To the Immaturity of the Season
CW! Blood, murder
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d like to think Mama Lan made a choice of leaving love in her boys’ hearts over bitterness. I’d like to think there was an initial attraction between mama Lan and qhj, removed from other social context and ties that they later had to discover. I’d like to think mama Lan found a value in remembering that, as fleeting as it had been. I’d also like to think mama Lan had a hint of sardonic sense of humour while qhj was a blushing fumbling straightforward boy.

Guys, I just now noticed one more interesting little detail in the Untamed!
You know the names of the buildings in the Cloud Recesses: the lecture room/hall Lanshi (兰室, Lánshì, "Orchid Room"); Yashi (雅室, Yǎshì, "Elegant Room") – the reception room/hall; the spirit-summoning room/hall Mingshi (冥室, Míngshì, "Underworld Room" or "Room of Darkness"); Hanshi (寒室, Hánshì, "Frost Room") - Lan Xichen's residence; and Lan Wangji's Jingshi (静室, Jìngshì, "Quiet Room"), right?
The character used to write the "shì", room, in the names is 室, here seen in the Lanshi and the Yashi (the names are read from right to left):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a side note, the Lan seem to use the traditional rather than the simplified characters, so the "lán" in the Lanshi is written with 蘭 rather than 兰.
BUT. Not so in the Jingshi! Instead of the 室, a slightly different character is used for the "room":
Tumblr media
My trusty dictionary did not know the character in question, so I started to look at what was different:
Tumblr media
As such, the character 凶 (xiōng) means act of violence, murder, evil. An evildoer. A murderer. And as Lan Xichen told Wei Wuxian, we know who lived in the Jingshi before it became Lan Wangji's residence: "It is the place where our mother lived in the Cloud Recesses".
Tumblr media
So, it seems that when the house became Madam Lan's prison, the character was changed to reflect her crime, denoting the place as the quiet room of a murderer. Accentuated by the reversed colours of the sign:
Tumblr media
This has probably been quite self-evident to anyone who actually speaks and reads Chinese, but was quite an oooff! to me as I realised. One more killer detail in CQL 😟.
And while I was at it, I just had to check what it says above the gate (seen here when LWJ returns home with the Emperor's Smile):
Tumblr media
As far as I can read it, the characters are 影竹堂 (yǐng zhú táng), which I freely translate as "Bamboo Shadow Court". An apt name for the place.
Tumblr media
Hopefully it offered some solace to Madam Lan.
And oh, I just have to add! As Hanshi is the Sect Leader's residence, Lan Xichen is living in their father's house, while Lan Wangji is living in their mother's. And the two houses are more or less identical, down to the furnishings (just check the scene where Lan Xichen confronts Wen Chao and his muddy boots in ep8 vs. The Wangxian Scene in ep43). So did Qingheng-jun have the house built for his wife, identical to the house she was not allowed to live in? That is quite plausible, in universe. Out universe, they probably had only so many buildings to shoot in :).

The backstory that I want to know the most from MDZS is Madam Lan. I have so many questions about how that story went.
Why did she kill the teacher? I doubt it was just a fun little murder she committed cause if it was then they never would have let her live let alone let her children be the heirs of the sect. Plus a woman killing a man in a position of power is usually for a good reason.
If she and Qingheng-jun were in seclusion in different houses, how did Wangji and Xichen come about? Like did they have conjugal visits with each other or something? Was it only because Qingheng-jun needed and heir? If so, why was Wangji also allowed to be born?
How did she die? Was it suicide because she was confined to a home and only allowed to see her children once a month? Did she get sick?
Why were her children only allowed to see her once a month? That is a really long time to go in between visits especially for kids who were probably taken away from her right after being born.
I just think there is a lot about her that needs to be explained.

this is the first time i'm explicitly putting a name to a character that canonically exists, xiao laopo doesn't count cos that's a title but madam lan didn't have a known title before she was madam lan, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Okay, we all think Lan Qiren was very much like a young Lan Wangji when he was a teenager, baby faced, fuddy duddy, stickler for rules. But what if he was more teasing and smiling like Lan Xichen and changed drastically after you-know-what happened?
Young Lan Qiren: Why do you care what X-guiniang does? She's a rogue cultivator anyway.
Qingheng Jun: She's arrogant, impulsive...
Young Lan Qiren: Xiongzhang has a crush! Xiongzhang has a cruush! Xiongzhang, X-guiniang sitting on a tree, K-I-S....
Qingheng Jun: Preposterous!!
Modern day
Lan Wangji: Wei Wuxian is disruptive, impudent...
Lan Xichen: Aww, sounds like you have a little cru...
Lan Qiren: Don't you dare finish that sentence!!

ever think about the great sect madams of the generation before?
about madam yu, the violet spider, one of few in her generation to earn a title (even her husband was only ever sect leader. even wen ruohan was never regarded by a title other than sect leader wen). about yu ziyuan, about what she was like before years of jealousy and envy twisted her to only her most bitter parts? about the girl who was the third daughter of a sect leader, and then the wife of another, and yet all of her immense martial power meant nothing to the society around her.
about madam jin, known only by her title and never given a name or a natal sect, who was still somehow the closest friend to yu ziyuan. the mother of the sect heir and yet a wife who can do nothing but stand by as her husband dishonors their marriage over and over again.
about madam lan, the murderess locked up for her crimes, never seeing a trial and dying alone, only allowed to see her children once a month. who was she before she was the wife of the lan sect leader? was there a reason she killed the lan elder? did she want that marriage to qingheng-jun? did she even want the children she was kept from?
about the madams nie and wen, who only exist by implication, by the knowledge that their children exist and therefore so must they. about how so little is even implied about them?

i seriously don't get it when people say that lan wangji doesn't really know love outside of wei wuxian.
his entire damn character is about learning about love, about what is love and what is obsession and how he loves way too much.
he knelt in snow, an entire day every month, for god knows how many years, just to get a glimpse of his mother - just looking for a small sign that indicated that he hasn't lost one of the only few people that understood him.
his love for his brother, the only person who ever understood him completely, and the only person who put his happiness above everyone and everything - as quite as breathing, but just as necessary. i strongly disagree with anyone who says that lan wangji might not have done the same thing as wei wuxian if the twin jades swapped places with the yumeng prides (giving his golden core to his brother). because while lan wangji might've lived for his wei ying, i'm pretty sure he'd just as easily die for his brother.
his love for a-yuan, his dear son, which he might believe to be selfish - not letting go of the last piece in the world that still had ties to wei ying - but is most certainly what gave the child a new life. a life in which he would not be scowled upon, a life where he doesn't have to live under the pressure of a war in which all the part he had was being born into the stomach of a wen, and a life which gave lan sizhui the childhood he had to give up. it's clear in the way he raised him, to not become a shell of what he was, to be able to question when necessary, and put himself and his safety above all - even rules. it's clear in the way lan sizhui grew up to be. he might have taken in a-yuan because of wei wuxian, but he more certainly loved lan sizhui enough to burn the entire world for him.
(even his love for little soundless creatures is as fierce as it can get.)
and i don't even have to talk about wei wuxian. his silent, unconditional devotion towards the love of his life, not expecting anything in return, did not even expect the love back. just wanted to protect the one of the most important person in the entire world for him and fight alongside him. be there by his side as long as wei wuxian's willing to accept him because he would die before he would force wei ying and let him become a shadow of what his mother was. he might have inherited his love from his father, but he loved his mother enough to never let anyone face the pain she went through if it was in his hands.
lan wangji is the embodiment of what lan sect is - what it actually was, when it was established - in every way. he cannot control how fiercely he loves and that, is both a curse and a boon in one.
wei wuxian might have the heart to love as many people as the ocean is wide, but lan wangji has the heart to love the people he cares for as deep as the said ocean.
they both teach us so much about love!
fuck! i absolutely love this novel.
(i wrote this in a very emotional state after reading a very angsty piece so i apologize if it sounds like gibberish, but i sincerely hope what i mean to say comes through.)

Thank you all for voting in the poll to decide who was going to be the leader of the band! It turned out to be such a close race!
#poorly drawn mdzs#better drawn mdzs#mdzs#madam lan#A-qing#Band AU#(Reminder that Madam Lan's design inspiration goes to Qourmet!)#Madam Lan may have been the winner per vote count but there were so many strong advocates for A-Qing!#I played around with a few versions of what the 'poll winner' art was going to be and ultimately decided I wanted them both.#As any good theater love knows though - The battle for leadership was a ruse. They *all* get a chance to be featured.#Cooperation was the real end goal! However I do think these two have the best frontman energy of the group.#Or at least 'crowd favourite' energy. I also really loved hearing what people thought their vocal styles would be like!#This was probably one of my favourite polls to do and I love drawing these characters a lot B*)#I'd love to spend a bit more time in this AU so count on me bringing it back.#One thing I keep feeling like I need to redeem myself on is Madam Lan's Translucent skirt. I have *not* done the concept justice yet.#It is such a crack-platonic ship but I want to think Madam Lan and A-Qing would enjoy each other's company.#Possibly also with JYL as well. They can be like mutually beneficial therapy dogs to each other.#Madam Lan never got to see her kids grow up into teenagers after all. She only had sons. Never daughters.#Even if she saw her kids once a month we do know she treated them with so much love and kindness.#She would bite the shit out of YZY for yelling at JYL. What a sight to see. A-Qing would also start biting (for fun).

I saw a fic where Madam Lan lives because she faked her death and ran away, then she comes back post-canon - she's trying to "rescue" Wwx because she thinks Lwj is just like his father - and the twin jades forgive her without even a second thought. BUT WHAT IF she came back and they didn’t forgive her for leaving them behind? Yes, they understand why she did that, but how can they forgive her for not taking them too when Lxc was the one who had to raise his younger brother because their father never bothered with it and Lqr was a poor excuse of a father figure? When they needed her and she wasn't there, just like their father? And how dare she come back after 3 decades just to basically accuse Lwj of being like his father without any proof? They understand why she did what she did, but she's now nothing but a stranger to them, and they want nothing to do with her.
I like this. All I can think of is LWJ silently crying when he realizes that she chose to leave and that she thinks he's a monster who abuses his husband. LXC, who has been holding back the entire conversation, loses his shit when he sees his baby brothers tears and rips her a new one unleashing decades of repressed emotions.

Yu Ziyuan has been disqualified because I decided to put only the mothers of main characters but mostly also because she is terrible and abusive ..
Honorable mention to Jiang Yanli who is a mother but not of a main character although she did sorta become the mother/big sister figure in Wei Wuxian's life.
