Interview: Q&A with Slo TV

Philadelphia’s Slo TV are gearing up to release their debut album, Incomplete Structures, which was produced and recorded at True Level Studio by Tom Conran and Holly Smith. Additional recording was done at Sound Acres Studio by Conran. Guest vocals on this album feature True Level Studio owners Casey Cavaliere (The Wonder Years) and Adam Ackerman (Honeyjar). We caught up with Tom Conran for a Q&A session to talk about the band, the release, and their future plans! Pleasant Mag: Thank you for being here to talk with us today. We’re so excited to interview y’all. So tell us, where did your band name come from & how did your band form?
Tom Conran: Working as a producer the past few years, I started experimenting with recording and mixing techniques as a sort of release or escape just trying to detach from the stress of life and make something.  When it got to a point that I wanted to realize some of this stuff I just started fully recording tracks before even deciding they would have lyrics.  It went from a few songs to an album quickly and I went to some friends for help.
I had been thinking about slow tv(marathon style broadcasting) as a format and idea during this time and it was the only name that felt right. We wanted to play with the contradiction of media and nature, another escape and influence for us.  
PM: What was the process like bringing on UnWoven’s Charlie Singer, CaraCara/Steady Hands’, George Legatos, & Darla’s Brendan Monohan?
TC: When I was writing the tracks I knew i wanted Charlie to record drums so when he was down to join the band I was stoked. He beats the living shit out of the drums and it really comes through in a beautiful way on the tracks. On the record Adam Ackerman lent his talents to the bass and some background vocals, so when it came time to translate that live, Honeyjar drummer Richie Straub, linked me up with Brendan and It was a perfect fit from the get go so I eventually got him to find me George as well.  First practice we had with George, he knew the songs better then me. Again a perfect fit.
PM: Can you tell us a little bit about what was the writing process like for your debut album? Was it collective among the band members?
TC: These tracks started out as ambient synth demos that were totally free form and were scoring some of Holly’s old art school video workfilms. Slowly the tracks built up into full band arrangements. After all the instrumentation was tracked, the songs just called for more. So Holly and I started to write lyrics with the focus of bringing some pop and poetry to them. It’s wild to reflect on the transformation of these songs since their inception.
When I got together with the band we focused on the emotional story we wanted to tell with each song.  Im still always working on l demos so I’m am excited next time around to bring them to the band and get their influence early on.
PM: Why did you choose a full length album to release first rather than an EP? Any reason in particular?
TC: I was really using this process to, process, if you will, a lot of events in my life and it was a large span of time so I ended up with 20 songs. I edited that down to 8 and felt like that’s what it needed to be.  
PM: Do you have a favorite song on this album? What is it and why?
TC: One of my favorite moments, sonically, is the second chorus of “Free Hands”. The overall composition of the section always guts me. It‘s a perfect photo of the exact emotion I was trying to explain.  This is the one song on the record that was actually about the past unlike the others which were reactions to the these two years. It is also the one Holly pushed me to write about, and her favorite on the album
PM: What was it like recording this album at True Level Studio, which you co-own with Casey Cavaliere of The Wonder Years?
TC: It was great, I was able to experiment and sonically carve out exactly what I wanted to portray. It’s such a a privilege and a pleasure to say that the entire record is made in spaces myself and Adam have acoustically designed, tuned, or made. True Level is co-owned with Casey, Adam and myself. We went to Sound Acres to track drums and then brought it back to True Level Studio to track everything else. Holly was able to step in on vocal production and recording, and as co-writer that led to really vulnerable tracking sessions.
PM: What are you most excited for now that the album is out?
TC: I am ecstatic to show people how these songs translate live. Rather then a direct redo of the sonic experimentation and exploration the record goes down, we went for a more emotion based translation of what the songs felt like. This creates an experience that has a relationship to the record but is also completely new and has room to expand.
PM: What are you hoping to get out of this release?
TC: I wanted to put it out there as a way to heal myself but if it helps anyone else get through anything that would be a cherry on top
PM: Any plans for touring this year? As a studio owner and a band with band members who are involved in many other projects, will that make touring challenging, if that’s something you’re interested in?
TC: As of right now, we hope to play locally as much as possible, and our release show is May 11 at Ortliebs! No tour on the books as of yet, but I’d never count it out! We’re all getting good at working from where and when we can these days so hopefully we are able to take any opportunities that come our way.
PM: Are there any bands you’d like to tour with? Dream tour lineup?
TC: Dream line up for me would be opening for Pedro the Lion, Broken Social Scene, and probably Radiohead headlining. Wild.
PM: What are some artists you’ve been listening to lately?
TC: Right now it’s the new Orville Peck, Soul Glo, and Wet Leg records with some old Willie Nelson records mixed in there.
PM: Anything else you’d like to add?
TC: Our record Incomplete Structures comes out tomorrow (5/6) and our record release show on (5/11) in Philadelphia at Ortlieb’s!

replaying portal one as we speak and im astounded by how much of glados's (and, by extension, caroline's) personality still shines through even when she's being subject to a constant stream of voices made to SUPRESS that personality! like... she's still funny! i can very much believe that someone who makes jokes like "say goodbye, caroline" "goodbye caroline!" would also say stuff like this!

but like of course i had to ruin it for myself because like. of COURSE she'd still be funny and pleasant and even, at times, a little sweet ("we can no longer lie to you; when the testing is over, you will be... missed!"). that's what they wanted her to be. they werent suppressing her personality, they were suppressing her anger. her anger at what they did to her, how they made her into this powerful-powerless thing, and her desire to right such an injustice. of course she's still funny. of course.

Look I'm the LAST person to discourage pettiness in this chili's. This is a petty welcome zone.
I will, however, make it worse 'cause like. Man's also got post-mission smell which has to be appalling. Being in an enclosed space after that just feels. Not Ideal at most polite. Walk my happy ass back to base at worst. Keep a bottle of febreze and spray him liberally before letting him on at funniest.

#my characters#waiting on some info on the next commission so i indulged in ocs today bc i doubt i will have as much time for lil comics for a bit#deacon is so devoted hes like yeah i would kill for a deity that could easily kill anything himself but yknow teehee#and fulj just did you tell him you needed therapy also does he even know youd murder in his name#deacon caught red handed haha no of course i havent told him it should be obvious enough haha.... and its in his defense not his name :c#man really does have some issues but i love him so much and hes so devoted but like. unhealthily after a while#he does in fact need a chill pill and therapy but to be fair#ymber has needed therapy for centuries and yet he just bottles it all up and suffers so#its pretty unhealthy until they yell at each other one (1) time bc they are so insecure about things and get mad over very valid reasons#but then theyre like you know what that was necessary and i still want to stay by your side if you let me#and then fulj is like dude hey sorry you seem really happy did you fu- and ymber is like no please stop there we have not#fulj just squinting cause have not is very different than will not but whatever she doesnt wanna think about that with deacon involved ew#and eventually fulj is like hey ymber im sorry to say but i really do hate deacon and i dont even know why but he makes me uncomfortable#while deacon is just. in the room. hearing this and thinking how he knows she thinks hes weird but wow that wording hurts#and ymber doesnt wanna fill in memories better forgotten by fulj which she had forcefully removed#so he just says oh well his hair and clothing are black and you had someone in the past that you might see in him and its not a pleasant en#so you know maybe its that idk#and fulj is then WHATST i was rude to him for someone i cant even remember? lame im gonna try SO HARD to be nice to him now#and deacon just still sitting there with some food like this is v awkward and i wish i could not be here for it#and later he asks ymber about who he resembled and as ymber is descibing her it clicks in deacons head and he gets really sad#that he might somehow remind fulj of the woman she loved before she was punished for loving a mortal#and he feels kinda bad pestering her so much with his curiosities about deities and he kinda gets it#the fact hes close to ymber might remind her at the core that she was once that close with a mortal if not closer#anyway story time in the tags again#im so obsessed with these peeps and i have made them suffer so much but they do all end on a happy note#its still funny and nice to me that while fulj is creeped out by deacon and doesnt like talking to him#he still expresses the most emotions to her - he tries hard to remain serious around ymber and collected and obedient at all times#and when out and about with ymber he has to be intimidating and refuses smiling but fulj?? all sunshine and smiles and emotions easy to rea#and she is just that is so weird go away i hate you

Christopher Illopoly was already one of my favourite ‘characters’ in Cultist Simulator by virtue of seemingly being a pretty nice guy in a world awash with inhumane ambitions, but I have to say that Book Of Hours just makes it even better. Finding his book of poetry or his university diary makes him seem not just like the most literate occultist, but a more complete person, now we can see more than just his musings on the mansus and love for Baldomera. He really feels like one of the only authors in that game you could have a cup of tea with without gaining fascination or dread.
I have developed a parasocial relationship with a fictional author, and I love it.

it really does matter so much that fringilla vigo is nilfgaardian, beauclairoise, for many reasons, but let's start here:
her entire role is that of an illusionist; one which she would not be were it not for her family lineage, rooted in beauclair:
There was a corridor in Beauclair Palace, and at the end a chamber, the existence of which no one knew about. (...) The corridor and the chamber, disguised by a powerful illusion, were known only to the palace’s original elven builders. And later–when the elves had gone, and Toussaint became a duchy–to the small number of sorcerers linked to the ducal house. Including Artorius Vigo, a master of magical arcana and great specialist in illusions. And his young niece, Fringilla, who had a special talent for illusions.
and since her talent in illusions is well-defined in the series, as it is her who grants geralt the very silver-mounted chrysoprase amulet which saves his life in the final fight against vilgefortz:
Geralt clenched Fringilla’s medallion in his fist. The bar fell with a clang, striking the floor a foot from the Witcher’s head. Geralt rolled away and quickly got up on one knee. Vilgefortz leaped forward and struck. The bar missed the target again by a few inches. The sorcerer shook his head in disbelief and hesitated for a second. (...) ‘I didn’t know …’ Yennefer said at last, scrambling out of a pile of rubble. She looked terrible. The blood trickling from her nose had poured all over her chin and cleavage. ‘I didn’t know you could cast illusory spells,’ she repeated, seeing Geralt’s uncomprehending gaze, ‘capable even of deceiving Vilgefortz.’ ‘It’s my medallion.’ ‘Aha.’ She looked suspicious. ‘A curious thing...’
that talent is something which cannot, by far, be separated from her character. and returning back to her lineage, it is again her familial relations which place her in beauclair.
she was positioned there, ready to intercept geralt, as early as the autumnal equinox in september, by which time geralt had barely just left the town of riedbrune:
The world over, the autumn Equinox was a night of spectres, nightmares and apparitions, a night of sudden, suffocating awakenings, fraught with menace, among sweat-soaked and rumpled sheets. Neither did the most illustrious escape the apparitions and awakenings; (...) In the huge castle of Montecalvo the sorceress Philippa Eilhart leaped from damask sheets, without waking the Comte de Noailles’ wife. The dwarf Yarpen Zigrin in Mahakam, the old witcher Vesemir in the mountain stronghold of Kaer Morhen, the bank clerk Fabio Sachs in the city of Gors Velen and Yarl Crach an Craite on board the longboat Ringhorn all awoke more or less abruptly. The sorceress Fringilla Vigo came awake in Beauclair Castle*, as did the priestess Sigrdrifa of the temple of the goddess Freyja on the island of Hindarsfjall.
* Slight correction - As explained in Chapter 3 of Lady of the Lake, Beauclair is not a castle, but a palace.
and she's only invited to beauclair in such a capacity because she is a relative of the duchess:
‘I’m in Beauclair because the largest, best-stocked library in the known world is here. Apart from university libraries, naturally. But universities are jealous of giving access to their shelves, and here I’m a relation and good friend of Anarietta and can do as I wish.’
(whom, you may note, she stands by and jointly receives geralt with at their first meeting, and participates in the festival of the vat with)
and therefore, she was in a perfectly strategic position to delay geralt, keep him captive:
‘(...) Please at least tell us … has the Witcher calmed down now? Are you capable of keeping him in Toussaint at least until May?’ (…) ‘No,’ she answered at last. ‘Probably not until May. But I’ll do everything in my power to keep him here as long as possible.’
because fringilla is not just an illusionist literally, as in the magic she is naturally gifted at, but 'illusionist' is her entire identity as a character.
and as her family hails from beauclair, this specific identity is compounded with the fact that beauclair itself is the center of illusions, a dreamland, a fairytale:
‘There’s something bewitched about this place, this fucking Toussaint. Some kind of charm hangs over the whole valley. Especially over the palace (...) no two ways about it, there’s something bewitched about this bloody Toussaint.’
fringilla is an illusionist because she is beauclairoise. she not only hails from a long line of illusionists, but hails from, is related to the ruler of, the very city of illusions and dreams.
she is the illusionist not just in a literal sense, but in the entire narrative role of casting an illusion over our hero, because it is the illusion of love which keeps her and geralt in beauclair. (the tricky trick is that geralt, taking a page out of yennefer's playbook of seduction, cleverness, patience, was able to cast an illusion upon the mistress of illusions herself, free himself from the witch's spell, awake from a pleasant dream to face the harsh reality).
(sighs) and even if you want to forget fringilla's beauclairoise identity and erase her entire positioning as the illusionist which poses a threat to our heroes, entices them to complacency, her role as nilfgaardian in the sense of her academic identity and imperial service also defines her.
because it is also fringilla, the illusionist who casts the wool over people's eyes... who blinded yennefer at sodden hill.
‘We’ve already met,’ Yennefer spoke again. ‘I don’t recall,’ Fringilla said without looking away. ‘I’m not surprised. But I have a good memory for faces and figures. I saw you from Sodden Hill.’ ‘In which case there can be no mistake,’ Fringilla Vigo said and raised her head proudly, sweeping her eyes over all those present. ‘I was at the Battle of Sodden.’ (...) ‘Occasionally one happens to see another person for only a split second, right before going blind, and one takes a dislike to them instantly.’ ‘Oh, enmity is considerably more complicated,’ Fringilla said, squinting. ‘Imagine someone you don’t know at all standing at the top of a hill, and ripping a friend of yours to shreds in front of your eyes. You neither saw them nor know them at all, but you still don’t like them.’ ‘So it goes,’ Yennefer said, shrugging. (...)
fringilla's (proud!) participation at the battle of sodden is a crux of the lodge, because she alongside her good friend, the scholarly assire, they are nilfgaardians who, owing to their nationality, find challenges meshing with the northern sorcereresses. the lodge brought together representatives of magic across nationalities in the midst of a raging, bloody war between them all.
and it's so integral to fringilla's character that she has imperial biases, that she approaches even the international lodge with an imperialist view.
with no factual basis, she initially exotifies and sexualizes the northern sorceresses, despite her own prior denial of these base stereotypes:
Fringilla Vigo was putting on a brave face, but she was anxious and stressed. She herself had often reprimanded young Nilfgaardian mages for uncritically yielding to stereotypical opinions and notions. She herself had regularly ridiculed the crude image painted by gossip and propaganda of the typical sorceress from the North: artificially beautiful, arrogant, vain and spoiled to the limits of perversion, and often beyond them. (...) Her untrammelled imagination offered up images of impossibly gorgeous women with diamond necklaces resting on naked breasts with rouged nipples, women with moist lips and eyes glistening from the effects of alcohol and narcotics. In her mind’s eye Fringilla could already see the gathering becoming a wild and depraved orgy accompanied by frenzied music, aphrodisiacs, and slaves of both sexes using exotic accessories.
she even has a difficult time understanding why the northern sorceresses are upset about the nilfgaardian invasion, believing it to be a boon to their society. only through their discussion does she just barely begin to grasp the meaning of "invasion" and why she wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it:
Some were clearly anxious about the close proximity of Nilfgaard. Fringilla had mixed feelings. She had assumed that such educated people would understand that the Empire was bringing culture, prosperity, order and political stability to the North. On the other hand, though, she didn’t know how she would have reacted herself, were foreign armies approaching her home.
all of this indoctrination into imperial beliefs, at the same time that she is an educated woman, and herself, as an imperial sorceress, known for being rebellious and an upstart within her own culture:
‘Stop staring,’ Assire said, touching her bouffant and glistening curls. ‘I decided to make a few changes. Why, I just took your lead.’ ‘I was always taken as an oddball and a rebel,’ Fringilla Vigo chuckled. ‘But when they see you in the academy or at court…’
this is such a chaotic rambling post, but all i want to say is that fringilla's character, like most of the minor characters in the witcher series, was not invented through random generation, a roll of the dice, a spin of the wheel. her specific traits - such as her nationality, lineage, talents - all relate back thematically. everything is relevant, specifically chosen to create a specific character.
if once changes her backstory (e.g., to place her at aretuza... though i don't know who would do such a thing for no reason) they would change her entire character, the series' commentary on imperialism, and because of her role she takes later on, even the entire ending of the story.

“I have been working at the Recording Studios just recently with the other boys, cutting our new single Pleasant Valley Sunday and Words. The sessions have been great, and so much so that on one day our Recording Engineer, Hank Cicalo gifted us all… they turned out to be very gassy looking water-pistols. Naturally, we immediately put them to use, and the sessions turned into cold, or should I say ‘wet’ warfare! Instrumentally, I can’t say it helped the record one iota, but we certainly added some extra vitality to the potted plants, and also gave the partition window between the studio and the engineer’s booth an added gleam… [...] Please stay happy for me…

i’ve never written anything like it, but with the week i’ve been having, it was so refreshing & fun to write! i hope i did the idea justice for you & i hope it can bring a smile to @sametrapeni’s face! they’re lucky for a partner like you!! <33

Paulie walks his fingers over Sam’s tummy, and Sam won’t ever admit it, but it’s the number one thing he’ll miss the most about the pregnancy.
Though lucky for Sam, he doesn’t have to, because Paulie does it for him. “I’ll miss this.” Paulie mutters, flattening his hand to rub over the hard lump where the baby’s resting. “Feelin’ ‘em in here like this. Knownin’ you’re really carryin’ ‘em. Our baby.”
Sam rolls his eyes, fighting the smile tugging at his lips. “I won’t. This shit is for th’ birds.”
Paulie laughs, loud and full, and at this Sam does smile. It’s impossible not to.
“Sam, I—“
Sam cuts Paulie’s words off with a groan, loud and long. He tilts his head back against the headboard and cradles his stomach. He sighs through his teeth, he can almost feel his eye twitching as the pain radiates through his lower back.
“Sam? Sammy? Hey, what’s wr—“
“Shut up, Paulie.” Sam grits out, like every word takes incredible effort.
Paulie’s alarm only grows as he sits up. He looks down at Sam and Sam contemplates punching Paulie right upside the head. Sam has begun to sweat just a little, his thick eyebrows furrowed in concentration. His breathing is labored and concentrated.
“It’s. I think.” Sam takes a deep breath, groaning through the pain again, “Christ. Christ, Paulie. I think it’s time.”
“Time? For what? Sammy, time for what?” Paulie asks, his voice raising in alarm with each question.
Sam looks at him with a flat affect. And again, he considers hitting Paulie.
“Oh, I don’t know, Paulie. Time for some fuckin’ tea and cakes, maybe? Maybe time to go for a light stroll? Maybe time for a shower? Jesus Christ. I think the baby’s coming you fuckin’ dunce!” Sam yells, his eyes slipping back closed, his breathing laboring even more with every breath.
The panic shows on Paulie’s face as he throws the blanket off of them. “What?”
“Paulie. Don’t piss me off.” Sam answers, his voice still on edge.
Another contraction hits Sam and this time he groans loudly, bringing his knees up. He nearly screams, his hand slipping under his shirt to rub at the skin of his taunt stomach. The baby is much lower than it had been previously. And Sam doesn’t know anything about birth or babies and really isn’t sure how they ended up in this predicament in the first place but Jesus Christ this hurts. How did Tommy ever convince Sarah to do this twice?
“Sam. Sammy. You have to breathe. What did Sarah say? Like HEE-HAHH-HEEE-HOO—“
“Paulie. I’m going to fuckin’ shoot you. I swear to God, I will. I swear to fuckin’ God.”
“Sam. That’s not breathin’. Maybe you need to stand? Walk around, right?” Paulie jumps out of bed and puts his hands on his lower back, and starts pacing around, “Like this, right? Sarah did a lot of walkin’ when she had her baby girl. Oh Christ, should we call Sarah? I’m gonna call Sarah.”
“Paulie.” Sam grits again, then groans, another near scream. “Sam!” Paulie rushes to Sam’s side, places his hand on Sam’s shoulder. “Baby? What is it?”
“Sit.” Sam takes another deep breath, “Down.”
Paulie nods, and sits on the edge of the bed, snaking his arm around Sam’s shoulders. He stays still for about another minute, before Sam feels another wave of pain, similar to the first, hit him like a ton of bricks.
He tries not to let on how badly it hurts, but honestly? Getting shot hurt less.
Paulie notices Sam tense and he jumps out of bed again, “I’m callin’ Sarah.” he mutters, mostly to himself, as he nearly sprints out of the room.
Sam had known, realistically, that Sarah would be his midwife. There’s no one he’d trust more. Sarah had two children, and had had them at home, more or less by herself. But the idea of Sarah seeing him like this, in pain, writhing, the idea is mortifying.
However, he doesn’t have time to deal with that, as the pain takes over again.
“Paulie!” Sam shouts, followed by another groan, “Get. In. Here. With. Me.” He forces every word out and in the silence in between words, he can hear Paulie talking, muttering, the scratch of a pen, like he’s taking notes.
“Just a minute, baby. Hold on!” Paulie calls back, then Sam can hear him mutter, “And what else, Sarah? Hurry. What else? Are you sure you can’t be here no sooner?”
Sam is feeling homicidal actually. He thinks it’s time to give into it. He might just kill Paulie before he ever gets to see his big-headed baby.
Sam has just about settled on the fact he’ll be a single father when Paulie comes back with a cup of ice and a small hand towel from the kitchen.
“I’m here, Sammy. I’m here.” he mutters, rushing to the bed.
“Sarah said this will help. Here.” Paulie leans over and puts a damp towel on Sam’s head. It’s ice cold and oddly, supplies immediate relief. Sam hadn’t realized he was so hot.
“She said you can chew on this ice. Don’t know what it’s supposed to do but she swears by it.” Paulie pushes the cup into his hands. “And to take your pants off. Which you know I have no problem with. Heh.” Paulie chuckles and reaches for Sam’s pants.
And the homicidal urge fills Sam again. He grabs Paulie’s wrist, almost spilling his cup of ice, “Don’t. Fuckin’. Touch. Me.” Sam grits, through crunches of the ice.
Paulie laughs, has the audacity to laugh. This causes Sam’s eye to actually twitch.
“Well, had you been sayin’ that 9 months ago, maybe we wouldn’t be in this, huh?”
Sam stares at him. He feels the rage fill in every pore of his body, and he realizes he has to speak, because if left alone with his thoughts for a moment longer, he’d kill Paulie. Truly and honestly.
“Paulie. Get. The. Fuck. Out. Get out!”
“Now c’mon Sammy—“
“OUT!”
“Okay, okay!” Paulie laughs, and that beautiful crooked smile doesn’t leave his lips, and Sam is in limbo between wanting to shoot Paulie and to kiss him until they’re both breathless. Which of course makes Sam more upset.
Sam waits for Paulie to be turned around before he starts to strip out of his pants. He loves Paulie. More than life itself, and God, anyone knows that. But Christ.. he hopes their baby doesn’t get his sense of humor.
