Here it is. Welcome to…
The Talis-Meadows
Tumblr media
A peaceful place where Talistrums grew up in. And for fun, I amaze the pods not only a different color, but with a nice pattern on it. I love what I did with the deer one. And if anyone wants him as a Talistrum, his name is Buck (like a name for a male deer)

Clanmew Expansion Pack: Deer & Co
A guide both to the Clan Culture concept of "deer" as a classification, how several species are perceived by Clan cats, as well as a glossary of Clanmew terms for their behavior.
Tumblr media
[ID: A red deer stag stands proud next to the word, "KLEKA." Squirrelflight stands next to it, thinking the phrase, "sskif peeg-en-aayoo nomn." Roughly, "I want to eat that butt," directly, "Want: beacon-of-red stag I-will-eat"]
There are six species of "deer" (Kleka) that Clan cats see on a regular basis, five of them titanic giants that are too large to hunt as adults, and one of them just small enough to be targeted. A kleka is defined as, "a fast herbivore with long legs, ending in hard hooves."
All types of deer are big animals, with even the smallest being larger than a cat. They're most often seen in forest or open meadows, so because of this, they're typically associated with ThunderClan and WindClan.
The six species that Clan cats consider a "deer," listed with their human terms and Clanmew translation;
Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) = Aug (default) & Aayoo (stags during rut in late summer to early winter)
Fallow Deer (Dama dama) = Niaa (default) & Gruag (stags with full antlers)
Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) = Aeur
Muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) = Maa'ar
Horse (Equus ferus caballus) = Ee'ee
Sheep (Ovis aries) = Baa (default) & Bing (bell wether)
"Hey hold on a minute!" You cry, "Those last two aren't deer!"
Go ahead! Try explaining that to a cat who doesn't even know what cladistics are! It eats plants, it has swiveling ears, it has long legs and hooves, and it runs fast. What else could such a creature be? KLEKA IS KLEKA.
(Note: The Chinese Water Deer and Sika Deer are also seen in England; however, not as far north as BB's modeled regions, ergo they are not represented by Base Clanmew.)
But for the sake of organization, this guide will only cover the 'true deer,' reds, fallows, roes, and muntjacs.
Before getting into specific detail about each species, first, here's a couple more general terms for various parts of these animals.
Antler = Grek Branched, pronged horns that grow on male deer, bursting from bloody velvet. Muntjacs don't grow new antlers, but they never lose their 'velvet' either. Shed ones are valued for construction projects. A doe is an antlerless (grekwaro) deer; a buck is an antlerful (grekwang) deer.
Velvet = Gawrek (Meat + Antler) The meat that sheds off a fresh antler. Has been brought to my attention that this is full of estradiol, so, this is a very useful herb for Clan cats to use for feminine hormone treatment! For the velvet texture, "qefyyn", see here.
Horn = Greksh (Antler + Shell) Seen exclusively in sheep, named for the snail shell-like shape and fact that, after death, the horns are hollow. A cow also has greksh, but this currently goes undiscovered. NOTE: A generic horn, like the spines on a hedgehog or spikes on some insects, are called "kik"
Hoof = Kopka The hard stone-claws on the end of a Klek's leg; also seen on two other special non-klek animals; hogs and cows.
Beacon = Peeg When social deer are alarmed and running away, they follow the white flashes of each other's butts. Rabbits also have a beacon in their puffy tails! Clan cats assume that a horse's strange, hairy tail is just some sort of special beacon. It can also mean "rump," as in "rump roast."
Fawn = Myaa A baby deer that hides in grass, and does not run when approached.
Yearling = Mween A baby deer that follows its mother's side, and is now able to run if chased. The offspring of sheep and horses are already Mween just few minutes after their birth, though Clan cats don't encounter them on a frequent enough basis to have unique words for them. If used in a name, feel free to translate as 'foal' or 'lamb' at your discretion.
Herd = Klokok A large group of deer, usually only seen during rut, or in the case of horses, behind fences. Mostly used in the presence of an aggressive stag of some sort who will attack a Clan cat who bothers his does.
Tumblr media
[ID: A red deer stag and a red deer hind, with a field behind them]
We start off with the largest wild animal on this list, and the biggest creature that Clan cats see on a regular basis; the Red Deer.
The rut season is from late summer to early winter, and is the only time in the year that stags have 'antlers' which they use to fight other males for control of a herd. This is reflected in Clanmew; most of the year, all red deer are Aug, the sound of the 'bark' they use to communicate with each other.
ONLY when antlers start coming in do the stags become identified by the other term; Aayoo. Aayoo fill the forest with loud bellowing and clashing as they face off, with some Clan cats even taking the opportunity to watch these titans brawl just for entertainment.
Some Aayoo even have a distinct "Raofa" (lion mane) or "Gaofa" (cravat, tiger mane), which associates them with the legends of the Great Clans. But, eventually, the Aayoo sheds its weapons, and returns to being an Aug before the frost sets in.
They are far too large to be hunted, and most Clan cats would find it dishonorable to take their fawns if they are found hidden. They are a breathtaking and honored animal... though they do look delicious, if you ask Squirrelflight.
Tumblr media
[ID: A fallow stag shows off in front of three does, who hold up signs with various ratings. Nightstar watches on, unimpressed.]
Up next is the deer considered the most beautiful by Clan cat standards; the Fallow Deer.
Just like reds, fallows have a "default" word for those that aren't sporting any antlers; "Niaa." The call of a fallow buck is best described in English as a 'belch,' in Clanmew, they call it "Gruag."
Their behavior is quite different from red deer; instead of one male who fights off any challengers for control of a harem, they have what we call a "lek" system. Gruag will gather in one part of the territory to fight and show off against many rivals, and the Niaa come to this place to watch and pick who they like best.
side note: this is a really rare system to see in mammals and fallow deer have been studied for how unique this behavior is
They come in lots of different colors, from white, to tawny, sometimes even being such a dark brown that they appear black. These colors are beloved, noted as if StarClan themselves like to practice painting on their coats. On top of this, they're the most numerous species of deer to see.
All of these things together gives fallow deer a reputation for being "dramatic" and "fancy" by Clan culture standards, less honorable than the powerful red deer but just as noble. However, this means that their fawns are not treated with the same careful reverence as those of reds, and snatched whenever they're found hiding.
Tumblr media
[ID: A roe deer stands alone, menacingly, with a row of telephone poles behind it]
Roe deer act VERY differently from their larger cousins. A mostly solitary animal with only the presence of antlers and a smaller beacon marking a buck from a doe, Clanmew has only a single word for them; "Aeur." The sound of their very offputting 'alarm bark'.
Opportunists, roe deer will live just about anywhere they can find a small amount of forested cover, meaning they'll happily find room in just about any territory except WindClan's. In the Lake Territory, they're particularly fond of the places where fallows and reds don't have enough space, such as the SkyClan conifer patch.
Clan cats find them deeply unsettling. Though smaller than reds and fallows, a roe deer is still as large as three warriors stacked on top of each other. Males immediately re-grow their dagger-like horns as soon as the old ones fall out, never fully returning to the 'default' form. And, worst of all...
They have the same crepuscular behavior as cats do, active at dawn and dusk. Females typically raise two fawns and manage their own territories, much like a rogue. They even create simple nests which they sleep in every night.
The Clans try to keep away from them, unless they're truly starving. There are tales that those who don't believe in StarClan are doomed to exist as roe deer in their afterlives.
Tumblr media
[ID: A warrior is unsettled by a barking roe deer. It says, "ssoen his ssarababa," roughly, "holy shit," directly, "stars, shit they-say"]
Tumblr media
[ID: A muntjac walking through marshland, being stalked by Stumptail]
Probably not an animal you were expecting to see in England, huh? The Reeves' Muntjac has been an invasive problem since the 20th century, rapidly spreading across the island. Like roe deer, males have antlers while females do not, but there aren't enough differences in behavior for Clan cats to have a dedicated word for the two forms.
So, a muntjac is simply known as a "Maa'ar."
These little buggers will eat just about any plant matter, which can make them quite destructive. Bark, grass, fruits, leaves, anything. Slightly larger than a fox, their only predator is Clan cats, who consider them to be a prized quarry. Their skin creates some of the highest quality leather in all the territories, and their horns and 'tusks' are valued for decorations.
Though solitary, they can still put up a fight. Those fangs and horns aren't just for show; they can gore and kill an unwise hunter, and if that fails, they're much faster than their cutesy little loaf-shape suggests.
They're unique for many reasons, but especially in that they like wet areas. So, unlike the other types of deer, the muntjac is most often seen by ShadowClan and RiverClan. Since RiverClan doesn't have the same taste for mammalian meat that ShadowClan does, in the Lake territory, sometimes muntjac hunting rights cause conflict between the two neighbors.

they find a tamagotchi in this one
falling stars fic masterpost
Sonic didn’t sleep. He couldn’t–despite his own exhaustion, he knew it would be a huge risk to rest out in the open. So, he stayed up all night. He kept watch over Shadow until the stars began to fade from the sky, and the dark hedgehog stirred.
When Shadow awoke, he found himself tangled in a flower bed. He wasn’t pleased at the soil that fell from his quills when he sat up, but it could’ve been worse. Instead of seeing a lush meadow and bright blue sky, he could’ve been looking at the pale green walls of the haunted hospital. For that reason, Shadow decided to let it go.
Sonic looked up from the sunflower stem he was toying with. “Good morning, sunshine,” he said cheerfully.
Shadow frowned. “What did you do?”
“Nothin’ much,” was Sonic’s response. He spoke casually, his fingers still twisting the stem in his hands. “You did all the heavy lifting.”
Shadow noticed the dark circles under Sonic’s eyes, and understood. Not only had Sonic gotten them out of that ghost town, but he’d also sacrificed his own rest in order to ensure their safety. “I didn’t need to rest,” Shadow said, his frown deepening. “You shouldn’t have–”
“Yeah,” Sonic interrupted with a shrug, “but I did.” Finally, Sonic stopped fiddling with the sunflower in his hands. He had tied it to a bunch of other flowers, creating a floral circlet which he then plopped onto his head with a lopsided grin. “You had me worried back there, Stripes. When you dropped like that, I figured it was about time I took the night shift. Simple as that.”
Shadow wanted to get defensive. There was nothing to worry about, he was fine, and so on. But the truth was, he was a little concerned too. That searing pain was still fresh in his mind, and even though he was feeling better now, it bothered him not knowing what had caused it.
Of course, he had his suspicions… and that red hot energy–Chaos Energy, if that accursed ghost was to be believed–was his prime suspect.
Shadow folded his arms over his chest. “Your worry would be better spent on yourself,” he told Sonic pointedly. “Instead of a stranger.”
Propping his chin up with his hand, Sonic leaned forward and asked, “You really believe that?”
The clouds drifted lazily across the sky. There was no wind to fill the silence. Shadow knitted his brows, thinking over Sonic’s question carefully. But there were no answers to be found, since his memory was still a black hole, filled only with empty hallways and distant echoes.
In the end, Shadow responded by pushing himself to his feet. He shuffled through the flowers until he was standing right in front of Sonic, who was watching him intently. Shadow offered him his hand. “The world is a stranger to me,” he said. “You should understand that.”
Sonic took Shadow’s hand with a smile. Then, he pulled himself up. “From where I’m standing,” Sonic said, “you look pretty familiar to me.”
It wasn’t long before they were off again. Shadow headed in the opposite direction from whence they came, trying to put as much distance between them and the ghost town as he could. Hopefully, they’d be able to find a real town next, and not another horror show.
During the trek, Sonic slept soundly in Shadow’s arms. He didn’t wake until Shadow shook his shoulders several hours later. The sun was hanging high in the sky now, and the flowers had disappeared. Where there once was endless greenery, Sonic could only see dirt and heavy steel beams strewn about. It looked like a construction zone.
Crinkling his nose, Sonic said, “Looks like things have gotten pretty ugly.”
“Keep your voice down,” Shadow hissed. “We’re being watched.”
Sonic’s ears stood straight up. He looked around, but couldn’t see anything moving among the beams and orange cones except for a few ribbons of caution tape, which swayed slightly in the breeze. It was only when he looked down at the dirt that he noticed it–a dark shape hiding inside of a hollow beam about 20 feet away.
Whatever it was, it was small. And when it noticed Sonic looking at it, it retreated further back into the beam, its glowing eyes blinking rapidly.
Frowning, Sonic whispered, “Stripes, I think it’s… scared.”
Shadow narrowed his eyes. “Or, it’s bait.”
The figure trembled in the darkness. It didn’t look like bait to Sonic, but he could understand why Shadow might think that. After all, they’d already been attacked twice, and one of those times was by a building of all things. Even so, Sonic wasn’t about to turn his back on a frightened little creature.
Sonic turned to Shadow. “I wanna check it out.”
With an incredulous look, Shadow said, “What if it’s dangerous?”
Sonic countered with, “What if it’s hurt?”
Shadow pursed his lips. The intensity of Sonic’s stare read like a challenge. So, Shadow set him down.
Once he was standing, Sonic started to creep forward, toward the shadowy figure. Shadow immediately grabbed him by the arm and gave him a hard look, but Sonic just waved his hand. Compared to the parasitic paranormal threat they’d just faced, this thing was small potatoes.
When he reached the opening to the beam, Sonic sat down in the dirt. His broken leg made it impossible to crouch, so that was really his only option if he wanted to keep his eyes on the thing hiding in the darkness. It watched him with wide eyes, eyes that Sonic now realized were electronic.
“How cool is that,” Sonic whistled. “What’s a thing like you doing in a place like this?”
Shadow knelt beside Sonic. He peered into the beam with a guarded expression. So, it was a robot?
The little robot didn’t look at Shadow. It was focused entirely on Sonic, its glowing blue eyes still blinking rapidly. It was impossible to read its expression, since it had none, but it was clearly thinking hard about something. And after a few more seconds passed, it began to slowly inch forward toward the hedgehogs.
Shadow tensed, but Sonic grinned.
When the robot stuck its head out from inside of the beam, Sonic’s grin widened. “Check it out, Stripes! It’s a ladybug!”
Shadow didn’t know of any ladybugs that had claws attached to their arms. He also didn’t know of any ladybugs that rolled on a wheel instead of walked with their legs. But the little robot’s dotted red pattern was definitely ladybug-like.
Shadow was still tense. “It’s possible,” he said slowly, “that this robot is a worker here.”
Finally, the little robot looked away from Sonic. It stared at Shadow, unnerving him with its electronic gaze. But it remained silent. Maybe it was unable to speak?
“I dunno,” Sonic said, “it’s kinda small to be cartin’ around all this scrap metal. The way I see it, this little guy’s probably just lost.” He waited until the robot’s eyes were back on him before holding out his hand to it. “Don’t worry, buddy. We won’t hurt you.”
Cautiously, the little robot tapped Sonic’s finger with one of its claws. Then, it watched his eyes light up at the touch with confusion. The gears in its head were turning at mach speed. To the robot, it didn’t make any sense. None of this did. Its sensors indicated that this was Sonic the Hedgehog, but if that was true, then why was he acting like this?
When Sonic petted the motobug’s head, the poor robot just about blue screened from surprise.
“Blue, we should get moving.” Shadow suddenly said. Now that he knew the robot wasn’t a threat, he was starting to regret waking Sonic up.
The little robot’s antennas twitched. Then, it looked down at Sonic’s broken leg, and came up with an idea. Even though it was still questioning the validity of its scanners, it knew one thing for sure: Eggman wouldn’t be happy if it let the real Sonic escape.
So, the motobug tapped Sonic on the chest, and then motioned to its back. Get on, it seemed to say.
It took Sonic a second to understand, but once he did, he could hardly contain his excitement. Before Shadow could stop him, he climbed onto the back of the little robot. It was the perfect size for a Mobian rider.
“It’s not a worker, it’s a buggy!” Sonic said, snickering. “Now we’ll really be movin’! Yeah!”
Shadow looked like he was ready to send the robot to the junkyard. But after a few seconds passed and nothing bad happened, he had to admit that his reservations might be unwarranted this time. If the thing was going to transform into a giant mech bent on destroying them, surely it would’ve done so by now, instead of letting its engine purr when Sonic scratched the underside of its chin.
Exasperated, Shadow said, “Don’t get your hopes up. We haven’t seen the extent of its abilities yet.”
Sonic raised an eyebrow. Then, he looked down at the motobug, his eyes bright with excitement. “Whaddaya say, little guy? Wanna go for a test drive?”
The robot twirled its antennas and revved its engine. A race was the perfect excuse to give its processors time to sort out the mystery of the blue hedgehog’s true identity.
“Don’t hold back,” Shadow told the robot. Then, a small smirk appeared on his face when he added, “But know this–I won’t lose to you.”
Like a shot, Shadow took off toward the city skyline at the far end of the construction zone.
Sonic’s eyes widened at the cloud of dust he left behind. His heart beat fast in his chest, the challenge exciting him. He grabbed the motobug’s antennas and ushered it forward, saying, “C'mon, little buddy! Let’s show Stripes a thing or two about speed!”
The motobug chirped, and then sped off in pursuit of Shadow, with Sonic cheering the whole way.

unfortunately for silver, knuckles is still in a foul mood. having just arrived, he's angry and confused, and seeing another mobian ... well, it doesn't exactly cause the reaction one would wish for. once he spots them, passing by a large park with an even larger tree in its backdrop, he gasps, incredulous.
Tumblr media
' imposter! ' pointing a gloved hand at the hedgehog, knuckles is entirely outraged. it takes perhaps half a moment, nothing close to enough for a reaction from the other, for him to start barreling down the meadow. he's not as fast as he would like to be, powers limited to the echidna, but he's fast enough to jump at silver, sending the both of them sprawling onto the ground below.
' fool! the hedgehog is blue! you can't trick me with such a faulty disguise! '

The other’s embarrassment slowly melted away into a resigned sigh, before turning into a smile; mischievous in appearance, but nothing short of putting the sun’s radiance to shame. And then Lancelot truly felt the carefree and trusting weight, the sheer warmth of the newly crowned king’s hand in his own.
And he knew more than ever that his life now belonged to him.
Author's Notes: WOW sorry this took so long! nearly two years..... truth be told it's just been sorta sitting there but i finished up the chapter tonight (ya boy got medicated finally) and i hope to get the next one eventually too! hoping to get it out within the next 5 years /j
thanks for reading and for all the support!! ❤❤❤
Previous/Next
Lancelot came to learn that King Sonic was not fond of excessive armour.
Surely, it was made clear enough by the fact that he only sported a gauntlet most of the time during his time as a self-proclaimed knight. Though despite being crowned as king, he still insisted on minimalism.
“It’s just a little too much, y’know?” Lancelot barely picked up on words that still sounded slurred to his untrained ears, “It’s easier to run with less of that metal stuff on me.”
Said “metal stuff” lay in a carefully discarded heap in the grass by the entrance to the moat, which would undoubtedly be picked up by one of the castle’s workers after the king would accidentally forget about it. Despite being polished daily and in pristine condition, there wasn’t a soul alive in the kingdom to actually wear that armour for more than two hours a day.
“Alright, patrol time is finally over! Ready to move out, pal?” Sonic glanced back at the knight keeping a respectful distance between them, who gave a silent nod in agreement. Lancelot’s visor generally hid his face during daytime patrols – the sunlight had been stronger and brighter than usual, bouncing off dirt paths and stone walls all the same. It was a bit too harsh for the knight, who preferred the cool whispers of the evening air dancing through his black and red quills. It was quiet. It was safe.
The king technically wasn’t obligated to wear armour if he didn’t please, but Lancelot noticed that Sonic at least attempted to wear it once a week, even if it was just for show until they were out of sight from the prying eyes of townspeople. The knight assumed it was a way of balancing his lifestyle of freedom with the customs that a life as king expected from him. In a sense, Lancelot found it to be rather noble.
He could only imagine the turmoil he faced leaving his people – it became clearer each day that there was a major cost, a sacrifice, to staying in a different world as their king.
As they made their way into the open meadows, Lancelot watched the other hedgehog stretch to the best of his ability, locked hands reaching above his head suddenly swooping down to the flower-adorned grassy field under them, fingertips grazing the white straps of his well-loved ruby sneakers.
“Y’know,” He starts, posture reverting back to a casual stance as he turns towards Lancelot, “I didn’t really expect to have to wear all this bulk.”
The knight felt his frown deepen without him meaning to.
“That ‘bulk’ is a royal heirloom, passed down from monarch to monarch, your majesty.” But as soon as he processed the sound of his own voice, Lancelot regretted his tone. “…I— I beg you to forgive me for my insolence, sire.”
Sonic could only shrug, as if Lancelot hadn’t just spoken abrasively to him like he was some low-ranking squire. As if their relationship weren’t that of a legendary king and one of his many knights. As if their relationship didn’t have complexities woven into it through the gaps between each fibrous cross of thread. Impenetrable, so to speak, – not only to outsiders, but also to them.
“I mean, you’re not the same as him, but I’ve definitely heard far worse.” He smiled back at Lancelot even brighter somehow, like he didn’t have a care in the world, “Don’t sweat it, Lance.”
The knight’s expression grew even more perplexed.
“What?” Sonic stopped, expression mirroring Lancelot’s own, or at least whatever he could make out through his visor, “Surely that painfully abrasive tone meant that you’re a little more comfortable around me right?” He said with a sarcastic grin, motioning with a nod of his head for them to keep moving and conversing.
“That’s a good thing then! You can let your quills down and be as casual as you want, and in return I can give you a nickname. That sound like a fair trade?” Sonic laughed breezily, grazing the back of his hand against Lancelot’s arm in a half-hearted but friendly nudge.
Warmth stirred in Lancelot’s chest at his words, at his touch; like a sweet nectar that trickled down his parched throat and made him feel alive.
“You know, back home I have a friend who goes by a nickname. He’s like a brother to me, so nicknames came pretty naturally after I met him.” He spoke fondly, not catching the way he had Lancelot’s attention rapt thoroughly and genuinely, “His full name is Miles Prower, but we all call him Tails. Actually, he looks a heck of a lot like the blacksmith we have back in town! A kind and brilliant kid… just like him.”
Lancelot tried to crumple the odd feeling he got at the mention of “brother”. The conversation had more or less settled into its usual back and forth of the day as they continued strolling through the field of sweet violets; admittedly, one of Lancelot’s favourite parts of each day.
Usually these hours were somewhat one-sided conversations, but only in the sense that the king loved to talk, and Lancelot was more than content to listen and affirm. Though, he kept silent mostly out of respect and necessity – he had a responsibility to focus and protect the king, after all.
But today, when the winds are quiet and gentle and the skies bloom with iridescent clouds above them, somehow everything shifted on its axis again; for once, Lancelot was willing to finally hold up his end of the conversation. His heart throbbed loudly in his throat, in his ears, as he took a few short breaths and practiced his next few words in his head.
“I… have a sister.”
There. He said it.
He breathed her back into existence, and never again could she be kept buried deep inside of his soul.
The king slowed his pace, glancing to the side at Lancelot who still kept his eyes hidden under a visor. “Yeah? That’s really nice to hear!” Sonic immediately perks up, livelier than ever at the fact that his favourite knight companion was finally, finally opening up to him, “What’s she like? How old is she?”
Lancelot’s hand slowly reached up to his visor, hovering by the edge as he contemplated, before lowering his arm again and letting it settle by his side, not catching the way the king’s ears drooped slightly at his actions. He let a smile play on his lips instead, reminiscing about sky blue and moonlit gold.
“She’s… a good person, and she’s a little older than me. Full of love; always eager to share it with those around her, even if that means giving up parts of herself.” Lancelot spoke wistfully, affectionately, and in the back of his mind he realized that this was the most he’d ever divulged to anyone about her, “Whenever she’d scold me, there was never any harshness to it – even that was always out of love. She wasn’t perfect of course, but to me she was the closest anyone could ever be. More than anything, I… I think I miss her stories and her mischief the most.”
“Oh… what happened to h—” Sonic’s eyes widened in realization as bit his own tongue into silence, shaking his head and hastily covering up his tracks, “I’m so sorry— please disregard that, you really don’t have to answer anything you’re not—”
“…It was illness, your grace.” He solemnly answered.
“And it’s alright, please do not apologize. We live in difficult times, after all.” He gave the king a small smile, though he didn’t doubt that he could see right through his mournful expression, “I do miss her dearly, but… now that I have shared a piece of her – proof of her existence and a piece of my soul with someone like you, I do not think she will be forgotten so easily.”
The king comes to a standstill and turns to face the other, and it’s only then that Lancelot’s mind catches up with the gravity of what exactly he’s said. He hadn’t said enough to betray how he truly feels, surely, but he can’t help but feel his joints lock up anyway. The first emotion that rushes to him is dread, but then he remembers who Sonic is in the first place, takes in his charming smile in a single brave glance, and relief cleanses every bit of dread out of his system.
“Still…” The king steps closer, reaching out and letting his hand gently hold onto the other’s arm. It takes every bit of self-control Lancelot had been taught in training to not have a visceral reaction at the contact, “I really am sorry for your loss.”
But Lancelot had not been prepared for the faraway look in Sonic’s eyes as soon as he chanced a glimpse at his face. There was something… unreadable. Almost sorrowful in its nature; although something told him that King Sonic wasn’t just mourning the loss of his sister.
For the first time in his life, he didn’t want to listen to his gut feeling.
As quickly as his expression had come, it was gone like the wind, replaced with another casual smile. A rare glimpse of his walls unguarded. Lancelot thinks carefully – but even if Sonic was going to pretend that nothing happened, he couldn’t let it go so easily. The knight wills his heart to settle before taking the dive.
“Do you miss it?” He finally says it, quiet enough that the other could disregard him if he so pleased. “Do you miss your home world, sire?”
“I…” Sonic opens his mouth, then shuts it with a shake of his head, as if to shake an unwanted thought out of his mind, “Nah, I’ll go anywhere an adventure takes me.”
But somewhere in his heart, Lancelot felt that he wouldn’t.
He would tire of this adventure.
He would tire of his duties.
He would tire of this world.
Would a free soul like King Sonic be able to bear the crushing weight of a kingdom in pain? His kindness had seemingly no end in sight, but for how long until he runs on empty? How long until he may have to realize that there were more mouths to feed than plates to give? Or worse: more sick people than there were beds in monasteries? Would Sonic give out pieces of himself at that point, or would he have the courage and humility to step down?
Rather, would Lancelot be able to bear the sight of seeing the king’s spirit broken until it was a mere ghost of what it used to be?
“You’re thinking way too hard about this,” Sonic spoke somberly, as if reading the other’s mind. “I’ve got no plans to leave just yet.” Lancelot felt his heart leap out of his chest from being caught off guard. “Did… you hear what I just said?” he paused, “Sire, did you perhaps use witchcraft to listen in?”
Sonic stopped in his tracks, turning on his heel with an incredulous look on his face only to find that Lancelot was completely genuine. He laughed, bright and lively.
“No, of course not. I just have decent intuition… erm, sometimes.”
They continued in silence for some time, taking in the scenery around them and Sonic carefully stepping around the flowers the best he could. Things continued as normal, walking side by side for once instead of Lancelot acting as King Sonic’s tail. They watched the sun slowly dip closer to the horizon – but there were still many hours left of the day, and many more hours to spend with each other. The thought alone made his heart squeeze for a moment, and he selfishly let his mind wander with thoughts about the other world, wondering if he could ever be a part of it, even if only in his dreams.
And then, against all odds, Lancelot made a request for the first time.
“Your majesty, if you don’t mind… could you tell me more about your world?”

Another month had passed peacefully.
The king and Lancelot had gone on their patrols together as usual, Lancelot never needing to prod Sonic for answers about his world, as the latter happily indulged him with hours upon hours of grand adventures and small tidbits about his dear group of friends, and occasionally, rivals. It was the one time in the day, besides the mere minutes he spends in his chambers before inevitably crashing from exhaustion, where he felt like he could truly let his guard down and be free.
Lancelot smiled to himself. Even under the rule of a king, he felt free for the first time in years.
In the present day, King Sonic had an audience with the duke of a neighboring kingdom, accompanied by Merlina. Though one of the knights generally accompanied the king, he insisted that he could manage the meeting this time, especially with Merlina’s assistance. Lancelot casually shrugged – another unique quirk that he adapted from Sonic through his behaviour and his stories alone, although he made sure to only ever do it when the two of them were alone. It makes him both nervous and happy that he’s able to learn so much from him, that he’s able to grow even closer to him as his right-hand – his most trusted knight.
Both Sir Gawain and Sir Percival had invited Lancelot to a sparring match between the three of them, as a means of refining their skill over the course of the meeting, as well as during Sir Lamorak and Sir Galahad’s absence. If he had recalled correctly, the two of them had been sent on a great expedition.
Percival and Gawain clashed viciously, sparks flying as they both met their match. Sir Percival knew all the right points to hit; she had a keen eye for weakness and vulnerability, which meant that letting one’s guard down could be fatal within seconds of realizing it. The latter had to be the most powerful of the knights – sheer, raw, energy channelled directly into Galatine as he threw himself head on towards Percival. Lancelot personally preferred a more strategic method of fighting, but even he couldn’t deny that his strength had the potential to overwhelm him.
He stares up at the overcast sky, already missing how blue it was that day he had a heart-to-heart with his king. As the other two finish their match, with Percival as the victor, his gaze eventually settles on the dirt floor before him. Now that he really thinks about it, before he met Sonic, he’d… never really noticed these things about the others.
“…Do you know if the rumors about the king are true or not, Sir Percival?” Sir Gawain was the first to speak, chest heaving from their intensive sparring match.
Lancelot’s head shot up from the ground, any fluttering thoughts screeching to a halt as he stood from his place on the bench.
“Sir Gawain, I do not wish to partake in the spread of—”
“Rumors…?” Lancelot interrupted, taking the other two knights by surprise. It was rare enough for the black hedgehog to speak, let alone intrude on a conversation. Gawain cleared his throat, looking hesitantly between Lancelot and Percival, before he continued, “Yes, I thought… you might have already known, given that you are closest to King Arth— I mean, King Sonic.”
Lancelot continued to look onto Gawain in questioning silence, his breath caught in his throat.
“King Sonic is said to depart back to his world in a week’s time.”
Everything slowed down to a crawl for Lancelot, and he couldn’t fathom why. It was a simple sentence, but one that had the power to shatter his entire world.
A week’s time? He couldn’t be serious. It just didn’t make sense to him how or why everything was happening so suddenly.
But more than anything, even if it wasn’t true, why couldn’t Lancelot simply be happy for the king returning to his beloved home? Nausea brewed inside him, twisting and thrashing around in his stomach – anger only adding acid to the mix as he stormed up to the other knights, eyes locked onto the red echidna.
“Sir Gawain.” Lancelot says coldly, looking straight at Gawain’s confused expression and feeling relief in the back of his mind that he left Arondight propped against the bench. He didn’t know what he would do if he brought it with him. What had King Sonic even done to him to make him feel this way? “If these allegations prove to be false, and lest I find that you show yourself to be the perpetrator of these lies… there will be consequences.”
“What… do you mean by ‘consequences’?” Gawain’s look of confusion sharply morphed into one of intimidation, shoulders tense and letting out a low rumbling growl under his breath as if to challenge the other knight, “Tell me, do you doubt me, as your fellow knight? Do you doubt the loyalty I have for our king?”
Something ached inside Lancelot’s very core. Whether it was burning him up inside or settling him with a pit of grief, he couldn’t begin to differ.
“That is quite enough.”
Percival speaks up next, deep and commanding – enough to make them less tense, but not enough to break their unwavering eye contact, ruby upon amethyst in a deep scowl.
“If you are not guilty of any such crimes, then you shouldn’t feel the need to bare your teeth back at me.”
But Lancelot was the first to quickly mellow, the guilt setting inside him and taking the anger’s place as he realized that he was being impossibly defensive, far enough to threaten a fellow knight. It gnaws at him, because he knows well enough that he’ll regret this action in the coming hours – especially if the king hears about it.
He steps back, giving up and tearing his gaze away from Gawain in defeat as he clenches his jaw, heartbeat in his ears loud enough to make them twitch.
“All I was… —all I am ever after, is protecting our king’s honour.” Lancelot watches Gawain lower his guard as well, rage fading from his features as he also takes a step back, seemingly willing to listen. “I will not let his image falter.”
“That is all there is to it.” He lied.

✩ Sonic pulls out all the stops for your dates. One time he reserved an entire meadow just for the two of you to have a picnic—he asked Cream to make you this adorable, special flower crown, chose the biggest blanket he retained so that way the food could overflow it and you’d still have room to lay down, and he even got a bunch of Chao to perform a one-of-a-kind song.
After having gone through all that work to surprise you, Sonic was expecting you to swoon and gush and fall even more deeper in love with him—and you certainly did!—but when you arrived in a blue outfit with a container brimful of your homemade chili dogs, it was him who found his heart fluttering with adoration.
✩ If there’s ever anything you want and you voice it, Sonic’s feet are already dashing to go and get it for you. It doesn’t matter how hard or rare the item is, he’ll search every store and spot imaginable for you; just so that he can see your beautiful smile as he hands you the gift.
There’s nothing too good for you! And this also extends to things you’ve mentioned in passing, too. He actually has a great memory for all things related to you, the information etching on his heart so he can keep making you happy forever.
✩ Sonic loves having you as his little spoon! The sensation of enveloping every inch of you in his arms as he keeps you pressed flush against his chest, his strong frame sheltering you from the world outside him, sends him over the moon. If he has anything to ramble about, you listen and giggle at his stories… it makes him absolutely exultant when you do. You’re both just enjoying each other’s company, and he couldn’t ask for more on a starry night.
Besides kicking back after an adventure, this is one of the only times you can see Sonic contently settled down for longer than a few minutes; and it’s definitely only for you.
✩ Because Sonic knows you’re fragile, he’s extremely overprotective when it comes to your safety. When any sort of danger is around, he can’t keep you away from his side; his body sliding in front of you to act as a shield between you and the threat. “Stay close to me,” he’ll tell you, “I’ll protect you. Nothing will come close to hurting you when I’m around!”
And due to his vigilance for you, Sonic can find it difficult to hand you over to others and relay on them to safeguard you. Despite what he might say, Sonic is exceptionally attached to you…
✩ It’s hard for Sonic to be apart from you, and he can get super agitated and paranoid when he can’t keep a constant eye on you and your well-being. What if something happens to you when he’s not around? Will he really be able to get to you in time before the worst happens? The sort of thoughts that don’t usually plague Sonic do when it comes to you.
The idea of losing you, or you getting hurt in any way, causes Sonic to act aggressively; and he’s much, much harsher to his opponents if they’ve endangered you at all.
“If [Name] doesn’t wake up by the time I defeat you, I’ll make sure you won’t either.”
✩ Sonic, out of desperation for your welfare, will sometimes make you second guess your decisions. “Is that really a good idea? What if X shows up? You know you’re not good at dealing with that…” And he definitely comes across as manipulative, trying to sway you into either staying home or at least bringing him along with you.
Sonic’s obsession with you and your protection makes him clingy and overbearing to you at times, but he’ll make sure every single need you have is fulfilled♡
