‘Caviar in your company? I've been dreaming of this,’ Philippa winked, slid her arm under his, smelling of cinnamon and nard. ‘Let's make haste, then. Will you keep us company, Dorregaray? No? See you later, then; have fun.’

The wizard snorted and turned around. Sabrina Glevissing and her red-haired friend watched them leave with looks more poisonous than the venom of endangered cobras.

‘Dorregaray,’ whispered Philippa, unashamedly pressing herself to Geralt's side, ‘is a spy for king Ethain of Cidaris. Stay vigilant. The talk about reptiles and fur is a prelude to interrogation. And Sabrina Glevissig was pricking up her ears...’

‘...because she's spying for Henselt of Kaedwen,’ he finished for her. ‘I know, you've mentioned it before. And that ginger one, her friend...’

‘She's dyeing her hair. Don't you have eyes? It's Marti Sodergren.’

‘Whom is she spying for?’

‘Marti?’ Philippa laughed, her teeth flashing from behind spicy red lips. ‘For nobody. Marti's not interested in politics.’

‘Outrageous. I had the impression that everyone here is a spy.’

‘Many are,’ the sorceress winked. ‘But not all. Not Marti Sodergren. Marti is a healer. And a nymphomaniac. Ah, damn it, look! The caviar's been eaten! Every last grain! Someone's licked the bowl! What shall we do now?’

‘Now,’ Geralt smiled innocently, ‘you will announce that something's up. You'll tell me that I need to shed neutrality and make a choice. You will propose a wager. I cannot even imagine what my prize could be if I win. But I know what I will have to do if I lose.’

Philippa Eilhart was silent for a long while, not taking her eyes off him.

‘I should have known,’ she said quietly. ‘Dijkstra lost it. He gave you an offer. Even though I told him about your contempt for spies.’

‘I have no contempt for spies. I have contempt for spying. And for the contempt in itself. Don't propose any wagers, Philippa. I also feel that something's up. And let it be. I'm not involved and I don't care.’

‘You've already said it once. In Oxenfurt.’

‘I'm glad you remember. I hope you remember the circumstances as well?’

‘Perfectly. I didn't disclose to you the identity of Rience's master back then. I let him escape. Oh, how mad at me you were...’

‘That's an understatement.’

‘Now it's time to make amends. I'll give you Rience tomorrow. Don't interrupt, don't make faces. This is no wager. It's a promise, and I keep my promises. No questions, please. Wait till tomorrow. Now we shall concentrate on caviar and trivial talk.’

‘There's no caviar.’

‘Give me a moment.’

She looked around, moved her hand and whispered a spell. The silver vessel, shaped like a fish in motion, immediately filled with roe of the endangered lake sturgeon. The witcher smiled.

‘Can you satisfy hunger with an illusion?’

‘No. But it's enough for a craving. Try some.’

‘Hmm... Indeed... Seems more tasty than the real thing...’

‘And you won't gain weight,’ the sorceress proudly exclaimed, squeezing lemon juice onto the next spoonful of caviar. ‘Would you mind getting me a glass of white wine?’

‘Not at all. Philippa?’

‘I'm listening.’

‘Etiquette supposedly forbids the use of magic here. Wouldn't it be more appropriate to conjure up an illusion of taste alone? Just a sensory illusion? I'm sure you could...’

‘Of course I could,’ Philippa Eilhart looked at him through the glass. ‘The construction of such a spell would be easier than the construction of a flail. But sticking to a sensory illusion would rid us of the pleasure provided by the act of eating. The process, the movement, the gestures... The talk accompanying it, the eye contact... Allow me to entertain you with a humorous comparison, will you?’

‘I'm laughing already.’

‘I could conjure up an orgasm too.’

relationships / love aren’t actually all that much of a priority for shani. she’s a HOPELESS ROMANTIC at heart, but for her it is all about the idea of being in love rather than the actual real thing.

Like the whole thing with Geralt? Shani is NOT in love with Geralt, she is in love with the IDEA of being in love with him. Also Shani very firmly separates sex and love, she’s really sex positive tbh, it’s an enjoyable thing your body can do so why not? but she never equates it with love.

Shani is her own woman, always has been and always will be, she’s busy and she’s so focussed first on her study, then on her career that when she does get into a relationship she just kind of gets overwhelmed by the demands on her time and her presence and it makes her just - want to step back and draw a line.

also given her background and her work she’s seen a lot of the very worst side of relationships. Marti Sodergren who she really bonded with when they worked together at the Battle of Brenna (even though Shani was very contemptuous of her to start with they absolutely had the kind of bond you will form when you’re working in that kind of high stress high risk high trauma environment) was murdered by her jealous partner and Shani will never EVER forget that. she’s also seen a lot of family violence in her surroundings growing up so she’s super wary of things going wrong.

Musings on Tissaia & Francesca at Thanedd

Just finished S3 and can I just say, these two badasses were the standouts of the Thanedd Coup for me.

The unspoken equality between them as Tissaia stands on one side with all the mages behind her and Francesca, the elven queen directly across from her with the Nilfgaardians and the elves.

The way they look at no one else but each other before it all goes to hell, each woman knowing that the other one is the largest danger and threat there - Tissaia representing the human mages of the new order and Francesca representing the ancient order of the times when elven mages built Aretuza.

Finally, the epic moment when Tissaia prepares a deadly spell to kill Francesca (when Tissaia was the very same woman insisting Francesca was not their enemy in S2 while Stregobor and the Brotherhood were losing their shit over the elven exodus to Cintra).

And then the moment it all climaxes in a tragic trade of sorts - Tissaia destroys what Francesca loves most (Filavandrel) in front of her very eyes, so Francesca destroys and burns down what Tissaia loves most (Aretuza). All the other sorceresses - Rita, Sabrina, Keira, Triss, Fringilla, Marti, even Yennefer - are secondary to these two ladies in that moment - truly hell hath no fury like a sorceress scorned for these two proved it then and there.

And then, once Aretuza is in flames thanks to Francesca, how Tissaia falls into a numb state of sorts - she climbs the tower to resort to the most dangerous and life-draining spell known to mankind to destroy the elven invaders she once defended. This spell destroys everyone and everything - all the northern mages flee out of the way - only Francesca (and Fringilla) stays to fend off the lightning. Finally, when Tissaia can no longer keep up, the moment is perfect when all the northern sorceresses step in front of Francesca, making it clear she will not get to Tissaia so long as they live.

Ultimately, all the sorcerers were good - Rita who stayed there from start to end and defended Tissaia - Marti and Sabrina who destroyed people left and right and Bianca, Tissaia’s poor friend. But Tissaia and Francesca’s magic was by far the most epic of the entire battle. The absolute sheer destruction was amazing to watch. And the way they clearly targetted each other throughout the battle was perfect.

You know what the saddest thing is in the end? - in the books, few people were as close to Tissaia as Francesca was - here, they are mortal enemies instantly.

Side-note: I love how Philippa starts up shit and then escapes the moment it all goes to hell lmao

So many new things in the newest trailer to go through, so many good and crazy shots. V2 is gonna be amazing.

But anyways, I wanted to go through some of them and write them down for myself, so SPOILERS BELOW FOR S3/V2 since there’s a bunch of new shots from the trailer included.

These two shots are linked - originally I thought the eyes below were Yennefer's but this is Francesca 100%. In the shot above, we see Fringilla's head (her hair from the tavern) + Francesca's iconic braided hair - both of them are looking up at the fire circle that's crashing right down below on top of them - and then they both fall back if you watch the trailer. So the shot below is certainly Francesca watching as the fire collapses down on them. And those are her blue eyes, not purple like Yennefer's.

The shot above is continuation of that - Francesca seems knocked out or something and lands on Fringilla who protects them against the fire with magic in the very last second - this seems to be why the entire hall is completely destroyed in the following shots.

Here, we can clearly see Artorius Vigo (Fringilla's uncle) very much dead with Tissaia trying to desperately heal him - Margarita pulls her away in the very last second as fire explodes all around them (the firecircle that crashes on Francesca and Fringilla???) and puts up a shield to protect herself and Tissaia. So Artorius is a goner for sure. Tissaia and Rita save themselves in the last sec.

This one is interesting - for anyone who knows the books, all of the mages depicted here are part of the neutral faction of mages who were neither on Philippa's side or on Vilgefortz's, with some new tossed in as well.

There's Artorius Vigo, Bianca d'Este, Gerhart of Aelle (the oldest living sorcerer), Margarita Laux-Antille and Tissaia, plus more male mages - just extras but these should be Carduin, Marquard and Dorregaray. They seem to be defending against the arrows of the Scoia'tael who're standing across from them - since Artorius is alive here and the room looks fine here, this is before the fire circle crashes down. Also, since the elves are there, it would stand to reason Francesca is present as well - Fringilla and Cahir should be too. This could very well be the coup but it begs the question - where are Philippa, Sabrina, Keira and Triss, the northern sorceresses?

Sabrina being a badass Kaedweni HBIC in a new dress. The woman behind her in the first shot is Keira Metz, so they're definitely there after the ballroom has been destroyed. Knowing how she hates the elves, this rock is probs heading for one of them. There's more shots that seem to be in this same sequence from other promo material - Cahir swordfighting someone in this room, Francesca blocking a lightning bolt from Tissaia (she fires it from above), Istredd killing an elf, Stregobor staring in anger at the destruction.

I have no idea what's happening here but it looks terrifying - the ocean is completely dried up and Aretuza is burning down. The lightning probably means the portal in Tol Lara is going haywire and we know how that ends.

Perhaps the most devastating shot of this trailer for me. Margarita, Keira, Tissaia, Yennefer and Marti Sodergren staring at what is no doubt Aretuza falling down in flames once the coup has ended. Notice how Tissaia is completely grey - no doubt caused by the huge tragedy that has just destroyed everything she's ever worked for.

Can we talk about Francesca Findabair for a second?

Cause I actually love S3 but what they have inflicted upon this character is a huge problem. Francesca, the woman who was the most gorgeous woman at the Thanedd ball, so much so that even Geralt stared at her, has now instead been thrown into the forests where she’s running around hysterically looking for Ciri and waiting to be executed should Emhyr so decide??? A woman who didn’t care for anything and anyone in S2 and did as she pleased is now beaten down and waiting to see if the emperor supports Gallatin and orders her death? What. The. Fucking. Fuck.

You can’t introduce her as a mega-powerful sorceress in S2 who can kill hundreds with a wave of her hand but then have her screaming in horror as Geralt kills her brother in front of her (don’t even get me started on that - though I did love the scene with all the dead elves and her singing that sad song). And then, adding salt to injury, she waits for Emhyr’s mercy... Emhyr - the man who had her child killed. And now she’s working for the bastard while not even knowing about that particular info.

Literally everyone else is at the Thanedd Ball. They even included bloody Marti Sodergren but Francesca, one of the two major powers in the Nilfgaardian faction, along with Vilgefortz, is absolutely nowhere to be seen!!! Why did they do this? Why not have Tissaia reach out for a truce and invite her to Thanedd to represent the elves - it would’ve been a far better way to have her involved and turning on the Brotherhood... But no, instead they dress her in rags and toss her into the forests living like a peasant leader of some pathetic elven rebellion. They keep calling her a queen but treat her like everything BUT A BLOODY QUEEN.

Out of all the lodge sorceresses (some of them actually improved this season - Philippa was almost literally from the books, Yennefer is finally in character again, Sabrina is a proper bitch, etc.), Francesca’s character has suffered the most by far. And it’s infuriating as hell. Done ranting, sorry lol.
