Motorsport pioneer Maria Teresa de Filipps, the first female Formula One driver, has died aged 89.

The Italian driver, from Lombardy, participated in five Grand Prix across 1958 and 1959, making her debut at the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix in a privateer Maserati. Across her three Grand Prix starts, her highest placing was tenth at the Belgian Grand Prix that same year, though she failed to score any points.

de Filipps was appointed Vice President of the Club of Former Grand Prix Drivers in 1997, and in 2004 founded the Maserati Club, later becoming its Chairperson.

This week on our dive into the F1 archives, we’re putting the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix under the microscope.

Contested at the Montjuïc Street Circuit in Barcelona, you may know that it was won by Jochen Mass, with Jacky Ickx and Carlos Reutemann rounding out the top three… but today we’re focusing on the driver who finished in sixth place.

Italian driver, and more notably the second female driver to compete in Formula 1, Lella Lombardi.

Lombardi is still to this day the most successful female driver in Grand Prix history, having scored just half a point at the 1975 Spanish GP, as the race was red flagged after 29 laps. Her career spanned 12 races across 17 entries, driving for March, RAM, and Williams. Her last race was the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, where she finished twelfth.

17th October 1989 – The Sword and Lion, Oxford

“Okay and last question for the sports round,” A hushed washed over the pub, as the groups sat round almost every table leaned back in their seats to try and hear better. “Who is the only British female Formula One driver?”

The hush was replaced by a sea of confused murmurs.

“A female F1 driver?” One patron exclaimed in complete disbelief.

“There’s never been a woman in F1 it’s a trick question!” Another huffed with their arms folded across their chest.

“The answer, was Divina Galica. She took part in three race weekends, the 1976 British Grand Prix and the Argentine and Brazilian Grand Prix in 1978, though she never qualified for those races. She also competed in four Winter Olympics as a skier”

7th April 2010 – Brands Hatch Circuit

Rain came pouring down at the race track on a very cold, grey Spring day. It was the middle of the week, so the circuit sat empty, bar a handful of people in offices in the main pit building doing paperwork.

The Desiré Wilson grandstand sat right at the end of the start/finish straight, looking across Paddock Hill. As it got pelted with rain some looked out of their windows at the grandstand, and let out a small sigh before continuing on with their work.

Better known for her career in sportscar racing than her one race entry at the 1980 British Grand Prix, Desiré Wilson had won the race at Brands Hatch in the 1980 British Formula One championship. While completely separate from the series it was named after, it was still an astounding enough achievement that merited a grandstand being named in her honour.

Rain continued to fall for the rest of the day, and as the last of the office staff left, the grandstand stayed where it always had been, looking out over the circuit.

The fifth and still final female driver to compete in Formula 1 was Italian racer Giovanna Amati. She signed with Brabham for the 1992 season, alongside Eric van der Poele from Belgium.

She first drove an F1 car the year prior, driving 30 laps in a Benetton at a private test, prior to signing with Brabham. Amati became the first female driver in twelve years to take part in a Grand Prix weekend at the first race of the season in South Africa.

Her career was sadly short lived, as she failed to qualify in the first three races of the 1992 season, which resulted in Brabham replacing her with Damon Hill, who also failed to qualify in the next five races.

Amati had a brief spell in sportscar racing, before her retirement. She briefly worked as a television commentator and wrote columns for various Italian motorsport publications.

It would be another 24 years before Formula 1 would see another female driver compete in a Grand Prix weekend, when British driver Susie Wolff drove in first practice for Williams at the 2014 British Grand Prix (she went on to drive in three more practice sessions before announcing her retirement from racing).

This weekend sees the driver-less streak broken again as Amy McDonald will drive for Renault in the first practice session at this week’s Spanish Grand Prix in Valencia.

It is unclear if or even when Formula One will see a female driver permanently racing in the sport. Attitudes towards female drivers have come a long way thanks to the likes of W Series, and Formula 1’s own feeder series F1 Academy, though many questions still remain at just how competitive a female Formula 1 driver could be, if one was ever given the chance.

FACTS AND STATS: Verstappen matches Alonsos title and win tally after claiming championship in Suzuka

For the second race in succession, rain played a major role in how things played out in Japan on Sunday. Unlike Singapore, however, this Grand Prix ended with Max Verstappen crowned champion for a second time – and the parallels with a certain Spaniard didn’t end there. Here’s our round-up of those and the other key numbers from Suzuka… Today was the first time a drivers' championship has been clinched at Suzuka since Sebastian Vettel in 2011. Verstappen’s 12th win of the season has put him within one of the single-season record set by Michael Schumacher in 2004 and Sebastian Vettel in 2013. REPORT: Verstappen crowned world champion with Japanese GP victory after late penalty for Leclerc Verstappen’s victory was Red Bull’s first win at Suzuka in hybrid era. Verstappen had never led a lap at Suzuka before today. It was the 32nd career win for Verstappen, which ties Fernando Alonso’s total. Verstappen surpassed 5,000 miles in the lead in his career today. READ MORE: Verstappen left feeling ‘very emotional’ as he becomes two-time F1 title winner With Perez following Verstappen home in second place, Red Bull took their fifth one-two finish of the season, the most they've ever scored in a single year. Perez scored consecutive podium finishes for the first time since Monaco and Azerbaijan. Perez had never previously finished in the top-six at Suzuka, having finished seventh on three previous occasions. Charles Leclerc’s fourth consecutive podium finish matches his longest career run, set twice in 2019, even though his five-second time penalty cost him second place in the race and ended his championship hopes. DRIVER OF THE DAY: Vettel gets your vote in final Suzuka outing Esteban Ocon’s P4 was Alpine's best result of 2022 to date. Lewis Hamilton’s P5 for Mercedes was his worst Suzuka result since he retired from the 2013 race. Today was Hamilton’s 306th start, putting him level with Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button for fourth on the all-time list. With Sebastian Vettel in P6, Aston Martin scored back-to-back top-six finishes - Lance Stroll was sixth last time out in Singapore. Vettel beat the Alpine of Fernando Alonso by just 0.011s. Alonso’s P7 secured his first points at Suzuka since finishing fourth for Ferrari in 2013. With P8, today was only the third time Mercedes’ George Russell has not finished in the top-five this year, but it was the second time in a row. Hey!! I love to rant about this so thanks for asking! <3

So in 2010 Mercedes made their return to F1 after buying Brawn GP, last year's champion team. (This was due to the Brawn car having an innovative piece of tech. I won't get into the specifics but it's super interesting stuff!) So Merc came in and made a midfield performing car. This wasn't really bad or odd by itself, the Brawn win was a bit of a fluke and the rules changed and so forth.

They had Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg driving for them and, with the power of hindsight, I firmly believe this was the most powerful driver line-up on the grid at the time until we got Nico and Lewis. Both Nico and Schumi would frequently do what Leclerc did with his car in 2020 - yeet that shitbox up into the points in qualifying and then hold up the pack and slowly drop down the order in the race. But let's not talk about the speed, the complete inability of the mercedes to show any straight line pace that made them a sitting duck for DRS, lets talk about the reliability.

Oh my god I have never seen cars with more gremlins but let's really focus in on the REAL hate crime here: Michael Schumacher's car in 2012. There were 20 races in 2012 and schumi dnf'd in 8, the majority because of gearbox problems beyond his control. At one point there were 3 DNFs in a row (admittedly, one of them due to his own mistake) At China the team didn't put his tyre on properly and it came off when he left the pits. In Canada he DNF'd because the DRS wing was stuck open and they couldn't close it. After a while it was just an absolute farce, like comical in a painful way. Schumacher's car was haunted. When he DID finish a race there was usually a problem in qualifying, a gear box penalty, or some drama in the pits.

And that's saying nothing of the way Brawn kept saying they were happy with his performance, the seat was entirely up to him. When Merc suddenly changed their mind and signed Lewis it was far too late in the season to find a good seat which, combined with the dismal season he had just had because of THEIR unreliable car and bad strategies, pretty much forced schumi into a second retirement with the press pissing themselves with joy that they'd finally proven he couldn't win without Ferrari cheat codes. Like, 2010-2012 schumi was not on the same level at 2000-2004 schumi by any means but he was NOT as bad at the final scores in 2012 would have you believe. He was still absolutely capable of podiums and wins and retired from podium positions multiple times because of merc's issues. You don't put a mediocre car on pole at Monaco when you're ready to retire. I am still mad about this I will never stop being mad about this Mercedes did my dad dirty. The fact that they went on to become the most stable, reliable team afterwards is just insult to injury.

Anyway <3 thank you for asking and letting me rant and I hope this is sufficient proof that not only am I not a mercedes stan but I possibly hold the biggest, most illogical grudge against them of anyone.

Got a question about Michael Schumacher and who from the current grid raced against him, so lets see :)

The older drivers debuted in 2001, so we will only look at Michael’s career from that year.

It’s long, so I will put it under the cut...

in 2001-2006 only Kimi and Fernando raced against him (*Fernando debuted in 2001, but wasn’t on the grid in 2002 as he was a test driver for Renault then).

2001: Kimi started his career in (Red Bull) Sauber and managed to score 9 points in his debut year, while Fernando started in Minardi and finished with no points (imagine a team like Williams now). Kimi moved to F1 from Formula Renault and Fernando from Formula 3000. Michael was World Champion for Ferrari.

2002: Kimi replaced Mika Hakkinen in McLaren after he’s decided to retire. He finished the year on 6th place with 24 points. (As I’ve mentioned before, Fernando didn’t participate in 2002). Michael was World Champion for Ferrari.

2003: Fernando is back on the grid with Renault. He won the race for the first time in Hungary and finished the season on 6th place with 55 points. Kimi won his firth race as well in Malaysia, which was his only win that year, but managed to get 91 points and finished second in championship. Michael was World Champion for Ferrari with 93 points.

2004: Both Kimi and Fernando stayed with their previous year’s teams. Kimi scored another win, but with 8 retirements, he’s only managed 45 points and 7th place. Fernando didn’t win a race, but got to 4th place in championship with 59 points. Michael was World Champion for Ferrari with 148 points before his team mate Rubens Barrichello with 114 points. This was Michael’s 7th and final title.

2005: Both Kimi and Fernando stayed with their previous year’s teams. If you are a fan of Kimi and Fernando this is the year to watch :) Both won 7 races - Fernando in Malaysia, Bahrain, San Marino, Europe (Nurburgring), France, Germany and China, while Kimi won in Spain, Monaco, Canada, Hungary, Turkey, Belgium and Japan. Only three other drivers won that year, Juan Pablo Montoya three times, Giancarlo Fisichella once and Michael once. Fernando won the championship with 133 points and Kimi was the runner-up with 112 points. Michael in Ferrari came third that year.

2006: Both Kimi and Fernando stayed with their previous year’s teams. Fernando won 7 races again, while Kimi didn’t win any. Michael was the main challenger for Fernando with 7 wins as well. However, at the end Fernando won the championship (his second and final title) with 134 points and Michael in Ferrari was the runner-up with 121 points.

Michael officially retired after the 2006 season, so Lewis and Seb who debuted in 2007 didn’t get to race him, until later. Lewis debuted in McLaren and Seb started his career in Toro Rosso in the middle of the season when he replaced Scott Speed. Also in 2007, Fernando moved to McLaren while Kimi replaced Michael in Ferrari where he won his single World Championship. Lewis was the runner up that year with only one point behind Kimi. In 2008 Fernando went back to Renault, while the others stayed where they were previous year. Lewis won his first title by one point (Is that Glock?! If you know you know!). In 2009 Seb moved to Red Bull while the other three stayed where they were. The championship winner was Jenson Button with Sebastian being runner up. Kimi took sabbatical and moved to try on rally.

2010: Michael is back with Mercedes. Lewis stayed with McLaren, Sebastian with Red Bull, while Fernando moved to Ferrari. Sebastian become World Champion with 5 wins and 256 points. Fernando was runner up with 5 wins and 252 points. Lewis scored 3 wins and with 240 points he finished on 4th place. Michael only got 72 points and no wins.

2011: Two more current drivers are joining F1. Sergio is debuting with Sauber while Daniel replacing Narain Karthikeyan in HRT in the middle of the season (Narain later returned for one race and Daniel stayed which meant he replaced Tonio Liuzzi then and then Liuzzi returned so Daniel replaced Narain again - well, crazy). Lewis, Sebastian, Fernando and Michael stayed in the teams from previous season. Sebastian won his second championship with 392 point when with an exception of one retirement he didn’t score lower than 4th place once. Fernando finished 4th with one win and 257 points, Lewis 5th with three wins and 227 points, Michael was 8th with 76 points. Rookies Sergio and Daniel finished 16th / 14 points and 27th / 0 points respectively.

2012: Kimi returned to F1 with Lotus F1 team. Lewis, Sebastian, Fernando, Sergio and Michael stayed in the teams from previous season. Daniel moved to Toro Rosso. This season had 6 World champions on the grid - Sebastian, Fernando, Kimi, Lewis, Michael and Jenson Button. Five of them actually finished the season in Top 5 - Sebastian won his third championship with 281 point and 5 wins, second was Fernando with 278 points and 3 wins, third was Kimi with 207 points and one win, fourth was Lewis with 190 points and 4 wins and fifth was Jenson. Michael only managed the score 49 points and only one podium for 3rd place in Valencia (European GP) which placed him on 13th final place. Sergio also scored podium (3rd place) in Canada and finished the season on 10th place with 66 points and finally Daniel only managed 10 points and his final standing was 18th place.

After the disappointing season 2012 Michael retired for the second time and for real and he was replaced by Lewis in Mercedes.
