Random Daredevil (TV) Headcanons
> Matt has, like, a dozen bottles of hydrogen peroxide in his apartment at all times, because, unlike what most people think, blood is easy to get out of fabric if you take it out with hydrogen peroxide completely before putting it through the wash. Matt knows this and stays well stocked.
> Foggy always has a hair elastic for when his hair is annoying him. Karen knows this and absconds with them regularly.
> Matt hates clicky pens. One time in law school the guy sitting next to him in class would not stop clicking one and Matt snatched it out of his hands and snapped it in half. No one would sit near Matt for two weeks after that. Foggy found it hysterical.
> Sometimes on sunny summer days Matt goes to another part of the city in 'regular' sunglasses, just so he can walk around for a while without having to think about how he's percieved.
> On slow days at the firm Karen and Foggy make a game of throwing random objects at Matt, who always catches them. The 'game' ends when Matt finally gets annoyed enough to (carefully) throw something back or just keep whatever it is. Foggy has had to replace his stapler three times now.
> Matt has his own 'slow day' game, which is just throwing pencils in the air so they wedge themsevles into the drop ceiling in his office. It makes Karen crazy but he manages some pretty nice designs, so she always takes a photo before making him take them all down.
> One time when Matt, Karen, and Foggy were hanging out at Matt's place they got drunk and Foggy put on the Daredevil mask/helmet and Matt and Karen used her collection of hair elastics she pilfered from Foggy for an impromptu game of ring toss using the horns.
> Karen discovers that Matt is really good at braiding hair and always makes him braid hers on hot days. Foggy manages to cajole Matt into braiding his hair twice.
> Foggy's mom always says she wishes Foggy became a butcher, but she's actually really proud of his work as a lawyer. When he graduated from law school she spent a ridiculous amount of money on having his degree framed nicely, and it hangs on the wall behind the counter so she can point it out to customers and brag.
> Foggy stayed really attached to the Maverick and Goose thing, and now sometimes when they win a tough case him and Matt exchange a windmill high five.
BONUS: Defenders Headcanons
> Sometimes Danny uses his fist as a flashlight.
> Jessica hates birthdays, but one year Matt gets her scarf with the word ASSHOLE printed down the length of it as a joke and now it's her favorite scarf.
> Luke lets Danny harrangue him into giving him a piggyback ride one time and now Danny won't stop asking for another and Luke has *regrets*.
> One time Danny bounces a quarter off Matt's ass on a dare from Claire. Matt then bounces it off Danny's head.
> Matt, Luke, and Danny sometimes play a drinking game that involves taking a shot every time Jess says 'fuck'. The game never lasts long.

MAD AT GOD - MATT MURDOCK
Tumblr media
season 2b - ain’t it fun
Tags: @johnmurphys-sass @ironprincessstranger @americaarse @dusstory @mayasaurus--rex @astrobees // four // six // masterlist
Pairing: Matt Murdock x Reader
Word Count: 5,228
Summary: The rapid rollercoaster of the Hand’s latest plot goes into sudden free fall and your small group of Defenders is forced to make a drastic move to save NYC.
You woke up in an awkward position in a chair in a police station. You got yourself up in a hurry, nearly tripping over a nearby coffee table. You glanced around in a panic, patting the back of your belt and your wrist. Your handheld blade was gone but your retractable was still there. Oddly enough, you were more relieved that you hadn’t had that one taken. You rubbed the skin under your nose and winced as your knuckles hit the tender area. Dried blood flaked off so you sniffled and scrunched your nose until the ache went away and you felt you could breathe clearly.
You turned and found Matt on the couch on the opposite side of the room. You hurried over and woke him gently, though he got up in the same panic you did.
“Hey! Hey, you’re okay!” You said quickly, grabbing his arms and pulling him in for a tight embrace.
After a moment’s hesitation, he wrapped his arms around your waist and buried his face in the crook of your neck.
“Are you okay?” He asked when he pulled away, hands coming to either side of your face.
“Yeah, I’m alright.” You nodded and put a hand to the back of your head, under your hair to feel the collection of dry blood against your scalp. You frowned slightly and wiped your hand on your pants, but your fingers met with a series of frayed strings. You glanced down and saw an angry red gash against your leg that had begun to heal. “Could be worse, I guess.”
You jumped as the door flew open and you turned to see Foggy come into the room. You sighed in relief and Foggy came to give you a quick embrace.
“Where are we?” Matt asked quickly as you came back to his side.
“Harlem precinct. Private office.” Foggy explained. “I’m glad you’re both okay. Claire gave you guys a quick once-over and nothing’s broken, even though you both looked like hell.”
“She wasn’t trying to kill us.” You spoke quietly, rubbing the back of your head and feeling the thick thread of stitches. You thought it ironic that stitches to the back of your head was how you met Claire in the first place.
A lot of full circle moments happening recently.
“I wasn’t wearing the suit.” Matt breathed in relief as he sat in a nearby chair, taking your hand and pulling you to sit on the arm beside him. You gingerly ran your fingers through his hair and he sighed softly.
“I know… There is a God after all.” Foggy joked and you smiled slightly. You were in part relieved that Matt wasn’t in the suit, given that it could’ve exposed his secret. But you also wondered if he would’ve fared better against her with it. Then again, you wouldn’t have gotten as close to killing her as you did.
It still felt wrong to think of killing Elektra.
“We need to go.” Matt patted your leg and your attention was drawn back. “He’s in danger.”
“Yeah.” You nodded. “But we need everyone else.”
“Who?” Foggy asked quickly.
“Danny Rand. They took him.”
“The billionaire?”
“Stick.” He sighed sadly and dropped his head against your side. “She killed Stick.”
“I’m sorry, Matty.” You said softly, gently rubbing your thumb across his cheek. He sniffled slightly and turned to press a thankful kiss to the palm of your hand. “I tried but…”
“No, I know. It’s okay.. I’m okay.” He nodded slightly and blew out a sigh before he stood . “They um- Yeah, they took Danny. We have to save him from the Hand.”
You stood with him.
“No. You are in no position to save anybody.” Foggy said firmly and blocked you both. “They haven’t pressed charges but they found you both in a room with two dead bodies.”
“I don’t have a choice. He’s the Iron Fist.”
“I’m not gonna pretend to know what that means.”
“Foggy, the person who did this, who took Danny… It’s Elektra.”
“Your ex-girlfriend?”
“He’s telling the truth.” You said, remembering the words she spoke to you before she went after you and the thought of her voice sent a shiver down your spine.
You cannot take him from me.
At least Foggy tried to remind him that Elektra was his past.
“She’s dead.”
“She’s not, not anymore.” Matt sighed.
“The Hand has some resurrection ritual and they brought her back..” You told Foggy before turning to Matt. “I heard them talk about needing more of a substance so maybe that’s what they need Danny for. He unlocks something for them so this could be it.”
“Y’know, Y/N/N. When I saw them bring in him, I wasn’t surprised. But you…”
“Foggy, I-“
“I’m glad you’re okay but this isn’t your fight.”
“I can’t let him do this alone.” You answered firmly. “Especially if it’s El.”
“You do realize that you were stabbed and your head was split open? That you were unconscious?”
“I know how it looks but-“
“There is no but!” He cut in suddenly, and you had to take a step back. “Do you not understand how dangerous this is? You’re not him, Y/N. You shouldn’t be doing this!”
It was odd to have Foggy yell at you. Arguments with Karen over your vigilante work was expected, even a part of your routine at that point. But Foggy. You hardly ever heard him yell in general. You realized then just how much not knowing you were more than capable of keeping pace with Matt as Daredevil worried him. And it made you feel terrible. It also worried you even more about how he would take your reveal.
“It doesn’t matter.” Matt said, gently pulling you to his side. “Whatever they’re gonna do with Danny Rand, it’s not good for anyone.”
The conversation was halted when the Detective that you remembered from your first meeting with Jessica came into the room. Foggy offered you an apologetic expression but you didn’t acknowledge it. He was right and you knew it. Without him knowing your alter ego, it would be insane for you to get involved against the Hand. But it wasn’t the right time to tell him in the middle of a precinct. You blew out a sigh and moved across the room, pacing in a small area near the sofa.
You were thinking of Elektra and why she hadn’t killed you. Clearly, she didn’t care for you. She blamed you for her death and you had accepted that. It broke you every time you thought about it but it was true enough.
It was your fault Elektra Natchios died. But you wouldn’t take responsibility for whatever the Hand replaced her with.
You knew it was only for Matt’s sake. She saw the way he cared for you, the way you spoke of him. She had to have understood that Matt loved you, so killing you would’ve only drove him away. As twisted as it was, at least you were alive.
“Ms. Y/L/N?” The detective called, making you stop your movements. “Care to add anything?”
“No.” You said simply, though you weren’t really sure what had already been said. “Am I being charged with anything?”
“You’re a witness to a murder, same as him.”
“I got my ass knocked out.” You scoffed. “What am I supposed to be able to tell you?”
“You could talk about that stab wound.” She gestured to your leg.
“Don’t remember.” You shrugged.
“And the back of your head?”
“Probably when I lost consciousness. I don’t know.”
“Tell me, Y/L/N. Is all of that blood yours?”
You pressed your lips into a line and shrugged quietly, the small act of defiance spiking her annoyance with you.
“Y’know, it’s interesting…. You clearly know some of the people here.”
“And why does that matter?” Your brows furrowed.
“Because they’re here cause they need protection. Because someone cares about them… But you were never here.”
“Detective, I’m gonna ask you to stop while you’re ahead.” Your skin began to feel warm under your sweater.
“Y/N..” Matt said softly, probably picking up on the slight uptick of your heartbeat.
“Just makes you think, doesn’t it? Whoever cares about the people you know doesn’t seem to care about you as much… Do they?”
“I don’t have answers for you, Detective. You can’t bully information out of me when I don’t have it. Now if you’ll excuse us, I’d like to talk to my lawyer-“ You gestured to Foggy. “-and my boyfriend-“ You gestured to Matt. “- in private.”
“You can talk all you want.” She nodded slightly. “When we’re done. And you can change into this. We need your sweater for the blood samples.”
She gestured to the open door where two cops were waiting before she threw a t-shirt at you, matching the one Matt wore. You scoffed and stepped to the back of the room and turned away from the prying eyes, discreetly pulling your retractable from your wrist and shoving it into the front of your waistband before changing your shirt. You felt everyone - save for Matt’s - staring at your back, scanning for some sort of injuries or clues and you assumed the worse they could see would’ve been old scars and some bruises. Maybe a few welts and red marks. You looked the detective in the eye and dropped the sweater to the ground at her feet as you walked by.
As you were led down the hall, you met with Luke and Jessica. Your small group was led to a secluded room with the door shut behind. You huffed a sigh and leaned against the far wall, arms crossed while the detective and another officer tried to weasel information - or more likely a confession - out to you.
“Captain, my clients are exhausted and under extreme emotional distress. I’m sure you can understand how much they need to go home.” Matt urged and you chuckled under your breath.
“I’m not sure you understand the severity of the situation.” The Captain argued. You pushed off the wall and moved to Matt’s side at that point, putting your hand on his shoulder and his hand meeting your lower back.
Before you could say anything, Luke told them the basics. You sighed inwardly and dropped your forehead against Matt’s arm. You felt his shoulder shake with a small chuckle before he patted your back.
You lifted your head and he nodded to you. You took a few steps away and leaned against an empty desk on the other side of the room, growing more and more annoyed with the pestering of the officers. You noticed that the captain was getting aggressive with Matt so you lifted your hand. Your fingers twitched and toyed with his emotions, allowing him to agree with Detective Knight and leaving the room.
The detective was taking you all to another area when you ran into Karen.
“Detective, can I borrow Ms. Y/L/N? Just for a minute.” She asked as you all walked by.
“Yeah, I’ll be right there.” You nodded to the group and waited till they were out of earshot before you said anything else.
“Hey.” She smiled softly. “What um- What’s going on?”
“Wait. I just.. Karen, I’m sorry.” You said honestly. “It wasn’t fair for me to just show up and expect you be go along with this out of nowhere.”
“No, it’s okay.” She reached for your hand. “It was just a lot to take in and now.. I shouldn’t have been so mean about it… And Foggy was asking about you.”
“Shit. What’d he say?”
“Just wondered where you were, why Matt didn’t bring you here.”
“Did you say anything?”
“Uh, yeah, actually. I blamed your boss.”
You couldn’t help but laugh and she smiled, despite the worry she felt.
“Y/N, what’s going on? It seems really bad and it’s only a matter of time before they start to put things together.” She said gently, the concern dancing in her words.
“Yeah, I know.. The detective, I don’t think she suspects me but there’s a few eyes on Matt right now and I don’t like it.” You spoke honestly.
“I just…” She sighed. “I don’t get it. You two were finally rebuilding your lives.”
“This is part of our lives.” You shrugged slightly. “As much as we thought we could just pack it up, it found a way to suck us back in. You didn’t always hold that against me.”
She sighed and dropped her eyes.
“Y’know, I’ve lost a lot of people with this life. I don’t wanna lose you too but… I can’t sit here and have this argument with you because I’m not going to change my mind.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Yes, it is.” You laughed slightly. “You don’t want us to do this anymore and that’s fine. I get it. I know it’s a lot to handle and it’s stressful and it’s not fair to assume you’d stay around through it all. But we have to do it. A lot of people are going to die if we don’t. Hell, people have already died because of this.”
“But it doesn’t make sense! How did you two even-“
“Look, Karen, I can’t sit here and apologize and explain every minuscule detail to you all night. Alright? I won’t apologize for doing what I feel I have to do. So if you’re pissed at me and him, fine. But you don’t get to threaten me with choosing our friendship or this.”
“I’m not trying to give you an ultimatum, alright?”
“Then why did you pull me aside? I know you can find out anything to need from everyone else here.”
Silence.
“Exactly… I have to go.” You patted her arm and hurried to meet with Matt and the rest of your team down the hall, despite Karen calling you back.
“Everything okay?” Jessica asked carefully after you slammed the door shut behind yourself.
You looked over for a second before sitting on the arm of Matt’s chair. You took a deep breath and found nothing came to the surface. You weren’t angry about your conversation with Karen. You weren’t worried. You weren’t happy. You were just… done. You were tired of hiding who you were and apologizing for it.
“We need to figure out how we get out of here.” You said instead of dwelling on that mildly worrying idea.
“Yeah, well, we’re only here because his ex-girlfriend almost killed every one of us.” Luke pressed and you ground your teeth. At least he said ex this time.
“Did she take Danny or did she kill Danny?” Jessica asked quietly.
“I don’t know.” Matt sighed and you put a hand on his shoulder. “But if what Stick said is true, and they didn’t leave his body behind, we have to believe they need him alive.”
“He is alive.” You nodded, eyes focusing on Matt’s hands in his lap as you opened up for his emotions. You learned Danny had a specific emotional signature early on and you chalked it up to his special hand. “He’s scared cause he’s alone, doesn’t know if we’re alive or of we’re trying to find him. Doesn’t know if Elektra’s gonna kill him…”
“Before you showed up, the old man was trynna slice him wide open.” Luke added. “And you can, what? Feel him?”
You nodded quietly with a small shrug while Matt talked.
“Stick must’ve known what the Hand was planning on doing with the Iron Fist.”
“You don’t think he would’ve told us? Or at least you.” You tried.
“I don’t know.” He sighed, partly in resignation and the other part in sadness. “But maybe he didn’t either.. Can you tell anything about the place?”
“The feeling is echoing, like it’s coming from somewhere deep and hollow so it’s ricocheting.”
“Midland Circle.”
“What did you come back with from the architect?” You looked to Jessica.
“He was planning to blow the building.” She answered quickly. “Collapsing it straight down into the hole. There were some blueprints in the piano.”
“So what are we gonna do about it?” Luke asked as he stood.
“Let’s just blow the building.” You shrugged. “They have all the explosives here. If someone can cause a scene, I can-“
“I just got out of jail!” Luke insisted. “They don’t even know who you two are!”
Matt jumped up and went to the door, seconds before someone knocked. Foggy was at the door and dragged Matt outside and while you were tempted to eavesdrop due to his urgency, you were pulled back to your conversation with Luke.
“If you don’t wanna blow the building, I can do it myself. Wouldn’t be the first time.” You offered and you were given looks of disbelief. “It was a vendetta thing.” You shrugged. “Here’s the plan. You guys can get in and find Danny. Once you’re all clear, I take it down. Any heat comes from it and it falls on her.” You made a vague gesture to where your mask would sit.
You saw Foggy push a bag into Matt’s hands so you moved over to the door and cracked it, just enough so you could be nosy while Jessica turned and talked to Luke.
“I don’t know why her stuff was in your apartment but I’m guessing you can get it to her.” Foggy said with a sigh.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, I will.” Matt nodded as his hand felt around inside the bag.
“As long as you’re not cheating on Y/N with her.”
“Foggy, c’mon.”
“What? You gonna try and tell me that Y/N is her?”
“I- .. That’s not what I’m saying. And I promise, I’m not cheating on Y/N.”
“Good.” Foggy said with finality. “Because Y/N would probably beat the hell out of you for that and I’d let her.”
You smiled to yourself slightly and went back to your original conversation.
“None of that matters if we can’t get out of here.” Jessica complained.
“Yeah, no shit.” You scoffed. “My offer stands about blowing the building.”
“Y’know what, you little pyro.” She turned to you and you gave an innocent shrug. “You’re not blowing the building.”
“Well then you’re not gonna like the only other way this is gonna end.”
“You need to tell Foggy when this is over.” Matt said simply as he came back in, quickly flashing the inside of a bag where both of your suits were shoved inside. “He said that either this is you or I’m sleeping with her.”
“Both are true.” You nodded. “We get out of this alive, I’ll tell him everything.”
“Look, back to what’s actually important.” Jessica emphasized and you rolled your eyes slightly.
“Whatever we have to tell these cops, we need to get to Midland Circle.” Luke finished.
“So how do we get out of here?” You asked and turned to glance around.
You paused and moved closer to the wall, trying to remember the shape of the building and the path you took to the room. You pressed your hand flat against it and knocked with the other, noticing it wasn’t a dense sound.
“Matt. Bring me the bag.” You gestured behind yourself until you felt the straps land in your hand. You rummaged through it until your fingers closed around your mask. Holding it to your eyes, you scanned the wall. “It’s not load-bearing and it leads straight out. We can get out this way.”
“You sure about this?” Jessica asked, suddenly at your side.
“No…” You turned to her with a shit-eating grin that she frowned at. “You got a better idea?”
After exchanging looks, Luke and Jessica knocked a hole in the wall. You four hurried through and headed towards the building, but the patrolling cop cars forced you to duck into the closest alley. Matt explained the APB and the thought that you and Matt were kidnapped. You almost laughed at the idea.
Jessica led your group down to the subway where you rode the last few blocks in general silence. She took a beer from a passed out homeless man and you ignored the pinging of a phone call in your implant. Instead, you leaned against Matt’s shoulder for the trip and just took the time to enjoy his company.
The back of your mind couldn’t ignore the question burning there. Would Matt choose Elektra over you?
You wanted to say no. You wanted to be sure that Matt was yours, that Elektra was the past. But something was still there. Something that was just enough to potentially pull him away from you.
When you reached Midland Circle, you and Matt ducked into the nearest alleyway to change. You were shrugging on your pack when Matt finally spoke.
“You’ve been quiet since we left the precinct.” He said simply.
“Not much to say.” You said softly as you kept your attention on piecing your accessories in their places. “You haven’t been very conversational either.”
“Y/N, I know you. I can tell something’s bothering you. You’re practically vibrating.”
“Yeah, something is bothering me a little.” You nodded, slipping your retractable back to the inside of your wrist and fitting your Bite over it. “But if I say anything about it, you’re going to tell me that there’s nothing to worry about. That what I keep thinking isn’t what’s actually going to happen.”
“So why worry in the first place?” He asked gently. You made a small noise of annoyance and clipped your belt around your waist. As you were reaching behind to check what knives were still in place, Matt’s hands wrapped around yours, stealing your attention. “C’mon, Sweetheart. Talk to me.”
You sighed slightly and he took a small step closer.
“You’re going to try and save her.” You said simply and his brows furrowed. “Normally you being the hero is a good thing but… You know I loved her, too. If I could go back to that night and trade my life for hers, I would.”
“Y/N..”
“But I can’t.. This isn’t Elektra anymore. The girl we knew would never have killed Stick, even if she was pissed, because of what he meant to you. She wouldn’t have put a sword to my chest with serious intent. She’s gone, Matt. We can’t save her. There’s nothing in her that I can use to change that.”
“That’s what you’re worried about?” He offered an apologetic smile and you groaned softly. “Y/N, you are my priority. Alright? I have to try and help Elektra because I know there’s some part of her still in there.”
You sighed in annoyance and pulled your hands away gently and checked your belt while he talked.
“But it’s not because I still love her.”
“But you do.” You said simply as you knelt to grab your mask out of the bag. You hung your arms over your upraised knee and looked up at him. “Don’t you?”
He knelt in front of you and put his hands on either side of your face.
“I love you, Y/N. I am in love with you.” He insisted, giving your face a gently shake to emphasize his words. “Nothing is gonna change that.”
“Just promise me…” You stopped to clear your throat and will away the tears. “Promise me you won’t die for her.”
He pulled you closer and placed a gentle kiss to your forehead.
“I promise.”
You smiled softly as he took your mask out of hands. He slid the strap over your head and positioned the lenses over your eyes. He patted your cheek twice before grabbing his own helmet and standing. You climbed to your feet and shook out your arms, feeling the tension fall away.
You two met with Luke and Jessica, heading around the back entrance in the parking garage after she made a joking comment about your suits. Matt warned that you weren’t alone so you tapped your mask and watched the figures take shape. Madame Gao. Murakami. And a man you didn’t know.
At the base of the stairs, you broke off from the group. You crept behind the cars and pallets until you were at the side of your adversaries. There was a brief conversation between everyone and you made a face to yourself. You watched from your vantage point as everyone who had weapons readied them. You turned to glance at Matt, who offered you a knowing smirk and a slight nod.
You flicked the knife from your wrist and hopped over the closest pallet. You swung your feet and knocked into the side of Murakami’s head as the rest of the fight ensued. Your opponent steadied himself and glared at you, to which you couldn’t help but grin widely.
“Who are you?” He asked angrily.
“Месть.” You answered proudly. (Vengeance.)
He charged at you, swinging his weapon with a hard intent, but you dodged his attacks. You knocked his weapon to the side and pinned it against a car with your elbow. You spun toward him and slammed the back of your head against his nose, hearing an echoing crack, before you reached under your other arm to jam your knife between his ribs.
He cried out and shoved you away, which caused your blade to jerk and break through cartilage on its way out. As you turned to face him, the blunt end of his weapon slammed across your cheek. The impact threw you against a pallet and he grabbed you by the back of your neck. You reached up to lock your hands around his wrist before you used the pallet as footing and threw yourself into a flip, yanking him with you. You spun so you two could face each other before you swiped the extended blade again. He narrowly avoided it and slammed his knee up into your ribs so your hold on his wrist broke and an old injury began throbbing again.
You swung a fist that he caught so you tried the other hand. You were caught again and your hands were twisted outward. You winced slightly as he pulled further and you saw over his shoulder that your sound had caught Matt’s attention. You lifted one foot and kicked out hard at his chest to send him over to Matt. Your boyfriend caught him by his arms and threw him over his head and through a nearby sheet of glass. You came crashing through soon after and slammed your knee against Murakami’s temple, forcing him back to the ground while you were grabbed from behind.
As your hands came up around the arm at your neck, you saw the blade was still extended. You smirked and slammed your hand back, feeling the knife sink deeply into their shoulder. You yanked it back and jammed your elbow up against their nose before dropping and sweeping their legs. You turned to Murakami in time to see him coming at you with the sharp end of his weapon. You leaned away and caught his arm, flipping him over your back and into a pile of concrete. You reached back and pulled your staff, flicking out the blade as he got back to his feet.
He ran at you and swung his blade again but it clashed against your own. His movements were quick and precise as he backed you against the hood of a car again. You were bent backwards against the cold metal with his hand forcing your blade closer to your throat. He was quick to climb to the hood of the car, pinning his knee against your chest. You woke the Bite on your free hand and reached up with it to grab his shirt front, yanking him down so his face slammed the windshield as you fired a devastating shock from your weapon.
You slipped out from under him and went to slam the blade down through his spine but he narrowly spun out of the way. His movement led to your blade sinking into the hood instead. You planted your hand against the hood and slid over, landing in a crouch and lifting the blade at your wrist. He was quick to put a hand to the side of your head and slam it against the car, resulting in your ears ringing violently.
He yelled something to one of his partners before cutting a nearby tube, leading to a cloud of white smoke coming out. You threw your arms over your head when the smoke was ignited and it suddenly became fire. You stayed in your crouched position until Luke came to squeeze the pipe shut. You let out a small wince when you felt the harsh burns across the back of your hands and fingers.
“Baby?” Matt said in a panic as he found your crouched form, though when you peaked out from behind your arms, he was flooded with relief. “Hey. You okay?”
He gently moved your arms and helped you to your feet. You muttered some assurance and praise for Melvin’s work on your top as you tucked away the blade at your wrist and reached for the one buried in the hood. You rubbed the blood at the side of your head gingerly as you were stopped by the same detective that was looking for answers, only time she wasn’t trying to stop you.
You all hurried to the ground level of the building and stopped for a moment to figure things out. Matt explained how to get to the structure, but the girl who had been with Danny - you realized you hadn’t learned her name - stopped you all and showed the bag of explosives.
“Glad someone else gets it.” You nodded to yourself and knelt beside her to see the blueprints she was unfolding.
“Exodus.” She stared in amazement.
“Y/N.” You smiled.
“Colleen.”
“They’ll have us on obstruction of justice and domestic terrorism.” Jessica urged. “And your boss can’t get us off for that.” She said to you.
“The Hand is relentless.” You said simply, drawing the pain and heat from your fingers to heal the mild burns. “If we don’t get rid of all of them, they’ll just keep coming back. None of us will know peace again because they won’t stop until we’re dead.”
“There’s no guarantee that exploding this building ends their organization.” Jessica countered.
“We’re here to save lives, not take them.” Luke added.
“I came willing to do both. These people aren’t really alive anyway…” You shrugged and stood, moving to Matt. “You’ve been uncharacteristically quiet, Matthew.”
“The building’s empty.” He nodded and reached for your hand carefully, his fingers gently grazing over the new ghosts of scars. “There’s no one else here, just us and them.”
“You’re okay with this?” Claire turned on Matt. “Just because she is?” She gestured to you.
“Ouch.” You frowned.
“You know what I meant.”
“No, but..” Matt made a face. “She’s right. And the architect knew it. The only way to stop this, to save the city from whatever’s coming, is to bring this building down.”
“Then that settles it.” You said simply and glanced around the group. “Unless there’s any better ideas?”
You were met with silence.
“Then that’s exactly what we’re gonna do.” Matt confirmed.

(The Defenders locked in a building)
Danny: Let's do something fun. Like, um, inverting our initials! I'll go first. Ranny Dand.
Luke: Cuke Lage.
Jessica: Jessica Jon-
Jessica: This game is stupid.
Matt: If it helps, I agree with you.

Its episode 7 and i just realized that claire and matt havent even acknowledged each other this whole show? Neither have claire and foggy even though theyve been stuck in the police department for some time now. Its almost like the writers forgot that not only did claire originate on daredevil, but she and matt had the weirdest, most-rushed, and unnecessary romance in the nmcu

Neighbor Pt. 3
Tumblr media
Matt Murdock x Reader
Summary: Matt hears her come home from a date, and interrupts when he hears it go south.
Words: just above 2k
A/N: So this series is basically different excerpts, so the chapters may not fall right into each other if that makes sense... so here's another night of them being neighbors! Hope you enjoy :)
Genres: light angst, comfort, fluff
Part 2
Matt came home to a quiet and cold apartment. After jiggling his keys in the lock a few times, his musty old door finally opened, and he was met with the cool draft that came in from his even older windows. Pushing the door closed with his back, he sighed deeply and dropped his suitcase on the floor. He hung his head low.
Today was long. Too many papers at the office, too many people to talk to… or maybe, the night before, he spent too much time out as Daredevil and barely got any sleep. Or maybe he had trouble falling asleep. Matt wasn’t sure, but it didn’t matter. He was finally home.
It seemed like everyone else in the building had livelier apartments than he did—he could smell spaghetti from an apartment below him, with jazz music playing in the background. Another apartment had children laughing at a cartoon. Another one was having guests over for dinner. Even Fran, the apartment’s snoop, had brownies in the oven. Of course—it was Friday night, and people like them had plans.
Their apartments were all warm and inviting. But not his. It was cold and empty, and nothing played in the background—only these heightened sounds in his ears and his thoughts. His ever so dreadful thoughts.
But what about hers?
He cocked his head against the door to listen closely to her apartment. What was she doing? Nothing seemed to be going on. No tea was on the kettle. Not even the sound of pages being turned in a book. She wasn’t home.
Matt furrowed his brows at this—he knew she had the morning shift today because they had their usual morning greeting and walked each other out. Part of him was disappointed he couldn’t share his lonesome with her, but the other part felt guilty because, of course, she had plans. While Matt was reclusive and preferred the dark, she was friendly, inviting, and liked to be out. Why would she waste her radiance on being locked up in her apartment?
So, Matt did what he normally did. Instead of being at home alone with his thoughts, he changed into his Daredevil gear and waited on his rooftop for something, anything, to call for him. Eventually, it did, but something was missing tonight.
***
He wasn’t out for long.
He was missing punches, throwing them too soon, otherwise just overall thrown off. Something was off. After stopping a robbery, and nearly taking a bullet to his shoulder, Matt tapped out. He sulked in his gear all the way home and stomped down the steps from his roof, back to his cold and empty apartment.
It was nearly midnight. Some people in the building were awake, and others getting ready for bed. And still, she wasn’t home.
Is she okay?
Matt pushed any thought of worry away. Pushed any thought or feeling of attachment away. After all, she was just his neighbor. His neighbor who sometimes said hello to him, who sometimes dropped a book off in braille for him. Not his emotional support neighbor. Just a neighbor, whom Matt couldn’t keep himself from listening to her calming presence.
So what if he liked her anyway, just a little bit?
She would never get involved with a complicated man like him, who held so many secrets and even more baggage.
Plus, they were neighbors. It could neverwork out.
Matt immediately stripped himself of his Daredevil gear and stepped into a hot, steaming shower, to wash these thoughts of her away. Wash this awful night away. Wash the dried blood on his skin away.
He lay in his bed, silk sheets sprawled over his half-naked body. He had his hands behind his head on his pillow, senseless eyes staring up at the ceiling. The building was winding down, finally. No loud conversations, no ovens beeping. Just people getting into bed and soft snores.
And then, he heard it.
The front door of the building unlocked. Footsteps make their way up the stairs. That familiar and therapeutic scent of warm vanilla filled his senses. Finally, she was home.
But she wasn’t alone.
“I had a good time tonight,” he heard her say on her way up the stairs. Heavy footsteps followed closely behind her. Matt listened to her heartbeat and furrowed his brows—she wasn’t telling the truth.
“Me too,” a smooth, masculine voice said. “Are you sure you don’t want to have some coffee?”
“Oh yeah,” she said nervously, masked by a high-pitched tone. She was being overly nice. Cautious. “We had so much food at that restaurant. I’m stuffed. I’m honestly ready for bed,” she laughed, again, a quiver in her laugh. Matt sat up on his elbows as he listened closely.
“Me too,” the man repeated, in a tone Matt didn’t like. Conniving. Entitled. There was an underlying message.
“Well, here’s my place,” she announced, placing a hand on her door. Matt noticed she often forgot to grab her keys when she was nervous. Matt had made her nervous that one morning, but nothing like this. She was… uncomfortable now. She wanted this man to leave. “You didn’t have to walk me up.”
And there it is.
“I wanted to,” he said, leaning against her door, blocking her from the lock. “I thought maybe you could show me the inside.”
“I, uh,” she stammered, fidgeting for her keys unsuccessfully. “I don’t know, it’s late…”
In an instant, Matt throws on a shirt, gray sweatpants, and his dark glasses and hurriedly walks to his door to meet her and this stranger in the hallway. This stranger who won’t leave her alone, who takes the hint and ignores it, this stranger who’s making his neighbor uncomfortable.
Her heart leaps when she sees Matt suddenly coming outside his door, brown hair disheveled and a smile on his face.
“Matt!” She exclaimed. “I’m sorry, was I loud?”
“Not at all,” Matt smiled through gritted teeth. “Just thought I forgot my mail. That’s all. What are you up to?”
“Um…”
“We’re on a date,” the man states plainly. Matt pretends to be shocked, that he didn’t know someone else was there. He feigns surprise and lifts his eyebrows.
“Oh,” Matt said, “Sorry. I didn’t realize.”
“There’s no mail,” the man said curtly, clearly upset that Matt interrupted whatever it was he had planned. “You can go back into your apartment now.” An icy tone.
Matt took a step forward, eyebrows tightening, jaw clenched. He wants to tell this man that he can break every bone in his body. He wants to tell him that if he ever hears him in this building again, he’ll make him beg for mercy. He listens to the man's body muscles tightening, his heart rate is fast in anger. Whatever his plans with her were, they weren’t pure.
But Matt remembers she’s here, witnessing this, scared. He doesn’t want to be whatever that man is. He wants to show her he cares enough about her to walk out of his apartment at midnight and save her from whatever is happening.
So, instead of answering the man with a threat, he looks in her direction—concern etched in his expression, care in his voice.
“Is everything all right?” Matt asks her.
She shakes her head, mistakenly. She quivers a weak “no.”
The man stood menacingly over her. If she didn’t open her door for him, he’d manipulate her into doing it eventually. And Matt was interrupting his plan, he knew it. The man didn’t like that. Well, Matt wasn’t going anywhere until he left her alone.
He walks up to Matt, close enough so they’re standing face to face. Matt can smell the rum on his breath, which reeked with bad intentions. His hands turned to fists as the man began to speak whatever bullshit threat he tried to come up with. But Matt cuts him off.
“If you don’t leave this apartment in the next thirty seconds, I will have Detective Brett Mahoney and the entire 15th Precinct outside for your arrest for harassment and intimidation. Or worse—I’ll have the apartment snoop named Fran come out and scare you herself. Have I made myself clear?” Matt spoke through gritted teeth, keeping his voice calm and even.
The man was looking at Matt like he really had the nerve—and he did. She stood there, watching this all unfold, wanting nothing more than to lock herself in her apartment and shut her phone off for a week.
He stared Matt down, trying to find any glare behind his dark red glasses. All he saw was his angry expression in the reflection. How can he be intimidating to a blind man? Matt is blind to an extent, but he’s not blind to people with malicious intentions.
All he does is scoff at Matt. He turns on his heel and looks at her as she cowers into the corner of her door. Matt takes a step forward immediately to stand between him and her. He scoffs again.
“Didn’t know you were fucking your neighbor,” he spat before bounding down the stairs, slamming the door behind him.
Matt stood for a moment, listening to the man curse to himself outside, kick a random can on the ground, and walk himself down the street before entering a taxi and returning himself to whatever hell he came from. It wasn’t until Matt was sure he was gone from the vicinity that he heard a loud stomping again, booming in his ears, that he realized it was her scared, frantic heartbeat coming from behind him.
Matt turned around to face her, taking a step back to give her some space. “Hey,” he cooed. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” she lied, placing a hand over her heart in an attempt to calm herself down. “Well, now I am. Goodness… he wouldn’t take a hint.”
Matt sighed. “I think he was ignoring them on purpose. Who was he, anyway?”
“Some guy I went on a first—and last—date with,” she answered sheepishly. “I didn’t even want to go. My friends encouraged me to get myself out there. Clearly, it was a mistake.”
“I’m sorry he treated you like that. You don’t deserve that,” Matt replied in a soft tone, your usual calm heart beating frantically still. “You should never do anything you’re uncomfortable with. Even if it’s as simple as a first date.”
“I know,” she said, defeated like she’d told herself this before. “I don’t know what would’ve happened if you hadn’t come out. Thank you, Matt.”
“No need to thank me,” Matt said, shaking his head. “That’s what neighbors are for.”
She smiled softly. “You’ll save me from my next bad date?”
Matt laughed, glad that she seemed to calm down and was back to her friendly, unafraid self. “It’s late,” he said softly, deflecting from her joke. He didn’t want her to go on another bad date—she didn’t deserve that. But he also didn’t want her to go on a date with someone other than him. Which was why he was about to wish her goodnight.
“It is,” she yawned. “Well, maybe I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight,” Matt whispered. “Don’t forget to lock your door.”
She giggled, already letting herself inside. “I won’t.”
“Hey,” she said suddenly, half inside her apartment, half out. From this alone, Matt was looped in her scent. “You don't think he will come back, do you? Now he knows where I live.”
“He won’t,” Matt shook his head, “and if he does, I will deal with it. Don’t worry. Get some sleep, okay?”
“Okay. Thank you again, Matt.”
She closed her door softly, and Matt waited until he heard the lock click before he went back inside his apartment.
Laying in his bed, he listened as she crawled into her bed in her apartment. Her heartbeat told him she was still awake. When he heard it slowed down, signaling she had fallen asleep, he closed his eyes and drifted into a slumber himself.

MAD AT GOD - MATT MURDOCK

season 2b - maybe my soulmate died

Pairing: Matt Murdock x Reader
Word Count: 4,825
Summary: It all come crashing down in the final face off against Elektra and the Hand. Seven go in, Six come out. But part of her gets buried too, so maybe five and a half.
“I don’t want any part of this.” Luke shook his head and paced the small waiting area. “I don’t care how dangerous you say these people are.”
“Great.” You groaned. “Another moral ground.”
“Moral high- Because I don’t want to blow up a building!”
“An empty building! And they’re hardly even people anymore!”
“Isn’t that your friend with the swords?”
You scoffed. “My friend died in front of me months ago. That’s only the Black Sky and she won’t hesitate again when it comes to killing us!”
“So that makes this okay?”
“That makes it my problem! You don’t have to even touch the explosives but you’re not stopping this.”
“You don’t get it, Luke.” Colleen tried.
“Oh, I get it.” He nodded but you rolled your eyes. “The Hand was taking kids out of Harlem and using them for clean up.”
“And weren’t they killing those kids too?” You pressed. “You really wanna let them get away with that?”
“You’re just looking for a reason, aren’t you?” Jessica commented.
“I’m just the only one willing to do what it takes, apparently. Everyone else needs a ‘good enough’ reason.”
“Your bloody hand says otherwise.”
“Hey.. That’s enough.” Matt said gently and moved you to stand on his other side by Claire. You wiped the bloody hand against your pant leg. “We’re here for Danny, but the girls are right. It won’t end there. The Hand will keep coming after us. This is our chance to shut them down for good.”
“Gao already has it in for us.” You gestured between you and Matt. “I’ve made a new enemy out of Murakami but he’s not leaving this building unless it’s in a bag so I’m not worried about that, and don’t any of you try to stop that. The other guy-“
“Bakuto.” Colleen explained. “My first master.”
You turned to her and watched as her face fell, an almost shameful feeling filling her.
“Sounds like that’s your chapter to close, then.” You offered and she gave you a small, determined nod.
“I get that you three have history with them.” Luke tried and you groaned.
“So does she.” Matt gestured to Jessica. “So does she.” He gestured to Claire. “So do you and that kid from Harlem.”
“Detonating a bomb here won’t fix what happened to him!”
“But it’ll keep it from happening to anyone else! It can keep anyone else from being put in danger.”
“I just…” He sighed. “I can’t go along with this.”
“Then don’t.” You shrugged. “But if you stay here, don’t get in the way.”
“For the record, everything that’s been said in the past two minutes is absolutely insane.” Claire said calmly and you gave a small nod in agreement. Ninjas, resurrections, and imploding buildings isn’t a normal day in New York for everyone.
“Thank you!” Luke nodded.
“But… We all know what the Hand is capable of.” She continued. “We’ve all been affected and they just keep coming back. When they do, it’s not just crime. It’s horror movie murder-y shit.”
“If we don’t do this, it’s gonna get worse.” Matt continued.
“It’s one empty building and some empty bodies versus an entire city full of innocent people. What is still the debate here?” You asked in annoyance.
“This is not how I fix things.” Luke shook his head.
“Можем ли мы уже сделать это?” You grumbled and leaned against the nearest wall, bouncing your head off the structure behind until Matt came to your side and put his hand between your head and the wall. (Can we just get this done already?)
“These people came after our friends. They’re showing no signs of stopping” Jessica added.
“Jess!”
“You know I’ve wanted nothing to do with this from the beginning. The architect’s brains are still in my apartment. I haven’t changed my clothes. Let’s just get this shit over with.”
Still, Luke gave her an apprehensive expression. You grew tired of the back and forth so you took it into your own hands. You twisted your wrist at your side and unwound his conviction against the plan. Mixing that with what Jessica said next, Luke finally agreed so long as no one innocent got hurt.
You looked through the bag as Matt and Colleen talked about where to plant them.
“Interesting..” You spoke quietly with furrowed brows. You knew instantly that it wouldn’t bode well for your ragtag group.
“Y/N?” Matt asked.
“There’s no remote detonator. Meaning once you start it, there’s only a few minutes to get clear, depending on the timer.”
“You sure?” Claire asked as she reached for the timer.
“Yeah, I’ve been around my fair share of explosives.”
“So what you’re saying is, once someone activates the charge…” Colleen trailed off as her mind worked.
“No going back.” You nodded.
“You two put them in place.” Matt pointed to Colleen and Claire. “Once we’re out, hit the charge, we get out of here.”
“No, I’m going down with you.” Colleen insisted and you groaned. “Last time I stayed behind, Danny got drugged and kidnapped.”
“To be fair, you wouldn’t have been able to stop them either.” You shrugged and Matt elbowed you slightly.
“Colleen, the four of them have certain abilities.” Claire tried. “And as your friend, if I’m going to do this, I’m gonna need your help a lot more than they do.”
“Promise me you won’t fail him again.” She turned to Matt.
“Всегда так драматично.” You mumbled to yourself as Luke answered her and the sirens approached outside. (Always so dramatic.)
You were patting the pouches of your belt for the communications case but Matt pulled you away before you could find it. You tapped your implant and tuned in to the cops’ radios, relaying the various information you heard. Calling for the bomb squad. Evacuation orders. Call for all available units.
“Something mechanical behind it.” Matt explained and backed away from the wall.
“What do you mean?” Jessica asked.
Luke broke open the wall and exposed the elevator, along with the hole going down hundreds of feet.
“The more I think about it, the less I like our odds.” Luke commented as he peered down the hole.
“Do like me. Don’t think about it.” Matt offered and you chuckled beside him.
“Matt, you don’t think about a lot of things.” You joked and he grinned.
“If you told me a week ago that I’d be here with you three, about to blow up a building and fight ninjas to save New York…” Jessica thought out loud.
“For whatever it’s worth, I’m glad you’re here.” Matt offered.
“What?” She countered and her expression made you laugh.
“Well the circumstances could be better. I’m just saying, y’know, I’m glad we found each other.”
“I’m not hugging you.” Luke said and Matt chuckled slightly.
You wrapped your arm around Matt and he tucked you closer into his side.
“You guys get on my nerves but I do appreciate you guys sticking this thing out and being here.” You said honestly. “Thank you.”
“Yeah, well..” Jessica shrugged, though you could feel the subtle softness in the gesture. “You guys ready?”
“No.” Luke shook his head.
“No.” Matt sighed.
“Might as well.” You shrugged.
You and Jessica moved to the elevator first, Luke and Matt close behind. It was a tense, relatively quiet ride down. You rested your forehead against Matt’s shoulder and toyed with his fingers. He turned his head and put a reassuring kiss to the top of your head.
“You alright, Sweetheart?” He asked softly.
“Yeah, I’ll just tune it all out when we get a little closer.” You shrugged and he made a small upset sound. “What?”
“You know I worry about you.”
“How do you think I feel? Your first love is back.”
“Y/N..” His other hand went under your chin and lifted your eyes.
“No, I know.” You nodded. “I’m just… I don’t know. I have a feeling that not all four of us are coming back up this elevator and.. I can’t lose you, Matty. I just can’t.”
“You trust me?”
“With my life.” You didn’t hesitate to answer and he smiled proudly. “You know that.”
“Then believe me when I tell you it’s all gonna be alright. Okay? Nothing’s gonna happen.”
“Yeah, okay.”
“I love you.” He said softly.
“I love you, too.”
“Hey.” Luke said when his quiet conversation with Jessica died out. “Anyone waiting for us?”
“Yeah, about thirty of them.” Matt answered. You tapped your mask and looked down, seeing small dots pop up across your lenses. “All of ‘em armed, including two of the ones we fought in the garage.”
“Looks like Gao and… Murakami.” You added. “He’s mine. I don’t care who goes after her.”
“What about the ex-girlfriend?” Jessica gave Matt a pointed look.
“Yeah.” He nodded but gripped your hand.
“This is gonna be a lot worse than what we’ve gone against so far.” You explained, hoping to redirect the conversation away from Elektra.
“So how do we handle it?” Jessica asked.
“I got an idea.” Luke tried. “But you’re not gonna like it.”
“Whatever you guys do, I’m handling it my way.” You said honestly, shaking the Bite on your free hand. “Whether you agree with it or not, I’m not pulling punches. I will leave a pile of bodies if I have to.”
“Dial it down, Tiff.” Jessica rolled her eyes. “Just put the homicidal tendencies on the back burner for a second.”
You made a face to mock her but listened as Luke explained his plan. He wanted Jessica to be the bait, to draw their attention and let him and Matt gain the element of surprise. But you countered that you would be of more interest. After a brief argument, they agreed.
So when the elevator hit the bottom, you stood in it alone. Against the Hand. Against whatever claimed the body of Elektra Natchios.
You pushed open the elevator gates and folded your hands neatly behind your back, allowing your fingers to toy with the handle of your knife.
“Hello, Elektra. Nice to see you again.” You smiled slightly. “This is a bit more than I expected but you always got everything you wanted. Didn’t you?”
She didn’t answer but gave you a small smirk.
“If only you could’ve had your precious Matthew…”
You felt a spark of rage in her chest.
“Unfortunately, him and I had a bit of a.. disagreement about what to do in regards to-“ You gestured vaguely to the hole. “-all of this. So I had to get him out of my way… A shame I had to kill him. He was pretty cute and incredible in bed.. I could see why you loved him. But don’t worry.. He died quickly..”
She took a step closer so you spoke quickly.
“I didn’t come to fight you, Elektra. And I didn’t come to try and kill you either. Though I am willing, if it comes down to it…”
Your eyes scanned the group until you found Murakami. Your fingers closed around the handle of your blade and you yanked it out discreetly.
“But I will admit, I did come down here with very specific purpose.”
She lifted her chin and gave you a slight raise of her brow. You grinned wickedly before flinging your knife through the air and it landed with a wet thump into the center of the man’s throat. As soon as you had pulled your arm back, the rest of your group came into the fight. You all moved through the crowd, throwing them aside or knocking them down until you were able to meet with Danny.
After a very brief recap from both sides, you faced the remaining members of the Hand. The fighting ensued quickly and you kept your word to not pull your punches.
A woman had you pinned against the wall and aimed a viscous punch for your head. Instead, you flicked the knife at your wrist and jammed it into her throat. The bullets came from around the corner quickly so you dropped to your knee.
You pulled your gun and leaned around the rock pillar you were behind, firing a quick shot into either gunman’s forehead. You were moving to stand when Elektra’s foot collided with your chest. You were thrown backwards, tumbling until you hit your knees and you finished in a slide. You growled slightly and woke both Bites before you charged at her.
You two exchanged blow after blow, some blocked and some connecting, but neither of you let up. You made attempts with the knife at your wrist, but she smacked most of the shots away. Only a few knicked her, across the arm or one that clipped her chin. It wasn’t until the sudden beeping in your implant caught your attention was she able to land anything worthwhile against you.
The kick floored you but gave Luke a chance to jump in. You used your mask to find the source and you were shown a timer ticking down.
“Oh shit.” You mumbled before glancing around the tunnels. You found your dropped gun at your side so you tucked it back in its place. “Matt!”
“Y/N?” He called in return, pushing past everything to get to your side.
“You hear that?”
“Yeah.. Everyone needs to go. Now.”
He helped you to your feet and you turned to see Elektra stuck in a match with Luke. You moved over quickly, using Luke as footing to jump from after he knocked her into a short spin so she faced away from you. You moved in a fluid motion to connect the wires between your wrists as you hooked one leg over her shoulders and jammed the other against her spine. You leaned forward enough to get the wire across her throat before you dropped to land on your feet. You yanked her back and twisted so she landed on her face. You knelt on her back and jammed both Bites against her skin. She cried out and fell limp so you yanked your wire apart and hurried back to the group.
“You guys need to get to the surface.” Matt said quickly.
“You guys?” You clarified and stopped in front of him, standing firm despite him pushing you toward the elevator.
“What about you?” Danny asked.
“Someone has to make sure-“
“But why does it have to be you?” You cut in quickly and you felt your eyes begin to water as you realized what he meant. “Matt, you promised.”
“I know.” He said gently, his hands coming to their well-known position on either side of your face. “I know but-“
“No. We said no one innocent was gonna die. If anyone should stay, it should be me.”
“No, Y/N.”
“It’s my fault this happened to her anyway. It’s only fitting it’d be me.”
“I’m not letting you die because of this.”
“Neither am I… Please forgive me.”
“What?”
You put your hands behind his shoulders and pulled him down so you could slam your knee up into his stomach. Matt grabbed one of your arms and kicked your knee out from under you so you spun to get behind him. You hooked your arm under his leg with fingers hooked around the holster for his clubs and yanked him to his back. You kept you two tumbling until you could lock him into an arm bar. You charged one of your Bites to a bright blue and went to slam it against him.
But as your arm was coming down, he rolled into you and forced your ankles apart. His arm twisted in your hold so his hand could grip your throat before he yanked you to your feet and shoved you towards the group, staying in place to ensure you made it to the elevator. You felt a pair of hands on your arms but you called a wave of hot anger to roll across your skin and the hands instantly disappeared just as Matt turned away from you.
You ran at Matt again and moved into your usual flip. Matt side-stepped you and placed hands around your waist to guide you through it. As you were coming up, you hooked an arm around his throat with the intent of throwing him into someone’s arms at the elevator. You felt his hands on your upper arm as he took control of his momentum. Once his feet hit the ground, he shifted to be in front of you. He fell back and placed a foot against your stomach. As you two went down, he pushed with his leg and sent you into a flip over him.
Your back hit the rock surface hard and you coughed as the air escaped your lungs and your ribs screamed at you.
“Take her with you guys… Now.” Matt said and you felt someone’s hands under your arms to haul you away.
“No.” You argued and shifted aggressively in their grip. “No, let me go!”
You lifted your wrist and shot your wire at Matt’s ankles. It wrapped around and you yanked to pull him to the floor. You reached back and fired your other Bite against Jessica and she dropped her hold with a loud and annoyed exclamation. You hurried back to Matt, ditching the wire as you got closer, and as you were reaching him, he spun to his back and slammed both feet into your chest which threw you to the floor.
“Goddammit Matt!” You cried as you climbed to your feet and yanked your mask to sit around your throat. Looking over, he threw his helmet to the side and scowled in your direction. “We don’t have time for this!”
“You’re right. We don’t.” He agreed. “You need to go, Y/N.”
“I’m not leaving you, not again.”
He sighed loudly and came to stand in front of you. One hand landed on your waist while the other went behind your neck. You hissed at the familiar pain in your ribs as your chests collided but the sound was muffled by his lips hitting yours. You felt everything with that kiss. Every ounce of love, devotion, regret. Almost enough to buckle your knees.
You felt his fingers feeling around your belt but before you could voice the question, he pressed the small disc against your neck and forced it with his thumb. You yelled loudly and staggered back as the electricity flooded through your body, right into Jessica’s expectant arms.
“We need to go!” Jessica urged as she practically threw you onto the elevator.
“No!” You cried out, the single syllable tearing through your throat. She slammed the gates shut just before you reached them. You moved to jump over it, knowing the short landing would be fine since the elevators had hardly started the climb, but Luke grabbed you and held you in place. “I can’t leave him! I can’t- Matt! Matt, don’t do this!”
You thrashed and kicked, flicking out your blade and slamming it down. Firing both Bites and letting your skin freeze with your sadness, cold enough that you could see the beads of sweat hanging to the end of your hair turn to little icicles. But nothing was enough. Luke wouldn’t let go.
“Let me go!” You cried out loudly and twisted aggressively in his grip.
“Я люблю тебя, Y/N. Безоговорочно. Hold on to that.” You heard his voice through your implant. “I’m so sorry.” (I love you. Unconditionally.)
“No!”
You had never felt that type of sadness before, that type of loneliness. It crashed into you like a train, overtook you like a wave against the shore. As the elevator began to climb, you felt everything else in your body sink. Every inch of your body felt cold, your vision coated with a cruel and unforgiving blue as your heart grew heavy in your chest.
Matt was going to die in that hole. You were going to be alone.
As the remaining Hand members began climbing the elevator shaft, you fixed your mask and pulled a blade to take brutal shots in an attempt to replace the cold with something - anything - else. You sliced their throats, carved their chests, buried your knife so deep it came out the other side and you were wrist deep in their bodies. You pierced skulls and plucked eyeballs from their sockets. You didn’t care about the blood you spilled, the lives you took.
The Hand took another person you loved. And you wouldn’t be able to get this one back.
Eventually, after having to climb the rest of the way, your group made it to the ground floor. You were met with a squad of officers with guns pointed at you all. You swiped your arm and watched their eyes cloud with yellow before running out of the building in a panic. You felt Jessica’s hand on your arm the whole way, ensuring to drag you all the way to the ambulance.
You shifted anxiously between your feet, refusing to believe what you had just seen. Matt must’ve found another way out. He had to have known another way. There was no way he would just die.
“Maybe we should check the perimeter.” You said quickly, denial coursing through you.
“Y/N..” Colleen tried softly, like you were an injured wild animal that could snap at any time.
“There had to be another way out. He wouldn’t- I know he- He can’t-“
You turned as the explosions began going off. You watched the bursts of heat and destruction as the building began to collapse on itself. As the building fell, you went down to your knees, as if there was a string from your chest to the base of the building and it dragged you down as it went and the realization settled heavily on your shoulders. You clutched your empty, bloodied hands to your chest as the tears fogged your mask. You screamed in agony, feeling as if your own heart was being ripped from your chest by a pair of ice cold hands and you couldn’t stop it. You folded over on yourself, having no strength to keep yourself up as you heard the shattering of windows and the crunch of breaking concrete.
Я люблю тебя., Y/N. Безоговорочно. Hold on to that. I’m so sorry.
“He had no intention of making it out alive.” Danny said, almost angrily.
You pushed yourself to your feet and shoved your mask out of the way enough to wipe your eyes as you faced him as that blistering cold pain shifted to answering anger at the faux display of sentiment. He offered you a sympathetic look but you reached back and slammed a freezing fist across his face that made him stumble backwards into Colleen’s arms.
“I should’ve let Stick kill you.” You sneered, rage burning through you. “At least then, he’d probably still be alive.”
You wanted to scream his name, but even in death, you would keep his secret.
“He gave his life for all of us, not just me.” Danny tried.
“If you died, then you wouldn’t have opened that wall, which means that we don’t end up in that hole. Meaning Daredevil doesn’t trade his life for yours!”
“Don’t blame me because you couldn’t beat him.”
“At least I tried! At least I wasn’t a coward! I was willing to die down there, but were any of you?” You looked around the group and found them all averting your eyes. “All of you chose to run! Why? Because it wasn’t your fight? None of you tried to stop him.” You said shakily, the blue of your vision mixing with red. Your insides felt cold but your skin burned, sweating under the material of your suit. “None of you cared! You’re all selfish! It should’ve been any of us. Any of us, but him!”
“Hey..” Claire said softly, coming to your side and wrapping her arms around you despite you trying to jerk away.
“No.” You mumbled and pushed her hands away. “No. Don’t- No, don’t touch me. Don’t touch me.”
She kept trying until you finally gave in and let her catch you in her arms, pinning yours to your side.
“He’s gone.” You cried quietly into her shoulder. “He’s gone. He’s- He’s- He’s-“ You hiccuped between words as your brain couldn’t manage to say that sentence again.
Matt Murdock was dead.
“I know.. I know.” She said softly.
You were all taken back to the precinct but you felt absolutely gutted. You were hollow, empty without the warmth that was Matt Murdock.
You thought you had been mad before. When you had been desperate, scared and alone, and turned to God for help but He ignored you. When you were lost, hollow and broken but He abandoned you yet again. But now, you weren’t just mad at God. You hated Him. You wanted to tear his precious Kingdom apart and burn his pearly gates to the ground. You wanted to yank Him down to Earth so He could suffer with everyone He allowed to suffer.
As you were all taken to the police station to reconvene with your friends, your mind was a muddled mess of sorrow. Matt Murdock was your light, the only real bright spot in your otherwise gloomy life. Now you had only a flicker, only his memory. But you knew it wouldn’t be enough. You’d succumb to the darkness you were accustomed to and there’d be no one to pull you out. No one to talk you off the ledge you teetered and now you were in free fall.
Everyone else entered the room first, leaving you in the hall for a second to gather yourself. But you couldn’t bring yourself to cross the threshold. Instead, you fell to the floor again and slumped against the wall. You were alone for only a minute before Claire came and knelt in front of you.
“How am I supposed to face them?” You mumbled weakly and hugged your knees to your chest.
“All I can tell you, Y/N, is that you have two friends in there who think they’ve lost you both.” She said softly.
“How do I tell them that- that- that he’s dead? That I couldn’t save him?”
“Right now, they just need to know that someone they care about made it.”
“They’ll blame me… They’d be right, too. That’s what makes it worse.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Well I blame me.” You sighed. “He’s dead because I wasn’t strong enough to stop him. I wasn’t- I wasn’t fast enough. I wasn’t good enough to beat him. First Elektra, now Matt. I’m just- I’m a curse. I’m a curse. Everyone who I care about dies because I- Because this stupid heart of mine gets in the way. People I love die because I’m weak!“
“Listen to me.” She said with a gentle firmness. “I don’t know a lot about all of this and I don’t even want to. But I do know two things. You are not weak. You’ve gone through hell, Y/N, but you still fight for what’s right. That is strength. Okay? Second, I know whatever decision he made, no one was going to talk him down. Not even you. And you know how he loved you. He made that choice to save you.”
“That doesn’t make it any better! Am I supposed to be grateful to have survived this? I should appreciate that he traded his life for mine, right? My life isn’t worth shit compared to his! C’mon, my own parents didn’t even want me.”
“He was a grown man. His decisions and mistakes were his to make. You don’t have to forgive him for this or yourself, if you really feel like that.” She pressed, pulling you to your feet despite your limp posture. “But you don’t get to leave your friends to worry about your well-being when you’re alive. Fall apart after they know you’re alive.”
“Okay..” You nodded with a sniffle. “Okay, you’re right.”
She gave your arm a small pat before heading back into the room your friends were waiting for you in. You felt their grief, their pain was slamming into you with a force that refused to be ignored. Refused to be shut out. They were terrified, waiting to see who would cross the threshold next. They knew, both of them deep down, that there would only be one of you coming back. With every passing second you lingered, you felt their hope diminishing. They were starting to believe that neither of you had made it. An expected way for you to go, you thought. Your vigilante personas dying together. But no. You were still alive.
You willed your feet to move and stepped inside, trying to be presentable to your friends. Karen ran to you when she saw you, likely recognizing the bloodshot in your eyes and the tear streaks down your blood splattered face. You yanked your mask down just before she embraced you. Looking over her shoulder, you saw the understanding cross Foggy’s face. He stood frozen, only for a second as the loss of his friend hit him, before crashing into you as well.
“I’m sorry… I couldn’t-“ You cried quietly and everything inside of you broke as you confessed. Only the embrace of your friends kept you from falling to your knees. “I’m so sorry… I couldn’t save him.”
