Grow-A-Guy, starring Mike O'Brien as a nerdy high school kid and James Franco as his artificially-made friend.
Original Air Date: 2014

Now I understand how logical and correct it would be if Bayer became a canon. Because their story is built so smoothly and subtly. They both have injuries, they've been through hell together and no one would understand them as they are each other. Mike is the one who saw with his own eyes what Will went through. No guy in a relationship with Will would understand him as Mike. So yes, I want to believe that the Duffers will finish their story right and give them a happy ending.

A-T-3 259 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax (Sex Mix)
At the front of a pile of records is a copy of the Art Of Noise's Close Up, I'm looking at it convinced I have another copy with the same sleeve artwork but different tracks. Turns out ZTT put out at least four different 12" versions of Close Up/Close (To The Edit) all with the same sleeves and catalogue number but different tracks on them. That's what we have here with Relax by the same production team and on the same label as AON, there are at least seven variations of the UK 12", six variations of the European 12", and seven variations of the US 12" although I think the US 12s all have the same tracks on them
The UK 12"s either had the actual Sex Mix on it which is 16m24s long and doesn't get into the song we know from the single version, the 8m20s Sex Mix edit later named (Sex Mix (Edition 2)) with all the brackets which is confusingly also labelled as the Sex Mix on the records, and the U.S. Mix (which is called the New York Mix on compilations) this is 7m25s and essentially the single version with a long instrumental intro and it's also erroneously labelled Sex Mix on pressings. Three different mixes all labelled as the Sex Mix. In the UK it's the U.S. Mix that is most common. It's not easy to tell the different versions apart, you're looking at matrix numbers stamped into the vinyl, it's important because the 16 minute Sex Mix on the 1st pressing is a beast. It's just dawned on me as someone who buys and listens to records and who isn't subscribed to a streaming service finding the Sex Mix may be a lot easier now, especially as it's been compiled a few times
One of the reason for all these different versions in different territories was that Relax took a remarkable amount of time to become a hit. In the UK Relax was released in October 1983, it charted in the top 40 but hung around the lower end. In January 1984 Frankie Goes To Hollywood were invited to perform Relax on the 20th anniversary show of Top Of The Pops taking Relax from 22 to 6 in the charts. This led to BBC Radio 1 breakfast presenter Mike Read having a meltdown on-air about how disgusting the record was and refusing to play it. An outright ban rolled by the BBC and the record went to number 1. It stayed at number 1 for 5 weeks and was in the charts for a total of 70 weeks which at the time broke records for longest a song had been in the singles chart
I've sure the Mike Read rant was used on a 12" mix of a future Frankie Goes To Hollywood record. With the decision to ban Relax by the BBC the song about sexual freedom was made political. The fashion designer Katherine Hamnett was producing t-shirts with giant slogans on, I'm not sure if she designed the Frankie Say Relax t-shirts or they were an imitation of her designs, but, they were a fashion phenomenon... years later made into a joke on the US sitcom Friends
In the USA Relax hit in two waves, hence the different versions, once in 1984 and again in 1985. Maybe American's didn't get the innuendo, maybe they didn't care, MTV cared though and banned the video for it's depictions of gay sex - well done MTV!
Anne Yvonne Gilbert's brilliant illustration on the sleeve added to the controversy (the graphic design is an appropriation of Herbert Bayer's work in the 1920s)
Sexual taboos have changed enormously since Relax came out, Frankie Goes To Hollywood probably helped us as a society to relax just a little about sex, gay sex in particular, and that's a good thing. Of course there's still a long ways to go
I prefer music about sex than I do a pissing contests and committing violent acts (that's the music equivalent of American wrestling)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Mike Allsup (3 Dog Night), C.P.E. Bach, Cheryl Baker (Bucks Fizz), The Beach Boys’s 1965 TODAY! Album, Benny Blanco, Anne Bonny, Bob Brozman, Tom Chaplin (Keane), Cyd Charisse, Reina del Cid, "Gaz" Coombes(Supergrass), Lew DeWitt (Statler Brothers), Johnny Dollar, Ralph Ellis (Swinging Blue Jeans), Richard Farina, Alan Hale Jr., one of my favorite composers Alan Hovhaness, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Van Hunt, Mississippi John Hurt, Dick Hyman, Leon, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Edward MacDowell’s 2nd Piano Suite (1883), Camryn Manheim, Peggy March, Randy Meisner, Shawn Mullins, Gary Numan, Andrea Parker, Aidan Quinn, Lynn Redgrave, Johann von Rist, Andy Ross (OK Go), Carole Bayer Sager, Jean Sibelius’s 2nd Symphony (1902), Raynoma Singleton, Gábor Szabó, Claire Trevor, Milana Vayntrub, and my friend and sometime boss, one of the greatest rock’n’roll frontmen and tenor voices of all time Micky Dolenz. One critic called him “a cross between Freddy Mercury and Roy Orbison.” Most people know Micky as an actor, director, producer, radio DJ, writer, and singer on most of The Monkees’s hits, but he’s also an inventor and furniture maker. It’s been my honor and privliege (and sometimes learning experience) to work and hang out with Micky and to be part of the 2011 Monkees reunion tour of the UK and US. HB and God bless Micky. Here we are doing my #1 favorite Monkees track:

The Partridge Family Learning Curve
I have a clear memory of sitting at our kitchen table in Williamsville, NY in maybe 1969 and reading a blurb in the entertainment section of the Courier Express which said that The Cowsills were getting their own sitcom! My Cowsills! On TV every week!!
Patiently, I waited. Nothing. No further word. Until, at long last, The Partridge Family appeared, Friday nights at 8:30, following The Brady Bunch on ABC. To my eyes and heart they seemed a cheap Cowsills knockoff. In all of Hollywood they could not find child actors who could mime drums and Tamborine in time? Even dragged, kicking and screaming by the Miami Sound Machine, the rhythm was not going to get Chris and Tracy. (Although, Chris 2, Brian Forster was refreshingly beat savvy.)
I was appalled and chagrined but of course I watched. Shirley Jones? Delightful. You can’t look away. Danny Bonaduce is the finest child star, comic actor we have ever seen and David Cassidy is an actual musician. Clearly, he could play and sing. He did not make it to my bedroom wall. I was a Cowsills loyalist but there was enough goodness packed into the Partridge package for me to relax and enjoy the show.
I heard the hit records on the radio. I Think I Love You. Doesn’t Somebody Want To Be Wanted. I’ll Meet You Halfway. Catchy. Fun. I watched the musical performances loaded into every episode. Nice but so many distractions. Is Danny strumming his base? I hear a drum fill, but this kid’s hands are on the ride cymbal. And Tracy’s fancy arm choreography does not distract from her rhythm oblivion. My indignation was serving as a musial muffler.
Most of the songs were heard once, through a TV speaker, by one generation of people. The Partridge Family catalogue is not widely celebrated or played on oldies stations. But it is wonderful. Rich melodies. Stacked harmonies. Textured arrangements. Sure, the vocalists do not sound like kids, which as a kid, bugged me. But now, it’s just fantastic music.
So, besides David Cassidy and Shirley Jones, who created these recordings? The songs were written by Tony Romeo (Who had written Indian Lake for The Cowsills), Wes Ferrell, (also a Cowsills producer) Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, Carole Bayer Sager and the list of the period’s greatest songwriters continues. The backing tracks are by The Wrecking Crew.
Singers John and Tom Bahler, Ron Hicklin and Jackie Ward describe themselves as hired guns. The vocal equivalent of The Wrecking Crew. The music was arranged by Mike Melvoin and the sound they created was just outstanding.
It’s all available to us now. You can do your own Partridge Family dive and find gems like my current obsession, I’m On My Way Back Home, which according to Spotify, is written by Lorenz Hart. Reading that credit on your iPad late at night will keep you up. Thought bubbles include: OK, so Lorenz Hart dies in 1943 and this does not remotely resemble his touch or tone so maybe it’s reimagined…? Relax. By dawn’s early light I discovered it’s written by Bobby Hart.
OK, now that makes actual sense. The song is a mini-masterpiece of pounding joy and elegance. The bridge has a bridge! Honestly. It’s so good.
The Partridge Family catalogue of music is right here on the internet for all of us to re-experience and this is just the type of exploration that Fritz Coleman and I love to do on our podcast Media Path. In fact, if you know anyone who had anything to do with The Partridge Family music, we would love to feature them on our show.
That would really make us get happy!
