cutting it soo close to the wire oopsie but i'm here!! 2023 is out, 2024 is in. also in: your december reading update? did you hit 50 books read? what are your 2024 reading goals, anything that suprised you about your 2023 reading other than falling in love with Dennis Cooper?
I read 12 books last month man it was a blur!!
Tumblr media
ok there's just too many for me to indulge in any rambling so I'm gonna try and keep things short n sweet
Nana Vol. 1-3 by Ai Yazawa - I was never really into manga growing up but this is like exactly the type of story and style I wanna wrap myself up in always!! so much fun!! the rumors are true, I love a roommate story!!! I read each one in a single sitting so I wanna pace myself thru the rest of the series so that I don't spoil + finish it all at once </3
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury - honestly not as fantastical as I was expecting for some reason but it reminded me of Coraline which was fun! I could see Neil Gaiman getting inspo from this (edit: literally just looked it up and yes Gaiman indeed cites him as a direct influence yup yup)
Out of Time by Samira Azzam - something almost Steinbeck-like in these vignettes of everyday life in a very culturally-specific way that I really enjoy. really insightful introduction that mentioned how although most her stories didn't explicitly mention Palestine, they still were recognizable as a Palestinian existence + therefore shaped a sort of Palestinian consciousness for readers that were often blocked from accessing their own culture in academic settings
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison - I can't believe it took me this long to read something by Toni Morrison / that I never read her in any English classes?? like she seems so foundational to the grand scheme of American literature.... ridiculous! so phenomenal and gripping and darker than I expected. not just an engrossing story but also a really intentional and haunting use of language that really sinks you into that world/shifting perspectives
Tasting the Sky: A Palestinian Childhood by Ibtisam Barakat - this is like the only Palestinian book my local library has (shameful!) so I checked it out on a whim and was so surprised at what an amazing memoir this is!!! touching and vibrant and left me so eager to read her follow-up memoir based around her teenage years. I feel like this is a great introduction to Palestinian literature in general bc while it does (obviously) tie in the history and reality of occupation, the amount of love & detail given to the everyday things - merely going to school or playing with her brothers - was so enlightening and relatable
Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris - the first/main story, SantaLand Diaries, is still one of my favorites - I love stories about odd jobs + boy does Sedaris have so many tales to tell about those!! reread this in one sitting before I sent it off to a friend who seems to find herself in a new odd job each year so I figured she'd resonate
Gaza in Crisis and On Palestine by Noam Chomsky & Ilan Pappé, edited by Frank Barat - 2 separate books but I'll talk about them together since they're companion pieces. surprisingly accessible, probably due to the format of essays mixed with interviews. On Palestine echoed a lot of the sentiments of Gaza in Crisis so I'd recommend On Palestine for a sort of "updated" version (and in my opinion, more thorough). a good stepping stone for some of the meatier/more history-dense books on my TBR
Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel - yknow the thing about recipe bloggers who will intersperse their super personal life story into the recipe? this is like a whole book of that it's kinda iconic... honestly a little juvenile and ridiculous at times but I had a fun + have made hot chocolate every single day since reading this which literally wasn't even one of the recipes included/the title itself comes from like 1 short part towards the end but still... Ms. Esquivel's impact... the movie adaptation was really well done too, captured the magical realism surprisingly well without making things look hokey + Man I just love food in film!!!
Good Sense & the Faithless by Michelle T. Clinton - beautiful sexy thoughtful angry hopeful healing.... I really love her and I'm glad I ended the year with this!!
YES I surpassed by goal which honestly did surprise me bc if you recall I sliced my 50 down to 36 a few months ago because 50 didn't seem feasible at the time, but I guess the lesson is to never underestimate winter reading!! still I'm playing it safe and declaring 40 as my 2024 goal... for now.... a few weeks ago I made a little reading syllabus for the year where each month is a different theme (except for january + august to give myself some time to get the wiggles/impulsive reads out ya know) and I mostly sourced from books I already own or books in my TBR so I'm really excited to have more structure to my reads + actually get through some of the books in my ever-growing TBR!! shameful and embarrassing that it's nearly at 1k books like GOD just READ them, woman!!! I think I'm also surprised at how many graphic novel collections I read (3!) which maybe shouldn't be that surprising bc I always have a good time with graphic novels but I think these particular reads opened the door to a buncha different authors and artists and literary circles which ofc I'm always grateful for! yay reading!!

#NowPop40
Over on my mastodon feed, there’s a daily pop music challenge.
This month is #Popiversary2, for which I’m posting chilled-out songs for a hot summer. (check weather) Never mind.
Last month was #NowPop40, forty songs taken from the .gb Now! That’s What I Call Music series - from 1983 to the present day.
The whole thing is organised by Arron, a lovely chap; for historic reasons, it’s still done through far-right blitheration Twitter.
And because their siteowner Elon Muskrat is a cis pervert who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing, the #NowPop40 winning thread is hidden behind a login wall so that nobody can see it.
... except it's not, because someone's slapped it up on my Tumblr.
#NOWPOP40
Hello, and thanks to all 32 of you who posted tracks every day.
1,523 picks altogether, with the median finishing on NOW 47 (2000 Q4).
And these are THE RESULTS.
Ties were settled by avoiding repeat artists and giving credit to artists with other tracks that were chosen but didn't win.
Also, by length, as I wanted to make each volume no longer than 4min per track average.
My casting vote was a last resort. So here goes...
Winners (x = votes by winning song, C = Clear, T - Tied, * = I picked it, y = votes by comp )
NOW 1: The Safety Dance 3C/17 NOW 2: Modern Love 2T/14 (shortest tied track) NOW 3: Time After Time 3C/19 NOW 4: Together In Electric Dreams 3C/11 NOW 5: Walking On Sunshine 3T/23 (shortest, and neat segue into...) NOW 6: Running Up That Hill 5C/19 NOW 7: I Can't Wait 3C/24 (highest-voted comp; shortest tied track) NOW 8: Breakout 3T/18 (shortest, avoided repeating Kate Bush) NOW 9: Land of Confusion 3C/16 NOW 10: Alone 2T/15 (replaced M/A/R/R/S to come in at 160 minutes) NOW 11: Mandinka 3T/18 NOW 12: Push It 3C/16 NOW 13: A Little Respect 4C/15 NOW 14: Buffalo Stance 6C/17 NOW 15: Back To Life 3C/16 NOW 16 (as you know): SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE 8C/18 (top voted track) NOW 17: Enjoy The Silence 4T/20 (tied with Loaded, I didn't give Loaded the casting vote as I have a lot of winning picks on Vol 2 and I much prefer the 7-min version) NOW 18: There She Goes 4C/19 NOW 19: 3AM Eternal 4C/16 NOW 20: Set Adrift On Memory Bliss 5C/18 21 Weather With You 3C/14 22 Something Good 3T/19 (shorter) 23 Sleeping Satellite 4C/15 24 Constant Craving 3T/17 (preferred to a cover) 25 Sunflower 5C/16 26 Laid 2T/20 - A 7-WAY TIE on 2 here, I replaced Play Dead with this to come in at 160 minutes. 27 Disarm 3T/17 28 Girls And Boys 4C/13 29 Stay (I Missed You) 2T/16 (tied artists have other winning songs) 30 Glory Box 4C/17 31 Common People 6C/14 (not edited, I have my limits😁) 32 Missing - Todd Terry remix 4C/18 33 He's On The Phone 3C/13 34 Born Slippy 3C/16 35 Pearl's Girl was 3C/14 winner but is too long and didn't want consecutive tracks by same artist so it went to runner-up The Riverboat Song. 36 Virtual Insanity 3T/19 (tied artists have winners on Vol 2) 37 Bitter Sweet Symphony 3C/16 38 Karma Police 3C/14 39 Torn 5C/16 40 Teardrop 5C/15 - the absence of an edit is what forced me to make the two changes on NOWs 10 & 26
And here is #NOWPOP40 VOLUME 1! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68FKsOVUNfmMNlXsHevldz

And here is #NOWPOP40 VOLUME 2 (unsurprisingly my favourite of the three)! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4O1Zb7GhowFSOfM9G6fDuc
81 Titanium 3C/12 82 Call Me Maybe 5C/10 83 We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together 5C/12 84 Just Give Me A Reason 2T/13 (Bruno and Sam are on other winners, Pink isn't but has more votes for other tracks) 85 Get Lucky 3C*/15 86 Do I Wanna Know? 2T/11 (tied artists i.e. Lorde & Lana have other winners) 87 Thank You 2T/9 (hip-hop posse cuts sorely lacking before now!) 88 Chandelier 2T*/9 89 Boom Clap 3T*/10 90 Uptown Funk 8C*/9 (LOL, tied with STSOL just a few hours ago) 91 Black Magic 3C*/8 92 Can't Feel My Face 4C*/10 93 Lush Life 2T/8 94 Into You 3C*/9 95 Tilted 5C*/8 96 Green Light 3T*/10 97 Bad Liar 2C*/9 (the only '2C' I think) 98 New Rules 3C/11 99 Blinded By Your Grace Pt 2 2T*/8 (tie with Dua = win!) 100 2002 2T/8 (Ariana has 94, so loses☹️) 101 Sucker Punch 3C/8 102 Nothing Breaks Like A Heart 3C*/9 103 bad guy 5C*/10 104 Summer Girl 3T/9 (Lizzo has another winner) 105 Blinding Lights 4C/11 106 weird! 3C/11 107 Levitating 3C*/10 108 Midnight Sky 3T/10 (tied with Olivia, didn't want consecutive tracks) 109 good 4 u 6C*/13 110 Cold Heart (Pnau remix) 3T/13 Irreconcilable criteria here: a tie between two artists who already have two clear wins each, and no other song on 110 has > 1 vote. I gave it to Elton :) 111 House On Fire 2T/9 (shorter, flowed better) It's (112) About Damn Time (5C*/10)
this (113) Unholy (2C/10...ah, there was another '2C')
challenge was (114) Over (3C/12)

The Complete Anya Corazón Reading Order
Tumblr media
Been planning to do this for a while, but the announcement of a movie potentially in production, better have this ready for new comers!
So Anya Corazón, she first started under the name Araña, debuting in Amazing Fantasy in 2004, before starring in her own ongoing Araña: The Heart of the Spider. By 2010 she changed her name to Spider-Girl, which seems the name they’re going with for the potential movie. I’ll keep updating this list whenever is necessary.
Anyway, here’s the reading order!
Tumblr media
The Araña Era
Tumblr media
Amazing Fantasy vol 2 (2004) #1-6

Amazing Spider-Man vol 3 #9-15
Spider-Verse Team-Up #3
Web Warriors #1-11 (Um, I actually do not recommend reading these, it’s probably the worst series featuring her and Anya gets seemingly retconned out of the team by Spider-Geddon anyway, so um, read at your own risk)

Spider-Geddon #5 (is a conclusion to Spider-Girls)
Amazing Spider-Man: Last Remains:

I always feel envious when I see someone have a clear niche in what they like and feel like I don’t but then I remember i dont care about genres and also I’m obsessed with the 1-volume and omnibus format so if you’re looking for short impactful manga that are also non-commitments I know a few 😳  I also had a lot of breakthroughs irt my Japanese learning so I was able to read a lot of manga in japanese and met my goal of finishing 50% of the jpn manga I’ve stockpiled!!! so the ultimate goal for 2021 would be to actually catch up completely, but honestly there’s no rush either. For this year these were my favorite (1-volume) japanese manga I read! Will keep the commentary short for some of these for the sake of length
(Crash), Erica Sakurasawa. I usually try not to go for the easy route of describing something by comparing it to something else but “its like Helter Skelter but its about male models and a milder mental breakdown, actually its not like Helter Skelter at all” is the quickest way to describe it. absolutely made me more interested in diving deeper into Sakurasawa’s bibliography
(Hagoromi Mishin), Yuki Kodama talked a bit about it on my romance list. I really hope i manage to make some time for at least one of Kodama’s longer serials because after this especially i was really sold on her
(Shiro ga Ite), Keiko Nishi. One of the most surprising reads of the year, with the titular cat on the cover I was expecting the usual cat and his family fare but its like all a story of the deterioration of the middle class family ideals and the futility of striving for it, with the cat in the role as a clever literary device like I literally was not expecting to be so impacted by this
(Houseki bako), Yuki Kodama not much more to add on! This selection of stories was definitely one of my favorite one shot collections this year!
Flowers Anthology: vol. (Koi Monogatari) bundling all these together as they’re in an anthology series. All of them containing different authors like Yumi Tamura, Keiko Nishi, Est Em, Yoko Nemu and more! I can’t even pick a favorite as they all each had great selections of authors and stories so anyone looking for a sampler of shoujo and josei authors should try any one of these volumes
(Majo to Neko no Hanashi), Shino Shinomiya beautiful collection of little coming of age stories about young witches and the cat familiars they summon at age 13. Thank u Zeke for recommending it to me 🥺
(Hikidashi ni Terrarium), Ryoko Kui. A collection of random short stories by ms Ryoko Kui of Dunmesh fame. All with her signature effortless humor and ability to play with genre and concepts. This was actually difficult to read like language-wise but I stuck with it and her visual style and humor is just so genius it didn’t matter that i struggled a bit with the dialogue I will never get tired of her
(Tokimachi Apartment), Yayoi Ogawa. A collection of stories about different characters and their encounters and meetings in a purgatory like place called the Tokimachi Apartment.
(Chihuahua-chan), Kyoko Okazaki. By far I think this is Okazaki’s best short story collection mostly because she was able to hold back a bit on the uber edginess and irreverence focusing a bit more on the fast living but apathetic youth she loved to depict.
LOVE MY LIFE, Yamaji Ebine. I had this on my list of lesbian manga so not much more to aside from the fact that im so happy i finally read it!
(Kabocha no Bouken), Daisuke Igarashi. A fun and beautiful little autobiographical story about an adventurous cat and life on the Japanese countryside

Letter regarding NOEC funding
Dear board of directors,
I am reaching out in regards to the NOEC (Nonquon Outdoor Education Centre) in Port Perry, Ontario being shut down due to insufficient funding. Since you are likely aware of the benefits to children that programs like the NOEC brings, I will not be trying to highlight the amazing benefits these programs have towards improving self-esteem, reducing anxiety, and more (Beck et al., 2018).
Insufficient funding is a reasonable cause for closure for any organization if there is not enough return on investment. However, we must be nuanced and understand that just because something is not directly measured, it does not mean it is not providing a return on investment. I’m here to argue today that the NOEC is more than providing enough financial benefit towards the entire Durham region.
The first way is through reducing clean up costs of municipalities in the region. In a study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, interpretive brochures reduced littering during camping by 50% (Cantrell, 1987). Wagstaff and Wilson (1988) also documented that verbal appeals and role modeling resulted in less litter from river recreationists. We cannot possibly measure the direct impact that the NOEC is having on reducing litter impacts, but that doesn’t mean it’s not having a massive impact. The difference in clean up costs by cities vary wildly and it’s because different cities have different priorities. For example, the City of Vancouver is actually increasing their funding for anti-littering education programs according to their recent budget plan (City of Vancouver, 2018). By maintaining funding to the NOEC and similar programs, municipalities in the Durham region can actually save on their budget by spending less of their budgets on maintenance. Let’s not get to the point of a city like San Francisco who spent around $60 million in 2019 on street cleanup before realizing this (Bendix, 2018).
The other way the NOEC is providing enough return on investment is through its role in tourism. Many visitors to Port Perry come primarily for the outdoor programs that are offered because these programs are not available in nearby urban areas. Therefore, we must not look at the immediate direct monetary income from the programs themselves, but also be mindful that these visitors spend multiple days as tourists in Port Perry. These visitors bring income to all the businesses that Port Perry has to offer including hotels, restaurants, liquor, parking, and more. This fact is well documented in interpretive fields (Beck et al., 2018). By closing down the NOEC and similar programs, many businesses in the area will suffer. This will ultimately make Port Perry less of a business hotspot, making the municipality less income through tax collection.
I strongly urge you to reconsider the impacts that shutting down the NOEC will have on Port Perry and the entire Durham region. The financial upside to the NOEC may not be directly obvious, but it is there. Perhaps an alternative route to take is to formulate a strategy to track the income that the NOEC brings to Port Perry indirectly before making the decision to cut funding. As of right now, funding for the NOEC needs to stay, otherwise there may be much greater financial penalties to pay.
With warm regards,
Mo

6 3/4
1 3/4
Very fine morning and Reaumur 10 1/2º at 6 3/4 a.m. the German woman came with butter A[Ann] wrong again because I took one instead of half a pound      surely I shall now stick to my purpose and get rid of her some way or other as well as I can
At 10 came Hoffman for 1/2 the money in advance for the carriage doing yet he has been since Wednesday morning and done nothing at it! I would give him the money if he would give me security for having it done as he promised I said on Tuesday but it was agreed to be done on Monday evening – No! He had taken 2 Calêches to do, and the Kibitka was to be ready next Tuesday week! No! said I, I must be auge or demidieu not to be out of patience with this – Tell the man I wish him good morning – And I sent George with compliments to Mr. Chwostoff to ask him to be so good as say when he could come –
I should go out today at 1 1/2 for a couple of hours except this had no engagement – George can literally do nothing i.e. get nothing done for us – What can be the reason of it? I cannot comprehend the man he is Russian – It is not that he cannot explain what is wanted – Had George in soon afterwards about what to do with Domna – Mentioned her going to Mr. Besoc’s – Longish talk – George went to her, and brought word back that she should not like to be at Mr. B-s[Besoc’s] all the people being Georgians – What would she like? To be at the house of a Marchand here whose wife had been to visit her – Said I had nothing to say against her objection to Mr. Besoc’s – Would consult Mr. Chwostoff tonight – George to inquire into the volonté of Domná and if her volonté and mine agreed, the matter would be easy – If not, I would arrange some other way – But if she returned I saw no way but his going with her – A-[Ann] and I sat talking things over she mending gloves &c. at my elbow, I drinking raisin tea and eating the raisins being thirsty – Then wrote the last 8 lines till now 1 5/’’ –
At 1 1/2 Hajie Yoosoof came and brought a youth with him – At the moment Madame and Mademoiselle Golovin were announced sent off Hajie and received the ladies who sat some time very civil Mr. Stadler soon came and sat more than 1/2 the time they were here, and after they went took him with us to the Gymnase for Hajie returned for us soon after 2 –
Large handsome building 60 élèves du Gouvernement – Building 50,000/- and 3,000/- (en argent) per annum allowed in the Directeur and Master of the School only arrived about a month ago from St. P-[Petersburg] the latter had been 3 years at St. P-[Petersburg] a student before that at Charkoff –
Tumblr media
The Tiflis Gymmase. (Image Source)
He shewed us his translation into Russian of Romeo and Juliet, and his Baudry-Paris Edition of Shakspeare[Shakespeare] in 2 volumes large 8vo.[octavo] – Good clear print – The edition corrected by Chalmers – Well-informed gentlemanly man – Turned to Macbeth – The beginning – Aroint thee witch – The glossary explained it – Avaunt – Begone – Mentioned the conjecture of a learned Scotsman (Dr. Hunter ages ago to my Aunt Anne) – That aroint thee should probably be a rowan tree, witch – i.e. the rowan tree or mountain ash was a spell against witchcraft – Or it might mean, that the shaft of the besom on which witches rode was generally of rowan tree, and that the witch should betake herself to it and begone – But now on writing this (at 10 55/’’ p.m.) it seems to me that the conjecture was that rowan tree witch, meant, there is, or I have, or beware of, a rowantree, or spell against thy powers, and will have nothing to say to thee –
The rooms of the Gymnase large lofty and good – And the master’s apartment very nice and comfortable – Tasted the soup the roast beef and soup the 5 boys remaining (vacance – All the rest gone to their friends to return next week) had for dinner – very good beef – Tender – Best we have tasted here – The Maître de Pension gave us chocolate and excellent Savoy Biscuits as we talked over Shakespeare – Mr. Stadler, too, at home on the subject of English Literature –
From there to Hajie Yoosoofs house in the square Abasabad – He shewed us several dictionaries and grammars – English Richardson’s Dictionary and Sir William Jones’s Grammar and Jauberts French Turkish Grammar – At last shewed his own MS. Grammar in Persian Tartar and Turkish – Had given 29 lessons to a young Prince Tchetchevadsoff (vide the name right spelt a p.[page] or 2 back) and he could already read and speak a little Persian – Mr. Stadler as we talked it over afterwards thought our Hajie’s grammar quite on an Eastern plan, no easier to an European, nor so easy as the common method – For my part, I am no judge – But it is probable that Lord Clanricarde will not trouble himself much about grammar or asiatic society in this case – Got away as soon as we could much obliged to Mr. S-[Stadler] –
Came in at 4 50/’’ – Sat talking – Dinner about 5 17/’’ that is eggs and barley cake and butter and a little cheese and wine and water – Had just got all sided (about 7 p.m.) when Mr. Chwostoff came and staid till 10 25/’’ – Had stood some time but we somehow got to the subject of our English Ministers and their measures and Hein came –
Soon after Mr. S-[Stadler] came we had sent for Hoffmann who arrived too tipsy to be fit for anything ∴[therefore] sent him off – With Hein la chose s’arrangeait – The carriage to be done on Thursday or Hein to forfeit (to pay) for 55/- S.[Silver] R.[Rubles] which it is now agreed to pay – He to send the carriage back but I to pay for its going to him = 3 or 4 abasses – Does not want paying till the work is done –
Had talked over the affair of the servants – Of leaving Domna – On C-‘s[Chwostoff’s] saying it would be best to give her so much, and let her arrange for herself, but surprised she would not go chez Mr. Besoc, I proposed giving her her wages as usual and doubling her allowance for nourriture i.e. giving her 2/- a day – Yes! That would be quite enough – And if I gave George 1/- per day for the time he had been here it would be quite enough –
All this settled we had tea – Green exprès for Mr. C-[Chwostoff] and he probably thought it good; for he took 2 cups – Did not know of any other place (Inn) for us to be at than this – Shops here where nothing but Persian things are sold in a Georgian (Colonel in the Russian Service) here learned in the Persian language and who has just finished or is finishing – Persian Grammar and Dictionary –
On C-‘s[Chwostoff’s] going away asked what books we could bring from England, should we return to go to Persia, that he would like – But said he was of course aware of the difficulty – All must be sent to the Censureship – He said we should get the Russian Ambassador’s seal put on the package – Box or caisse – This led to explaining the difficulty of this – Lord S.[Stuart] de R-‘s[Rothesay’s] getting our passport signed Whig Ministers &c. &c. – But inquire again as to getting the Russian Minister’s seal – He might safely give it to us – We are certainly not likely to aid the spread of Whig politics –
C-[Chwostoff] asked to see A-‘s[Ann’s] album – heard we had beautiful views &c. &c. !!! Explained – Shewed A-‘s[Ann’s] little unfinished sketches – I wish we could se fournir de jolies dessins –
Had Domna and had just read a few pp.[pages] of vol.[volume] 3 Dubois and had just written the last 4 1/2 lines of p.[page] 181 and the last p.[page] and so far of this now at 12 10/’’ – Very fine day, but rather windy –
Mr. C-[Chwostoff] spoke of the amazing of trotting horses in America – The Marquis of Sligo had bought 2 horses in Philadelphia that trotted in double harness 19 English miles an hour with ease – He had given 2000 dollars for one horse – But for 600 dollars one could have a good horse that would trot 19 miles an hour in harness – The American horses taught to trot from their ‘infancy’ –Could trot a mile in 1 20/’’ minutes to 1 1/2 minutes – the latter pace common enough! – I had boasted that our English horses could trot as well as the American – no! said I – now I give in – we cannot do that – a mile in 1/2 minute a common trotting speed = 60 x 2 / 3 = 40 miles an hour!!! they can beat our best blood horses at gallop – Yes! They could – I said I had once ridden 2 miles in 4 minutes and thought it a great thing and I had trotted 14 miles in an hour (the little brown Buskett mare at Skelfler) and thought the galloping in particular a great thing – But I had only gone at the rate of 30 miles an hour and American horses can trot at the rate of 40!!! –
It seems the great Western America-going steamer is taken up by our government for the India Mail to Alexandria and letters do not now go viâ Marseilles – And by this new arrangement government would save £60,000 a year – Speaking on the head of Whig savings, I said we paid the same taxes as before the petites économies of clerks and ladies pensions &c. &c. and in a time of and after 20 years of profound peace, we still borrowed, Ministers could not make all ends meet! –
C-[Chwostoff] said we were better off in war – No nation had gained by the peace – Nor England nor Russia nor France still in a precarious state – And we should go on from change to change till we had (such was the sense of his phrase) run the whole rig – Had just written so far now at 12 40/’’

Nowości, plotki i zapowiedzi w formie krótkich wpisów. Zapraszam.
Tumblr media
Trzy pierwsze zeszyty trafiły ponownie do sprzedaży. Zestawienie 2nd printingu numeru #1, 3rd printingu #2 oraz 2nd printingu numeru trzeciego stworzyło poniższą grafikę. Spidey’a, Thora oraz Wolverine’a narysował Finch.
Tumblr media
Jeżeli chcielibyście powiększyć kolekcję o te wersje, to zmieścicie się spokojnie w 10$.
Tumblr media
Zostałem w 2008, bo kilka miesięcy później, dokładnie w sierpniu, zadebiutował Wolverine #66, czyli początek klasycznej historii Old Man Logan. Pięć numerów serii dostało kilka wznowień, a niektóre z nich utworzyły jedną grafikę.
Numery #655-#659 zawierały historię No One Dies oraz tie-iny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dodruki i pozostałe warianty do starszych serii Moon Knighta mocno trzymają cenę.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seria FF z 2011 to kolejny przykład connecting dodruków.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crossover to trzy zeszyty, a mianowicie The Avenging Spider-Man #6, Daredevil #11 (vol. 3) i The Punisher #10 (vol. 5). Numery te dostały 2nd printingi, które były wariantami connecting. Znowu wykorzystano pomysł z napisem (nazwa wydarzenia) oraz znowu grafiki wewnątrz liter. Rysunki są autorstwa Marco Checchetto. Co ciekawe, pierwsze druki tych numerów dostępne były w wersjach ratio 1:20 i też tworzyły jeden obrazek. Autorem jest Adi Granov. Dodruki to wydatek około 50$, pierwsze wydania kosztują około 80$-90$.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teraz chwila odpoczynku od Domu Pomysłów. W roku 2015 wydawnictwo Black Mask Comics opublikowało komiks We Can Never Go Home autorstwa Matthew Rosenberga i Patricka Kindlona, z rysunkami Josha Hooda. Cena to około 20$. Sklep JetPack Comics oferował ekskluzywne connecting warianty do tej serii.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teraz coś dla fanów Image oraz The Walking Dead. Jeżeli lubicie postać Negana, to koniecznie musicie dodać do kolekcji zestaw 6 dodruków. Zeszyty od #97 do #102 trafiały ponownie do sprzedaży z kawałkami grafiki przedstawiającej Negana dzierżącego Lucille. Na całość składają się warianty do numeru #98-#99, #101-#102 (2nd printing) i #100 (3rd printing). Rysunek Cliffa Rathburna robi wrażenie. Zestaw tych zeszytów, który został poddany gradacji CGC, to wydatek rzędu 600$-700$. Pojedyncze zeszyty bez oceny kosztują od 50$ do 100$.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jeżeli lubicie świat Dark Crystal, to zapewne ucieszy Was poniższa grafika.
Tumblr media
Wydane w 2017 Power of the Dark Crystal #1 oraz #2 (BOOM! Studios) zostały dodrukowane jako okładki connecting. Autorem rysunków jest Derek Kirk Kim. Na rynku wtórnym zestaw kosztuje około 80$.
Wydawnictwo ponownie użyło tego pomysłu w roku 2019 i wypuściło połączone dodruki do Ronin Island #1 i #2.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Champions #19 oraz #20 zostały dodrukowane jako połączone okładki.
Tumblr media
Zeszyt #19 to debiut Snowguard i właśnie tę postać widać na wariantach. Po wielu latach Marvel znowu wykorzystał pomysł z napisem wypełnionym grafiką. Okładki można kupić w cenie około 15$.
Tumblr media
Nie mogę pominąć dwóch świetnych mini serii, czyli House of X oraz Powers of X. Na 5th printingu HoX #1 oraz PoX #1 zagościła grafika Marka Brooksa. Ten sam rysunek, tyle że w kolorze, ozdobił warianty connecting z pierwszego druku. Komiksy kosztują około 10$-12$.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Przed Wami połączone dodruki, które spowodowały, że powstał ten tekst :) Kilka dni temu Marvel ujawnił, że dodruki Magnificent Ms Marvel #7-#9 stworzą jedną grafikę. Autorem będzie Luciano Vecchio.
Tumblr media
Powyższa niebieska, świecąca postać to Stormranger.
Tumblr media
Numer #1 jest trzecim dodrukiem (4th printing), #2 to 3rd printing, a pozostałe zeszyty to 2nd printingi. Każdy z komiksów to wydatek 4$.
Tumblr media
Zachęcam do śledzenia bloga. Pozdro!

100 Days of Graphic Novels
Subtitle: “Working 70 Hour Weeks and Commuting Means Reading But Not Writing.”
I am trying for more accountability, but, when my idiotic work schedule gets even more idiotic, sometimes it’s just my judgmental calendar of doom that’s keeping me on track. Also my cat. He judges me - harshly.
Tumblr media
Look on my missing leg, ye Mighty, and despair!
Ahem. Anyway. So many books:
Day 1: The Umbrella Academy vol 1: The Apocalypse Suite Day 2: CatStronauts: Mission Mars Day 3: Apannine War Diary Day 4: Alex + Ada vol 1 Day 5: Alex + Ada vol 2 Day 6: Visitations Day 7: Another Day of Life Day 8: Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller vol 1 Day 9: Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank Day 10: Scarlet Witch vol 1: Witches’ Road Day 11: Jessica Jones vol 1: Uncaged Day 12: Infidel Day 13: The Deep Blue Good-by Day 14: City of Illusions Day 15: Mockingbird vol 1: I Can Explain Day 16: Ms. Marvel vol 1: Best of the Best Day 17: X-Men Gold vol 1: Back to the Basics Day 18: Kaptara vol 1: Fear Not, Tiny Alien Day 19: Eclipse vol 1 Day 20: Defenders vol 1: Diamonds are Forever Day 21: Hellcat vol 1: Hooked on a Feline Day 22: Chosin Day 23: Elektra vol 1: Bloodlines Day 24: They’re Not Like Us Day 25: Multiple Man vol 1: It All Makes Sense in the End Day 26: Captain America: Sam Wilson: Not My Captain America Day 27: A Russian Journal Day 28: Iron Patriot vol 1: Unbreakable Day 29: Divinity Day 30: Jessica Jones: Alias vol 1 Day 31: Tales of Suspense: Hawkeye and the Winter Soldier Day 32: The Fuse vol 1: The Russian Shift Day 33: Jessica Jones: Alias vol 2 Day 34: Into the Tunnel Day 34: Jessica Jones: Alias vol 3 Day 35: A-Force vol 1 Day 36: Edge of the Spider-Verse Day 37: Descender vol 1 Day 38: Descender vol 2 Day 39: Black Panther: World of Wakanda Day 40: A Farewell to Arms Day 41: I’m Not Leaving Day 42: Green Arrow: Year One Day 43: Daniel’s Story Day 44: Aurora’s Motive Day 45: Jessica Jones vol 4 Day 46: Symmetry Day 47: Afar Day 48: Morning Glories vol 1
Day 49: One Way Ticket
Tumblr media
A math professor at a nearby university related her escape from WWII to England. Interesting not just for the political trials and hoops through which she had to jump to get herself and her family out of Europe, but also for the way that retelling, rather than primary recording, has influenced the main thrust of the story. Also: illustrated. Adorably.
Day 50: The life of Captain Marvel
I’m not saying I hated this book – I’m just saying that I’m opposed to it on a cellular level.
Day 51: Captain Marvel vol 1: In Pursuit of Flight
Did I need a mind-bleach of what I’d read the day before? Yes. Yes, I did.
Day 52: The Boy Who Reversed Himself             True story: William Sleator was my favorite author for about a year in middle school. I read every one of his books that our libraries had, and then I read them all again. Six or seven times each (to the shock of absolutely no one who knows me). This book has forever changed the way I consider catsup. And it wasn’t nearly as racist as I’d expected, flipping back through. Hooray?
Day 53: To Fight Alongside Friends
My best friend roped me into doing an online werewolf game based in WWI. I role-played as Charlie May, the author of this diary, and refused to respond with anything but direct quotes from his book. If nothing else, I entertain myself.
Day 54: Operation: Broken Wings
Day 55: My War Diary
This one is by Dov Yermiya and is about Lebanon from June 5 – July 1, 1982. I have about six books within easy reach called “My War Diary.” This could prove problematic later. (Also, despite writing about Waltz With Bashir in grad school and for my dissertation, I still don’t know enough about this conflict)
Day 56: Descender vol 3 Day 57: Morning Glories vol 2 Day 58: The Drowned and the Saved Day 59: Jessica Jones: Pulse
Day 60: Zlata’s Diary
I read this when sitting in the jail on a Friday night. There’s nothing quite so jarring as reading a firsthand account of the absolute disruption of life (and childhood, in a lot of ways), while listening to drunk sorority girls sob on their phones to their mothers and then scream about their Uber.
Day 61: Captain Marvel vol 2: Down Day 62: Avengers: The Enemy Within Day 63: Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster, More Day 64: Captain Marvel: Stay Fly Day 65: Captain Marvel: Alis Volat Propiis Day 66: Carol Danvers vol 1: The Ms Marvel Years
Day 67: One Week in the Library
Please give me more weeks, Image Comics. Please.
Day 68: The Troop
Noel Clarke, I love you, but this feels like well-trod ground at this point.
Day 69: Bitch Planet
I legitimately squealed, out loud, when Kelly Sue DeConnick was on screen during Captain Marvel. High pitched. And then, because I have no game, I whacked my BFF on the arm and whispered (er, “whispered”?) “THAT WAS KELLY SUE!!” No one else was impressed by my mad comic knowledge, but, eh.
Day 70: Jessica Jones vol 3: Return of the Purple Man
Guess which superstar never read volume 2? That’s right - THIS superstar.
Day 71: Mr. & Mrs. X
Basically, I love Gambit. I’m okay with Rogue, but I’ve lived in the Deep South for too long to be completely okay with the extremes of character. And I also don’t really like Deadpool. At all. Despite all of that, I still enjoyed this.
Day 72: Secret Avengers vol 1: Reverie
Unlike this, which did NOT get better with age. Ooooof.
Day 73: Avengers AI vol 1: Human After All
Tumblr media
Did I buy this simply for this picture of Vision holding a kitten? Yes. Do I regret that? No.
Day 74: Tet Day 75: Iron Fist: Rage Day 76: Zero vol 1: An Emergency Day 77: Faster than Light
Day 78: Descender vol 4: Orbital Mechanics
I sent my BFF a copy of Descender because it’s gorgeous. Because she has even worse impulse control than me, she bought all of the other volumes and has already finished the series. I can’t even be mad.
Day 79: Lost Dossiers: Super Spy
AKA: This would have made way more sense had I realized that this was a supplement to another work… which I don’t yet own. Womp womp womp. Maybe tomorrow I’ll read the From Hell companion, just for kicks.
Day 80: Carnet de Voyage Day 81: Hype Day 82: Dancer Day 83-85: Day 86: Wonderful World of Oz
Day 87: Port of Earth
Know what I love about Zack Kaplan? He creates immersive worlds that aren’t just one thing – there’s not just one neat storyline wrapped up by the end of the trade, and there isn’t just one type of story at work.
Day 88: Material Day 89: Captain America: the 1940s Newspaper Strip Day 90: Peter Panzerfaust vol 1: The Great Escape Day 91: Cowl vol 1
Day 92: Ministry of Space
            That ending, though.
Day 93: X-Men Gold vol 2 Day 94: The Winter Soldier vol 1: The Longest Winter Day 95: The Winter Soldier vol 2: Broken Arrow
Day 96: Graphic Classics vol 22: African American Classics
I yelped when I saw that Afua Richardson, Personal Hero, had worked on this. I have a panel from her illustration of Langston Hughes’ “Rivers” (done for NPR), and it is one of my very favorite things.
Day 97: New York: The Big City
Day 98: A Wexford Childhood
You would think that a memoir covering 1915-1930 might touch on some rumbling of war. You’d be wrong. But, it was an interesting view of the changing world, nonetheless.
Day 99: Winter Soldier vol 3: Black Widow Hunt
Brubaker, why must you hurt me so?
Day 100: X-Men Rarities
There are few things that bring me such joy as the stiff pages of a 90s era Marvel trade – and, when those trades include comics with Chamber? I am so in. Now, someone explain to me how they always smell like cigarettes and wet dog, regardless of origin, and I’ll be all set.

Hi! I have never read comics but for a while I've been wanting to read something. And because Captain Marvel movie is coming soon, I thought I could start with Carol Danvers, but I really have no idea about the continuity and what could be great to prepare myself for the movie. Could you give me some directions, because the comic verse seems really confusing for me?
Hullo! Comics continuity are messy in general so you just have to pick a point and go. Once you start you get used to it quickly. I personally read the character history on wiki first just to get a general idea and then started reading stuff.
Not gonna lie, I have read very little from 50 years worth of comics so not the best person to ask this question but having said that, for the movie I’d recommend:
The Kree-Skrull War story arc in Avengers Vol 1 (1963) #89-#97 — The movie is gonna loosely follow this arc as its main story line.
Captain Marvel Vol 7 & 8 by Kelly Sue DeConnick (2012-2015) — I’m 99% sure the movie will be HEAVILY inspired by KSD’s run. It’s the best.
Avengers The Enemy Within (skip to the end for the reading order)
As for Carol Danvers in general:
Ms Marvel Vol 1 by Gerry Conway
Ms. Marvel Vol 2 by Brian Reed
Captain Marvel & the Carol Corps by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Life of Captain Marvel Vol 2 (2018) by Margaret Stohl (Only the first issue is out so you can easily catch up no prior knowledge required)
And this reading list
This is not a complete list and I’m probably missing some crucial issues especially the Avengers and X-Men stuff but its a decent starting point. You can then google more recommended reading and carry on.
