada turned out in the masses, proving to Kevin Lyman and the tour that it was well worth the hassle of crossing the border with hundreds of band and crew members. Selling out The Flats at Budweiser Stage, thousands of eager fans filled the waterfront and enjoyed watching their favorite acts from the past and present. I couldn't help but start my day with Doll Skin, a band we have worked closely with through our Roadie For A Day program, and to say I was blown away was an understatement. Watching these women give an energetic and tantalizing set was a rush, you've got to keep your eyes on this band because they're going to take the world by storm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent a lot of time in Toronto checking out the bands on the Owly.fm Stage, most are up-in-coming acts that hustle all summer to perform and captivate their audiences. As It Is, who recently spoke back on negative comments made toward mental illness from a member of another band on the tour, played an amazing set full of songs ranging from fan-favorite "Dial Tones" to new songs like "The Stigma (Boys Don't Cry)" and vocalist Patty Walters spoke to his battles with mental illness and let the crowd know that they're not alone in their struggles. Other high energy acts like Chase Atlantic and Don Broco filled the day and kept fans dancing into the night.
Tumblr media
A Warped Tour wouldn't be complete without taking in some metal and hitting up the Mutant White Lightning Stage to catch Dayseeker live finally. Well hyped up throughout the tour, Dayseeker was sure to not disappoint with a crushing set that reminded me why I ever started coming to Warped Tour in the first place. Being able to discover new music that moves you and find acts that carry such passion for what they do is revitalizing.
Tumblr media
Special guests Silverstein hopped on the tour in Toronto and their hometown crowd poured their love and hearts back into the band with a sea of fans watching and dancing as they played their set. Similarly, Sum 41 attracted the largest crowd of the day, with thousands of fans piling up onto the beach to catch their only set on the final run of Vans Warped Tour. Playing tons of nostalgic fan favorites from their album Does This Look Infected? and of course, closing the set with "Fat Lip". Seeing Sum 41 was one of the most pinnacle, final Warped moments for fans, most who had listened to these songs when they originally came out in 1995. Having that sense of nostalgia tied with the finality of this last tour made for a cathartic experience for all that chose to take part in it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Day two brought GBTRS through Cuyahoga Falls, OH for more adventures and special guests. Kicking off the morning fans fried their brains with a band called The Maine and enjoyed dancing and singing along to new bops off of their most recent album Lovely Little Lonely and old songs like "Girls Do What They Want". Even security guards were caught smiling and every photographer in the photo pit couldn't help but join in on the singalong. A special surprise came after The Maine's set over at the Transform Stage with a Canadian melodic-hardcore band called Widmore. Creating an emotionally driven and captivating set to a small crowd of fans, Widmore blew me away with both their sound and performance.
Tumblr media
The first special guest of the day came from Knocked Loose, playing one of five dates on the Mutant White Lightning Stage. Fans and Warped crew members alike were eagerly awaiting this set, filling up the stage and mosh pits to show Knocked Loose love. Vocalist, Bryan Garris shouted out women in hardcore during their set and they gave the high octane performance they are known and loved for. Right after was the other special guest for the beautiful and sunny day in Ohio, Underoath, who only played three dates on the bill and this date being their last. Charging the Journey's Left Foot Stage, thousands of fans gathered to watch the legendary act grace the Warped Tour stage for one last time. Dozens of crowd surfers made their way to the front of the crowd and just a chance of getting close to the band and fans of every age could be caught losing their minds in the moment.
Tumblr media
Every set seemed to be more intimate and emotional than ever before, as each day there was an ever-lingering finality knowing that it'd be the last time these bands would play these stages in these cities. Despite being in the first week of a twenty-day stretch without a day off, crew members and bands still spilled their hearts into every moment and ensured that fans were both safe and having fun. Heading back to the Owly.fm Stage for the second day I made sure to catch Sleep On It, a Chicago, IL based alternative/indie band known for charming performances. They lived up to my expectations and kept fans of all ages enticed in their set, having a fan as young as seven in the crowd on her mom's shoulders.
Tumblr media
I sealed the night with two Warped Tour veterans who have been staple acts on the bill for years now, Mayday Parade and Every Time I Die. Take a moment to soak that sentence in, what tour will we ever be able to see a pop-punk act play right before a chaotic metal/hardcore band again? Both bands were sure to include nostalgic fan favorites like "Jersey" and "Jaime All Over" for Mayday Parade, and "Underwater Bimbos from Outer Space" and "No Son of Mine" from Every Time I Die allowing fans to create new memories attached to old songs. Every Time I Die put on the wild and highly interactive performance they're widely known and loved for, with multiple members diving themselves into the crowd and giving fans every ounce of their energy for that half-hour segment.
Warped Tour, for so many of us, has been a refuge and solace in the summer; a place where no matter who you were, or what you looked like, you could be yourself and immerse yourself completely into the music of every genre. A place where you can take advantage of non-profit organizations like Hope For The Day and The Canvas Foundation and learn how to express yourself and forever be reminded you're not alone. With twenty-four long, exciting, and unpredictable years under its belt, Warped Tour will always hold a special place in the heart of every misfit kid out there. So here's to being Forever Warped, may the memories you made with the tour last you a lifetime!
White Wings and Guitar Strings
Nightangel Band AU - Kurt gets dragged to a concert by his friend and ends up enjoying it more than he thought, thanks to a certain guitar player with angel wings.
I know people have done similar concepts before, but I figured I’d try my hand at it.  Please enjoy!
“Sowho are the Horsemen?”
“Only the best band ever!” says Peter, his eyes lighting up with excitement, and Kurt knows he’s going to be here a while.  If there’s one thing Peter can talk about endlessly, it’s his favorite bands.
“They’re an all-mutant band!” Peter points to a poster on his bedroom wall, apparently depicting the Horsemen in question, “Sometimes they’ll even use their powers during the show!  Like, Storm - she’s the one with the mohawk by the way - she does weather manipulation and she’ll have thunder and lightning go off over the stage!  And Psylocke - she’s that purple girl right there - she’s got the most amazing voice!  And sometimes Angel will fly out into the audience and they’re just so cool, how have you not heard of them?”
Kurt takes a closer look at the poster, “Why are they called the Horsemen if two of them are women?”
“Huh?  Oh, I dunno.  Maybe they just thought it sounded cool.”
“So how does your dad know them?”
“I think maybe he does tech for them?  Also, you know him, he’s a big supporter of anything mutant-related.  That’s why they gave him a discount on these tickets.”
“Are you still sure you want me to come with you?  This seems more like the type of music Scott would be into.”
“Oh, come on, you’ll like them!  I mean, I know they’re not Mozart or Gregorian chants or whatever you listen to…”
“I listen to contemporary stuff too, you know.” says Kurt, pouting a little.
“Then you’ll like them!  Trust me, Kurt, they’ll blow you away.”
***
Two days later, Kurt is standing in a concert venue, watching his friend have a miniature freak-out.
“We’re right next to the stage!” Peter says, nearly vibrating with anticipation, “This is gonna rock!”
While he doesn’t want to spoil Peter’s mood, Kurt is less enthused.  On the one hand, it’s nice that they’ll have such a clear view of the performers.  On the other hand, his brain didn't make the connection that “next to the stage” meant “very loud speakers dangerously close to your ears” until just now.  Oh well.  He supposes he can always slip away to the bathroom if the music gets too loud.
But he doesn’t have time to worry about that just now, because Peter is frantically tugging his sleeve as the Horsemen step onstage and begin their first number.
Now that he’s seeing them live, Kurt can tell why Peter likes them so much.
For starters, the purple-haired girl, Psylocke, is an absolute knockout, both in terms of looks and her singing voice.  Sometimes she’ll whisper seductively into the microphone, her voice husky and soft, other times she’ll sing out clear, pure notes, laden with emotion, and other times she’ll nearly scream, filled with triumphant rage.
The other girl, Storm, is also fantastic.  She’s on drums and there’s an overwhelming power to her performance.  Sometimes, she’ll play in such a way that the sounds remind Kurt of rolling thunder.  Other times, clouds that Kurt thinks were created with a fog machine until he realizes  she’s summoning them herself will gather over her head and cause actual rolls of thunder to punctuate her beats.
But more than anything, Kurt’s attention is drawn to the boy with the wings.  Angel, Peter had said his name was, and he certainly lives up to it.  He’s on electric guitar, standing closest to where Kurt and Peter are, and he is magnificent.
His wings are enormous and a dazzling shade of white.  During solos, he’ll spread them out so that they seem to fill the stage, dominating Kurt’s entire field of vision.  He tosses his messy, blond curls out of his face as he launches into another set of riffs.  His well-muscled chest is shiny from exertion.  Kurt can hardly bear to look away from him for more than a second.
After the first few songs, he seems to notice Kurt’s attention is on him as well.  At first, Kurt is embarrassed, not wanting the angelic player to be freaked out by his appearance.  But Angel doesn’t seem to mind the attention.  On the contrary, he milks it for all it’s worth.  Every once in a while, he’ll glance out into the audience, making sure Kurt’s eyes are still on him.  Once he knows they are, he’ll wink and grin at him, giving him looks that make Kurt shiver where he stands.
During one of his solos, he takes the opportunity to get even closer to where Kurt and Peter are standing.  He kneels down right near the edge of the stage, shredding away at his guitar, and Kurt suddenly understands why concert-goers always scream their heads off.  He’s screaming too and he can’t even remember when he started.  Once the solo is over, Angel reaches out a hand into the audience and brushes against Kurt’s own outstretched hand, just for a moment.  For the first time, Kurt is grateful for all these bodies pressed up against his right now, because if they weren’t there, he’s sure he would’ve fallen down in ecstasy.
Eventually, the band takes a break, waving to the audience as they make their way offstage, and Peter turns to Kurt, eyes shining.
“So, what’d you think?”
“That was…That was…Dear Lord.”
“I know, right?” says Peter, “Man, you were really digging that guitar player, weren’t you?”
Kurt’s face turns magenta, “Well, I was just…you know…appreciating his music.”
“Mm-hm.  And his sweaty chest.”
“Oh, all right, guilty.”
Peter grins, “I knew it!  See, I told you you’d like them.  Come on, let’s go find my dad.”
“What for?”
“To see if he’ll give us a backstage tour.  Who knows, we might even meet the band!  Wouldn’t that be something?”
Meeting the band?  Kurt rapidly runs his claws through his hair, trying to make it look decent.
Peter laughs, “You look fine, Kurt.  Come on, I want to see if Storm will sign my t-shirt.”
***
Warren takes a swig from his water bottle.  The audience tonight is his favorite kind, loud and wild.
Around him, his fellow band members prepare for their next set.  Betsy is touching up her eyeliner in the mirror.  Ororo is fiddling with her drumsticks, already antsy to get back onstage and perform again.
“Nice one with the thundercloud, ‘Ro.” says Betsy, putting her liner back in her makeup bag.
“You don’t think it was too much?” says Ororo.
“Nah, they loved it.” says Warren, smoothing out some of his feathers, “The crowd always goes nuts for a good thunder-and-lightning show.”
Ororo raises an eyebrow, “To be honest, Warren, I’m surprised you even noticed.  You were so busy making bedroom eyes at that blue guy in the front row.”
Warren can feel his cheeks heating up, “What are you talking about?”
Betsy, never one to skip an opportunity to tease Warren mercilessly, pipes up, “You always did have a weakness for pretty boys, Warren.  It’s like your Achilles’ heel or something.”
“Okay, so maybe I looked over at him a couple times.  But come on, how often do you see an audience member who’s blue?  And he was right in the front row too!”
Betsy smirks, “Methinks the gentleman doth protest too much.”
“Don’t you go quoting Shakespeare at me with your posh accent!”
There’s a knock on the door and Erik sticks his head in, “Am I interrupting anything?”
“No, you are not.” says Warren, thankful for the change of subject, “How are the lights and sound going?”
“Everything’s running smoothly.  Listen, would you mind doing a quick meet-and-greet?  My kid and his friend are here.”
Ororo smiles, “So we finally get to meet the infamous Peter we’ve heard so much about?  I’m down.”
Betsy and Warren nod in agreement.  Erik turns and ushers in two teenage boys.  One has silver hair and a slight resemblance to Erik and the other oh shit, oh shit, it’s the blue kid!
Ororo nudges Warren in the ribs with her elbow, grinning.  Warren slaps her arm away.
The silver-haired boy (Peter, apparently) makes a bee-line for Betsy and Ororo, asking for autographs and the blue boy is left facing Warren.
“I, um, I thought you were really great out there.  You, uh…you rocked it.” The boy’s cheeks are turning purple and Warren realizes that means he’s blushing.  How adorable is that?
“I don’t think I caught your name.”
“I-It’s Kurt.”
“Kurt, huh?  Nice to meet you, Kurt.  I’m Warren.”
Kurt looks a bit confused, “Not Angel?”
“I’m Angel to my fans.  My friends call me Warren.”  It’s a bit bold of him to just give out his human name like that, but the spreading blush on Kurt’s face is worth it.
Peter, who is having Betsy and Ororo sign the back of his shirt, mouths “Ask for his autograph” at Kurt.
“Oh, um…can I…will you…can you sign something for me?”
Warren smiles.  This kid is too cute for words.  “Sure.  Got something for me to sign?”
Kurt frantically digs through his pockets for a scrap of paper.  Finally, he pulls out what looks like a business card from his back pocket.  Warren takes it and begins writing.
“Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.” he reads off the card, “Is that your school?”
“Yes, Peter and I attend there.”
“Nice.  Hey, Erik, isn’t that the school your boyfriend owns?  Xavier’s?”
Erik frowns, “Don’t you have a second half of a show to put on in a few minutes?”
“Right.” Warren hands the card back to Kurt, “It was nice meeting you, Kurt.  Enjoy the rest of the show.”  He gives him a wink, which causes Kurt to nearly hide his face in his hands.
“Y-yeah.  Good luck with the rest of your show.”
Warren watches as Kurt is led out of the dressing room by his friend, before finishing preparations for the second half of the show.
***
As they are leaving the concert venue, Kurt can’t stop grinning.  This has been an amazing night.
“So,” says Peter, smugly, “Was that awesome or was it awesome?”
“I’m so glad you convinced me to come here tonight.”
“I know, that was such a great concert!  Hey, can I see the autograph you got?”
Kurt pulls the card out of his pocket.  The name “Warren Worthington III” is written in tall, messy handwriting along the top.  And beneath it…
“Holy crap, dude, he gave you his phone number!”
Kurt stares down at the number in disbelief.
Peter grins, “That’s some mad game right there!  You’ve gotta teach me your secrets.”
Kurt shoves him good-naturedly and the two walk home.
That night, his dreams are filled with images of Warren.  Of his golden curls and white wings and strong hands strumming guitar strings.
The 20 best Marvel films – ranked!
The 20 best Marvel films – ranked!
20. Ghost Rider (2007)
No list of Marvel films – or of any films – can be without Nicolas Cage. Here he plays the terrifying Ghost Rider. By day: stunt motorbike rider Johnny Blaze. By night: a flaming skeleton forced by Satan to ride around collecting souls for hell on his lethal chopper.
19. Ant-Man (2015)
There is something funny, understated and self-deprecatory in the superpowers of Ant-Man – chiefly an ability to get really, really small – and Paul Rudd was perfectly cast in this likable Marvel movie, originally written by Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish. Like many Marvel films with a more obvious comic touch, it has grown in retrospect.
18. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were in their late 20s when they played Peter Parker, but Tom Holland was just 21 when he made his bashful Spidey debut in Captain America: Civil War. As a result, he was instantly more credible as a high-school kid, coming under the wisecracking mentorship of Tony Stark. Holland has been absolutely great in the role since, instantly getting Marvel’s verbal and physical language of dynamic, yet self-aware superheroism.
17. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Time-travel was a complicating factor in this X-Men movie – perhaps too much so – but it at least brought us Evan Peters’s Quicksilver, who features in the glorious “bullet-time” sequence, in which the lightning-fast teenager ambles around catching bullets in the air as they are shot towards Magneto and Prof Xavier, all set to Jim Croce’s yearningly melancholicTime In a Bottle.
16. Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi made a splash with this, the first of his original trio, and he persuaded a new generation to love Spider-Man as the existential underdog, the winner who is also a loser. Filmed before 9/11 but released afterwards, Raimi had to junk a spectacular shot of a helicopter being caught in webbing strung between the two WTC towers, along with much contingent narrative.
15. Iron Man (2008)
Tumblr media
The casting of Robert Downey Jr as the central pillar of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was very important – his quicksilver wit and his handsomeness, salted with cynicism and bleariness, allowed the films a crucial difference in tone and feel to previous superhero movies, giving them a new kind of savvy comedy. The first Iron Man, directed by John Favreau, isn’t my favourite, but it was a vital foundation of Marvel’s filmic cosmos.
14. Thor (2011)
For sheer grandeur and a very literate, almost Shakespearean sense of cosmic power politics, director Kenneth Branagh gave us a very enjoyable drama centred on the great deity Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth. He has issues with his father, Odin, played – perhaps inevitably – by Anthony Hopkins. Tom Hiddleston played his malcontent evil brother, Loki, in the great tradition of Jeremy Irons’s Uncle Scar in The Lion King. The giant universal vistas of Asgard, Jotunheim and Earth are created with surreal brio.
13. Doctor Strange (2016)
Doctor Strange is the most avowedly, even pedantically freaky hero in the MCU: the statutory Stan Lee cameo has the great man on a city bus, chuckling over a copy of Aldous Huxley’s Doors of Perception – the closest a Marvel film will come to actually advocating drug abuse. Benedict Cumberbatch cemented his unique A-list status as Dr Stephen Strange, the wealthy and temperamental neurosurgeon who is terribly injured in a car crash, but then ascends to a higher level of psychokinetic mastery thanks to Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One. The landscape-folding moments of surreality are more lightly managed than in Christopher Nolan’s Inception.
12. Logan (2017)
A fascinatingly downbeat movie from the Marvel canon: superpowers are one thing, but no-one said the chracters were immortal. So, what happens when superheroes get old? This film goes some way towards an answer with this tale of Logan: X-Men’s Wolverine – seen at some stage in future, making an incognito living as a limo driver while caring for a decrepit Charles Xavier, and enduring severe pain every time his claws are unsheathed.
11. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
In the great bible of Marvel, the cataclysmic Avengers: Infinity War is the nearest to the Book of Revelations. It’s the closest the franchise comes to actually showing us the awful reality of an end to everything – that unthinkable final curtain the mighty battles between good and evil appear to have been gesturing at before now. The management of tone is expert: at one moment tragic, the next funny, and the next just exciting.
10. Deadpool (2016)
Marvel humour is at its most studenty and self-aware in this movie about the mutant mercenary assassin who first emerged on screen as a cameo in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2009. It’s also very macabre and very funny. Ryan Reynolds is once again Deadpool, the black sheep of the X-Men family.
9. Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
The two great enemies of picnics get co-billing in this hilarious, charming and distinctly lovable film tackling the micro-universe, the second in the Ant-Man series. Paul Rudd is great as Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly is formidable as the Wasp. Michael Douglas has a certain old-school aplomb as Dr Hank Pym, and Michelle Pfeiffer has a great supporting turn as the Wasp’s mother, Janet van Dyne.
8. X-Men (2000)
This was the first of many X-Men films, and in Bryan Singer it had a director overtaken by controversy, although at the time, the only controversy concerned the film’s extraordinary – or crass – “concentration camp” scene set in Poland in 1944. This was the movie that brought us Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as Professor X and Magneto.
7. Iron Man 3 (2013)
Not everyone agrees, but my favourite of the Iron Man films is the third – because of the lip-smacking relish brought to the writing and directing by Shane Black, a master of action comedy. Downey Jr is on fine form as the titular mercurial mogul and, in an age when we have to endure Elon Musk and his unwieldy submarine, Stark’s persona seems charm itself.
6. Marvel Avengers Assemble (2012)
Perhaps this is the quintessential MCU film, which introduced mainstream audiences to the idea of mashing up the lives and existences of superheroes to have them work together and encroach on each other’s adventures while playing everything more or less deadpan. This one teamed Iron Man, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor, Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) – creating a virtual blood-sugar overload of superhero potency. They faced Hiddleston’s outrageously evil Loki. Johansson is superb as Black Widow.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Director James Gunn has fallen on his sword for inappropriate tweets, but this hasn’t cancelled the claim his Guardians of the Galaxy movies have on the hearts of Marvel fans. Again, the keynote of comedy is all-important. Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, the Han-Solo-ish intergalactic freebooter, listening to his retro playlist on an old-school Sony Walkman and commanding a ragtag multi-species crew, a tree-shaped creature called Groot, a huge guy called Drax, a talking raccoon called Rocket and a green alien called Gamora. There is a rush of absurdity, but excitement as well.
4. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Sam Raimi’s second film in the original Spider-Man series is often thought the best of the trilogy, and perhaps even the best Marvel film. It’s certainly the most serious, and taps into the melancholy self-questioning of Spider-Man, while Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus is still the best Marvel supervillain.
3. Blade II (2002)
This sequel to 1998’s Blade was directed by Guillermo del Toro with a swirling, demonic energy. The story once again concerns the charismatic daywalker, played by Wesley Snipes. It is a delirious Gothic-tech martial arts movie and the fight sequences Del Toro unleashes are horribly exciting. Not a typical superhero film, in many ways, but a great one.
2. Black Panther (2018)
This superb film is a deliriously entertaining Afrofuturist adventure, with strange echoes of Rider Haggard. Black Panther was established as one of Marvel’s greatest heroes, and Ryan Coogler’s movie showed that having a nearly non-white cast was not simply a matter of diversity signalling – it was a colossal box office hit across the board, with a richer and more cultish element of fantasy than other Marvel films. (It also boasts MCU’s first woman cinematographer: the Oscar-nominated Rachel Morrison. Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, has promised to get more women writers and directors on board, with next year’s Captain Marvel co-written and co-directed by Anna Boden. So far, the only Marvel female writing credit is Nicole Perman for Guardians Of The Galaxy.)
1. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Tumblr media
Somehow the Marvel planets came into alignment more perfectly, more sublimely, with this film than with any other Marvel movie: it is smart, visually exciting and perhaps above all, funny. And it’s funny in a way that only Marvel movies can be, demonstrating that comedy need not undercut or send up the drama, but that it can be an integral part of it. Taika Waititi was an inspired choice as director, and Hemsworth and Cate Blanchett are tremendous as Thor and Hela, the goddess of death who also happens to be Thor’s half-sister.
