The Cartographer of Mêlée Island
(the reason I drew that Monkey Island map, posted previously.)

The original LucasArts Monkey Island game came out when I was a kid and so fundamentally influenced my sense of humor and drawing style (those tiny one-pixel black eyes burrowing into your soul) that I felt I should draw something to show my appreciation.
I finished Return to Monkey Island, the long-awaited newest sequel, a month ago (but mixed feelings about it) so I did a portrait of my favorite character from the original game series.

Tried to design a compromise between all the different incarnations of cartographer Wally B. Feed — Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, The Curse of Monkey Island, the redesigned Monkey Island 2 Special Edition (yuck), and this year's Return to Monkey Island.

... in a composition inspired by the heroic portraiture of the late 18th century (e.g. George Romney, Charles Wilson Peale and son), where the learned gentleman of leisure (British) or earnest craftsperson (American) is always depicted momentarily distracted in their work, surrounded by the symbolic trappings of their life, looking into the middle distance contemplating... something... Primarily using these two painting as models for reference—

Other than the buckles on his shoes, there is nothing pirate-y about Wally's outfit. Monocles weren't even widely used until the Victorian/Edwardian era... 100+ years later than the "Golden Age of Piracy." As much as the series maintains a *scrupulous* dedication to being historically inaccurate, I hewed closer to ambiguously 1760-1790 colonial/pirate-y costume aesthetic, but without doing any actual research. Aiming for the sweet spot: Less Disneyland More Colonial-Williamsburg-on-a-bad-day. ( We stan a craftsman's apron connecting to a waistcoat button.)

after the dinner, mihawk offers you to walk around his vast estate, watching the sunset on the island with him
he’ll propose that you stay on the island for tonight, showing you to an extravagant room, but he is happy to escort you back to your own home if you choose

crocodile takes you to a lavish restaurant in arabasta (one that he owns, he’s had this planned for about a week)
the service is exquisite, if you want something all you have to do is tell crocodile and he’ll snap his fingers and ta-da! Instant assistance!
sometimes you think you see crocodile subtly threatening the workers, but he plays it off as friendly banter between boss and subordinate
he asks about your interests, taking note of your likes and dislikes in order to buy you the perfect overpriced gifts
every so often he’ll sneak in a flirtatious remark, flashing you a smirk (and was that a wink?)
once you finish your meals he’ll escort you out in perfect gentlemanly fashion, taking your arm and guiding you down the steps
afterwards he’ll offer to show you around arabasta, showing you the hottest tourist locations (skipping every line because he is the crocodile) if you choose to accompany him

hancock proposes a relaxing gondola ride, except instead of a person rowing the boat it’s salome tugging it
she packs every dish and meal imaginable: breakfast, lunch, dinner, even dessert
for a while she’ll try to hand feed you, insisting that you don’t lift a finger on this peaceful boat ride
the ride is mostly quiet, except for the occasional sea king who interrupts the ride (and boa immediately turns to stone)
she’ll slowly snake her hand behind your shoulders, her face getting redder the further she gets
sometimes she’ll sneak a kiss in, never daring to go past your forehead (her heart might explode)
when you return to the island she’ll ask if you just want to cuddle, wanting to spend the rest of the day alone with you

doflamingo obviously takes you to the classiest venue money could buy: a casino
chances are he probably owns the place, which explains why he’s dropping so much money on the slots (which he keeps winning somehow)
he calls you his ‘good luck charm,’ having you sit on his lap as he plays cards at the high-stakes table
if you ask nicely, he’ll probably let you wear his pink coat which you find out is incredibly soft and probably made with real flamingo feathers
he pulls you closer when the game becomes more intense, whispering flirty comments into your ear while he intimidates the competition
doffy gives you all of his winnings (he’s rich, why would he need all this spare change?)
he’ll take you shopping after with your recently earned money, letting you sit on his towering shoulders as you stroll through the streets of dressrosa

The sand burns. 
Not literally, no. It’s not hot to the touch. It couldn’t be, after such a dreary maelstrom as last night’s. But it digs into your knees. It itches. Makes you want to peel off the top layer of your skin just to scratch the bone. 
Your fingers curve around a useless excuse for a chest. You thought you had lost it in the wreckage of your cruddy little boat, only to find it had washed ashore. It’s a miracle, you suppose, but a pointless one. The iron lock you splurged on only a few days ago is unlatched: rusted and broken. None of your belongings remain inside except for a busted log pose. Nothing else—your berri, your tools, your clothing, your journals, your mother’s hairpin—all gone. And all you can think about are the fucking grains of sand pinching your skin.  
It burns. Like the burning in your lungs, as you suffocate alone underneath the swell of the sea. It burns, it burns, it burns, it—
“Tuna.”
There’s a hand on your shoulder. It startles you. You turn; follow the length of the arm to find it attached to the body of Monkey D. Luffy. You don’t know when he approached you. You don’t know how long he’s sat there, watching you stare at your dumb piece of shit chest. 
“What’re ya staring at it for? It’s empty.”
The accusation washes over you like a tidal wave. Threatens to pull you under. 
You don’t know how to respond. How do you explain the quiet devastation this wooden box has put you through? You had your whole life in here at one point. Everything important to you, condensed neatly in one mid-sized treasure chest. And now it’s empty. Now, you have nothing.
“My name’s not Tuna,” you say. Because it’s not—it never was.
The boy retrieves his hand to rest it atop his straw hat, draping a shadow over his face. “You sure?” The boy questions. Something flickers in his eyes that you can’t quite discern through the veil of darkness. It almost… burns. Like the sand. “What is it, then?”
“Yuna,” you reply. Because it is—always has been.
Luffy tilts his head, as if scrutinizing you. He digs a finger in his ear, pulls it out, and scrutinizes that, too. “You didn’t answer my other question. Answer it.”
He’s a little rude, you think to yourself. Demanding things from you when he can’t even bother to get your name right. 
Still, you sigh. You wouldn’t comply so easily under normal circumstances. You don’t make it a habit of obeying the boys you encounter in the waters of a strange island, strange ocean, stranger world. But there’s something in the air, you think. Charged, like the air before a strike of lightning—perhaps the remnants of last night’s storm.
“I’m looking for something,” you admit.
He perks up. “For what?”
Everything. “A reason.” 
“A reason.”
“Mhm.”
“To do what, live?” He asks, setting his hat down in the sand. You tense. He’s a lot sharper than you realized. “You don’t need a reason," he says. "Just do what you want.”
You sputter. “That’s not—Forget what I said. It’s just that—I can feel everything and nothing at the same time, and I… I’m having a mental breakdown, I think.”
A pause.
The pirate scratches his chin. “Oh. Maybe don’t, then.”
Something about his offhand tone startles a chuckle out of you. Luffy peers at you, coal eyes harsh, studying, before his eyes droop in satisfaction, something coy tugging at his lips. 
Another chuckle slips out that blooms into a full-bellied laugh, and then he’s snickering too, and then you’re gripping the sand in an attempt to stay upright because your sides are in stitches, and your cheeks hurt like a bitch, and he’s here and good and free. By the time you calm down, Luffy’s splayed out in the sand, arms pillowing his head, and he’s looking up at you. There’s a gentle hint of curiosity behind his smile, and it warms you and sends something buoyant shooting through your limbs: from your chest to the very tips of your toes. 
Maybe don’t, then. It’s possibly the worst advice you’ve ever heard. Possibly the best. 
“I made you laugh, didn’t I?” The pirate asks.
You freeze.
“I guess you did, yeah.” 
It’s the acknowledgment that reels you back in. Your belongings are gone. Your mother is gone. And you laughed. How? How could you laugh, when you have nothing to your name? How could you laugh, when you have no one to call your own?  
The confirmation makes Luffy’s grin grow wider. “Good,” he says. And he is so wild, and assured, and strange. “I thought you forgot how to.” 
It burns, you realize. His attention. 
For Monkey D. Luffy gets what he wants. If he wants you to laugh, to prove that you can do so, you will. You wonder what he wants out of this conversation. What he wants out of you. What can you give? What will he take?
Maybe he’ll take everything.  
Maybe he’ll want nothing,
Your eyes flicker to the sea. A waxing moon hangs over the horizon. She glimmers, translucent and transient in her waters, ebbing and flowing, flowing and ebbing. Beneath her, a ship with a lion head bobs against the coast. 
The night is still. Hushed.
You look at your hands. There's sand on your palms.
“What are you doing out here?” You change the subject, still watching the tide. A few hours ago you were drowning in the very same sea. Now you sit with the boy who saved you, safe and dry, with rocks clinging to your skin.
“What’re you?” Luffy challenges.
A gust of wind ruffles the trees, your clothing. It tastes of salt, when you open your mouth to speak. “Wallowing,” you confess. For some reason, you cannot lie to this strange, persistent boy. Maybe it’s due to the fact that you owe him. For it’s he who pulled you out of the water. It’s he who dragged you from the maw of death. 
“You shouldn’t be,” he says. 
“And who are you to judge?” You turn to face him and find his eyes transfixed on you.
He shrugs. “I’m Luffy, and ’m not judging ya. I’m just sayin’.” 
“Saying what, exactly?” You ask, voice hushed like the night; desperate like the tide. 
Luffy’s sitting up now, rolling a seashell around his fingers. Your attention is drawn to his neck, where the apple in his throat bobs, and it takes you a second to steer your gaze back to his. 
His eyes burn. Bright, even in the dark. “That sitting here alone, moping around is a waste.”  
A pause.
“I’m not alone,” you point out. 
“Yeah,” he nods. “Not anymore.”
It burns.
You dig your feet into the sand—feel teeny tiny rocks sift through the gaps between your toes. You wonder if Luffy has ever felt doubt. Wonder if he’s ever felt fear. 
For fear has not yet unlatched its brutal grip on your heart. It creeps along the fraying edges of your mind. It cups its hands against your ear and whispers sweet nothings. The fact is, Fear murmurs, this won’t last long. Monkey D. Luffy has always been able to do what he wants, when he wants, just because he can. He doesn’t need the contents of a wooden box to tell him who he is. He has no room for doubt. 
You are not the same.
So why is he here, taking the time out of his night to admonish you? What does he hope to gain? What does he hope to take?
“I wanna hear you laugh again,” Luffy taps your wrist, pulling you out of your spiral. “Get ready for my joke!” And it’s not a request, it’s a command. And, like you’ve been doing all night, you acquiesce. He shoots you a boyish smile for your assent, and your next inhale is shaky. 
There’s a voice in your head advising you to be cautious, however. For embers glow in Luffy’s round, coal eyes. And if you’re not careful, the voice warns, your savior may burn you from the inside out.

Summary: Reader has been a Revolutionary since birth. But her first mission went terribly wrong, leaving her friend Sabo terribly scarred. They've stuck together since the day he lost his memory--but she remembers everything. So when news hits the papers, and Sabo falls ill, Reader has to grapple with the outcomes and consequences of her first and longest-running mission. Has she succeeded or failed? What happens when her former-amnesiac Sabo finally remembers her?

ROGER'S SON, FIRE FIST ACE, DEAD AT MARINEFORD
This is it. I failed. Two out of three thoughts circled in Y/N's head. Day in and day out. Sun up to sun down. The third, well, the third, was on a loop all its own. A sensation not unlike an iron brand or an ice pick to the chest every time she heard those words inside her head.
Guard him with your life.
That's what Dragon had told her. Her, her mother, her father - her parent's final mission when they set off all those years ago. 'I've hidden something precious on that island. Your mission is to Guard it with your life.' At first, she thought it was just Luffy she was meant to protect. They had docked at Fuschia Village and moved in right next to a little barkeep and one Monkey D. Luffy, and she assumed that was the end of that. Just keep that little twerp out of trouble as best she could, and her mission would be complete.
Then those blasted pirates came to town and threw a wrench in their plans. She should've known those pirates were a goddamned trouble magnet. Bringing mountain bandits down on their heads. Convincing Luffy to stab himself in the face...and that stupid straw hat. After that, things only ever got worse. Luffy was dragged into the mountains by his grandfather, so of course, Y/N chased after him. But then - for reasons unfathomable to her - Luffy started chasing after Ace. The idiot was constantly risking his life for the sake of some stranger who literally put the two of them through Hell.
Of course, that boy would turn out to be the son of a Demon.
Portgas D Ace, the lost son and only descendant of the legendary Gold Roger. A boy she hadn't put any stock in at first. A feral child she assumed to be some spawn that loud-mouthed bandit lady didn't want. At first, the truth sent Y/N reeling.
Wait, is this what Dragon really meant? She thought. Something Precious. Guard it with your Life.
Suddenly, not was she in the presence of the son of Dragon, but also the son of Roger -- two of the most wanted legacies in all the world. Two lives the World Government would love to snuff out for good. Guard it with your life. Guard it with your life. The words kept cycling, skipping, repeating in her head over and over again. So that's what she did.
Sworn to secrecy, Y/N dedicated herself to ensuring that Luffy and Ace survived to reach their majority. Saving Luffy's sorry butt from those blasted Blue Jam Pirates. Bailing that hot-tempered Ace out of fights he couldn't win. Teaching both boys how to sneak behind grownups undetected. To pick their pockets. To play to their sympathies and get what ya want from them. Garp and the bandits called them all reckless hoodlums. But the only hoodlum who had ever reached back and saved her skin - was Sabo.
He knew the lay of the land better than almost anyone. Could navigate both Grey Terminal and the Inner City even with his eyes closed. And if Ace wouldn't listen to her in a fight (which was often), he would listen to Sabo. And that was good enough for her. He was kinder to Luffy than either Ace or Y/N had the patience for, trying his best to train the boy in his devil fruit even with no powers of his own.
Powerless. She remembered that day. The day that golden boy in blue turned himself into - no, for us. Y/N bit her cheek. He left to save us.
She remembered the night when the fire started. Everything happened at once till all that came to mind was a rush of sensations. The smell of burning flesh. The ring of dying screams. The stampede of footsteps, desperate to escape.
'Luffy! Ace!'
Howling and screaming for her parents in the wreckage, when she couldn't see a thing.
'Mama! Papa!'
Lost in the maze of melting metal and tongues of flame. Guard them with your life. Guard them with your life. The words on repeat and repeat and repeat - and then he appeared. The source of that never-ending mantra.
Monkey D. Dragon himself.
Y/N reported the situation, just as she'd been trained. It didn't matter that she was straining for breath. The tears blurring her vision didn't matter. Coarse hands smeared the saltwater and grime from her cheeks.
'Head to the ship,' His deep voice instructed. 'I will take it from here.'
Y/N did as she was told. Upon Dragon's ship, her fellow Revolutionaries were awaiting her. All senior agents and officers. She spent all night in the crow's nest of that ship, watching the black plumes of smoke rise into the night. Eyes eagerly searched the dancing firelight for any silhouette she might recognize.
'Luffy, Ace, Mama, Papa - where are you?'
Surely Dragon would find them. Surely Dragon would take them home. Goa was no longer safe if it ever was. Surely Ace and Luffy could be better protected on Baltigo. Surely she and her family could take a break from active duty. Then finally, she could be honest with her friends.
Her parents never came home.
She never saw her friends again.
Upon the first light of morning, the only thing she saw was the smouldering wastes of Grey Terminal. -What was left of it, anyway. The Revolutionaries set to caring for those who escaped the wreckage. The refugees who now, more so than ever, had truly lost everything. All that day, Y/N's fellow agents looked after the wounded, offering them food and drink, even a place among their ranks. All the while, Y/N kept her eyes fixed on what remained of her family's hunting grounds. The jungle was thankfully untouched. The Upper City almost disgustingly so. But she saw no movement amidst the smoke and metal. No familiar silhouettes. No one.
The only things of note were the sounds of cheering and the blasting of a canon. Some sort of fanfare or festival must've been going on on the other side of the city. The sky scraping sprawl of the Nobles' estates kept Y/N from getting a clear view of its source. The Celestial Dragons must've been approaching the southerly port, she thought. She wouldn't have known that if Sabo hadn't drawn a map for her all those months ago.
Sabo... Her chest ached at the thought. She imagined the boy trapped behind a window in one of those pristine white buildings. His whole life was condemned to stay behind layers upon layers of cold stone walls. If Ace and Luffy died in that fire, their brother would never be free.
And what about me? The thought occurred to her as a chill down her spine. What force for good would she be if she knew he was trapped there and did nothing? What kind of friend would she be if she left them all behind? Yet again, Dragon's commission reverberated in her mind. Guard them with your life. Guard them with your life. --but how?!
Sunlight was already being swallowed by the sea by the time Dragon returned. Y/N could see the black of his cloak wandering between piles of smouldering rubble. But beyond her target's line of sight, something else caught her eye. Out there, floating in on the tide, was a familiar stove pipe hat. The glint of those oversized goggles at their brim was unmistakable.
Sabo!
Without a thought, Y/N leapt from the crows' nest and dove headfirst into that tepid water. The impact stole the breath from her lungs. But she didn't have time to stop. Arms and legs pressed her onwards, chest burning. Through the blur of the salt water, she could see the petite silhouette, those tailored blue clothes stained in smoke and blood.
Blood-?! Y/N paddled faster. The current pushed and pulled her side to side, tearing her off course, but she would not be deterred. Diving deeper, she perched herself on the nearest boulder on the ocean floor. She could feel the pressure of the ocean trying to pull her down. But the shadow cast by Sabo's limp body in the water spurred her on. She pushed off the rock and up towards the surface. Her arms crooked *just so* to catch Sabo under his arms and catapult them into the fresh air.
Foam and shards of wood sprayed around her. Y/N gasped for air. Every muscle burned and ached. Beyond her, a discordant choir of voices were hollering and calling out her name. She could see her leader's black cloak reach the shoreline. His strides paused upon hearing his crew's commotion.
'Dragon-sama!' she cried. 'Here! Right here!'
The Revolutionary turned. Every scrap of seafaring wind squealed in shock at what he saw.
'Help!' Y/N called out. 'He's hurt, please!'
The tides seemed rattled by the change in weather. A breaking wave shoved both Y/N and her unconscious friend forward. Out of her eye, she saw that stove pipe hat getting knocked about in the torrent. Wait-! Grabbing a nearby bar of flotsam wood, Y/N scrambled to hook the hat like a fish on a spear and fling it towards the shoreline. When the next wave hit, she transferred her limp friend's weight from her front to her back. When her feet finally touched the sand, she could race to Dragon's side and snatch Sabo's hat from him.
'We need to get a doctor, sir, right away.'
Dragon blinked. As he scanned the injured Sabo from head to toe, something shifted in his face.
'Y/N, do you know this boy?'
'Yessir,' No reason to lie to her leader. 'He and Luffy were bond brothers.' she glanced at her friend's face. Dripping in saltwater and blood. Everything within her ached. '...All he wanted was to be free.'
Her elder nodded. 'Very well. We can grant him that much.'
And that was the beginning. Or...maybe the end? Y/N never resumed her initial mission in Fuschia Village. When Dragon told her about her parent's fates in the fire, he formally dismissed her from active duty. She tried to press the issue, saying Luffy and Ace still needed her, but to that, he said:
'At least one of them has unlocked Conqueror's Haki. After this, neither should find much danger in the East Blue.'
Your job has been done for you. --He didn't say that last part, but she certainly heard it in his voice. Her mother always said, 'Spies are well versed in the art of subtext'.
Now, years later, come to find out, neither of her East Blue friends had ever been safe. From the moment Ace left Fuschia, he was dogged by an Ensign and then enslaved by a Yonko. Two Yonko, if Y/N's information network was to be believed. She found it hard once she got word that Ace was pursuing an exiled crewmate who'd turned around and murdered another in their ranks. That second Yonkou, Whitebeard - Ace wouldn't have done that if he didn't believe in the old geezer.
Then Luffy was chased to Paradise by an East Blue captain, where he proceeded to dethrone one of the Shichibukai! And several more after that! Hell, Luffy went all the way to Enies Lobby and fucking declared War on the World Government! The first time Y/N read that headline, she swore she nearly had an aneurysm. Meanwhile, Dragon was sitting at the head of the conference table fucking smirking about it. Little did she know things were only gonna get worse from there.
Ace was captured by the Marines.
Ace was sent to the deepest level of Impel Down.
Ace was revealed publicly to be the son of Gold Roger.
Ace was sentenced to be executed at Marineford.
A secret of the highest clearance has been exposed to the world - and Y/N wasn't there to keep him safe. Not like she promised. Not like she'd been tasked to do for as long as she could remember. Her orders were to 'guard them with your life'. ...And she hadn't done it.
The moment she heard the news of Ace's arrest, she raced to Dragon's office immediately. Requested reconnaissance, search and rescue, and any team fast enough to get him out of Impel Down before Luffy decided to pull a stupid and do it himself. Because he would. She knew he would. Because she still knew him, even after all these years.
Being a part of the Revolutionary Army, agents were forbidden from contacting anyone outside their trusted communications channels. Even passing on a message through her own communication network was considered a breach of conduct. Ace and Luffy probably didn't even know she was alive, or that Sabo was alive. But then again...Sabo didn't even know Ace and Luffy existed.
'Sir, if we don't act first, your son is gonna put himself in danger,' She remembered arguing with her leader. Something she never would've dared to do as a child. 'If he dies trying to break Roger's son out of Impel Down, then -'
'You are certain that will be his next course of action?'
'Of course, sir, Luffy and Ace are bond brothers. Same as he and Sabo. Luffy would drop everything to save his Naka-'
'Evidence serves to the contrary.'
'Are you kidding me?!' Dragon threw her a stern look. Y/N winced. 'A-all due respect, sir, but the whole reason Enies Lobby happened is because Luffy was looking to rescue a crewmate.'
'A crewmate who also happens to be a valuable asset,' Dragon noted. 'The last scholar of Ohara capable of reading the Poneglyphs.'
'That's not why he did it, and you know it.'
'Do I?'
You would, if you any spent time with your son. Y/N knew better than to say that retort out loud. Instead, she said: 'Sir, the first orders you ever gave me were to protect the secrets you'd hidden on Goa. Ace may no longer be a secret, but if we don't act, Luffy's cover will be blown, too.'
'Portgas D Ace has nothing to do with your orders.' Dragon said sternly. 'Your request is denied.'
'But Sir-!'
'Our mission is to free the people. Not one man,' The man's eyes were sharp as flint and harder than bedrock. 'Your request is denied, Y/N. Let. It. Go."
And he was right. Y/N hated to say it, or even to think it, if only to herself. But Dragon was right. The resources required to ensure success, either infiltrating Impel Down or foiling his transport to Marineford, would likely ruin their chances completely. If they were to fail, their forces would be wiped out. Their plans for the Reverie would be compromised. And the Revolution could not afford that...not even for the sake of her friend.
The Army's mission was to free the people. Not one man. Dragon was right. She knew. He told her to let it go, and she tried. Tried to fight other battles and go on other missions with Koala and Hack, and Sabo. -But she was off her game. Getting knocked by blades and bullets, she should've been able to dodge. Stealing more files from outposts than they'd actually need. Striking too hard and accidentally killing a few enemy soldiers. Something Hack most definitely disapproved of. Koala pinched her cheeks and tugged on her ears. Tying bandages too tight and making new bruises when Y/N scrambled for excuses. Hack even noted how he sensed her Chakras were out of balance or something.
But the worst part of it was Sabo. At team meetings, he would keep sneaking glances at her. Even when she stood on his left side, where he couldn't see, and his scar left no sign of any eyebrows furrowing in concern - she could still sense it from him. It was in the way he stood close enough to brush her shoulders in the hallway. Or the way he'd play with her fingers under the table. It had started out as a habit to help him sit still during class when they were little. But now, she knew it was a reassuring gesture. Something he did to reassure himself they were both okay. - Which meant he was picking up on the fact that she was not, in fact, okay. And that was a problem.
What she didn't expect what just how big of a problem it would grow to become.
It happened when she was going to Dragon's office, having just gussied up the courage to argue with him about this whole Ace debacle (again). She'd just bypassed Sabo and Koala in the officer's lobby, she caught hold of the whispers in the halls.
'Hey, check it out, the News Coo just arrived,'
'Eh, Hack-san, you better take a look at this,'
'Hm? New on the war, I presume.'
'Yea. It's finally over. The only reported casualties were Whitebeard, the Emporer, and -' Y/N's stomach twisted. '-Fire Fist Ace.'
Every drop of lifeblood in her body immediatley sank to the floor. Y/N's knees shook. The world spun around her. She couldn't think, could barely breathe. Y/N scrambled to clutch the nearest wall for support to keep her upright.
Ace, Ace, no- She gasped. Her eyes burned. Like she was drowning in salt water all over again. the corridor blurred around her. Only she wasn't in a hallway anymore. She was looking up from the bottom of the ocean as someone else's corpse floated above her. Corpses. Y/N clasped a hand over her mouth in an effort to contain her sobs. Ace, Luffy - oh, Luffy....
The headline staring her in the face was more than proof enough. That freckled face. That mane of tangled hair. That wicked smirk pressed ear to ear on the front page of the News Coo - that was him.
That's when she heard it.
A voice screamed - a howling cry of anguish and agony. Y/N's heart seized in her chest.
Sabo.
That's when it all went to shit.

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.

Most of these shows have closed captioning, which is why I’ve picked soap2day. Planet Earth is the only one that doesn’t. I did not include Dynasties and Dynasties II because each episode only features one species.

Part II
When you found out that you were selected to attend Top Gun you couldn’t be more ecstatic. While you had graduated from the Naval Academy at the top of your class, this was a completely different honor.
You were about to be training and instructed alongside some of the greatest aviators the Navy has ever had. This fact alone was enough to send you into a spiral, but nothing—nothing could compare to the thirteen weeks you would spend in Fightertown, USA.
Sure, you were focused and dedicated to your assignment, but was it so wrong to be looking forward to a few months on the California coast while in the best shape of your life with some of the most attractive people you’ve ever seen?

Weeks had gone buy since you had first arrived at North Island, training more tiresome and grueling than ever. For a strange reason unknown to all of you, your training had been extended for an additional three weeks with a three week break in the middle.
 Rumors were they were bringing in a special task force that required your time and air space. Whether this was true or not had yet to be determined. But one thing that you could guarantee was that you would love the late nights at the Hard Deck without the regret of a hangover while waking up at 5a.m. for morning training.
Pulling into the gravel lot you began to feel the buzz of the Hard Deck as the evening crowd had begun to pile in. As you walked into the crowded bar you couldn’t help but feel that there were more people here than usual.
“Hey Penny!” you called as you approached the bar.
“Hi Y/N, what can I get you sweetheart?” she replied sweetly.
“Just the usual.”
You let your eyes wander around you as you stood still, leaning against the bar. You couldn’t help but notice a group of men in the corner by the darts. While they had their service khakis on you couldn’t quite place their faces. As you continued watching you slightly laughed to yourself as the one guy covered his friends eyes who yet managed to hit three dead-on bullseyes in a row. As they turned around you examined their faces, they seemed older, not by much but enough that their features had hardened. They certainly were easy on the eyes, you wouldn’t mind staring for a little longer.
Your attention was pulled away as Penny placed a simple vodka soda in front of you, her usual look of disgust evident. You couldn’t help but chuckle at her response, already familiar with her thoughts on your drink of choice.
“Haha what? I can get drunk and stay hydrated at the same time!” you argued.
“That’s disgusting—and also not how that works. I rather you take shots of vodka than sip on that like a psychopath” she laughed.
You just grinned at her before your attention was drawn to a new group of aviators walking by, again—no one that you knew.
“Pen—”
“Special mission or something,” she replied before you could even finish forming your question.
You nodded understandingly before grabbing your glass and starting to stand taller compared to your previous position of leaning on the bar top.
“Well I’m gonna see if I can find some of my people, I’ll catch you later Pen.”
She gave you a small wave before returning her attention to the many people who you had failed to notice occupied the space around you at the bar.
 Walking past the bar to the pool table you were relieved to see a few of your friends and the rest of your classmates.
A chorus of “y/c/s” eased your nerves as you began to feel more at home.
You weren’t necessarily an introvert, you just appreciated having people you knew around. Not to say that you couldn’t talk up any stranger placed in front of you, because you certainly could--maybe just not tonight…maybe.
“Y/N, finally! I was getting ready to call you” your friend Vanessa called, or as she went by Aries.
“Yeah hey Aries, got caught up at home for a second. Do you happen to know anything about this special mission?” you asked after embracing her in a hug.
“Not really, but I do know that I do not mind the sight” she trailed off, subtly waving at the pair by the darts you saw earlier.
All of a sudden you were interrupted by a tap on your shoulder. You whipped your head around to see Natasha Trace, call sign Phoenix.
Your first time meeting Phoenix was after you graduated the Academy, you had been stationed with her overseas. She was like the older sister you never had, with years of experience ahead of you she always encouraged you to go after what you wanted.
“Oh my god, Trace? It’s been years what the fuck! How are you?” you exclaimed, barreling into her for a hug.
“I’m good Y/C/S, what are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing, thought you already went through Top Gun.”
The realization dawned upon Phoenix, being called to Top Gun was a major goal in your career that you had been working towards.
“No shit, I’m so proud of you,” she responded.
“Haha Thanks! But what about you, special mission huh?”
She gave you a confused look.
“You know people talk,” you clarified.
“Right…uhm yeah. They called back a few of us for training.”
As if on cue, the pair that you and Aries had been eyeing walked up to the group.
“Going to introduce us to your friends Phoenix?” The blonde spoke up, eyeing you up and down in the process.
You didn’t shy away from his lingering eyes; you liked a challenge.
“Guys, this is Y/N Y/L/N, also known as Y/C/S. Y/N this is Coyote and Bagman.”
“Hangman,” he was quick to correct.
Aries walked over, amused by the attention of the older pilots.
“Hangman, this is Aries,” you introduced.
“Aries,” he greeted, a warm smile gracing his lips as he took in the way her uniform hugged her body in all the right places.
Goodness, you could cut the sexual tension between the two of them with a knife.
Phoenix grabbed your arm and began to drag you towards the bar,
“C’mon let’s leave them be, there’s some friends I want you to meet.”
You turned back to look at Aries, smiling to yourself as she bent over the pool table slightly, giving Hangman and Coyote a view they wouldn’t want to miss before sharing a knowing look with one another.
Aries had quickly looked in your direction for approval to which you just gave her a thumbs up. She was going to have a fun night.
Phoenix pulled you up to the bar where it seemed more pilots had entered since you were last there a few minutes ago.
“Hey boys,” she called out.
A group of men turned their heads in your direction. You recognized a few from various pictures on Nat’s instagram, Garcia and Fitch, and of course Bradshaw. There was also another aviator that you hadn’t seen before.  He wore dated glasses, could’ve been straight from the 1980s. Despite that, he was cute. They were all attractive, but he caught your attention the most.
“Wow, Y/L/N? No shit, what are you doing here?” Bradshaw laughed, pulling you into a big hug as you approached the group.
“What do you think old man?” you laughed as you pulled away, silently greeting the rest of the group with a witty smile and slight head nod.
“Hmmh these new rookies got some spirit” Fitch laughed, the rest of the group nodding in amused agreement, including Mr.Glasses.
“And you are?” you asked him? Your direct nature often came off as a tad bit abrasive. He looked a little flustered before adjusting the frame of his glasses and extending a hand out towards you.
“Lt. Robert Floyd ma’am, but you can call me Bob.”
“Lt. Floyd” you repeated back to him, a blush covering the both of your cheeks as your hands pulled apart.
“Well, Aries and I planned on making a drinking game out of darts, you guys wanna join? Well that if you elderly can hang, it’s getting kind of close to your bedtime isn’t it Grandpa Rooster,” you teased.
The group followed you over to where Aries was already leaning on the edge of the bar by the darts with Hangman and Coyote, Hangman’s arm wrapped loosely around her waist as he leaned down to whisper in her ear, earning a giggle before she lightly shoved at his chest.
“There you areeee” Aries dragged out, slightly stumbling over to you.
“Did you drink without me” you teased, the answer was obvious, but you and Aries always messed around.
“I would never,” she giggled, falling back into Hangman’s grasp as he gave a confident smile to his teammates who had joined the group.
“Alright then, Penny, a round of tequila please!” you exclaimed.
Penny lined the shots on the bar, everyone grabbing a glass and cheering to each other while trying to keep all the liquor in the small glasses.
 You raised your glass to Bob, giving him a warm smile as you shot your drink back. Bob followed, taking his shot without the aid of salt and limes, giving you a wink and a toothy grin as he set his glass down.
You could already tell that this was going to be a long night.

In this game we had the luxury of being able to draw backgrounds on paper and scan them giving us a greater range. This was my first background test of a cartographer's cabin painted in gouache. Peter Chan was a fiend with color markers and we ended up doing a lot of the backgrounds in marker as it was much quicker than painting.

A Tale as Old As Time

When I was growing up, my mother told me that fairytales were inspired by true, real-life stories. My imagination went wild, I was ecstatic that my beloved Cinderella, Ariel, and best of all Belle truly existed. That the magical world of Disney was our reality, that everyone received their happy ever after. When I was a little older, I understood her meaning. The magic Disney incorporated into our favorite animated movies wasn’t real, but in the past there probably was a poor servant girl who fell in love with a “prince.” There are various retellings of Aladdin. If you research other cultures, there are numerous folktales of “animal brides and grooms.” Ordinary girls who fall for cursed creatures and break their spells. Sometimes in the stories, the cursed creatures themselves, the “beasts,” fall for the “beauty” and become a better person. They were tales as old as time.

Several years ago, I was watching an episode of “Mysteries at the Museum,” featuring a segment with a portrait of a man and woman from the Renaissance period. The striking couple was dressed eloquently as nobles, but the man’s appearance had a unique characteristic: his face and body were covered in long hair. The host introduced the man as Petrus Gonsalvus, who was known throughout Europe as the “man of the woods.” On hearing Petrus and his wife Catherine, the lady featured in the portrait, perhaps inspired one of our most beautiful fairytales, my heart skipped a beat. Could it be? My Belle and Beast?!?!?! I was transfixed by the program, finding it bittersweet.
Born on the Canary Islands in 1537, Petrus suffered from what was then known as “Werewolf Syndrome.” It is now known as hypertrichosis. A genetic disorder, in the days of Renaissance, the child was viewed as a beast. When he was ten years old, Petrus was sold (possibly by his own parents) and brought to the French king, Henry II, and was gifted to the royal. Believed to be a talking monkey, for a time, he was kept in a cage and fed raw meat and animal feed…Until the king realized Petrus was intelligent. This could be an experiment, to turn a beast into a man! Petrus grew into a man, polished and articulate, educated, and he possessed a gentle soul. The court appreciated his talents, but continued to look upon him as a beast and a social attraction for their amusement.

When King Henry II died, his wife Queen Catherine de Medici – a woman infamous for her cruelty and coldness – inherited Petrus and decided that it was time for Petrus to marry and to have children. The idea was to produce further “beasts” for the court. In keeping with tradition amongst nobility, a marriage was arranged. The bride-to-be was named Catherine Raffelin and little is known about her except her rare beauty, and that she didn’t meet Petrus until the wedding day. Rumor had it, on their wedding night, Catherine fainted from fear. Catherine eventually overcame her terror when she discovered Petrus was a gentle soul, and a friendship developed between the two.

The couple was considered an oddity at court, but the queen was pleased when Petrus and Catherine had children, and four of their children had hypertrichosis. After the death of Queen Catherine de Medici, Petrus and Catherine and their children were shunned by the French court and traveled through Europe, presenting themselves as entertainment for various kingdoms. Petrus and Catherine’s children who were deemed “beasts” were taken from their parents and given to other royals as pets. Throughout the years, through all of the trials and tribulations, Petrus and Catherine remained together, side by side. They finally made their home in Italy, and the last mention of Petrus was in 1617, when he attended his grandchild’s christening. It is believed he died in 1618, and was denied a Christian burial since he was still not considered human. Catherine’s death is acknowledged to be in 1623. Their graves’ location is unknown.
            Petrus and Catherine themselves are largely forgotten by contemporary audiences, but they left a lasting impression on the world. In the 18th century, two versions of the French fairytale, Beauty and the Beast, complete with magic, curses, and true love breaking spells, was published and they later became the inspiration for the famous animated Disney classic and other renditions.
  The short segment about Petrus and Catherine on “Mysteries at the Museum” piqued my interest, and I had to know more. Did they love each other? Well, there is no way to know for certain what Petrus and Catherine felt for one another. However, the portrait that remains of the couple, shows Petrus and Catherine standing side by side, and Catherine’s hand is resting on Petrus’ shoulder. From my research, such a gesture shown in artwork was a sign of affection in those days, suggesting Catherine did care about Petrus. And she may have been the only one in the world who was able to see him for the man he was.

2023 Game of the Year Post
Looking back, I was surprised to see how few "new" games I had played this year. But two of them were absolutely excellent so I'm going to talk about them a little.
In February, a game I was expecting to be good showed true greatness, and, in mid-November, a black-and-white indie touched my heart.
[Spoilers for In Stars and Time/Octopath Traveler II to follow.]
Let me start by talking about In Stars and Time/ISAT.
ISAT is a gay game about timeloops. The aloof but amiable rogue Siffrin sees their sanity stretched like a stick of used chewing gum as the fighter repeatedly chickens out on confessing his love for them and sincere heartfelt moments of human connection become rote scenes he must perform.

Throughout the process, Siffrin uses humor to deflect from serious emotional questions and eventually starts drifting away from the group during conversations. The specific character traits of 1) serial people-pleaser, 2) depressed person, and 3) funnyjokespun person who at times used humor to deflect from those issues was a little too specific in a way that hit in an emotionally relevant way.
Even more than that was the way it toyed with my patience as a player. I'm what I would describe as very good at games with repetitive tasks. Like, my tactics-loving friend and I have been doing a co-op playthrough of Tactics Ogre, and I was the enby who ultimately chose to be responsible for grinding Galgastani CF to recruit ultimate goth girl Cressida. It took hours of repeating the same battle and just babysitting the game for hours at a time. Sure I'd be willing to read through heart-to-heart events repeatedly to make the Siffrin's friends happy. I'd do it once, twice, even a fifth time. But my persistence is not bottomless.
In Stars and Time read me perfectly.
I did end up skipping or avoiding those events once the game stopped being a combat RPG and started being a visual novel/monkey island-style adventure in Act 4. I did start zoning through particular events once they happened more than 10 times. My patience did give way, though not to the extent of the protagonist Siffrin when they suffered a meltdown. And this happened right around the time when Siffrin started putting real distance between them and their friends. It took me to a dark place with the character in a way that made the catharsis at the end so worth it.
All of it went towards really effectively communicated the game's point of how it's worth it to talk to your friends about your problems.

The other game that moved me this year was also built around repeating and growing. It was about throwing yourself at the wall over and over again, with a little more force, a little more refined strategy, a little more panache and willingness to take risks. And about getting it just right, finally. This was my experience with Octopath Traveler 2
So, first of all, strategizing in OT2 kicks ass. Like the Bravely games of yore, this game nerfs the most broken tools (i.e. the Hunter's patience) from the first game, but gives the player new broken tools that synergize in new, exciting ways. And critically, it then throws enemies at you that can take it all and still be a challenge. (Sea of Stars did not do this last part.)
Got used to using someone's primary job for a lethal combo setup? Well guess what, primary jobs are now banned! Got a 6-attack strike with a killer legendary weapon that'll break any monster? Guess what, that weapon you used to get the break is now no longer the zombie dragon's weakness! Spent all your time building up your favorite 4 in an 8-character party? Guess who's gonna handle the superboss' second HP bar?
For a single-player game, it legitimately felt like I was experiencing a design that had been built to anticipate the player's combat choices on a meta level and would only let the door open for solutions that were suitably intricate and clever. Aside from superbosses, the game wasn't extraordinarily difficult, but it still left me constantly scrambling through my toolkit of HP, MP, turns, latent power, items, collectable monsters, and money mid-battle to find a solution to pick any given boss' lock. As a turn-based combat RPG, OT2 killed it.
And that wasn't even the strongest point.
The character stories in Octopath Traveler one were, on a basic level, enjoyable, and were engaging enough that the game's art, soundtrack, and deep turn-based combat could combine to make a great game. Octopath II ups the storytelling game significantly, offering nonlinear chapter order, story-focused chapters that end without a boss fight, and a cast that's generally very well written and played brilliantly by the English vocal cast. The positive impression I had of the game after the first ten hours gave way to a wowed one as characters started to interact, showcasing entertaining personal dynamics and tugging at the strings of a looming, bigger mystery. The climactic arc, Journey for the Dawn, ties all eight chapters together and presents an incredibly satisfying and at times emotionally wrenching finale.

But also, mystery arc main plot removed, the world of OT2 has so much character. There's a whole questline where you sit through a court hearing and then have to investigate the mystery around town to show up and avoid a wrongful verdict with a key testimony or piece of evidence. Secret princess/gardener lesbian subplots and eldritch stuffed toys are just some of the things that exist in the background.
The story about getting it just right wasn't just a player experience. It was also the meta narrative - writing in the first game wasn't weak by any means, but the writing in the second game is just an inarguable improvement. Combat in the first game pitched juicy fastballs that were well-scaled to my play experience, but this baby kept tossing out monster curves and tricky sliders.
I think creative perfection is a myth, because it's always possible to improve. Octopath Traveler II shows how, and that's why it's my game of the year.

Nietzsche's Eternal Return (to Monkey Island)

Theme The person who is returning to Monkey Island here is, most obviously, Ron Gilbert. He got him brand back. Go Ron! And, look, I was skeptical. I mean, I was, above all, cautiously optimistic! But I was keeping my skeptic hat on the coat rack next to my hoodie, you know? I said the philosophy of The Secret of Monkey Island is "cheerful nihilism," and I stand by that. But Ron Gilbert's nihilism is not always cheerful. Or, actually, I think he's usually having a good time, but it often feels at my expense. How badly did I want him to take me back to the first series I ever loved?
I am on record as having never liked the ending of Monkey Island 2, which is the last Monkey Island game Ron directed (though he apparently had some peripheral involvement in Tales of Monkey Island). I am also on record as having haaaaaaaaaated the ending of his last adventure game, Thimbleweed Park. Ron likes a cop-out ending. Frankly you should know that by now - don't play Return to Monkey Island if you aren't prepared for a cop-out ending. It's what Ron does. And sometimes... sometimes it's a deliberate rug-pull. Sometimes he's laughing at you for expecting the ending to be good.
The Secret of Monkey Island's ending was a bit of a piss-take. It was short, it was abrupt, it rendered the entire plot up to that point irrelevant. Its instant replays and Blimp-cams and snarky final lines made it a parody of a video game ending. But, parody or no, it was an ending! It was a climax. You returned to the starting point, blew up the villain, and reunited with the love interest. Even in air quotes, it was the way you expect stories to end.
Monkey Island 2 intentionally denied you that ending. Refused closure. Told you all the events you just witness, and the events of the previous game, may never have happened. I originally played the game on its "easier puzzles" mode, and, when I got to the end, thought there must be a proper ending if you play normally, but nope. Spent a solid year stuck on Part II, refusing to get a hint book, before finally getting back to the ending, and thbthbthbthbthb. Fuck me for caring I guess.
The joke of The Secret of Monkey Island is Monkey Island having a secret is brought up in Part I, so you expect it to be relevant, given the game's title and all, and then, once the plot kicks into gear, you get focused on Elaine's kidnapping and the rescue mission and confronting LeChuck, and it's not til sometime after you finish that you think, "Wait... they never told us the secret." I don't think it's even mentioned after Part I.
Monkey Island 2 never lets you forget its macguffin. You are searching for the treasure of Big Whoop. No one knows what it is, but it's what you're after. There is no distraction, no romantic subplot that takes over your attention. Hell, the game makes it clear that Guybrush's obsession with being the kind of famous pirate who would look for Big Whoop has ruined his relationship and annoys his friends. The game hinges on Big Whoop. But, once again, you never find out what it is, and it's not an "oh that's funny" moment that hits you an hour after you play; it is, as Cobain would say, a denial.
And then Gilbert left LucasArts, the series was continued by other developers, and whatever resolution he had in mind for the MI2's putative "cliffhanger" ending was left to our imaginations for thirty years. Until now.
So the question is not whether, in Return to Monkey Island, you will finally find the secret. You oughtta know you're not finding that secret. The question is: which kind of cop-out will Ron give you?
And what Ron has done is kind of amazing: he has found a cop-out ending that is, for the first time in the series, emotional. He has made the denial of closure resonant. He has gone meta that quiet, knowing way that most Neil Gaiman stories are meta: yes, this is a fun story about pirates, but it's also a story about stories about pirates. This is Guybrush, the guy who couldn't shut up about the greatness of his adventures in Monkey Island 2, telling his son a story. He's not telling it because the ending is exciting, because the Secret of Monkey Island is so mind-blowing once revealed. He's telling it to relate to his son.
The ending is a big nothing. It's a joke. Elaine walks up when it's over and says "you tell that story differently every time." When your son presses you to tell him what the secret is, the game gives you six dialogue options with different answers. It doesn't matter what the secret is. And, unlike when a young Guybrush found the empty chest of Big Whoop, this time he knows it. He has a family and a storied life. That's the treasure a lifetime on the seas brought him.
Some people hate this ending. But, maybe for the first time, I'm on Ron's side of a polarizing ending. Monkey Island has always made me laugh; even the mixed bags that are Escape and Tales find chuckles somewhere. And the developers who are not Ron Gilbert have attempted pathos before; Tales went so far as to let Guybrush die - like, not fake his death like in Curse but legit die - but the results were mixed. This is the first time Monkey Island has given me feelings. Ron Gilbert, the man who told stories deep-fried in irony, who gave me the finger for expecting them to resolve, finally, all these years later, gave me feelings. Maybe he could only do it after thirty years, once a sarcastic parody of a pirate game starts to feel nostalgic simply because it's been in your life so long. But he did it.
Go Ron.
Design The clever thing about Return's structure is how it apes, subverts, and expands upon those of Ron's other two entries. You spend a decent chunk of this game tracing the footsteps of Secret: Part I is on Mêlée Island, with the Scumm Bar and Otis locked in jail and its twisty forest surveyed with weird maps; Part II is on a ship to Monkey Island where you have to recreate the potion that took you there in the first game; Part III is on Monkey Island itself, with its banana tree on the beach and its giant monkey head and its incredible view from the mountaintop; and Part IV seems to be wrapping things up, as you hurry back to Mêlée because the place you needed to be all along is back where you started.
And just when you think the game is wrapping up... it turns into Monkey Island 2.
Suddenly you have a ship and a map of the surrounding seas and a whole bunch of new islands to check out. It's that enormous sprawl from Part II of LeChuck's Revenge.
It's a bit cheeky to get to what feels like the end and think, "huh, I guess this game is a tight 7 hours," and then run aground on the game's surprise second half.
The player's (presumed) familiarity with the series becomes a playground for the designers. You expect insult swordfighting, so you laugh when LeChuck gives you two comebacks in a row and then just punches you. (It's also cute that Guybrush and Carla the Swordmaster can only converse while swordfighting.) You already know the potion that takes you to Monkey Island requires a pressed human skull, so of course this time it's Murray; "pressed" is his default emotion! You expect Guybrush to fall off the side of the plateau and get bounced back up by a rubber tree, so you laugh when Guybrush keeps jumping up and down on the bit that broke before only to have it stay solid, and then later when he gets kicked off you think "ahahahaaa, he's going to land on the rubber tree!" only to find him twisted and mangled having landed on... a rubber tree stump.
LeChuck's Revenge was such a departure from the first game that you can see, in Curse, how the new developers wanted to course correct. This is a trend, I've found: an IP comes out that is widely beloved; the first sequel is the same team doing something weirder and more ambitious, and is met with divided response; then the series it taken over by fans of the original who, instead of being weird and ambitious, ignore the first sequel's innovations and turn the original entry into a formula. I guess what I'm saying is, much as I enjoy it, Curse of Monkey Island is the Jurassic Park III of the series. (See also: Myst.)
First island: map, ship, crew. Then a stretch on a boat. Then a new Island. Then a (usually short and lackluster) confrontation with LeChuck. There will be some variant of insult swordfighting. You will have to decipher an obtuse map. Everything that made the first game unique will be repeated. This is true of Curse, and much of it holds for Escape and Tales.
Return knows this formula has been established, knows you have expectations. And anywhere the player has expectations, they can be confounded.
Character The Guybrush of Return to Monkey Island feels like a magic trick. He manages to feel continuous with every previous iteration of the character, none of whom felt continuous with each other. He blends the naïveté of Secret's Guybrush with the amorality of LeChuck's Revenge Guybrush, the wiseassery of Curse's Guybrush with the dipshittery of Escape's Guybrush. (I don't really remember what Tales' Guybrush was like.) You can see how this guy(brush) grew from the straight man of the first game, chilled out from the asshole of the second game, wised up from the fool of the fourth game. The series' inconsistencies now seem like one person in different phases of his life.
Who Guybrush is is more relational than in games past. His marriage to Elaine (properly written as the most competent person in the room, finally) seems like it could be in danger, as she becomes steadily more aware of how amorally Guybrush is acting in pursuit of The Secret. LeChuck is framed for the first time as a foil for Guybrush, as the two start to resemble each other the more obsessed each becomes with beating the other to the prize. (One character says of their enmity, "you deserve each other.")
These are, of course, both handwaved in the end. Elaine confronts Guybrush with his misdeeds, but just asks whether The Secret can possibly be worth all the questionable things he's done. (She's not fussed that her husband is amoral, she married a friggin' pirate.) The LeChuck confrontation is a big nothing because, right when you're about to confront him, the cop-out rug-pull happens. Guybrush not telling his son what The Secret is shows that he clearly learned the right lesson and did not turn into LeChuck. The game simply elides the inevitable confrontation-and-epiphany moment; why does the game need to show it to you if you already know it's coming?
And it's just nice to see Elaine and Guybrush... be together. They get together at the end of the first game and are broken up in the second, and she spends the next three getting damseled over and over. Serialized stories are always bringing romantic pairings together and splitting them up, because reuniting is easier than the drama of maintaining a relationship. (I mean, how many times have Nathan Drake and Elena broken up between games?) The moments where you get a sense of Guybrush and Elaine's relationship, how little time they get to spend together because he's a pirate and she's a professional do-gooder, how he adores her like a goddess and she adores him like a puppy.
Beats the hell out of Tales' ill-advised love triangle with a "human-again" LeChuck.
On another note, it is interesting that, for all the effort the game makes to not contradict the canon of the non-Gilbert games, it doesn't mine them for content, either. Murray is the only character from Curse onward to make an appearance. Morgan LeFlay got a passing mention in mine. But there's no Cap'n Blondebeard, no Edward Van Helgen or Cutthroat Bill, no Ozzie Mandrill, no Pegnose Pete. Meanwhile, seemingly everyone from Monkey Island 1 & 2 show up. There are the obvious ones - The Voodoo Lady (finally given a name), Wally, Stan. But there's also Otis and Carla, and the Scumm Bar cook, and Herman Toothrot is in a cave, Kate Capsize gets a mention, I'm pretty sure "Apple Bob" is the skeleton who pops his head off in the first game (now voice by Rob Paulsen, great choice), Cobb is still in the bar with his Ask Me About LOOM button ("I'm more button than man")... come to think of it, I think even the LOOM seagull who stole your map piece in MI2 gets a cameo. Narrative economy, I guess - if you find skeletons on Terror Island, they might as well be the Men of Low Moral Fiber, right?
While it would be interesting to see Ron and Dave Grossman's take on some of those characters, many of whom have, I would say, unrealized potential - they do a bang-up job with Murray - it's clear this is about wrapping up the story they started back in 1990. It may be improbable that half the people you meet are people you already know, but... it's good to see them all the same.
