It's honestly wild to me that ToA went through so much trouble to emphasize the fact that Will did not magically fix all of Nico's problems and was explicitly not Nico's only doctor.
Only for TSATS to have Will fix all of Nico's problems and have Nico be entirely reliant on him the entire book and literally helpless without him and LITERALLY have Nico's problems be magically removed.
#pjo#riordanverse#tsats crit#nico di angelo#solangelo#it doesnt make any sense too cause. in HoO we KNOW Nico was fully capable of handling himself in Tartarus#we already knew he was explicitly on his own. we know he had it worse than Percy and Annabeth did#because we are explicitly told that Nico saw Tartarus' true nature the ENTIRE TIME versus Percy only getting a tiny half-glimpse of it once#and Percy acknowledges that he would not be able to withstand actually seeing Tartarus more than he did without just dying on the spot#and Nico was down there for as long as Percy and Annabeth at least. on his own. flying blind and explicitly having it worse.#so it doesnt make sense to totally retcon Nico's ENTIRE experiences with Tartarus to make him sopping wet and pathetic about it#needing to be helped and only being down there for twenty minutes and crying the whole time#and then all of the book he's literally functionally helpless without Will for some reason. despite being in his element.#could not get more in his element than being in the Underworld. my guy literally lives there. that's his HOUSE. that's his YARD.#and he's still just totally sopping wet and pathetic in Tartarus the second time around#like im sorry. no. we literally have previously established canon indicating this is absolutely not the case#that is not something you can retcon. that is an entire major event. it was not glossed over.#unless you are doing time travel and it's a canonical retcon a la Homestuck im sorry the events of TSATS just could never occur#(not to mention Damasen is just never acknowledged in TSATS and him and Bob were absorbed by Tartarus the god and ergo dead in HoH)#(so Bob and Damasen are like. *Gone* gone. they didn't just die to be reformed later they got ERASED.)#(and Nyx sure as hell isnt gonna be the one to have Bob trapped for whatever reason. definitely not cause she hates light/change/whatever)#(nyx is literally the mother/sister [depends on version - sometimes a mitosis situation] of the personification of day? and sky?)#(and FRIENDSHIP? and the nymphs of sunset? sometimes also CHEERFULNESS? and THOUGHTFULNESS? and old age)#(ah yes the mother of concepts such as love/friendship and aging and. day. would HATE [checks notes] love/friendship changing and light)#(she INVENTED THOSE) < anyways thank u for coming to my aside rant in the tags#in parenthesis to indicate this is an aside/tangent rant. anyways i have so many problems with this plot. it just DOESNT WORK#on NO LEVEL DOES IT WORK AT ALL WITH ESTABLISHED CANON

Demons and Demigods Part Six: Tartarus
Edit 4/12/24: okay so I might come back to this part and rewrite it at some point. I'll make a second post for that just to keep this one around bc i do like it, i just think it could be More lol
Alright, so this part is gonna be part hand-wavey transitions part written scene. I didn't want to split it up, so you'll just have to bear with me here for this one. This part also features dark!percy and, you know, The Horrors. Let me know if you want any warnings added to this one and I'll add them.
They get to Rome, split up to do their things, find Nico, fight the twins, Annabeth finds the Athena Parthenos, etc. Sam and Dean are stuck in Mystery Spot the same day Percabeth falls into Tartarus. And because demigods are ~weird~ they can all sense that something is off each repeat (especially because Percy and Annabeth seem Extra Off), and the Wednesday that Dean dies and then stays dead for four months is really fucking weird bc the demigods are just like, they know that nothing they do now is gonna stick they can feel it and Gaea and the Giants have like, stopped pulling shit so they’re just like wtf is going on. Then the world resets again and Percabeth has just fallen into Tartarus and off we go to continue the story. The demigods can sense that whatever was going on is over now and they hustle to get back to work.
Percabeth did not get reset because Tartarus works different and is beyond the reach and powers of a trickster (even if said trickster is actually the archangel Gabriel in disguise) so they were falling for longer than is canon and then spent a lot longer down there than in canon bc I’m a sadist <3 so the Percy and Annabeth that the rest of the seven interacted with on each reset were just illusions repeating canned lines.
(I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: this is my au and I can fuck with the timelines if I want to, so I am. Does it make sense? No. Do I care? Also no. I'm just having fun, don't think about any of it too hard.)
Now begins The Horrors.
Percabeth is in Tartarus dealing with The Horrors for like, a year. Between the topside Mystery Spot resets not affecting the Pit and time working differently down there anyway, it’s a long ass time for them. Tartarus is Large, it takes a long time to traverse its expanse. They suffer through drinking the fire water and trying desperately to stay alive to make it to the Doors. It’s been months and they’ve both started to lose themselves a little to the nature of the Pit. Percy is a little more vicious when cutting down monsters, Annabeth is a little slower to reign him in. It’s . . . almost easier down there. It’s all cut a dry. It’s just kill or be killed. It’s us or them. There is nothing but fight and kill and stay alive and always keep moving. It’s simple.
Bob shows up and it’s a reminder that there’s more out there, a reminder of who they were and what they’re fighting for when they had begun to forget that there had ever been anything other than Hell. They regain a little bit of who they were before the Fall.
The arai fuck shit up real bad lmao. They fight and get cursed and then Annabeth is blinded and she can’t find Percy and Percy is enraged. He stops caring about anything but getting to her, he doesn’t care about all the curses he is taking on, he can’t feel the pain of them anymore. The arai fall all around him with every swing of his sword. The curses pile up and still he doesn’t stop. They mean nothing in the face of his rage and desperation to get back to Annabeth’s side.
And then it happens. He cuts down an arai and then he’s on the ground. Annabeth is still calling for him and the arai are laughing at him. The curse of Phineas, they cackle. A slow, painful death for the son of Poseidon who has caused so much suffering and pain; it is fitting.
Percy is in unbearable pain; his blood is boiling in his veins and his skin is sloughing off his bones. His head is pounding and throbbing and he thinks it might explode. His muscles are burning and tearing themselves apart as his bones liquify. He knows that he is dying and fears that he won’t. Still he tries to get up, tries to stand and continue fighting. He refuses to go out without a fight, and he refuses to leave Annabeth to suffer the nightmares of this place alone.
He manages to get back to his feet, although he has no idea how, and he has not the strength to lift his sword, barely the strength to grip it. And so he lunges, ripping the arai apart with hands and teeth as he burns, everything burning burning burning. But Annabeth is always just out of reach and his strength cannot last forever. He goes down. His vision is fading and he can’t tell if he’s breathing, he’s not even sure he has lungs to breathe with anymore. With the last of his strength he turns his gaze to the vaguely silver outline of where Bob is standing off to the side and prays. He begs with the shredded remains of his deteriorating mind for Bob to keep Annabeth safe. He apologizes for never visiting, for being a bad friend.
And then the lights go out and Percy knows that this is it. He has a moment to wonder if his soul will remain trapped in Tartarus for all eternity or if it will manage to escape. With his luck, he doubts it.
Bob moves, then. He clears away the arai and grabs Annabeth before she walks off the cliff. He heals her and carries her over to where Percy is lying still on the ground. Annabeth begs Bob to help him, cradles him in her arms and tells him that he can’t die, he can’t leave her to find the Doors alone, she needs him. Bob tries to heal him.
Percy is a gruesome sight. He’s bleeding from a hundred different wounds, one of his legs looks broken and there is bone sticking out of his arm. He’s covered in blood and bruises and burns and he’s far too cold.
Bob manages to fix most of the wounds and heals the broken bones. But the gorgon’s blood poison is beyond his abilities to take care of. They head to Damasen’s.
Annabeth is wary, but desperate, and Bob is holding Percy so she had no choice but to follow.
Damasen helps them, albeit reluctantly. Percy slowly gets better. Annabeth is thankful for the weeks of rest they get at Damasen’s hut while Percy recovers. Eventually, however, Percy is as healed as he is going to get in Tartarus, where the very air they breathe is slowly killing them, and they need to move on.
It’s slow progress, heading towards the lady Bob says can help them with the death mist stuff, but they make it. Bob couldn’t come with them all the way, but he promised to meet them afterwards.
And then Misery herself shows up and she is going to kill them. After everything else they’ve been through, after everything else they’ve done to get this far, they’re going to die at the hands of a sniveling, whining old hag? No.
Percy is angry. He is furious. He wrests control of the poison from her and reverses its flow. He grabs hold of her tears and snot and saliva and forces it back, making her sob harder and it only gives him more to work with. Annabeth stands back and watches.
Percy sees just how much misery Misery can take. She is begging him to let her go and he can’t help but laugh. It’s pitiful, how quickly she’s given in, given up. That cracked glass orb somewhere in the core of him shatters. And all of a sudden, he can feel. He can sense the congestion rattling in her lungs and the ichor pumping through her veins.
He wants to grab hold of it, grab hold of everything in her and make her scream. He wants to make her feel even a fraction of the pain that he and Annabeth have had to endure down here.
But then Annabeth’s ghoulish hand is on his arm and he turns to look at her and her eyes are sharp, even from beneath the guise of the death mist, and she shakes her head. He tilts his, asking, are you sure? He can kill this goddess, he is suddenly certain of this fact, and he would, if Annabeth told him to. She shakes her head again.
He clears a path and lets Misery go.
Nyx is frightening, yes, but Percy can feel the ichor in her veins just as easily as he could in Misery’s. He is not as afraid as he knows he should be.
They survive the House of Night and make it to the other side intact.
Percy can sense Annabeth’s heart pounding as they run, can feel her blood pumping and it makes his head throb, but they don’t have time for him to think about it, so he shoves it to the back of his mind and carries on.
They meet up with Bob. Percy can almost hear the ichor in his veins and he can sense every movement Bob is about to make, can feel his muscles tense and stretch.
They make it to the Doors and Percy can hardly think over the sound of all the blood pumping within the horde of monsters before them. It echoes in his head, gallons of blood and ichor roaring in his ears. He stumbles and Annabeth catches him. He can’t hear her worried questions over the pounding in his head.
He gets it under control.
They make it to the Doors and cut one chain. They fight. Tartarus himself appears.
Percy drops his sword. He claps his hands over his ears and screams. He can feel it now, the body of Tartarus coming to life beneath their feet; the rivers of the Underworld flow through his veins, monsters writhe around in pustules on his skin. They stand atop the thunderous beating of his massive heart.
Percy can feel it all and he can feel his mind begin to fray at the immensity of it, at the truth of the Pit. Mortal minds were not meant to bear this reality.
Annabeth is kneeling in front of him (he doesn’t remember hitting the ground) and her hands are covering his over his ears and she’s trying to talk to him but all he can hear is the rushing of the rivers beneath Tartarus’ skin. Bob is fighting off monsters and his brothers as the manifestation of Tartarus watches from the sidelines. Damasen is there (when did he get here? Percy’s mind is fracturing, he can’t think straight, he can’t keep track of what’s going on) and Percy blinks and Damasen has thrown himself at Tartarus and Annabeth is trying to haul him into the Doors.
Percy tries to speak but he can’t seem to make his voice work. They need to stay, to help their friends. They can’t leave Bob and Damasen behind.
Annabeth is crying.
Percy reaches up to wipe the tears from her cheeks and tries to focus only on her, tries to block out the body of Tartarus and the horde of monsters.
Suddenly, Bob is there, scooping them up and depositing them in the elevator. “The button must be held for twelve minutes or else the Doors will open and you will die, trapped within whatever lies between here and the surface.”
Annabeth tries to protest. Percy can barely make out what Bob is saying.
“I will hold the button,” Bob says. “Thank you, friends, for giving us hope.” He glances over his shoulder at where Damasen and his drakon are holding off the tide of monsters and trying to keep Tartarus at bay. “We will do this for you, and we are honored to. You must hold the Doors closed on your side. They do not like the living and will try to spit you out.”
Bob presses the button and the Doors begin to slide closed. “Please tell the sun and stars I say hello,” he says with a soft smile, and the Doors shut.
It’s a long, long ride back to the surface. Annabeth and Percy throw their shoulders into the Doors, fighting to keep them closed. Annabeth sobs, but Percy still isn’t quite all there.
The longer they’re in the elevator and the farther they get from the Pit, the more Percy begins to come back to himself. Annabeth watches the awareness slowly return to his eyes and his face crumple with despair as he regains his mind and can finally make sense of what just happened.
They mourn, but they keep the Doors closed.
Above, the whole thing with Pasiphae and Clytius is happening. The Doors ding. Leo throws a screwdriver to hit the button.
The Doors slide open.
Percy and Annabeth tumble out, still clinging to each other even as they collapse.
They look dead.
Clytius uses them to speak and everyone is pissed off, then Hazel and Hecate kill him <3
Percy and Annabeth are alive, but only just. And they’re out. Nico and Hazel kneel on either side of them. Nico reaches out to clutch at the tattered remains of Percy’s shirt and Hazel grabs hold of Annabeth’s wrist.
The others gather around and hold hands. Nico and Hazel shadow travel them all out of there.
In the light, it’s worse.
Reyna and Coach Hedge meet them on the hilltop and freeze. Hedge starts cursing up a storm and Reyna chokes back bile. Leo turns around and throws up. Frank gags. Hazel sobs and Nico feels like he can’t breathe. Piper turns and buries her head in Jason’s chest. He wraps his arms around her tightly but can’t bring himself to look away from Percy and Annabeth.
They’re horrifyingly thin, emaciated. The tattered remnants of their clothes hang off their skeletal frames. Their skin was pale and sallow, their cheeks sunken. Their chests rattled with each shallow, labored breath. They were covered in cuts and bruises, weeping lacerations and half-healed scabs littering their skin beneath layers of dirt and grime and other nasty substances.
The others wondered just how long Percy and Annabeth had been down there.
Jason gently lifts Percy into his arms and flies him to the ship, Frank right behind him as a dragon with Annabeth carefully cradled in his claws.
Reyna, Hedge, and Nico leave with the Athena Parthenos.
Percy and Annabeth are settled in two beds in the small infirmary on the Argo II to rest. No one knows when (if) they’ll wake up. Someone is always with them, though. Be it Hazel gently wiping the grime from their skin or Piper carefully cleaning their wounds, Jason dribbling nectar between their cracked lips or Frank doing some physical therapy exercises to try and keep their muscles from atrophying any further.
The boat was quiet and tense, everyone waiting with bated breath for Percy and Annabeth to wake up.
And eventually, they did.

Part 1
Blue eyes met worried dark ones. Instantly, he heard Nico's voice, but he couldn't make out what he said. Will tried to pinpoint where all of the pain was coming from, but everything just felt wrong. It took much of his willpower to focus on his surroundings, well those outside of the beautiful dark-haired boy we had woken up to.
The first thing he noticed was that he wasn't in the infirmary. While it made the instinct to not look for his older brother whom he knew wouldn't be there easy to ignore, it also made him feel uneasy. Where were they? How had they gotten here?
"-olace. Will!" Nico's accented voice cut through his thoughts. A cold hand holding tightly to his overheating one.
"You sound like an angel." Will wasn't sure why his mouth didn't get the memo that admiring Nico in dire situations normally stays in his thoughts, but before he could try to form any coherent way of "taking it back" Nico's cheeks tinted pink, and suddenly it was well worth it.
"Don't think compliments and flattery are going to save your ass." The pale boy scowled, though it was hardly as affective as it should have been. "Honestly, what the Hades were you thinking?"
Will tried to filter through his brain for any recollection of what Nico could be referring to, but it seemed his brain still hadn't caught up with the present. He was happy to be able to lift his hand to brush against Nico's cheek with confused eyes. "I don't understand. Where are we? What happened?"
Nico seemed to tense up and let out a quiet sigh. "We're still in Tartarus, Will. Right now, we are in the hut that belongs to Damasen. Small Bob brought us here." Will nodded and bit the inside of his cheek.
“Is he- is he around?” Will couldn't help but wince at how weak and pathetic his voice sounded. He was sure Nico noticed, but his boyfriend didn't say a word about it. “Damasen went out to find something that may help you. I fed you some ambrosia earlier..Will, I'm sorry. Shit, if I paid more atten-”
The blonde leaned up (much to the protest of his body) and grabbed Nico by the boy's aviator jacket and pulled him in for a kiss. It was short and sweet, but exactly what they both needed. “It's alright, Nico. I'd do anything for you.” Even if he couldn't exactly remember what happened, he could piece things together. After all, he wasn't stupid. Waking up in the hut of someone who was said to help with healing, Nico's worried eyes, ambrosia, Lee, all of it fell into place. Will had taken a near-fatal blow for Nico…and he would do it again in a heartbeat.
“If anything, I should be the one apologizing to you. I know how much you've lost people and I-”
“William Andrew Solace, if you apologize for saving my life so help me.” Nico was looking at the ground, shaking his head. His voice was filled with fond exasperation. “What am I going to do with you?”
“You could take care of me? Nurse me back to health?” Will could feel his cheeks heating up. Before this trip, it was something he would have never mentioned. Will Solace was not someone who got taken care of. Will Solace took care of others. Will Solace smiled through the pain. Will Solace didn't allow himself to break down or cry. Will Solace had to be a ray of sunshine in everyone's life. Will Solace had no darkness inside of him…
Or did he? Ever since his meeting with the goddess Persephone, Will couldn't help but think of all the times he so desperately wanted to cry for his big brothers. The hatred he felt towards Percy for months after the Battle of Manhattan, despite knowing it wasn't his fault. (He only didn't let Will look for Michael, but it's fine. Will has accepted it.) All of the times he felt like breaking under the pressure of being the perfect older brother and head counselor.
The truth was that Will Solace did have darkness inside of him - it was just hidden by the overwhelming light. Trust is a two-way road, and if he wants Nico to give him trust, he needs to show that he trusts Nico in return. Will wants to show Nico his darkness. He wants to allow himself to be cared for once again. It's a revelation that shocks him more than probably anything else so far on this trip, though it's not over yet. They still have to find Bob the Titan.
“Yeah, I'll take care of you.” Nico's voice is so soft that Will almost misses it, but he doesn't miss the comforting squeeze the cold hand in his warm one brings.
“Nico, can I tell you about my older brothers?”
“Go ahead, Will. We have a little time to rest.” Those soft brown eyes looked at him with such understanding and love that Will felt things were gonna be alright for the first time in a while.

Just finished The Sun and the Star! The pacing was off (they don't get to Tartarus until almost two-third of the way through the book, they should have gotten to it a third of the way in or earlier) but I still enjoyed it. Tartarus is easily the most interesting location in the Riordanverse, and I liked how it explored the themes of coming to terms with your trauma and accepting yourself completely. The little rebellion against Nyx was cool, I want something like that to happen against Zeus, though hopefully more successfully.
And yay, Bob and Small Bob were rescued! Hopefully Damasen regenerates soon and is able to escape as well.
The Trogs' little society in the Underworld was neat, they really are well-suited to the place. While I thought we spent too long in it, it was cool to see some more of how the Underworld runs, especially where nectar and ambrosia come from. I always wondered about that.
I was disappointed that we didn't spend longer with Amphithemis though, the readriordan article made him sound more important than he actually was. I still want to know whether he actually got laid to rest, gods don't have a great track record of keeping their promises. I really wanted to see Dionysus's reaction to finding out about him at least.
It was cool seeing Nico's first trip to Tartarus! I did wonder what happened down there. Looks like he didn't actually pack any pomegranate seeds, they were gifted to him by Nemesis. Surprisingly helpful goddess, that one.
The Percy and Annabeth bit bothered me I'm afraid. They deserve a break, but it felt wrong that they flat-out forgot about Bob, considering he leaped down there specifically to save them. I also wished Apollo had been mentioned more (but he's my favorite Riordanverse character so that ain't a surprise).
I did really like some of Nico's characterization here, particularly how he's always the first to reach out to the downtrodden, the weird, even the scary beings around. He can be an edgelord, but he's also probably the single most compassionate demigod in the series.
Oh and I find it funny that apparently Mythomagic has been around since the 1940's here. That must be one successful card game!

so i’ve got mixed feelings about The Sun and The Star overall (on one hand YEAAA QUEER REP!! on the other, some kinda strange writing decisions?) but what i WAS kinda disappointed by was that, i feel like the book just skipped over Damasen?? yk, the ~other half~ of the reason percy and annabeth were able to make it out of tartarus?? the only good giant, punished for being good, who’s been trapped in tartarus far longer than Bob? I mean it even felt like the original HoH book was trying to set up Damasen’s return to earth, with Annabeth telling him to visualize where he wanted to go, and that he could fight fate and escape.
So when i heard the new book would be about Nico returning to Tartarus to rescue Bob, i took it for granted that he’d also rescue Damasen. but Damasen is only referenced in passing. Nico and Will pass through his abandoned house, and the giant’s mentioned to still be regenerating, and that’s about it. I mean, sure, Nico didn’t know Damasen personally. But Percy and Annabeth absolutely mentioned him, and Nico is repeatedly characterized as “That One Guy who looks out for the forgotten”. so if we’re going on Tartarus quest the squeakquel, the one meant to tie up all the loose ends and be the tartarus evacuation arc, i’m sort of expecting them to save the other half of the “percy-annabeth rescue squad” yk?? it just feels sort of arbitrary to hyperfixate on one, and barely touch on the other.
Even at the end there, when Hades offered Nico one wish, i was *convinced* he would use it on Damasen. like i was so ready. but no, it was the lamian centaur guy?? i mean it was a nice wish, but he was such a brief part of the book i’d almost forgotten about him. i guess the whole Damasen thing just felt a bit like a loose thread to me, especially for a book explicitly about rescuing the forgotten.

I’m also not a fan of the retconning apparently done in TSATS? Like they go through all this “we have to get Bob out, he’s our friend and doesn’t deserve to be stuck there” but Damasen who also helped is only mentioned? And they changed his ending with the drakon? (It’s stated he was killed by it when last we saw he had tamed it). And Bianca was said to have chosen rebirth and though I was never a fan of that now she has apparently always been in Elysium?
No fr it's a mess of a situation. I don't like it, but it wasn't written by Rick so 🤷‍♀️

TSATS SPOILERS!!!
So I just got and finished reading The Sun and the Star and oh my gods.... Rick portrayed their dynamics wonderfully, of course their relationship isn't going to perfect. With Nico's insecurities and Will making uncomfortable jokes about the Underworld, angst was bound to happen. No love is perfect, there are always ups and downs but it was soooo WONDERFULLY depicted by Rick. The long gray and black chapters showing Nico's haunting dreams and actually seeing what happened to him during his time in Tartarus.
I love how Rick Riordan made Nyx more fearsome and powerful as befitting her status as the literal embodiment of Night. I love how manipulative Nyx was and I love love LOVE LOVE the Cocoa Puffs!!! I love how Rick beat back the Solangelo haters with such a beautiful content of their love and respect for each other. (I remember some people were calling Will ab*sive and rude and some people were even making such weird speculations on what would happen in TSATS, like legit someone said something like: "Nico cheating on Will with Jason's ghost in the new book". Like wtf dude, these people really be pulling out the wildest shit out of their asses. They be the same people that be saying Annabeth is ab*sive and that Leah Jeffries isn't "black enough", like bffr)
I love how Rick didn't make Nico's trauma go away because of the power of love and instead the whole journey to Tartarus with Will was what he needed for closure and to face his demons (literally too). I love that Bob was back but I am absolutely DESTROYED THAT DAMASEN WASN'T THERE!!!!
I know that Damasen wasn't in Nyx's view because he didn't really change. Yes, he did change and got the courage to leave his swamp but he had always defied his position as the antithesis to a god. so Tartarus is still holding back his regeneration. I am so sad that he was only slightly mentioned, I wish he was there, I could imagine him and Bob starting a life together (doesn't have to be gay) as the only giant and titan to defy their roles.
Also the plot twist with Menoetes and Geryon!!? Was I lowkey hoping that we got see newly reformed Geryon and Nico chat? Yes. Was I disappointed it wasn't shown. Also Yes. Was I absolutely okay with this random ship? Yes.
I also absolute love Will's powerups. From a light wielding sack of potatoes to someone who gave the Primordial of Night HAY FEVER!!! I loved Gorgyra who at first I was a bit annoyed at, but later appreciated as her wanting them to tell her stories was a way to help them in the end.
Also, to anyone who thinks the Tartarus thing belongs to Percabeth SHUT UP!!! A trauma experience is not limited to your favorite ship or character. Also, Nico was the first person ever to go into Tartarus and survive all the while knowing that he was walking in the body of a living breathing Primordial and the only one to fully witness the horrors of the House of Night. Sure Percy realized that Tartarus was an actual entity instead of a place, but it was MUCH LATER in their adventure.
Edit: This book was from a totally new way of writing for Rick as it mainly focuses on healing and the ptsd. And to those who think it was a bit unrealistic for Nico to have existential crisis, mind you he was going to Tartarus. The very place he NEARLY LOST HIS MIND IN. He was 13/14 when he went down there and was captured and put into a jar! Will was also a great candidate for his quest because it was like Annabeth and Percy said, having someone you love and and trust in that hellscape is the best way to survive. Sure Hazel and Reyna would have been great candidates too, but we wouldn't get the same thing we got in TSATS. Will was someone Nico trusted and loved and Nico was the same to him.
Also, fanon versions of Nico has absolutely ROTTED the minds of many "fans". Nico is not emo, while he was a little edgy he was mostly depressed. Also the timing of this book releasing is quite nice as well, because of all the anti-lgbtq things happening in the US, where many queer or other books are being banned. This book touches on the lgbtq subject where many young adults 10-14 year olds will read as it is part of a very popular book series.

realistically with the way rr created pjo and crafted the conflict and Main Issues in the series' narrative, the conclusion should have been that the gods turn into humans or that there's no olympian gods all gods kinda just *exist*. he made the olympian gods have a superiority complex, ignoring their own kids and not claiming them so usually they end up in hermes cabins, or they are the minor gods' kids and they are not wanted in the camp, they usually end up dead before becoming adults, and that the 'minor gods' are unwanted and their kids arent accepted bc they are not that 'powerful' so they are not seen valuable they are easily discarded so they either die or live more shitty lives (or join kronos bc of the mistreatment they face). literally the hoo follows the same narrative, we had the 7 demigods of the prophecy all being the main gods' kids..... the minor gods were still being mistreated jason had to promise one of them that they will build more shrines and give more recognition to them.... it got revealed that the olympians have been keeping this whole ass camp aka camp jupiter a secret. its been revealed that they have not been actually claiming their kids either. which was a thing that percy made them promise xDD? we had nico saying he's still not accepted even after the war, and the minor gods' kids still are not even seen. and then rince and repeat without any problem solving bc the issue/problems still continue like??? no promises are kept bc riordan cannot make the problems to be solved bc you gotta keep the conflict going for the next serie/book. so that's why percy's promise isn't kept and the promises he made for other people are not kept either (his promise to calypso, his promise to nico, his promise to bob&damasen, etc). pls end this misery I'm beginning it makes no sense.
totally agree with you.
personally i wouldn’t *enjoy* the concept of gods becoming mortals/stopping to exist but it’s pretty obvious that rick riordan has no intention to ever let his characters dismantle the system of oppression that is the root of all their problems. which is fine, not every story needs a definite practical resolution.
a book about someone who’s unemployed desperately needing a job that can sustain their family doesn’t have to end with capitalism being dismantled to be considered a good book or have a happy ending. Sometimes things suck and that’s just how it is and you need to survive within them, which is pretty much what Apollo tells us in ToN.
The problem is that every pjo series recycle the same basic foundation whereas 1) someone is presented as the real villain but it turns out the gods are just as bad, 2) the protagonist comes to understand that too but decides to do nothing about it.
It does indeed get frustrating. not to mention that, with this premise, every new series inevitably weakens the ending of the previous one, where some kind of resolution was found.
ToA leaves demigods in a better place than they were before but Apollo still calls Olympus a tyranny in the very last chapter.

I will say, Percy and Annabeth being super broken up about Bob and Damasen and determined to remember and honour their sacrifice in the back half of HoO only to admit in TSatS that they hadn't thought about them in ages (and don't mention Damasen at all even to suggest Nico and Will ask him for help, seriously, the cat was a higher priority than Damasen) is pretty on brand. Please Rick why couldn't we have less nonsense and more discussion about that.

Dark! Percy Part1
I can’t help it! Suddenly the idea of dark Percy grows on me. Some of the ideas are not mine, but I really love them so I add them to my work.
How does it feel to have the power to bring the storm? How does it feel to have the ability to shake the ground? How does it feel to have the power to bend the liquid? Ask Percy Jackson. Then he will punch into your face. And he will bend your blood like you are just a piece of grass. He didn't want to be like that. He didn't mean to be like that. He was the hero of Olympus, the leader of both camps. His friends all loved him and he loved them as well. He had a beautiful girlfriend and a big family. His life was nice. His life was nice, once. During their journey to fight Gaia, he and Annabeth fell into Tartarus. They went through these tough days together. These days are always one of their most terrible nightmares. When they got back, everyone thought they were just fine. Nothing changed. But only themselves knew what happened. Annabeth always told her friends how scary there was, but she didn't tell anyone that Percy was the most terrible one. She begged him not to be like that, and he agreed. But she had a bad feeling that this would happen in the future. For the sea doesn't like to be restrained. That day had finally come. Annabeth didn't stay with him that day. She was in Boston. As soon as she heard the news that the camp was attacked, she rushed back, but it was too late. Percy stood there, with some bloody pieces on the ground. "Wh-What?" She tried to make her voice. Percy turned his face towards her. "Annabeth..." His face was deadly calm but his eyes...Annabeth stepped back. The madness and pain in his eyes...This scared her. Noticed her terrified, his face soon turned into care."Are you okay..." He passed out. Will told her what happened. In his words, the camp was attacked by a cyclops and some campers were seriously injured. Percy came to help but the cyclops mentioned his experiences in Tartarus and it said that their sacrifices down there were useless. This made Percy extremely angry and he used his power to beat the cyclops. Will said he had never seen Percy be so cold and cruel. He tortured it to death in an extremely cruel way. Blood bleeding slowly all over its body until it finally exploded crazily. Will said he would never forget the cyclops' painful scream and Percy's laughter. Annabeth shivered. Cold sweats came all over her neck. The last time he nearly killed the Misery, she stopped him in time. But this time nobody could stop him...She decided never to leave Percy alone again. "Annabeth, I'm so sorry..." said Percy."I didn't mean to do that...I was too angry and too painful." His green eyes were full of tears like a kid had done wrong things. Annabeth could feel his fear, deep in his mind. But they went through so many hard times together and Annabeth won't leave him alone. She knew what made him so angry. "Bob and Damasen." She said softly but in deep sorrow. "Their sacrifices are worth much." Tears finally fell down his face. "I'm so sorry for them...Th-They died for us but we can live a happy life..." Annabeth found herself crying with him as well. But she didn't stop herself. She thought this would make him feel better. "I-I can't control me...and my power..."Percy continued, sobbing. "I can feel every water in its cell in his body, an-and when it started. It-it became unstoppable. Annabeth, please...Tell me I'm not a monster. Tell me I'm not evil..." That time, Annabeth felt so helpless. She didn't know his feeling at all. All she could do is to stay by his side and comfort him. "I'm here." She tried to smile, and it worked. Percy's body calmed down and relaxed. That was all she could do for him. For the next few months, she stayed with Percy, comforted him, and looked after him. Percy seemed nice, but only himself knew how he felt. He could feel every drop of water around him. That means, everything. He tried his best to back to normal. No killing, no fighting, just he and Annabeth. Things were more complicated than he thought. His fear was getting deeper, as well as his power. He found it harder and harder to control. His vein cried for killing. He had no choice but to ask them to stop. He knew this was not a good way and someday he might totally lose control. He tried not to think about that. "It's just my fear." He said to himself. "I can control myself. I won't hurt anyone. I love them all." Then a lightning strike into his life broke everything he mattered.
Guys this is my first time writing long fic. I’m not sure if I did sth good. If it does pls let me know. I’m not a good writer at all.

Things i want to see in Nico solo book
Help from the Seven. Such as some inventions from the Hephaestus cabin, Reyna’s gift and threat of “If you don’t come back i will personally jump down there and drag you back to the surface”. And perhaps some blessings from Apollo.
Hazel’s reaction. Percy and Ananbeth’s.
JASON GRACE COMEBACK OHHHHHHH. He would break out of Elysium to have a good luck talk with Nico and Will, really.
Dionysus’ secret support. That guy has a soft spot for Nico, srsly.
Nico and Will encouraging, supporting and protecting each other through out the trip. It goes both way.
Having gone through Tartarus once, Nico deals with deadly situations with either utmost fear or admirable experiences. Both of which break Will’s heart the same.
Damasen being impressed and sad that Nico survived in Tartarus alone without his help, unlike Percy and Annabeth.
Nico realizing Bob has gained back his lost memories. He’s terrified and lost, thinking he’s lost the first friend he made (because that who Bob is to him and you cannot convince me otherwise) and maybe this is a trap Iapetus set up to kill him and he even dragged Will into this———But then Bob smiles and assures them they are still friends all the same and Bob still wants to be a kind giant.
Will and Bob bonding over positive feelings towards Nico. Bob telling Will how Nico was kind enough to befriend him, then Will starts shamelessly fangirling over Nico.
Will telling their own story. WE GET TO SEE HOW THEY BECAME A COUPLE AKHDKWHSJSBSJX
Will’s trauma. Backstory. Character development. Something defining him more than just the fandom’s favorite character’s canon boyfriend.
Maria di Angelo. She’s an angel and if there’s not a single scene of her I’m fucking rioting.
Hades figuring out that Nico has gone to Tartarus. again. and somehow sending his aid. Maybe appearing in his dream for mental encouragement, idk. He is angry that Nico disobeyed him to dive right into danger, but he wishes his son safe all the same.
ZAGREUS. A SINGLE MENTION OF HIS NAME AND I’M GONNA COMBUST INSTANTLY. He doesn’t have to be like Zagreus in Hades game. I just want to see Underworld siblings bonding.
Anklys bringing back Nico’s anguish and sorrows and Will and Nico beating her. Will complimenting Nico on overcoming his pains and Nico being aware of Will’s struggles as well.
Will glowing in the House of Night and Nyx being annoyed. Idk why i just think it’s funny.
Fighting Tartarus himself. And maybe closing it for good this time.
Will helping a trog and later a trog saving him. Both become friends afterwards and Nico is glad but also teasing his boyfriend for it.

So, when I hear about the Prophecy of the Seven, I thought about Luke being the one "foe" that they would see on the Door of Death. I love Bob, and Damasen, but now I think that there was a Big Wasted oportunity.
Because while in Tartarus Percy starts to really understand Luke's view. And imagine him there?!
First. "Why" it's the question. It was his punishment? Please, Zeus wanted to send his family that wanted to form a democratic Olympus and he didn't because the one that helped him made him promise that he wouldn't.
Bringing Kronos? Free Pass to Tartarus. And Percy and Annabeth how would react? And Luke, would he want to help them o Gaia or Tartarus make him work for them?
But maybe not? He was actually in the Fields of Punishment, and as a Son of Hermes, the God That Can Do A Lot Of Stuff, like travel between other god's domains, he may manage to escape the Furies. And his dad the Messenger Divine Dude he may have heard some way that Annabeth and Percy were on Tartarus and he... jump to join. Three is better than Two, right?
So either the motive, we have Luke. In Tartarus. Along with Annabeth and Percy. Who are so done with their fate.
And how would that be? Luke as "Oh, the gods didn't respect their words? I'm so surprised" or "Mood. Let me help you save the world this time". Luke as "Goofy Ex Villain". And either he sacrifices himself, or manage to escape along them. Or try to betray them? A sort of Marvel's Loki? Who knows?
Who knows?!
I'm gonna just go ahead and assume you're talking about in canon, and not in PoR bc PoR Luke doesn't get a redemption arch.
But I've heard mention of this idea before and I really like it! Damen and Bob were okay, but they were very much disposable characters that were created just to serve a purpose, so it'd be interesting to see an alternate option.
I like the idea of Luke escaping the fields of punishment bc he's a willy son of Hermes-- maybe also, it's easier to escape if you literally escape to tartarus? So like, maybe his punishment included him walking near an entrance to tartarus or something (maybe he had the leaky bucket punishment) and he always looked at it and then one day he heard a rumor that Annabeth and Percy were down there and he was like oh worm??
So Luke jumps down to tartarus, bucket and all. He's still very much dead, but dead in a "fields of punishment" kind of way. This means he can't sleep, he can't eat, but he always can't exhaust himself (he's supposed to walk, carrying this heavy bucket, for all eternity, which means he'd be constantly tired but could never run out of steam). Let's say, more specifically, his punishment involves walking a long distance, past a pit of tartarus, dumping his bucket in the river Styx (or another river), which burns his hands and makes them raw, and then he has to walk back to where he came from and dump the water out, but by that point most of it had leaked out anyways. There's no way to keep the bucket from leaking, and his hands heal naturally, so every time he dumps his bucket in the river there is fresh pain from his hands burning again and again.
Which sucks. BUT. When he escapes into tartarus, he retains those traits, which means that he can't tire, he doesn't need food or sleep, and he heals automatically (though slowly). This would be a big advantage in tartarus.
I imagine him jumping down and saving Annabeth and Percy from a baddie at the exact right moment. They're fucked, they're injured and weaponless, the fight is not going well, and then the monster is about to make its kill shot when BAM! It's hit over the head with an enchanted celestial bronze-infuzed leaky bucket, and it dissolves into dust. And there's Luke.
Who's to say how Percy and Annabeth would react. I'm gonna go ahead and guess "poorly", because damn, they almost died and now here's fucking /Luke/. Maybe, they were told that Luke went to Elysium because he was a hero in the end, but the gods had actually lied, always intending to send him to the fields of punishment for betraying and trying to overthrow them (regardless of how he was manipulated into that choice, regardless of how he changed his mind and defeated Kronos in the end). So now Percy is feeling /really/ fucking betrayed, because shit man, the gods really are just liars and cheats and torturers.
I feel like this would naturally settle into a very of HoO that ends with the gods being overthrown as well. Which, imma be honest, its not my favorite version-- who would run the place? Will demigods die out? Will the current demigods absorb the old gods powers and rule like they did, eventually becoming more and more corrupt? I don't know. BUT, I feel like in this version of the story, Luke helps Annabeth and Percy through tartarus and his mere existence feeds into Percy's already-present anger at the gods and subsequent rejection of them. Luke dies at the doors of death, idk how, but somehow he is the sacrifice, and there's no coming back this time. His soul will be scattered in the wind, not going to the Underworld again, and in some ways its a tragedy because he deserved Elysium, and in some ways its good because he was never meant to stay in one place for all eternity, and now the willy son of Hermes is free for good.
So Luke's gone. Annabeth and Percy go up to the mortal world again. Grover is there (in this version, he'd be there instead of coach hedge), and he knows something is very very wrong, but Percy won't talk to him about it. Eventually Annabeth does, though, so Grover understands why Percy does what he does next.
Gaea rises in Greece, and Percy and the others fight her, and make it seem like they're just killing her. But, at the same time, they manage to connect all of the Olympian life forces to her, so when she goes down, they go down with her. The gods only realize too late. They are killed, and their power is transferred, making the 7 questers the New Olympians.

hey!! i loved your hoo playlist! can you explain more or less where which book begins and ends? or just your thought process behind picking the songs?
omg hi!! this is going to be really long I’m so sorry... I vaguely broke them up by book and sorta character/event/theme, it’s not super strict or anything but that was the logic!
I kinda imagine it playing out like a movie or tv series.. and so some of these kinda play over a scene or transition to the credits in my head? some more than others! otherwise it’s like punny titles or just songs that remind of plot points!
Lost Hero
Tumblr media
- Goodbye Stranger - for Jason, since he has no idea what’s going on lol
- Teenage Dream - for the three of them, but mostly Piper!
You think I'm pretty without any makeup on You think I'm funny when I tell the punch line wrong
- Parachute - kinda Jason and Piper, I think as she realizes their relationship isn’t quite what it seems? (and just playing with his flying lol!)
- Metal Guru - Leo!
- Pretty Girl - Piper, I was imagining this when she clashes with Drew/learns about the Aphrodite cabin
And I could be a pretty girl Shut up when you want me to And I could be a pretty girl Won't ever make you blue And I could be a pretty girl I'll lose myself in you
- The Sky’s The Limit - when the three of them take off on Festus
- Snowqueen Of Texas - this was for Khione lol
I'm on my knees, your majesty; Snowqueen, save a cold kiss for me I'm on my knees your majesty
- Sweet Talkin’ Woman - this is book-wide but it’s for Piper’s charmspeak!
- Are You Gonna Be My Girl - is sorta general but I was imagining it when Jason and Piper kinda decide to be together/give it another go
- It’s Not Unusual - I think this was sorta the entire book/wider series but I just think it’s cute and fun and a Guardians of the Galaxy type end credits song? And just them accepting their very bizarre situation
Son of Neptune + Mark of Athena
I put these together because there wasn’t really a set bookend in my head!
Tumblr media
- Hello Stranger - finally reuniting with Percy! (and I wanted the Percy and Jason songs to mirror each other)
Hello stranger (Ooh) It seems so good to see you back again How long has it been? (Ooh it seems like a mighty long time)
- Diamonds - Hazel
- Don’t Go Breaking My Heart - Frank trusting Hazel with the wood, also Percy + Annabeth, everyone really
Don't go breaking my heart You take the weight off of me Oh, honey when you knock on my door Ooh, I gave you my key
- Beautiful Soul - I literally don’t know why I added this I just wanted an excuse to add a Jesse McCartney song (which feels so tonally correct to me?) but also I think it’s Frank liking Hazel in spite of her big secret and Percy loving Annabeth
- Pocketful of Rainbows - encountering Iris!
I don't worry Whenever skies are gray above Got a pocketful of rainbows Got a heart full of love
- Am I The Same Girl - Annabeth’s POV upon reunion!
Why don´t you stop And look me over Am I the same girl you used to know?
Why don´t you stop And think it over Am I the same girl who knew your soul?
- Bizarre Love Triangle - Frank, Hazel, and Leo
- Treasure - Hazel again + the literal treasure?
Pretty girl, pretty girl, pretty girl you should be smiling (you should be smiling) A girl like you should never look so blue (blue) You're everything I see in my dreams I wouldn't say that to you if it wasn't true
- The Sweet Escape - off on the Argo II
- Okay Okay - to Italy! and I just think Italian disco is so fun
- On An Evening in Roma - walking around Rome, seeing all its history
Though there's grinning and mandolining in sunny Italy The beginning has just begun when the sun goes down So please meet me in the plaza near your casa I am only one and that is one too few On an evening in Roma Don't know what the country's coming to But in Rome do as the Romans do Will you on an evening in Roma
- Stuck on the puzzle - Annabeth + the Mark of Athena
- Coca Cola - I was imagining the pirates+sacrifice to Dionysus/ his appearance
- Edge of Seventeen - I think Annabeth remarks to herself something like am I really going to die at 17? so this is for her and all the kids just on the cusp of being 17
And the days go by, like a strand in the wind In the web that is my own, I begin again Said to my friend, baby (everything stopped) Nothin' else mattered
- Landslide - when everything goes wrong and they start falling to Tartarus
Oh, mirror in the sky What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life?
Well, I've been afraid of changin' 'Cause I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I'm getting older too
House of Hades + Blood of Olympus
Tumblr media
these are more thematic I think? but a few moments in particular
- Head Over Heels - falling down...
I made a fire, and watching it burn Thought of your future With one foot in the past, now just how long will it last?
Something happens and I'm head over heels I never find out until I'm head over heels Something happens and I'm head over heels Ah, don't take my heart, don't break my heart Don't, don't, don't throw it away
- You and Me - Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus
If the stars don't shine If the moon won't rise If I never see the setting sun again You won't hear me cry as I testify Please believe me boy you know I would I lie As long as there is you and me
- Don’t Worry Baby - Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus, on the shore of the river
Well it's been building up inside of me For oh I don't know how long I don't know why But I keep thinking Something's bound to go wrong
But she looks in my eyes And makes me realize And she says "don't worry, baby"
- It’s Only A Paper Moon - the mist and Hazel starting to understand it
You smile, the bubble has a rainbow in it Say, it's only a paper moon Sailing over a cardboard sea But it wouldn't be make-believe If you believed in me
- Money, Money, Money - Hazel + Pluto
Money, money, money Must be funny In the rich man's world
- Magic - the whole story, but particularly with the presence of Hecate
- Summer Wind - Jason harnessing the winds!
The summer wind came blowin' in from across the sea It lingered there, to touch your hair and walk with me All summer long we sang a song and then we strolled that golden sand Two sweethearts and the summer wind
- Mala Femmina - the return of Khione
- Would You? - Leo and Calypso
Well, you know she took my hand And we walked away And I can't understand why she would stay Would you like to fall in love with me?
-  Love is Like a Fire - Leo and also Frank
- Don’t Wanna Fight - Percy and Annabeth
Take from my hand Put in your hands The fruit of all my grief Lying down ain't easy When everyone is pleasing I can't get no relief Living ain't no fun The constant dedication Keeping the water and power on There ain't nobody left Why can't I catch my breath? I'm gonna work myself to death
- Love Really Hurts With You - Leo after leaving Calypso’s island
- What Makes the Sunset - Percy and Annabeth (and by extension Bob and Damasen)
What makes the sunset? What makes the moonrise? What makes the tide remember to hide and why does it soon rise? What makes a star fall? Where does it fall to? Why does its flight make us stop in the night and wish as we all do?
- Dedicated to the One I Love - everybody, but an ode to Bob and Damasen (their goodbye made me cry!)
While I'm far away from you my baby I know it's hard for you my baby Because it's hard for me my baby And the darkest hour is just before dawn
Each night before you go to bed my baby Whisper a little prayer for me my baby And tell all the stars above This is dedicated to the one I love
- Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus, I was thinking about this post-curses and them being so done with everything
Good times for a change See, the luck I've had Can make a good man Turn bad
So please, please, please Let me, let me, let me Let me get what I want This time
- Lonely Boy - Nico
- Fantasy - indulging all their visions... the mist, etc.
- Stupid Cupid - Nico and Cupid (of course)
Stupid Cupid you're a real mean guy (stupid Cupid) I'd like to clip your wings so you can't fly (stupid Cupid) I'm in love and it's a crying shame (stupid Cupid) And I know that you're the one to blame (stupid Cupid)
Hey hey, set me free Stupid Cupid stop picking on me
- Suzanne - still Nico, looking over at the couple (sorry... all the mopey songs)
- Dream A Little Dream of Me - dreams... also Percy’s wishes of the future
Stars shining bright above you Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you" Birds singing in the sycamore tree Dream a little dream of me
- Our Day Will Come - I think Annabeth says a line almost like this? somewhere at the end of HOH, I think when they’ve just gotten out of Tartarus and are all sitting together, like haven’t they had enough? won’t their day finally come?
Our day will come If we just wait a while No tears for us Think love and wear a smile Our dreams have magic because We'll always stay In love this way
- Call Me - all of them! also Nico and Reyna, just being there for each other
Tell me and I'll be around Now don't forget me 'cause if you let me I will always stay by you You've got to trust me, that's how it must be
- Nobody - Nico... oh buddy
Venus, planet of love Was destroyed by global warming Did its people want too much too? Did its people want too much?
And I don't want your pity I just want somebody near me Guess I'm a coward I just want to feel alright
- I’m a Believer - Jason and Piper
I thought love was only true in fairy tales Meant for someone else but not for me Love was out to get me That's the way it seemed Disappointment haunted all my dreams Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer Not a trace of doubt in my mind
- Summertime - Piper singing and it being the end of summer
- Happy Trails - more singing ( I want to include the songs actually mentioned!)
- The End of the World - the big battle!!
Why does the sun go on shining? Why does the sea rush to shore? Don't they know it's the end of the world? 'Cause you don't love me any more
- Too Late To Turn Back Now - departing with Festus (I think Leo almost says this too!)
- Here Comes The Sun - day comes, the Athena Parthenos is back
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
- Walking On Sunshine - Will Solace
- Evil Woman - Gaea fight
Evil woman, how you done me wrong But now you're tryin' to wail a different song Ha, ha, funny, how you broke me up You made the wine, now you drink a cup I came runnin' every time you cried Thought I saw love smilin' in your eyes Ha, ha, very nice to know That you ain't got no place left to go
- Seven Wonders - the seven! also traveling the world... making it this far
If I live to see the seven wonders I'll make a path to the rainbow's end I'll never live to match the beauty again The rainbow's edge
- This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) - to me this is just after Annabeth and Percy’s kiss, shots of everyone back to camp, wides of people running around, new cabins under construction, the sun is shining, the camera pulls out
Loving you is some kind of wonderful Because you showed me just how much you care You've given me the thrill of a lifetime And made me believe you've got more thrills to spare, oh!
- Love Makes the World Go Round - like the end credits! last pov with Piper, love makes it all happen
Without love flowers wouldn't grow in the spring And without spring, yeah the birdies just couldnt sing Everybody needs love to watch the twinkling stars above It makes a boy and girl, Say they feel so fine, now

I’ve been looking and I couldn’t find the og post but after MOA someone said that maybe Percy and Annabeth find Ethan in tartarus and while that post did age like prince Philip I think HOH would have been way better if Ethan were there instead of Bob/Iapetus. Reasons for him being there could include the gods didn’t think he was as much of a hero as others believed or maybe before Kronos died he decided that simply dying wouldn’t be enough of a punishment,
First it would have made more sense that Ethan would have known how to get to the centre of tartarus after spending a year down there rather than Bob who had a wee splash about the Lethe. He would be familiar with Damasen because he knows allies down there are scarce so he knows how to get to the ones he has quickly. It would have been nice to see him in the house of Nyx since I think that’s his grandma. But also I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Ethan deserved a redemption arc, not a redemption page that barely did anything.
It would have been cool to see him talking with Percy and Annabeth maybe jokingly or not saying something like “sorry about the shoulder” or just having that disappointed but not surprised face at the start because if anyone was going to fall into tartarus, of fucking course it would those two. Also I don’t think he and Percy ever talked about all the life savers which I think would be nice to see.
Actually while we’re on the subject, Ethan and Percy had the potential to be really good friends. they were only friendly while Ethan was alive for about two pages and even then it was soo good and I wish we had more of them being civil with each other. Ethan was fine with dying but did not like the idea of Percy dying as well for sparring him, he immediately noticed when Percy was confused about the death match and quickly stepped up to explain; he even added some useless trivia! (Also his little “don’t mention it” when Percy thanked him always makes me soft)
But yeah, Ethan should have got to talk things over with Annabeth and Percy because I think he can be perfectly friendly when the other people in the conversation are also being friendly. After running away from the arena he was actually super chill with the gang until they started asking about him joining the “wrong side”. He yanked off his helmet, slumped against the wall and his “you people are crazy” line suggested that he was very unintimidated by them because you usually don’t use language like that unless you’re fairly comfortable with the people you’re around (or maybe that’s just me).
ALSO! Imagine if they got him out and he got to spend some time either with the argo 2 crew or team statue! Him, Nico and Reyna would have been an awesome trio (It also would have been hilarious to see him interact with coach Hedge) and it would be good for Reyna to get a point of view from one of the people who joined the titans because I don’t think the Romans would have been as civil as CHB about the traitors. I think I’ve already gone over him and the rest of the argo 2 crew so I won’t get into it but I love this concept.
Also he would have gone to Tartarus before Kronos died so he wouldn’t have known about the deal and the cabins and I really would have loved to see him react to Percy or Annabeth telling him he now has a cabin of his own to go home to and siblings to meet, maybe that could what motivates him to finally escape after being trapped by Kronos or the gods curse for a year.

The Tower of Nero
Nico twirled his s'more stick. " When I was in Tartarus the first time, somebody helped me. And I-we left him down there. I can't stop thinking about him."
"Should I be jealous?" Will asked.
"He's a Titan, dummy, " Nico said.
I sat up straight. "A Titan?"
"Long story," Nico said. "But he's not a bad guy. He's... Well, I feel like I should look for him, see if I can figure out what happened. He might need my help. I don't like it when people are overlooked."
The Tower of Nero, Pg 376-377
I'm confused?
Ok yeah Bob could be calling for help and Nico doesn't like over looking people but like why add the
"When I was in Tartarus the first time, somebody helped me. And I-we left him down there."
As far as I remember no one helped Nico in Tartarus.
Bob came when Percy called him in HOH. Maybe Damasen but like....still no mention in HOO of Nico being help by anyone. And still Bob and Damasen sacrificed themselves for Percy and Annabeth to defeat Geia and Nico didn't leave them, he was top side fighting through the House of Hades. Idk I just don't like the wording.

What Happened To Small Bob?
We see a lot of artists and writers including the little skeleton cat in moments with Nico, but I can’t exactly remember what truly happened to that cat.
I know he was in Tartarus with his namesake, Bob the titan, but did he ever leave?
Tomorrow, I’m planning on going through the House of Hades and Blood of Olympus books for an honest to god answer to my internal dilemma.
But, for now, I’m going to skim through what my memory can recall. Both about the books, when he’s mentioned, and the fanfics/artwork that include Small Bob.
I remember that Small Bob is the result of Atlas using a Saber-tooth tiger tooth, which failed because he was trying for a dino if I recall. Atlas destroyed them, and that was that until Bob found him in Tartarus. As far as I recall, we don’t see Small Bob after Percy and Annabeth leave Tartarus.
I’m an avid fanfic reader, I’ve been doing so for around 2-3 years now. This account itself is more than 2 years old. I was also originally in very few fandoms. To name them, Harry Potter, Voltron, and Percy Jackson.
I was originally on Wattpad and Fanfic.net, but a lot of fanfic haunts me there. Though I still have an old account. So I’m going to talk about what, according to the ones I’ve read, the majority of them include. They usually try including them when it’s Nico or Percy centric, bringing Small Bob back for some angst/fluff.
Small Bob is usually there to be a cute pet, when he’s included. And they keep his skills/personality basic. I know he’s a cat/tiger but animals have personalities too.
He's never mentioned in combat, although I think he fought monsters with Bob. He never does anything outside of helping to make Percy/Nico happy.
Using a slightly more specific user, Takara Phoenix, they include a bunch of characters throughout their works. They don’t include Small Bob in all of their fics, though when they do Small Bob is a tiny, domesticated cat. Now, I’m not hating. I love Takara and have been obsessed with their work for a long time. They were one of the people who inspired me to just go out and write my stories. I had bad anxiety about posting stuff, even through an anon account.
This isn’t about me though. We’re talking about Small Bob.
Now, I’m going to do a brief skim of google. 1st source I’m going to go through is the Riordan Wiki. a few things catching my attention is that we have no clue how Small Bob truly got to Tartarus, Small Bob was the last survivor of the Saber-Tooth’s, and Small Bob can switch through forms.
A small snippet directly from the Wiki says, “His fate afterward is currently unknown but like Bob and Damasen, he was presumably destroyed by Tartarus for his actions.”
Now, I’m going to talk about the first three before I get to that last snippet. We get an assumption from Percy that when Atlas told his servants to take the Saber-Tooth’s away, they were sent to Tartarus. Though it’s just an assumption. What Percy thinks isn’t solid evidence.
Though we have nothing else to use. So for now, we can only assume that Small Bob was sent to Tartarus by Atlas.
Next, Small Bob is the last surviving tiger from the Smithsonian Museum. I can’t recall the exact number that were created. Maybe 4? Anyways, if we’re assuming what we did earlier, we know they were all sent to Tartarus. So, what happened to them. Did they actually die in Tartarus? Were they just separated? The wiki doesn’t say.
Since it’s unlikely that Small Bob was the only one to survive. I am going to assume that they were just separated and no one truly knows how many survived.
Thirdly, Small Bob has 2 forms. A small, kitten form as I’ll call it, and a second large, tiger form. His kitten form, I’m assuming, is likely what everyone writes when they write Small Bob. A kitten who isn’t that strong, who is just a baby. His second form is actually something I barely recalled, if at all. It’s his attack form. He’s large, strong, not as cuddly as his tiny self is.
It’s very interesting to realize that people don’t remember or don’t prefer this large, tiger form. Because then you realize, because so many people don’t mention it or talk about it, I almost forgot it existed.
And for the final segment of the Wiki, we’re going to talk about Small Bob’s unknown ending. The wiki says that it’s unknown what happened to the saber-tooth. He could have died. Like the person who wrote this Wiki Page said. Tartarus could have destroyed them for ruining Gaea’s attempt at World Domination.
In reality, people who include Small Bob in work taking place after Tartarus are taking creative liberties. Which I fully support. I hate the idea that Small Bob died, even if it’s the most logical idea. I would love for someone to write a fic about Small Bob. Or to even include Small Bob.
Small Bob has his own tag, which only has 20 works on it. I can’t wait to go through it later, but for now, I’m writing this… whatever it’s classified as.
I did want to get through more, but there isn’t much to begin with.
There’s a Tumblr tag and Pinterest tags. But going through both briefly, we can see that they’re not very popular. Occasionally a few get popular and widespread, but those are few and definitely not as popular as some other tags get regularly.
There was this one Tumblr post about Bob and Small Bob, where they reform and get to the surface, meeting with an old Percabeth couple. I can’t find it currently, but if I do I’ll link it. It brings up his 2nd form and is quite sweet.
