Without racial bias, an AI model predicts the risk of breast cancer

Researchers at the Radiological Society of North America introduced a groundbreaking deep learning AI model.

This model, relying solely on mammogram images, accurately predicted the risk of both ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive breast cancer. The traditional risk assessment models, usually based on patient questionnaires, haven't been very precise on an individual level and have shown racial biases.

This AI model, however, showed no bias across multiple races and outperformed traditional models. Its accuracy was assessed using the AUC (Area Under the Curve) measurement, which gauges predictive ability on a scale from 0 to 1. Across all races, this AI model consistently scored 0.71 in predicting both DCIS and invasive cancer, surpassing traditional models' performance.
