Run Away With Me

Aemond x Reader

@oneeyedvisenya and I were talking about musical/song inspired fics a while back and I finally got inspiration to do one. Her one shots that have been published for her series absolutely inspired me to give it a go. Also this song is really special to me and it came on and I ended up feeling a lot of feelings.

Summary: You and Aemond have been together through everything. College graduation is fast approaching and you might end up going your separate ways.

warnings: none, unless you count pining as one. FLUFF!! Angst??? Hurt/comfort. Idk how to label these.

You and Aemond have always been friends. Through thick and thin, you two were always together, partners in crime. Despite his family situation he’s in you have never strayed from him. You told him that you would always be there for him. And you were.

Middle school turned to high school with carpooling and high school turned to college with a shared apartment. Which is now. Which is about to end. In a week you and Aemond will cross that stage and begin a new chapter. You had hoped that you two would stay together after graduation but the conversation was never brought. You were too scared to even bring up the possibility that you and your best friend would have to part ways after so many years together.

One more.

You took a sip of your hot chocolate and looked at your best friend in the living room. He was reading some philosophy book that apparently had quite a bit to say. He was comfy in a long sleeved baseball shirt and gray sweatpants with his feet propped up on the coffee table. His silver hair was in a messy bun and his violet eye was focused on the contents of his book. The blue sapphire in place of his other eye glimmered with the light hitting it so perfectly.

Everything was so perfect in this moment. You didn’t want to leave it, leave the apartment, leave him, in a week. The thought of it almost made you cry. You knew the love you have for him isn’t simply platonic or friendly, it was more than that. But it was so big, so scary, that you kept it in. Played everything off as being his best friend. Nothing more. It pained you so much that you couldn’t say more but you would never risk losing him in any way, even if it meant being quiet.

“Y/N,” drawled Aemond. “I can feel you staring at me.”

You cleared your throat before walking over to the couch. Without even looking up from his book Aemond scooted over to make room for you. A few minutes of silence passed. Just him reading and you drinking. Normally the silence would be comfortable but this time it had a touch of tension. You were staring straight ahead, lost in your thoughts, until the sound of a book closing and the shift of weight on the couch brought you back.

You didn’t dare to turn and face him. You knew Aemond was looking at you, reading you the best he can. You can’t look at him but you can’t move from your spot on the couch either. You were frozen. All you could do was grip your mug a little tighter, close your eyes, and take a deep breath.

“Y/N,” Aemond said softly. “I know something is going through your head right now. You’re never like this unless it’s something that’s eating at you.”

Aemond placed a hand on your thigh and gently rubbed circles in an attempt to calm you from whatever is hitting you.

One deep breath. In through the nose and out through the mouth.

Another deep breath.

One breath.

One last deep breath.

Four deep breaths. It took three slow deep breaths to release enough tension in your body to finally speak.

“I… I don’t want to lose you, Aemond,” you whispered.

“You’re not going to lose me, Y/N. We’ve always been together, right? That’s not gonna change,” he assured you.

You got up from the couch, leaving the warmth of his hand, of him, to walk a few steps to put some distance between you two.

Then another.

One breath.

A third.

You hate the words that come out of your mouth.

“How do you know? How do you know, Aemond? We’ve been through all these big changes together, but this? This is bigger than going to a college together.”

You find the courage to finally turn and face him but not without tears running down your cheeks.

You continued on, “We never talked about what we’d do after college and now it’s ending and we don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t want us to be away from each other but most of all -”

One breath.

One more.

“Most of all I don’t want to lose the love I have for you, the love that you have for me.”

Silence hung in the air.

You gripped your mug just a little tighter.

“I know you love me as a friend and I don’t want to lose that after graduation but I have to tell you now. I have to tell you now before we inevitably part ways.”

One breath.

“I love you. I love you, Aemond. Not just as a friend, not just as my best friend, but something more.”

Aemond stares at you, mouth slightly open in awe.

A few seconds. That’s all it took for you to get the message. You bowed your head and let your tears drip into the now empty mug.

“I’m sorry, Aemond. I shouldn’t have said anything but I knew that if I didn’t it would eat me up and -”

“Y/N.”

You could see him move closer to you even with your head down.

“Y/N, please, please look at me,” Aemond said gently.

All you could do was shake your head. You couldn’t look at him. Not now.

His hand gently came to your chin to lift your face to his but you shut your eyes tight. You still couldn’t look at him. You couldn’t face him. A calloused hand carefully caressed your cheek and wiped away a tear.

“Please look at me, Y/N.”

One breath.

You opened your eyes to see his violet one and quickly glanced at his sapphire. Even with tears in your eyes the sapphire was still as beautiful as ever.

“I am never going to leave you,” Aemond promised. “My love for you will never leave you. And my love for you? It’s more, too.”

He brought up his other hand to cradle your face and pressed his forehead against yours as both of you closed your eyes. That’s how you two stayed. Eyes closed. Breathing together as one.

One breath.

Then another.

Aemond nudged his nose against yours in a silent request for permission. You didn’t have to open your eyes to know what he was asking. Gently, as though it was the most sacred thing in the world, you pressed your lips to his. He was soft, just as you thought he would be. Your lips moved together as though it was meant to be, as if this had been done many times before. No pressure, no urgency, just gentle love.

“I’m sorry I never told you, too. I was afraid it would drive us apart,” Aemond sighed.

You gave him a smile, a tear stained smile, but a genuine smile. Once again he wiped away your tears. You finally put your mug down, your tether to the ground, that you no longer needed. Now that your arms were free you wrapped them around his waist and held tight.

A second breath.

One breath.

Another.

You never wanted to leave him and he never wanted to leave you. Everything felt so right that it didn’t feel real. You tensed up and pulled Aemond even closer. You took your time memorizing how he felt around you. Hands cupping your face, strong hands that would hold you forever, hands that have been holding you forever. The only difference is the intensity of the love.

Aemond always felt right to you, but now he feels part of you. He has always had your heart and you always had his. This love between you two is genuine. This love between you is strong.

He pulled away slightly to tilt your face up to his. A few seconds passed and you were both lost in each other's eyes. All that mattered to you was him and all that mattered to him was you. Aemond tenderly lowered his lips to yours for another kiss.

Another breath.

A third breath.

And with that, the two of you sealed the vow with a kiss.

One last breath.

As you separated from each other you tried to pull away but Aemond held you close. He moved his hands from your face to your waist and rested his head atop yours. He muttered the next words so quietly that you almost missed them.

“Run away with me.”

“What?” You moved back just a little bit so you could look at Aemond.

“Run away with me. We could be together. I love you and I want to spend all of my life with you. I have plans, we can make plans as we go if you want.”

All you could do was look at him with a dazed look.

“I don’t want you to feel tied to me, that you have to follow me,” Aemond said. “But we could do it, you and I. We can have a life together. You just have to say the word and we can go. We could even skip the graduation ceremony if it means more time together for us. Please, Y/N. Y/N, run away with me.”

Your heart filled with love, love for him, for your Aemond. Tears threatened to spill but this time they were out of happiness.

“Yes, yes, Aemond. I will run away with you.” You gripped him tightly. “I am yours and you are mine, right, Aemond? Together forever.”

“Yes, Y/N. Together forever,” he promised.

The Eternal Endings Cast and History: The Down-Timers

//Hey everyone, Mod Bubbles here! I bring you some more of My Thoughts.

//Having gone through Danganronpa: Eternal Endings with my friend Timeline Anon, I can say it's one of the most unique and interesting fangans we've seen thus far. We had no idea how it would work, but somehow it really seems like it can.

//One thing that really piques my interest isn't just that the cast is in the afterlife, but the fact that all of them come from very different points in history. That's something I think is worth speculating on, especially with how it may play into their characters, both in terms of their places in history and the context from where they're from.

//There have always been small historical tidbits in DR, both canon and fangan, but Eternal Endings is the first one I've seen that specifically has real-world events playing a role here. Our protagonist, Krystal Willard, died in 2021, specifically referencing how the travel restrictions imposed during the height of the Pandemic were being lifted.

//This game specifically doesn't take place in the same timeline as the Hope's Peak saga, since the founder of the talent program is another figure altogether, but I thought it would be interesting to examine the eras each of them are from.

//As a bit of shorthand, I also decided to borrow some terminology from Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series (a great book series btw), where people from the past are referred to as "Down-Timers" and people from the present/future are "Up-Timers."

//This also just gives me a chance to talk about history, which I enjoy doing : P

//So, without further ado, let's get into it.

THE DOWN-TIMERS:

Zhao Ying (1903-1932)

Hailing from the furthest back in time is Zhao, a personal favorite of mine, who was the Ultimate Singer. Just from that time frame, she would've been around for the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Warlord Era, the rise of the Nationalist Government and the very early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Just days before her death- on February 18th 1932- the Imperial Japanese conquered Manchuria and established the puppet state of Manchukuo.

There's also a bit of an anachronism with the PRC's flag being there, given that the design wasn't adopted until 1949, but that's probably for the benefit of a modern audience.

Anyway, Zhao is an entertainer and doesn't really make a lot of commentary on these conflicts. She's a singer, a dancer, and an actress, and had an upcoming role before her death. This is very interesting because the 1920s and 30s represented the emergence of cinema in China. The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple, a 16-part box office hit, was released between 1928-1931 and represents one of the first martial arts action films, but has sadly been lost to time.

Zhao was more than likely a silent film star, although 1931 brought the first Chinese sound film, Sing-Song Girl Red Peony, so it's possible her voice has been recorded as well. If I had to guess, Zhao probably lived around Shanghai, given that it was the center of the Chinese entertainment industry in this era.

One of the most overlooked aspects of Chinese history is that, while China itself was never colonized, it was forced to make Concessions to outside powers. These were pieces of territory in major cities like Shanghai, which were effectively enclaves of foreign territory that were exempt from Chinese law and provided a foothold for European Empires, America, and even Japan to exert influence and trade.

A byproduct of this is that many gangs and secret societies were allowed to operate with impunity in the Concessions, which resulted in prostitution, drug dealing and gambling being quite common. This probably explains why Zhao isn't a fan.

However, the saddest thing about the losses in Zhao's life? She was a mother.

Given that the photo says 1932, this had to be around January or Early February, meaning Zhao's boy, Wang Wei, couldn't have been more than 2 or 3. In-story, she's in tears over leaving her son behind and wonders if he'll even remember her.

Not to make the hurt worse, but given that Shanghai would be occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1937-1945...well, I'm going to hope that the poor kid and the rest of her family made it out.

Earnest Mikkola (1910-1945)

Speaking of World War II, Earnest would've been around for it and its prequel. Essentially the Indiana Jones figure of this setting, Earnest was a worldwide reputation as an explorer, having discovered new animals, plants and even civilizations. His expeditions took him quite a ways around the world, but it's his death that catches my attention.

See, Earnest is Finnish. I've seen some people worried that this means he was one the side of the Axis during the war, but this is a misunderstanding. See, just months after the Invasion of Poland, Finland was on the receiving end of an ultimatum from Stalin. Because he felt the border was too close to Leningrad (today St. Petersburg), he demanded Finland hand over some land to provide a buffer zone or else. The Finns said no, obviously, and thus began the Winter War.

To put it simply, while the Soviets ultimately got what they wanted, the Finns gave them a pretty bloody nose in the process. In just three and a half months, the Soviets suffered over five times as many casualties as the Finns and their international reputation suffered worse.

The conflict was also ultimately pointless, as Finland- while it didn't side with Germany- formed what was an alliance of convenience. When Operation Barbarossa took place, the Finns actually occupied much of the Karelia peninsula, even more than they had before. This lasted until 1944.

That's when Finland pulled an Uno reverse card and sided against Germany, starting the Lapland War, where the Finnish military tried to push all Axis forces out of their borders, and this lasted until April 1945, just a month before victory in Europe was declared.

How does this relate to Earnest? I guess it depends on where he was during the Lapland War, whether he was at home or elsewhere in the world, and whose side he was ultimately in favor of. Could that be why he was poisoned? It remains to be seen.

Yun Jung-Hoon (1936-1952)

Continuing with the war trend, here we have the first one to ask a historical question: local fly boy Yun. Even just from the patch on his shoulder, I could tell what his deal probably was before Krystal even spoke with him.

Sure enough, Yun here was a pilot in the Korean War. For those who don't know, Korea- which had been occupied by Japan since 1910- was divided along the 38th parallel North after World War II. The Soviets occupied by the north and established a communist government, led by Kim Il-Sung, while the Americans occupied the south and established a non-communist government lead by Syngman Rhee.

If you're only familiar with the North/South divide in the modern day, this is where it began. In the Spring of 1950, Kim lead an invasion to unify the country under communist rule, and because the South was militarily weak at the time, he thought it would be easy and conquered all the way down to an area called the Pusan Perimeter. Of course, America and a United Nations coalition force arrived to push them out.

They managed to push their way up to the northern border, where it seemed possible to conquer the North...only for the newly-established People's Republic of China to send hundreds of thousands of troops to support the North. They pushed the front lines south, where it stagnated around the 38th parallel for the next three years.

Based on his death date, if he died in battle, I'm guessing it was either in the First Battle of Hook or The Battle of Triangle Hill.

Yun also asks Krystal about the outcome of the war, but he decides he doesn't want to know and instead says he needs time to mentally prepare himself. I can't say I blame him, given that the war he died in was ultimately just a stalemate and technically never really ended.

Oumar Dembélé (1939-1969)

Another personal favorite of mine, Oumar is hilariously melodramatic, but also quite empathetic and emotionally-conscious dude. He's a relationship counselor and a published author, which is very interesting.

Oumar is Malian, and with that time frame, he would've been born when the country was under French colonial rule. At the time, Mali was called "French Sudan" and was ruled as part of French West Africa, a federation of eight colonies in the region. Mali and Senegal both achieved independence as the Federation of Mali on June 20th, 1960, although their status as a federation only lasted two months.

Even under French rule, there was a considerable divide between Northerners, particularly the Tuareg people, and Southerners. Under independence, the country's first president, Modibo Keïta, moved quickly to establish a single-party state, nationalized a great deal of services, and withdrew from the French Community in favor of closer ties to the Eastern Bloc, although economic problems lead to them rejoining the Franc Zone in 1967. He would later be deposed in a coup the following year.

This doesn't mean Oumar would've stayed in Mali, of course. In fact, I get the impression he probably moved to someplace like France to become as prominent as he had. This probably would've come in the wake of the Algiers War, when France saw many years of economic growth.

Oumar's death is also equally interesting and horrifying to consider, given that he was specifically crushed in a small venue.

This was a case of human crush injury. This is when a crowd of people is so tightly packed together (4–5 people per square meter/2.5 square feet per person), there's no room for them to move or even breathe.

The 1989 Hillsborough Disaster is a pretty infamous example of that, where 72,841 people compacted together in a stadium designed to hold just under 40,000. The result? 766 people were injured, 94 died and another 3 later died of injures they received. The crowd was so packed that even people who had died were still held up through the pressure.

Personal space is important.

Bonnie Clark (1959-1978)

And here's Bonnie, easily the saddest character in the game and I can't blame her at all. Out of all the Down-Timers, she's the one we actually learn the most about in her introduction. She has the vibes of an all-American girl, with a very fitting accent and everything.

She had a friend group that she frequently went to the arcade with, and she worked at a place called Don's Diner. How do we know? Krystal finds a picture.

"Now disgraced" in this context likely refers to Bonnie's untimely death. If any of you are familiar with the Terrible "Accident" PSA on workplace safety, you can probably imagine what happened. It's easily one of the most horrific ways to go, not gonna lie ^^;

Beyond that, there's not too much to really say with her in terms of historical context, given that she's a pretty archetypal small town girl, albeit much more pessimistic than many other examples. That could relate to how the 1970s were a difficult time for America, both economically and socially, due to factors like OPEC's oil embargo due to the Yom Kippur War.

That being said, it was still a time of significant social, scientific and technological progress, although for a teenager trying to make end's meet, that probably would've been a small comfort.

On a much lighter note, Bonnie got to enjoy some of the classic video games of the era: Pong, Space Invaders, Breakout, Death Race, Asteroids, Galaxian and many others.

Fernando Gomes (1958-1984)

And here we have our local himbo, Fernando. He's a pretty laid-back dude and his bio states that, while he's attained worldwide fame for his surfing skills, he prefers to stick around his home town and stay in the lifeguard job he's had since he was a teenager.

Even if you know history, it's almost easy to forget while talking to him that Fernando would've spent most of his life under a military dictatorship.

The Fifth Brazilian Republic, which was established after a coup on April 1st, 1964, was a brutally repressive government. Strong anti-communist policies, hard-line conservatism, political repression, mass censorship, curtailment of freedom of speech and the widespread killing, torturing and deporting of dissidents were all commonplace, particularly in the 70s.

So common, in fact, that the decade between 1968 and 1978 is also called the "Years of Lead."

Despite this, Brazil adopted a highly diversified and developmentalist economic model that helped boost their economy, and they developed the slogan "Brazil: Love it or Leave it." Fernando, ironically, seemed to adhere to that slogan given his love for his hometown.

Of course, Brazil would eventually return to democracy, but Fernando would fatally hit his head on a rock before he could see it happen.

Sonechka Morozova (1978-1996)

And another favorite of mine, Soneckha is our local magical weirdo, whose predictions of the future have been far more accurate than chance would suggest. She's also not disappointed that she's dead, but rather than she didn't end up as Queen of Hell like she wanted.

She's also very interesting in that, while she doesn't seem to play well with others, she'll respect you if you respect her in return, such as not giving her a nickname and understanding what a soothsayer is.

Timeline-wise, Sonechka would've been around for the latter days of the Soviet Union, the Chernobyl Disaster, the collapse of communist rule over Eastern Europe, the independence of the Russian Federation, the 1993 Constitutional Crisis and the First Chechen War.

It's not hard to see how, given that she has the ability to predict the future to a supernatural degree, she likely saw these events, and watching them play out probably shaped a lot about her personality and outlook.

My biggest question is how she wound up dying of hypothermia in the middle of the summer, as July is actually the warmest month in the country.

Petra Nightingale (1987-2006)

First introduced as "Scene Kid," Petra is definitely someone whose design would grab your attention. Her talent was a bit of a surprise to me, but her attitude, not to mention her sweet personality, really make her well-suited to caring for seniors.

Petra is English and would've been a 90's kid, so her time might've been spent with things like classic shows, crisp packets with prizes in them, Mr. Blobby and that time when the console wars were between Nintendo and Sega.

In terms of social and political history, the 90s saw the end of Margaret Thatcher's time as prime minister, the restoration of relations with Argentina after the Falkland War, the latter half of the Mad Cow Disease scandal and the Good Friday Agreement that brought an end to the Troubles.

Petra also mentions she's from Brighton, and during her childhood, she would've seen the city become much more prominent, which resulted in housing prices going up and a lot of people moving away. Would that have influenced her decision to start caring for seniors who couldn't afford to move.

I think the most interesting part to consider is that, as a senior caregiver, Petra has probably met a lot of veterans from Britain's various conflicts, from both World Wars to the various colonial conflicts to maybe even people who were in conflict with the IRA during the early days of the Troubles.

Not that I think it would've made Petra a judgemental person, as she seems very nice, but someone so young and very clearly quite lonely could have had her worldview shaped quite a bit by vets from these conflicts. I just think it's interesting to consider.

Vivian Wright (1966-2015)

Finally, the most recent Down-Timer and one from an era most of us are familiar with, Vivan was a Canadian teacher who was killed in a car accident. She's actually the first one Krystal meets after arriving, and we see that, while Viv is pretty nice, she also definitely has those anger issues.

I think most of us know what she would've been around to witness just before her death, but in terms of her adolescence, she would've been around for things such as Trudeaumania, civil rights for the First Nations, the many political tensions within Quebec and Terry Fox's famous attempt to run cross-country.

As the Ultimate Teacher, Viv probably has a lot to share on these topics, and I think it's interesting to consider how she could potentially be the one to help her fellow Down-Timers accommodate to the discoveries that came after their deaths. It's an interesting possibility.

//So there you go, some historical context for each of our Down-Timers, which I think could potentially play a role in their characters, arcs and motivations in the story. It's understandable that a lot of them probably have values that we today wouldn't agree with, but the same could be said of us and the Up-Timers, who deserve their own essay as well.

ur spn oc intrigues me so much. i couldn't find the post u mentioned this in so i may just be misremembering but i'm p sure u mentioned some sort of spn musician au with him? and i have been so curious about that pleaasse 🙏 i need to know the details

oh yeah!!! my au where dean is a musician 🥰🥰🥰 it's actually inspired by two different fanfics i like (texas state of mind by palominopup and starstruck by peanutbutterjelly-pie. tbh i haven't finished starstruck but i love what i've read so far). i love this one, but i don't have the most planned out for it yet 💔 but here's what i've got so far:

dean is a (probably country) musician who has had writer's block (or the song writing version of this?) for a hot minute and he's been really pressed into needing to get inspiration for something new. sometime makes him remember his two "best friends" (THEY WRRE ALL GAY FOR EACH OTHER. duh) from high school, and he suddenly gets inspiration for a song. it's a love song ofc, like he's confessing his feelings and expressing his sorrow of not keeping in contact with them, and talking about how he'll prolly never see em again so he's sad about that.

he writes it and records it and releases it, and it's a huge hit. there's also lots of controversy surrounding it because no pronouns outside of i/me/my are mentioned in it, and the two names used (jaime and cas) are both technically gender neutral! so everyone's like "okay is this two guys??? two girls???? a guy AND a girl???" (btw both jaime and cas are non-binary so HA none of those options are right 🥰). so like the song gets popular both bc it's a hit and bc it's talked about so much bc people are trying to puzzle out the entire context of the song.

meanwhile, both jaime and cas hear the song, whether it's because they keep up with dean even tho they haven't been in contact since the end of highschool, or they just hear it on the radio bc it's playing everywhere rn. both are shocked, bc like "🥹🥹 omg he remembers me... he remembers US". they've all been living separate lives for a while, it's been at least 15 years since they all last saw each other. like dean went to a college far away, cas and jaime lingered a little before they just moved on to do their own thing because dean was gone, and they didn't see the point of sticking around their old hometown, and it hurt too much to be together with dean not there as well. they were THEE trio!! they weren't whole without dean :(

and now all three of them seriously reminsce about their old high school "friendship" and it becomes painfully clear to all three of them that yeah. they weren't just friends. they definitely were more than that. but what can they do about that now??

well first thing's first, jaime decides to look cas up in the phone book of the place jaime last knew he was at. he's surprised and relieved to see cas' number was still there, and he calls cas. he's basically like "hey so have you heard what's been playing on the radio lately"

and cas is like "um yeah...."

"we should go see him"

"how the hell are we going to do that?? he doesn't just have his home address on his twitter profile 🙄 it's not going to be easy"

"oh come on, who ever says true love is easy?" and jaime says this mostly jokingly, like to break the ice of THAT conversation. despite how jokingly he says it, it's PRETTY obvious from the song that dean is in love with them both still, and he really misses them. dean is SO in love with them and really, jaime and cas feel the same too. and cas ends up agreeing, of course, because jaime is obviously right about meeting dean again.

cas and jaime meet up and are sooo awkward and silly while trying to figure out how they're going to see dean again. they find out when dean's next concert is and they decide that's a perfect place to reunite with dean. tho cas is like "it's going to be difficult for him to notice us when there's tens of thousands of people at the concert"

and jaime's like "we'll MAKE him notice us" and cas is quite worried about what that could mean.

unfortunately i haven't thought of how exactly they're going to get dean to notice them yet. but somehow they do, and dean is SO excited, and he puts his whole pussy into that concert just for them 💕💕💕

then they ofc reunite afterwards and there's lots of awkwardness bc NONE of these guys can be normal 🙄🙄🙄 BUT it's cute and it's going to be cool.

yeah I am pretty young lmao, I'll spare you from another playlist by just naming some artists that gave me inspiration for god knows at some point

first off you mentioned Hozier, which I kinda only mention because he released a new album recently. Arctic Monkeys and Father John Misty are kinda in the same boat as him. More like the same lake.

The Amazing Devil and The Oh Hellos never fail to give me some sort of D&D/character inspiration. Ghost does?? something??? as well with characters, but specific ones. Same with Steam Powered Giraffe.

other than that, Library Magic by The Head And The Heart is very Wizard, along with The Magician by Andy Shauf. and because I just can't go without mentioning it, Queen is my favorite band. :)

hozier is one of those artists who i dont listen to on purpose like ever i dont thinki could name a single song of his with confidence BUT i know his voice starkly as one i really lusted after pre-t. i saw he just dropped a new album and i HAVE to give it a listen to especially the video of sssomething or other (full album mv??? pLEASE) because it stars domnall gleeson and i am still horny for that man even after all these years (he's the actor for hux for context lmao)

queen is also one of my long time favs, though definitely a band i dont know in and out the way i do with a lot of more modern punk bands lmao. freddie has and always will be Gender (god the video for i want to break free was IT for me in like 8th grade right around when i came out)

ive seen spg live before!! they are *great* experience even if you're not deep into the lore (i had friends who were big lore fans). i have heard precisely One And A Half Ghost Songs and im keeping it that way on purpose because its just sooooooo funny that im not into them because aesthetically they are way up my alley (and one of my sibs, a number of irl buddies, and MANY artists i follow are all nuts for them)

ive some passing familiarity with the artic monkeys, enough that i can pick out a number of their more popular songs on the radio even if i cant name them (i am garbage at song titles tho so)

bottom is a rock by mother mother (my m9 as a whole song. the chorus has a line for each of them i stg and if i could reliably draw i would do an old school lyricstuck to it)

my verdict on ur playlist btw is that it is very solid and cohesive a+, but *just* to the left of my tastes, largely because a lot of it skews 70s/80s which just by nature of the beast lacks the bass i like (because it was mixed entirely different compared to modern music, which is better suited for sounding big when played digitally through smaller speakers. ive heard some of these bands on big sound systems and theyre MUCH more in line with my tastes then lmao)

I’d like to introduce everyone to my #1 idols that I’ve loved since July 2018: Marcus & Martinus

When I joined tumblr I noticed that there weren’t any Marcus & Martinus tags or posts about them — which makes sense since their fans were pretty young since the beginning of their career so they probably didn’t know tumblr existed so their fans are mainly on Instagram, Twitter and I think even Facebook — but after I did some digging I found that some tags actually did exist and there were M&M fans on here but they haven’t been active in years so I would like to introduce the rest of Tumblr to Marcus & Martinus.

Marcus and Martinus Gunnarsen are identical twin brothers who were born on February 21, 2002 in Elverum, Norway and they currently live in Trofors, Norway. They have a little sister named Emma who also makes her own music, their parents’ names are Gerd-Anne (mom) and Kjell-Erik (dad), and they have a golden retriever named Tico that they got in, I believe, 2019.

Their career started when they won Melodi Grand Prix Junior in 2012 (which is like the Norwegian X-Factor for kids ages 8-15) on September 1. MMers (Marcus & Martinus fans/stans) call this day International MMers’ Day because it was the day that M&M’s career started — although it doesn’t really make sense that it’s called MMers Day bc it’s not originally about their fans, it’s about Marcus & Martinus starting their career as singers and it would make more sense to call it International Marcus & Martinus Day or sth.

They are called M&M for short, and if you were in the fandom in 2016, they were called Mac & Tinus or Mactinus for a long time but their fans don’t call them that anymore (it’s a bit of a cringey nickname imo and I’m allowed to say that btw bc I started calling them that when I first joined the fandom).

Their first album called “Hei” (which means “Hi” or “Hello”) was released in February 2015 and all of the songs are in Norwegian and the album included their first song that they won MGPjr with, “To Dråper Vann” which is “Two Drops of Water” in English. Their second album was their first English album called “Together” and it was released in November 2016. Their third album, “Moments” was released in November 2017 and was also in English. Basically, ever since they made “Together”, all of their songs have been in English.

In 2018 they released a single called “Invited” and that was my very first time experiencing the excitement of my favorite artist releasing a new song. In the end of the music video for “Invited” they teased that the next song that would be released would be called “Lie To You” and they later performed this song live at a concert and that is the only recording of the song that we have to this day because guess what? It never got released!! Marcus recently explained that the song didn’t get released because something happened to the file??

On January 24, 2019 the boys told their fans in an Instagram livestream that they would not be going on tour in 2019 because they would be focusing on making new music but they would still have big concerts in other countries. That year, they released an Extended Playlist called “Soon”. The name of the EP was an inside joke between them and their fans because whenever their fans asked them when new music was coming they always responded with “soon” or “very soon”.

In 2020 they released two singles, “Love You Less” and a Christmas song, “It’s Christmas Time” but they did not release any more albums probably because of covid and the fact that it takes a lot of work and effort to make an album.

In 2021 they were featured on Stig Brenner’s song called “Miserabel” which is a Norwegian song and after that they released two singles “Belinda” and “Feel” where they collaborated with other people on. With “Belinda” they collaborated with Álex Rose and with “Feel” they collaborated with Bruno Martini.

In 2022, before releasing their next single, Marcus & Martinus participated in Sweden’s masked singer competition and won. I don’t know much about it bc I didn’t really pay much attention to it cuz it didn’t really pique my interest that much.

Their next single released in May 26, 2022 was “When All The Lights Go Out” after deleting or archiving all of their 3,000+ Instagram posts and blacking out their profile picture and putting the words “We are not the same” in their bio. I can tell you that the entire fandom freaked out when they deleted all of their posts because all of those posts recorded the milestones in Marcus & Martinus’s journey in their career and those posts had sentimental value and nostalgia for MMers. I personally still hold out hope that they just archived their posts and that they’ll put them back up but that hope is quickly diminishing.

On June 11 or 12, 2022 they had a concert in Drøbak Norway and sang unreleased songs and the performances of those songs were filmed by fans and posted on YouTube. The unreleased songs have been named “One Good Reason”, “Serve It Up”, “It’s Gone”, “We Are Not The Same”, and my personal favorite, “Love Flow”.

On September 9, 2022 they released their cover of “Wicked Game” by Emika.

On October 21, 2022 “Gimme Your Love” was released. The song was released on Spotify at midnight in Norwegian time (yeah, the same day Midnights by Taylor Swift was released). They had worked on the song with a DJ and producer named Medun.

Finally, Marcus & Martinus’s most recent single, “247365” came out July 13, 2023

Oh, also most people who aren’t fans might recognize Marcus & Martinus from their old Musical.lys that they made with their song “Heartbeat” from the “Together” album and their music video for their song “Girls” from that same album. Today they get comments on their tiktoks from non-fans saying things like “I forgot about you guys”, “Weren’t you 14?”, and “you guys are still here??”.

I would like to add that after getting to know them for 4 years based on what they have shown to their fans, Marcus & Martinus are the most unproblematic celebrities I know. They are genuinely nice guys who support and accept minorities and they are very kind and nice to their fans while setting boundaries with them.

I cannot say the same for some of the fans, though. Throughout the years of M&M’s career, all of the drama that has occurred was started by their fans. In 2016 they made a big deal out of the boys kissing their fans on the cheek and vice versa when taking photos with them (they were 14 at the time and their fans were about that age or younger) and in 2017 when Marcus & Martinus became friends with Lisa and Lena who are German twin sisters that also make music together, some MMers attacked them thinking that they were in a relationship with them. Some MMers have also attacked other people in the fandom who are editors for getting so many likes, reposts, and a follow from M&M (aka “notices”). Not all MMers are like that, though. I personally haven’t encountered many MMers that started drama, I’ve only seen the normal MMers post about it on their stories.

Marcus & Martinus both share a love for football (soccer). I think their dad taught them how to play and they have been playing the sport on the side of their singing career for pretty much their whole lives. In an interview, when asked what they would be if they weren’t singers they said they would be football players because they really love it.

Both Marcus & Martinus have been single for their whole lives so far and in pretty much every interview they’ve ever been in they’ve been asked if they have girlfriends and they have said no every time.

Until August 15th, 2022

That day Marcus posted a picture on his Instagram story of him with a girl and tagging her with a heart “<3”

That day the fandom EXPLODED with people who were happy for them and people who started hating on the girl, Nora which caused the people who supported the relationship to post on their stories telling the - for lack of a better word - haters that Marcus is allowed to have a personal life and he doesn’t have to explain anything to us (his fans). At this time, the fans were not 100% sure that they were in a relationship bc Marcus didn’t explicitly say that she was his girlfriend in his post so they were theorizing that they could either be dating or they could just be close affectionate friends.

The next day it was confirmed that Nora and Marcus were in fact dating when M&M’s team posted a screenshot of an article talking about the new relationship on their profile. Since then, there have been so many MMers supporting Marcus’s relationship by leaving positive comments on Nora’s Instagram and editors making edits of her.

Martinus is, however, still single as of right now.

Agree Anon. It's important to have boundaries between yourself and other people. Whether it's people you don't know or people in your life. You don't get to control either; the sooner you get that (not you Anon, the wider 'you'), the better.

People were insisting Baekhyun and Kai were being forced into the group and SM was running them into the ground and they should be allowed to rest meanwhile asking for an EXO comeback every fucking second. So they need to rest but they also need to rejoin EXO for a comeback?

The victimization is rooted in a performative savior complex and selfishness. At the end of the day, these fans want whatever it is that will satisfy their craving/addiction for the object of their desire (that which they want to control, btw). This is why military service is so hard for them and considered life ending; the addiction ends and those who are upset need to replace the "fix" with someone else. Because a lot of musicians don't release music or any content for years, so why is it so life-ending with Kpop? People really need to reflect on that.

Taemin stated the one he had the most chemistry with in SuperM was Ten and I don't believe he believes he doesn't have the mostbchemistry with someone he's been close to since he was a kid lol Ya know? I think he was truthful about he and Ten's chemistry but I think the obvious answer was Kai but he didn't say it. When Kai suggested they share a room, Taemin opted for one by himself which I do not blame him for because I too would've wanted a room by myself and whe assigning sleeping arrangements, Taemin put Kai with Lucas instead of with him lmao So all that to say, I think since TaeKai and BaeKai alraady have established relationships, I think they made it a point to focus on showing their bonds with the others since so many bratty twats were saying how unhappy they were being forced into SuperM

What you're saying, Anon, is what I think most viewers who know Taemin and Kai a bit would conclude naturally *if they are not insane*, lol. That's a big if. Taemin and Kai already did lots of promo as "besties" when they were younger; they probably don't feel the need to do more than they already did (plus Rare Taem showed off their friendship in 2020 anyhow, but maybe SuperM fans never saw that?). The sleep thing I think is more just TM having a sleep issue and wanting/needing to sleep alone. This is going to be surprising, but I actually don’t have nearly as much to say about the two following Animals’ reunions, one occurring in ‘75 (though, the album they recorded wasn’t released until ‘77), and another in ‘83. Not that there aren’t good moments, but most of them are general comments about the band, not anecdotes about just Alan and Eric. Surprisingly, there’s much more footage of them caught on video instead of through choice articles and photographs.

Before We Were So Rudely Crowded Into Chas’ Home Studio -

Up until each of the reunions, Alan and Eric weren’t actively in each other’s lives. Still close friends on the inside, just without ties binding them like in the 60’s. Eric really had no reason to go over to England anymore once he was with WAR and staying in the United States permanently, and Alan, as always, was rooted to the spot for the most part.

Though, Alan was really popping off in the early 70’s, collaborating with Georgie Fame to great success, writing the film score for and starring in Lindsay Anderson’s O Lucky Man! (best album of all time btw), and gaining critical acclaim for his autobiographical album, Between Today and Yesterday. Alan, without a doubt (and even compared to Eric) had the strongest solo career of all of the Animals, mostly thanks to this time period. And, ironically, it was during one of his worst ruts mentally… Now, I’m not going to entirely play psychologist (even though I already have, whoops), but if Alan’s depression in ‘65 was bad, then what he was going through from basically ‘71 to ‘75 was… oof. Really bad. Look no further than the albums he released at this time: the aforementioned O Lucky Man! (‘73) and Between Today and Yesterday (‘74) as well as Metropolitan Man (‘75) and, to a lesser extent, Savaloy Dip (‘74), albums where a majority of the songs are just Alan venting. Not just venting about the world at large or some sticky situations he’s encountered, but about himself and his mental state. He literally has a song on Metropolitan Man called “The Drinker’s Curse” where it’s literally just him talking about his issues with alcohol abuse. “Nobody Can” and “Fool’s Gold” on the same album are literally about his time with the Animals and how much it broke him. O Lucky Man! as a whole, while written for a movie, is intensely personal to how Alan has processed everything life throws at him, and it hurts as much as it is validating.

He was really, really unhappy during this period, despite the critical success he had, and not just in the cliche “well, money and success don’t buy you happiness” sort-of way all celebrities encounter. No, this is absolute proof, in my opinion, if the behavior Alan displayed up until this point wasn’t enough, that Alan is just… wired differently. He’s got depression, he’s got anxiety. It’s rooted in him, and it rears itself intensely at some times - it’s just who he is, and went relatively untreated (outside of the flying-anxiety, which still never fully went away) because of mental health stigmas at the time.

Anyway, that was a lot about Alan and not a lot about Eric… is my bias obvious yet? Eric was doing a lot at this time, but it was mostly him trying to take off with his own solo career once he broke off from WAR, continuing to be a rockstar into the 70’s.

Make no mistake, they still hung out when they had the chance:

“We still keep in touch. Eric Burdon came to our place for Sunday dinner just before Christmas - he’s a lot steadier these days and more into the business side. I’ve always felt that he lacked focus - he’s never been properly taken in hand as an artist. He should concentrate more on singing and less on talking. He really hasn’t yet made the most of his talent. But Eric was a great influence on me, especially when I was obsessed with success. I wouldn’t have made it but for Eric - he taught me a lot.” - Alan Price, Record Mirror, April 6th, 1974 (p. 16).

Still worrying over Eric and gushing about how much of a positive influence he was on his life… we love to see it. Even right smack-dab in the middle of Alan’s huge depressive spell. Also, it’s always around Christmas with these two…

However, another actual reunion would be soon on the horizon. In late 1975, Chas had the bright idea to get everyone together at his house and home-recording studio, since Eric and Hilton were in England at the time, John was working with him, and Alan wasn’t too busy. They ended up doing so and recording the album Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted, an album that I love with my entire heart, even if it’s all covers. It’s got a really subdued feel to it, and is probably the most Alan-heavy Animals album in terms of sound - he sounds absolutely excellent here, as if he’s using this to work through some things internally. And we, of course, get the return of that wonderful Burdon-Price dynamic between vocals and keys, and it sounds just as good as ever.

Though brief, this was definitely the best and most quality reunion of the three they had, without a lot of arguing or whining. It was just Chas getting them all together to rehearse and make an album for the fun of it; he actually forgot to release the thing for two years. Much like Alan and Eric’s relationship, all the other Animals seem to work best together when they just find each other, no strings attached. Alan and Eric are just a prominent microcosm of this and the “love-hate, delicate” balance of their relationship is practically determined by what’s going on around them.

I’m not particularly sure whose idea this was or how it came about, but Alan and his “Alan Price Band” were regulars, performing at the Newcastle City Hall for a while at this point. And on December 12th, 1982, Eric accompanied him.

Finally, not only do we have footage of just the two of them together, but also the culmination of all of those unrealized ideas of collaborating and what they can do when performing with one another. Quite frankly, it’s mesmerizing - while Eric’s already beginning that improvisation he’d be using during the Animals’ following reunion, Alan never falls behind and the two are absolutely in-sync for the entire show. Tossing the other looks, locking eyes, dueting with one another, smiling, Eric accidentally drinking from Alan’s beverage, and Eric even making him laugh at one point. Also, they embrace at the end and the genius who edited the film made it hang and fade out on the hug, so they’re hugging forever in my mind. 😐 It’s such an entertaining and beautiful half an hour, full of great renditions of Animals’ hits and tender moments between the two. I love it so much that I bought an unwatermarked version of the video… and I watch it every night.

The 1983 Reunion Was A Disaster And I Won’t Be Talking About It Much -

…Yeah, it really was.

If I’m being honest, I really don’t know a lot about what went down during this particular reunion, and honestly, I don’t care to know. Eric has some bitter recountings, as do John and Hilton, albeit a little lighter, but on the whole, it just sounded like a bad time. The band got together again, did a world tour, recorded an album (Ark), and had a terrible falling out with one another. And, like with the ‘75 reunion, there isn’t a lot of Alan-and-Eric as much as there is “the Animals” as a whole.

Alan and Eric had their moments, though, in a couple of choice interviews. One of them is no longer up on YouTube, sadly; I’m hoping someone will reupload it sometime soon. At the very least, I included the funniest part in an Animals Crack video I made, so if you want to see it, I can send it your way. In short, the interviewer asks if Alan and Eric still have any differences between them or if they’ve worked them all out, and Eric snarls. Then Alan answers in that mile-a-minute way he does when he’s feeling frustrated and awkward. I love them. 😐

[Interviewer: And musically, you’ve both gone in different ways?]

Alan: Yeah, I play what was easy for me, he sang what was easy for him.

Eric (being a contrary little shit): It was never easy. For me.

Alan (dramatically rolls his eyes): …Well…

Look at that, a live divorce arc. Nah, but you can tell that, despite Alan’s expression and tone seeming to suggest a cold stubbornness (a front he frequently puts up), his words say something completely different, with that “we are rather better together than apart” evoking a very similar feeling to some of Alan’s gestures in the past - being the one to openly admit he wants Eric in his life and music. Eric’s pretty silly here, both to tease and be purposefully contrary. He’s doing this to push Alan’s buttons, sure, but I’m sure Eric finds it all in good fun in his mind. It’s innocent, and I have a feeling they’ve always behaved like this in interviews - supporting each other most of the time, but Eric finds inopportune moments to tease Alan when he wants to as well.

Also, later in the interview, Eric laughs at a little joke Alan makes, so all is as it should be.

The tour itself, while a mess, did produce some great moments on film. Most “moments” between them are through the music (lots of harmonizing) and occasional looks - Alan has a habit of nodding in Eric’s direction to signal when he’s finished with a solo. Since they’re usually so far from one another on stage, and most of the filming is done at angles where you can’t see both of them in the same frame, you really have to spatially project in order to tell if they’re looking in one another’s direction. At the very least, anytime Alan glances up from the keyboard or opens his eyes during a song, chances are he’s looking at Eric.

One of my absolute favorite moments in particular that I will address is within their performance of “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” during a concert in England (probably the one on October 17th). Alan has a solo in this updated version of the song (beginning at about the 3:50 mark), and to lead into it, after Eric’s “Don’t you know!”, he says “Take me, take me, take me… take me away!!” as he walks towards the keyboard, in which Alan’s solo immediately follows. Like… considering how few moments we have of these two exchanging such blatant homoeroticism on camera… this is… wow. That’s barely even a euphemism; Eric just flat-out tells Alan to “take him away”. This is forever in my bank of “Precious Alan-and-Eric Moments”, with both audio and visual here.

Sadly, though, the divorce arc (between everyone, to be fair), came to a heated conclusion at the very end of 1983, with the original Animals’ last live concert ever performed at the Wembley Arena in London on December 31st. At this point, all good will had drained between all of them, with Eric not speaking to anyone, Chas in hot water for managerial problems, and everyone frustrated with Alan for the royalty-situation still. They split for the final time at the end of the year, with a live album of said concert eventually being released in August of 1984, but this was finally the end of the original Animals.

While relationships seemed to steadily be patched between Eric, John, Hilton, and Chas (and even Dave), no one could really seem to make amends with Alan - not that they necessarily had to. It was at this point that the royalty-situation could not be politely ignored anymore, like the Animals had been doing for over twenty years at this point, and Alan began to get very stingy with interviews because of this. A lot of the time, Alan would be asked about “Rising Sun”, in which his responses would get more snippy and vague. He seemed to have convinced himself that he did arrange their version of the song, somehow, and was sticking stubbornly to his version of the story. Whether this was due to seeds being planted in his head by slimy suits back in ‘64 or he legitimately was being selfish on purpose to screw over his old friends (which I simply don't believe)… Alan made his choice, and is now somewhat considered a villain in the Animals’ history to some because of it. This is an odd comparison, but Alan reminds me a lot of Aaron Burr - both people in which one major, detrimental choice they made colored their entire history, and tragically, some observers will never look past it, no matter how rich and intriguing their lives actually are.

It’s a shame, because it seems like all of the Animals legitimately wished they had gotten closer to Alan - particularly John, but it just couldn’t happen, due to their dynamic and this one awful choice Alan made. Chas was always passively a friend, Hilton was always passively a frenemy (which I’ll touch on later), and Eric was, well… Eric was something. A close friend, we’ll say. And Alan lost all of that.

The divorce-vibes really pick up from here on out, if Alan acting blunt in interviews wasn’t enough. Eric, in particular, cranks the divorce levels up to eleven sometimes… It's interesting, because in his first autobiography (I Used to Be an Animal, but I’m All Right Now, written in ‘86), he seems to talk about Alan incredibly fondly, without any petty negativity. Almost too fondly, for someone he was allegedly pissed at for going on three years, but perhaps those memories were just too fresh to not fondly reminisce on. On the other hand, in his second autobiography (Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, written in 2001), he seems to talk about Alan out of obligation, if anything, and mutters more about his follies during the ‘83 tour in particular. Remember when Eric was egged on by Alan to jump on that grand piano for him back when they were first starting out in London? Eric mentions Alan’s influence very clearly in the first autobiography, but shortens the description and doesn’t mention Alan at all in the second. Even his descriptions of Alan leaving and hanging around the Bob Squad have a different tone; in All Right Now, he seems confused and wistful even as he reflects on it, while in Misunderstood, he seems emotionless and to-the-point, besides when he mentions the halt in songwriting. There’s a huge discrepancy between these two books, and while sure, they were written fifteen years apart, there’s something to be said about Eric having more time to think about just how much money Alan had technically stolen from him and the rest of the band, and writing about him with that frustration in mind. Frustration at Alan’s decision, and also frustration that he can’t be friends with Alan or talk to him anymore due to this single dumb choice he made.

Even though, evidently, Eric did reach out, at one point. Back in 2005, he invited Alan to New Orleans to sing with him and raise money to help with the flooding that took place due to Hurricane Katrina, but Alan just still couldn’t get on a plane. There’s one more thing - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1994. John, Chas, Hilton, and Alan were there… but not Eric, who was stuck in Germany at the time. Alan stayed hilariously far away from the other Animals… but at the very least, he was the only one to shout-out Eric in his very brief speech.

…Well, I guess we’ve come full circle. Alan was jealous and unwilling to let Eric be the “leader” and dominate with his vocals at the very beginning, but he’s accepted it now, as he should. And, as I mentioned previously, he most likely had accepted it all the way back then as well, but it’s nice to see him actively vocalize it even in more recent times.

Respect and love is still there, deep down, and they both can find it in themselves to admit it.

I think that person was making a joke when they said that. Basically a more comical way to say "He invited a bunch of people from khiphop"

I'm not really sure what you mean when you talk about the business card/connection card? Are you saying he already knew the people he invited as opposed to extending an invite to new connections? If so maybe. Since we're here I'm just gonna admit it, I WAS wondering why he invited multiple people from khiphop. I kinda took it as him trying to build authenticity in the Khiphop scene by being like "Hey everybody! See all my hip-hop friends? I can run in these circles too!" Cause it's like...oh so now that you're releasing an album you wanna be all in pictures with these people but never really mentioned, interacted, or anything with them before in public?

But I didn't wanna throw any rain on the parade cause a lot of people seemed excited so I kinda just took it for what it was and just enjoyed the moment of all of these artists being in the same place especially since it was this star studded type of event. We HAVE seen Cream and Kid Milli kicking it recently which was cool cause I didn't know they were running in the same circles until then. But never DPR Live. I remember a few years ago during a live, Live said that he (or maybe many people from DPR) doesn't know that many people in Khiphop (or maybe k-music in general) so it was interesting to see him around all these people all of a sudden in his "off time" cause usually the only time you'd see them in the same vicinity is during festivals.

Anyway, I gave him (Hope) the benefit of the doubt and was like "Well, maybe he just invited some artists that he really liked as opposed to just using them as a prop. Maybe he wants to get to know them better or collab."

BUT if you're saying he knew them beforehand with that comment you made, then I guess that makes a lot of sense too. I honestly never came to that conclusion.

I haven't heard the jitb album. Honestly didn't plan on it and for some reason I thought it was just a single w/ 1 or 2 songs on it. I guess it makes sense why he had a whole release party for it. I think the strong suit for "Hope World" is the melodies and instrumentals. I'm definitely more interested in listening to JITB now and will check it out eventually to see if I agree with your assessment.

Album Reviews: Philip Selway / Pearl Jam

This week I got to review a live album and a re-release!

Philip Selway Live at Evolution Studios

Early this year I got to review Radiohead drummer Philip Selway's third solo album Strange Dance and I noted "You need to go into this album with the understanding that it is not a Radiohead or even a Radiohead-esque album. A case could be made that Ed O’Brien (read my review here of his solo album Earth released as EOB), York and Greenwood's side project The Smile (who released A Light for Attracting Attention, which I just named my #1 Album of 2022), Jonny Greenwood (who has become one of the best film composers of his generation with his soundtracks to You Were Never Really Here, There Will Be Blood and Spencer here) and some of Thom Yorke’s (who has done some solid solo albums and he has scored films like Suspiria), fall into that comparison of “if you like Radiohead, you’ll like this…”, but here Selway is exploring other sounds and flexing his folk and art rock muscles. While there are Radiohead-like tendencies that appear from time to time, it is a little different." This week sees the release of his live album Live at Evolution Studios.

After the Feb. 2023 release of Strange Dance, Selway did a launch event at this studio in Oxford. He returned to the studio to record this live album there in Apr. 2023 just before he did some tour dates (still waiting for some U.S. date BTW). Now to clarify - this is not a live album in the sense of a live concert with the audience cheering and singing along to the songs. This is live in the sense that Selway and a group of musicians just banged these songs out in a studio space together.

Musicianship is topnotch. Since my review of Strange Dance, I haven't absorbed the album to the point where I know these songs like the back of my hand and know all the words. So some of these still sound somewhat new for me. In addition to the songs from Strange Dance he also included some soundtrack songs he had done in the past. Selway is an awesome musician who is showing his skills beyond drumming, but I think the idea of this live album might've been cooler if he incorporated some other solo stuff like his 2014 album Weatherhouse. But it is an album that you need to come to and give a chance. Put it on and let it simmer.

Pearl Jam Vs. 30th Anniversary

This Fall marked the 30th anniversary of the sophomore album of Pearl Jam, Vs. For context, the Seattle band debut Ten was released in 1991 and it was a part of the Seattle music explosion (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, the list goes on) that changed music and culture. By the Fall of 1993, Pearl Jam were one of the biggest bands on the planet thanks to their music videos on MTV, co-headlining Lollapalooza, and most of all, their music. After the massive success of Ten, I was starting to feel a little burned-out on PJ by the time Vs. came out. That had nothing to do with the band or their musical abilities, just that I played the hell out of the album and needed to decompress. But loads of friends were heavy into the Vs. album and I eventually was lead to buying it after hearing some of the songs on radio. It’s easily one of their best albums! In 2013, I included the album in my Top 5 PJ Albums and while a lot has changed since that list, but if I had to re-do the list, Vs. would still make the cut.

30th anniversary vinyl edition

Through this blog, I have been fortunate enough to cover PJ multiple times over the years: their live album and DVD Let's Play Two, their 2018 concert at Fenway Park in Boston, their last studio album Gigaton, and their numerous solo and side projects (too many to namecheck here). So naturally I'm thrilled to get to review this re-release. Last month, Legacy issued several different versions including a Dreamsicle vinyl, a cassette, and a Atmos spacial audio mix. The one I got to review was the 2023 mix on vinyl (just black vinyl). Still sounds great and so many of these songs are now iconic. This was the sound of a band having their moment and adamant about not slipping from their highest point into the sophomore slump. While Ten might be a better album, this is the band swinging for the fences a little higher.

it really is amazing! seeing them try out different genres and decide whether to write or not (i still don't see the problem with tae&jk not writing their songs btw...it's literally fine, and i think they got really good songs that fit them🤷‍♀️) and what performances to do and where to appear etc. i really had no clue what to expect from any of them. many people said that jungkook choosing the pop and english way was expected because of the songs he grew up with which is fair, but i personally could never have made that connection or came to that conclusion! so even if something was very obvious, i was still surprised by it :D i couldn't really keep up with jungkook's promo videos today because of work but I think he said somewhere that he would do korean songs in the future, which i know a lot of people wanted for his first album. and i'm really curious about that! i personally think they can sing in whatever language they want, some of my favorite bts songs are from their Japanese albums and nobody called them names for releasing japanese songs so 🤷‍♀️ but i'm really excited to be surprised again in the future because once again i cannot predict or even theorise about what route they will take! namjoon's unreleased song that he kind of debuted on yoongi's tour also took me by surprise so i'm always 👀 for what he's doing next. it's really fun to just wait for new music :D okay that's it from me <3

agreeeee. the songs they chose make sense for what they were aiming for whether they wrote on them or not and it doesn’t bother me that they chose not to write on their albums. of course it’s always nice to hear lyrics they wrote, but it’s not a big deal to me either. jk explaining that he just didn’t have anything to write about rn was plenty enough of a valid reason imo! like yeah, that’s totally fair dude. i hope people aren’t displeased with him for that decision. i remember the fit tae’s solos threw over his promotion schedule and how they thought he didn’t do anything….i must have been living on another planet bc his layover promo was so jam packed to me DESPITE being during a writer’s strike in the states, which is absolutely the sole reason why he didn’t promote here. he literally couldn’t. but i thought he still chose really fun and fitting shows to promote on, so idk man lol. i didn’t feel like he got a short end of the stick, i thought tae’s promo was PLENTY for as short of an album it is. if that makes sense.

i’m the same! it’s impossible for me to make expectations for any of them because they just end up surprising me anyway. i think indigo is my fave because it surprised me the most for some reason. d-day was probably was the closest to what i figured yoongi’s album would sound like. jitb was close to what i expected from hobi too—give or take a few songs like MORE, for example. as for jungkook going for an all english album, that actually didn’t surprise me very much tbh! it’s exactly the kind of challenge i’d expect him to take on and it’s also not lost on me that he is extremely marketable as a solo pop artist, so of course the suggestion to make his album in all english would come up to cater to a much wider audience who otherwise ignored him/bts in the past because they didn’t want to listen to songs in another language. that’s just business lol. it’s not a bad thing and it’s weird that people try to make it that way. and as an english speaker it’s nice to have more songs i can sing along to easier too so i’m not gonna complain lol. i’ll ALWAYS be eager hear them sing in korean though so whenever he releases music in korean i’ll be just as happy. doesn’t matter what language they’re singing in at all, i’m just hear for the music however they wanna present it to me.
