"what is that you're listening to?"
"oh, that- it's my Old Earth radio, it's the only thing able to pick up the signals of the stations we pass by." "The stations are little beacons set up on random planets by humans, mostly those from Old Earth. They took whatever songs were their favorites and put them on these little transmitters to just... play through them at random until the transmitter breaks... or the universe goes out, I guess." "I like looking for 'em whenever I'm on long treks like this. Dunno why, some of them are just full of garbage, but... It's like, y'know, you're not really on your own out here, for as long as the music plays. Keeps the madness away, I guess."
"Humans are quite sentimental."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. You wanna listen for a bit? This one reminds of some the old man used to listen to; no words in it, just the instruments... Pretty nice, really."

XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS | A Tribute to When Fates Collide
youtube
"When Fates Collide" Season 6, Episode 18 of Xena: Warrior Princess is one of the best of the series. It is also one of the more visually cinematic episodes of the franchise. This along with the storytelling make for quite the epic saga of two souls lost in a question of predeterminism. Xena and Gabrielle were fated to meet each other, but their destiny is of their own choosing.
This episode originally aired May 7th, 2001 in the show's last season. There were three more episodes after this before the show's finale "A Friend In Need Pt. 2" which received mixed reviews. Many fans consider "When Fates Collide" to be the true finale, especially those who love the relationship dynamic between Xena and Gabrielle.
Xena: Warrior Princess stars Lucy Lawless (Xena) and Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle). The show was produced by Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi, fathers of the Evil Dead franchise. This particular episode guest stars Karl Urban as Julius Caesar and Claire Stansfield as Alti.

I do have a bunch of posts ready to go in the queue, but then today I got a big job which took most of my time. The rest of my time went to my kiddos, and that’s what this post is about.
They’ve both gotten into playing instruments recently, and between their dad and I, we can reasonably teach them fundamentals of many different instruments. Anyway, tonight the 11 year old was messing around on keyboard and asked me to teach him some stuff and play with him, and at one point I started playing a bit of “Moonlight Sonata.” And he said: “Wow, that’s beautiful. But also sad? It sorta makes me want to cry, but in a good way?” And that made me want to cry because it’s like yes, my little dude, welcome to how I feel all of the time.

Oh since I revealed more about Sonata I can post this Sonata concept art of if she got to grow to adult size. I'm not sure if it would have ever really happened but it's still an interesting idea. She'd still be quite dainty as an adult.

My Beethoven conspiracy on the Moonlight Sonata as a hearing impaired musician
Disclaimer: I have never met or talked to Beethoven, he does not know me, we have never met. Sadly.
Right, this is probably so incredibly far from the truth, but music is up for interpretation, and this is my own
First off: I have moderate-moderately severe hearing loss and I'm losing my vision. Both important facts for later.
Now, for hearing loss. Although Beethoven wasn't Deaf with a capital D yet, he still had some hearing loss. For all you non-deaf folks (losers), hearing loss is not simply everything growing quiet and muffled. The first thing to go when loosing hearing loss are the higher frequencies. Your high-pitched beeps or sounds go first. That is why I can have a perfectly normal conversation with my guy friends without my hearing aids, but when I talk to my female friends I struggle. Then eventually everything else goes.
The Moonlight Sonata, particularly the first movement is written in lower octaves. Although it does go higher at different points (like in the last movement) it mostly stays around middle C or below, give or take an octave. Do you see what I'm getting at here? Perhaps because his symptoms were beginning to set in, he wrote a piece in the lower octave where he could still hear it properly. That's my first big thing.
Next: The context of what this sonata is about is still a bit unclear, but someone described it as "the first movement has an unspeakable mystery and tragedy, which finally results in rage and fury in the last movement."
Unspeakable misery and tragedy??? Rage and Fury???? Sounds like someone just discovered he's losing a sense, especially his most important one. RELATABLE. Okay, if you have some semblance of emotional intelligence, you may be able to understand how debilitating it is to discover that one of the most important ways in which you view and understand the world is rapidly deteriorating. Horrible, right? I've come to terms with it after two arduous years because there's so much technology an whatnot, but Beethoven? Hearing aids hadn't been invented. Sign language was a thing, but it probably wasn't very popular. And also, minor detail, this guy's whole career depended on being able to hear. Yeah. My guy is understandably angry and depressed at the world.
So what's the little happy bit in the middle? No clue, I'm still working that out. Maybe it's just because the whole Sonata would be too depressing if there wasn't the 2nd movement. Maybe it's Beethoven being grateful for other things.
Anyway, I am most definitely reading way too much into this, but this is my own spin on the Moonlight Sonata.
Next long rant by yours truly: why Debussy is my favourite because he manages to capture light, of all things, in sound. And also why he is the music Monet and Ivan Aivazovsky.
