Bruno's vision didn't see the whole picture. Sure, it saw the cracks on the walls of Encanto, but it didn't see the very thorns that were once controlled by the lovely Isabella causing it.
It showed Maribel standing in front of the house, but it didn't show the power that she now held... but now, as her family stared at the young woman in fear, cowering away from her, it was more than clear that it was too late... they were doomed, and there was no one to blame but themselves.
However, something - no, someone completely unexpected came to protect the family. The only member still with their power. The very same one that had been shunned until he disappeared.
"Bruno!"
"We don't talk about-" Abuela's face was shoved forward to catch sight of her only son's face, making her gasp. "Hijo!" She gasped. He put a finger to his lips and indicated his niece silently.
Maribel's face snapped back to where everyone was gaping, but her uncle had disappeared...
"Ah-ah," she tutted, waggling a finger at her family. "We don't talk about Bruno."

Bruno's little girl is all grown up;
Tumblr media
Summary; Even in a world where Claudine didn't grow up on the isle, she and Lefou Deux were destined to meet.
Trigger warning; Kidnapping, implied racism, implied abuse, etc.
Inspired by and meant to be a sequel to @dragoneyes618 's oneshot au where Claudine gets her gift after being adopted by Bruno.
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
Claudine Esther-Mary Madrigal had few memories of her life before the Madrigals. And all of them were vague.
A Creperie were she did all the work despite being too tiny to reach the stove.
A Church that turned away people who looked different. Turned away people who looked like her new family did.
A closet that was small even for a toddler-- more like a cupboard, actually--filled with crosses thay made her heart tighten.
A looming shadow.
A woman falling.
Another woman teaching her how to speak english and a few other languages in bits and pieces, warning her not to tell him.
None of them painted a pretty picture. Especially not when put together with the faded scars she had and her family's retelling of her 'surprise adoption'.
So it should be no surprise that Claudine never really went digging into her past. Nor should it that she never bothered asking. After all, who would want to know more about such terrible things when there was a high chance that it would only drudge up things that should stay forgotten? Things that they didn't want to know about... Things that they didn't want to remember.
But that didn't mean that she knew nothing about it. About where she came from.
When Prince Ben first made his proclaimation, word traveled fast-- even to the Encanto--and Her PapΓ‘ had sat her down and finally explained just where he had gotten her.
Claudine had been in shock for awhile afterwards. Not quite knowing what to think about the whole thing.
What was one supposed to think when finding out that they had essitently been kidnapped from a villainous religious zealot who had been locked away among other villians who also had children? Children who weren't lucky enough to have been saved like she had been.
But once that shock wore off, she became invested in every thing to do with the isle. And had quite possibly cheered the loudest when the barrier had been brought down for good.
Which led into the current predicament her family was arguing about where little ears couldn't hear:
New people had come to the Encanto.
All under 30.
3 boys not much older than her (twins 20, lone boy 19).
1 not much younger (16).
1 only nine years old.
1 girl not much younger (15).
And 5 little girls (twins 7, one 6, one 5, and one 3).
All in bad shape, the oldests willing to work. All refusing to say where they came from or how they knew of this place.
Abuela, cautious as ever in her old age, didn't like it. Feared that their sanctuary could be fully exposed if they allowed them to stay.
No one else in the family agreed, even as she tried to get them to see her point of view. She even slipped up and asked Dolores to evasedrop on them, something she hadn't done since Claudine was little.
Of course, Dolores refused and (gently) reminded her that times had changed. And then everyone else had gotten a chance to argue their case.
TΓo AgustΓn and TΓa Julieta argued they couldn't stay hidden forever, which Prima Isabela agreed with-- sighting the fact that if these kids and her luv, Bubo, had found them that others would come after. Whether or not they liked it.
Primo Antonio and Camilo along with Prima Dolores and her luv, Mariano, that it was nice to see some new faces around. And that they could do some good for the town.
Luisa and Maribel just thought that they should give them a chance, which Claudine herself silently agreed with.
Β TΓa Pepa and TΓo FΓ©lix then made the strongest point. Getting emotional as usual, which was certainly warranted in this situation.
"MamΓ‘, they're your Bisnietos' ages and they clearly need help. How can you be suggesting that we turn them away! Isn't that what the Encanto is for? Protecting people"
Abuela cut in "It's for protecting our people--" but Pepa wasn't having it.
"The moment they stepped foot in the Encanto they became OUR people!"
FΓ©lix hastily added in his own two cents "and if the Encanto allowed them in, then they must really need the help. Besides, when has the Encanto ever let anyone dangerous in? How dangerous could a bunch of children even be?"
"We don't even know where they came from!" The Matriarch of the family protested, though it was weaker than it was.
Claudine looked over at her PapΓ‘ to see what he thought, since he hadn't spoken up yet, just in time to see him stand. He said one thing and one thing only that would shock them all:
"They're from the isle of the lost".
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
Abuela ended up letting the gaggle of children stay after that and few in the Encanto protested.
They all remembered what Claudine was like when Bruno first brought her here. And even if they didn't, there were things that convinced them not to kick up a fuss about the arrangement.
Things like the scars that varied in age that couldn't be explained away by falls and other bouts of childhood clumsiness that mirrored the faded ones Claudine herself had.
Things like the haunted looks in the older kids' eyes that Claudine saw every day in the mirror in her own reflection.
Things like the slowly fading bruises and the whispers of dead siblings and cousins who never reached adult hood.
Things like the broken arm the littlest boy had and the large hand shaped bruise on the youngest girl's cheek.
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
Claudine wasn't sure how to feel about the new arrivals. Other than intrigued and sad, that is.
Would she had turned out as snarky and skittish and bitter as the oldest ones were had her PapΓ‘ never came to save her?
Or would she have turned out worse somehow? Meeker like Carlos had first been? Quieter like her father had once been?
Or would she had died long before she got to thay point?
The possibilities haunted her, almost as much as the implications of what the new comers' had been through did.
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
Claudine was a curious girl.
She was even what some would call nosey.
But she just preferred the term 'thorough In her research'.
Which is what she did when someone (a friendly and unsuspecting Luisa) was finally able to pry last names out of the new comers.
Leprince. LeGume. Bimbette.
Those were their last names. Or at least the ones they had given. And with those last names, 18 year old Claudine was able to find a series of documents that proved her father's words true.
As well as many of the rumors that had been flying around town since the children had gotten here.
Birth certificates.
Badly done School Records.
Medical files published by one Harry Badun.
A Kidnapping report on King Ben that named Gil as one of the ones who had nabbed him.
A report on what had happened during the 'Queen of Mean' Incident that named Gil as one of the people who had helped save Auardon.
Missing persons report on all of the kids that were currently in the Encanto.
And most horrifyingly of all, she found obituaries also published by Harry Badun for other relatives of the New comers. Siblings and cousins. Siblings and cousins who didn't make it to 18.
Nine to be exact.
Nine dead kids.
Six Boys.
Three girls.
Claudine wished she never looked.
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
The LeGume-LePrince-Bimbette cousins settled into the Encanto rather quickly and were met with little resistance, much to their surprise.
They moved into a small, fixxer upper, 'work in progress' house with just enough backyard for the kids to be able to run around in and got to work.
Junior and Bronze became movers and mechanics.
Gil arm wrestled people and babysat for money.
Claire became a seamstress and a duel teacher.
And Lefou Deux or Lee, as he went by now, became a toy maker while their little cousins and siblings went to school.
All of them were less than enthusiastic about becoming high school dropouts but knew that it sadly had to be done. How else were they supposed to be expected to keep a roof over all their heads?
And sure, it wasn't the most glamorous roof-- being thin, uninsulated, and filled with holes. But it was a roof.
And sure, it was crowded since they all had to share rooms but it wasn't all that bad since they didn't have any furniture to crowd it more. And sure, it was so cold that they had to huddle together for warmth most of the time but it was better than nothing.
At least that's what they told themselves until they could get something better.
πŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸπŸ€πŸ
4 months after the new comers had arrived in the Encanto, Claudine stood outside of the toy shop-- invisible to the naked eye, watching as the tallest and lengthest one ran around the shop. Fixing things.
It had become a habit of hers for reasons she could not explain. One that she wasn't sure her family knew of or would approve of.
She knew it was werid. And that some would even call it a bit creepy but she just couldn't help it.
The redhead worried about him. Had been worrying about him ever since she heard her Abuela and TΓas fretting over how he needed to eat more about a month after he arrived in town.
After that, Claudine just hadn't been able to get how thin he was out of her head. So, she had gotten into the habit of following him around and sneaking extra food into his lunch bag and goreceries. And so far, he hadn't seemed to notice.
Which Claudine was thankful for, since she wasn't sure what she'd do if she were ever caught.
Probably turn invisible and stay that way until he forgot what she looked like.
Annnnnnnd she was starting to sound like a stalker, wasn't she?
Claudine swatted that thought out of her head, noticing that it was nearly the boy's lunch break and quickly snuck into the small shop. Making sure to keep a tight grip on her bag when--
WHAM!
Claudine fell back, becoming visible as the contents of her bag spilled everywhere. Mixing with toy parts.
All the color drained out of her face as she slowly lifted her head and spotted the new comer, who was clutching his now bleeding nose and looking at her.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry. I didn't see you there--" the dark haired boy stammered, quickly helping her gather the contents of her bag. Including the wrapped arepas that Claudine had been planning on sneaking into his bag.
Claudine was sure that she was probably as red as her hair by now and waited for him to call her out on being the one who had been sneaking into his bag, dreading it, but to her surprise he said nothing. Holding them out to her.
"Uh gracias. Muy apreciada" she muttered meekly, snatching it back from him and shoving it back into her bag. Where her rats were still hiding, thankfully already.
"No problemo miss. It's the least I could do after rudely running into you like that. I don't know how I could have missed you. I should probably get my eyes checked " He joked, fidgeting with his gloves. Clearly expecting to get yelled at.
Claudine's heart ached, remembering how quick she was to expect the same for things that weren't her fault when she was younger.
"No, no. It was my fault. I should have been paying better attention " she rushed to assure him, not liking the far off look he was starting to get in his eyes.
"I'm Claudine by the way. Claudine Madrigal" She held her hand out to him in invitation, silently hoping the change of subject would work.
It did.
He quickly accepted her hand, grinning widely in a way that gave her butterflies before introducing himself. "Nice to meet ya Claudine, I'm Lefou Deux LePrince but everyone calls me Lee".
Looking into his eyes, Claudine was sure of one thing;
She was doomed.

Mirabel Madrigal is simply a nicer person than I am.
In the scene where the house is falling apart and the candle is going out but she's still trying to save it, the thought came unbidden into my mind that she should just...let it go out. Make her family see what it's like to live without a gift. Make her family see what it's like to live just like her.
Throughout the whole film she's there helping her family who doesn't really care too much about her, but she still helps because she loves them. Of course she still tried to save the candle, because she loves her family. And she did everything she could for them, even though she didn't have a gift.
That's probably why I'm not a Disney princess, but whatever

I was thinking of an ENCANTO CURSED GIFT AU: Where instead of cracks, casita shows the destruction of the family by corrupting the gifts, all the stress, sadness, and anger (especially of Abuelita) make the magic turn into a curse. Starting with Mirabel and them little poor Antonio (still deciding what curses would they have, a little help, please?). Just imagine, this still would portray Maribel as an outcast and the family as their own villains. And Antonio and Maribel relation as brothers!!
Oh nice!
As for what the gift's curses could be (in order), maybe:
Mirabel abruptly loosing her sight, becoming blind.
Isabela only growing dangerous plants, even though she wanted roses.
Luisa losing control of her strength...
Julieta's food only hurting people even more.
Pepa's rainstorms and hurricanes becoming more severe.
Dolores' hearing becoming too loud for her to handle with no pause.
Camilo not being able to shape shift anymore.
And Antonio not being able to talk to certain animals anymore...
Bruno won't suffer, because he already sees his gift as a curse.
Agustin and FΓ©lix also won't be affected by it, but they do have to constantly be there for the others in case something goes wrong (a lot of accidents did happen...)
Alma's curse would be the candle melting into a small flame, keeping the rest of her family trapped with their own curses.
Alma would still blame Mirabel for it all, resulting in most of the townspeople and even some of the Madrigals blaming her as well...
Yup, that means Bruno has to save the day, while also helping Mira guide through the world without sight.

i’ve seen like two people talk abt this slightly so i’m gonna delve into it more
the Madrigals could literally be villains- if abuela didn’t decide to help her community her children and grandchildren could be murderers
Pepa - if you make her mad she can and will blow you away in a hurricane, tornado, earthquake; or whatever else manifests when she’s angry.
Delores - anything you say can be heard clear as day. no secrets in the town when delores is around. if you say something bad about her or her family, you’d be in trouble; after all, she hears everything.
Camilo - people say he shapeshifts into YOU and is like an impostor but the movie never specified if he could turn into animals/other creatures or not. they said he can shapeshifts, so couldn’t he shapeshift into a dragon? or a lion? camilo could shapeshift into a giant and crush you beneath his shoe
Antonio - this is simple. β€œhey jaguar go kill that person” you piss off antonio and an army of animals is after you
Luisa - she could crush you
Isabella - no one talks about how great of a villain she could be. it’s canon that in the movie she creates a carnivorous plant that almost eats Maribel. if you annoy her, she could sneak poison ivy into your clothes. if she hates your guts, you might end up with yew berries in your dinner. isabella could poison you with plants or even strangle you with vines. she is literally terrifying
bruno and julieta can’t really be considered villains, as julieta is a healer and bruno cannot change the future, only sees it.
thanks for coming to my ted talk

How many of us watched Encanto yesterday.
Anyways yes I agree Bruno deserved more screentime plus that scene where he sings(side note, I don't think he's apologizing more like clearing things up) should have been the family apologizing to him.
Ik that since this is a movie and the apologies between Abuela Madrigal and Maribel and Bruno can't be that deep, but a little bit more remorse over her actions wouldn't have hurt
I agree, and yeah thanks for more insight I might have glossed over that part of the movie HAHA
I feel like Bruno could have been given a larger role, obviously they wanted to subvert the villain expectation by having him be a misunderstood good guy but then he kind of disappears after that.... Maybe having him be revealed during the casita destruction scene and the family thinks he's the one destroying it would have been more powerful? And then that's when Maribel reveals it is actually Abuela's crushing expectations destroying the casita and the family... Idk i think there were way more ways they could have looped Bruno in rather than leaving him as a footnote

I'll never stop thinking about Bruno Madrigal and Abuela Almas's reunion.
The fact that Bruno arrived shouting: "She didn't do this! She didn't do this!", probably scared that the Abuela was going to blame Mirabel for everything that had happened, proceeding to put the blame on himself: that he was the one that told her the prophecy, that Maribel only wanted to help.
And not satisfied with that, Bruno also tells Alma that he doesn't care (anymore) what she thinks of him, but to please don't blame Mirabel for the destruction of the house.
Bruno was so ready to fight his mother, who he hadn't seen for a whole freaking decade and had previously admitted he was afraid of, just to protect Mirabel.
Because he didn't want anyone to suffer the same fate as he did, to be excluded from the family for a catastrophe he had no control over.
And that's why I love Bruno Madrigal so much

If you know me or this blog then you already know what I am about to say, but hear me out anyway:
Luisa/Mirabel OTP. I want it, I need it. I might even ship it harder than Elsanna, or not, but I need it anyway. Gimme strong protective older sister with nerdy and adorable sister that wants to help her out. Gimme Luisa being scared of hurting Mirabel and Mirabel teaching her how to be gentle. Luisa feeling so guilty because that is her little sister and Mirabel so confused, but in the end neither can stop it.
Bruno knowing from the start it would happen and being the most casual about it. "We are CLEARLY not a normal family anyway so might as well."
Isabella learning about it and chosing to be supportive for once. Dolores knowing too, even when they don't, but keeping the secret. There is so many possibilities.
College AU. Villain AU where the Madrigal are all evil doers. Normal AU without power. Maribel has a gift AU. But everything about Luisa/Maribel.

i watched encanto and while the songs were better than most disney musicals these days, it seemed weirdly pro-monarchy/feudalism
one family, gifted with a divine miracle, is the centerpiece of their town. they say they feel obligated to help the regular citizens, but honestly, if they just chose not to, what would those citizens do? rebel against the family who has literal magic? probably not
spoilers below
maribel, the only ungifted member of her family (besides her abuela and those born outside it) is cast aside and seen as inherently not-as-good until she fights for/ends up restoring their magic. she maintains the status quo and in so doing finds acceptance by her other family members
abuela, the only other member of the madrigals who doesn't possess any magic, is shown to be the source of the family breaking. like she's the closest thing to a villain this movie has and it's because she takes away her family's magic
much to think about. much to ponder on

Maribel: "You didn't deserve someone like Bruno! You pushed him out of the village and out of our family because you were in denial of natural parts of life, and of aging. Bruno made your goldfish die? Bruno made you go bald and made you fat? Newsflash: gaining weight and losing hair is part of aging. Maybe if you didn't spend so much time in denial about your sad, pathetic lives, we could talk about Bruno! But no. You wanted a scapegoat to blame for all of your issues! Well, I will no longer be the new scapegoat. This village doesn't deserve people like Bruno or like me."
Bruno: *steps out of the shadows*
Maribel: "So that's why I'm happy to announce that we're burning it to the ground."

Let’s Talk About Encanto
This was going to be a proper review of Encanto but, after seeing it twice, i literally don’t have enough to properly critique it. It’s absolutely forgettable and i find that odd because this is a genuinely good movie. It’s not top tier New Golden Age Disney but it’s still pretty good. Since Tangled dropped a whole ass decade ago, Disney Animation has been killing it. Wreck-it Ralph, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, Moana, Raya, and the unrelenting juggernaut that is Frozen, have given that Nineties run, a proper run for it’s money. Noe of these are as good as The Lion king, Beauty and the Beast, or Aladdin but they kind of sh*t on every one on that list. That’s why it’s so hard for me to say that Encanto feels like the first miss of this new age.
Don’t get me wrong, there is A LOT to love about this movie. My notes are riddled with sh*t that i adored throughout this thing. The music is really good, the animation is f*cking gorgeous, and i love the representation. This family looks like actual Latino familiesΒ  whom i know. The very rich, very diverse, rainbow of color which makes up Latin people, is very much presented here. I loved seeing the curly hair and the dark skin among the Madrigals. That sh*t is rare in cinema. I love the fact that Stephanie Beatriz really got to do her thing as the lead, Maribel. I love her as Rosa on Brooklyn 99 but it was dope seeing her be someone else, someone closer to who she is in real life. I loved the writing and the plot. I loved that this film took on the very difficult subject of generation trauma and how that sh*t is often passed down through ethnic families, not just Latino familias. There is so much to love in this flick, so much awesome sh*t, so why did i not care?
I’ve seen this thing twice and it’s not hitting me like the first Wreck-it Ralph, Zootpia, or Moana. It’s not staying with me like Raya and Tangled. I don’t know how better to describe this feeling. Encanto feels like filler, like an outlier, which is weird because Disney was able to successfully pull of this formula. Several times. The aforementioned Moana and Raya are to their respective ethnic origins as Encanto is to it’s own. So why did those work? Why did those stay with me and Encanto didn’t? If i liked so much of this thing, why don’t i care about it? Encanto feels like The Hunchback of Notre Dame; A misplaced masterpiece among classics. It’s a really f*cking good film, i can’t stress that enough, but it feels inconsequential. I understand why cats are saying Disney is buying reviews because, honestly, there’s not much to review. This thing is more a character study than an actual plot driven film. No antagonist, no real conflict outside of the family drama. This thing is so small, so intimate, and i think that’s why it’s not connecting like it should.
Encanto has a very specific message, a very narrow story to tell. It’s going to resonate with finite demographic and others are going to find that plot difficult to penetrate because of it. Moana benefited from The Rock. Raya benefited from Avatar: The Last Airbender. What does Encanto have that makes it relevant to a wider audience? What does Encanto have to pull in the not-so-Brown audience? Not a f*cking thing. There is no villain, no pathos, no climax. It’s literally just a therapy session for whoever wrote this thing and that sh*t is not very entertaining when you get down to it. Unless you can identify with the very ethnic conflict of this story, you’re going to have a hard time engaging and an even harder time caring. Encanto is good. Really good. Everyone should watch it at least once just to gauge the temperature, so to speak. I liked the film but i have no interest to ever watch it again.
