Tyre preview: Alternative tyre allocation returns at Monza By Balazs Szabo on 31 Aug 2023, 15:42 For their home race at Monza, Formula One's tyre manufacturer Pirelli will bring the softest tyre compounds of their six-compound range with the alternative tyre allocation also making a return after the first test in Hungary. Following the incident-filled and action-packed Dutch Grand Prix, Formula One made the trip to Norther Italy's Monza that will play host to the Italian Grand Prix. While the track is usually referred to as the Temple of Speed, Pirelli will bring a bold tyre selection to Monza. The C3 will be used as P Zero White hard, C4 as P Zero Yellow medium and C5 as P Zero Red soft. These are the softest compounds in the Pirelli Formula 1 range, already nominated for five other race weekends so far this season, albeit mainly on street circuits or slow tracks like the Hungaroring. It will be spectacular to watch how the weekend unfolds as Pirelli will try out their Alternative Tyre Allocation that has already caused a stir in Hungary. The rule means that each driver will have just 11 sets of slick tyres (three Hard, four Medium and four Soft) at their disposal for the weekend. In qualifying, drivers can use only one type of compound per session (unless it's wet): in Q1 the Hard, in Q2 the Medium, and in Q3 the Soft. As for the race strategy, tyre degradation is usually quite low around the 5.8km Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Last year, there were no fewer than eight different strategies deployed by the top 10 finishers. Max Verstappen and George Russell (first and third respectively) opted for a single stop, while Charles Leclerc – who finished second – had already made two stops before a safety car towards the end of the race allowed all three drivers to stop again. The Italian Grand Prix is one of the races that has counted for every drivers’ championship since the very first competition in 1950. It has always been held in Monza with only one exception, when Imola hosted the race in 1980. Monza was inaugurated in 1922 and is one of the oldest tracks in the world still to be used, second only to Indianapolis. The team with the most victories at Monza is Ferrari (19 out of 72 total grands prix) while the drivers with the most wins are Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, on five each. Pirelli will remain in Monza after the Italian Grand Prix for a couple of days of testing with Alpine and Red Bull. The teams will take to the track on Tuesday and Wednesday after the race (5-6 September) to test prototype slick tyres. Pirelli's Motorsport Director Mario Isola commented: “As usual, the European Formula 1 season draws to a close in Monza: which is also Pirelli’s home event as our headquarters are just a few kilometres away from this iconic circuit. Monza is synonymous with speed, as its nickname of the ‘Temple of Speed’ capably demonstrates. To this day, it’s where the fastest race in the history of Formula 1 was held, with Michael Schumacher setting an unbeaten average race speed of 247.585 kph back in 2003. As a result, teams use the lowest possible aerodynamic downforce levels to favour top speed by reducing drag. Stability under braking and traction coming out of the two chicanes are the two key factors that challenge tyres most on this track, as well as the lateral loads exerted in the fast corners such as Parabolica (named after Michele Alboreto) and Curva Grande. After Hungary, Monza will be the second time that the Alternative Tyre Allocation (ATA) is trialled, which uses two fewer sets of tyres than the standard format. This offers a benefit in terms of CO2 saved both during production and transport, as well as giving teams and drivers a wider range of strategic option. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will continue as Mercedes' driver line-up for at least the next two years. Hamilton has signed a new contract that will extend his period with the team to 13 years and keep him in F1 well past his 40th birthday. And Russell, who joined Mercedes in 2022, has also signed a two-year deal. The move confirms pledges by Hamilton and team principal Toto Wolff that a new deal for the seven-time champion was only a matter of time this season. For Hamilton, it allows him to continue a quest for a record eighth world drivers' title, which both driver and team believe was robbed from them at the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Hamilton lost out to Red Bull's Max Verstappen after former FIA race director Michael Masi ignored the rules in operating a late-race safety car period. New 'more accessible' F2 car for 2024 follows F1's styling lead | Formula 2

The new chassis Formula 2 will use from next year has been revealed for the first time in the paddock at Monza. Dallara’s F2 2024 will replace the F2 2018, which is in its sixth year of service. Its design closely resembles the latest generation of F1 cars which followed the introduction of its new technical regulations last year. F2 said the design is intended to give junior drivers a close approximation of driving an F1 car, while also ensuring close racing. Particular attention has been paid to altering the cars’ steering system to make it accessible to a wider range of drivers, following concerns the previous design was poorly adapted for female racers. Tatiana Calderon, who raced in the series in 2019 and 2022 and found the car harder to handle than an F1 car, was chosen to shake down to F2 2024 at the Varano circuit in Italy last month. Development of the car will continue over the coming months. Reigning champion Felipe Drugovich is among those who will test the F2 2024 for Dallara. F2’s 11 teams are due to receive one example each of the new car in December. A further example will follow in January. In order to keep cost increases to a minimum, the car retains the same gearbox and 3.4-litre turbocharged V6 Mecachrome engine used by its predecessor. The FIA’s deputy president for sport, Robert Reid, said “a huge amount of work has been done by the FIA, Formula 2 and its partners to put together what is a truly impressive package focused on close racing, the latest safety technologies, even greater environmental sustainability and better accessibility for drivers than ever before. “This significant step will bring Formula 2 closer to the pinnacle of motor sport, ensuring that the next generation of drivers get the best possible preparation for the future and also put on a fantastic show for the fans around the world.” F2 CEO Bruno Michel described the new car as “powerful, challenging and safe”, and said it will “continue to provide great racing and a lot of overtaking opportunities, something that the fans expect from F2.” “It has been designed also to fit all types of drivers, taking into account FIA’s consideration regarding the steering effort,” he added. “This is obviously key to making our sport more inclusive, by enhancing our car’s driveability and comfort.” This article will be updated. Alf Romeo are set to run a special one-off livery for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix from the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Gone is their usual red and black configuration, with the dazzling tricolore of the Italian flag in its place. While they usually run the Italian flag colours on their rear wing, that design is now much more prominent across the main sidepod and engine cover, with the traditional red only glimpsed on the top of the car’s nose. F1 set for first fully dry race weekend in four months | 2023 Italian Grand Prix weather

Formula 1 is set for its first all-dry weekend of track action since May’s Miami Grand Prix with the trip to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. Each of the last eight rounds have seen at least one session in which the track was wet. The round preceding those was due to be the first of two events in Italy – but the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was cancelled due to flooding in and around the Imola circuit. It will be not only dry but quite warm this weekend at Monza, which is hosting the final round of the season which takes place in Europe. Both practice sessions on Friday will be held in the afternoon, meaning drivers will be facing air temperatures of 24C in first practice and 26C in second practice while the supporting Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships may be on track when it’s just 15C in the morning. There is no expectation of rain during either of F1’s sessions, although there will be north-blowing winds that could be as strong as 15kph. That means drivers will have a tailwind down the pit straight, but will go up against a headwind on the back straight. It will make the slipstream effect weaker on the run to turn one, but stronger entering Curva Parabolica. The weather will be almost identical for Saturday in terms of temperature and wind, with the F3 sprint race being held in cool 16C conditions but the rest of the day’s track action all taking place when it is 25C or higher. It will be 27C for F1 qualifying. Sunday will be the hottest day of the weekend, seeing temperatures of 17C for the support races, rising to 29C by the time the grand prix begins at 3pm local time. There is a chance of rain, but it is less than 20%, and the winds will be blowing more in a north-easterly direction which means there will be a headwind – and a chance to set up overtakes – between the second Lesmo and the Ascari chicane. The Hinwil-based outfit will run a striking livery at Monza, paying tribute to the launch of Alfa Romeo’s latest fuoriserie car, the new 33 Stradale. Featuring the gold accents of the new 33 Stradale – themselves a nod to its illustrious namesake, an icon of the 1960s and one of the most legendary cars of Alfa Romeo’s history – and the Italian flag’s tricolore on a field of black, the livery to be used in Monza will be one that will set fans’ hearts racing. In brief Lawson looking forward to contesting practice at Italian GP Having been called up last-minute to make his Formula 1 debut in last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix after Daniel Ricciardo was ruled out of action by a crash in practice, Liam Lawson will get to contest every track session this weekend as he substitutes again for the injured AlphaTauri driver. “In Monza, it’s going to be nice to have the full build-up to the weekend preparation-wise, being able to drive in all the practice sessions. For Zandvoort, I flew in from Japan on Thursday night after racing there the previous weekend,” said Lawson. “Obviously, you’re always prepared as much as you can be for these things, but it’s so unlikely that you never really expect it to happen, and then it did! The support from the team was amazing. They did everything possible to prepare me as much as possible in the limited time we had. Even during the race, Pierre [Hamelin, race engineer] was super supportive with so much information, basically walking me through it, and that really made my life a lot easier, but obviously, there are always things you can improve on. In the race, we had every condition thrown at us, so that was difficult at the time, but also a good and positive experience, which has helped me get ready for Monza.” Nissan names its 2024 Formula E line-up Nissan will retain Sacha Fenestraz for a second season in Formula E next year, and has signed Oliver Rowland to be his team mate. Pirelli reveals tyre compounds for Singapore, Japan and Qatar Pirelli has revealed which tyre compounds will be used for the Singapore, Japanese and Qatar grands prix. The C3, C4 and C5 tyres have been nominated for Singapore. It will be the seventh time that teams will have the softest possible selection of tyres, with the sixth time being at Monza this weekend. In Japan and Qatar it will be the opposite, with the hardest compounds, the C1, C2 and C3, being made available to teams. The C1 is a new compound for this year, and although it has been used four times already – most recently at Zandvoort last weekend – there will be a lot to learn in Qatar as the circuit has been resurfaced since F1 last raced there in 2021 with very different cars.
