very into the Murdaugh family media frenzy not just because it appeals to my southern belle “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia” vibe but because of Stephen Smith
Stephen Smith
Stephen Smith!!!!
there is so much being said about a bunch a privileged white rednecks and I want to talk about the child whose life was cut short by what was almost undoubtedly a hate crime. I wanna talk about how us southern queers are far from safe, regardless of what our barely-tolerant family would pretend when they ask us to quiet down. I want to see justice served for the gay kid living in the boonies who dared to be himself and lost his life because of that, because of homophobia.
I want to talk about Stephen Smith!!!

Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal
I did not see the video until Dec 18th during the murdaugh murders season 2 that Paul had last taken the moment before his death. He testified from beyond the grave with his phone pointing at his murderer who's voice was caught.
I recognized his voice after rewinding it to see why everyone became silent. All the chances that a not-guilty verdict or a mistrial was obliterated. Vaporized. Disintegrated. Turned into nothingness. They literally watched a man get convicted before their very eyes. The events transpired in their minds what happened after the video was taken.
I will admit, I was somewhat paying attention so i had to go back and catch what was said.
My god, the crocodile tears were telling but testifying immediately AFTER that video???? What kind of---what was he thinking? That by explaining it away he would get away with it?
He's a lousy liar who got away with so much because of help in the past.
He's like a character from a television show who's taken into real life and thinks he's still untouchable even when everything falls apart on him.
If he had shed tears, been a far better liar, and shown some survivor guilt, not have to deal with a dog, not have to deal with his son taking a snapchat video, perhaps he would have gotten away with it.
Instead, he lied his way to a jail cell for the rest of his natural life after being convicted by a jury and the entire world.
I will however note the series is rather good at delivering the facts of the evidence and what had transpired. I will, however, note, it is unfortunate that they didn't include the defense argument against Alex firing the gun and the prosecutor's classic rebuttal.

That trial is a mess: the police job has been sloppy, the judge is out of patience, the prosecution is unfocused, the lawyers are bickering with the judge…
My opinion right now is he either killed his wife and son or he knows who did it. But more on the latter: that Alec/Alex? Murdaugh is a clear sociopath but not to the point of murder imo.

my personal theory based on nothing but my own theorizing, after watching the murdaugh murders show on netflix please share your thoughts if you also watched it
spoilers and cw for murder + gun violence
i think things got crazy with the family that night - we know paul was volatile and out of control, and that he liked to play with guns. we also know alex was on a knife's edge that day after the walls starting to close in on his financial crimes and his dad being in poor health.
we also know that the mom was killed with the weird fancy rifle and paul was killed with a shotgun. the mom was killed running away and paul was shot right in the front. i think conflict erupted over all the crazy shit that was already going down within the family. i think things escalated extremely fast given all the other variables in play.
i think paul took the cool rifle to threaten or shoot his mother with, and alex grabbed the shotgun to try and defend his wife/stop paul/get vaguely involved cause he was hella fucked up. i think paul shot maggie and then alex shot paul, and then alex panicked and tried to stage it like some rando had shot both people because he's used to being able to shut down and control narratives like that.

So the last two days the prosecution showed Alex Murdaugh is low-life thief but not that he is the murderer.
The prosecution is meandering.
