Black Flame Candle-Max Dennison-Chapter 1

Summary: Max Dennison is the new kid in Salem, Massachusetts. On Halloween, his life takes a dramatic turn when his parents force him to take his little sister, Dani, trick-or-treating. He, his crush, Casey Blackstone, and his sister are in for a ride when Max lights the Black Flame Candle.

Third Person POV

‘It’s all just a bunch of Hocus Pocus.’

Salem, Massachusetts has always been known for its witchcraft allegations as well as for how they handled each case, calling them the Salem Witch Trials. Three centuries ago, hundreds of people were accused, but only a mere thirty were found guilty. Nineteen were hanged due to the false accusations placed upon them, while others died in jail or were pressed to death.

Thackery Binx found his sister being whisked away by three actual witches, The Sanderson sisters, who needed her for a spell to stay young and beautiful. The same night his sister had passed away, and his disappearance, the three witches were hanged for their witchcraft, but vowed they’d be back.

Now every Halloween, the entire town goes all out for the festivities. Casey Blackstone has lived in Salem all her life and loves the holiday. It’s the one time of year she can eat as much candy as she wants and no one will bat an eye, well except for her dentist father. She also loves wearing costumes, being someone else besides herself for a night.

Since her family, as well as her friend Allison’s, thinks they are too old to be trick or treating, they are forced to give out candy this year while Allison’s family has a party. Her parents wanted to go to the party at Town Hall but they got sick so they’re staying home. Her costume is already at the Watt’s house, waiting to be put on later that night.

Sighing to herself as she fixes her hair in the mirror, Casey turns to her black cat that is sitting on her bed watching her.

Due to the holiday and the history they are taught every year, she felt there was only one name fitting for a black cat such as the one she found almost eleven years ago.

“What do you think of today’s outfit, Binx?” She throws her hands out, showing off her purple low-cut shirt as well as her slightly ripped jeans.

Binx meows his response before stepping toward her to rub his face against her hip, causing his collar to clink against the bell she forces him to wear.

“I like it too.” She smiles and pets his head as she kneels down next to her bed. “Alright, I got to go to school. Remember, don’t bring mice into the house. If you’re going to bring female cats home, make sure it’s not in my room. I’ll see you tomorrow. You’re my best friend and I love you.”

She kisses the top of his head before picking up her bookbag and walking out of the room, not noticing him climbing out of her window as soon as she closes her door a smidge. She wasn’t lying. Her cat was her best friend and she makes sure to tell him everyday, despite him probably not knowing what the hell she’s saying.

She had found him in her backyard one day, eating a mouse with no collar. It was clear that he belonged to no one, that he was on his own. She knew she had to take him in, after asking her parents of course. Ever since, she’s been feeding him, playing with him and letting him sleep on her bed, cuddled up next to her.

She even lets him roam free, knowing he’ll come right back home. He’s literally her best friend and she wouldn’t trade him for the world, even if he leaves her surprises on the back porch. After slipping on her shoes and red jacket, she walks out the front door, ready to take on the day.

Max Dennison has only been in town for about a week and a half and he already hates it. He misses the sunny days of California. He misses his friends. Hell, he misses his old house. To him, Salem, Massachusetts is a horrible place to live. It’s gloomy, rainy and far too obsessed with this witchy, Halloween stuff.

It was never his favorite holiday to begin with so moving to a town that is all for it irritates him. He can’t wait to move once he turns eighteen next year. The only thing good about this town is this one girl. On Max’s first day of school earlier this week, he caught sight of a beautiful girl. Blonde hair. These crystal blue eyes that remind him of the ocean back home.

He’s never even spoken a word to her and he’s already hooked. He rubs his eyes as he walks to his final class of the day. History. The third class he has with the girl he has his eyes on. Seeing her will make this boring class worth it. He sits down in his assigned seat and pulls out his notebook, unsure of what they will be learning today.

As he opens his notebook, he glances up at a soft giggle that enters his ears. There she is. The purple shirt she’s wearing really brings out her eyes, and he’s really trying hard not to look down a smidge. As she walks by him, he quickly looks down at his notebook, not wanting to be caught watching her.

Since she sits in the row next to him, but one seat behind, he can easily get caught by the teacher, or hell, another student! Maybe today, he’ll finally talk to her…yeah, probably not going to happen. As class starts, their teacher, Miss Olin who is dressed as a witch, begins telling the legend of the Sanderson Sisters.

The very legend that Casey got her cat's name from. Even though she knows every bit of the legend, she’s listening closely, hoping to hear something different but she never does. Max, however, is doodling in his notebook, not believing one ounce of the story.

“Poor Thackery Binx. Neither his father, his mother, nor anyone else ever knew what became of him…those 300 years ago.” Miss Olin says, walking up an aisle before stopping in front of the classroom. “And so the Sanderson Sisters were hanged by the Salem townsfolk. Now, there are those who say that on Halloween night…a black cat still guards the old Sanderson house, warning off any who might make the witches…come back to life!”

She then throws a black ribbon attached to her hand at a girl’s face causing the teenage girl to scream in fright. The rest of the students in the room, besides Max, laugh at her scream. Max shakes his head in disbelief as he doodles.

“Give me a break.” He mumbles, moving his pen along the letters he drew.

“Aha, we seem to have a skeptic in our midst.” Miss Olin raises an eyebrow as she steps toward his desk. “Mr. Dennison, would you care to share your California, laid-back, tie-dyed point of view?”

The room erupted into laughter again at her sarcasm. He looks up at her after glancing around the room and smirks, gaining some courage.

“Okay. Granted that, uh, you guys here in Salem are all into these, uh, black cats and witches and stuff…”

Miss Olin cuts him off with a scoff while the rest of the room let him know that his words were unneeded by their tones of displeasure.

“Stuff?”

“Fine. But everyone here knows that Halloween was invented by the candy companies. It’s a conspiracy.” He finishes, smirking at his teacher.

A voice speaks up, capturing Max’s attention. He turns toward the voice and his cheeks redden a bit at who is talking. It’s her…

“It just so happens that Halloween is based on the ancient feast called All Hallows Eve. It’s the one night of the year where the spirits of the dead can return to earth.” She explains, giving the teenager her own smirk.

The class breaks out into cheers and claps at her comment, happy to prove the new kid wrong with his non-beliefs and crappy theories. He turns back to his notebook and flips to a new paper, quickly jotting something down, a small smile on his face as he keeps his courage.

“Well said, Casey.” Miss Olin says, smiling widely at her, clapping herself.

She grins to herself and high fives Allison who is sitting right behind the non-believer. Max stands up from his chair as his classmates talk around him. He takes a few steps toward her desk, capturing her attention.

“Well, in case Jimi Hendrix shows up tonight, here’s my number.” He says, holding out the piece of paper.

She raises an eyebrow, ignoring her classmates groans, and takes the single sheet before opening it up. ‘Max Dennison 555-9142’ it reads. The bell rings and Casey stands up from her chair, giving the boy a small smirk as she puts the number in her pocket. He smiles at her actions before watching her walk away.

“Max.” A boy that sat behind her captures his attention. “Fat chance.”

The new kid just rolls his eyes and gathers his stuff up, ready to go home. Casey quickly stops at her locker, making sure to grab her jacket while sticking all her books in the metal container. Since Halloween is such a big holiday in Salem, the school doesn’t give out homework if it lands on a weekend such as today.

As she puts her notebook away, she notices a pen sitting on the top shelf. Smirking to herself, she pulls out Max’s number and rips the paper, jotting something down on one half. Shoving one piece into her jeans pocket and the other, along with the pen, into her jacket pocket, she hangs her bookbag on the hook and closes the door.

Casey then jogs out to the front doors, meeting up with Allison as she glances around the parking lot.

“So did he really give you his number?” Allison asks, fixing her bag that rests on her shoulder as they walk down the sidewalk.

“He did.” She nods, smiling softly to herself as she plays with the paper in her jacket pocket.

“And are you going to call him?” Her friend raises an eyebrow.

“If I do, it won't be till…”

“Casey!”

The blonde turns around and sees the new kid on his bike, riding toward her. She looks at her best friend and gestures down the road.

“I’ll catch up.”

Allison raises an eyebrow at the brunette haired boy before nodding at her friend. Casey turns back around and watches as Max stops his bike beside her, panting very softly as he straddles his seat.

“Hi.” She says, smiling slightly at him.

“Hi. Look, uhh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to embarrass you in class.” He says, regretting his actions.

He thought about it on his way to his bike. He shouldn’t have done that. What if she hates him now? What if she never wants to see him again? He practically humiliated her in front of their entire class.

“You didn’t.” She shrugs, not caring one bit about the awkward exchange that happened.

If anything, she’s the one that embarrassed him in front of the entire class by proving him wrong. He pauses for a moment, unsure of what to say so he lets go of his handlebars and holds his hand out to her.

“My name is Max Dennison.” He says, despite having practically told her through his note.

“Yeah, I know.” She says, shaking his hand. “You just moved here, huh?”

“Yeah, last week.” He says, not wanting to think about how soft her hands were compared to his.

“Must be a big change for you.” She says, letting go of his hand to put her own back into her jacket pocket.

“Yeah, that’s for sure.” He says, scoffing slightly, gripping his handlebars again.

“You don’t like it here?” She raises an eyebrow.

“Oh, the leaves are great…” He says, gesturing around them. “But - I - I don’t know. Just all this Halloween shit.”

“You don’t believe in it?” She asks, pushing her hip out slightly as she rests most of her body weight on one leg, not caring about his language.

“What? Do you mean, like The Sanderson Sisters?” He shakes his head with a light chuckle escaping his lips. “No way.”

“Not even on Halloween?” She asks, biting her lip softly, trying to hide her amusement.

“Especially not on Halloween.” He says, putting emphasis on the beginning of his sentence with a smile.

Casey licks the inside of her cheek before reaching into her pocket. Holding up two fingers with a piece of paper sitting between them, she gently pulls Max’s left hand off his handlebars. He opens his hand, watching her movements, praying that his cheeks aren’t turning red at her actions. She presses the piece of paper into his hand, smiling as she looks up at him as she closes his hand around it.

“Trick or treat.”

Letting his hand go, she turns around and starts walking toward where Allison is waiting, talking to another friend of theirs. Max’s eyes watch her before looking down at the folded paper. His heart is pounding in his chest as he moves to open the paper.

“Max!” He hears her call out for him, causing his head to snap up. “Call me Cas.”

Not knowing what to say, he nods at her words, watching her walk away again. This time, she turns around and puts up her red hood, making it look like she was wearing a witch’s pointed hat. He bites his lip and looks back down at the piece of paper. Swallowing the small amount of spit in his mouth, he unfolds the paper.

The first thing that caught his eye was that the top half was ripped off, meaning…she kept his number! He smiles softly before looking at the words written. ‘Casey Blackstone. 555-????. No tricks, Max. Earn your treat.’ with a smiley face. The smile drops from his face for a moment before it shows up again.

She didn’t give him her full number, but by the way she wrote this note, she might plan on giving it to him later! Hell, if she did keep his number, is she going to call him later? He looks back up toward the direction his blonde crush was walking to see her in the distance, walking with her friend. He bites the inside of his lip before putting the note into his pocket.

“What was that about?” Allison asks, glancing over her shoulder to see Max pedaling away on his bike.

“Oh, nothing.” Casey grins as she walks. “Just apologizing for embarrassing me in class.”

“Oh!” She nods before squealing softly. “Anyway! My mom said your costume will go great with ours.”

“Do I really have to be a peasant while your whole family, as well as their friends, are wearing Masquerade outfits?” She groans slightly.

“She said there were only two dresses so she had to get you something else.” Allison says, shrugging.

“I knew I should have gotten the bunny costume when I had the chance.” Casey mumbles, walking down the road.

Max is ready to go back home to California. Today has been one of the worst days of his entire life. First, he embarrasses his crush in class. She said he didn’t, but he knows he did. Then he was stopped at the graveyard by two wanna-be rapper bullies, Jay and Ernie. Sorry, Ice - not Ernie. Lastly, they took his brand new shoes!

His shoes! What jerks take someone else’s shoes? He had to pedal all the way back home in just his socks. It was so humiliating. He parks his bike next to the house and practically stomps up the stairs to the back door. Slamming the screen door open, he opens the wooden door that leads to the kitchen to see his mom and dad putting away items from their move.

“Hey, Max!” His mom says, smiling at him. “Hey, how was school?”

“It fucking sucked.” He says, leaving the door open as he makes his way through the room.

“Hey, hey, hey, watch your language.” His dad says, standing up from the floor.

He ignores him and starts walking up the stairs that lead to the bedrooms.

“I can’t believe you made me move here!” He calls down before walking to his door.

He slams his head against the wood, next to his name plate that he put there, causing his hat to bunch up. He sighs and smacks the door with the side of his fist. Taking a second to himself, he opens the door and throws his book bag onto the floor near to his drum set. He rips his hat off his head and throws it against the stairs in his room that leads to the window seat above.

He shakes off his jacket as he walks and tosses it to the ground behind him. Trying to calm himself down, he sighs deeply as he looks out the window before glancing down at the fish tank he has beside his bed. He picks up their container of food.

“Hey, guys.” He says, leaning down to sprinkle some into the water.

He puts the flakes down before sitting on his bed, laying back into the pillows. There was one good thing about today, though. She talked to him! He rolls away from his fish tank and grabs one of his extra pillows, cuddling it to his chest. He grins to himself as he thinks about her. Her voice. Her hair. Her smile…

“Oh, Cas.” He mumbles, smiling as he closes his eyes, imaging her right beside him. “You’re so soft. I just wanna hug…”

His closet doors slam open as a child's voice is heard.

“Boo!”

He jumps slightly, looking over his shoulder as he lets his pillow go.

“Dani!” He snaps at his little sister who was hiding in his room.

She laughs and squeals in victory as she claps, knowing she scared him. She runs toward him, still laughing and jumps over him to lay down. He sits up, raising an eyebrow at her as all his anger from the day comes back.

“I scared you, I scared you!” She leans up so she’s close to his face. “Ha-ha! Ha-ha! Ha!”

He shakes his head but before he can speak, she lays back and throws her arms out, a smile still on her face.

“I’m Cas! Cas! Kiss me, I’m Cas!”

Embarrassed that his sister caught him daydreaming about his crush, he stands up and looks at her.

“Mom and dad told you to stay out of my room!”

“Don’t be such a crab.” She says, standing up on his mattress before jumping up and down. “Guess what. You’re taking me trick-or-treating.”

He sighs and shakes his head. “Not this year, Dani.”

“Mom said you have to.” Dani says, jumping off his bed, landing on her feet beside him.

“Well, she can take you.” He says, turning to walk away.

She grabs him by his sleeve and pulls him back.

“She and dad are going to a party at Town Hall.”

“Well, you’re eight! Go by yourself.” He says, pulling his shirt from her hand and walking to his drum set.

He sits down as he grabs his sticks and immediately begins to play a beat, ignoring his sister as he closes his eyes. She sighs with a determined look on her face and walks over to him.

“No way! This is my first time! I’ll get lost! Besides, it’s a full moon outside! The weirdos are out!” Noticing he isn’t backing down, Dani walks around the drum set to wrap her arms around her older brother’s shoulders forcing him to stop playing. “Come on, Max. Couldn’t you forget about being a cool teenager just for one night? Please…Come on. We used to have so much fun together trick-or-treating. Remember? It’ll be like old times.”

He shrugs her off and shakes his head. If he was going to willingly take her, that just ruined her chances.

“No. The old days are dead.” He says, beginning to play the same beat again.

Dani puts her hands on her hips and glares at him.

“It doesn’t matter what you say. You’re taking me!”

He instantly stops and looks at her, the same glare on his own face.

“Wanna bet?”

He drops his sticks onto the Floor Tom drum and jumps up from his seat. He runs up the small flight of stairs, skipping a few steps and sits at the top, near the window seat, crossing his arms on his knees. His little sister stomps toward the stairs before putting her hands on her hips again.

“MOM!!!!” She screams loudly.

Going Trick or Treating with Max and Dani would include~

- If we want to imagine that Max isn’t convinced to go along with his sister because of Dani herself and his parents alone, then you are definitely almost entirely responsible for his decision to go: whether it’s purely because he wants to spend time with you or if it’s because he wants to “protect you” is up for debate.

- Since there’s absolutely zero chance that Dani isn’t going to go trick or treating, the two of you probably form an alliance and help to convince him to go along with your plans. Part of how you convince him is probably by pointedly telling Dani that you’ll take her; making him jealous that you’re gonna choose to spend time with his sister instead.

- Or, if you’d like to think that Dani got him to go along with her all by herself, then he probably came across you while out with her and convinced you to come along with them; not that you needed much convincing to begin with. Depending on your relationship and how you seem to feel about Halloween, he may or may not pretend that he willingly went along with his sister the whole time and that he is, in fact, really enjoying himself.

- He definitely teases you about wanting to go trick or treating and probably about your costume as well; even though he thinks you look kind of cute/hot, but if anyone else were to even look at you in a slightly condescending way, he would kill them with a single glance.

- In return, you tease him about his lack of costume/his halfhearted attempt at dressing up and how embarrassed/awkward he is. He secretly likes your spunk and how little the opinion of others seems to mean to you; even if he doesn’t say anything about it.

- He still rolls his eyes whenever you brag about the candy you got or the compliments the sweet old ladies gave you after you knocked on their door with Dani.

- He definitely steals some of your candy because he refuses to just go up and take some of his own. That being said: if you’re a little shy when it comes to actually going up to peoples doors and actively trick or treating, Dani will use her little girl powers and ask for extra candy for her “older siblings” and 90% of the time it’ll work.

- All three of you wind up holding hands at some point.

- He gives you his jacket if you get cold; even though he’ll probably insist that you should have worn a warmer costume before he finally relents.

- His parents absolutely get a bunch of photos of the three of you together; and some of just the two of you. They coo over you guys like you’re a bunch of newborn babies.

- The three of you stay out late, late enough that he winds up giving Dani a piggyback ride as she dozes off on his shoulders. And though he doesn’t want to admit it, he actually really enjoyed himself.

bio:

much like most other people in town, whitney has been fascinated with salem witches from a very young age. of course, it doesn’t hurt that her parents and aunt defeated the sanderson sisters in the 90′s. sure, no one ever believes her when she tells that story, but it’s something that her family is very proud of. it also caused max and allison to be constantly cautious, especially around halloween, and they did everything they could to make sure that whitney stayed as far away from dangerous places as possible.

of course, whitney being whitney, she was very much attracted to said dangerous places. she loved exploring abandoned and creepy places all year, but especially on halloween. she started off doing it alone, but eventually her cousins and sibling started tagging along, whether they actually wanted to explore or just wanted to make sure the rest of them didn’t get into too much trouble. she wouldn’t dare tell her parents, or even her aunt dani, so for right now it’s her little secret

she may be max and allison’s daughter, but she gets her attitude from her aunt. there have been many occasions where she really should have kept her mouth shut, but she was never one to hold her tongue.

Max Dennison

LEE:

-As the older brother, I imagine him being ticklish, so like a 6/10

-He’s most ticklish on his hips, armpits, neck, sides, and knees

-I picture him having a bit of a cackle, or just some type of loud laughter

-He’s tickled a bit by Allison and a lil bit by his dear little sister Dani.

-those are also his favorite lers

-Not really affected by raspberries or stuff like that, and I think rough tickles affect him more

-he happens to beg and talk during tickling

LER:

-pretty good Ler

-tends to usually always get Dani laughing

-like duh they’re siblings ofc they tickle each other

-max usually wins…

-he is merciful so do not worry!

-he tickles Allison a bit to hear her sweet giggles and tickles Dani mostly ehe

-he doesn’t care about the spots too much he just tickles you until you beg

Dani Dennison

LEE:

-She’s a very ticklish little girl, coming to a good 9/10

-She’s pretty sensitive all over but I think she’s most ticklish on her stomach, armpits, neck, and feet (the obvious spots)

-she’s got bubbly laughter (like a child)

-Her and Max are usually always tickling each other when in a goofy ah mood

-She sometimes squeals during tickles

-I think she lost raspberry ticklishness but I also think she still has it

LER:

-she is mostly the lee in situations ..

-if she is the Ler, she tends to get really playful and she has much fun

-I think she knows when to stop because she is a good well behaved little child

-Okay but between max and her they noted each other’s spots 💀

-I don’t really have much for Dani being a Ler, so I might end her headcanon here

Allison Watts

LEE:

-okay she isn’t too ticklish so she ranks like a 6/10

-I don’t have too much info on her but it I’ll try my best

-so her and max tend to tickle each other sometimes just to hear each other laugh.

-she’s most ticklish on her hips, armpits, and feet

-bubbly laughter and a cackle (sometimes squeals)

-She and Max love each other dearly so Max is her favorite Ler

LER:

-She won’t tickle you for that long don’t worry 😉

-She knows your spots yep yep yep

-She knows maxs spots too

-she gets playful sometimes

Talking Cat//Hocus Pocus Drabble

A/N: Imagine being Max and Dani’s big sister and them coming to you for help on Halloween.

“We all go a little mad sometimes…”

You jumped at the sudden pounding on your door. The popcorn in your lap went flying and your hands flew to your chest. ‘Damn teenagers’ you sighed, climbing to your feet and brushing off your witch costume as Norman Bates telling Vivian Leigh all about his mother. The pounding on the door continued.

“I’m coming!” You hurried to grab the candy bucket off the table and swing open the front door expecting to see some out of costume teenagers who are far too old to be trick or treating. Instead you find your brother and sister with another girl and...a cat?

“Max? Dani? What are-”

“Y/N!” Dani threw herself forward into you, hugging your middle with one arm and clutching the black cat closer to her chest with her other arm. Immediately one of your arms wrapped around her as you looked at Max questioningly.

“Y/N, look it’s a long story but we’re in a lot of trouble and we need your help!” Max urged desperately, a far cry for his normal moody teenager behavior.

“What kind of trouble?” You asked looking up and down the street, half expecting to see some bully or psycho running after your brother and sister.

“It’s going to sound crazy but- “Max is a virgin and he lit the black flame candle and brought the Sanderson sisters back from the dead and now they’re after us!” Dani hurried, launching herself back from you and adjusting her witch hat on top of her head.

You looked at her then to Max then to the girl beside him. She and Max both nodded hesitantly.

“Okay…” You cleared your throat. “And the cat is…?”

“Oh, this is Binx. The Sandersons turned him into a cat.”

You laughed, “Okay, okay, nice prank you guys. It’s Halloween and you got your tricks in. Max, are you going to introduce me to your girlfriend?”

“Y/N, it’s not a prank, I swear!” Max pleaded. “These hags are after us and we need some help!”

“Max, you cannot possibly expect me to believe that-”

“I’m serious!”

“He’s telling the truth!” The blonde girl and Max cut over you as you shook your head.

“Okay, why don’t you guys just come inside and we’ll get you some candy and I’ll call mom and dad.”

“You can’t call them, they’re at a party at town hall, the Sanderson sisters already chased us out of there.”

“Max-”

Before you could finish your sentence someone yelled cutting you off, “They’re coming!”

It took you a minute to process that it was the cat that was yelling. Your eyes bulged and you couldn’t be bothered to resist when Dani, Max, and the blonde girl pushed you back and rushed inside your house, shutting the door behind them. The blonde girl locked the door while Max eyed the peephole carefully trying to see who was outside. You were too focused on the cat your sister was clutching.

“Did he just-”

Dani smiled, “I told you so.”

TITLE: Manual of Witchcraft & Alchemy AUTHOR: Unknown, possibly the Devil ORIGIN: Hocus Pocus (movie directed by Kenny Ortega, 1993) This cursed spellbook is said to have been given to Winifred Sanderson in return for her soul, and possibly the souls of her sisters, Sarah and Mary. Contained within are instructions for many types of black magic, such as the transformation of a human being into an animal, resurrection of the dead, the summoning of demons, a variety of excruciating punishments, and a potion that allows the drinker to extend one's own life and youth by consuming the life energy of children. It displays some level of animation and awareness, and thus should be handled with extreme caution. We are informed by a reliable cat that no good can come of it. A couple of days late for Halloween, I suppose, but I had to include this one anyway. This is a picture of the actual prop, taken from a Halloween event back in 2016 at Hollywood's El Capitan theater that showcased a variety of props, costumes, and concept art from both Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The book is never called by its title in the movie, but it is indeed called Manual of Witchcraft and Alchemy, based on the title page that’s seen at least once. It also includes two Latin phrases: "Divus Jacobus diabolicis praestigiis ante magum sistitur," which translates to "St. James is arrested before the magician by diabolical delusions," and "Idem impetravit a deo ut magus a demonibus discerperetur," which means "Hence he obtained from God that the magician should be torn to pieces by demons." It turns out that these are the captions of two different 1565 engravings designed by the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, entitled "St. James and the Magician Hermogenes" and "The Fall of the Magician Hermogenes," respectively. The former is reportedly the earliest known depiction of a witch riding a broomstick, but other than that I can't imagine what these phrases could have to do with the spellbook in-universe, so I assume the prop designers picked them out as just some impressive-looking, witch-related Latin sentences.

My thoughts on Godzilla vs. Kong

Here's my personal view on Godzilla vs. Kong after seeing it once in theaters, and once on HBO Max.

Expect spoilers past the read more!!

Godzilla vs Kong Pros:

opening titles are fun as usual per the monsterverse

playing licensed music is something that normally annoys me with modern films but it’s fun when paired with the non-verbal Kong

Bernie

Denham university makes me wonder why the objectively worst character in the original Kong films gets all the slick references. Why not Jack Driscoll? Or even Ann Darrow?

As always, the process of loading a sleepy Kong onto a boat is left to your imagination

Julian Dennison is always great in these movies and brings and pairs well with Bernie and Madison’s antics

The Aircraft carrier fight overall is very good. Love Godzilla’s Jaws-esque pulling of the battleship by it’s anchor

All of the hollow earth creatures are fun, give me a strong harryhausen/early monster movie feel

The POV shots from the HEAVs look like they could be designed for some sort of motion-simulator ride at an amusement park

Godzilla uses his atomic breath in a lot of impressive ways but these scenes don’t overstay their welcome

Godzilla vs. Kong Cons (kongs?):

The Iwis were effectively forgotten. Monarch’s presence on Skull Island and APEX’s use of Skullcrawler eggs implies some sort of colonization on the island but that isn’t sufficiently explored

Bernie

Godzilla’s motivation to attack APEX is very weak. What’s attracting him there? Mechagodzilla? The Ghidorah Skull? Skullcrawler eggs? DOES HE JUST KNOW????

I mostly like the HEAVs but they’re a bit too glowy? The energy is very bright and eye catching but it’s design itself is very boring.

Overall I like the new Mechagodzilla but it’s design is just too industrial and blocky and not particularly interesting.

A lot of interesting lore is teased in the hollow earth segments but not enough info was given to really make this plot point worth it

Nowadays the crazy conspiracy theory subplot is a lot less cute given the mainstreaming of conspiracy theory culture over the last few years

Mechagodzilla taking control: are we supposed to believe it’s Ghidorah’s consciousness taking over? Is it Ren Serizawa?Is Mechagodzilla becoming it’s own sentient thing? Not enough info is given to really make this compelling

Unfortunately Alan Jonah and his eco terrorists are just kind of forgotten

Ren Serizawa is also wasted in this film, no acknowledgement of his relation to Serizawa senior, when that could be a great motivator for him to fight Godzilla

The movie just abruptly ends, somewhat anticlimactic ending scene

In summary: Godzilla vs Kong is a middling, if not acceptable entry into the MonsterVerse. Many of the shared universe’s flaws in previous films return in GvK, and I expect that these films will no longer be carried by the good will assumption that human characters don’t matter in these films. A bit more emphasis on the villains motivations and connection to prior films would have made Godzilla vs. Kong much more effective and tie the MonsterVerse together, but this film seems anxious to make good on ideas set up in the previous films. One gets the feeling that the MonsterVerse is “future-proofing” itself with Godzilla vs. Kong, assuring sequels can be set up and knocked down without changing much with the status quo of this world.

Yet the monster action in this film is very fun, and each time it starts to become droll, another monster or location is introduced to make it feel fresh again. Fans of Godzilla and Kong will assuredly enjoy this film, but I am hesitant to suggest this film to someone not invested in the MonsterVerse, or the larger Godzilla and Kong canon before some of the other more prolific and memorable entries in each franchise.

Hocus Pocus & The All New Sequel by A.W. Jantha

"Winifred threw her hands up. 'Why, why, why was I cursed with such idiot sisters?' she demanded. Sarah did a little twirl. 'Just lucky, I guess.'"

About: It's Halloween in Salem, Massachusetts, and Poppy Dennison couldn't be less thrilled that her mom is throwing a Halloween party. She's never believed the story of how her parents accidentally raised the three Sanderson witches from the dead on Halloween twenty-five years ago, so when her friends decide to bail on the party and visit the old Sanderson house, she's eager to go along with it. It's just a bunch of Hocus Pocus, right? Wrong. The witches are back, and Poppy will have to race the clock to save her family and all of Salem. Trigger warnings: child death, mild body horror (if you find being turned into a domestic animal horrifying), violence, bullying, threats.

Thoughts: For all my love of horror movies, Hocus Pocus is actually my favorite Halloween movie, and I usually watch it at least twice every Halloween season. It's goofy, cheesy, and heartfelt but with surprisingly good dialogue and all the witchy Halloween spirit I could ask for. (I may have had a crush on Billy Butcherson when I was a kid, until I grew up and realized "sporting with" meant he cheated on Winifred with her sister. What an undead jerk.) I don't read a lot of film novelizations, but it's hard to imagine a better one than this. It's utterly faithful to the original material and was clearly written by someone who loves it, and much of the dialogue and all of the plot come straight from the film--as it should be. Of course, if you memorized the film like I did, you don't need to read it, but it's a fun, hundred-page diversion of a story I already love. It's nicely paced, moving back and forth between Max and Dani's story and the witches' (instead of covering theirs in the opening scenes), and I had fun picking out an occasional clue about what was coming next.

The sequel is all new, but I'm hoping that the second film will tell a similar story because there's a lot to like about it. First and foremost, I like knowing that Max and Allison lived happily ever after together (though I was a little surprised to find Max still willing to live in Salem). Their daughter Poppy, her best friend Travis, and her love interest Isabella are better developed thanks to the benefit of exposition, and I liked all of them. They're wholesome, realistic teenagers who do dumb things to impress each other, and they work hard to right their mistakes and, in some small instances, the mistakes of their parents. I enjoyed Katie's character arc of reformed bully as well, and she probably has the best development in the book. I was also surprised to find a cute wlw relationship in it, since that's usually a bigger selling point.

Maybe it was because the first novel set a precedent, but the pacing isn't as effective in the second half. It's just a little too long for what it is, and the jokes start to run thin after a couple hundred pages. It's also not as tightly plotted, and it felt like Jantha was spinning their wheels by the end. The group doesn't have a clear plan for getting rid of the witches, ever, and there are simply too many elements added into the end to make it plausible. Hocus Pocus has always stretched believability a bit, but at least it was simple, which the sequel certainly is not by the time all is said and done. While I was a bit weary of it by the end, I enjoyed seeing new and familiar characters, and I hope to eventually see them (again) on the screen.

Misc. preference~ That ONE prank from X-files

I hope this is sort of what you were looking for Requester! I left out Harvey simply because I haven’t watched Sabrina in a long time and don’t think I could do him much justice but everyone else is still there! To save time, I’ll briefly describe the prank right here so I can just focus on their reactions/the specifics in their separate portions of this post.

Details of the prank for the non initiated: The victim gets inside of their car and finds a tape which, when played, tells the passenger (the victim) that there’s a bomb inside their vehicle set to explode the minute they open their car door. The passenger panics for a few moments before the door is opened from the outside, revealing the smiling face of the prankster; their gf/friend.

R.J. MacReady

The fact that this is something that could very well happen to R.J. in real life; considering the fact that he’s living in a lawless land alongside occasionally hostile political rivals, is overshadowed by how quickly he grows accustomed to your mischievous nature. You’ll very rarely be able to genuinely “get him” when it comes to pranks so don’t be surprised when he doesn’t give you much of a reaction.

He’ll sit there very still while he listens to the tape and he’ll flinch and whip his head around once you open the door, his eyes bugging out of his head, but he won’t reward you with any words or a scream: he’ll just stare at you in silence, wondering if you’ve genuinely gone insane. Which is; honestly, reward enough when it comes to how he normally behaves in regards to your tomfoolery.

Expect the silent treatment: like genuine silent treatment. He isn’t even pouting, he’s just not talking to you; regardless of how much you apologize and offer different favors to make up for it. He isn’t actually mad at you; maybe a bit miffed and somewhat embarrassed by how his stomach dropped down to his ass in a matter of seconds, but he is still determined to get revenge on you and your groveling is amusing enough for him to consider it payback.

All things considered, he’ll find you annoying in the moment but in time, he’ll come to be one of those grumpy old men who, decades later, talk about how their wives were the bane of their existence and the love of their lives. Can’t live with them, can’t live without them, right?

Will Smith

You could have done half the work and pulled a very lame and very ordinary jump scare on him and he still would have reacted in the exact same way: completely over the top. Sorry sweetheart, but you’re dating the drama king supreme and that’s just a fact. Although, something tells me that you’re well aware of that and you’re very pleased about it; given the fact that you’re such a little prankster.

He plays the tape thinking he’s about to hear Whitney Houston or something, and all of a sudden he’s “being targeted in a revenge ploy against his judge uncle by a team of seasoned criminals who are now going to murder him with pyrotechnics”. He’s begging god and his “mama” to save him, crying like a baby, and, once you open the door, he’s screaming longer than an opera singers high note and flinging his hands out like he’s grasping towards his loved ones who are about to be murdered too far away from him to save them. What can I say, he’s a performer.

Once he realizes what happened, he’ll go quiet for a couple moments before flipping out: calling you a psycho and asking what the hell is wrong with you while getting more and more flustered as you laugh at his reactions; trying to play it off like he didn’t just deliver an Oscar winning performance right in front of your eyes. Be prepared for a bit of pouting as well, and some very poor attempts to “get you back” in the following few days.

Max Dennison

Max definitely doesn’t have a car so I don’t know how you’re pulling this one off, but I digress….

He’s one of the few people in this situation who won’t stay mad at you and that’s entirely because he doesn’t want you to think that he was too scared and subsequently think he’s lame. Like yes, he went wide eyed as the tape played and screamed when the door opened, and his voice may or may not have cracked while saying “so it was all a joke” but by god, he’s gonna laugh it off and nervously tell you how you “got him good” while trying to calm his beating heart. Either that, or he’ll insist that he was just playing along and that you didn’t get him at all.

That being said: get ready for him to be touchy with you for the rest of the night, not because he enjoyed your prank but because he needs a little emotional aftercare after the bullshit you just put him through. Give him a hug you monster.
